It’s been incredible to see the guest experience transform here over the past four years since we first launched My Disney Experience in 2013. From the FastPass+ service to MagicBand 2 and Mobile Order, we’re always exploring new opportunities to make a Walt Disney World Resort vacation even more convenient and more magical. If you’re lucky enough to have tasted the new gourmet donuts on Main Street, U.S.A., at Disneyland park, then you may have noticed the confectionary creativity is endless. You might even describe them as pure deliciousness! (Is that even a word???) Nonetheless, guests are lovin’ the donuts so much, we thought we’d ask Executive Chef Jason Martin about his inspiration for large variety of flavors. How many flavors of donuts are sold at the cart on Main Street, U.S.A., each day? There are, usually, three flavors of donuts to choose from daily. There’s just no limit to what we will put on a donut! So far, we’ve introduced 40 different flavor combos. How do you get inspiration for new flavors? What’s the creation process like? We’re always looking for what’s hot, what’s new, what’s trending. The ideas can be related to people, parades, events and seasons. I ask members of my team for ideas and inspiration — and invite anyone who has an idea to make suggestions. What’s the most extravagant over-the-top flavor you’ve created? I’d say, the Matterhorn Macaroon donut or the Chocolate Covered Potato Chip donut. How often do flavors change or rotate? Every Friday, we introduce the new donut flavors. Summer days at Walt Disney World Resort are beautifully sunny but they can also be filled with humidity and lots of rain! Here are some consejos to make your vacation ‘rain’ proof! The first thing is to have a rain plan that includes enjoying indoor attractions and shows. These are my favorites: “it’s a small world,” Pirates of the Caribbean, Mickey’s PhilharMagic at Magic Kingdom Park; Soarin’, The Seas with Nemo & Friends, World Showcase Pavilions at Epcot; Star Wars Launch Bay, Star Tours, Toy Story Mania at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and the amazing shows “The Festival of the Lion King” and “Finding Nemo – The Musical” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Second, you and your familia need to pack clothing that is appropriate for all type of weather. It’s hot and humid so you need clothes that are light but also that can dry easily. You also need comfortable shoes and socks! Brings extra pairs of socks because your feet will be the first thing to get soaked during a summer downpour. Wet socks are not fun! Also be sure to pack rain jackets or ponchos and bring umbrellas. If you forgot them, you can always buy them at the stores in the resorts and the parks. And last but not least, my favorite thing to do, rain or shine, is to find the character greeting locations – in this case, the indoor ones! – and take photos and ask for autographs where they are allowed. With the return of the Disneyland Railroad on Saturday, July 29, guests will once again embark on the classic grand circle tour of Walt Disney’s original Magic Kingdom. Earlier this week, we looked back at the history of the Rivers of America, also reopening July 29, so today let’s take a look at the Disneyland Railroad through its more than 60 years of travel. The Disneyland Railroad was one of our opening-day attractions on July 17, 1955, with two steam engines in operation. Engine No. 1 – C.K. Holliday – was named for Cyrus Kurtz Holliday, founder of the Atchison & Topeka Railroad (later the Santa Fe Railroad, established in 1859). The locomotive was built by WED Enterprises (now Walt Disney Imagineering) in Burbank, Calif., from a design inspired by Walt Disney’s model train engine, the Lilly Belle – centerpiece of his backyard railroad, the Carolwood Pacific. C.K.’s fellow opening-day steam engine, No. 2 – E.P. Ripley – was named for Edward Payson Ripley, who was the first president of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, and was also built by WED Enterprises. In 1958, the Disneyland Railroad expanded with its third – and in fact, oldest – steam engine. Engine No. 3 – Fred Gurley – was named after Fred G. Gurley, who was president of the Santa Fe Railway from 1944-1957. It is the oldest steam engine operating on the Disneyland Railroad, built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Penn., in 1894. It was first put into service in August 1895, and began circling the Happiest Place on Earth on March 28, 1958. Engine No. 4 – Ernest S. Marsh – was added the following year, on July 25, 1959, and was named for Ernest S. Marsh – who was the president of Santa Fe Railroad at the time. It was built in 1925 by Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Penn. – the same company that built its fellow Disneyland Railroad