  2. December is easily one of the busiest months of the year in Disney World. The holidays are HERE! However, it’s typically busier toward the end of the month with the Christmas and New Year holidays. So imagine our surprise when we walk into Disney World today and it’s, like, bonkers busy. We’re not exaggerating either. We knew we were in for it when this was what the entrance to Disney’s Hollywood Studios looked like early in the morning. Hollywood Studios Crowds Not to mention that the crowds on Main Street U.S.A. in Magic Kingdom are INTENSE, to say the least. Main Street Crowds And yes, no matter what direction you’re facing, they’re a lot to take in. More crowds But the real surprise? Animal Kingdom crowds are heavy today too! This park, while we love it, is typically underrated during the holidays. But today everyone got the memo and it feels like they’re all here with their whole extended family. Animal Kingdom Crowds Wait times are also reflecting these crowds, with the highest wait being at 120 minutes around 10:30AM. More people than we expected! 3. The Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser may be gone, but it’s not forgotten. Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser To say that the Star Wars hotel-that-wasn’t-really-a-hotel was controversial might be an understatement, and there were some things about the whole interactive LARP-like experience that still leave Disney fans scratching their heads. However, a lot of things about the Galactic Starcruiser just outright shocked fans, so let’s take a look at those things that had us all like . The Concept So one might think Disney announcing a hotel devoted to all things Star Wars would be a hotel, right? Well, a lot of fans were shocked — and maybe even a little excited — to learn that the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser would be a two-day “cruise” in space on a ship (read: building) called The Halcyon (where Han and Leia apparently honeymooned) with all kinds of immersive experiences that would let Star Wars fans live out their wildest fantasies. Original Concept art for Galactic Starcruiser atrium Even for Disney, that sounded pretty ambitious. The scale of the Starcruiser’s concept was hard to grasp at the time and it possibly raised expectations that might have been TOO high when the experience finally opened. What’s Going to Happen to All the Stuff in the Star Wars Hotel? The Price So Disney got Star Wars fans HYPED for this new experience. Yes, we expected the Galactic Starcruiser to be pricey. But even WE did not expect it to be as pricey as almost $5,000 for two people — and that was just the price for the lowest tier of room. YIKES! Pretty much EVERYONE was shocked when these prices were announced. The Galactic Starcruiser in Walt Disney World Granted, that price got you all your food, two full nights of accommodations, a day at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and the whole interactive experience. But the cost was so high that many fans were priced right out of ever being able to afford a voyage, which was also a shock for those who were initially interested in it. Could Disney’s Star Wars Hotel Make a COMEBACK? Here’s What We Know. Not A Typical Disney Hotel Stay For the price, many fans expected that the rooms on the Galactic Starcruiser would be more like something you would find at Disney’s deluxe hotels. You know…big, luxurious beds; lots of space? They were wrong. The rooms were just teeny cabins — like you’d find on a cruise ship — with tight spaces and no windows (granted, there were fake windows with views of “space”). BUT there were bunkbeds, which is pretty cool. Starcruiser Cabin Perhaps even more daunting is the fact that you had to stay on the “ship” for the whole two days, save for a brief trip to Batuu. Because of the immersive nature of the experience, Disney couldn’t have guests just randomly walking out of the hotel throughout their stay. Granted, there was a “room” that actually let guests sit in the outdoors for a little while, but it was still a confined area. Claustrophobes had to beware! 6 Things Disney World Could Do With the CLOSED Star Wars Hotel Building Disney Added NEW Galactic Starcruiser Characters To Canon…(Also, Han and Leia Wuz Here) Want to know how to create controversy with a Star Wars fan? Add new characters to the canon! Well, that’s exactly what Disney did with the Galactic Starcruiser, which brought in a brand new cast of characters; these included a Twi’lek entertainer called Gaya and the ship’s captain, Captain Keevan. These characters interacted with existing characters in the Star Wars universe including Rey, Kylo Ren, Chewbacca, and more. Yes, everything that happened aboard the Halcyon was considered canon in the Star Wars universe. Captain Keevan at the Captain’s Table Disney doubled down on the Starcruiser characters as canon with several books and comics, too, including The Princess and the Scoundrel, which introduced the Halcyon ship itself as canon because it’s now officially the location where Han and Leia spent their honeymoon. At the time, Captain Keevan was the quartermaster on the ship. Why the Star Wars Hotel Closed in Disney World Surprise Appearance By Yoda For those who DID get to experience Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, there was a BIG surprise that was kept under wraps. There’s a point during the experience where Halcyon guests, along with Rey, discover a Jedi Holocron. On that holocron? A message from none other than Master Yoda. Hologram of Yoda YODA, y’all. Yoda made an appearance on the Halcyon and