Do you remember the Unicorn Cupcake from Disney’s All Star Music Resort? This Intermission Food Court cupcake gem has stood the test of time due to its eye-catching appearance (‘cuz, UNICORNS) and super fun surprise filling. Unicorn Cupcake But this fan favorite treat has just received a bit of a makeover, so we wanted to check it out. Unicorn Cupcake The cone horn and chocolate discs still provide the garnishes. Unicorn Cupcake But while a rainbow of colors is still the signature feature of the icing, it is now strawberry lemonade flavored! Unicorn Cupcake But what about the most memorable part of the Unicorn Cupcake… the bunches of multi-hued sprinkles that come tumbling out of the center upon digging in? Unicorn Cupcake They’re still there! Whew! Unicorn Cupcake The strawberry lemonade flavor is a fun and unexpected twist from the previous vanilla buttercream. And it serves as a reminder to expect the unexpected these days — from Character Icon cupcakes to takes on classic ice cream sundaes — when it comes to cupcakes at Disney’s All Star Music Resort! With the opening date for the live-action Aladdin film quickly approaching, we have started to notice new treats, like the Aladdin-inspired Milkshake at Disney Springs, the Aladdin cupcake at Saratoga Springs, and the Wish Granted donut in Magic Kingdom. ©Disney And the Aladdin craze seems to be continuing as we have also spotted a TON of new merchandise at Walt Disney World and Disneyland this week. The new merchandise ranges from towels, t-shirts, plush, and more! At Disney World Fly on over to a relaxing resort pool with the Aladdin Magic Carpet beach towel. The towel is $26.99 and can be found at Disney World or online at shopDisney.com. Magic Carpet Beach Towel Have you ever wanted your very own Genie lamp? I know I have! Well, our wish-making time has come as Disney is selling a limited edition Genie lamp! There are only 4,000 of these guys and they’re $149.99. Fingers crossed that this one really works because I could really use three magic wishes! Genie Lamp Speaking of Genie’s Magic Lamp, you can also buy a cheaper option. Disney is also selling a tea set complete with a Genie’s lamp teapot and two demitasse teacups for $65. Tea Set There is also an even LESS-expensive, more kid-friendly version of the tea set seen above. The set has nine pieces and includes a teapot, teacups, and plates. Tea Set Disney also released a ton of adorable Aladdin kiddo merchandise, like the Jasmine t-shirts seen below! Jasmine t-shirt Jasmine t-shirt BUT Disney didn’t stop there. We also saw one of the most gorgeous and intricate Jasmine costumes EVER. The costume is beautifully stitched in gold and has stunning beading on the entire costume. Jasmine Costume Just look at all of the insanely pretty details. Your little one will totally feel like true Disney royalty in this costume. Jasmine Costume It even comes in its own hanging bag, so you know that it will be kept safe for the travels back home. Jasmine Costume This is a limited edition Jasmine costume and Disney is only selling 4,500 of them for $169.99. Jasmine Costume We saw another Aladdin t-shirt as well featuring Abu, our favorite little monkey, and Genie’s Magic Lamp! Abu t-shirt And guys we also found the cutest little Aladdin’s Magic Carpet keychain. Now you can soar with Aladdin wherever you go! Magic Carpet Keychain And we also saw two new Aladdin plush toys! Abu Plush Both Abu and Raja have made their way to Disney World! Raja Plush We found all of this merchandise at Mouse Gear in Epcot, though we suspect many of these merchandise options will keep popping up in other locations throughout the parks. While at Mouse Gear don’t forget to also check out the Jasmine Minnie Ears. At Disneyland And just when we thought we’d seen all the Aladdin merchandise in the world, we spotted entirely different Aladdin merch in Disneyland! (But don’t worry; we suspect you’ll find everything in this post on both coasts eventually.) Aladdin Merchandise First off, we found a few more Jasmine kiddo options. And the best part about them is that you and your little ones can match! Aladdin Kid Jackets Both jackets are a metallic blue and have gorgeous stitching details that feature Jasmine’s trusty sidekick Raja. The Raja bomber jacket can also be found on