Kusafiri Coffee Shop and Bakery is a simple , unassuming window-only bakery in Animal Kingdom’s Africa that boasts a LOT of cupcake goodness. Learn About: Kusafiri Coffee Shop and BakeryAnimal Kingdom Disney World RestaurantsSo, do you remember a few months ago, when we talked about some cupcake shake-ups at Kusafiri? To refresh your memory, a new (at that time) cupcake had joined the line-up: the Lion Cub Cupcake, featuring none other than Simba himself with a mane made of frosting. At the same time, though, we found out that two other stars in the Disney cupcake realm had received a bit of a makeover, which left us slightly underwhelmed (the Zebra Cupcake and the White Chocolate Elephant Cupcake). Well, there have been some more changes in Kusafiri’s cupcake world! First and foremost, with many thanks to DFB reader Cate C., we have a picture of the new Tree of Life Cupcake available now! Looks like this one’s for the chocolate lovers out there . Tree of Life Cupcake Cate shared that while this one was good, she preferred the passion fruit Simba cupcake overall. (Here’s our shot of that cutie, as a reminder ). Lion Cub cupcake But wait — there’s more news to share… take a look at the Kusafiri menu. Kusafiri menu Okay, I know — it’s SUPER small print in the photo, so let me just tell you: The White Chocolate Elephant and Cotton Top Tamarin Cupcakes are no longer on the menu. Now, at this time, we’re trying to determine if the Cotton Top Tamarin Cupcake is still available at its other home, Isle of Java. We’re also wondering, is it possible that these old cupcake friends could make a reappearance when the upcoming Animal Kingdom Starbucks opens its doors in a couple weeks? Or perhaps they will be a part of the dessert line-up at Zuri’s Sweets (an upcoming sweet snack spot in the all- new Harambe Market)? We can only hope, but ultimately time will tell. In the meantime, we can at least rest assured that Kusafiri is still cranking out some great cupcakes! What do you think of the cupcake change-up at Kusafiri Bakery? Tomorrow is Pollinator Day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom! Pollinators are an essential part of our lives as their everyday work ensures full harvests, healthy plants and beautiful flowers. Did you know there are more than 200,000 different species of pollinators? Many you may see in your own backyard! Bees, beetles, ants, butterflies, hummingbirds and even bats are all pollinators! Here are a few quick and easy tips you can do to help these animals keep our world beautiful and healthy: Plant for pollinators! Ask your local nursery what kinds of plants attract certain animals. Want butterflies? How about bees? You have experts in your very own community that can help you determine what to grow in your area to attract your local pollinators and give them food and homes.Reduce your impact by minimizing or eliminating your use of potentially harmful pesticides. If pesticides are necessary in your area, apply them at night when most pollinators aren’t active.Create your very own watering hole. A suspended milk carton with a pinhole in the bottom is sufficient for some insects. Other species, like butterflies, need a small container of water. Refill these containers as often as you can.Get connected with nature! Take a walk, experience the landscape and look for pollinators in sunny, planted areas. At Rafiki’s Planet Watch, we will play interactive games, answer trivia questions and highlight how we can help pollinators all over the world. Join us at the “Elephants and Bees” display to learn how Dr. Joseph Soltis, research scientist for Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment, and teammates are using the knowledge gained from studying our elephants at Disney’s Animal Kingdom to help humans, bees and elephants live in harmony in Kenya. Our smaller guests can transform into human-sized bees during “Build-a-Bee,” and we will show clips from Disneynature’s “Wings of Life” film. If we are lucky, we may even catch some of our pollinating pals in action! Pollinators are truly “buzzworthy” workers that provide us with one out of every three mouthfuls of food we eat (including chocolate!) and give us a bright, beautiful, colorful world. Celebrate with us at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and show appreciation for pollinators every day. You can learn even more about pollinators and plants in your area by visiting pollinator.org. Grizzly Peak Airfield is now open at