we are STILL shook. This might have been the highlight of our two-day journey on the ship, but it was also a HUGE surprise. “It Didn’t Perform” — Disney Exec. Announces How the Star Wars Hotel Went WRONG So goodbye, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. You were QUITE an experience, to say the least. We hope that Disney isn’t completely through with the concept yet, as it really was something unique that had not ever been done before. We’ll just have to see, though… Stay tuned to DFB for more! 4. Disney World is always changing, which was always something Walt had in mind when he created his first theme park, Disneyland. Spaceship Earth in EPCOT Most recently, we’ve seen a massive EPCOT transformation begin to head toward completion. We’ve even seen the TRON ride finally open. There are new restaurants on the way. Plus Disney has some BIG plans for other parts of the resort. Some of those plans, though, are SUPER secret — and well, WE HAVE QUESTIONS. These Disney World projects are so secretive that we don’t have a lot of information on them, and we don’t know what their status is. When the Magic Kingdom expansion will happen First, Disney just basically teased a Magic Kingdom expansion, but then later confirmed that it would be happening. We got a lot of talk about the area behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, but that’s about it. Some blue sky concepts were thrown out there, but we don’t have anything definitive except that it will happen and it will be the largest expansion ever for Magic Kingdom. Okay, we NEED MORE. What’s going behind this? We need answers! The biggest mystery, though, is WHEN will it happen? When will we start seeing construction at Magic Kingdom? When would Disney like to have this done by? We know that Disney just pledged to spend a LOT of money on theme parks, but it seems like the theme parks getting most of the love right now are not the ones in the U.S. Give us a timeline, Disney! Disney Teases NEW Details on HUGE Magic Kingdom Expansion When Dinoland, U.S.A. will close Speaking of leaving us hanging, Disney announced that it was closing Dinoland, U.S.A. and replacing it with something else. Okay, so we’ll admit we LOVE Dinoland, and this made us really sad, but now we need to know WHEN we need to get that last ride on Dinosaur. We’re going to miss this We know Disney is entertaining both Encanto and Indiana Jones ideas for the area, but, we want to know when Dinoland will close for construction. We’d like to spend Dinoland’s last day THERE with Chip ‘n’ Dale in their little Dino outfits, as well as with Dr. Grant Seeker, who will have to file for unemployment once Disney shuts down the Dino Institute. Did You Know About All of These Hidden Dinoland U.S.A. Details in Animal Kingdom?! What’s going on with the restaurants that haven’t reopened? Okay, we’re actually shocked that there are STILL restaurants that have remained closed in Disney World since 2020. We’re still waiting for Disney to announce plans for them. Remember 1900 Park Fare? It used to have a great character breakfast. What about the Grand Floridian Tea Room? Right now, it’s just an activity room that occasionally opens when it rains — what an insult! It’s not open for tea, though. Over in EPCOT’s Morocco Pavilion, Restaurant Marrakesh remains closed. We need to know if we’ll ever be able to enjoy these restaurants again, Disney. 2 Disney World Restaurants Are CLOSED With NO Reopening Date in Sight What happened to the Play! Pavilion? One part of EPCOT’s historic transformation was to be something called the Play! Pavilion, an area in the previous Wonders of Life pavilion that would offer ways to interact and play in a fun “city” setting. It would be a digital metropolis with interactive games, experiences, entertainment, characters, and more in both a virtual and real setting. ©Disney Well, the building is still there. We’ve even seen some work being done on it. But as of January 2023, the EPCOT map removed the previous “Future Home of PLAY!” and we haven’t heard a word about it since. It seemed like a perfect fit for EPCOT, but will it ever happen? Here’s what we’re missing The Spaceship Earth Update Anyone who’s been on Spaceship Earth recently knows it is overdue for a serious update. The ride hasn’t been updated since 2008. A LOT has happened with communication since then, so why hasn’t it been updated? Well, this was another project that was supposed to happen with the EPCOT transformation, but it hasn’t happened yet and is currently on hold. Spaceship Earth needs an update Disney mentioned a lot of things coming to the ride, including new scenes, story elements, and narration. However, Spaceship Earth is still collecting dust while it’s stuck in the early 2000s like flip phones and Windows XP. What Is Going on With the Spaceship Earth Update in Disney World? What’s going on with the Reflections Resort? In 2019, Disney announced a new hotel called Reflections — A Disney Lakeside Lodge. Permits were filed and everything seemed set for the resort to be built — and then 2020 happened. Then construction seemed to have stalled on the project, and Disney got VERY quiet about their plans for the new resort, which would have had a Princess and the Frog theme. Reflections Concept Art © Disney So at this point, we could assume that Reflections is canceled, right? Well, we’re not so sure about that. Disney recently got an extension on a permit for work at the resort. That doesn’t necessarily mean the company is moving forward with it, but the permit extension was for five years, so they are potentially