shopDisney.com. Aladdin Jacket Both jackets have the same stitching details. Raja stitching But the Aladdin bomber jacket kiddo version has a pattern on the entire jacket. The girl’s jacket can also be found on shopDisney.com. Kid Aladdin Jacket We also found some different t-shirt options in Disneyland. The tank below is the perfect way for adults to sport a Jasmine look while in the parks. Jasmine Tank Top Do you just love Genie? Well, we also found a Genie t-shirt with the Will Smith version of Genie screen-printed on the front for $34.99. Aladdin Genie T-Shirt Disney is also selling an Aladdin tanktop that has the original movie version of the characters on the front. Aladdin Tank This is actually the original artwork from the VHS cover of the film. You can get this tank in Disneyland for $34.99, but it’s going fast! Aladdin Tank And last but certainly not least, we found an all-new Danielle Nicole Magic Carpet purse. Aladdin Danielle Nicole Aren’t the details stunning? Aladdin Danielle Nicole Purse And when you flip it around, it looks just like Aladdin’s Magic Carpet. We LOVE the richer colors on the purse! You can also find the Magic Carpet Bag on shopDisney.com. We’ve got another cupcake from Intermission Food Court at Disney’s All Star Music Resort for you today. We just reviewed the current Character Icon cupcake (a tribute to Aladdin‘s Genie), and now we’re back for the Banana Split Cupcake. Banana Split Cupcake This one has graced the bakery case at Intermission Food Court for a little while now, so since it appears to be something of a hit we grabbed it on our recent visit. Those layers of buttercream you see on the top are not simply for show. The different colors of icing are actually different flavors, too: chocolate on top, vanilla in the middle, and strawberry on the bottom to resemble the classic dessert sundae! Banana Split Cupcake And, of course, no banana split is complete without sprinkles and a cherry on top! Underneath it all, a yellow cake base features not only banana filling, but we even found a huge chunk of banana tucked inside. Banana Split Cupcake This cupcake really delivers on its Banana Split theme, and fans of the classic dessert will love this fun cupcake twist! And if you’re one of those fans, you’ll want to know that the Banana Split Cupcake is $5.49 or a Disney Dining Plan snack credit. Don’t Miss Out on Any Disney Fun! Who’s ready for a cupcake break?! Genie Magic Lamp Cupcake You know we at the DFB are always up for one, and a really terrific place to find cupcakes as of late is Intermission Food Court in Disney World’s All Star Music Resort, thanks to their monthly-rotating Character Icon cupcakes. The current Character Icon cupcake, is — like many other snacks around Disney World recently — inspired by the upcoming Aladdin live action film. This particular cupcake appears to take its inspiration from Genie himself! Genie Magic Lamp Cupcake A nice, moist chocolate cake base is covered in vividly hued frosting. The blue frosting is blue raspberry flavored (it’s uber sweet, and tastes a lot like cotton candy), while the black and yellow is basic vanilla buttercream. Genie Magic Lamp Cupcake And you really need to be a fan of oodles and oodles of sweet frosting, because inside the cupcake is… Genie Magic Lamp Cupcake LOTS MORE OF IT! The Genie Cupcake is $5.99 (or a Disney Dining Plan snack credit). Remember, this isn’t the only Aladdin-inspired sweet treat to hit the scene lately! From the Magic Lamp Milkshake to the Wish Granted Donut to the Aladdin-inspired Petit Cake, there is no shortage of ways to celebrate the beloved characters of Aladdin! The College is creating a new campus in downtown Orlando and, with this boost from Disney, it will feature state-of-the-art classrooms and cutting-edge technology for students. The campus will serve as the heart of Valencia’s culinary arts and hospitality programming, offering degree programs, certificates, and workforce training. As the program evolves, Disney will continue investing in students by lending our award-winning chefs to engage with the school in a variety of ways. This $1.5 million donation will not only enhance the education experience for local culinary and hospitality students, it will add an exciting new flavor to Downtown Orlando’s burgeoning