  1. While at the Contempo Cafe, one of our favorite quick service locations on property, we spotted the new Firework Cupcake, and we just had to try this to see if it was a taste explosion or a disappointing dud. Firework Cupcake at Contempo Cafe: Flavor Explosion or Dud? The first thing that attracted us to this cupcake was its chocolate paint splattered Mickey Hat! Then the name drew our attention followed by the description of the flavors. The Firework starts out with a Chocolate Cupcake which is perfectly normal…but look at that filling! Red Hot Candy Caramel filling! Its all topped with vanilla buttercream icing. You know we had to try this out to see if these flavors really worked together — or at all. Contempo Cafe Firework Cupcake But first, another look at this cupcake. We love how the firework theme is carried out with the color explosion on the Mickey hat and the firework effect with the frosting around the cupcake. Firework Cupcake at Contempo Cafe: Flavor Explosion or Dud? After admiring the cupcake it was time to dig in. Firework Cupcake at Contempo Cafe: Flavor Explosion or Dud? Guess what, it wasn’t as bad as we thought it might be! There is a definite Red Hot flavor in there, but not overwhelming at all, and with the sweetness of the caramel it works with the chocolate. Firework Cupcake at Contempo Cafe: Flavor Explosion or Dud? Plus, the nice amount of vanilla buttercream frosting is appreciated! This isn’t the best cupcake we’ve ever had at this location, but it is a fun cupcake and makes for an interesting diversion from the usual cupcake flavors you might expect. 3. Looking back at 2018, it was an incredible year for Disney foodies! With celebrations, stylish color trends, festivals, foodie guides, and a TON of incredible new openings, there’s so much to look back on, so here are a few of the tasty highlights from Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort this past year. First, we kicked off 2018 with a special cupcake, which led to a whole host of treats that would be found on both coasts throughout the rest of the year. The Rose Gold Cupcake at Epcot was just the beginning – soon after, we offered up yummy rose gold treats (like the hugely popular Rose Gold Churro) throughout our parks and resorts. These became so popular, our chefs just couldn’t resist creating even more colorful goodies to match the new spirit jerseys and headbands that were being released. Millennial pink and iridescent sweets hit the parks, inspiring thousands of guests across the country to come taste for themselves (and get that perfect Instagram shot!). At Walt Disney World Resort, we started off the year with the opening of The Arena at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex – which houses seven new concession stands and over 30 carts featuring all-new menus and appetizing eats. We opened Sebastian’s Bistro, Banana Cabana, and Centertown Market at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort as well as Spyglass Grill at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, which all serve up their own unique takes on Caribbean- and Latin-inspired cuisines. And most recently, we opened Storybook Dining at Artist Point, where guests can dine with Snow White and her forest-dwelling friends at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Resort. Over the summer, we joined a few of our Pixar pals in Andy’s backyard to celebrate the opening of Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios! With this brand-new land came Woody’s Lunch Box, a walk-up window serving cheesy sandwiches, snacks, and the popular Lunch Box Tarts (which come in chocolate-hazelnut and raspberry by the way – YUM). Disney Springs had quite the year with three all-new foodie experiences and the opening of several new restaurants. Experience like Bourbon, Brews & BBQ, and WonderFall gave guests the opportunity to explore different seasonal flavors with unique dishes offered at restaurants and quick-service locations throughout the shopping district. In addition, we opened Maria & Enzo’s, Pizza Ponte, Enzo’s Hideaway, The Edison, Wine Bar George, Terralina Crafted Italian, Chicken Guy!, and Wolf Gang Puck Bar and Grill this year – adding to the ever-growing list of incredible dining establishments that can be found at Disney Springs. The festivals at Epcot were more popular than ever this year featuring returning favorites, twists on classics, and a feast of new dishes at the International Festival of the Arts, the International Flower & Garden Festival, the International Food & Wine Festival, and the International Festival of the Holidays. There was also the Awesome Mix Live, a “Guardians of the Galaxy” concert series where we featured an array of colorful space-inspired slushes as well as a cute little Groot Sipper Cup! Alongside these popular celebrations at Epcot, we had a pretty Incredible Summer at Magic Kingdom Park with snacks inspired by Disney•Pixar’s “The Incredibles,” and H2O Glow at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water featured some splashing new bites. At Disneyland Resort, the Lunar New Year celebrations kicked off the new year with a bang, with dishes inspired by cultures from all over the world at Disney California Adventure park. This exciting festival was followed up by the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival, which offered plates that were inspired by cuisines from all over the state of California. Across property, we