considering it, maybe? Whatever the case, Disney is being VERY secretive about it. Is a NEW Hotel Coming to Disney World? Disney Can’t Seem To Make Up Its Mind. Will the Mary Poppins expansion at EPCOT happen? Well, let’s return to the EPCOT transformation, or rather, things that were supposed to be part of the transformation but never happened. Disney promised us a Mary Poppins attraction at the UK pavilion. Have you seen a Mary Poppins attraction at the UK Pavilion? Because we surely haven’t! Mary Poppins attraction concept art Well, Disney did release a statement that the project was postponed. Okay, we can accept that — we can wait. However, signs began pointing to it being canceled, although we haven’t had an official update on the project since October 2022. Has the Mary Poppins Project at Disney World Been Canceled? Disney is good at keeping secrets and they could surprise us with some big announcements in 2024. We’ll be looking out for those announcements, so stay tuned to DFB for more. 5. We are expecting BIG things from the EPCOT transformation! World Celebration EPCOT has been in limbo with construction for YEARS, now. But it’s all set to be over this month (according to Disney). And little by little, we are seeing updates and changes appear around the park. We recently spotted a change that had us both excited and possibly a little startled…? At this point, we don’t know if we love it or hate it. We’re always excited when we see things being completed in EPCOT. Each one means we’re getting closer and closer to the end. So when we noticed this new path aesthetic we were floored (pun intended)! We saw what appears to be a metal grate-style ground on the walking path where the construction walls were recently pushed back. Only, it’s already kinda rusted? – which is hopefully on purpose and part of the old-school, Walt-approved aesthetic? New walkway aesthetic It’s no sparkling cement, but it is kind of cool-looking. However, we also noticed that anytime an ECV goes over it makes a startling noise. This is a little unnerving! New rusty pathway The aesthetic choice here is interesting. We’ll be curious to see what is behind the construction walls and if it brings this pre-rusted ground a bit more context. Then, maybe we can all decide how we really feel about it. You can find this new grated ground near Connections Cafe (Starbucks), so head over to check it out for yourself! 6. When it comes to box office returns, 2023 just really hasn’t been Disney’s year. ©Disney Although we saw a LOT of big Disney movies released this year, from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny to The Marvels to Wish and more, the box office returns for those movies have come in under expectations. But why? Well, according to Disney CEO Bob Iger, part of the problem may be focusing on quantity over quality. Bob Iger recently sat down at The New York Times’ annual DealBook summit for an interview, and according to CNN, he made comments about what he feels the company has done wrong recently with its film releases. This year saw the release of two Marvel movies, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels, both of which underperformed at the box office. Iger said, “Quality needs attention to deliver quality, it doesn’t happen by accident. And quantity, in our case, diluted quality — and Marvel has suffered greatly from that.” He added, “I would say right now my number one priority is to help the studio turn around creatively.” (Iger seems to have a lot of number one priorities lately.) ©Marvel But he also acknowledged that sequels could be part of the problem. He commented that Disney had “made too many” sequels that neither audiences nor critics loved. “There has to be a good reason to make them,” Iger said. “Often, the story is not as strong as the original story, that can be a problem, but it just has to have a reason, you have to have a reason to make it beyond commerce. There has to be an artistic reason to make it, and we’ve made too many.” However, this comes after sequels have been announced for both Toy Story and Frozen, two franchises that Iger seems to think have more potential. ©Disney Interestingly enough, Disney didn’t release any sequels in 2023 other than three Marvel movies. One, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, actually had a solid performance at the box office and was one of Bob Iger’s tent pole references in his recent Earnings Call. According to Box Office Mojo, that film scored over $845 billion, making it the fourth highest-grossing movie of 2023. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 at AMC Disney’s animated film Elemental initially didn’t meet its weekend premiere goal. However, that movie rallied and eventually took in over $495 billion worldwide. Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid brought in a total of over $569 billion. Elemental Photo Op in Hollywood Studios When it comes to The Marvels, Iger did previously say that he felt the lack of supervision on the set (which was filmed during COVID) was a reason the movie didn’t do well. However, that doesn’t take into account that the movie premiered during a major entertainment strike where its leads were unable to promote it. Stay tuned to DFB for more Disney news! 9. There is some amazing entertainment at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. Maleficent in Festival of Fantasy You’ve got Mickey’s Magical Friendship Fare in front of the castle. You’ve got the Dapper Dans (okay, like do you also get serious goosebumps every time you hear them sing?), you’ve got the INCREDIBLE Festival of Fantasy parade that includes a fire-breathing Maleficent dragon — but did you know that Maleficent doesn’t ALWAYS breathe fire along the parade route? Maleficent only breathes fire in very specific locations. We’ve got your back, though! Thanks to a very kind Cast Member/Tour Guide whom we consulted yesterday (because we’ve been wondering about this for, like, years), we’ve got a complete guide to where you need to be along the Festival of Fantasy parade route to make sure you catch all that fantastic fire breathing (and it really is quite the spectacle). You might even wonder why Maleficent doesn’t breathe fire throughout the whole parade route! Fire-breathing dragon Well, in some instances, it would be dangerous (’cause, you know, FIRE). For example, you’ve got the iconic, real life Liberty Tree in Liberty Square that Walt picked out himself. That tree is over 100 years old. So you won’t see ANY fire if you catch the parade in that area. But there are other areas where Maleficent won’t breathe fire, too. Thanks to this incredible Cast Member, we have a map of the parade route with spots where fire is not allowed — look for the little faces on the map below. Sad faces = no fire. Magic Kingdom map You’ll also notice that Maleficent will not breathe fire at the start of the parade route in Frontierland near Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. She starts breathing fire around where Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe is, then stops when she arrives in Liberty Square, and then starts again after she crosses the bridge leading to Cinderella Castle. So if seeing Maleficent doing her thing is on your priority list, make a note! It is certainly a sight to see, so we highly recommend it. Maleficent dragon on Main Street, U.S.A. 11. Disney has $60 billion burning a hole in their pocket. Sleeping Beauty Castle Back in September, Disney announced they would be spending $60 billion on park expansions in the next ten years (double the $30 billion they’ve spent in the past 10 years on the parks). But what exactly can we expect from these expansions? Josh D’Amaro, Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products Chairman, gave us a little hint at a recent interview. Disney CEO Bob Iger and other Disney executives held a town hall meeting on November 28th to share insight with the company’s employees. During this meeting, the question of park expansions and the $60 billion came up. D’Amaro remarked, “We’ve got so much space to play with. Disneyland, for example, Walt’s original theme park, we still have enough room to build another Disneyland there if we choose to do that.” Chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Josh D’Amaro Disney had mentioned that most of the $60 billion would be used to “expand and enhance domestic and international parks and cruise line capacity, prioritizing projects anticipated to generate strong returns, consistent with the company’s continuing approach to allocate capital in a disciplined and balanced manner.” And if Disney gets approval, the expansion in Disneyland could happen sooner rather than later. Holidays in Disneyland Disney has been in the process of creating DisneylandForward. If the city of Anaheim approves the DisneylandForward project, Walt’s original theme park would see some updating and renovations. New shops, attractions, and restaurants would be added to the Disneyland Resort. This project would give Disney the ability to do more within its nearly 500-acre space by taking away the zoning restrictions currently in place. DisneylandForward Expansion Map 1©Disney There has been talk of bringing Frozen, Black Panther, Coco, and Avatar to Disneyland through expansions and/or attractions, though nothing has been confirmed at this point. “Frozen, one of the most successful and popular animated franchises of all time, could have a presence at the Disneyland Resort. Wakanda has yet to be brought to life. The world of Coco is just waiting to be explored. There’s a lot of storytelling opportunity,” remarked D’Amaro. World of Frozen in Hong Kong Disneyland Disney hasn’t given us a price tag for DisneylandForward yet, but they hope the project will be approved by Anaheim in 2024. 12. Y’all THE TIME HAS COME! Now we don’t have to choose!! If you hate crunching-in-your-ear as much as a LOT of us do, Doritos has just done THE MOST. (Bow down to the tortilla chip gods.) They’ve partnered with a tech developer to find a SOLUTION, especially for gamers everywhere. Crunching while you’re gaming or on a Zoom call should be illegal. Sadly, it’s not. But, according to the Washington Post on Instagram, Doritos (which were invented in Disneyland! Keep reading to learn more.) has now solved this problem. ©The Washington Post Doritos has created Doritos Silent– a chip-chomping silencing software that works with your PC. It removes the sound of your crunching while using a headset. It can be used with Zoom calls or anything that can use headphones. However, it was really created with gamers in mind. (Also did they really put a chip in that person’s ear for this picture or is that photoshopped?) Do not put chips in your ear ©Doritos Dylan Fashbaugh, lead developer at Smooth Technology, which worked with Doritos to create this new, free app said, “It works on anything that accepts a microphone.” You’ll be able to snack away, crunching loudly (again, should be illegal, but nobody listens to us), and no one will hear or be annoyed by the sounds in their ear. The app launched early in November and can currently be used with any PC. It will likely expand to other devices in the future. PRAISE CHEEZITS! Sleeping Beauty Castle Now, for a brief history lesson that ties this ALL into Disney (even though we’re perfectly happy to spread the word about this app for the good of all mankind, we’re also always ready to tie it back to Disney): DID YOU KNOW Doritos were actually invented in Disneyland! Rumor has it that a salesman from a local vendor, Alex’s Food, saw someone throwing away stale tortillas. He suggested to the chef of Casa de Fritos (RIP) that they fry them up to make chips to sell. The snacks turned out to be very popular which led to a Frito-Lay marketing executive working on commercializing them, giving us the chips we all love today! 