hub for education. The Valencia College Downtown Campus, a shared campus with the University of Central Florida, will open to students for the fall 2019 semester and serve the downtown Orlando community to improve countless lives through the power of affordable education. Mom. We would not be here without her, and if your plans call for spending Mother’s Day with her at the Walt Disney World Resort or the Disneyland Resort, our panelists have some magical ideas to help celebrate your mom! Disney Parks Moms Panelist Anne knows exactly what she would do if she were enjoying her special day at Walt Disney World. “My practically perfect Mother’s Day would have to include a specialty cruise for myself and my family. I can think of nothing better than a leisurely cruise around Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake surrounded by family, topped off with a fantastic view of “Happily Ever After,” the Magic Kingdom fireworks spectacular,” she described with a wishful tone in her voice. “A specialty cake from one of the amazing Walt Disney World bakeries served on-board would top off the evening.” If you are looking for a Mother Daughter outing, Robyn has a perfect personal recommendation. “Afternoon Tea at the Garden View Tea Room at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa was such a special experience for me to share with my daughter. We dressed up and had such a lovely time talking and enjoying our tea and treats! It’s a memory I’ll always cherish.” Desiree also loves the idea of a mother and child outing at Amorette’s Patisserie. “A cake decorating class led by one of their awesome pastry chefs would create magical memories to hold on to for years!” Disneyland panelist Tony knows how he will be celebrating his wife this Mother’s Day, and all you dads might want to take note…he’s got a great plan! “Often, vacations revolve around making memories for the kids. But this Mother’s Day, we plan to leave the kids behind for a magical getaway for two at the Disneyland Resort. This will be a time to focus on my wife, to show her my appreciation for all the amazing things she does for our family.” No matter how you plan on celebrating your mom, we want to say Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there. And if you are planning a Disney getaway for your mom, please be sure to visit DisneyParksMomsPanel.com for answers to all your Disney vacation questions. Amorette’s Patisserie is known for pulling out all the stops when it comes to artfully decorated pastries, but the new Aladdin Petit really takes the… umm, CAKE! Aladdin Petit Cake And when Disney Springs announced the arrival of this “shining, shimmering, splendid” cake, we knew we had to try it. Just look at this beauty! From the shining golden Magic Lamp to the Magic Carpet placed on top to the hue of Jasmine’s outfit with the icing, this one really nails the theme. Aladdin Petit Cake Of course, the cake underneath the icing is certainly important, too. Almond Chiffon Cake is layered with Amoretto Simple Syrup, Fig Pate de Fruit, 5 Spice mousse, Almond Pecan Granola, and Golden Raisin Jam. Aladdin Petit Cake The flavors are certainly unique compared to your typical sweet cake. But that’s not to say there isn’t sweetness involved; in fact, the icing is very sweet, but it’s nicely balanced by the 5 spice mousse. Aladdin Petit Cake The granola adds an unexpected crunch while the almond cake itself is both moist and flavorful. That is to say, there is a LOT going on here. But it works… and works beautifully, at that. The Aladdin Petit Cake is $16.00, and you’ll currently find it at Amorette’s Patisserie in Disney Springs. Don’t Miss Out on Any Disney Fun! Disneyland in California and Disneyland Paris are getting superhero-themed lands, and Hong Kong Disneyland is getting a Marvel-themed ride. But even with copious development in Walt Disney World, the only major Marvel Comics-related growth is Epcot’s Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster. There’s no Spider Man, Iron Man, Captain America, or big green Hulk in sight. Concept art for the superhero land coming to Disney California Adventure ©Disney So why no love for Marvel at Walt Disney World? Believe it or not, the answer goes back about twenty-five years and all hinges on a licensing agreement