  4. Disney is going above and beyond to keep you and your family safe when you come and visit! Enhanced Cleaning Sign But while there are enhanced cleaning procedures in the resort hotel rooms, if you want to take it an extra step further and add your OWN disinfecting measures, we have some tips! Keep shoes by the door If you don’t already do this, it might be a good idea to implement a hotel room “policy” where your shoes are taken off as soon as you enter the hotel room and they stay right next to the door. That way, you aren’t tracking any potential germs you picked up throughout the day around your room. If your room has a closet, consider storing shoes in there when you return from the parks. If your hotel room closet has enough floor space, you can also leave shoes in there when you return from the parks until you are ready to put them on the next morning. But if you are concerned about tracking germs around your room, leaving shoes as close to the door as possible is your best bet. Take a look INSIDE a reopened Disney World Resort hotel room here! Pack disinfecting wipes & double down on wiping high-touch areas If you can get your hands on disinfecting wipes, pack a few extra sets in your suitcase! As soon as you enter your hotel room at the end of the day, take a few wipes and wipe down high-touch surfaces in your room (think: doorknobs, sinks, drawer handles, telephones, and other surfaces like end tables or bedside tables, bathroom counters, etc.). Wipe down any items that may have been touched by housekeeping, including any items you leave out on the bathroom counter. Restroom in a Resort room at Bay Lake Tower Bring hand wipes and sanitizing wipes into the park with you, too! Use the wipes to clean table surfaces before eating. And don’t forget to wipe down your cell phone! Check out your NEW park essentials for a 2020 trip to Disney World here! Wash your hands! One of the most effective ways to disinfect the area around you is to keep YOURSELF “disinfected.” This means frequently washing your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and warm water! Restroom Signage When you return to your hotel room, immediately wash your hands before you touch anything in the room. Some folks even recommend taking a shower when you come in from the parks, since germs can linger on your clothing and hair. Keep hand sanitizer nearby as well! Keep in mind that currently, Disney World is NOT checking guests’ temperatures upon entering a resort, so that means taking extra precautions to keep you and your travel party safe! Read more about Disney not check temperatures at resort hotels here! Keep as many belongings off of the bed as possible In general, keep items other than yourself OFF of the bed, especially your suitcases, which can carry germs from the airport all the way to your hotel room. Also consider taking a shower when you return to your room from the parks before going to bed. Animal Kingdom Lodge Room It might also be a good idea to have wipes ready when you first arrive at your hotel room and wipe down those suitcases to eliminate all the germs they may have picked up while en route to Disney World. If you brought your own stroller from home, wipe that down, too, after each trip out of your room. Consider using chairs or benches to place belongings instead of your bed! If you’re a “toss your dirty clothes on the floor” kind of traveler, consider bringing trash bags to toss your dirties in at the end of each day. Germs can follow you back to your room on your clothing, so by bagging up your dirty gear and hopping into clean clothes in your room or for bed, you’ll reduce how many germs you spread around the room. Bonus when you get home, you can just dump the contents of the bag in your washer and call it a day! Bay Lake Tower For other items, use your counter space instead of your bed to house your belongings, such as desks, dressers, and seating areas you may not plan on using. There are LOTS of changes happening at Disney World. Learn more about them here! Store dirty and used face masks in a safe place Speaking of keeping potentially germ-spreading items at bay, once you use a face mask, it’s a good idea to store them in an area where they will not come into contact with you or other items again. Consider packing additional garment bags or even a few ziploc bags to bring to the parks with you and keep in your room. Face masks for sale at Bayview Gifts If you plan on washing your cloth face masks during your trip, plan on doing so as quickly as possible once you return to your resort hotel room to reduce the chance of your mask contaminating anything else. Check out our top tips for wearing a face mask all day in Disney World here! If possible, open windows and doors to patio areas Increasing ventilation is a known way to mitigate the spread of the virus, according to the CDC. This is why outdoor dining is often recommended over indoor