There’s yet another new treat at Kringla Bakeri og Kafe in Epcot’s Norway Pavilion. Salted Pecan Triple Chocolate Chip Cookie And this one’s a mouthful… it’s the Salted Pecan Triple Chocolate Chip Cookie! And you can even add on — as the sign in the bakery case says — “served warm.” This gigantic cookie takes up an entire plate. Salted Pecan Triple Chocolate Chip Cookie Let’s take the good news first: the “served warm” aspect is a true highlight of this cookie, giving it a nice, chewy center. And the shaved salt on top is a tasty touch. Salted Pecan Triple Chocolate Chip Cookie But oddly, even with the name “Salted Pecan Triple Chocolate Chip Cookie” seeming to promise lots of flavor… Salted Pecan Triple Chocolate Chip Cookie … somehow, the flavors weren’t too intense at all. Granted, we had recently enjoyed a Gideon’s Cookie, which may have made us a bit cookie spoiled. But all in all, this one fell a bit flat. So, while this cookie is enormous and easily shared, we’d probably quell our cookie craving with one of the offerings at Karamell-Küche not too far away in the Germany Pavilion instead. We were, however, wowed by a seasonal treat at Kringla Bakeri og Kafe today… check out the Specialty Lemon Cheesecake by clicking here! Don’t Miss Out on Any Disney Fun! Do you — or does a member of your Disney World traveling party — follow a vegetarian or plant-based diet? If so, then you’ll definitely want to know about a new resource in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. Disney Plant-Based Cuisine Guide — Spring 2019 Magic Kingdom dining locations are now carrying the “Disney Plant-Based Cuisine” guide to assist guests on the search for vegetarian and plant-based menu items! Disney Plant-Based Cuisine Guide — Spring 2019 The guide is noted as being published for Spring 2019, with a note encouraging guests to “spring into our delicious assortment of meatless menu items!” So we expect to see new editions accordingly. Fantasyland Fried Twinkie at Friar’s Nook Fantasyland and Frontierland Peter Pan Float Adventureland Black Bean Chips with Pineapple Jalapeno Hummus Liberty Square and Tomorrowland Vegetarian Chili Main Street, U.S.A. Though we’ve noticed the changing dining landscape with offerings such as the Vegan Brat at Friar’s Nook and the Falls Family Falafel at the Jungle Skipper Canteen as they’ve hit the scene, this effort to organize information so it is easily accessible to interested guests will likely be a very welcome resource for many! We spotted the guide out in the open at the map kiosk in Liberty Square, but it is also available at dining locations around the park. For instance, we received one by request at Columbia Harbour House. Columbia Harbour House sign So, if you don’t spot one on your own, simply ask a Food & Beverage or Guest Relations Cast Member! Note: in speaking with Cast Members, they only knew the guide to be currently available in Magic Kingdom. But we’ll be on the lookout for the plant-based guide in other parks and will keep you posted! Don’t Miss Out on Any Disney Fun! The 2019 DFB Guide to Walt Disney World Dining is now available! Epcot’s Kringla Bakeri og Kafe tucked in the Norway Pavilion is known for classic Scandanavian offerings like Lefse and iconic treats like School Bread. Though the spot underwent a lengthy refurbishment last year, it returned with many of its tried-and-true favorites. Kringla Bakeri og Kafe So it’s always a bit of a surprise to find something new here, especially the so-colorful-you-can’t-help-but-notice-it Lemon Cheesecake! “Specialty Cake” Lemon Cheesecake Now, you’ll currently find this labeled simply as the Specialty Cake (available for $5.99 or a Disney Dining Plan snack credit), but the chocolate egg candies on top and cheerful spring pastels let you know this is a seasonal offering for spring. Lemon Cheesecake The top layer of frosting provides a “nest” of frosting for the chocolate eggs. Lemon Cheesecake The colorful layers of purple, blue, yellow, and pink are comprised of cheesecake with a bright lemon flavor to compliment the sweetness of the dessert. It all sits atop a tasty graham crust. Lemon Cheesecake What a fun springtime addition to the treats at Kringla! While you really can’t go wrong with any of the classics, it’s nice to see them having some fun and changing things up a bit in the