loophole. Universal Studios, as you may have guessed if you’re a fan of their hero-themed rides and entertainment, retained the rights to the Marvel characters in an agreement signed in 1994 between Marvel and MCA (which would eventually become part of NBC Universal). But there were two caveats. One: Universal had to actually use the characters to retain control over them, and Two: the agreement split the country down the middle, and the rules applied separately to the areas east and west of the Mississippi River. Universal Studios Long story long, when Disney inherited this licensing agreement, they also inherited a dilemma. Florida’s Universal Studios — east of the Mississippi — uses many Marvel characters, and that means Disney can not. (Universal Studios Hollywood — west of the Mississippi — does not use Marvel characters, which is why Disneyland is free to do so.) The net result is that Walt Disney World is severely limited in how it can use Marvel characters. To this point, the only major use of Marvel in the Florida parks is Guardians of the Galaxy in Epcot, where a roller coaster is in progress in the park’s Future World and where Guardians of the Galaxy — Awesome Mix Live! will take the stage again in World Showcase this summer. Guardians of the Galaxy — Awesome Mix Live! ©Disney Classic characters like the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, and Captain America won’t be saving the day at Walt Disney World any time soon, but Marvel does have a place with Disney Cruise Line, which features the characters in its Marvel Day at Sea. International waters are apparently not part of the East/West agreement. But the licensing dilemma doesn’t end completely at Disney World’s doorstep because there is one more interesting restriction: the Disney parks (and Universal) can not use the name Marvel in an attraction name or in an attraction’s marketing. This restriction is expected to remain in place and apply to the California Adventure Park’s land itself, meaning we shouldn’t expect to see Disneyland’s superhero-themed land called Marvel Land as it’s been nicknamed by the media. Superhero Land Poster ©Disney So will we ever see these popular Marvel characters at Walt Disney World? For now, “we [don’t] have a Hulk”… but never say never! And when you’re kids are confused as to why they’ll see Spiderman in Disneyland and also at Universal Studios Orlando…that’s why! Don’t Miss Out on Any Disney Fun! Frontera Cocina by Chef Rick Bayless in Walt Disney World’s Disney Springs crafts fresh Mexican cuisine that reflects the diversity of the nation’s culinary traditions. And fresh at Frontera Cocina means updating menus seasonally. (See the previous menus, including a Taste of Oaxaca, here!) Frontera Cocina Our most recent visit gave us a chance to taste several items from the table service spot’s new Seasonal and Taste of Baja menus. We start with cocktails, some of which certainly feature some interesting ingredients! Selections include choices from both the regular Cocktails menu and the Taste of Baja Menu. Cocktail Menu Frontera Cocina Baja Menu The Vuelve a la Vida is from the Taste of Baja menu and consists of Pacifico draft beer, tequila El Velo blanco, lime juice, house-made mix and hot sauce served with a candied bacon strip and avocado slice. Vuelve a la Vida This slightly spicy drink hits on some interesting flavors with the candied bacon garnish, in particular. And while we’re not generally fans of mixing beer and liquor, the Vuelve a la Vida will be appreciated by those who like the idea of combining beer with a Bloody Mary. Vuelve a la Vida The spicy rim is a great addition, but the slice of avocado is a little strange. This was not our favorite drink, but we know plenty of folks enjoy a loaded Bloody Mary, and this would be great for them. Vuelve a la Vida Also from the Taste of Baja menu, Ni Maiz is the drink that most had us scratching our heads. Baby corn… in a cocktail? But our server recommended this drink to accompany one of the Seasonal menu items (Esquites Ensalada — more on that in a minute!), so we had to give it a try. The drink is comprised of Mezcal Ilegal espadin blanco, corn juice, Licor 43, lemon, and agave nectar, and it was a little sweet and a little smoky. Ni Maiz Upon reviewing the ingredients, we’d