The heat of summer in central Florida is quickly approaching (believe it or not!), and we’ve found an icy drink in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom that is guaranteed to give you the chills. The Desert Pear Lemonade Slushy is sweet, tart, and totally refreshing. And you’ll find it at Golden Oak Outpost, current home of Chicken Nuggets and former home of Sweet Potato Nuggets! Golden Oak Outpost Golden Oak Outpost is perfectly situated along the path between Adventureland and Frontierland (the Walt Disney World Railroad runs behind it on its way to Frontierland), so the slushy is a terrific treat to grab en route to the queue for Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, or Pirates of the Caribbean. Or just hang out in the small outdoor seating area (but note that this is right next to a smoking area, so if this will bother you, head across the way to the Pecos Bill’s seating area). When Toy Story Land opens, guests will “shrink” to the size of a toy and join in on the fun Woody, Jessie, Buzz, and the rest of the gang are having in Andy’s backyard – but what exactly does that look like? We’ve assembled a gallery of every image we’ve shared so far on this amazing new land. Click through and take a look at what you can expect when the land debuts June 30, 2018! Gallery Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios view all As you can see in the image gallery above, the entire land will serve as a visual celebration of toys, with Crayons, Cooties, Green Army Men, Rubik’s Cubes, Tinkertoys, and other familiar toys and game pieces incorporated into the land’s design. Once inside Toy Story Land, guests will be able to take a ride on Slinky Dog Dash, a roller coaster Andy has assembled from his Mega Coaster Play Kit, or take a spin on Alien Swirling Saucers, a galactic play set that Andy won at Pizza Planet. Guests can also walk through a new carnival game box to experience Toy Story Mania!, which has been a guest-favorite attraction at the park since it opened in 2008. Now expanded with a third track, the popular attraction will allow even more guests to take aim at 3D objects – using everything from baseballs to cream pies – in a variety of whimsical, fast-paced games. Guests sailing on the Disney Magic cruise ship are now experiencing a brand new restaurant: Rapunzel’s Royal Table is now welcoming guests to the Kingdom of Corona… by way of the sea! Similar to Tiana’s Place on the Magic’s counterpart — the Disney Wonder — Rapunzel’s Royal Table delivers a themed menu, live entertainment, and Disney characters to guests… all set inside a ballroom in the royal castle! Today is #NationalPotatoChip day and we’re sharing some sweet and savory chip recipes that were inspired by favorite Walt Disney World attractions. These tasty snacks are a fun way to satisfy your theme park cravings in between visits! Celebrate National Potato Chip Day by adding a little Disney into the mix with the recipes below: Fantasmic Flickering Flame 3 cups of chips 1 tbsp white sugar ½ tsp chili powder ½ tsp ground red pepper Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl Warm chips in oven at 350 F for 5 minutes Toss chips with curry mix Soarin’ Curry Crunch 3 cups potato chips 1 tbsp curry 1 tbsp coconut sugar ⅛ tsp cinnamon ⅛ tsp ginger powder Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl Warm chips in oven at 350 F for 5 minutes Toss chips with curry mix Space Mountain Galactic Bites 2 purple sweet potatoes 1 tbsp olive oil ½ tsp salt Chocolate candy melts Silver star sprinkles Raspberry popping candy Preheat oven to 400 F Cut sweet potatoes into thin, ⅛” slices Place in bowl and toss with olive oil and 1 tsp salt Lay on greased baking sheet Cook for 25 minutes, flipping once halfway through Melt candy melts according to instructions on package Place melted chocolate in a plastic sandwich bag, and push into corner, then twister the remainder of the plastic, creating a small piping bag Use scissors to snip a tiny bit of the corner of the bag off Drizzle chocolate onto chips, making lines back and forth Immediately sprinkle with silver stars and raspberry popping candy Observe this day by recreating one of these recipes to enjoy and post your creation on social media. Effective for