dining. Patio at Bay Lake Tower If you are able to do so, keep windows open and let fresh air into your room. If you have a patio, open your door from time to time to keep the air flowing. Nothing beats air conditioning on a hot Florida day, but increasing ventilation even a little bit can help air out your room. Disney World is offering both indoor AND outdoor Relaxation Stations in each of its theme parks. Check out where they are located here! Disinfect your shower and tub Disney is assuring guests they’re doing everything they can to sanitize your room, including the bathtub. If you still want to be “better safe than sorry,” consider running VERY HOT water for about a minute to disinfect before stepping in. Shower at Animal Kingdom Lodge Additional precautions Disney is taking to make sure your room is safe and clean includes disinfecting the shampoo and conditioner bottle pumps in between each guest. If your room has those refillable bottles, the pumps will labeled to indicate that they have been cleaned before your arrival. IS Disney World safe right now? And should YOU go? Read our thoughts here! As we’ve mentioned, Disney World has implemented many new health and safety procedures throughout their parks and resorts. A big component is keeping the resort rooms safe and clean for guests at all times. But if you want to go the extra mile and stay on top of cleaning your personal space, we hope these tips gave you some ideas on how to do so! A little effort can go a LONG way in keeping you and your travel party safe while keeping every precaution in mind. Do you have an upcoming reservation at a Disney World Resort hotel? 7. Well, here we are. All of the Disney World parks have reopened and we’ve been exploring the changes for over a week now. Train Station It certainly can be easy to want to settle back into “the parks are open” mode, but just because the parks are open doesn’t mean they’ll necessarily stay that way. Hong Kong Disneyland recently became the first park to RE-close due to the global health crisis…is it possible that Disney World could do the same? This has definitely been a question on our minds and the minds of our readers! After all, it’s not like the global health crisis has just disappeared with the reopening of the parks. Florida’s case numbers are rising. If we’re looking at the case numbers, it’s really only gotten worse in recent days — especially in Florida. Orlando Sign As you can imagine, we’ve been keeping a close eye on case numbers in Disney World’s home state. In recent weeks, Florida has made a habit of breaking daily records for positive tests. And it’s not uncommon to see headlines like one from Tampa’s News Channel 8 touting a new record numbers of hospitalizations. At the beginning of July, the state saw 10,000 new cases reported five days in a row, prompting some Florida representatives to call for a shutdown and further health and safety measures, per CNBC. On top of that, Orlando Weekly recently reported that a White House task force deemed the state (and Orange County) a “red zone” for the crisis and recommended rolling back reopening measures across the state. Florida Sunset Orange County (where Disney World is predominantly situated) is deemed a problem area. According to ClickOrlando, the county recently saw a jump in case-related deaths. With severe cases on the rise, some ICUs in Florida have even begun to run out of beds, per CBS News. The main reason everything shut down in the first place was to prevent this. Click here to learn more about Hong Kong Disneyland’s decision to re-close. Recommendations from health officials are a major factor in reopening. Rising numbers in Florida are not enough on their own to give us an idea of whether the parks will close again. After all, they were rising when the gates first reopened too. Disney has based most of its reopening plan on the expertise and recommendations of health professionals, so experts would play a major role in the call for a re-closure if it happened. Health and Safety Measures Though the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does not have specific recommendations for large scale, stationary theme parks like those at Disney World, they do have recommendations for recreational spaces and traveling amusement parks that may be considered. Disney World is doing what they can to comply with the CDC guidelines. At this time, full compliance at amusement parks still constitutes a moderate risk to guests. Cast Member As we mentioned, a White House task force (partially comprised of health professionals) did put out a report that suggests Florida, and other states in the “red zone,” rollback on reopening. According to CNN, suggested measures include closing bars (Florida has already done this to a degree), limiting gatherings to 10 people, avoiding indoor gatherings, and closing indoor dining. Grand Ballroom If these measures were to