  1. Thinking you need a little getaway to your happy place — the place that relaxes you, refreshes you, and makes you feel like, well, you? But you’re smart enough to know that Walt Disney World vacations take MONTHS to plan and that summer is a big no-no if you want to actually have a good time there? Think it’s going to be too crowded this summer? You might be surprised… Well…maybe not THIS summer. Hear us out! Whether you’ve always been frightened by the summer projected crowd calendars or have never booked a Disney trip without at least 6 months of preparation, it’s time to put all your preconceived notions aside. THIS Summer is super weird…and you may actually want to head to the World for a quick getaway, believe it or not! Here’s why: Crowds May Be Lighter Than You Think Typically Walt Disney World crowds reach a fever pitch during the summer culminating in brutally long wait times for attractions and clogged thoroughfares. Summer 2019, however, may be a much different story. You see, a lot of folks have been delaying their summer Disney trips until after August 29th, when Star Wars:Galaxy’s Edge debuts at Hollywood Studios. Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run in Galaxy’s Edge This means the parks may be more manageably busy than compared to summers past. Once Star Wars opens in Walt Disney World, however, the resort in its entirety is expected to be busier than it has been in years…and for years to come. And then we’ve got the 50th Anniversary in 2021 — which means tons of new rides, new attractions, and HOARDS OF HUMANS. So, yeah, Disney World’s NOT going to be EMPTY this summer. That’s just crazy. BUT, this might be your last chance to experience not just Hollywood Studios, but the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, and Epcot before the real frenzy begins over the next two years. Disney’s Doing Serious Discounts Disney’s running tons of discounts right now — room discounts, ticket discounts, package discounts — to bring people into the parks this summer. It’s kind of unprecedented…and you should totally benefit from this, my friends! Magic Kingdom, Here We Come! Currently, Walt Disney World is offering 25% off rooms at select Disney resorts if you book before August 28th. Disney is also featuring a special promotion right now called the “Summer One World” ticket. It enables guests one visit to all four Disney theme parks along with both waterparks and is available for purchase until August 23rd. The tickets are good until August 28th and the cost is $74 plus tax per park ($444 plus tax in total) for adults and $69 plus tax per park ($414 plus tax in total) for children. This is a huge savings over the standard park ticket price which varies between $109 to $129 plus tax per park per visit. See Them Before They’re Gone What will you be doing on your impromptu Disney vacation? Aside from devouring the usual Dole Whips and Mickey-shaped treats, you’ll be just in time to experience several limited summertime offerings and events! You can see IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth one last time before its final performance on September 30th. Farewell IllumiNations Pin Or maybe seeing Toy Story 4 has you wanting to dance the night away with Partysaurus Rex at Typhoon Lagoon’s H20 Glow Nights, a special nighttime event on select evenings which features special pool party music, lights, food, and beverages. Tickets are $59 plus tax when purchased in advance and the event runs until August 24th. Partysaurus Rex If you’ve ever wanted to have a water park all to yourself…without having to worry about a sunburn…you may be interested in this. (Don’t forget you can totally get a bathtub sundae.) Bathtub Party Sundae ©Disney Now, if you want to blast out of this world to a seriously AWESOME Mix-Tape, Star-Lord and Gamora have been spotted over at the American Adventure Pavilion in Epcot’s World Showcase performing Guardians of the Galaxy – Awesome Mix Live! daily. This show is actually super fun — especially if you’re partial to 70s and 80s tunes (which you should be). Guardians of the Galaxy — Awesome Mix Live! Oh, and don’t forget that several Guardians-themed snacks, slushes, and beverages are available for purchase at Fife & Drum Tavern for a limited time. You can see our FULL REVIEW of them here! (And, yes, that burger bun does look moldy…but it’s just food coloring. Still, we suggest you stick with the killer fries! ;-D) Guardians of the Galaxy — Awesome Mix Live! Eats Finally, have you wished Mickey Mouse a “Happy 90th Birthday”? There’s still time, but you’ll have to hurry to meet Mickey and Minnie dressed in their special celebration attire at Town Square Theatre before it’s too late! This celebration — along with the eats that go along with it — may end on September 30th, so this summer is your last chance! Everyone’s favorite couple: Mickey and Minnie! Now if this summer isn’t your jam, we get it. You want to wait for Galaxy’s Edge, or you just prefer visiting when it’s cooler. 