reservations starting March 21, 2018, registered guests at Disney World Resort hotels will be charged a nightly fee for self-parking. Disney’s Wilderness Lodge The parking fee will be added to the guest’s hotel folio upon checkout. Rates will vary based on Resort type, as follows: Value Resorts: $13 per night Moderate Resorts: $19 per night Deluxe Resorts: $24 per night Tax is included for all prices above. Complimentary standard parking is included for guests staying at the Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort, with space for one motorized vehicle. Additionally, valet parking will increase to $33 per night at Deluxe Resorts and Villas. Disney Vacation Club Members won’t be charged for overnight self-parking when staying at a DVC Deluxe Villa (regardless of whether or not they use vacation points to reserve their stay). Nor will members be charged when using vacation points to stay at a Disney Resort hotel. Now, how will this change affect guests hoping to dine, shop, or enjoy entertainment or recreation at a Disney Resort? At this time, “Day Guests” (those not staying overnight at the Resort) will still be able to self-park without a fee (space permitting, presumably). Earlier this month, we shared the exciting details of Incredible Summer – a host of new offerings that will bring beloved Disney stories to life at all four Walt Disney World Resort theme parks this summer. Today, we’re happy to share that Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon will also join in on the fun with new Disney H20 Glow Nights! As part of Incredible Summer, “Toy Story” pals will throw glow parties at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park, inspired by the awesome party in the Pixar short, “Partysaurus Rex” (check out a clip of the short below). On select summer nights starting June 21, special lighting effects will transform the water park like never before as Buzz, Woody and Jessie throw a Beach Party inspired by their friend, “Partysaurus” Rex. Come join the fun, dance on the beach, play party games, and meet up with Buzz, Woody and Jessie, plus, all attractions are open for guest enjoyment. Over the weekend, guests at the Palais Garnier opera house in Paris were treated to a first glimpse at the Pirates & Princesses Festival, which begins March 31 as part of the resort’s 25th Anniversary celebration. The evening included a sneak peek of the bright costumes and fun choreography guests will see in the park in just a few weeks. Among those in attendance were Miss France 2018 Maëva Coucke and Argentine French actress Bérénice Bejo (“The Artist”), as well as dozens of beloved Disney characters – and a few rapscallions. Soon guests at Disneyland Paris will have the chance to join in the interactive show “Disney Pirate or Princess: Make Your Choice!” which offers a different story depending on the team they choose. The two worlds will also come together daily as the Disney Princesses float and the Pirates float meet for a musical celebration in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle. When Disneyland Splitsville Luxury Lanes opened in Downtown Disney in California, guests were elated. The long-awaited bowling-alley-with-eats was finally open — and it did not disappoint! Enter: Disneyland Splitsville Luxury Lanes! Like its Floridian counterpart, Disneyland Splitsville captured the spirit of its locale, which greets guests with this awesome mural! Greetings from Disneyland Splitsville Luxury Lanes! And the love for the O.C. continues with this lane-side mural that depicts local icons. Splitsville in Orange County! Of course, Disneyland Splitsville has the classic Mickey Mouse Bowling Balls! I love how colorful these are! It’s not Splitsville without Mickey Bowling Balls! The lanes are impeccable. It’s clear fun will be had by all! Lanes are impeccable! Lanes are equipped with these touchscreens. Time to bowl? Lanes are equipped with touchscreens. Nope — time to eat! Disneyland Splitsville has loads of seating for guests dining here. There are tables with chairs (in a sort of mid-century style) as well as booths. And this second-floor dining area provides awesome views of Downtown Disney, too! Plenty of seating at Disneyland Splitsville! There are also sleek banquets with