13. Who doesn’t love a character meet and greet? Hey, Pluto! Whether you’re meeting characters because your kids want to or because you want to (adults ARE allowed to enjoy meeting characters on their own– we promise), it is bound to be a magical moment. This year, we have been BLESSED with some new characters at Walt Disney World, and with the year coming to a close, we want to talk about all of the NEW characters we got in 2023. We have seen so many new faces this year at Disney World. It always feels so surreal when we meet characters we know and love, but there truly is something special about meeting a character for the first time. We’ve had the opportunity to do that quite a few times this year! Chip ‘n Dale is Tomorrowland We finally got to meet characters from some newer movies that we had been (im)patiently waiting to see in the parks– Mirabel and Moana. We have been waiting to see these two since their movies were released, and our dream finally came true. Mirabel in Disney World You can find Mirabel in the Casita at Magic Kingdom. You’ll find so many amazing details at this meet and greet location– like the Madrigal’s magical doors, portraits, and more. She is one of the sweetest characters and isn’t one you want to miss! While we’re talking about some of our favorite characters from Encanto, we can’t forget about Bruno— and you don’t even need to go far to find him! You can see Bruno in the Adventure Friends Cavalcade. Bruno! Moana spends her time at her newest walk-through attraction– Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana at EPCOT. Both the attraction and the meet and greet opened recently. Not only do you get beautiful views, but you get to meet such a lovable character which is such a big plus. We have been able to meet Moana in Animal Kingdom for awhile now, but it is exciting to be able to meet her at her very own attraction now! I am Moanaaaaaaa We’re staying at EPCOT for this one because we are officially able to meet FIGMENT. You’re not sure who Figment is? Well, he has two tiny wings, eyes big and yellow, horns of a steer, but a lovable fellow. From head to tail, he’s royal purple pigment, and there, voila, you’ve got a Figment! Did that help jog your memory? Good! You can meet Figment at ImageWorks at the exit of the Journey into Imagination ride. Figment Meet and Greet Oh, we’re still at EPCOT. They have given us so many new characters this year– so it makes sense. One of the newest meet and greets at the parks is Asha, from Disney’s newest movie Wish! She is meeting at the World Showcase Friendship Ambassador Gazebo. She was super sweet and we loved being able to meet her– even before seeing her movie! Asha from the new movie ‘Wish’ Time to head over to Hollywood Studios, where we can meet the live action Ariel from the newest release of The Little Mermaid! You can find her in Walt Disney Presents. She is wearing a stunning blue dress and is one of the most bubbly characters we’ve ever met. Live Action Ariel So… we went back to EPCOT. Sorry, we can’t help it! It is where most of the action was this year when it comes to characters. Here, you can meet Mickey and Minnie in their platinum outfits to celebrate Disney’s 100 years of wonder! You get a 2-for-1 special here since both of them are here to meet you! You can find them near the Imagination Pavilion. Mickey and Minnie in their 100th anniversary outfits! Sometimes, Disney brings out some fun or exclusive characters for their after-hour parties like Jollywood Nights. So, we figured they deserve some love here as honorable mentions! Jollywood Nights You can find Phineas and Ferb, Powerline Max, and Duffy the Disney Bear at Hollywood Studios Jollywood Nights as some exclusive meet and greet characters. Don’t forget your autograph books– meeting them could be a once in a lifetime opportunity! Powerline Max When you’re planning when to find your faves, make sure you’re checking the My Disney Experience app so you can see what times they’re meeting. Make sure you have your autograph book out and ready for them to sign, too! It helps you maximize the amount of time you have talking with them! It’s Phineas and Ferb! We’re keeping our eyes out for characters coming in 2024, and we will be sure to update you when we get some good news. Keep checking in with us at DFB for those fun updates! 