3. We’re back with another What’s New, and this time we’re visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios! This Park is poised for a new era as we edge closer, day by day, to the August 29 opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. But in the meantime, we’re bringing you updates to menus, merchandise, and construction! Chinese Theater Disney’s Hollywood Studios Food Updates Last week we let you know that the Exotic Margarita at BaseLine Tap House was back. But now it’s gone again, and the saga of the Exotic Margarita continues! The last absence was due to a dearth of yuzu, so we’re thinking this is more of the same. Quit playing games with our hearts, yuzu! Exotic Margarita Over at Backlot Express we noticed a handful of menu changes. The Chicken Ranch Club Sandwich has replaced the California Chicken Club Sandwich; and Chicken Breast Strips are now listed as Chicken Tenders. Backlot Express In other news, the Chicken Breast Strips with Biscuits have been removed, and there are no longer Biscuits as a side, either. And a cast member speculated that the Caprese Sandwich would be going soon, too, because it was not included on the printed menus. But on our visit, it could still be ordered. Backlot Express Disney’s Hollywood Studios Construction Updates On our last visit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the gondolas were absent from the Skyliner station, but on this day, they were back! We only spotted a few out on the lines, but there were several inside the station. Skyliner Gondolas It was great to see them back on the lines, and we’re excited to hear when they might start ferrying guests from place to place! Skyliner Gondolas The station itself is looking great, with chrome details and Art Deco gradations of color on the pillars. Skyliner Gondolas We’re not seeing much work on the Chinese Theater where Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will open next spring, but on this visit, we did spy a construction worker on the roof. Chinese Theater Now you see him, now you don’t, though, and it’s unclear what was going on up there, anyway. But we’ll keep checking! Chinese Theater And as a reminder, the March of the First Order ended on July 6, so you’ll likely have to wait until Galaxy’s Edge opens to see these folks walking around again. Stormtroopers Disney’s Hollywood Studios Merchandise Minnie’s cementing her status as an icon with her latest line of merchandise. We spotted two pieces — a tee and a tote — in Once Upon a Time. Minnie Icon Merch We actually love the simplicity of the design — and the fact that it’s absolutely true. Minnie Icon Merch The funky leggings we’ve seen elsewhere in the World are also at Hollywood Studios. This display at Once Upon a Time includes leggings and coordinating tee shirts. Leggings and Tee Sets You know this shirt holds special meaning for the DFB! Snack Shirt The coordinating leggings are making us hungry. And also making us want to do yoga. You can also spot these at Disney Springs! Retro Hats And for the days we’re not wearing our Disney World hats, we’ll wear these ears from Alex & Ani. 6. We’re journeying to Epcot today, where — just a spark from me to you — you’re going to want to scroll all the way through the day’s What’s New. We’ve got Windbreakers (yes, the 80s are back… but make it Disney), miles (not exactly but almost) of construction fencing, and FOOD BOOTHS ARE GOIN’ UP! Let’s see if we can light your fancy, shall we? Epcot’s Spaceship Earth Epcot Food Updates Over at Sunshine Seasons, the Chocolate Oreo Mousse has a new look. Previously it was served in a small bowl with a chocolate curl on top. Oreo Cookie Mousse has a new look! Joy of Tea at the China Pavilion in World Showcase is currently offering Lychee Iced Black Tea with Mango-Flavored Coconut Jelly. Lychee Tea Addition Over at the Germany Pavilion, the festival food booth is still selling beer and pretzels and has been named — wait for for it — Bier und Brezeln. Yeah, that’s Beer and Pretzels. Germany Beer & Pretzel Kiosk And FYI: the second beer cart at Germany is still missing. At Kabuki Cafe in the Japan Pavilion, we noticed some new-to-us paper cups in use for the refreshing Kaki Gori. (Click here to read about these icy treats!) I do find