padded seats and high backs. Banquet seating at Splitsville. There are also rad bowling lounges for parties seeking to reserve semi-private lanes, which the Splitsville folks say provide a VIP-like experience for guests. Bowling Lounge this way! On this visit, Heather (@DininginDisney) and I were with a party of twenty-three celebrating in one of the semi-private areas, which consisted of four lanes and lots of seating. The decor in this space was subtle with splashes of color. Semi-Private Lanes for Parties Splitsville also offers these awesome pin bottles that you can order and refill! Even with ICEES! Fun Bowling Pin Bottles and Gift Bags They’re a fun souvenir! Splitsville Bottles Disneyland Splitsville offers tons of food and drink options, and whatever you think about bowling alley food — you might have to adjust your stereotype here. Splitsvilles in Orlando and now in Anaheim are actually pretty well known for their food. The drink menu offers Cocktails on Tap, Bowl Drinks, Hand-Crafted Spirits, Draft and Bottled Beer, and Wine. Drinks, Cocktails, and Spirits! I ordered a Muleshine, which comes served in a copper Moscow Mule cup, packed with ice. The tasty combo of components includes American Born Moonshine, fresh Peach Purée, Lime Juice, and a splash of premium Ginger Beer. It was refreshing, and the peach puree was an awesome addition. Muleshine The party ordered from the apps, pizza, and sushi menus — but you’ve gotta see what else they offer here! Apps, Pizza, and Sushi! Handhelds include a variety of burgers and sandwiches, while entrees have something for everyone — literally. There’s no way anyone could leave Splitsville hungry! Handhelds, Entrees, and Salads The dessert menu is small but powerful, with Ghirardelli Brownies, Root Beer Floats, and a Giant Cake. (Let’s just agree that all cake should be giant.) Desserts and Kids’ Menu But let’s get to the food! The apps menu is just packed with options — and between the many people in our party, we covered a lot of ground. Spicy Edamame was a big hit! Steamed edamame are tossed with Sesame Oil and Chili Sauce. Spicy Edamame! Loaded Fries are truly loaded here: Fries smothered in Queso Blanco, Bacon, Ranch, and Scallions. Like, seriously: queso and ranch? It was CRAZY incredible. Loaded Fries Once you go Splitsville Loaded Fries, you never go back. (Look at that bacon!) Loaded Fries! For something a little less, you know, awesome, there are typical crinkles in the Cone of Fries. We got these for my four-year-old, and he loved them. These are lightly seasoned and come with chive dip. Cone of Fries Chicken Tenders are a little next level, hand-battered with Parmesan breading then fried and served with ranch dressing. Totally yummy. Chicken Tenders And there are a lot of tenders here! Definitely shareable. Parmesan Breading on Chicken Tenders You almost have to order the next item for the name alone: Thigh High Sliders. These are two crispy Chicken Thigh Sliders tossed in Asian Barbecue Sauce and topped with Slaw. They could use a little more slaw — but the chicken was sweet and flavorful, and really juicy. Thigh High Sliders Cheeseburger Sliders are three Slider-style Burgers topped with Cheese, Caramelized Onions, Special Sauce, Lettuce, Tomato, and Pickles. There’s nothing too crazy going on here, but they’re a solid option. Cheeseburger Sliders There are ten varieties of pizza, but our party opted for Cheese. Love the dark, toasty cheese. Cheese Pizza And the chef-inspired menu at Splitsville also includes fantastic sushi options! Lots of Sushi options at Splitsville! The California Roll is a traditional creation of Sushi Rice, Kani Kama Krab, Cucumber, and Avocado. California Roll But California Crunch is a spectacle! It’s Tempura Fried Kani Kama Krab, Cucumber and Avocado topped with Tempura crunch, Spicy Mayo and Kimchi Ponzu. The presentation is wild! California Crunch Tempura Samurai is Kani Kama Krab, Cream Cheese, Chives, and Water Chestnuts rolled and Tempura fried, drizzled with Sweet Thai Chili Sauce, Spicy Mayo and Sriracha. Love the presentation here, too! Tempura Samurai The Fantasy Roll is a Splitsville specialty comprised of fresh Salmon, Cucumber and Avocado rolled into Soy Paper and topped with Steamed Shrimp and Ahi Tuna, drizzled