A popular — and game-changing — hotel perk is officially returning to Walt Disney World in 2026, and it’s sure to inject a strong dose of… character in many vacations! Pop Century As part of the returning Cool Kids Summer promotion — which runs from May 26th to September 8th — Disney characters will be appearing in scheduled meet & greets at select Walt Disney World hotels. First introduced in 2025, this game-changing perk allows guests to experience character encounters that were previously park-exclusive on days when they choose not to leave their hotels. This can be especially helpful for parents who want to have a bit of a cool-down day at their resort, while still being able to appease kiddos who are yearning for some Disney magic. Character Meet and Greet sign at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort As part of the 2026 Cool Kids Summer promotion, character encounters are expanding to the following hotels: Disney’s Art of Animation Resort Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort Disney’s Pop Century Resort Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside Hey Chip! Further perks available at Disney hotels this summer include: The return of free water park tickets for all members of a party on check-in day. The perk is returning in the summer of 2026, specifically from May 26th to September 8th. Guests staying at Disney Resort hotels (and select other hotels) can take advantage of a 30-minute early entry into each of Walt Disney World’s theme parks every day of their stay (including check-in and check-out days). Furthermore, as part of the returning Cool Kids Summer promotion, Disney will offer special character meet & greets during Early Entry. There’s no list of which characters will be available in each park, but they WILL be different! Disney is encouraging guests to visit the different parks for Early Entry throughout their trip so they can take advantage of all the special meet and greets. Extended Evening Hours are offered at select Walt Disney World theme parks on select nights. However, these two extra hours are only available to guests at Disney Deluxe Tier or Deluxe Villa resort guests. Guests staying at Walt Disney World Hotels can begin booking their Lightning Lanes 7 days in advance of the first day of their stay for the duration of their stay (up to 14 days). This is 4 days sooner than non-Disney guests who’ve purchased theme park tickets. Disney hotel guests can also book their dining 60 days in advance of the first day of their stay, once again for the full duration of their stay (up to 14 days). Animal Kingdom During Extended Evening Hours Character appearances at select Disney World hotels are just one of the hotel perks returning to Disney World this summer! Your Disney World vacation is about to look a lot different than yesterday! Cinderella Castle It was confirmed back in the summer of 2025 that the Cinderella Castle would undergo a makeover — going back to its original blue and grey color scheme. Disney followed up on that announcement a few months later, stating that the repainting would begin on January 28th. Crazy enough, the time is officially here, which means THREE big changes have begun at Magic Kingdom! We know what you’re probably thinking. What happens to the shows that take place on the castle or on the castle’s stage during this time? Don’t worry, they’re still happening (well, almost all of them are), they’re just going to look different for right now. So let’s take a look at what’s happening so you can plan your day accordingly! Magic Kingdom “Let the Magic Begin” The show that begins your day at Magic Kingdom is the “Let the Magic Begin” show. It’s a show that typically opens the park, as you’re greeted by Mickey Mouse and his pals, welcoming you into the Magic Kingdom. The show used to start at 8:55 AM, but is no longer showing times starting today. Let The Magic Begin Disney posted on their website, “Cinderella Castle is currently undergoing a magical transformation. Due to project work, Let The Magic Begin will be temporarily modified. While characters will not be making an appearance during this time, you will still hear the welcome fanfare and music to start your day at Magic Kingdom.” So, we’ll still get to hear the beloved fanfare and music to welcome us into the park, but it looks like we won’t get to see the show in all its glory for a while! Cinderella Castle Mickey’s Magical Friendship Faire Alright, let’s talk about the popular stage show that takes place on the stage multiple times a day, Mickey’s Magical Friendship Faire. This musical extravaganza features Mickey and his pals as they make new friends with various iconic Disney characters. The show features your favorite music and characters from Princess and the Frog, Tangled, and Frozen. Mickey’s Magical Friendship Faire The show used to take place in the morning, but it has now moved to an afternoon-only schedule — with showtimes at 1 PM, 2:05 PM, 4 PM, and 5:15 PM. This also means that Disney will be reducing daily performances from five shows to four shows! Hey, at least we will still get to see the