Disney California Adventure park, and it’s already a hit with guests. This expansion of Grizzly Peak takes guests into California’s High Sierras for a taste of what life was like for the brave men and women who fight wildfires in our California forests in the middle part of the last century. One popular destination in this newly reimagined area is Smokejumpers Grill … which has quite a story of its own. As the story goes, the grill was established by a local Sierra Nevada couple Herb and Millie Madera. A former WWII pilot and parachutist, Herb helped recruit and train the Bearpaw Basin Smokejumpers when the crew was first getting established. His wife, Millie, supplied delicious meals to the men after their long, exhausting days. But one summer day, Millie and her neighbors found themselves and their homes threatened by a raging forest fire. Herb and his smokejumpers sprang into action, rescuing their friends and worked into the night to suppress the rest of the blaze. The heroism of the Bearpaw Basin Smokejumpers moved Herb and Millie to do something special to repay them. They converted the old hangar at the edge of Grizzly Peak Airfield into Smokejumpers Grill, and soon pilots and firefighters from miles away were flying in to enjoy this new Bearpaw Basin tradition. Visitors inside the restaurant today can find relics of the grill’s history, through the mementos and photographs that cover the walls like children’s letters to the courageous smokejumpers, handwritten postcards to the grill’s owners and insignia patches from other firefighting units. So the next time you “drop in” for one of those delicious Smokejumpers Grill burgers, take a look around and discover the restaurant’s story for yourself! From Jonathan’s post this morning, you’re already aware of how beautiful it is where we anchored today. Tucked away at the end of a fjord, it truly felt like we were in a fairytale world. It’s no wonder the “Frozen” filmmakers chose Geiranger as the inspiration for Arendelle. Disney cruisers didn’t have to go far for a taste of local culture. The tiny village’s cafes and shops are the perfect place to take in the views while enjoying a traditional Norwegian meal. Nearby, Geiranger’s Fjord Center and octagonal wooden church were also popular spots for more gorgeous views and cultural immersion. Those wanting adventure joined us for kayaking, hiking and biking tours for an up close view of the area’s stunning landscape. On one awesome Port Adventure, guests paddled through the fjord, gliding along the mountain walls in front of thundering waterfalls. To see more of the breathtaking scenery and amazing adventures Disney cruisers experienced in Geiranger, take a look at this gallery … GalleryNorway Cruise Director Voyage Report: Fjord Exploration In Geiranger with Disney Cruise Line view allIt’s been an incredible voyage so far, and we still have two days left. Not only is tomorrow one last chance to explore the land of Norway during our call on Bergen, it’s also the night “Frozen” fans have been anticipating. A few weeks ago, several new retail and dining experiences were announced for Disney Springs. Among them: The Edison, a lavish “Industrial Gothic”-style restaurant, bar and nighttime destination that will feature exceptional classic American food, artisanal craft cocktails and unparalleled live entertainment. Similar to its sister location on the west coast, The Edison at Disney Springs will be dedicated to a resurgence of old-world style, sophistication and romance. Themed to a 1920s-period electric company, the space will recall an exuberant era of invention and imagination. With 35-foot ceilings and a range of themed areas to explore, The Edison will feature nightly entertainment including contortionists, palm readers, DJs and more. Today, I’ve also got more details on STK Orlando – a new rendering and another fun bit of info: this location will be the only spot that offers rooftop dining, in a gorgeous lounge setting, at Disney Springs. Progress also continues on Morimoto Asia, the first pan-Asian restaurant from celebrity Chef Masaharu Morimoto. STK Orlando and Morimoto Asia will debut later this year. The Edison will open in 2016. Which new restaurant are you most excited for? Tell me in the comments below – I’d love to know! Today we mark the 55th anniversary of a Disneyland attraction very close to my heart. On June 10, 1960, Pack Mules Through Nature’s Wonderland opened in Frontierland. As a child growing up in