Welcome to our weekly roundup of What’s New at Epcot! Let’s Go To Epcot! Of course, Epcot is ALL THE TALK today since the MENUS have been released for the 2019 Epcot Food and Wine Festival! But while the Festival doesn’t kick off until August 29th, there are all sorts of things to explore in the Park right now, so let’s get started! What’s New in Epcot’s Future World In food news, we found quite a few changes to Coral Reef Restaurant’s menu! New menu items include a Seared Sea Scallops appetizer, Crispy Fried Shrimp appetizer, Mushroom Lobster-style Salad appetizer (their current seasonal salad), Lobster Seafood Boil, Grilled Vegetable Skewer, Grilled Swordfish, Snow Crab Legs enhancement, Baileys Almond and Jack Daniel’s Mousse dessert, and a Seasonal Cheesecake dessert. Coral Reef Menu Items removed from the menu are the Spinach and Ricotta Ravioli appetizer (this was soooo good!), Crispy Rhode Island Calamari appetizer, Whole Lobster, Tempura Fried Cauliflower, Seared Sustainable Salmon Fillet, 10-ounce Grilled Bone-in Pork Chop, Jonah Crab Claw enhancement, Warm Vanilla Custard-filled Strudel dessert, and the Turtle Cheesecake dessert. In Future World construction news, the Guardians of the Galaxy Coaster continues to progress. The attraction is scheduled to open in 2021, and we sure wish 2021 would get here faster! Guardians of the Galaxy Coaster Construction Guardians of the Galaxy Coaster Construction Construction on the space-themed restaurant also continues to move forward. There’s still lots of scaffolding on the exterior, but there’s no way to know how far along they may be on the interiors. Nevertheless, we are so ready for this exciting restaurant to open later this year! Space-themed Restaurant Construction Good (?) news, parents: Future World’s splash pad has reopened! We couldn’t spot a visual change to the splash pad, so we think it was refurbished for mechanical purposes. Either way, we’re sure the kiddos are enjoying it in Orlando’s summer heat! (On a related note, you may want to back a back-up outfit and shoes for Epcot if your kids are splash pad aficionados!) Future World Splash Pad What’s New in Epcot’s World Showcase In World Showcase food news, the Rose and Crown Beer Stand added a Ploughman’s Lunch for $13.75! Overall, we were really pleased with this new menu item and think it’d make a lovely snack or light meal. Click here to read our review! Ploughman’s Lunch Note that the Ploughman’s Lunch is not Disney Dining Plan eligible, and the price does not include a beverage. Ploughman’s Lunch Sign Meanwhile in construction news, Takumi-Tei continues to progress in the Japan Pavilion. The new signature restaurant will open THIS SUMMER and celebrate the elements of nature. Takumi-Tei Construction The menu board is still empty, but hopefully we’ll get to sneak a peek at the menu soon! Takumi-Tei Construction Over in the Canada Pavilion, we noticed the addition of more scaffolding on the rock wall near Le Cellier. We assume the scaffolding is there for maintenance purposes, but we’ll keep you posted if we learn anything different! Canada Pavilion Construction in the France Pavilion continues to progress as well. We are all (im)patiently awaiting the new Crêperie and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure! I can’t decide what I’m more excited about: delicious crepes or Disney World’s first trackless dark ride. Both are slated to open in time for Disney World’s 50th-anniversary celebration in 2021, so for now we’ll have to keep watching the progress from afar! France Pavilion Construction What’s New in Epcot’s Shops and Stores — New Merchandise! It’s time for one of our favorite things: new merchandise! In Mouse Gear, we found a trio of Farewell IllumiNations phone cases. The 3-D effect phone case is $34.99, while the Mickey and Figment cases are each $29.99. Farewell IllumiNations Phone Cases Farewell IllumiNations Phone Case Farewell IllumiNations Phone Case Farewell IllumiNations Phone Case Also new to us were several Minnie in Paris items in Souvenirs de France! We spotted a Bonjour Paris! shirt ($34.99), a tote bag ($34.99), a smaller bag ($17.99), a hat ($27.99), and a Minnie Bow beret ($26.99)! Bonjour Paris! Shirt Minnie in Paris Tote Minnie in Paris Bag Minnie in Paris Hat Minnie in Paris Beret And now we bid you au revoir from Epcot! Thanks for joining us on our Park walk, and stay tuned to Disney Food Blog for more news from the Disney Parks and Resorts. Which Farewell IllumiNations phone case is your favorite? Boozy popsicles seem to be a new Disney World trend, with refreshment Cocktail Pops in Italy in Epcot’s