characters for this one. ©Disney Happily Ever After That brings us to our third change, the beloved nighttime spectacular, Happily Ever After! We know everyone would be freaking out if the very popular show featuring amazing fireworks, projection mapping, and music just went away. Don’t worry, Happily Ever After WILL still be happening every night. However, because of the projection mapping feature, there will be minor adjustments to the show as needed during this transformation process. Happily Ever After So, work has officially begun, and it isn’t expected to be complete until later in the year. You’ve probably noticed the changes affect the morning more than the afternoon. That’s because work on the castle will only be done during the mornings. It was stated that the cranes around the castle should be lowered by 12 PM (noon) each day at the latest, making it easier for you to take those iconic castle photos. Cinderella Castle We can’t wait to see the castle with its old style back. That nostalgia is going to hit us hard! Make sure to pay attention to showtimes and changes, and plan accordingly now that things are going to look different for a little while. A new protein-heavy food fad is sweeping the United States, with a somewhat unprecedented level of governmental approval. However, experts warn it may be dangerous. New York Strip Heavily processed protein-based snacks and meat sticks such as Slim Jims have been around for about a century, but they’re truly having a moment right now. For example, according to USA Today, the popular meat stick brand Chomps saw a reported 206% increase in its sales growth in 2024, part of $3.3 billion in overall sales for the meat snacks category in the same year. The protein push has been reinforced by the Trump Administration, as Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently updated U.S. dietary guidelines, reprioritized protein intake, including moving red meat to the top of the newly redesigned food pyramid. ©RealFood.gov However, some experts are wary of this emphasis on protein ingestion. For starters, as Dr. Fang Fang Zhang, a cancer epidemiologist focused on nutrition, told USA TODAY, “On average, we are not falling short of protein. The bigger gap is really the quality of the protein, the sources, particularly protein from seafoods and plant protein.” While the government’s new guidelines do stress “real” foods, much of the increase in protein consumption has been processed foods like the aforementioned meat sticks. Ultra-processed foods have long been linked with health conditions like Type 2 diabetes, heart diseases, mental health disorders, and obesity, and higher risks of cancer, obesity and cardiovascular diseases. ©Target Food journalist Elizabeth Dunn recently appeared on a podcast discussing the issue, saying bluntly, “The data is very, very clear – I mean, like decades of large-scale, reputable studies that show that the higher in meat your diet is, the higher your chances are of getting cancer, of getting diabetes, of all-cause mortality – meaning just basically dying younger.” Meanwhile, Dr. Daniel Dunham, chair of medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, reiterated these dangers in USA Today, stressing the dangers of processed foods and meats, telling the outlet, “If you don’t have any other protein sources… then it’s probably better than nothing. But if you have other types of proteins, they’re going to be superior from a health perspective.” Inside of the burger As a new protein-heavy diet trend sweeps the U.S., some experts are warning of the dangers of increased meat consumption, especially in processed forms. After years of flying to Disney World and racking up more delays than I can count, there’s one arrival window I now avoid at all costs. Orlando International Airport If you are traveling by plane to your Disney World vacation, there are a lot of issues that can pop up. One of the worst is a delayed flight. As someone who lives 600 miles away and often flies to Disney World, I’ve learned a few things on how to avoid a delayed flight because nothing kills the vacation vibes more than that. There is one time of day I will absolutely avoid booking a flight for, and you should too. Early afternoon is consistently one of the riskiest times to fly into Orlando, especially during Florida’s storm season. Central Florida is known for thunderstorms that typically develop after lunchtime, and even brief storms can force air traffic control to reduce or reroute flights. Because Florida has limited flight paths in and out of the state, these weather disruptions don’t just delay one plane. Instead, they create a domino effect that can stall arrivals for hours. Travelers often assume a short storm won’t impact their flight, but by the time planes are allowed to land again, a significant backlog has already formed. Southwest at MCO These delays hit afternoon travelers harder because there’s very little recovery time left in the day. Morning flights tend to leave before storms begin, while evening flights often suffer from delays that started hours earlier. If your early