become concrete, that would seriously limit the attractions and dining options in Disney World. Could this play into the ability of the parks to remain open? We’re not sure, but it’s definitely something we have on our radar. To learn more about Florida’s current alcohol ban, click here. But really, it comes down to the government mandates. A lot of our concern about the potential reclosure of Disney World was sparked by the reclosure in Hong Kong. It is important to note that the reason Hong Kong Disneyland closed again was due to government mandates. Disneyland in California also had to delay its reopening due to government requirements. So, the precedent so far has been that government intervention is one of the biggest factors in closing and reopening the Disney parks. ©Disney So, if the government plays such a big role, let’s take a look at recent comments from leaders. According to CNN, the most recent stance from the White House is that the country will not be shutting down again. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has noted that Florida is following in this vein and will not be significantly rolling back the reopening. On a more local level, Mayor Jerry Demings in Orange County has been following the lead of the governor, but has ALSO noted that if Disney is found at the root of an outbreak or if ICU beds become scarce in the county, the local government will not hesitate to ask Disney to reevaluate their opening. Main Street, U.S.A. Right now, the intention seems to be to stand behind the reopening measures, but we can’t rule out that a government entity will change mandates in a way that ultimately affects Disney World’s ability to stay open. Want to read more of Mayor Demings comments about Disney World’s reopening? Click here. Disney executives are confident in being able to stay open — but willing to be flexible. The Disney executives have been pretty mum about the reopening outside of official marketing materials, but CNN Business recently spoke with Disney Parks chairman Josh D’Amaro about the reopening. ©Josh D’Amaro D’Amaro lauded the company’s measures and expressed confidence in reopening. He explained that despite rising cases, the parks can be open responsibly. He did note when asked if the parks could reclose, however, that the reopening plan has been built with some wiggle room if it needs to flex. Click here for our perspective on the safety of Disney World. All things point to business as usual, but we can’t discount a reclosure as a possibility. So right now, it does seem like Disney World will stay open, but we’re not necessarily calling that the final word on the matter. Disney has been throwing us curveballs for all of 2020. Even though the official line shows optimism, we have no exposure to what kind of conversations are happening behind the scenes. Magic Kingdom Entrance We’ll be keeping track of the comments from major players in the decision making. If the parks do reclose, it will be for the health and safety of everyone. We’ll be the first to let you know! Click here to learn more about the delay to Disneyland’s reopening. Do you think Disney World will close again? Share your thoughts in the comments. 9. We’re coming at you with another Disney recipe today! Satu’li Canteen is one of our favorite counter service locations in Disney’s Animal Kingdom! Located in Pandora, this dining hot spot is home to those awesome rice bowls and crazy otherworldly desserts. Another popular item are those cute little cheeseburger pods! Cheeseburger Pods If you’ve never had these little pockets of deliciousness, they’re basically a steamed bun loaded with all the flavors of a cheeseburger. Sounds strange, tastes AWESOME. It’s one of our favorite foods in all of Animal Kingdom (AND it just reappeared on the menu as an option for adults after only being a kids’ option for a while!). Turns out you can make these yummy snacks at home. (We promise. If we can do it SO CAN YOU!) Follow our recipe below and you’ll be whipping them up in your kitchen in no time! We know what you’re thinking. “I can’t POSSIBLY make steamed buns at home, can I?!” You totes can. Seriously. It LOOKS scary and hard but in reality it’s deceptively simple. We skip the whole process of making bao dough and use…canned biscuits! SO EASY. If you can brown ground beef and boil water, you too can whip up Cheeseburger Pods! And you totally should cause they’re the BOMB. Ingredients 1lb lean ground beef (we used 96/4) 1/2 cup ketchup 2 tbsp yellow mustard 4 tbsp dill pickle relish (not sweet relish!) 