World Showcase and Buzz Pops at Paddlefish in Disney Springs. And now these grown-up popsicles have made their way to Pizza Ponte in Disney Springs as well! Pizza Ponte Wine Pop The good news here is that the new Pizza Ponte popsicles we’re checking out today are made by the same brand (Pop Fusions) as the popsicles being served in the Italy pavilion at Epcot. You can see why that’s a VERY good thing by reading about the Italy Cocktail Popsicles out here. There are a couple of MAJOR differences though, the biggest of them being the price. Pizza Ponte Wine Pops Pop Fusions Wine Pops are $12-$13 in Italy, but they’re only $5-$9 at Pizza Ponte! Hello, saving money on our frozen alcohol! Get your Wine Pop at Pizza Ponte! The other difference between the Pizza Ponte and Epcot options is the flavors. In Italy we found Limoncello (a Via Napoli exclusive), Sparkling Strawberry, and Berry Sangria. Pizza Ponte also serves the Sparkling Strawberry and Berry Sangria (at the lower price), and they also sell White Sangria, Mango Mimosa, and Back Porch Peach. Bonus: Pizza Ponte also has a lot more non-alcoholic fruit pop options to choose from as well. Pizza Ponte Wine Pops We tried the White Sangria and Back Porch Peach alcoholic options as well as the Chocolate Covered Strawberry non-alcoholic option. First of all, how enticing are they in these bright colors? Pizza Ponte Wine Pops The Back Porch Peach pop is $9, and we could really taste the peach flavor. The texture screamed FRESH fruit pop. Though we couldn’t taste much of an alcohol flavor — they’re less than 5% alcohol — the popsicle was very refreshing. Pizza Ponte Peach Wine Pop When it came to the White Sangria Popsicle ($9) we were a bit confused because we thought we were eating the peach popsicle again! Still tasty, of course, but the flavor was very similar. Pizza Ponte White Sangria Pop The Chocolate Covered Strawberry Popsicle ($5) is a standard fresh fruit pop. It was super yummy, though it was a little difficult to eat since the chocolate portion broke off more and more with each bite so that we ended up with big chunks of chocolate separate from the strawberry pop. (We admit: not a bad problem to have, really.) But the flavor was delicious, and it was yet another refreshing option. Pizza Ponte Chocolate Covered Strawberry Wine Pop These pops — wine or otherwise — have been delicious pretty much across the board. And with summer temperatures creeping higher and higher, ’tis the season for some ice pops! We happen to be big fans of these frozen boozy (and not!) treats, perfect for a hot summer day! Are you likely to get into the Wine Pop craze? Let us know in the comments below! Related posts: NEW Limited Time Menu Items at D-Luxe Burger in Walt Disney World’s Disney Springs! Remember that Power Stone Churro that snapped back into existence over in Hollywood Land at Disney California Adventure a couple weeks ago? Well, another one Avengers-themed churro has popped into action today: the Reality Stone Churro. Reality Stone Churro Both of these treats were part of the Disneyland After Dark: Heroes Assemble event in April, so we’re glad they’re back in action! Much like the Power Stone Churro, the Reality Stone Churro didn’t rock our socks off. It’s coated in cherry flavored sugar, icing, and red rock candy. Reality Stone Churro Though we LOVE the look of this churro, we didn’t love the taste or texture. For starters, the rock candy was, well, ROCK HARD to eat. Reality Stone Churro Aside from the painful-to-chew rock candy, the churro’s flavor wasn’t overly sweet. Unfortunately the cherry flavor really didn’t pop. And to top off the flavor fail, this churro is also a super messy one to eat. Like red lips, red teeth, red hands messy. So even though this Avengers treat looks as if it could wield all of the power in the galaxy, it’s really a total let down. Reality Stone Churro If you’ve just gotta try the Reality Stone Churro, it can be found at the Churro Cart in Hollywood Land for $5.75 before tax. But if you’re on a mission for a good churro, we suggest checking out the new S’mores churro instead. Join the DFB Newsletter to get all the breaking news right in your inbox! Our readers know we’re huge fans of D-Luxe Burger in Disney Springs! “Grub” Burger When we learned about some new eats on the menu, we had to try them for ourselves! Yesterday, we sampled the “Grub” Burger ($13.49) and the seasonal Orange Cream Shake ($7.50). “Grub” Burger The “Grub” Burger consists of a burger patty, tomato worms, basil grasshopper, balsamic vinegar spider, tomato salad, fried mozzarella, AND lettuce on a Parker House