that they kind of cycle through different containers here, so you never really know what you’re going to get. New-to-Us Cups at Kabuki Cafe In Canada at Le Cellier, we noticed a few updates to the menu. The current World Showcase Poutine is Inspired by Flavors of France. It’s a remix on the Croque Madame so there will be an egg! Le Cellier has also added French Onion Soup, a Baby Iceberg Wedge Salad, and Summer Tomato and Watermelon Salad. Three menu items have returned: Artisan Cheese Plate, Maple Whiskey Glazed Brussels Sprouts, and Seared George’s Banks Scallops. Fresh Popped Corn Fresh Popped Corn sells… popcorn, regular and Maple! Also on the menu: Le Cellier Batch #5 Ketchup Chips, Coke products, bottled water, and alcoholic beverages including Le Fin Du Monde. Fresh Popped Corn Menu What’s New in Epcot Construction Updates In Epcot construction news, the playground that was themed to Toy Story for Epcot Flower and Garden Festival has lost the character overlay but otherwise remained the same. Future World Play Area This is a great spot to let the kiddos run out some energy (especially if you’re about to embark on a trip around World Showcase!). Future World Play Area There aren’t any slides or swings, but you’ll find balance equipment, hands-on activity boards, and climbers. Future World Play Area In space restaurant news: there’s no visible progress. Scaffolding remains up on this exterior portion that we can see, and there’s open (as in not-yet-enclosed) construction on the left. Space Restaurant Progress Read the most recent update from Disney on this all-new, immersive restaurant that’s coming later this year. Space Restaurant Progress It’s more of the same over at the Guardians of the Galaxy coaster: not much discernible progress on the exterior, though we’re sure there’s lots of exciting change to come! Guardians of the Galaxy Coaster Progress Guardians of the Galaxy Coaster Progress This is the attraction’s current view from the parking lot. Guardians of the Galaxy Coaster Progress In big construction news that will alter how you get around the Park, a long swath of construction fencing and wall has gone up from Journey into the Imagination toward Character Spot and around, blocking off the path heading into World Showplace. Epcot Walkway Closure From this angle you can see how long this fencing is. It runs along the area that’s turned into a floral carpet during Flower and Garden and blocks off a path where you’d typically find some food booths during Festivals. Epcot Walkway Closure Either end of the fence is blocked by a sturdier wall. Epcot Walkway Closure Epcot Walkway Closure Looking back toward Future World, you can see just how extensive the fencing is and spot some construction equipment in the area. Epcot Walkway Closure Epcot Walkway Closure During the closure, the path between Future World and World Showcase is blocked, and you’ll either have to walk all the way around or cut through the Character Spot/Club Cool building. (We say cut through because air conditioning.) Epcot Walkway Closure In Epcot International Food and Wine Festival News, a few food booths are up! The Festival begins on August 29, so we’ll keep watching and updating as they come to fruition! China Booth Front of the Morocco Booth Click here to see which booths we’ve spotted in addition to China and Morocco! Liberty Inn Refurbishment Click HERE to Read All About Regal Eagle! Liberty Inn Refurbishment Disney says Regal Eagle will have “all the accompanying sights, sounds, smells and flavors you love – including a large smoker preparing fine food every day right on the pavilion’s promenade.” Suffice to say we’re hungry already. Liberty Inn Refurbishment Over in Canada, scaffolding is still up in front of the stonework on the right side of the pavilion where O Canada, the pavilion’s circlevision film, is shown. Canada Pavilion Scaffolding O Canada will stop running temporarily later this summer, as a new film is created for the attraction. During Epcot’s International Food and Wine Festival, the O Canada theater will serve as an air conditioned space to relax. 