bakery! In fact, this isn’t the only new treat we found at Kringla Bakeri og Kafe today, so stay tuned! Don’t Miss Out on Any Disney Fun! The 2019 DFB Guide to Walt Disney World Dining is now available! Epcot’s Fountain View is not just the place to get your Starbucks caffeine fix… Fountain View And while we’ve all known that ever since it opened, as the spot has always served up snacks and pastries — including classic Starbucks treats and unique-to-Disney snacks — today we were reminded of that fact when we spotted the Peanut Butter Mickey Tart in the bakery case! Peanut Butter Mickey Tart You may think you’ve seen this treat before… and that’s because the chocolate ganache Mickey Tart has been found at Resort counter service locations like BoardWalk Bakery for a long time. But the Peanut Butter Mickey Tart takes that adorable chocolate Mickey face over the classic Mickey-shaped tart… Peanut Butter Mickey Tart And fills it with a thick layer of peanut buttery goodness! Peanut Butter Mickey Tart A thin layer of chocolate ganache, though, is still indeed present. Peanut Butter Mickey Tart It presents a dark chocolate over the peanut butter cream which has a light texture while being rich with peanut butter flavor. Peanut Butter Mickey Tart The choice of dark chocolate lends a more adult flavor to the treat, while Mickey’s mug and the gooey texture still lets us feel like a kid while enjoying it! The Mickey Peanut Butter Tart is $4.79 or a Disney Dining Plan snack credit. Note that the specialty Disney snacks in Fountain View do tend to change with some frequency, so grab it while you can! Don’t know a Tauntaun from a Bantha? Have NO CLUE what a parsec is? Don’t worry — by the end of this post nobody’s gonna call you a scruffy-looking nerf herder! Entrance to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Hollywood Studios Let’s travel to a galaxy far, far away to get you up to speed on EVERYTHING you need to know before you head to Batuu. Where and When Are We? Ok, first things first — the Star Wars universe is HUGE with SO MANY different stories and plots taking place across thousands of years, so we’re just gonna break down the essentials for visiting Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland and Disney World (unless YOU wanna be here for thousands of years ). [NOTE: there are DEFINITELY some spoilers from ALL of the Star Wars films in here, but hey you’re the one looking for Star Wars cliff notes.] When you enter Galaxy’s Edge you’re walking into Black Spire Outpost, a village on the planet of Batuu that lies on the very edge of known space. Black Spire Outpost is a haven for smugglers and merchants looking to stay off the radar. Galaxy’s Edge Concept Art Galaxy’s Edge Story Line The story line of Galaxy’s Edge takes place after the events of The Last Jedi, or Episode 8 in the Star Wars saga, but before the yet-unnamed Episode 9 that will be released December 21, 2019. So, what does that mean? You’re not gonna find many characters from the original trilogy; there’s a war going on that’s resulted in A LOT of casualties (we’re talking Game of Thrones level death counts). Luke and Han Solo are definitely gone and Leia…we’re not quite sure how that will pan out in the next film (R.I.P. Princess ). You will spot Chewbacca and R2-D2 along with some characters from the new trilogy, like Rey, Finn, BB-8, Poe Dameron, and Kylo Ren. You’ll also come across plenty of Stormtroopers and members of the First Order (the bad guys) and members of the Resistance (the good guys!). The Bad Guys What’s there to do around here? Well, for starters, Black Spire Outpost is a marketplace — hope you brought your credit card (or Galactic Credits) because we’re goin’ shopping! The Toydarian Toymaker Stall — run by Zebaka who is a Toydarian (yep, it’s a species of alien AND a very on-the-nose shop name) — will feature artisan-style toys, while Bina’s Creature Stall is where you can pick up a new pet. By the way, a Tauntaun is that white fuzzy lizard creature that kind of resembles a kangaroo. You can find it on the ice planet in Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back. And a Bantha is a buffalo-looking creature that produces everyone’s favorite — blue milk! Bonus points to anyone who knows the internal temperature of a Tauntaun . A tauntaun’s internal temperature is “Luke-warm” You’ll also find a droid depot, a clothing shop (so you can dress the part of a Star Wars aficionado), a place to build your own lightsaber and Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. You’ll actually get to meet Dok-Ondar (or an animatronic version of him) and barter for some of the items in his collection. This guy is connected and basically runs the black market on Batuu, so tread carefully. Dok-Ondar Now, on to the food! You’re gonna find lots of galactic treats, including blue milk, in Galaxy’s Edge. The first stop on everyone’s list will likely be Oga’s Cantina. So, this isn’t the cantina featured in Star Wars: A New Hope and droids are allowed, but if you’ve seen one cantina you’ve seen ’em all! We don’t have a cantina band, but we do have a DJ! If you are a Star Wars and Disney nerd you might recognize DJ R-3X, originally known as RX-24 and a former character in Star Tours. Oga’s Cantina Concept Art ©Disney What do I need to know about Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run? The Millennium Falcon is a ship with a lot of history; it did make the Kessel Run in slightly more than 12 parsecs (12 parsecs if you round down). A parsec, by the way, is an astronomical measure of distance equivalent to 19 trillion miles, and the Kessel Run is basically a difficult-to-navigate “spice”-trade route. The Falcon is most famously piloted by Han Solo and Chewbacca, who acquired it during the events of Solo: A Star Wars Story (the Han Solo origin story and prequel to the “original” trilogy starting with A New Hope). In the new trilogy, Rey uses the now abandoned Falcon to escape Jakku, the desolate planet she grew up on as an orphan. ©Disney from @DisneyParks on Twitter After the Battle of Crait in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (the scene with all the ships kicking up red dust from the salt plains), the Millennium Falcon ends up at Black Spire Outpost after Chewbacca makes a deal with a character that fans of the Clone Wars series already know — Hondo Ohnaka. Hondo Ohnaka audio-animatronic This sassy space pirate, who has quite a history with Skywalker’s mentor Obi-wan Kenobi, is recruiting new members to help pilot the Millennium Falcon on a mission to transport some cargo. That’s right, you really get to pilot this famous ship! And with the non-traditional queue line, you’ll also be able to take in a round of Dejarik, a holographic chess game. Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run Dejarik Holochess Board ©Disney Parks How about Rise of the Resistance? Rise of the Resistance, opening with date-yet-to-be-announced “Phase 2” of Galaxy’s Edge, will bring that war we mentioned earlier front and center. The land of Galaxy’s Edge exists in the midst of a Galactic Civil War between the First Order and the Resistance and this ride drops you right in the action. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance ©Disney To explain our current bad guy line-up, let’s go back in the Star Wars timeline for some pre-Darth Vader recaps. Please hold for Star Wars flashbacks… A long time ago in…well the same piece of space we’ve been talking about this entire article, the Galactic Republic ruled over a peaceful galaxy, which was governed by an elected Senate with the Jedi Knights serving as dogmatic mediators. During the events of the prequel trilogy (Episodes 1-3, Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker’s origin story) the Sith, followers of the “dark side” of the force, quietly gain power by manipulating corruption and chaos in the Senate to get the Sith Lord elected as Supreme Chancellor. Once in power, the dark side destroyed the Jedi Order and formed the Galactic Empire, which governs with fear and intimidation. At this point, the Jedi Order is nearly forgotten and any remaining Jedi are viewed as zealots. This brings us up to the events of the original trilogy and the film that started it all, A New Hope. Star Wars: A New Hope ©Disney The original trilogy covers the birth of the Rebellion, the destruction of not one but two Death Stars (as well as the Galactic Empire), some family reunions and the establishment of the New Republic. Of course, the Empire isn’t completely gone and you guessed it — they’re planning another secret coup. The remnants of the Empire are now calling themselves the First