roll. “Grub” Burger We thought the burger was great once we took off the bugs haha! We loved the fried mozzarella cheese and tomato salad. It was just like a balsamic Caprese salad, but on a burger! The burger was cooked to order and not dry at all. We could have used a few more condiments, but it was still a decent option. “Grub” Burger Pick this one up at D-Luxe Burger for a limited time! We also couldn’t wait to try the Orange Cream Seasonal Shake — a Flavors of Florida menu item. Orange Cream Shake We loved this seasonal shake — and it’s the perfect addition for the Flavors of Florida promotion happening in Disney Springs. It tasted exactly like a melted orange creamsicle. It was absolutely delicious on a hot day in Orlando! Orange Cream Shake If you’d like to try the “Grub” Burger or Orange Cream Shake for yourself, head down to D-Luxe Burger in Disney Springs! Looking for another place to find treats in honor of The Lion King? The Mara Then head over to The Mara at Animal Kindom Lodge, where today we spotted two classic treats with an all-new look! The Mara is a quick service location inside Animal Kingdom Lodge that serves options like flatbreads, fried shrimp, and hamburgers. When stopping by today, we noticed that the Giraffe Eclair and the Kudu Cookie Sandwiches — which you can read a review for here — were sporting new Lion King decorations. The eclair remains a classic vanilla eclair with chocolate icing. Mara Lion King Eclair The only difference is the incredible image of Timon, Pumbaa, and Simba on the top of it — a tribute made of white chocolate! Mara Lion King Eclair The Kudu Cookie Sandwich still features two tasty cookies surrounding a helping of sweet frosting, dipped in white chocolate. Mara Lion Ling Kudu Cookie Mara Kudu Cookie The main difference is Simba’s chocolate mane (as opposed to the original chocolate horn of the Kudu) and the image of a lion on a white chocolate piece. Mara Lion King Kudu Cookie The Lion King version of these treats will likely only be around for a limited time… but hopefully at least until the new live-action version of The Lion King makes its debut in theaters on July 19th! What do you think of the new Lion King look for the treats? Let us know in the comments below! Mickey starts the party in a larger-than-life opening as he and his drum corps kick off a lively, musical procession with Disney characters. Next, Chip ‘n’ Dale arrive with a giant new celebration cake, followed by Goofy pulling another new float, inspired by the classic and nostalgic Mickey pull toys. And to celebrate the big anniversary and release of Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 4,” stars Tom Hanks and Tim Allen recently visited Toy Story Land and chatted about what it’s like to see their films come to life in a whole new way at the park. Along with Tom and Tim, other stars of the film including Annie Potts, Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks and Tony Hale visited Toy Story Land and also made a special appearance at our Disney Parks Blog fan event. As regular readers know, Toy Story Land makes guests feel like “honorary toys,” where they play with Woody, Buzz Lightyear and other favorite Toy Story characters in fun attractions throughout Andy’s backyard. Guests can ride Slinky Dog Dash, a multi-launch, family-friendly roller coaster; take a whirl in toy rocket ships in Alien Swirling Saucers; play interactive, 4D midway games in Toy Story Mania!; grab a bite to eat at Woody’s Lunch Box and much more. Isabel Navarro, a Nail Technician at the Senses Spas at Walt Disney World Resort, knows that Disney guests love to share their Disney passion in fun and colorful ways, sometimes right down to their nails! Isabel spends her days creating nail designs that delight guests with true Disney style. Now, thanks to Disney Aspire, the 100 percent tuition-paid education program for eligible hourly cast members, she is living out her goal of growing her English language skillset! Isabel, a Chile native and professional nail technician with almost 20 years of experience, has spent the past five of those years finding joy by interacting with guests and putting her talents to work creating magical experiences. It was here, Isabel developed a desire to grow her English language skills to further connect with guests. With Disney Aspire, she found a way to make that possible and is putting her #DreamsWithinReach. It all started when Isabel saw a flyer about Disney Aspire. Not only does the program help cast members find graduate and professional degrees through a network of schools, but Disney Aspire also offers the