15. We absolutely love the holiday season at the Disneyland Resort and look forward to the festivities every year! Sleeping Beauty Castle From the Festival of Holidays at Disney California Adventure to all the holiday decorations, ride overlays, and seasonal shows at Disneyland, Disneyland Resort is the place to be during the holiday season. The festivities at the Disneyland Resort got even more special this year with the return of Disneyland’s Candlelight Processional! We were lucky to be in attendance for the first performance of this year’s Candlelight Processional and we are so excited to tell you all about it! Lots of people were already there when we showed up HOURS early! This special event features a 600-member choir accompanying a celebrity narrator in the retelling of the story of Christmas in front of the Disneyland Railroad Main Street, U.S.A. station at the front of the park. Disney doesn’t really promote the event because its existing popularity ALREADY causes traffic problems within the park and the only reserved seating is limited to special guests, including VIP members of the community, media members, civic leaders, and other select VIPs. Be prepared to wait. With that said, you can still catch the show in the limited standing-room-only spot behind the seating area without the need for a special ticket. However, our show was PACKED and you should be ready to reserve your spot HOURS before the event. Be advised that you should be prepared to wait and stick it out in your spot. Check out the trumpeters! And, Brie Larson is the surprise celebrity narrator for this evening! She read the Christmas story between the choir’s songs, joining the likes of Viola Davis, Henry Fonda, Ginnifer Goodwin, Cary Grant, Chris Hemsworth, Charlton Heston, James Earl Jones, Gregory Peck, Jane Seymour, Jimmy Stewart, Van Dyke, and John Wayne. Brie Larson! This year’s Candlelight Processional will take place on December 2nd and 3rd with performances at 5:30PM and 7:45PM each night. The tradition essentially began when Disneyland opened in 1955 and has evolved into a much bigger spectacle over the decades. Now, it’s such a Disney staple that it even has a very popular version in Disney World’s EPCOT! At Disneyland, the limited performances in conjunction with the event’s popularity have made this a very tough ticket and will continue to be something to circle on your Disney calendar every year. So cool! We’ll continue to keep you posted on all the latest Disneyland holiday updates, as well as all the latest Disney news so stay tuned right here at DFB! 16. Watch out! At least eight attractions and restaurants are going to be CLOSED in Disney World next week. Cinderella Castle Some of these closures have been affecting the parks and hotels for a LONG time (we’re talking multiple years), and others are much more recent. Let’s check out all of the temporary closures in Disney World from December 3rd through the 9th so that you’re prepared before your next trip. Magic Kingdom Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Splash Mountain closed on January 23rd for a long refurbishment. The ride is being re-themed to become Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, with a Princess and the Frog theme. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Concept Art ©Disney The new ride will reopen sometime in late 2024. We’ll be watching for more updates on the reopening timeline. The tree at the top of this ride has been removed as Disney continues construction, and several new rock structures have been built at the bottom of the drop. The queue area is being redone, and we recently saw some concrete added to this space. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Construction There’s a new water tower as well, which says “Tiana’s Foods” on the front and “Never, ever lose sight of what’s really important” on the back. It’s topped with Tiana’s crown, which has two stars on it to represent Ray and Evangeline. In addition, Cast Members are currently working on a large mural that’s painted on the side of the queue building. Queue and mural construction If you miss Splash Mountain or want to celebrate the new ride, you should check out our DFB t-shirts! We have a Splash Mountain Farwell Tour shirt… DFB Exclusive! …and a Tiana tee as well! Check out our new Tiana-inspired merch! You can shop both tees (and lots of other Disney merch) at our online store. Click here to shop our DFB merchandise store. Barrel Bridge on Tom Sawyer’s Island The Barrel Bridge on Tom Sawyer’s Island is not only closed — it’s missing completely! Barrel Bridge is missing A Cast Member told us a few months ago that it was removed for repairs, and we haven’t seen it back since. We’ll be keeping an eye out for its return. Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant Tomorrowland Terrace is a quick service restaurant that’s remained closed since the 2020 pandemic-related closures, but even before that, this spot was only occasionally open. Tomorrowland Terrace It’s been a LONG time since we’ve seen this restaurant open for visitors. Pretty much the only thing it’s used for now is the Magic Kingdom Fireworks Dessert Parties. We saw it open in late 2020, when it was serving some favorites from Columbia Harbour House‘s menu while that restaurant was temporarily closed. Tomorrowland Terrace Once in a while, you’ll see the dining area open as a rest area, but usually it’s all roped off and empty. Disney hasn’t announced when this spot could finally reopen, but we’ll be watching for updates! These Are the BEST Magic Kingdom Restaurants Disney’s Hollywood Studios Voyage of the Little Mermaid Voyage of the Little Mermaid is a stage show located in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It closed with the rest of the parks in 2020 for the pandemic-related shut-down, but even after the parks reopened and the rest of the entertainment slowly returned as well, this attraction remained closed. Still closed Disney hasn’t announced when or if the Voyage of the Little Mermaid will reopen. However, we have some hope for the show. Disney released this new pin in March 2022 celebrating the 30th anniversary of the attraction, which