  1. While most of us are just regular people who like to enjoy a nice time at Disney World to relax and unwind, there is another group of super-human athletes that come to Disney to COMPETE! It’s Mickey! We’re talking about football players and cheer squads (along with their entourages!) which can sometimes flood Disney World Resort with THOUSANDS of peppy peeps! If you’re not a cheerleader or proud cheer parent, you probably don’t have a clue when these major sporting events are held, or how they could impact your trip to Disney World! That’s why we want to give you a quick rundown on when these cheerleading championships typically take place — and what you can expect if your vacation dates coincide with Disney World’s Football and Cheer Season! December Pop Warner Super Bowl and National Cheer and Dance Championships While several cheer competitions are held from January to May at Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, one of the biggest youth sporting events actually takes place in December. Pop Warner Merch Last year, Pop Warner ran from December 7 to December 14 and brought athletes from over 64 national football teams and 400 cheer squads to Orlando to compete. Trust us when we say things can get a little hectic if Pop Warner catches you off guard! Disney even makes a special line of Pop Warner merch for the participants! Learn more about the impact Pop Warner can have on your vacation plans here! April – May Numerous Cheer Championships The next batch of major cheer tourneys crops up in springtime with the USASF Cheerleading Worlds happening in late April as well as the International Cheerleading Union World Championships (ICU). Minnie Stops By to Lead a Cheer The Summit, which is the last All-Star competition of the season, normally takes place in early May along with the D2 Summit typically held right after. All of these championships bring in lots of kids and spectators, so let’s explore how this might affect your vacation as a non-participant! Check out what else could possibly come to Wide World of Sports this year! Crowd Levels at the Disney World Theme Parks During Cheer Events At the Beginning of the Competition So, there’s good news and bad news. Here’s the good news first: these highly-trained athletes are here mainly for one thing and one thing only — to compete. Everything else (even Mickey Mouse!) is pretty much secondary. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Many cheer coaches won’t even allow their teams to visit the theme parks until AFTER they’re eliminated from the competition, so you might not really experience anything out of the ordinary until the first few days are over. Check out our tips for avoiding crowds at Disney World here! Towards the Middle and the End of the Competition Once teams start dropping out, THEN you’ll start to see kids showing up at the parks. And once these championships are over, many teams make a point of staying an extra day or two to blow off a little of that competitive steam. Cheerleaders tend to travel in packs, so you’ll probably see some large groups of ’em (look for the BIG cheer hairbows!), but all in all, we’ve never found crowds to be THAT bad. Magic Kingdom Sign As long as you’ve got your FastPasses booked well in advance, you should be fine with normal to slightly above normal crowd levels (and noise levels) for a few days of your trip. Check out some of the BIGGEST time-wasters at Disney World (and tips for how to avoid them) here! Possible Closures And for the Worlds Competition (the one in April), Disney’s Hollywood Studios typically holds a private after-hours party for cheer squads, meaning regular park guests will get the boot a few hours early. This is usually posted in advance on the displayed park hours, so you can plan around it — but be sure to be looking for it! All in all, you really shouldn’t feel too much of a crunch at the parks. Now Disney World’s hotels, on the other hand, are a different story altogether. Disney World Resorts During Cheer Events Disney World resorts are where things start to get a little more noticeable. All-Star Sports Since each cheer squad is comprised of several members who often need to stay at the same hotel so they can practice, you might find yourself in the middle of an impromptu pep rally if you’re not careful! Disney World’s Value Resorts Cheerleaders will often stay on property at Disney World with Value Resorts being a popular option. Disney’s All-Star Music Resort, (not surprisingly) Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort, and Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort tend to book up with these groups during the competitive season. This Makes a Great Cheer Practice Spot, so Be Ready! These groups can be found practicing on the hotel grounds at times, so if you find yourself at one of these hotels, be prepared for a little (okay, a lot) of extra energy and noise at the resort! Also, during those first few days of competition, the practices can be EARLY. So…we guess you won’t be missing Rope Drop after all? See how some of these resorts celebrate Disney World’s Cheer Season here! Disney World’s Moderate