afternoon flight gets pushed back, you’re more likely to miss connections, arrive late at night, or even get stuck overnight if crews time out or weather worsens. For families heading to Disney World, this can mean losing an entire vacation day before the trip even officially begins. It’s basically a family reunion. Elaine West Grimes, a 50‑year cast member at 50’s Prime Time Café, reflected on her remarkable journey with heartfelt emotion: “Disney has felt like home for 50 years. Each day has given me the chance to make magic for our guests. Celebrating tonight reminds me why I started and why I’ve stayed. These cast members and our guests are like family, and together we keep the magic going.” Where Careers Grow as Big as the Magic This night isn’t just about celebrating years. It’s about celebrating a workplace where those years add up. Walt Disney World President Jeff Vahle knows a thing or two about growing a career at Disney. He started as an entry‑level engineer back in 1990 and went on to help open Disney’s Animal Kingdom, lead major operational teams, and even support the development and opening of Shanghai Disney Resort. Today, his Disney journey spans more than 35 years and has taken him around the world, all while working alongside the cast members who create the magic. He shared: “Our cast members shape the magic our guests feel every day,” Jeff said, “and this celebration is a way of saying, ‘thank you,’ for decades of extraordinary guest service, and the legacy they continue to build. Tonight, I am celebrating 35 years with Disney, and it feels great to reflect on all we have done together. It truly is a magical evening.” Melissa Valiquette, Vice President, Park Operations, Development & Industrial Engineering, celebrating 30 years with the company, echoed that same message: “The dedication and care our cast members show to one another and to our guests are what bring our stories to life every day. We are proud to honor not only their years of service, but also the countless moments of magic they have created and sustained across generations.” Generations of Magic Makers (Literally) One of the most emotional parts of the evening? Seeing families who have built Disney careers across generations. Recently retired 30‑year cast member Kimmie Sue Hall celebrated the night with her son, also a cast member. “Disney is part of our family’s heritage. Sharing these traditions with my son and passing that legacy forward is incredibly meaningful. Disney isn’t just where we worked. It’s where values, stories, and a love for creating happiness are passed from one generation to the next.” A Night of Characters, Music, and Celebration Cast members enjoyed after‑hours park access, rare character moments, live entertainment, private attractions, and special touches designed just for the honorees. For Diego Parras, Senior Producer for Walt Disney Imagineering, the evening brought back memories of where his own journey started: “Thinking back to starting at Star Tours at just 17, it just amazes me how much this 35‑year journey has shaped my life. Disney Vacation Club members have a romantic Valentine’s Day surprise ahead of them! Mickey and Minnie! Being a Disney Vacation Club Member comes with tons of perks for dining, hotel stays, events, and more! Now, there’s a new DVC event happening very soon for a limited-time only. Let’s take a peek at what it could be! Disney Vacation Club is offering a Valentine’s Day–themed experience called the Disney Vacation Club Meet & Treat. This event will take place inside the Convention Center at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, offering DVC members the chance to enjoy sweet treats and meet with Disney characters. A new DVC experience is on the way! The exclusive event will be held on select dates in February. The dates include: February 2nd February 3rd February 9th February 10th The event will run on those dates from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. All members have to do is simply show up during event hours with their valid Disney Vacation Club Digital Membership Card and a photo ID — so don’t forget those! 2024 Valentine’s Day at Disney’s Boardwalk We advise you to arrive earlier, as the event will have a capacity limit. You’re obviously way less likely to run into that issue if you’re there first. Once capacity is reached, there will be a standby line available. However, there’s a chance the line could be closed depending on the demand and the time. Membership Magic Just to provide more specifics, the event will be in the Fantasia Ballroom West Salons & Pastorals on the main level of Disney’s Contemporary Resort Convention Center. Hotel parking will NOT be available, so plan accordingly. Disney World does have lots of transportation options! Be on the lookout for event signage near the Convention Center entrance and follow directions toward the West Rotunda. DVC events are the best! Each Membership Card allows the member to bring up to four guests, or the number of guests listed on their resort reservation, whichever is fewer. Every attendee who is under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a