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (fresh grated or the shredded stuff in the bags is fine!) 1 tsp garlic powder Salt and pepper to taste 3 cans of plain (not flakey or Grands style) biscuits Cheeseburger Pod ingredients Additional Cooking Equipment Parchment paper (to prevent buns sticking) A steamer basket or steamer insert for a stockpot. (This is a reliable option if you need one!) Instructions Brown ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat. Season with garlic powder and salt and pepper, to taste. Reduce heat to medium. Brown your ground beef! Add in mustard, ketchup, and relish. Stir to combine. Let it come to a simmer for a minute or two. Add in ketchup, mustard, and relish Turn off the heat and stir in shredded cheese until melted and combined. Add the CHEESE! Cut parchment paper into palm-sized circles and set aside (or if you prefer, you can buy precut sheets to fit most steamers). Pop open biscuit cans and roll out (or just smoosh with your hand) each one into a flat disc slightly smaller than your hand. Roll out biscuit so it’s just smaller than your hand Place the wrapper on your work surface or in your palm and add 1-2 tbsp of filling. Begin pleating the dough. Add the filling to the dough! Folding seems harder than it is and, in all honestly, yours may not look as perfect as the buns at Satu’li. THAT’S OK. Look up videos of preparing Bao Buns online for help, OR simply pinch them together in the center and call it a day. Make sure there are no holes or your bun will open slightly while cooking (again, not the end of the world if it happens. It’ll still be tasty!). Place on a piece of parchment paper. Pinch the dough together tightly!! Repeat with remaining biscuits. Load your steamer pan to not overcrowd the buns. All in the steamer! Bring two or so inches of water in your pot/pan (depending on your setup) to a boil. Once boiling, insert the steamer pan and cover. Let cook for 15 minutes. Steaming! Remove from the steamer and EAT. Repeat with remaining trays of buns as needed. Ta-da! Presto! 10. ’Tis the season, even in July, for baking up holiday sweet treats! The scent and taste of freshly baked gingerbread embodies all things holiday, and we have the perfect recipe to share for your Christmas in July celebration! Although we all love a beautifully decorated gingerbread cookie, we wanted to take our gingerbread game up to the next level. We asked our Disneyland Resort pastry chefs for their favorite gingerbread recipe and they did not disappoint with their Mini Gingerbread Bundt Cakes with Orange-Vanilla Sauce. This gingerbread recipe has all traditional spices you would expect with a little something extra. The addition of zested fresh ginger balances the molasses, and the amber lager beer ensures a nice moist cake. Fancy it up with an Orange-Vanilla Sauce pooled in the center of each mini Bundt cake and you will be the hit of the holiday party…in July or anytime! Enjoy! 16. There have been a lot of eyes on Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort lately! Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort The NBA will soon resume its 2019-2020 season in Disney World, and many NBA players are staying at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort. We even caught a glimpse of their Disney bubble barbershop that was sticking up over the big blue privacy wall. But even outside of the NBA news, we’ve been keeping a close eye on Grand Floridian Resort — especially this construction area we’ve been monitoring for quite some time. Although Disney hasn’t officially confirmed what the project is, we’ve presumed that it’s a walkway connecting the resort and Magic Kingdom. As you can see below, today our suspicions were CONFIRMED! Construction Progress Ladies and gentlemen, we have a BRIDGE! A brand new pedestrian bridge has just been installed over the waterway between Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Magic Kingdom. Presumptive Walkway to Magic Kingdom Off to the side, we saw lots of construction equipment, and big pieces of metal framing were laid out in the grass. We’re not sure if these are for the walkway or something unrelated, but the progress on this project is exciting to see! Construction Near Presumptive Walkway The construction area is still off-limits to guests, so don’t get any ideas! But, if you’re riding the Monorail from Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort to Magic Kingdom you can see the construction for yourself outside the window — and we’ll continue to provide more updates as they’re available! Check out the new Tower of Terror Minnie Ears that have just dropped into Hollywood Studios here! Are you going to Magic Kingdom this weekend? 