Resorts While Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort is a moderate resort, it’s conveniently located near ESPN Wide World of Sports and many convention-goers choose it for its extra amenities. Gran Destino Tower If you’re staying at any of these resorts we’ve just mentioned, you’re more likely to see groups of pre-teens and teens stunting or training in common areas. They usually aren’t too rowdy, but you could hear cheering or music, which depending on your level of tolerance, might encourage you to stay elsewhere. Learn more about Gran Destino Tower at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort here! Disney Springs During Cheer Events You might find Disney Springs to be a little more bustling during the cheer comps, especially in the evening when the groups are looking to enjoy some retail therapy and do some carbo-loading for the big day ahead. Shops might be a bit busier while restaurants tend to book up more quickly. Kate Spade X Minnie Mouse Collection If you’d rather not deal with the extra crowds, do Disney Springs earlier in the day while the kids are still competing. Click here to check out ALL of the Disney Springs restaurants! Transportation During Cheer Events Many of the cheerleaders use Disney World’s ground transportation. This means you might experience some delays on your end due to the increased demand for buses. ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex You might also end up on a bus filled with cheerleaders or have to wait for another bus since an entire cheer squad just filled up a bus that’s heading to or from the parks. Incredibles Bus Check out these ten simple tips that will make your Disney World vacation WAY easier! Either way, we think it’s still pretty manageable to go to Disney World during Cheer Season as long as you manage your expectations and know what you’re getting into. We’ve been at Disney World many times during cheer competitions and have worked around the crowds with relative ease. Magic Kingdom There might be some craziness, crowds, or extra noisiness at times, but for many of these youngsters, competing in a national championship at Disney World signifies a major athletic achievement in their young lives. To learn more about some of the transportation options Disney World has to offer, click here! In the end, we ALL have something we hope to gain from going to Disney World, whether it’s a shiny cheer trophy or just a Mickey Pretzel! Thankfully neither are mutually-exclusive and we can all make some special Disney World memories that will last a lifetime whether we’re in it to win it or just have a relaxing vacation! 2. Shanghai Disneyland reopened to guests on May 11th. In order to limit guest capacity as part of the new health and safety measures, guests have been required to purchase dated admission tickets ahead of their visit to enter the park while Annual Passholders have been required to make a reservation. Shanghai Disneyland To this point, previously purchased General Admission tickets have not been accepted. However, an update to the Disneyland Shanghai website advises guests that — starting today, June 1st, guests with General Admission tickets will be able to make a reservation to visit the park for the dates of June 3rd through June 7th. The website also instructs guests on how to make a reservation with a list of One-Day General Admission Ticket Advanced Reservation Procedures and Requirements. Though as of today, June 1st, reservations are only available for the dates of June 3rd through June 7th, reservations will continue to become available on a six-day reservation calendar basis. Shanghai Disneyland website screenshot The instructions state that: “From 13:00, June 2, reservations for park visits on June 8 will be available to guests. From 13:00 every day starting June 3, we will open a six-day reservation calendar. Guests cannot make a reservation for a visit on the same date as the reservation. The reservation system will be updated at 13:00 each day, with a limited daily quota.” Pirates of the Caribbean at Shanghai Disneyland Guests should also be advised that ‘the validity period of a One-Day General Admission Ticket will be extended for the number of lost days falling between the park’s closure date of January 25, 2020 and the end of the “Advanced Reservation Period.” ‘ Interested guests can learn more by visiting the Shanghai Disneyland Resort website. It’s also worth mentioning that — while we await further details — Walt Disney World Resort plans to implement a theme park reservation system when Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom reopen to guests on July 11th, followed by EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios on July 15th. You can read more about the reopening of Walt Disney World Resort by visiting any of the links below. What do you think of the theme park reservation system so far? Please let us know with a comment! 