celebrated our favorite Pixar pals with the popular Pixar Fest! This festival featured brand-new sweets, treats, and dishes that highlighted beloved characters from the Disney•Pixar stories we know and love, and acted as a preview of what was to come over the summer for Pixar Pier! In June, this new land opened at Disney California Adventure park with a few new yummy locations – Adorable Snowman Frosted Treats, Señor Buzz Churros, Jack-Jack Cookie Num Nums, Angry Dogs, Bing Bong’s Sweet Stuff, and of course, the iconic Lamplight Lounge! As part of an ongoing transformation of the Downtown Disney District, we had quite a few new openings and renovations including Salt & Straw, Naples Ristorante e Bar, Wetzel’s Pretzels, and Splitsville Dining Room. And at Disneyland Park, we even opened a new hangout spot in Adventureland: The Tropical Hideaway! In addition, two new character dining experiences came to the Disneyland Resort Hotels: Donald Duck’s Seaside Breakfast at Disney’s PCH Grill at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel and Mickey’s Tales of Adventure Breakfast Buffet at Storytellers Cafe at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. At both Disneyland park and Disney California Adventure park, mobile order was introduced to select quick-service locations allowing guests to skip the line and order that delicious Disney food from the convenience of their own phones, how cool is that? And speaking of delicious Disney food, did you see some of the AMAZING churro offerings we had this year? From cookies and cream to fruity cereal to pumpkin spice and everything nice, our chefs had a blast creating new and unique churros for every occasion this year. Finally, we had spectacular Halloween and holiday celebrations at both Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland with deliciously spooky treats and delightfully festive dishes offered throughout the parks from September through December. Did you try the Candy Corn Milkshake from Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom Park or a Spoke-y Cone Macaron from Cars Land at Disney California Adventure park? What about one of the Shortbread Cookies from Flurry of Fun at Disney’s Hollywood Studios or a Candy Cane Mickey Beignet from the Mint Julep Bar at Disneyland park? Because they were all SO YUMMY! Overall, it has been an incredible year for Disney Parks Food & Beverage. I’ve had such a great time sharing all of it with you, and I can’t WAIT to show you what we have in store for 2019: more restaurants coming to the Downtown Disney District and Disney Springs, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opening on both coasts, new resort hotels, and more! So here’s to a whole new year full of good food, good friends, and good times. Cheers! 8. Tropical Imports in Disneyland’s Adventureland is the place to go for healthier-than-the-usual-theme-park-grub when you’re gearing up for your Jungle Cruise, and our Disneyland correspondent Heather (Maeva, @DiningInDisney) has discovered a sweet, share-able treat that’s the perfect fuel for your fun. Tropical Imports The Tropical Bar is packed with flavors — from dried fruits, nuts, and coconut — that provide a lot of sweetness and sustainable energy. You’ll find them in a basket at the check-out, so it’s the perfect treat to grab-and-go! Click here to check out a food hack from Tropical Imports! (Spoiler alert: it involves Dole Whip!) Tropical Bar The base of this bar contains graham flour, so you’re getting a slight graham cracker-ness to every bite. The topping is a mixture of dried mango, dried apricots, dried cherries, chocolate chips, pecans, coconut, and sweet binders like sweetened condensed milk. It’s basically a tropical seven layer bar!! Tropical Bar This is a size-able treat, making it great to share — and there’s a little trick here to make sharing even easier. More on that in a bit! Tropical Bar You can see the layers here, with the sweet tropical fruit on top of the richer chocolate chip layer, on top of the golden crust. The layers of flavors are also layers of energy, with the chocolate offering a blast of sugar and the fruits offering longer-lasting boost. Tropical Bar One of the coolest features of these bars is that they are pre-cut (from the bottom), so you can easily portion them out or share them with your fellow adventurers. Tropical Bar Each of the six squares is packed with all of the flavors of the bar, and Heather found this super-sweet treat to be rich and dense, so eating more than one square at a time is a bit of a challenge. (A welcome challenge, really!) Tropical Bar If you find yourself with a jungle-sized hunger, head to Tropical Imports and give the Tropical Bar a try! 17. What do you picture when you hear the word “brunch“? Perfectly runny eggs, crisp-yet-juicy fried chicken, bacon-covered donuts, and creamy grits topped with blistered cheese? Hush Puppy Benedict If any of that sounds irresistible, Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ Florida Kitchen and Southern Shine Bar at Disney Springs might just be the perfect brunch spot for you. DFB recently paid Homecomin’ a visit to experience the Rise and Shine Brunch, and we have lots of great info to share with you! The Rise and Shine Brunch is available at Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. The regular menu is available starting at 11:00 AM. Yes, that means if you get there at 1:30, you can enjoy the lunch menu and the brunch menu! Atmosphere Inside of Homecomin’, you’ll find a casual, rustic vibe with natural wood, matte metal finishes, and lots of sunlight. Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ And, yep, you may spot a church pew or two. ;-D Kitchen and Seating Area Seating and View It’s a comfortable spot for high-end comfort food! Sweet Start Any day you can have doughnuts to start your meal is a good day, right? The House-made Doughnuts ($8) at Homecomin’ are available as shown – with icing, pecans, bacon, and caramel – or simply dusted with sugar and served with spiced cane syrup. House-made Doughnuts These little doughnuts were certainly flavorful! While they were a nice combination of sweet and savory, the bacon flavor was really dominant. If you’re a bacon fan, you’ll probably like ’em! The restaurant does tend to run out of doughnuts in the afternoon, so consider yourself warned. These are BRUNCH ONLY. House-made Donuts Enticing Entrees Behold, the Hush Puppy Benedict ($20): house-made hush puppy cakes, fried chicken tenders, poached eggs, griddled country ham, and pimento hollandaise. Yes, that’s right: hollandaise and cheese meet in one sauce. *Heart eyes for days.* Hush Puppy Benedict This dish was really unique and completely excellent. It had all of the best textures: salty, chewy country ham; fried chicken that was delightfully crisp on the outside and completely juicy on the inside; and perfectly poached eggs. The hush puppy pancakes had a nice, fluffy interior and a toasty, crunchy exterior. If you’re into savory breakfast foods, Hush Puppy Benedict has everything you could ever want (though we think the addition of a few slices of Fried Green Tomato couldn’t hurt!). Hush Puppy Benedict Next up: the Short Rib Hash ($22). Ridiculously tender, oh-so-flavorful short rib, grilled corn succotash, potatoes, red bell peppers, Fresno peppers, and two sunny-side up eggs. Comes with one of Homecomin’s famous Cheddar Drop Biscuits. Short Rib Hash One of us found this dish good but not incredibly exciting, and the other loved it. If you’re feeling a slightly spicy, breakfast-y version of pot roast, the Short Rib Hash might be right up your alley! Short Rib Hash We were very excited about the Hallelujah Biscuit ($22): an open-faced Cheddar Drop Biscuit, pimento cheese, Chef Art’s famous fried chicken, pecan-smoked bacon, and sawmill gravy. Hallelujah Biscuit Chef Art’s Cheddar Drop Biscuits are so buttery and cheesy, and they made the perfect base for the Hallelujah Biscuit. The bacon was thick and crisp (no sad, clear, wiggly bacon here!), the chicken was juicy, and the egg yolks were cooked perfectly. The only change we would make? Just a liiiittle more pimento cheese and gravy! Hallelujah Biscuit Are you more of a “sweet stuff for breakfast” kind of person? Don’t fret — Homecomin’ has a few entrees for you, too! Check out the French Toast ($17) for a totally sweet entree or the Fried Chicken & Doughnuts ($26) for a combination of sweet and salty. Brunching with little ones? Homecomin’ offers a Kiddos menu with two youth-friendly entrees: the French Toast and the Junior Farmer Plate (two eggs with any side). Both are $8 each. Scrumptious Sides With most of the Rise and Shine Brunch menu selections at Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’, you get to choose a side! At the time of our visit, the available brunch sides included Bradley’s Grits, Potato Gratin Mash, Seasonal Fruit, Pecan-Smoked Bacon, and Griddled Country Ham. The Potato Gratin Mash was incredible: soft, creamy mashed potatoes, lots of butter, and melted cheese that was both crisp and gooey. Potato Gratin Mash We also loved Bradley’s Grits. They were literally the creamiest grits we’ve ever had (fun fact: the individual grits seemed bigger than standard grits); and similar to the Potato Gratin Mash, they were creamy, buttery, cheesy, and delicious. In fact, we had a lot of trouble deciding whether we liked Bradley’s Grits or the Potato Gratin Mash more! Bradley’s Grits Lively Libations Do you require a Mimosa with your brunch? While Homecomin’ does offer a Princess Mimosa, we suggest checking out the popular White Peach Sangria. It has everything you love about a classic mimosa – soft fizz and a hint of orange – but with prominent notes of juicy peach. The ingredients list includes La Perla Moscato, orange and mango, peach moonshine, and a moonshine-soaked peach slice. If you’re not a peach fan, though? Steer clear! White Peach Sangria More of a Bloody Mary enthusiast? Good news: They’ve got FIVE different ones for you to choose from! Decadent Desserts Homecomin’ is known for their Shine Cake and Hummingbird Cake, and you honestly can’t go wrong with either. Shine Cake, pictured below, is a moist, dense cake – similar to pound cake – with a sweet glaze and hints of moonshine flavor. Shine Cake The Hummingbird Cake is another southern specialty done right at Homecomin’. Layers of sweet cake chock full of pineapples, all covered in a thick cream cheese icing. Basically heaven on a plate, but VERRRRRY sweet. So be prepared! Hummingbird Cake Overall Looking for a great place for brunch in Disney Springs? The Rise and Shine Brunch at Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ is a winner. Each dish was flavorful and substantial, and the service was helpful and so friendly. This is a particularly great spot for those who like a rich, savory breakfast, comfort food, and southern cooking. Want more Homecomin’ in your life? We get it.