with spicy Kimchi Ponzu Sauce. Fantasy Roll For dessert, we ordered a Super Sundae: heaping scoops of Vanilla and Chocolate Ice Cream topped with Chocolate Sauce, Caramel Sauce, Whipped Cream, Sprinkles, and a Cherry. It’s pretty huge, so you might want to share. (Or not. We don’t judge.) Oh and all the sushi is made in the on-site sushi kitchen! Splitsville sushi kitchen Splitsville Sushi Kitchen Super Sundae The Banana Streusel Pizza is a unique option incorporating House-made Pizza Crust topped with Banana, crunchy Streusel, Caramel Sauce, Vanilla Ice Cream, and Whipped Cream. It looks like a hot mess — but it’s delicious! Banana Streusel Pizza Seriously, for a bowling alley, Disneyland Splitsville is a great place for a fun meal — even without hitting the lanes! In fact, bowling isn’t the only entertainment on tap at Disneyland Splitsville. There will also be live music on the patio every night! Plus, the menu is huge, and the eats are well done. Animal Kingdom Lodge is a mecca for unique dining at Walt Disney World. Learn About: Sanaa Animal Kingdom Lodge Disney World Restaurants Whether you’re sampling the buffet at Boma, selecting stellar wines at Jiko, or digging into soulful food at Sanaa, Animal Kingdom Lodge’s Jambo House and Kidani Village have always been destination eating. And it’s clear to see why. From the moment that you set foot into one of these restaurants, you are embraced by the warm atmosphere and intrigued by the art of Africa all around you. And then there’s the aroma, which you know means amazing eats await. Sanaa is the newest of the three Animal Kingdom Lodge restaurants, and it’s made its mark on guests since day one. We’ve loved the Indian-Style Bread Service every time we’ve tried it, and the Butter Chicken has stood the test of time. But I’d been hearing from some of our readers and followers that Sanaa’s time was up. That the experience there wasn’t living up to the hype and the food just wasn’t what it used to be. So I made a reservation and headed over ASAP to experience it again for myself. Atmosphere Sanaa is themed and highly visual, with artwork greeting guests from the moment they arrive. The sign outside the restaurant is surrounded by woven baskets of various designs. And while they are stationary, something about their arrangement is still energetic. Sanaa Sanaa Lounge offers potential for walk-up guests who want to drink a little African wine or a unique cocktail — or who want to taste one or more of Sanaa’s signature appetizers! Sanaa Lounge Inside the restaurant proper, you’ll feel like you’ve entered an artist’s rendering of a cozy forest. Around and above you are trees, their canopies wide and dark. You’ll also see depictions of African art — like pillars that look like stacked drums — and lovely woven and wooden pieces. Inside Sanaa Seating varies, including cozy banquets upholstered in beautiful batik fabrics and carved wooden tables and chairs. Sanaa Seating Sanaa Seating And don’t be surprised if you’re joined by some of Animal Kingdom Lodge’s permanent residents — including zebra, giraffe, and whooping cranes. All saunter by on the savannah throughout the day. View of Animals from Sanaa But while the animals are content to munch on the grasslands, what should the humans eat? Come, I’ll show you! Eats Sanaa features a terrific selection of specialty cocktails, non-alcoholic specialties, draft beer, bottled beer, and typical soft drinks on its drink menu. Drinks Menu at Sanaa You can see on the bottom of the Drinks Menu the listing for Indian-Style Bread Service. That was my first stop. And it was an easy choice to make. The Indian-Style Bread Service gives you a choice of five breads and three accompaniments — unless you’re like me and you just have to try them all. That option exists, too! Bread choices include Traditional Naan, Garlic-Ginger Naan, Spiced Naan, Onion Kulcha, or Paneer Paratha. On this visit I went with three traditional naan with three different butters — regular, garlic, and sriracha (!!!) — one paneer paratha (flatbread with Indian-style cheese in the dough), and an onion kulcha. Bread Service When I say all the accompaniments, this is what I mean: nine specially prepared Indian-style sauces to eat with the bread. The sauces include (on the right, front to back) Garlic Pickle, Coriander Chutney, Spicy Jalapeno-Lime Pickle, and Red Chile Sambal and (on the left, front to back) Red Pepper Hummus, Tomato-Date Jam, Tamarind Chutney, Mango Chutney, and Cucumber Raita. The sauces are complex and exceptional. And each has a unique flavor profile, showcasing the wonder that is the world of Indian sauces. I like to combine flavors, making this a fun, interactive part of the meal at Sanaa. For example, the cooling Cucumber Raita pairs well with the spicier Red Chili Sambal, and the tart Tamarind Chutney goes well with the potent Garlic Pickle. Bread Service Accompaniments And as if that Bread Service wasn’t marvelous enough, look who joined me. I figured this crane was ready for its close-up (and wanted in on my bread!). But in reality, the Sanaa windows have a mirror-like coating on them that makes it difficult for the animals to see inside (makes sense), so this fella was actually just preening at a view of himself. Hello, friend. My server said that this particular location was kind of a “home base” for these birds, since the larger animals can’t get to the area so close to the building. Anyway, back to the food. The Bread Service is quite filling, but you’ll want to eat all of it because it’s just that good. And it’s STILL that good. No drop-off in excellence with the Sanaa cult classic appetizer IMO. Still, sharing might help you to save space for the entrees here because they are also fantastic. Lunch Menu at Sanaa First up is Mishkaki. This dish consists of Gingered Braai Beef Kabab with Kenyan Mukimo and Braised Greens. Braai refers to the cooking process for the beef, which entails using tongs rather than forks to turn the meat, thus preventing the escape of the meat’s succulent juices. Mishkaki The Kenyan Mukimo is the green mashed side in the background, which is traditionally a combination of Potatoes, Pumpkin Leaves (or other greens), Peas, and Corn. This version was delicious and a nice partner to the flavorful beef. Meanwhile the Braised Greens were terrific — a savory combination of chopped collard greens, tomatoes, and spices. This was easily one of my favorite dishes of the day. The meat was cooked just right, the flavors were great, and I loved the uniqueness (but still totally picky-eater-friendly) Mukimo. Mishkaki The Sanaa Burger looks simple — but there’s a little more to it than you’d think. It’s a thick, juicy beef patty served on a Naan Bun and topped with Spiced Mustard and Peppadew-Goat Cheese. Sides include Sanaa Chips and pickle spear. You’ll also get a little red onion and lettuce on the side in case you want to add them to the burger. Sanaa Burger The bun itself was soft enough to enjoy but sturdy enough to control that thick patty. And the meat was flavorful and perfectly cooked. Picky eaters might be able to get by with this — but ask for the sauces on the side because they do have unique flavors. For those with more adventurous tastes, skip the burger — there are other great options on the Sanaa menu that are worth your while. Perfectly cooked Sanaa Burger My final entree of the day was the Boerewores Sausage Sandwich. This traditional South African sausage consists of various cuts of meat mixed with spices like cloves, nutmeg, and coriander. This version was good, and the texture was there. The sandwich comes with and benefits from the Balsamic-Glazed Red Onions and Confit Cherry Tomatoes that accompany it. But I wanted the sausage itself to be a bit more flavorful than it was. It didn’t capture me like the Mishkaki did. Boerewores Sausage Sandwich One of the more popular options at Sanaa is the Potjie Inspired. This dish allows diners to select two (not so) small dishes alongside a serving of Basmati Rice. Diners choose one item from Journey (Goan Seafood Curry, Butter Chicken, Braised Beef, or Spicy Durban Shrimp) and one item from Harvest (Aloo Masala, Chickpea Wit, Lentil Dhal, Paneer Tikka, or Cilantro-Coconut Vegetables). I went with Butter Chicken and Paneer Tikka (Chicken and Cheese — my favorites! ;-D). The Butter Chicken is a heavily spiced (flavor spicy, not hot spicy) sauce in which chicken has stewed. The sauce includes butter (or ghee) and is super rich. This has been a favorite of mine at Sanaa for