Anaheim, my family would visit Disneyland several times a year. I always asked to go on the mules first. I was excited even standing in the queue, on the wooden planks laid next to the trail, just to be close to these four-legged transports. Once in the saddle, I was transformed, dreaming my own wild west dreams, as the mules carried us over the Frontierland terrain and into the town of Rainbow Ridge. It’s not unrealistic to think that the love I have for horses was born in those moments. For readers not old enough to have enjoyed the Disneyland mule attraction in one of its three iterations, (Mule Pack from 1955-1959, Rainbow Ridge Pack Mules, and Pack Mules Through Nature’s Wonderland from 1960-1973) you can still share some of the nostalgia when riding on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The town of Rainbow Ridge, once home to the mules carrying would-be cowboys and cowgirls like myself, still stands in the shadow of the mountain. We have some exciting news today for you about the 2015 Epcot Food and Wine Festival! We’ve confirmed that Tequila Pairing Lunches in the Mexico Pavilion are back as part of the Special Events line up! I had the chance to attend the luncheon a while back. It was a great way to spend the afternoon — sampling tequila, and learning how this versatile spirit can pair beautifully with different menu items. In anticipation of this year’s lineup, our friends from the Mexico Pavilion recently held a tasting to determine just what would make the menu cut. We’re excited to share some menu descriptions straight from La Cava del Tequila! Let’s take a closer look. Menu Planned for the Tequila Pairing Lunch at the 2015 Epcot Food and Wine FestivalWhen I attended the Tequila Pairing Lunch, we enjoyed four courses, paired with three different tequilas as well as Agovera Liqueur. (This event is not for the faint of heart. ) Display Table at Entry of Luncheon As of the writing of this post, the lunch will include four courses paired with tequilas. But please keep in mind, the dishes are subject to change! Anything is possible between now and Festival Go-Time on September 25! Your journey through the world of tequila will start with a Flautas de Carnitas — a mini crispy Flauta filled with Pork Carnitas and accompanied by Avocado, Cream, Queso Foam, Roasted Serrano Pepper, and Tomato. Flautas de Carnitas The next course, Sopa de Chile Poblano y Calabaza, will be prepared with Roasted Poblano Pepper, Zucchini, Cilantro, Queso Fresco, and Guajillo Pepper Oil. The Main Entrée will be a combination of Mar y Tierra– Pan-Seared Snapper and New York Strip — served with a creamy Potato Puree, Cactus Salad, Tequila and Dried Peppers Butter Sauce. It won’t look exactly like the two pictures below — it’s likely to be a combo plate — but these photos will give you an idea. Mar y Tierra: Pan Seared Fish Taco Mar y Tierra: New York Strip A Sweet Ending to the meal will feature a fun play on a classic — Pudin de Pan, or Bread Pudding with Chocolate Dirt, atop Vanilla Ice Cream. (Note that the dessert will not include the Tequila Cream shown in the photo below.) Pudin de Pan: Bread Pudding with Chocolate Dirt Will Be Served Vanilla Ice Cream Once again, we’ll reiterate that these menu items are tentative, and presentations are likely to change. Still, it’s very exciting to get a sneak peek into the creative process…and makes me want to head to La Cava for some tequila! Did you know that Bengal Barbecue (Disneyland skewer spot extraordinaire) just turned 25 years old? Bengal Barbecue sign So, what better way to celebrate than a stop for some — okay, make that ALL — the skewers on the menu (and maaaaaybe a few other treats to boot)! That’s exactly what I did on my recent trip to Disneyland. Say hello to the big ol’ scary Tiger, because we’re FINALLY heading back to Bengal Barbecue! (I missed you!) AtmosphereSo, what’s the scene like in this Adventureland spot? Well, you’re pretty much looking at it . Bengal Barbecue sign Bengal Barbecue ordering area Ok, that’s not entirely true. There are a few umbrella-covered tables nearby, but portability is really the name of the game here (in essence, it’s a kiosk). Still, even for a space this small, it’s certainly not without a few Disney details. Zebra carving Hi, Mickey! And the food itself plays a part in creating the atmosphere, too, since you can watch Cast Member grill masters at work, creating your order with a side of char-grilled smells wafting through the