19. When the Disney World Resort hotels and theme parks began their phased reopening, we knew there would be some limitations as to what was available. Ferryboat And that included changes to Disney transportation. It was announced that the water taxi services would be limited, and would only be offered from select resorts to Magic Kingdom. Today, however, we noticed some activity that indicates the water taxis are slowly ramping up! The boat launch is open and welcoming guests back to be taken BACK to select resorts! Magic Kingdom Boat Launch We checked it out for ourselves and noticed a few new safety procedures in place. Each resort that is currently being serviced by the boat transportation system (Disney’s Polynesian Resort, Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, and Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground) has its own designated lane for guests to queue. Magic Kingdom Boat Launch While in line, there are physical distancing floor markers to keep travel parties separated. These markers are staggered between the lanes, so parties aren’t standing side-by-side. Magic Kingdom Boat Launch As you approach the launch itself, the lines split off into a shaded holding area while you wait for your boat to arrive. Magic Kingdom Boat Launch The floor markers continue throughout the boat launch area, keeping parties distanced while boarding the boats. Magic Kingdom Boat Launch So, it looks like even more transportation options are becoming available for guests to take advantage of when traveling around Disney World! Check out what it’s like to ride the BUSES at a reopened Disney World here! What is your preferred mode of Disney World transportation? Let us know in the comments! 20. It was with heavy hearts we reported one of our favorite ice cream spots, Ample Hills Creamery, would no longer be operating at Disney World. Ample Hills Display The company filed for bankruptcy back in March and was purchased by new owners who’ve decided not to renew their contract with Disney. A second Ample Hills Creamery location was being built at Disney Springs before the closures occurred and it was expected to open by winter. Here’s a photo of the construction walls that were surrounding the new Ample Hills Creamery location which still had its “coming soon” signs up until recently. Ample Hills Creamery Construction But as you can see in this picture taken today, the coming soon signs have now been removed! Former Ample Hills Creamery Location Even though we have Gideon’s Bakehouse and Everglazed Donuts & Cold Brew to look forward to, it’s still very sad and gloomy seeing the Ample Hills Creamery signs are no longer up! We had such high ice cream aspirations for this spot! Former Ample Hills Creamery Location Like we said, though — there will be plenty of Gideon’s cookies to help us soften the blow soon. We’re also looking forward to trying their expanded menu which will include cake-by-the-slice along with their own line of unique coffees like the Original Peanut Butter Iced Coffee! Click here to learn more! We will continue to keep you posted on the construction taking place in Disney Springs. So be on the lookout!! 21. We noticed something very interesting while driving around Disney World today! Disney World In the initial phase of reopening, Disney World made some changes to the transportation available around property. And while many forms of transportation have resumed, the Minnie Van service is still unavailable. When in operation, Minnie Vans provide guests with a direct, private ride from one location to another in Disney World or between Disney World and Orlando International Airport. Unlike other forms of Disney transportation, this service does require an additional fee, but it can be helpful to guests on a time crunch! Minnie Van And, while Disney hasn’t announced a date for the Minnie Van service to resume, we did spot something interesting while we were out-and-about today. We saw a Minnie Van driving around Disney World property! Here’s the Minnie Van we spotted driving around Disney World today! We’ll continue to keep an eye out for any updates from Disney about a return date for the Minnie Van service. But for now, it was nice to see this polka-dotted beauty in its natural habitat! 23. In order to enter the newly reopened Disney World parks, all guests must have a Disney Park Pass reservation, in addition to valid park admission. Disney’s Hollywood Studios entrance There are separate reservation calendars for Disney World Resort guests, regular ticket holders, and Annual Passholders. We have noticed that while the reservations can go quickly, occasionally additional availability has opened up. And it looks like that’s the case right now for Disney World Annual Passholders! Just a few days ago, we noticed that the Annual Passholder reservations for Disney’s Hollywood Studios were unavailable through the month of August. Annual Passholder Availability as of July 22nd But today, we saw that more Annual Passholder availability has been added — including reservations for the most difficult park to get into at the moment, Hollywood Studios! Annual Passholder Availability as of July 24th With the recent opening of Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway and the ultra-popular attraction Rise of the Resistance, it seems that Hollywood Studios is the “hottest ticket” at the moment — as we’ve also seen reflected in the longer wait times compared to the other parks.