seems like something they wouldn’t do if they were going to close the show for good. Although we haven’t heard anything definitive about Voyage of the Little Mermaid, we have hope that it could reopen sometime in the future! We’ll be sure to let you know about any updates A Definitive Ranking of EVERY Fast Food Restaurant in Hollywood Studios EPCOT Restaurant Marrakesh Almost all of the restaurants that were closed in EPCOT during the 2020 park closure have reopened, but Restaurant Marrakesh in the Morocco Pavilion is still closed with no word on when it will reopen. Restaurant Marrakesh building Since closing, the empty restaurant has been used as a relaxation station, a lounge…pretty much everything but dining. Recently, we saw that the hedges that were previously in front of the entrance have been removed and the space is once again open as a lounge. We’re hoping the restaurant returns soon! The Land Cart The Land Cart in the Land pavilion of EPCOT is currently closed as well. The Land Cart Disney’s website shows that this cart will be closed through mid-January at least. Top 3 Table Service Restaurants in EPCOT Disney World Hotels 1900 Park Fare at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort At Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, 1900 Park Fare is a table service restaurant where you could meet characters like Mary Poppins and Alice in Wonderland at their Supercalifragilistic Breakfast and Cinderella and her Prince Charming during the Cinderella’s Happily Ever After Dinner. 1900 Park Fare They also had a special event for younger children called the Wonderland Tea Party. It’s sad to see a spot closed that had so much character interaction! Disney hasn’t announced a permanent closure, so there is hope for 1900 Park Fare. With 1900 Park Fare closed…you’ll need this SECRET spot to get afternoon tea in Disney World! 17. In Disney World, the holidays are all around us: from the decorations in the parks to the EPCOT Festival of the Holidays to the food. Grand Floridian Christmas Tree Okay, so the best part — at least for us — is THE FOOD. Like, that shouldn’t come as a surprise, right? We found out about some new holiday snacks at two of Disney World’s Monorail resorts, which means we made a BEELINE over to those hotels to try them. Our first stop was at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, where we took a moment to admire the giant gingerbread house again before heading to Gasparilla Island Grill to try two new holiday treats there. The first is a Present Peppermint Brownie Pop for $5.99, which is a Brownie filled with House-made Peppermint Patty enrobed in White Chocolate on a stick. All wrapped up like a present First, we were surprised at how big the pop is. The brownie is nice and thick but soft. We will warn you, though, that the peppermint flavor is very strong, but it does have a peppermint patty inside. We liked the crunch added by the white chocolate coating. It’s pretty big, too We’ll give you a little head’s up, though: don’t eat that bow. It’s like gum paste or fondant, and it’s chewy…and weird. The chocolate is also SUPER messy and WILL stain your hands VERY red, making it look like you just left a crime scene. We also thought the peppermint flavor overpowered the chocolate. Inside We also got the Snowman Choux for $6.99, and yes, that’s “choux” as in something you hear a lot on The Great British Baking Show. It’s a Pâte à Choux filled with Spiced Mousse and Chocolate Bavarian Cream. We’re happy to report that this choux would 100% get a Paul Hollywood handshake. It’s fluffy and chewy with a nice crispiness around the edges. Also, just LOOK AT IT. It’s a work of art. It’s SO PERFECT The snowman’s head is filled with mousse, while the bottom has the cream. The mousse had a spiced eggnog or gingerbread flavor to it, but it still was light and delicate. The Bavarian cream in the bottom was richer, but very fluffy, and we’ll admit we liked it even more than the mousse. The scarf is that gummy chewy fondant stuff, so skip that, but otherwise, we’d get this again. We want to make the Grand Floridian chef who created this Star Baker this week. Great choux Well, things got a little iffier when we headed over to Disney’s Contemporary Resort to try the Holiday Cranberry Frangipane Cake for $6.49 at Contempo Cafe. It’s made with Almond Frangipane with Cranberry-Cherry Gel, White Chocolate Mousse, and Salted Honey Whip. We will say that we thought the frangipane and the fluffy cake were delicious with a subtle almond flavoring. The Frangipane and cake are good However, the toppings on this thing were OFF. That light almond flavor gets overpowered by the strong, tart cranberry. The salted honey whip is TOO salty and just throws the whole thing off. This dessert needed to be more light and mild, and would’ve worked way better without the heavy flavors of the topping. The toppings did NOT work So we guess 2 out of 3 aren’t bad, but if we had to choose just one, we’d go with that Snowman Choux. If you’re visiting Disney World this holiday season, it’s definitely worth the trek over to the Grand Floridian to try it. Stay tuned to DFB for more reviews. Hollywood Studios Disney World is celebrating BIG for the holidays this year with the return of the EPCOT Festival of the Holidays and the all-new Jollywood Nights event. With all of these exciting things come lots of crowds! That is apparent through the wait times too, although we were a bit surprised at what is going on at Disney’s Hollywood Studios right now… The wait times are trending DOWN. Not just a little bit, but there were some huge