15. Star Wars seems to be all the talk lately with the soon to be opening of Galaxy’s Edge in Hollywood Studios and the mega announcement of the Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance opening dates for both Disney World and Disneyland. And following suit, it seems as if a popular Star Wars overlay might be sticking around a bit longer than expected. ©Disney It’s no surprise that guests love Hyperspace Mountain in Disneyland. This Star Wars-themed overlay allows guests in Disneyland to be a part of the Star Wars universe in a unique way as they fend off crossfire from starfighters and TIE fighters. This overlay returned to the park on May 4th and was suspected to stick around through the end of the Summer. Now, according to the Orange County Register, it seems as if the overlay is here to stay through Disneyland’s spooky season. The OCR states, “that means Space Mountain won’t get the Ghost Galaxy ride overlay this Halloween season.” Currently, there are no times listed on the Disneyland website for Hyperspace Mountain beyond August 22nd. So, hopefully, the times will be updated soon to reflect this change! But nothing is confirmed until announced by Disney, so stay tuned! Not only will you get one of the best views of Epcot’s and Hollywood Studios’ New Year’s Eve fireworks, but you’ll be able to watch them without the insane swarms of the holiday crowds. ©Disney This event will also include food, beverages, and musical entertainment including a DJ, traditional Italian musicians, and vocalists. 19. We’re about 7 weeks out until we can wine and dine at Epcot’s 2019 Food and Wine Festival, you guys! 2019 Festival Map And, while we have the menus for the featured stations, the booth set-ups are just now being set up around the World Showcase. We’re so close, we can almost taste it! So far, we have seen four fan favorites (and some of ours too!) currently set up. Japan Booth Japan, our first stop, is the home again this year of the Teriyaki Chicken Bun. The steamed bun filled with chicken, vegetables, and a sweet teriyaki sauce was packed with flavor at the last Food and Wine Festival. We can’t WAIT to try it again! Front of the Japan Booth As we make our way over to the next booth, China is kicking back into action this year with the Kung Fu Punch. China Booth Mixed with vodka, triple sec, mango syrup, and orange juice, we seriously thought this was one of the tastiest (and strongest) drinks featured on the map. Front of the China Booth One deep inhale, and you know you’re at the Morocco booth with the incredible smells. Morocco Booth We’re ready to go to chocolate heaven with the Chocolate Baklava made of rolled phyllo dough, toasted almonds, and dark chocolate sauce. Front of the Morocco Booth We also spotted the L’Chaim! Holiday Kitchen booth on the promenade, which hasn’t yet been re-dressed as the Brazil booth for the festival! This year, our favorites — the Pork Belly and the Cheese Bread — will be back again! L’Chaim Booth And remember that Flavors From Fire made an appearance last week over there in Future World! This is where you can get my BELOVED SMOKED CORN BEEF CHIP NACHO THINGS! (Oh, they are SO good.) Flavors from Fire Booth Visible The booth construction makes the upcoming start of the 2019 Food and Wine Festival that much sweeter. See you there! 20. The planet of Batuu is bustling with creatures and aliens that serve integral roles within Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Find exotic creatures in the merchant stall or encounter aliens running their own businesses. As you journey through the land, you may come across these creatures and aliens along the way: Dok-Ondar In Batuu, Dok-Ondar is the proprietor of a unique intergalactic curiosities shop, Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. He is an alien hailing from the planet Ithor. When visiting his collection, be prepared to see a variety of oddities, from taxidermic creatures to holocrons and more. Some travelers know him as the “gatekeeper” of the black market in Black Spire Outpost, so try not to cross him! While taking inventory, he is known to order his assistants around between incoming calls. Ollopom Sometimes mistaken for plants, ollopoms are gentle aquatic rodents found in the Gungan swamps of the planet Naboo. Naboo is the home planet of Padmé Amidala, as well as the Gungan Jar Jar Binks from “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.” You can find one of these fascinating creatures of disguise, Ollie the ollopom, bobbing in the water when visiting Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. Ollie was a gift from Hondo, who found it in an unmarked cargo. Sarlacc This infant sarlacc, named Simpi, may seem adorable to some, but this creature is the same type of carnivorous giant seen in the sand pit in “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.” Growing up to 100 meters long, the massive mouth of these sarlaccs can turn someone’s good day to bad if swallowed whole! Dok-Ondar keeps this little sarlacc (procured by none other than Han Solo and Chewbacca as told in the Marvel Star Wars comic series Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge) in