engine, the Fred Gurley. Nearly 50 years would pass before the fifth steam engine would join the Disneyland Railroad. Engine No. 5 – Ward Kimball – is unique among its fellow steam engines, as it was named not for an icon of the railroad, but for an icon of the Walt Disney Company. Ward Kimball was a Disney animator and one of Walt Disney’s “Nine Old Men”; among his many achievements was the creation of Jiminy Cricket. He was named a Disney Legend in 1989. Ward was a railroad enthusiast, whose passion for the hobby inspired Walt’s own love of trains and railroading. The Ward Kimball was put into service on the Disneyland Railroad on June 25, 2005, and dedicated on February 15, 2006, as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Disneyland. The Disneyland Railroad reopening this week will bring new and enhanced adventures to this classic experience. What? ANOTHER new Hollywood Studios main drag? Welcome GRAND AVENUE!! We have LOTS to look forward to at Hollywood Studios, with Toy Story Land opening in 2018 and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge (that’s the official name for Star Wars Land!) in 2019. But let’s face it… we’ve got some time to wait for those big, new adventures at the moment. Toy Story Land Construction Walls So it may be good to know that we have something new to look forward to much closer on the horizon: this fall, the new Grand Avenue area — celebrating “the spirit of present-day Downtown Los Angeles” — is coming to Hollywood Studios! The area (essentially what remains of the former Streets of America) will showcase vintage office buildings and warehouses in representation of different parts of LA. And the new BaseLine Tap House will be a big part of the scene! ©Disney Featuring ales, lagers, and cider from California (along with California wines on tap), BaseLine Tap House will be housed in a brick building that pays homage “to the building’s former life as the Figueroa Printing Company, a mom-and-pop print house that had ties to the Disney studios in nearby Burbank.” Look for vintage printing equipment and exposed walls to make up the atmosphere inside, while a shaded terrace will offer outdoor seating. Along with the California specialties listed above, cocktails and small bites will also round out the menu. Tapas will include a Bavarian pretzel with mustard and beer-cheese fondue, a charcuterie board with California cheeses, and spiced almonds… ©Disney … which, if you recall, sounds suspiciously like what Writer’s Stop served in its final days when it ran as a defacto lounge easily accessible for guests awaiting their Advance Dining Reservations at Sci-Fi Dine-In Restaurant. Writer’s Stop Lounge Menu in Final Days Does Hollywood Studios need another bar? Well, with Brown Derby Lounge, Tune-In Lounge, and pop-up bars all around the park, like, all the time…probably not. But currently that area of the park offers Mama Melrose and Sci-Fi Dine-In — both table service spots that really do require a reservation. While Pizzerizzo is back there, its menu is painfully limited, so if you’re visiting with an adult group or would prefer something other than bad pizza, it will be nice to have options in that area of the park. While an opening date has yet to be announced, we DO know the space will open at 11:00 am daily once in operation. So get ready to raise a glass — and enjoy a little bit of the west coast out east — on Grand Avenue when the BaseLine Tap House opens this fall! Debuting this fall, the new Grand Avenue area at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is being re-imagined by Walt Disney Imagineers to capture the spirit of present-day Downtown Los Angeles, showing vintage office buildings and warehouses representing the different vibrant districts and cultures of the city. One prominent hot spot to spring up is the Baseline Tap House, a cheerful corner pub specializing in beer and wines from California. In a quaint brick building, Baseline Tap House celebrates the revitalization of Downtown Los Angeles by paying homage to the building’s former life as the Figueroa Printing Company, a mom-and-pop print house that had ties to the Disney studios in nearby Burbank. The space retains many of its cool architectural and mechanical details with exposed walls and old printing equipment and artifacts, blending the past and present in an inviting space. Outside is a charming tree-shaded terrace, perfect for a relaxing break in the day. California craft ales, lagers and cider are the stars of the drink menu. California wines on tap along with specialty cocktails are not to be missed either. A gourmet non-alcoholic lemonade and soda on tap round out the drink selection. If you’re feeling peckish, try one of the small bites, including a Bavarian pretzel with mustard and beer-cheese fondue, spiced almonds