like to point out that baby corn isn’t even the most eyebrow-raising item. That award goes to the spicy worm salt rim, which we found to be quite sour and not a good combination with the smoky drink. We liked both components on their own, but together the rim was overpowering. Ni Maiz La Baja Clasica is another really interesting drink. (That seems to be a theme at Frontera: drinks utilizing uncommon ingredients.) It consists of El Mayor tequila añejo, key lime juice, agave nectar and Sherry wine, and it’s rimmed with tortilla ash salt. The tortilla ash salt has a totally unique flavor, and once we adjusted to it, we loved this drink! La Baja Clasica La Baja Clasica strikes a good balance of sour (from the key lime) and sweet (from the agave nectar). This balance made it our favorite cocktail of the night! La Baja Clasica Our server recommended this drink to accompany the entrees because of the sherry in it. And we agree: it was a clean, fresh drink to go with the super-savory dishes. La Baja Clasica From the regular menu comes the new-ish Cucumber Negroni. First, before we even talk about what’s in this drink, take note of the branded ice cube! It’s super fun, and it kept its form throughout the meal. Love this detail! Cucumber Negroni The Cucumber Negroni is comprised of Mezcal illegal blanco, Italicus liqueur, dry vermouth, cucumber bitters, and grapefruit peel. The cucumber bitters made this drink less bitter than other negronis we’ve tried, and that made it even more drinkable. Our server suggested this drink as a palate cleanser, and we agreed it served that purpose. Cucumber Negroni Also note that Frontera Cocina is using agave straws in place of single-use plastic. Agave Straw Agave Straw Our server informed us that these straws are so well constructed that they can actually be washed and reused in addition to being biodegradable. Agave Straw And in fact, we really liked this straw option — probably better than any of the other biodegradable straws we’ve tried thus far. It did maintain its shape, and it was smooth like a plastic straw, so there aren’t any texture issues. We first became aware of agave straws at Epcot’s La Cava del Tequila, and we’d love to see these used elsewhere, too! Agave Straw Now that we’re hydrated, let’s take a look at the Seasonal Menu and the Taste of Baja Menu. Frontera Cocina has been introducing two menus simultaneously, with the Seasonal typically having just a few items and the regional “Taste of” menus having several. Seasonal Menu The Taste of Baja Menu includes a little snippet from Chef Rick Bayless that asserts “Northern Baja is delicious beyond belief… rustic and perfectly in step with what we all love to eat.” Frontera Cocina Baja Menu We started with the Taste of Baja’s Crispy Chipotle Calamari. It comes with caramelized lime aioli, chile de arbol salsa, Cotija cheese, and fresh tortillas. Crispy Chipotle Calamari We loved this starter, and for those looking to eat a little lighter, it would also make a nice, small entree with the tortillas. The spices on the calamari were a bit smoky but didn’t overpower the delicate squid, which was soft and not at all chewy. Crispy Chipotle Calamari The chile de arbol salsa was a spicy condiment that had a lot of heat on its own. Crispy Chipotle Calamari The caramelized lime aioli had a lovely creaminess and was slightly tart from the lime. (You can see a caramelized lime on the plate, too, which was really nice when squeezed onto the calamari.) Crispy Chipotle Calamari Our server recommended we build a fish taco with the fresh tortillas and a mixture of the two sauces. This is definitely the way to go. Tortillas The spicy salsa and the creamy aioli complemented each other really well, and the crispy calamari was a satisfying textural component. We would absolutely get this again and hope it somehow sticks around beyond the life of the Taste of Baja Menu. Crispy Chipotle Calamari Crispy Chipotle Calamari The Esquites Ensalada is from the Seasonal Menu, and the freshness of this dish comes through right away. Not to mention that color! It consists of Arcadian lettuce, grilled sweet corn, spicy cotija cheese, poblano rajas, tortilla strips, and roasted garlic lime dressing. Esquites Ensalada We actually love the salads at Frontera Cocina, and this one delivered