Order and by the end of The Last Jedi, they’re led by Kylo Ren who — in case you missed it — is Han Solo and Leia’s son and turned to the dark side after a serious misunderstanding with his mentor Luke Skywalker. So, we’ve got the militaristic First Order pitted up against the “new Rebellion,” now calling themselves The Resistance and both of them have arrived in Black Spire Outpost. Resistance and First Order Cast Member Costumes ©Disney It’s worth noting that A LOT of other stuff happens in between the events of this seriously shortened recap — enough to fill 8 movies, 6 seasons of an animated TV show, and over 100 “George Lucas approved” books — but, how else are you gonna fit 3 generations of civil wars into a few paragraphs? Back to Batuu — did we mention that you can play along? It’s a good thing you just brushed up on all your Star Wars knowledge because YOU can be a part of the action! To say this new land is going to be interactive is probably a huge understatement. Every Cast Member will be in character and merchandise may not come bearing a Disney logo. Every single detail of Galaxy’s Edge is meant to convince you that you’re no longer in Southern California or Central Florida, but rather on an alien planet in a far off galaxy. One familiar piece of technology will help you interact with this strange land — your smartphone. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge on Play Disney Parks app ©Disney Using a smartphone and Disney’s Play Parks app guests can interact with droids, media screens, and door panels; intercept coded transmissions; and translate Aurebesh (that runic Star Wars language). You’ll also be able to accept jobs and complete tasks to aid either the First Order or the Resistance. Oh, and we hope your mission on the Millennium Falcon went well because you might run into a character that heard about your bumpy landing on Batuu. So, are you following the path of the Jedi or succumbing to the dark side of the force? You’ve only got a few months left to decide — Galaxy’s Edge opens in Disneyland May 31 and Walt Disney World August 29! Want MORE Details About Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge? Are you counting down the seconds until Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens in Walt Disney World on August 29, 2019? Spoiler alert: You’re not alone. Whether you plan to blast off to Batuu on opening day or you’re planning a visit a few months later, now is the time to prepare for the best possible Walt Disney World vacation. Entrance to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Hollywood Studios If you’re headed to Disney World for the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge there is a lot of planning that needs to happen between now and August 29 — including deciding what Disney World Resort Hotel is best for you. Lucky for you, our good friends at Small World Vacations have some suggestions on the BEST Disney World Hotels for your visit to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge! Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance ©Disney Picture this — it’s Galaxy’s Edge opening day and you want to be first in line! You don’t have to wait for a bus or deal with the INSANE traffic sure to be gumming up the roads around Disney’s Hollywood Studios! Just roll out of bed and WALK TO GALAXY’S EDGE! Yeah! It’s totally possible for that to BE YOUR LIFE! And also, after a full day of exploring out-of-this-world attractions and experiences at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, you’re part of the huge crowds leaving the park. But, instead of waiting a really long time for a bus (or even a Friendship Boat) you can take a leisurely stroll back to your Epcot-area Resort Hotel including Beach Club, Yacht Club, BoardWalk Inn, and the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin. Disney’s BoardWalk Inn Disney’s BoardWalk Inn is located on the shores of Crescent Lake and evokes memories of years gone by on the Atlantic Coast. At BoardWalk Inn you’ll find rooms and villas are available for 4 – 12 guests and include Garden or Water View rooms, Club Level with a Concierge Lounge, Deluxe Villas, or Garden Suites with a Jacuzzi tub. Stroll along the BoardWalk! Whether you’re staying at the BoardWalk Inn or just stopping by from another hotel, the Boardwalk is