opportunity to study English or Spanish through Rosetta Stone courses. A perfect opportunity to support Isabel’s goal! She signed up for a one-year advanced English course online through Rosetta Stone, and after a few months of studying for five hours each week, she says she can already see an improvement. “I have learned so many new words and I feel I can explain everything a lot better to my clients,” said Isabel. “That gives me a lot of confidence and makes me want to keep studying.” With her improved skillset, she’s setting her sights on her next goal of taking management classes to help prepare her as she applies for leadership roles one day. “I know other people who are working on their GED and even studying for college degrees,” said Isabel. “We are all benefiting from this program and that’s motivating us all to pursue our dreams.” In 2018, Disney Aspire launched to help hourly cast members reach their educational goals by providing them with programs, coaching and job skills, all with the cost of tuition and books completely covered by Disney. Whether they’re studying vocational or professional skills, graduate degrees, or even language studies like Isabel, Disney Aspire gives eligible cast members the opportunity to enroll in a variety of programs to help them achieve their goals! And in exciting news, the ever-expanding network will include 25+ new program offerings across five schools beginning July 1! We’re so happy that Isabel is taking the next step in her professional journey and already has her sights set on more! We look forward to continuing our #DreamsWithinReach series in the coming months, bringing you more inspiring stories of cast members putting their dreams within reach with Disney Aspire! Back in May, Disney announced that Walt Disney World Resort hotel guests would have the option of upgrading their MagicBand with 30 fun options. Our readers expressed a lot of enthusiasm for this discounted pricing on some of their favorite designs! MagicBand Upgrade Screen Essentially, guests staying at a Disney resort from late-May onward could log into My Disney Experience and choose to upgrade their complimentary solid-colored MagicBands to bands with designs featuring beloved characters, attractions, and more. The cost for doing so was about $15 less than guests would pay for the same bands in the parks. But as is often the case when Disney announces something brand new and super-fun, the upgradable MagicBand options quickly went “out of stock”. See our post about the system’s glitches here! MagicBand Upgrade Options Now, after weeks of waiting, it appears the upgraded MagicBand option is back — with a few new designs! In My Disney Experience, it’s easy to see the Special Pre-Order Pricing of $10 per band, which is charged at the time of purchase. MagicBand Upgrade Options As with the initial round of upgraded MagicBands, Annual Passholders will also be presented with this option when renewing or purchasing a pass. MagicBand Upgrade Options Upgraded MagicBands will still be shipped to guests’ homes in the U.S. if they are ordered 11 or more days before their arrival. MagicBand Upgrade Options As a reminder, solid-colored complimentary MagicBands are still an option for those who do not wish to upgrade their MagicBand. Solid-Colored MagicBands But — no shocker here — the system does seem to be a little bit glitchy today, as a few of our team members have been unable to see the new options while others could. So if you’re trying to order your upgraded MagicBands, you may run into some hurdles. We’ll keep an eye on things and update if the MagicBand drama continues! Let us know in the comments how the MagicBand upgrade process goes for you! Echo Lake in Disney’s Hollywood Studios is where you’ll find some Epic Eats… Epic Eats … which you can pair with a beachy drink, now that the Rum Island Breeze cocktail can be found on the menu! Epic Eats menu In case you missed it, Epic Eats is the new name for the snack kiosk that was previously known as Oasis Canteen. Despite the name change, the menu featuring Funnel Cakes and Floats has remained the same, save for the addition of this new cocktail. Parrot Bay Coconut Rum and Bacardi are mixed with strawberry lemonade, pineapple juice, and grenadine to make the Rum Island Breeze. Rum Island Breeze As you probably anticipate, it’s very fruity, sweet, and tropical (and it was much appreciated that the drink wasn’t overloaded with ice, so there was plenty of it)! Rum Island Breeze Groundbreaking? Nope. But fans of sweet beach drinks (with some emphasis on the sweet) will likely enjoy the Island Rum Cocktail’s