participating parent or guardian. Also, the member listed on the Digital Membership Card MUST be present to check in. What’s a trip to the Disney World theme parks without grabbing a snack? While we were in Disney’s Animal Kingdom this morning, we made a stop by Tamu Tamu Refreshments to grab a Pistachio Croissant. Pistachio Croissant This treat piqued our interest, as it replaced the Pistachio Honey Croissant that was previously available here. Now, a Pistachio Croissant and a Pistachio Honey Croissant sound pretty similar, but we will never say no to a chance for a Disney treat! Did this treat just get a name change, or did it also get some changes? You can grab the Pistachio Croissant at Tamu Tamu Refreshments for $6.49. The Disney menu doesn’t give us any more details than that, so let’s dig in and see how it tastes. First up, we noticed a difference from the previous Pistachio Honey Croissant. The Pistachio Croissant has pistachio frosting on top, while the last time we tried the Pistachio Honey Croissant, it only had pistachio crumbles. The new version has the frosting AND the pistachio crumbles. As we were taking pictures and videos of this treat, we were worried it would be really dry and tough. Even as we were tearing into it, it was hard to pull apart. Pistachio Croissant However, when we finally bit into it, we were surprised to find a light, fluffy croissant. The ends were a bit tough, but still easy to chew. The pistachio frosting had a strong pistachio flavor, and we loved the added crunch from the pistachio pieces on top. The inside was filled with a bit of what tasted like honey butter, which was a tasty addition. The honey adds a bit of sweetness, and we enjoyed the additional butteriness it added. Pistachio Croissant We were so impressed by this Pistachio Croissant, and it is definitely something we would grab again. It is quick and easy, and SO yummy! We highly recommend adding this to your snack list for your next Animal Kingdom day. Keep in mind it is only available at breakfast, though, so make sure you stop by early enough! You know, so we can really celebrate the day! Magic Kingdom There’s a lot that goes into planning a Disney vacation — costs, where to stay, how to get around the property, what parks to go to, which dates to avoid, and so much more. Here at DFB, we want to help plan the best Disney trip imaginable, so let’s get right into it! Disney Discounts and Deals You should always be checking for any ticket, hotel, or other deals and discounts available at Disney World before booking anything — you never know where you might be able to save some extra money! For example, Disney is having a big exclusive hotel discount at Disney World for the summer. Disney World is also having a special deal that allows kids to eat FREE. Of course, the biggest one to look out for is any discounts and deals on Disney World tickets and vacation packages! EPCOT Dates to Book Another key thing to focus on when booking your Disney World vacation is finding the best dates to go. Typically, the summertime and major US holidays are the busiest days of the year at Disney. On top of that, there is a lot of work being done at the parks in 2026, which means you might want to avoid coming to the park till the work is done to get the full experience. Construction walls at Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Lightning Lane Major holidays at Disney World are the busiest time because it’s when most people have time available to come to the park. If you do come to Disney World on a busy day (and even if you don’t), buying Lightning Lane can really help save you time and energy on your vacation! Lightning Lane Research, Research, and Research There’s so much to do at Disney World, between four parks, two water parks, and a shopping district. Look into the parks — what attractions they have, experiences, restaurants, etc. What do you want to prioritize when you’re here? Do you have kiddos with you? What attractions do you HAVE to see? Is it Cosmic Rewind? Flight of Passage? Rise of the resistance? There are lots to take into consideration. A place like Magic Kingdom is the most iconic park, making it almost unskippable, while also being the park that might have the most for little Disney fans to do. Whereas EPCOT offers a unique experience that kids may not enjoy as much. But then again, EPCOT has Frozen and Ratatouille-themed attractions, which kids love. You just need to really take the time to find what you want to prioritize. Our advice: try to visit all the parks, but also know your limits! TRON Lightcycle / Run Plan Your Day Once you have your dates and parks picked out, make sure to plan ahead. This is essential for maximizing your day as much as you can. Yes, plans can change, and things can happen, but plan as best you can. The best way to do this is to use the My Disney Experience app or the Disney World website. Check the showtimes of different shows, parades, and nighttime spectaculars. Check what attractions may be closed. Book your restaurant reservation — this is SUPER important for popular dining