  2. Did you know that there is a barber shop at Magic Kingdom Park? If you didn’t, you are missing out and need to visit it!

I have been two times to the Harmony Barber Shop, located in Town Square near the fire station and the Emporium store on Main Street U.S.A.

    efhc476773

Since I am a Disney obsessed fan, I wanted my son to get his first haircut at the barber shop. Esa visita was in February of this year, when he was 17 months old. It included a sample of my son’s trimmed hair, a certificate and embroidered Mickey ears that read ‘first haircut.’ I admit that I cried during the experience. Mi bebé now had a big boy haircut, courtesy of one of the barbers at the shop.

    efhc476772

The second time was this past October, and we had the blessing of having the same barber from the first visit. And although we didn’t get any special recuerdos, certificate or ears, I confess to crying…again!

The barbers and the Cast at the Harmony Barber Shop are simply maravillosos. They help little kids (and their parents) stay calm during their haircuts, with bubbles, stickers and toys. The barber even gave me tissues to wipe my tears, both times!

And I also got special pixie dust, even though I wasn’t the one getting a haircut!

So mamás y papás, don’t wait too long to call 407-WDW-DINE to book an appointment!

  3. The Disney Conservation Fund (DCF) supports organizations working all over the world, through its “Reverse the Decline, Increase the Time” initiative, to reverse the decline of threatened species and increase the time kids and families spend in nature. We’re grateful to have the opportunity to support this important work, and the amazing organizations and individuals that carry out this mission each day. We provide support to honor conservationists who have gone above and beyond, demonstrating passion, courage, and tenacity in tackling some of the biggest challenges in protecting the planet’s resources. Each year we’re proud to honor a new class of Disney Conservation Heroes.

Let’s get to know a few of the 2016 Conservation Heroes:

The Karisoke Research Center Gorilla Trackers and Antipoachers
Nominated by Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International

This team of 70 courageous people is directly responsible for the current growth and stability of Rwanda’s critically endangered mountain gorillas. Working in teams to protect specific groups of gorillas, they’ve had dangerous close calls related to the extreme elements and landscape, as well as direct run-ins with poachers. The trackers can tell each gorilla apart and know their histories and behaviors well. Collectively the group spends 365 days 110,000 hours per year protecting and monitoring the gorillas, supporting scientific research, and helping to maintain the biodiversity of the forest, as they have done for nearly 50 years.

Diorene Smith Cabellos Nominated by ZSL America

    Diorene Smith Cabellos
    Nominated by ZSL America

Diorene Smith Cabellos established the first and only ongoing research program to monitor the elusive pygmy sloth, which is found only on a small island off the coast of Panama. Diorene collects crucial population data on this critically endangered species and also studies human disturbance and use of natural resources across the island. Her work requires enduring inhospitable field conditions which require innovative solutions to technology that malfunctions in the wet, salt-laden environment. Managing and conserving the pygmy sloth is a sensitive issue locally, but Diorene works closely with local schools, divers, and fishermen to raise awareness and promote sustainable resource use. What may be most amazing about Diorene is that she’s managed to do all of this important conservation work in her spare time while working as a full-time zoo curator and veterinarian!

Sergei Sleptsov Nominated by International Crane Foundation Ivan Danilov Nominated by International Crane Foundation

    Sergei Sleptsov and Ivan Danilov
    Nominated by International Crane Foundation

Each summer and fall Sergei Sleptsov and Ivan Danilov endure Russia’s harsh tundra conditions – coping with daily temperature fluctuations of 50 degrees or more, clouds of mosquitos and gnats, and rain and snow – to conduct vital research on the critically endangered Siberian crane. Their field region covers two million acres and often they are only able to reach their study sites on foot, carrying heavy supplies and gear. Sergei has provided invaluable data on cranes, participating in many international field expeditions to monitor their migration. He was even one of the first scientists who was able to capture Siberian crane chicks in order to band them. In his long career, Ivan has led efforts to establish protected areas for cranes and collected valuable scientific data used to justify protected area status in key crane breeding areas.