in flavor and texture. It had a little of everything going on: sweet from the corn, spicy from the cotija, and that dressing! SO good! Esquites Ensalada We loved the tortilla strips on top, which added some great crunch, too. We heartily recommend this salad if you are a salad junkie or just looking to add some fiber to your Disney dining. Esquites Ensalada The Carne Asada with Mojo Grilled Florida Shrimp is a super-filling option big enough to share. The base is garlic and red chile-marinated Creekstone Natural Black Angus steak. That’s topped with mojo-grilled Florida Pink Shrimp and served with sides of black beans refritos with queso fresco, caramelized plantains with crema and Cotija cheese, tomatillo salsa, and warm corn tortillas. Carne Asada and Mojo Grilled Florida Shrimp These are sustainable Florida Pink Shrimp, and they were fresh beyond compare. We loved how flavorful and fresh they were. Carne Asada and Mojo Grilled Florida Shrimp The mojo seasoning on the shrimp is tasty, but that steak is out of this world! So while we loved the shrimp, it plays second fiddle here, and that’s saying something. Carne Asada and Mojo Grilled Florida Shrimp The garlic and red chile-marinated steak is an incredible piece of meat. The flavors come through with strength, and it’s just straight-up delicious. This plate of food without the shrimp (although they were good!) would be just as satisfying. Carne Asada and Mojo Grilled Florida Shrimp We also enjoyed the sides. The plantains were particularly good, with some nice creaminess and starchiness that partnered well with the steak. Carne Asada and Mojo Grilled Florida Shrimp Carne Asada and Mojo Grilled Florida Shrimp The salsa was unnecessary, but still good. It added the only really botanical flavor to the plate, and even though it wasn’t expressly needed, the contrast was pleasant. Carne Asada and Mojo Grilled Florida Shrimp The black bean refritos were a nice texture and carried some decent, salty flavor. But overall, but the steak is so good that it’s what we’ll remember most — it’s a great dish. Carne Asada and Mojo Grilled Florida Shrimp For a shrimp-forward dish, you can go with the Grilled Florida Pink Shrimp. And while these little crustaceans were terrific, it all hinged on that amazing red chile-peanut macha salsa on top. Grilled Florida Pink Shrimp The salsa imparted tons of spice — in a good way. It left a tingling sensation without muting the flavors of the dish, and that’s not an easy balance to achieve. The cilantro on top is a bit of a throwaway (especially if you’re cilantro-averse), but that fresh shrimp! Grilled Florida Pink Shrimp Point of fact, even with as good as the Carne Asada was in the previous dish, this shrimp was actually better — and the Grilled Florida Pink Shrimp was our favorite entree of the night! Grilled Florida Pink Shrimp The plantain rice did provide a little respite from the heat and made this dish hearty without being too heavy. Grilled Florida Pink Shrimp We also tried two desserts, one each from the new menus. Our favorite was the Taste of Baja Menu’s Raspberry-Habanero Cake. And yes, that’s candied habanero pepper on top, and it is amazing! We could’ve stood to have even more on there, it was so good. Rapberry-Habanero Cake It was noticeably spicy, but paired with the smooth, cool creaminess of the lime chantilly cream, it was beautiful. We also really loved that lime in the chantilly cream; it made a huge difference in the brightness of the cake. Rapberry-Habanero Cake The raspberry is more subtle, like a compote between layers of sponge cake that soaked into the layers of cake. It’s really the combo of pepper and cream that makes this a highlight of the entire meal. Rapberry-Habanero Cake For a purely refreshing end to the meal, though, the Seasonal Menu’s Passion Fruit Sorbet is a great option. Passion Fruit Sorbet This is light and bright, and after eating some heavier dishes, it was a welcome way to close out the evening. Passion Fruit Sorbet Frontera Concina is a hidden gem (pardon the cliche), and, we’re finding these Seasonal and “Taste of” menus to be really thoughtful and delicious. There wasn’t a bad dish on the menu on our visit, and while we kind of want to keep this dining secret to ourselves, we also know it deserves to be celebrated.