experiences! This can all be seen and done on the app and website. Crystal Palace DON’T STRESS You’re going to Disney World, so don’t waste your time stressing about getting X amount of things done, not missing X, or being somewhere at X. Yes, plan ahead and stick to your plan as best you can. However, just enjoy your time, YOU’RE AT THE MOST MAGICAL PLACE ON EARTH! The Disney Adventure is so close to setting sail! The newest Disney Cruise Line ship was supposed to set sail in January 2026, but its maiden voyage has been pushed to March 20th, 2026. ©Disney This new ship is said to be unlike anything we’ve ever seen, and now, Disney has shared that a new firework spectaular is debuting along with the ship! We’re bringing you all of the details right here. The Disney Adventure is joining Disney’s cruise line fleet very soon, and we have been awaiting this new ship for years. The ship will have brand new entertainment, restaurants, themeing, and more. Every Disney cruise ship does offer fireworks at sea, but now the Disney Adventure is debuting a brand-new spectacular inspired by The Lion King! ©Disney The new show will be exclusive to this ship, and it’s called “The Lion King: Celebration in the Sky.” This show celebrates the story and the characters from the film with pyrotechnics, dramatic lighting, and songs from the film. The show will have original arrangements of “Circle of Life,” “Hakuna Matata,” “He Lives in You,” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” All of these will be performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra with voices from the Ndlovu Youth Choir from South Africa. ©Disney Cruise Line Shah Rukh Khan, voice of Mufasa in the Hindi-language version of Disney’s The Lion King (2019) and Mufasa (2024), will also narrate the show, which is super exciting! This show will be available on select nights during the 3 and 4-night cruises. There really is SO much to look forward to regarding this new cruise ship, so you know we are watching for every single detail and update. This ship’s home port is in Singapore, and it will be the first Disney Cruise Line ship to sail from Singapore’s Marina Bay Cruise Centre and throughout Southeast Asia. No, it’s not actually plastic, but it’s a cup of yellow goodness that is way better than normal nacho cheese. It’s not the pack that comes with Mickey Pretzels but a different kind that makes us swoon. Now our heart feels pretty heavy because it’s MISSING. When we were checking the online menu, as we do, we noticed that Cheese Sauce was off the menu at Backlot Express in Hollywood Studios. What?!? We obviously had to send a member of our team down to check it out in person because we just couldn’t believe it. Please come back! Sure enough, our beloved Plastic Cheese is off the menu. WHAT DO WE DO??????? Mobile Order pick up at Backlot Express Okay, okay. Deep breaths. It must be in other places at Hollywood Studios, but we had to check it with our own eyes to make sure. Dockside Diner and Woody’s Lunch Box still have this glorious $1 cup of golden beauty. Thank goodness. Woody’s Lunch Box Why do we love this cheap little add-on so much? Well, if you’ve had the nacho cheese with the pull-back lid on it from places like the pretzel carts, you might not have been overwhelmed. I understand because I used to be like that. What makes this other cup of cheese so much better than this one? Surely it’s all the same kind, right? NOPE! I had heard enough of my coworkers talking about it that I had to try it for myself. It’s different, we promise! I think the superior way to have it is at Casey’s Corner with the Mini Corn Dogs because once you dip your little corn dog into the yellow fountain of youth, you’ll understand. While it does taste like artificial cheese (as it should), it’s so much better than the other ones. The consistency is more enjoyable, and I think it has more flavor versus the other one, which makes do with pretzels and popcorn, but I usually jump into another quick service location to grab a cup before tearing through a Mickey Pretzel. We love the richer cheese flavor and how it’s usually served warm. We love you, plastic cheese! Maybe if we all band together and order more Plastic Cheese across Disney World, Disney will bring it back to even more locations! There’s so much to do with this cup of cheese, too. We love it with chicken tenders, French fries, burgers, popcorn, pretzels, mini corn dog nuggets, and potato chips. There’s also probably a hundred other things we would dip into liquid gold. When it comes to transportation options, not all Walt Disney World hotels are created equal. While some are connected by multiple arms of the Disney transportation apparatus — buses, boats, monorails, Skyliner gondolas — others are only serviced by buses, and on the far ends of the property at that. All-Star Sports Bus Stop These limited transportation hotels aren’t bad by any means — in fact, to some guests, the isolation is a feature as opposed to a bug — however, if you’re planning on visiting all of Disney World’s theme parks, Disney Springs, other hotels, etc., you may want to