home to live entertainment, shopping, recreation, and more. You can also enjoy a variety of dining locations and lounges including Flying Fish, Trattoria al Forno, AbracadaBar, ESPN Club, Big River Grille & Brewing Works, Jellyrolls, and Atlantic Dance Hall. If you stay at the BoardWalk Inn or Deluxe Villas you can enjoy a day off from the parks and zip down the 200 foot-long Keister Coaster water slide at Luna Park Pool. Or enjoy the serene setting at the quiet pool near the Garden Suites. Guests can also enjoy the resort’s gym arcade, general store, and tennis courts. And don’t forget to rent a Surrey Bike on the Boardwalk! The BoardWalk Inn is just a short walk away from Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and the rest of Hollywood Studios! Disney Yacht and Beach Club Resorts Disney’s Yacht Club, Beach Club, and Beach Club Villas are located across Crescent Lake from the BoardWalk Inn offering nautical and seashore themes, and like the BoardWalk Inn are fantastic locations if you’re headed to Hollywood Studios! Disney’s Yacht Club Resort Guests of the Yacht and Beach Club Resorts can enjoy Stormalong Bay – arguably the best pool on Disney property – featuring a lazy river, pirate ship water slide, and sandy bottom. You can also rent a new poolside cabana! Scroll down to see a special offer from Small World Vacations for your next Disney World Trip! After a day at the parks you can relax in the spa or work out in the gym. Dining locations at Yacht and Beach Club include Beaches and Cream (which is closing for refurbishment this summer), Yachtsman Steakhouse, Ale and Compass, and an all-you-care-to-eat New England Clam Bake at dinnertime at Cape May Café. Daydreaming about a swim in Stormalong Bay? At Yacht Club and Beach Club rooms and villas are available for 4 – 12 guests and include Garden or Water View rooms, Club Level with a Concierge Lounge, Deluxe Villas, and more. Thinking about an Epcot-area hotel? A Small World Vacations agent can check for possible discounts at the BoardWalk Inn, Yacht Club, or Beach Club and provide you with a no-obligation price quote. Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotels are also located in the Crescent Lake/Epcot area. And while they are technically located on Disney property, they are not owned or operated by Disney. Stay at the Swan and Dolphin The amenities and services at the Swan and Dolphin are very similar to the Disney Deluxe Resorts and include Extra Magic Hours. Guests at the Swan and Dolphin can also book their FastPass+ selections 60 days before arrival. Guests at the Swan and Dolphin do not receive a complimentary MagicBand nor do they receive complimentary transportation on Disney’s Magical Express from Orlando International Airport to the resort. But just like the BoardWalk Inn and Yacht and Beach Clubs, the Swan and Dolphin are within walking distance of Hollywood Studios (and Epcot)! BoardWalk Area Resorts and Disney Festivals In addition to being NOT so far, far away from Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, these resorts are also within walking distance to Epcot. The Epcot-area hotels are a convenient location if you’re making plans to attend one or more of the festivals held at Epcot throughout the year including the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival, Epcot Food and Wine Festival, Epcot Festival of the Holidays, and Epcot Festival of the Arts. This year, the Epcot Food and Wine Festival runs from August 29 – November 23, 2019 – which means it opens on the same day that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens! And remember – the new Disney Skyliner is also opening this fall – and you’ll be able to take the Skyliner from Epcot to Hollywood Studios, too! All of this means NOW more than ever is the BEST time to make plans to visit Walt Disney World! NOTE: Our friends at Small World Vacations want to remind everyone that capacity for Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and its experiences may be limited when it initially opens. Access to the park, Galaxy’s Edge, and related experiences may be restricted or unavailable depending on guest demand and other factors. The second phase of the land, including the Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance attraction, is slated to open later in the year. Do you need