vibe. Cheers from Epic Eats! As guests take in the breathtaking vista of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, they may discover a multitude of hidden gems and details like petrified trees and ancient dwellings, and they have Kirstin Makela, Art Director at Walt Disney Imagineering, to thank for that! In our next installment of our #WomenBehindtheMagic blog series, we’re excited to introduce you to Kirstin and her almost eight year Imagineering and decade-long design career that led up to her being an important force behind the magic of the new land. For Kirstin, no two days on the job are the same. To help bring Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge to life, a typical day could mean meeting with interior designers, leading paint crews, or even consulting with the horticulture team to determine how to best incorporate natural elements into the land. With a land as innovative and detailed as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, now open at Disneyland Resort and opening August 29 at Walt Disney World Resort, she says it’s the diverse range of elements and challenges that keep the job exciting. A job that as a child, first piqued her interest because of the attention to detail that make Imagineering projects special. “I was seven years old when my parents first took me to Walt Disney World and I was immediately enamored with the immersive storytelling that was around me,” explained Kirstin. “The love and care in every little detail had me hooked!” Pictured above: Kirstin Makela with her sister during their first family trip to Walt Disney World in 1997. In college, Kirstin went on to study visual communication with an emphasis on graphic design and illustration. She later participated in museum internships where she was able to grow her skillset on exhibit design teams. “My internships were transformative,” Kirstin shared. “The ability to flex my muscles as a working designer gave me the confidence that I needed to apply to Disney Professional Internships before my graduation.” She began her Disney journey as an intern with Disney Consumer Products before starting as an Imagineer and considers herself lucky to continue to work on inspiring projects that delight Disney Parks guests every day, just like Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. “A lot of my professional satisfaction as an Imagineer comes when I’m being pushed to new limits,” said Kirstin. “I have gained an invaluable amount of new knowledge from the exposure that I had to everyone from carvers and painters to engineers and electricians. I truly feel like I became a better Imagineer on Batuu!” Kirstin and her team worked to perfect the stories of the Batuuans that had traveled through the historical space centuries ago. These very stories now mean guests can visit the Creature Stall or find a new trinket at Toydarian Toymaker. “We thought about where citizens may have grazed against the walls and left hand oils, or where merchant carts may have bumped into walls and left scratches and dents,” Kirstin shared. “We even included soot stains out of the kilns and ovens, so that they appear to have been used for decades.” For Kirstin, there’s no greater satisfaction as a designer than being able to see her ideas constructed and turned into a reality, like Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. “Sometimes, I’d take a moment to pause in the middle of our land, give my arm a little pinch and think to myself, ‘I can’t believe I get to be part of such a big moment in Disney Parks history,” Kirstin explained. Kirstin finds excitement in pushing herself to keep climbing higher. With Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge now open at Disneyland Resort and soon to open at Walt Disney World Resort on August 29, she’ll be applying the experience and learnings she gained from working on the land as she tackles new projects and explore new stories. Kirstin’s advice for aspiring Imagineers is to always stay curious, absorb every experience –no matter big or small, and to remember that as Imagineers you rely heavily on your personal stories for project inspiration, so remind yourself that you never know what past experience might spark inspiration. Kirstin is one of the many women making magic for Disney guests and fans around the world, whose stories we can’t wait to tell in our #WomenBehindtheMagic series. Stay tuned for the next story in this series, as we share the stories of some of the amazing women who played a role in the creation of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge! View the full article