All of these individuals demonstrate that with hard work and dedication you can make your community – and the world – a better place. It’s our honor to recognize this year’s Disney Conservation Heroes – they inspire us with their stories and commitment to reverse the decline of wildlife. Looking for even more inspiration? 6. Actress and conservationist Bindi Irwin, along with her boyfriend, America wakeboarder Chandler Powell, recently visited Walt Disney World Resort. Bindi was kind enough to stop for a quick pic with “The Lion King’s” own Rafiki just outside the Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. These friends (Rafiki means “friend” in Swahili) had a lot to chat about, sharing a life’s passion of wildlife conservation projects and education.

Asante sana to Matt Stroshane for the great photo!

  7. We often consider turkey or ham for holiday meals, but you’re looking for a meatless main dish, try this sweet potato gnocchi from Artist Point at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. The fluffy dumplings are paired with rich brown butter and hearty Brussels sprouts and mushrooms.

It take a little time to make the gnocchi (noh-KEE), but the comforting payoff is worth it. You can roast the Brussels sprouts and mushrooms while the dough is resting, and then the dish comes together in minutes.
    Happy eating!

SWEET POTATO GNOCCHI WITH BROWN BUTTER
    Serves 4

    SWEET POTATO GNOCCHI

    • 2 (12-ounce) sweet potatoes
    • 1 egg yolk
    • 2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour
    • 3/4 teaspoon coarse salt
    • 8 fresh sage leaves, thinly sliced, for serving
    • Aged semi-firm cheese, shaved thin, for serving

    BROWN BUTTER

    • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter
    • Coarse salt

ROASTED BRUSSELS SPROUTS AND WILD MUSHROOMS

    • 3/4 pound Brussels sprouts, halved
    • 3/4 pound mixed wild mushrooms
    • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

    FOR GNOCCHI:

    1. Peel sweet potatoes and cut into 2-inch cubes. Place in a steamer basket set in a pan with 2 inches water over medium-high heat. Cover pan tightly; steam until tender, about 7 to 10 minutes. Set aside to cool to room temperature.
    2. Press cooled sweet potatoes through a potato ricer into a large bowl. Make a well in the center and add egg yolk, 2 cups flour, and salt. Stir until mixture holds together as a soft dough, adding more flour if needed, a tablespoon at a time. Mixture should be soft but not sticky.
    3. Divide dough into 6 pieces and roll each piece into a 1-inch-wide rope. Cut each rope into 1-inch pieces. Roll each piece over the tines of a fork, if desired.
    4. Place gnocchi on a lightly floured sheet pan and refrigerate 1 hour.

    FOR BROWN BUTTER:

    1. Place butter in a medium heavy-bottom saucepan over medium-high heat.
    2. Cook until butter is golden brown and smells nutty.
    3. Keep warm over very low heat.

FOR ROASTED BRUSSELS SPROUTS AND WILD MUSHROOMS:

    1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Toss Brussels sprouts and mushrooms with oil in a large bowl.
    2. Spread mixture on a large sheet pan. Roast until edges are golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from oven and keep warm until ready to use.

    TO SERVE:

    1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Working in 3 batches, cook gnocchi 5 to 6 minutes, until cooked through but still tender.
    2. Combine cooked gnocchi, roasted Brussels sprouts and mushrooms, and enough brown butter sauce to coat in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook, tossing gently, until heated through.
    3. Garnish with sage and a shaved semi- firm aged cheese.

  8. You waited all year for pumpkin spice, and Karamell-Küche in Epcot’s Germany Pavilion does not want you to be disappointed!

Several new seasonal treats await at this tiny sweets shop in the World Showcase. Karamell-Küche is one of the best places to satisfy your sweet tooth, which makes sense considering the name translates to “caramel kitchen” in English!

And who doesn’t think a caramel kitchen is a good idea?

When you walk in, you’ll see the treats in all of their sugary glory behind the glass and probably some cast members working on a new batch, too. They have caramel-dipped everything: apples, strawberries, cupcakes, cookies, and a DFB favorite, the caramel-covered popcorn.