4. Walt Disney World is basically its own city complete with 4 theme parks, 2 water parks, 1 massive outdoor shopping district, and over 25 resorts. (Oh and did we mention they actually have their own city government, including emergency systems? But that’s another story altogether.) Needless to say, it’s good to know as much as possible before you visit! Epcot So, you’re all set with your FastPass+ and Advance Dining Reservations, but there are likely to be a few surprises you may have not expected. There are plenty of things that continue to perplex even the most experienced Disney vacationers. Here’s our list of the Weirdest Things Nobody Told Me Before I Went to Walt Disney World. Going to Disney is like stepping into a whole other world at times! We’ve got some of the more interesting differences you may spot here that aren’t as common in the “real world.” Disney Fans LOVE to Plan Their Outfits There’s way more to Disney style than the casual souvenir t-shirt these days. It’s a full-blown lifestyle for some folks! Matching Shirts Matching shirts, hats, and accessories are basically everywhere you look nowadays in the parks. You’ll spot families, groups around Epcot, newlyweds, and even Bachelorette parties in matching looks. Matching Shirts! Disney obviously offers a seemingly endless supply of cute t-shirts, but many folks choose to make their own or order from custom retailers online. With the boom of at-home vinyl cutters in the past few years, many people know at least someone who can cut them out an iron-on for some shirts. If you want one of your own (they’re super easy to work with!) this is our favorite model! Bride to Be Shirt It’s not at all uncommon to see people or whole families who plan their entire wardrobe for a full Disney trip around matching shirts for each day, even based on the park that they’re in that day! It makes it easy to keep tabs on your crew in a busy park, and shows off that you’re together and possibly celebrating something. Dapper Day and DisneyBounding There are even days devoted entirely to dressing up in a particular way. You may happen to visit the parks and notice a ton of guests dressed to the nines. Chances are, you’re visiting on Dapper Day! Smaller unofficially planned days happen in the parks from time to time, so if you happen to spot a crowd of guests in interesting attire, check it out! Dapper Day Announcement For a lot of folks, dressing for a day at Disney World is a full-time endeavor. It’s more than just shorts and a t-shirt! A lot of time and energy is invested in making sure they look their absolute best, and we love seeing families and friends dressed to impress! When do you HAVE to dress up in Disney World? Find out here! Some People Take Merchandise Very Seriously! The Wonderful World of Pin Traders Ever see folks around the parks with lanyards covered in Disney pins? Or do you ever wonder why there are long lines outside of a gift shop first thing in the morning? Welcome to the world of Pin Trading! Galaxy’s Edge Lanyard with Pin Pin Trading may feel like this underground world where pins are currency, but really it’s just a fun hobby for many guests wanting a more unique souvenir. Pin trading is an experience, and it’s one you can continue on each time you visit Disney World. Pin Trading Board Why do people do it? Well, some like the hunt for hard to find pins. Some like lines of pins related to their favorite rides or characters. Some like the chance to interact with Cast Members who trade pins. Disney often will release lines of “hidden Mickey pins” just to Cast Members, meaning they have a small Mickey head on the front of them somewhere and you can only initially score them by interacting with a Cast Member! Pin Trading Not sure how to get started? Most gift shops sell “starter packs” of pins. If you see a Cast Member with pins, politely ask if they’d make a trade with you. Before you know it, you’ll be trading pins like a pro! French Quarter Pin Board Pin Trading boards can be found it lots of places. Guest Relations, retail shops, and the front desk at the Disney World resorts will have some sort of board or book that you can look at! Some spots, like stroller rental locations, often have fun and unexpected forms of pin boards. Caribbean Beach Pin Trading Board Many restaurants, like Columbia Harbour House in Magic Kingdom, put out a pin board as the day goes on, so keep your eyes peeled! Merchandise Mania The Disney swag obsession goes way beyond pins! The casual fan may not be aware of the full scope of the merchandise scene at Walt Disney World. Those in-the-know tend to follow along as Disney continually releases limited-edition merch. Space Mountain Ears Epcot always has new swag to collect for their annual festivals. If you spot an unusually long line at a merchandise shop, those devoted few are likely waiting to get their hands on a limited release item. Epcot 35 Limited-Release Merchandise We’ve seen this happen usually in the first few days of the Festivals at Epcot, or the first nights of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party or Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Limited Edition MagicBands, Spirit Jerseys, pins, and more are hot commodities when first released! Check out last year’s Very Merry Christmas Party merchandise here! The Weather Can Be Crazier Than You Think