YEARS. Paneer Tikka is another flavorful sauce, this time with a tomato and yogurt base. The paneer is soft, mild Indian-style cheese, cubed, and often described as a solid cottage cheese. Butter Chicken (Left) and Paneer Tikka (Right) There’s a reason these are some of Sanaa’s most popular dishes. They’re still incredible and well worth an order. You might think all of that was sufficient, but on this visit, I wanted to try several desserts. And so I did! All of them save for the Letite Creme. Lunch Desserts at Sanaa African Triple Mousse consists of layers of Manjari 64% Dark Chocolate Mousse from Madagascar, Jivara Chocolate Mousse, and Ivoire White Chocolate Mousse. These top a Chocolate Biscuit. Strawberry compote and fresh berries garnish the dish. There’s also some tasty crumble on the plate, which helps to break up all the soft textures. Overall, this was kind of meh. It’s beautiful, but the flavors weren’t there for me and I really wasn’t impressed. So I’d say skip this one. African Triple Mousse The Chocolate-Orange Tart comes in a stunning tart shell and consists of Blood Orange Crémeux, Chocolate Mousse, Candied Blueberries, and Orange Gel. The plating is artistic, with chocolate mousse domes accenting the top of the tart. Chocolate-Orange Tart The Orange Cremeux is beautiful: smooth, tangy, and sweet. It paired well with the chocolate, and those blueberries were a really interesting foil. Overall, this one was fine, especially if you like stronger flavors. But still wasn’t a favorite. Chocolate-Orange Tart Interior Serradura is plated simply with Butterscotch Pudding, Almond Coffee Streusel, Pineapple, Mango, and Breton Shortbread. It’s kind of a small portion, but the pudding itself was killer. Smooth and rich, I basically couldn’t stop eating it! Definitely should be a consideration for you! Serradura This last dessert is the most fun — and the most delicious — of the four I tried. Now to preface, “candy bars” have been common on many dessert menus lately. Most of the time they’re cake or mousse based without any real resemblance to “candy,” and without a whole lot of flavor. So much so that I’ve actually avoided ordering these candy bars on most dessert menus because they’re always a disappointment. But THIS WAS DIFFERENT, MY FRIENDS. The Spice Road Candy Bar is a Coconut, Apricot, Caramel, Pistachio, and Cashew Bar coated with Milk Chocolate, topped with Chai Cream, Pistachio Crumb, and Apricot Gelee. It definitely sounds like a lot, right? But it’s basically the best Snickers bar I’ve ever eaten. Spice Trade Candy Bar This is no cop-out. It’s a straight up candy bar, and a gourmet one at that. Caramel, nuts, coconut, and a milk chocolate coating — it’s truly amazing. And the fruity elements with the chocolate — again in this dish! — work well. Particularly with the coconut inside, which is slightly sweet and a nice addition to the bar. Spice Trade Candy Bar Interior Excellent way to end the meal! THIS is the dessert you choose when you’re at Sanaa. Nosh or Not? Embrace Sanaa if: You love the feeling of Animal Kingdom Lodge and want to spend time in its warm, welcoming restaurants. You enjoy trying foods that are a little more uncommon in this country. You like consistently awesome food and unique dining experiences. Skip Sanaa if: You don’t plan on spending any time at Animal Kingdom Lodge and don’t want to go out of your way to dine here. You prefer food that’s less adventurous. You don’t care for table service dining during your WDW vacation — you just wanna ride Expedition: Everest already! Overall Welp, in my experience, Sanaa still got it. I’m not discounting my readers’ and followers’ less-than-stellar experiences, and those should definitely be noted and considered since I heard from several people that Sanaa wasn’t living up to expectations. But on my recent visit, it was just as charming and delicious as always, and the service was attentive, knowledgable, and personable. Great food, good service, a view that’s 100% unique to this restaurant — absolute bonuses that create a recommended dining experience. But the food itself has the power to transport diners to another place. And that’s what Sanaa’s all about. It means “work of beauty” in Swahili, and, for me, it still rings true.