    It’s Werther’s caramel central.

    Karamell-Küche sign

    Karamell-Küche sign

Let’s check out the new treats! There’s a mixture of seasonal and regular flavors, so we’ll start with the most festive…

    Pumpkin Spice Caramel Square

The name says it all. The pumpkin flavor is mixed in with the caramel and topped with three adorable pumpkin seeds.

    Pumpkin Spice Caramel Square

    Pumpkin Spice Caramel Square

Unlike a the famous latte and other pumpkin spice treats, this one is actually less spice flavor and more pumpkin. It’s also super sweet!

    Cute little pumpkin seeds

    Cute little pumpkin seeds

The texture was perfectly smooth and chewy. Although not the pumpkin spicy-ness I expected, I really liked this new treat!

    Cross-section of caramel

    Cross-section of caramel

This one is $4.49 and Disney Dining Plan snack credit eligible. If you like your pumpkin on the sweet side, I think you’ll enjoy this one!

    Caramel Gingersnap

However, if you want a little bite with your snack, you might want to choose this guy—the Caramel Gingersnap.

    Caramel Gingersnap

    Caramel Gingersnap

As you can see, it’s a gorgeous color. That deep reddish brown is thanks to the ginger spice mixed into the caramel. It smells JUST like a gingersnap, and it is yummy!

    Close-up of Caramel Gingersnap

    Close-up of Caramel Gingersnap

To add to the spicy ginger flavor, the top is dusted with ground ginger and a dot of cream. At first I worried that it would be TOO much ginger for my taste, but I thought the flavors were balanced very well. I think I tasted a hint of cinnamon in there, too!

    Cross-section of Caramel Gingersnap

    Cross-section of Caramel Gingersnap

It seemed like this one was a bit thicker than the pumpkin caramel. This one is also $4.49 and DDP snack credit eligible. If you love gingerbread, I think you’ll be happy with this choice!

    Eggnog Caramel Square

I have to admit, I wasn’t quite sure what to think about eggnog and caramel. But hang with me…

    Eggnog Caramel Square

    Eggnog Caramel Square

So, it’s not quite as pretty as the other holiday caramels, but it is tasty!! I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Again, the eggnog flavor is mixed into the chewy caramel.

    Eggnog Caramel close-up

    Eggnog Caramel close-up

The top is dusted with nutmeg and a bit of cream. The eggnog flavor is very strong, which is a good thing! This one was less sweet than the pumpkin option and has a great texture.

    Eggnog Caramel cross-section

    Eggnog Caramel cross-section

We only get to enjoy eggnog once a year, so I think that in itself is a good excuse to try this caramel. It’s $4.49 and snack credit eligible. I’d start the holidays early and go get one ASAP ;)

    Salted Caramel Cupcake

Now for the less seasonal but just as delicious snacks! I’m SUPER jazzed to see this, since this location used to have cupcakes years ago and then got rid of them. So it’s so great to see them back!

    Salted Caramel Cupcakes

    Salted Caramel Cupcakes

    Salted Caramel Cupcake

    Salted Caramel Cupcake

The Salted Caramel Cupcake is a dark chocolate cake and caramel buttercream icing with caramel drizzled over top, and it is just as rich as it sounds!

    Salted Caramel cross-section

    Salted Caramel Cupcake close-up

If you can tell from the picture, the salt is actually mixed into the icing! I love that because instead of getting just a couple bites of salty flavor, it stays with you for the whole cupcake. It’s a good balance for the sweetness of the icing.

    Salted Caramel Cupcake cross-section

    Salted Caramel Cupcake cross-section

And as you can see, there’s a lot of it! Not only is it tall, it sinks down into the cupcake. *swoon*

    Salted Caramel Cupcake close-up

    Salted Caramel Cupcake close-up

I have to tell you about the cake part, too. This cupcake is DENSE! It’s a fudgy texture—almost brownie like—and so good! It’s very very chocolaty, so get ready!

Overall, I did love this one, but I think you have to love sweetness to enjoy it! It’s $5.59 and DDP snack credit eligible, but I really think you could share with as hefty and rich it is!