a special tank that simulates arid atmospheric conditions. Hondo Ohnaka For visitors that remember “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels” animated series, Hondo Ohnaka is the infamous Weequay pirate turned “legitimate” businessman that may or may not serve as a smuggler now on Batuu. When boarding the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy on Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, you’ll encounter Hondo instructing new recruits on his mission to deliver coaxium, which is of importance to both the First Order and the Resistance. If you decide to deliver the restricted items for his business, Ohnaka Transport Solutions, don’t expect any of the profits! Wampa Wampas are accustomed to the cold weather on the planet Hoth. These carnivorous creatures are covered in white fur, horns and claws for survival. You may remember seeing an encounter with one during Luke Skywalker’s Hoth adventure in “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.” Thankfully on Batuu, Dok-Ondar has secured a taxidermic wampa for spectators to admire, as well as other taxidermic creatures on the wall. This prized possession is worth a look when you visit Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. Dianoga Dianogas are slimy, tentacled carnivores that thrive in dark hiding places. For visitors that remember “Star Wars: A New Hope,” a Dianoga attacked Luke Skywalker in the Death Star trash compactor. Now, you can spot two hiding on Batuu. Next time you stop to drink at the water fountain in the Black Spire Outpost marketplace, check to see if the eye of “Tiny” pops out of the water tank above. If you want to see a juvenile known as “Toothy” in Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities, peek inside the tank and see it up close! Worrt An adoptable creature is the frog-like worrt found at the Creature Stall in the Black Spire Outpost Marketplace. This carnivorous amphibian is a native to the planet of Tatooine, famously seen outside Jabba the Hutt’s palace in “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.” Be careful of its powerful tongue, as it snatches unsuspecting rodents and insects on the way! If you stop by Oga’s Cantina, you can also spot a worrt in one of the amphibian tanks. There is a plethora of other fascinating inhabitants to be found on Batuu, so keep an eye out during your next visit to Batuu. View the full article
  21. Kona Island at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort seems to have a deep craving for bacon lately. Candied Bacon First, they introduced three flavors of chocolate-covered bacon and now we have spotted a Bacon Chocolate-covered STRAWBERRY! Seems like a strange combo, right? Bacon-covered Strawberry Well, it sorta was and it sorta wasn’t at the same time. When taking a bite, you’d either taste strawberry OR bacon. We never really felt as if you could taste both at the same time even if they were in the same bite. Bacon-covered Strawberry The chocolate honestly was forgotten as it was so overpowered by the salty bacon. Bacon-covered Strawberry Speaking of overpowering, that bacon was definitely the most powerful flavor to us. Bacon-covered Strawberry So, yeah, it’s a fun and interestingly strange idea. But sadly, it didn’t really work for us! If you’re looking for other bacon options, we suggest trying out the chocolate-covered bacon instead. Bacon-covered Strawberry The strawberry is listed as a seasonal treat at Kona Island and will cost ya $4. And sadly, this is not a Disney Dining Plan snack credit option. And as far as other strawberry options, there are plenty of choices at Kona Island — read about them here! What do you think about this strange treat option? Let us know in the comments below! 22. For those of you who loved the Reese’s Pieces Cupcake from Beach Club, we’re happy to announce that the Goofy Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcake that replaced it a while back is a great and similar option. Disney’s Beach Club Resort Though the Goofy Cupcake has been around for a while, we thought it deserved a full review! The previous Reese’s Pieces cupcake sold at the Marketplace was a good dessert in a pinch. And over the years we got a bit attached to it! But when it disappeared, the Goofy Cupcake came in and basically serves as the Reese’s Pieces Cupcake’s replacement. Reese’s Pieces Cupcake For starters, we think that the Goofy Cupcake is a much cuter version of the Reese’s Cupcake that came before it. And we think Disney has done a great job with the fondant Goofy ears and the white chocolate hat. Goofy Peanut Butter Cupcake For