air. This chick, by the way, was awesome. Bengal Barbecue grill And what are they grilling up at the Barbecue these days? Let’s take a look… EatsIt’s all things Jungle Skewers at Bengal Barbecue… and judging by the long lines you’ll almost always encounter here, everyone seems just fine with that! Bengal Barbecue menu There are a few other “Extra Provisions” available for hungry jungle explorers, as well — a couple of classic Disney items (Mickey Pretzels and Jalapeño Cheese-stuffed Pretzels, to be precise) and the Bengal’s very own specialty, Tiger Tails. “Extra Provisions” But we’ll start with the main attraction: the Skewers. An enormously popular choice is the Bacon-wrapped Asparagus Skewer (its given Bengal name is the Safari Skewer), which has reached something close to legendary status. And that’s with good reason. I LOVE me some asparagus, and I LOVE me some bacon, so this combo is a no brainer. Gorgeous, right? Bacon-wrapped Asparagus Safari Skewer The asparagus takes on some of the smokey flavor of the bacon (not to mention the grill), while still giving you that “Hey, I’m on vacation and totally had a veggie” sense of accomplishment. Nicely done! Speaking of veggies, next on our list is the Outback Vegetable Skewer: mine was made with zucchini, summer squash, red onion, peppers, and a petite red potato (available veggies may vary a little on your visit). Again, the char looked — and tasted — pretty fantastic. Outback Vegetable Skewer Obviously this is a great choice for vegetarians, but I’d honestly recommend this one to anyone looking for a light snack that won’t weigh you down. With no sauce to speak of, it’s decidedly simple: what you see is what you get, but it is well-prepared. And obviously you can pair this with any of the others for a little something to round out your meat skewers. The Banyan Beef Skewer is the “Hot & Spicy” option you see on the menu. This one is definitely my favorite of the bunch. As many folks know, there’s “spicy,” and then there’s “Disney spicy” (which, in many cases, is to say not very spicy at all). The Banyan Beef Skewer, though, really does carry a nice peppery kick! Banyan Beef Hot and Spicy Skewer I love it, but if you’re spice sensitive, you might opt for the next skewer instead. The Bengal Skewer is the sweet option of the two beefs. In the same way that the hot & spicy lives up to its name, so does the Sweet Zulu Sauce you read about on the menu, though it’s pretty close to your basic teriyaki. Bengal Beef Skewer It’s tasty, but I prefer the Banyan Beef. I’ve long been a fan of the Chieftain Chicken Skewer, served up in a Polynesian sweet-and-sour style sauce. And I enjoyed it this time, too, though on this visit it may have been slightly overshadowed by the Safari Skewer. Chieftain Chicken Skewer Even with all that meat-and-veggie goodness from the skewers, you have to know that it’s not a trip to Bengal Barbecue without a Tiger Tail! Surprisingly soft, grilled bread — they’re just the perfect addition for dipping through whatever sauce you may have leftover from your skewers, but also a great grab-and-go snack in their own right. Tiger Tails To wash it all down, I grabbed the specialty drink, which debuted recently as part of the unique treats available for the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration: Pomegranate Piranha Lemonade. It’s lemonade flavored with mango and pineapple, complete with pomegranate boba pearls and topped with passion fruit-mango foam. Pomegranate Piranha Lemonade on the menu Pomegranate Piranha Lemonade Of course, this isn’t Bengal Barbecue’s first boba beverage (remember last summer’s Venomade debut?). But I really enjoyed the occasional bursts of the fruity pomegranate pearls with the tart lemonade. The foam, though? That I could take or leave. Pomegranate Pearls It’s good, but keep in mind that when you’re at Bengal Barbecue, you’re also just steps away from the Tiki Juice Bar, which serves Dole Whips with teeny-tiny umbrellas. So, there’s that. Still, a nice, fruity beverage sure does hit the spot when taken alongside all that char-grilled goodness that I’m glad I had the chance to enjoy once more on my trip. OverallDon’t let the long lines deter you — there’s a reason this spot has reached icon status over the past twenty-five years. The small, specialized menu manages to boast a something-for-everyone variety with terrific char-grilled flavors. Happy Birthday, Bengal Barbecue! Here’s wishing you many more delicious years!