Mickey Krispie Treat with Werther’s Caramel

I saved the most adorable for last! The caramel-drizzled Mickey Rice Krispie Treat!

    Mickey Krispy with Werther's Caramel

    Mickey Krispy with Werther’s Caramel

Not only is this treat adorable, it is so good and so different from a classic Mickey Krispy.

Mickey Krispy Treat with Werther's Caramel

Mickey Krispy Treat with Werther’s Caramel

I thought it would taste the same plus chocolate and caramel, but no! The chocolate ears and Werther’s Caramel really does something to a Mickey Krispy.

    Mickey-Krispy-with-Werthers-Caramel_Kara

Mickey Krispy with Werther’s Caramel ears

The milk chocolate covering the ears is pretty thick and the caramel drizzle is even thicker! (I think the caramel being Werther’s makes it even more delicious though I have no scientific proof.)

    Mickey-Krispy-with-Werthers-Caramel_Kara

Mickey Krispy with Werther’s Caramel close-up

As you can tell, this is a new favorite of mine. Between nostalgia and delicious, creamy caramel, this is definitely one of my top Disney treats. It’s $5.49 and DDP snack credit eligible, and I think you should go get one now!

    Overall

It’s really hard to say something negative about any of these new treats. Karamell-Küche knocked it out of the park again, and I hope you love them as much as I did! As far as we know, and judging by past holiday seasons, we expect the seasonal items to stick around for a couple months. Whether you’re looking for something simple or seasonal, they have great options.

  10. It has been fifteen years since we last saw the original headstones fill the hillsides at the Haunted Mansion in Disneyland park. Claude Coats, Marc Davis and X Atencio are just a few of the masterminds behind the Haunted Mansion whose whimsical headstones disappeared. I spoke with art director Kim Irvine who explained how the headstones made it back to their original home.

The original headstones and the Imagineers they represented are as follows:

    • Claude Coats (lead designer – specializing in backgrounds and environments, he also developed the Omnimover layout)
      • At Peaceful Rest Lies Brother Claude
        Planted Here Beneath This Sod

    • Marc Davis (lead designer – specializing in character design and sight gags)
      • In memory of our Patriarch
        Dear Departed Grandpa Marc

    • X Atencio (script and song)
      • Requiescat Francis Xavier
No time off for good behavior R.I.P.

    • Bill Martin (concept architect)

  14. This month, I stopped by Norway Pavilion as part of my shopping journey around World Showcase at Epcot. You may recall I’ve been visiting each pavilion this year highlighting the beautiful architecture and unique shopping experiences. I served as an attraction manager in Norway Pavilion in 2003, so it was nice revisiting my former home.

Unforgettable Shopping at Epcot – Norway Pavilion

The pavilion opened in World Showcase in May 1988. The architecture reflects several Norse towns, including Bergen, Alesund, Oslo, and Setesda. At its entrance, guests are greeted by a 4/5-scale replica of Norway’s 12 century Gol Stave Church.

Unforgettable Shopping at Epcot – Norway Pavilion

The Puffin’s Roost is the main shop at the pavilion. The shop is a series of interconnected rooms that offers Norway-themed apparel, home goods, fragrances, and jewelry. Guests will also find outerwear by Helly Hansen and gorgeous wool sweaters by Dale of Norway. Toward the back of the shop, guests will find a selection of products from Disney’s “Frozen.”

One of my favorite things to do at the shop is take a photo with the gigantic troll. I have many family photos throughout the years at that spot. Nearby, guests will find troll merchandise including figures and apparel.

Unforgettable Shopping at Epcot – Norway Pavilion

In summer 2016, The Wandering Reindeer shop opened outside Royal Sommerhus at the pavilion. You may recall reading about this “Frozen”-themed destination shop in a previous Disney Parks Blog article.

Guests may find select items from this pavilion using the Shop Disney Parks mobile app. To download, please visit DisneyWorld.com/Shop.

Here are some photographs of my favorite items guests will find in this pavilion. All I need now is some school bread from Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe.