help planning your next Disney World vacation? Hey there from Sunset Ranch Market in Disney’s Hollywood Studios! Today we are bringing you an all-new review from Fairfax Fare! Sunset Ranch Market In the past, Fairfax Fare focused on Barbecue classics like smoked ribs and chicken; but now, their menu consists of “Tex-mex” choices like tamales, rice bowls, and fajitas. But don’t worry — if you want barbecue during your day in Hollywood, you can grab a huge plate of tasty ribs at the ABC Commissary. Ribs at ABC Commissary We also love the BBQ Brisket Melt from Woody’s Lunchbox in Toy Story Land! BBQ Brisket Melt at Woody;’s Lunchbox But back to the restaurant at hand! Atmosphere Fairfax Fare Fairfax Fare is located at the end of Sunset Boulevard, near the Tower of Terror and across from the entrance to the Hollywood Hills Amphitheater, where you can catch Fantasmic! As mentioned before, it is part of the Sunset Ranch Market — which is comprised of other walk-up locations such as Rosie’s All American Cafe and Catalina Eddie’s. These locations all share a common outdoor seating area and condiment stations. Seating at Sunset Ranch Market There isn’t anything fancy about the theming, or most of the food honestly, at Sunset Ranch Market, however it’s a good spot to go if you’ve got a large group who all want different things for lunch or dinner! Eats As we said, the menu at Fairfax Fare features a variety of “Tex-mex” style entrees. Most of them are made up of the same key ingredients, but served in different fashions. Fairfax Fare Menu — Click to Enlarge Today we decided to try the Pork Tamales and the 7-Layer Rice Bowl with Chicken. Though in the past we have LOVED the Fairfax Salad! 7-Layer Rice Bowl and Pork Tamales Up first, the 7-Layer Rice Bowl. You can choose from pork or chicken — or a combo of both — for this entree. You can also add guacamole for $1, which I did because guacamole is delicious. 7-Layer Rice Bowl and Guacamole The bowl is a hearty serving of cilantro rice and black beans, and topped with your choice of meat, a fire-roasted corn medley, pico de gallo, and sour cream and cheddar cheese. Rice Bowl Close Up This is incredibly tasty! It may not look like a huge serving initially, but there is plenty of chicken and beans which prove to be very filling. The toppings are plentiful as well, and the pico de gallo is nice and fresh. I also really loved the fire-roasted corn salsa which has a distinct grill flavor. Rice Bowl The side of guacamole is generous as well! You get a very substantial portion for $1, which honestly, could probably be shared between two people. Unless you’re a guacamole monster like I am, in which case it’s very worth the dollar to eat it all by yourself. Next, we tried the Pork Tamales. Pork Tamales with Beans These are Pork Tamales topped with Ranchero sauce, fresh Mexican cheese, cilantro, and sour cream, and are served with cilantro rice and black beans on the side. If you’re a tamale enthusiast, you know they are typically served where you have to open the corn husks yourself. However, here Disney has taken the work out of the dish, and the tamales are served where no peeling is required. Pork Tamales Close Up These were FANTASTIC. The tamale itself is a nice consistency, and a good balance between the pork and the cornmeal. But the real star here is the Ranchero sauce! It’s got a lot of good flavor and heat — actual heat not just “Disney heat”! The spice is nicely balanced with the sour cream and generous serving of queso fresco as well. I could’ve eaten at least two servings of these — and wish I would’ve asked for extra sauce for the rice bowl. Overall Typically the spots at Sunset Ranch Market don’t top our list in Hollywood Studios. They are solid choices with a convenient location, but they don’t normally blow us away flavor wise. Plus, all outdoor seating is kind of THE PITS in central Florida most of the time. But, we were pleasantly surprised by Fairfax Fare! Both dishes we tried were full of flavor and very filling! They were also a tad bit lighter than the fried options at Rosie’s — so if you’re looking for something healthy-ish this is a great option. Plus, I am already excited to go back and put that Ranchero Sauce on everything. Don’t Miss Out on Any Disney Fun! The 2019 DFB Guide to Walt Disney World Dining is now available!