consider an alternate hotel. Animal Kingdom Lodge Animal Kingdom Lodge is ONLY connected to the rest of Walt Disney World via the bus system. No monorail, no Skyliner, no boats. That creates an issue for guests, as the hotel’s out-of-the-way location makes traveling practically anywhere on property take much longer than nearly any hotel, especially if they’re traveling to another Walt Disney World hotel to have a meal, etc., as it requires transferring at one of the parks or Disney Springs. Of course, guests can use rideshare vehicles like Uber, Lyft, or Disney’s Minnie Van service. However, that also means budgeting aside more rideshare funds than they would need to while staying at another on-property resort. Animal Kingdom Lodge While there’s no other Disney hotel that offers anything close to the live animal encounters that Animal Kingdom Lodge does, the Wilderness Lodge does offer a celebration of nature on a massive scale. Transportation-wise, the Wilderness Lodge offers watercraft service to the Magic Kingdom in addition to bus service. Wilderness Lodge Lobby The All-Star Resorts The All-Star Resorts — All-Star Movies, All-Star Music, and All-Star Sports — all offer only bus service, which can take a long time, especially when around rope drop or park closing. All Star Sports Resort Fellow Value-Tier hotels Pop Century and Art of Animation offer similar layouts and amenities to the All-Star resorts for a slightly higher price point. Their major transportation draw is access to the Walt Disney World Skyliner, which travels from a shared Pop/AOA station to several Disney World hotels, as well as EPCOT and Hollywood Studios. Disney Skyliner at Art of Animation and Pop Century Resorts Saratoga Springs and Old Key West Both of these Deluxe resorts technically offer guests access to two transportation methods: buses and the Sassagoula River cruise boats. However, only the former offers access to Disney World’s theme parks, which is an issue considering both of these resorts are all the way at the end of Disney property. Lead the way, Captain! A better option for those thinking in terms of transportation may be the Riviera Resort. The hotel is also a highly themed Deluxe Tier resort, but is more centrally located on property and has access to both buses and its own Skyliner station. Skyliner Coronado Springs Finally, there’s the Moderate Tier Coronado Springs Resort, which — stop us if you’ve heard this one before — only offers access to bus service. While this isn’t as much of an issue as it is at some other hotels, given Coronado Springs more central location, it’s still a bit of a knock against the hotel, given that similar hotels on property offer more options. Coronado Springs Case in-point, the Caribbean Beach Resort offers similar Moderate Tier amenities — plus the Fuentes del Morro Pool and Sebastian’s Bistro restaurant — as well as Skyliner access. Skyliner at Caribbean Beach Resort Next time you’re deciding which Walt Disney World hotel to stay at, be sure to keep their transportation options in mind, especially if you plan on traversing Disney property. Disney World Parks and Resorts just received approval for its Environmental Resource Permit, a major step forward for its affordable housing project in Central Florida. The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) has approved the permit application submitted by Walt Disney World Parks and Resorts for its Hartzog Road Attainable Housing Community. The permit application for an Individual Environmental Resource Permit was initially submitted on September 8th, 2025, and the permit was approved and issued on January 23rd, 2026. ©Disney The Hartzog Road Attainable Housing Community is a new community on nearly 80 acres in Horizon West. Disney is working with The Michaels Organization to develop 1,369 units of mixed-income housing in Central Florida. More than 1,000 of those units will be reserved for affordable housing. The development will be available for qualifying applicants in Central Florida, including Disney Cast Members. The Individual Environmental Resource Permit covers stormwater and drainage plans for the project. According to the South Florida Water Management District, an Environmental Resource Permit is required for “development or construction activities to prevent flooding, protect the water quality of Florida’s lakes and streams from stormwater pollution, and protect wetlands and other surface waters.” An Environmental Resource Permit is needed for dredging and filling in wetlands or surface waters, constructing flood protection facilities, providing stormwater containment and treatment, site grading, building dams or reservoirs, or other activities affecting state waters. ©Disney While the project still has many milestones to reach before it can even consider welcoming residents, the Environmental Resource Permit approval is still a great step forward. The housing community will be located in Horizon West, off of Hartzog Road, Avalon Road, and SR 429. During development, Disney is focused on intentional design, green landscapes, and thoughtful community planning.