flavor and texture — Goofy scores points. This cupcake was much moister than its Reese’s counterpart in our experience. Goofy Peanut Butter Cupcake We were a bit disappointed that there was no filling, but we were BIG fans of the bright orange peanut butter buttercream. We thought that the flavors were super simple and really delicious. Goofy Peanut Butter Cupcake So, the major differences between the two was the consistency and the look. Peanut butter fans will be happy with this one as well. Goofy Peanut Butter Cupcake You can find the Goofy Cupcake at the Marketplace locations at both the Yacht and Beach Club for $5.99. It can also be purchased with a Disney Dining Plan snack credit!! Love Disney Cupcakes? Check out our 2019 Disney Cupcake Crawl CHALLENGE! 23. As part of our commitment to inspire the next generation of maritime professionals, we had the pleasure of hosting a group of students onboard the Disney Dream from the Bahamas Maritime Cadet Corps when the ship was docked in Nassau recently. The timing of the tour could not have been more perfect since it fell on “Day of the Seafarer,” which is celebrated annually on June 25, and recognizes the unique contributions made by seafarers from all over the world. The Bahamas Maritime Cadet Corps is a program instituted under the Bahamas Maritime Authority to introduce and prepare high school students for employment in the maritime industry. While onboard the students explored the ship’s engine room, toured the bridge, went behind-the-scenes of The Walt Disney Theater and participated in a panel discussion with the ship’s captain, Andy McRonald, along with other senior officers. Captain Andy shared with us that he could not think of a better way to celebrate the day then touring this energetic group of aspiring maritime professionals onboard and giving them a glimpse into the world of cruise ship operations. Take a look at their day: This tour is a part of Disney Cruise Line initiatives focused on inspiring youth to pursue maritime careers. Most recently, Disney Cruise Line also announced that it will sponsor four scholarships at the LJM Maritime Academy for female cadets aspiring to become ship captains and shipboard leaders. The scholarships, one for each of the ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, will include tuition to the three-year program – two years of study at the academy and one year of service aboard a Disney ship. Other programs include the debut of Captain Minnie Mouse who will make the rounds on all Disney ships and visit port communities including those in The Bahamas. Later this year, Captain Minnie Mouse will also appear in an all-new, onboard youth activity being developed for Disney Cruise Line ships where young captain hopefuls will practice STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills in a fun, interactive marine-themed activity. 25. Early mornings and late nights in Magic Kingdom may get 10x easier for Grand Floridian and Polynesian Village Resort guests! Cinderella Castle There is so much construction going on around Disney World right now. From the Ticket and Transportation Center to the Skyliner Gondola System, the parks are going all out to make travel much more convenient for guests as the 50th anniversary approaches for Walt Disney World. And now there may be another convenience in the works that we’ve been hoping for for a LONG time… . A recent permit filed under the Florida State Department seems to indicate that a walkway may be built between the Grand Floridian and Magic Kingdom at some point. Or at least Disney World is laying the groundwork, so to speak, to allow for one to exist. The Grand Floridian Since there is already a walkway between the Polynesian Village Resort and the Grand Floridian, this would mean that Polynesian Village Resort guests would also have walking access to the Magic Kingdom from their resort hotel. And while there is a monorail system station at both resorts — and boats are available to and from the Magic Kingdom from both the Grand Floridian and the Polynesian — with this potential walkway, guests would be able to walk straight from their rooms to the Magic Kingdom for Extra Magic Hours or take a stroll back after fireworks on the walkway, avoiding the lines and crowds at the monorail and boat boarding stations. Polynesian Village Resort Currently, only Disney’s Contemporary Resort has direct walking access to the Magic Kingdom, so this is an exciting and long-awaited development if it turns out to come to pass. Our fingers are crossed! Are you excited as we are about the Grand Floridian walkway? Let us know in the comments below!