or a charcuterie board featuring California cheeses. Boy, do I have a fun list for you today! Learn About: Mara Animal Kingdom Lodge Disney World Restaurants We’re taking on a few Must-Eat Snacks at The Mara in Animal Kingdom Lodge! This counter service restaurant serves up several classic dishes as you might expect (like Chicken Breast Nuggets and Burgers). But in keeping with the wonderfully immersive theming of the Lodge, you’ll also find unique African-inspired dishes like the tasty African Potjie Stew and Soups of the Day (I love it when the Coconut Curry Chicken Soup comes up on the rotation!). Even in addition to some of those items, though, there are still a few nearly-unique-to-Mara finds (you’ll see what I mean by that soon) that aren’t necessarily African-inspired, but equally as tasty. And those land on our Mara Must-Eat Snacks list! Plus, they are all available for a snack credit on the Disney Dining Plan! So let’s start with with a VERY special item that just made its Mara debut! Frozen Jungle Juice Oh, joy!! We feared we’d lost the Jungle Juice Slushy for good when it disappeared from the menu at Animal Kingdom’s Mahindi, but a few weeks ago it made a surprise return. Better yet, it’s now available in TWO spots, since it’s at The Mara now, too! The Mara Frozen Beverages Even though it’s called the Jungle Juice Frozen Beverage, it’s still that same awesome mix of Passion Fruit, Orange, and Guava juices that is also known as POG Juice or Liliko’i Juice for breakfast in the Polynesian’s ‘Ohana and Kona Cafe. Frozen Jungle Juice No matter where you grab it, it’s a must-try, but it makes its way on our Must-Eats at Mara list since FROZEN is my favorite way to enjoy it! Plus, that Mickey Straw is yours to keep for the $4.69 price tag of the drink. Frozen Jungle Juice dispenser That said, if you prefer it straight up , the non-frozen version that you can also have during breakfast at Boma is currently available in the morning until it runs out for the day. Peanut Butter Brownie I am SO GLAD that the Peanut Butter Brownie has remained at The Mara ever since it first showed up in the bakery case WAY back in 2013. Peanut Butter Brownie Because this thing seriously merits a special trip to The Mara all on its own. (And I have made many…many such trips.) Close-up of Peanut Butter Frosting This dense brownie topped with dense peanut butter frosting comes together to make one of my favorite sweet-and-salty snacks in all of Disney World. Peanut Butter Brownie My fellow PB lovers can’t miss it. Zebra Domes Now, if you’ve ever enjoyed dinner at Boma, you may already be familiar with Zebra Domes. But did you know they’re available at The Mara, too? Zebra Domes from The Mara You DO need to go on a small hunt to find them, but it’s not all that difficult. Zebra Domes are served chilled, so you won’t spot them in the bakery case next to that Peanut Butter Brownie. Instead, head to the refrigerator and scan the shelves until you spot ‘em! Zebra Domes Fair warning: believe it or not, not everyone loves the little domes of Amarula Cream Liquor Mousse topped with a light and fluffy layer of white chocolate all covering a thin base of cake. The moist texture and the pronounced flavor of the alcohol are not everyone’s cup of tea. Zebra Dome But I still say you gotta try them at least once and decide for yourself, because there is a reason Zebra Domes have stood the test of time at Animal Kingdom Lodge! So, there you have it! We’re continuing our exclusive series of Disney-inspired bento box tutorials with yet another design inspired by the Disney film “Moana.” This time, Disney Parks Blog reader and fan Mike Kravanis is at Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows – a Disney Vacation Club Resort – to show you how to wow your friends and family with a special Hei Hei bento box. To create a Hei Hei bento box, Mike started with a bed of blue rice made by cooking it in a butterfly pea flower tea and then added in a strip of pineapple filling. Hei Hei himself is made mostly out of raw vegetables, with green onions and carrots used to create his feathers. Check out the video for step-by-step instructions. Actor David Tennant stopped by Disneyland park recently to visit with Duckburg’s most famous trillionaire, Scrooge McDuck, who happened to be making a special visit to the Bank of Toontown. Visiting the Disneyland Resort with his family, David was most looking forward to riding the new Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! at Disney California Adventure park. When asked what he liked most about Scrooge McDuck, David said, “He’s got a hidden life. You think he’s a crotchety old windbag, when he’s actually Indiana Jones with a beak!” You can hear David in the new animated comedy adventure series “DuckTales,” premiering August 12 on Disney XD.