decreases this week at popular attractions like Slinky Dog Dash and Rise of the Resistance! Check out the full details on those average wait times and the rest of the parks below. Magic Kingdom Starting in Magic Kingdom, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train had the longest average wait time of 67 minutes. Big Thunder After that, “it’s a small world” averaged 18 minutes, Barnstormer featuring the Great Goofini, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Mickey’s PhilharMagic, and Tomorrowland Speedway averaged 15 minutes, Magic Carpets of Aladdin averaged 14 minutes, Mad Tea Party and Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover averaged 11 minutes, and Enchanted Tiki Room averaged 10 minutes. Magic Carpets Prince Charming Regal Carrousel also averaged 10 minutes and other attractions like Hall of Presidents, Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse, Carousel of Progress, and Liberty Square Riverboat all tied at 5-minute average wait times. Pirates of the Caribbean The Country Bear Jamboree and Tom Sawyer Island were walk-ons this week. 2 Big Problems Fans Have With the Haunted Mansion in Magic Kingdom EPCOT Heading over to EPCOT, Frozen Ever After took the top spot for highest average wait time with 59 minutes. This is a decrease from last week’s 76-minute average. Then, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure had and average wait time of 57 minutes, which has also decreased. 23. There are many airlines to choose from when booking vacation flights. ©Breeze Airways Breeze Airways is one airline company that has more recently thrown its name into the large options of airlines. It was launched in 2021 with the purpose of serving U.S. cities that did not receive service from larger companies. Now, the low-cost airline is expanding its horizons. Breeze Airways is looking to expand to international destinations such as parts of Europe. According to Reuters, more airlines are seeking international routes which have higher yields. Turns out Breeze Airways is also looking to take advantage of “peak season” travel to places like Ireland. ©️Orlando International Airport Currently, the company is awaiting flag carrier approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Breeze just recently began service from Plattsburgh, New York where many travelers from Montreal, Canada look for flight options. The carrier is also taking advantage of locations where other airlines are cutting service, such as in Burlington, Vermont where JetBlue Airways Corp is cutting service and Breeze is starting in January. @JetBlue Airways Breeze Airways is ready to take advantage of other companies’ losses and cuts. “These pockets of pain that are being created, because either there is no air service there, it’s gone away completely, or it’s just regional planes going to hubs, has created hundreds and hundreds of market opportunities for us,” said Chief Executive David Neeleman. Breeze will be an airline company to watch out for in the future. Until then, keep following DFB for more travel news! 25. The Walt Disney Company has been in multiple headlines this week. Disney World From fan sites to national news outlets, we saw “Disney” and “Bob Iger” as key words in multiple news stories this week. There’s a LOT going on, and it’s easy to get lost in the whirlwind of news and social media comments. So, we’re here to break it all down for you. Here are three times that Disney took over the news this week. Bob Iger Confirms 2026 Exit We were a bit shocked in November 2022 when Bob Chapek stepped down as Disney CEO and Bob Iger stepped out of retirement to once again take on the position. We knew that Iger would’t be around as CEO forever, and that his leadership would only last a few years, but this week, Iger confirmed that he would step down from the CEO position in 2026. ©Disney He said that the process of succession is currently “robust.” Florida Senator Prepared Bill That Could Dismantle DeSantis’s Appointed Board Governor DeSantis is no stranger to news headlines, either, as he enacted a law that allowed him to take control over Disney’s special taxing district and appoint a brand new oversight board: The Central Florida Tourism Oversight Board. Reedy Creek Improvement District Now, Florida Sen. Linda Stewart is preparing to file a bill that could TERMINATE the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District… as it existed before February 23rd, 2023, when DeSantis’s board officially took over. This would end the Central Florida Tourism Oversight Board as we know it as of the act’s effective date, if approved. A walk-out over committee rules derailed a vote to move the bill forward this week. Another attempt at a vote is expected next week. Iger Yanks Ads From X (Formerly Twitter) X CEO Elon Musk outraged media giants this week as he made an anti-semitic comment in response to a post made by another user on the platform. Disney, along with numerous other brands like Comcast/NBC Universal, Paramount Global, Warner Bros. Discovery, Apple, and Lionsgate pulled their ads from the platform. ©Getty Images via The Hollywood Reporter Later, Musk responded to Iger specifically (using lots of F-bombs), and stated that these companies were killing the brand by boycotting advertisements on the site. Whew! Of course, there was a lot more that happened this week, not just in the news, but in the parks. You can see what happened in the parks and hotels by clicking through the links below: WHAT'S NEW AT DISNEY? Check out our daily updates on all the happenings around Disney World and Disneyland!