It’s no surprise to many that Florida tends to be pretty warm for the majority of the year. First-time visitors may be quite surprised by just HOW warm it is. Thanks to humidity, you’ll likely be sweating from every pore of your POOR body. Hydate! Hydate! Hydate! One tip to stay in control of the situation is to stay hydrated! There are water bottle refilling stations at select places throughout property and you can ask at any time for a complimentary cup of ice water from any counter-service spot. Cups of Water Ready to Take Many outdoor carts sell misting fans or cooling towels in warmer months, or you can bring some from home. Seriously, staying cool in Disney World in the warmer months is a challenge. You WILL get hot and sweaty…and then it will probably rain and all that warm humidity will make it feel like you’re walking in a straight-up sauna. Misting Fan Let’s talk about that rain for a moment. If you’re visiting in the summer months, you can almost guarantee that it will rain during your trip at some point. Expect the raindrops to arrive mid-afternoon. These storms are usually pretty quick (sometimes coming out of nowhere, so REALLY check that weather app before heading out each morning!), but they can be downright brutal if you get stuck in a torrential downpour. Be prepared with your rain gear so your day doesn’t come to a grinding halt! Rain, rain, go away! But perhaps the most BIZARRE weather pattern that no one seems to talk about or warn us about is how COLD it can get in Central Florida! If you visit in the winter months, be prepared to feel a little more than just chilly! It can feel downright freezing if you happen to be there during one of Florida’s “cold snaps”, so have a couple of heavier sweatshirts or jackets ready. Learn more about surviving Disney World’s weather here! Guest Behavior Can Be…Interesting Disney does everything they can to ensure you’re going to have a magical time during your trip, but it’s highly likely you’re going to run into some unruly guests at some point. While it seems common knowledge to not block others while riding an attraction with the use of your phone, camera, iPad, or flash (you even get that “please, no flash pictures” speech on EVERY dark ride!), common sense tends to go out the door with some visitors. Dark rides are notorious for camera flashes! Read our guide on how to survive Disney’s busiest days here! Keep in mind that a lot of the time, folks might not even realize what they’re up to! “Vacation brain” is totally a weird thing and it can affect all of us sooner or later. Between the heat, the crowds, the excitement, and perhaps the lack of sleep, we are all known to make questionable choices every now and then! A VERY Crowded Magic Kingdom Just keep in mind that Cast Members want you to have a fun vacation, but they also want you to be SAFE while you do so! So if a Cast Member asks you to stand behind a yellow line or to stop running, it’s not because they want to ruin your trip — they just want to keep you safe and smiling. We’ve ALL been there — read about some of the mistakes we’ve made at Disney World! Smells On Rides! Disney World is all about the sights, sounds, and yes, SMELLS! It’s been proven that people strongly associate memories with smells, and Disney brings this to the next level. Ever heard someone still go on and on about the smell of oranges on Horizons in Epcot…in the 1980s? 2020 Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival Smells can be a powerful memory, and Disney takes advantage of that on their rides! Some are barely noticeable, while others, like the smell of fresh grass or flowers on Soarin’ Around the World, are hard to miss! Soarin’ Around the World at Epcot Other rides where you’ll find scents include Mickey’s PhilharMagic, Journey Into Imagination with Figment, Spaceship Earth (hopefully before AND after its renovation!), It’s Tough to Be a Bug, Flight of Passage, and Pirates of the Caribbean. Some of Disney World’s resort hotels pipe specific scents into their lobbies (very subtle, but absolutely there). And of course we can’t forget that intoxicating scent of popcorn and waffle-cones-in-progress on Main Street USA! For Disney World die-hards, the smells of Disney World are some of the most triggering messages that you’re back on vacation! See our FULL list of upcoming rides and attractions at Disney World in 2020 here! It is NOT a Small World After All At nearly 40 square miles, the sheer size of Walt Disney World is overwhelming. Even with a comprehensive and complex transportation system — by boat, by roadway, by Monorail, and now by sky thanks to the Skyliner — many casual visitors neglect to factor in just how long travel can take between each location. Disney Skyliner Especially for those familiar with the walkable Disneyland property, most places are completely UN-walkable at Walt Disney World. Preparation is key! Learn how to navigate the transportation system like a pro with our tips and tricks. Cresent Lake Ferry Boat We always recommend factoring in extra EXTRA time when planning your travel time between locations. Buses break down, Monorails get delayed, and the Skyliner can close unexpectedly. And, depending on what resort you’re staying at, those internal bus loops at some resort hotels can add upwards of an extra thirty minutes to your commute time! Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa has a particularly long internal bus loop! That can seriously add up first thing in the morning when all you want to do is get to the parks. It can also add up at the end of the night when all you want to do is go to bed! Resorts like Caribbean Beach, Coronado Springs, Old Key West, and Saratoga Springs are notorious for having massive internal bus loops, so keep that in mind when choosing your resort. Read more about some recent changes made to Disney World’s transportation system here! It May Be Tough To Meet Your Favorite Character Due to the sheer size of Disney World, there is simply too much to do it ALL on most vacations. So be prepared to possibly miss out on a ride or two, or that character you wanted to meet, or that snack you wanted to try. Combine the size of Disney World with those massive crowds, and it will be even harder to do ALL the things you want to do! Remember, character meet and greets are temporarily discontinued upon the initial reopening of the parks. But we expect our Disney friends will be back, so if you’re planning a trip for a further future date, take note of these tips! Magic Kingdom Crowds Ultimately, the best way to navigate this scenario is two-fold: plan ahead with your priorities in mind, and be prepared to be flexible. To help, we have COUNTLESS articles on planning your Disney vacation, especially during those busy seasons. We also have a great guide on all things FastPass, to make sure you’re prepared to make those reservations to your must-see attractions. Flight of Passage Unfortunately, long gone are the days of just casually stumbling upon your favorite characters. These interactions need to be pre-booked with a FastPass+ reservation, Character Meals, or face waiting in lengthy lines. And the big guy, Mickey, can be the hardest of them all to meet. Mickey Meet and Greet Want to meet Mickey while you eat? Read our ranking of the Mickey character meals here! There are cases when you can happen upon your favorite character, like Character Palooza, but those opportunities are few and far between. If meeting a certain character is an absolute must during your trip, we suggest planning ahead! Daisy and Donald Duck at the Beach Club Resort Check My Disney Experience for a list of characters in each park and when and where they meet. You can plan your character interactions out long before you’re standing in the parks, and possibly avoid some of the lengthier waits by booking a meal with characters. Check out our favorite character meals here! You Have To Know What You’d Like To Eat 6 Months in Advance As we mentioned with attractions and character must-dos, planning is crucial. If you’re looking to get those coveted dining reservations at popular spots, you’re going to have to be ready to book them 180 days in advance. YEP. You’ll need to know what you’d like to eat for dinner 6 months in advance. Where else do you need to pick a meal so far out ahead of time?! Advanced Dining Reservations If you plan to stick to counter service throughout your trip, then you don’t need to plan quite so far ahead, but we know for many, part of the allure of a Disney vacation is snagging a reservation at popular spots, like California Grill or Be Our Guest Restaurant. If plans change, you can always cancel your reservation up to 24 hours ahead before incurring a fee. Be Our Guest Ballroom This is also important to keep in mind — people’s plans change, so if you don’t get that coveted reservation 180 days out, keep checking! You can often find GREAT reservations at some hard-to-get restaurants if you keep checking back. Read all about booking dining at Disney World here! You Can Celebrate Halloween in August and Christmas in November! Disney World takes the holiday season VERY seriously. Those looking to really immerse themselves in the Halloween or Christmas spirit will have an easy way to do so if they time their vacations right! For Halloween, Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is a frightfully fun ticketed event, filled with specialty merchandise, food offerings, and of course that Boo To You parade, led by the Headless Horseman! Headless Horseman is the harbinger of the Boo To You Parade Read all about Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party here! Getting into the Halloween spirit is pretty easy to do in October and even in September (despite the fact that it’s still sweltering hot outside in Central Florida), but lately Disney has gone a step further and has started the Halloween parties in AUGUST. Didn’t think you’d be trick-or-treating THAT early in the season, did you? Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Likewise, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party starts almost immediately after Halloween, in early November. Mickey’s Very Merry Parade So, if you want to celebrate Halloween before the kids even head back to school from summer break, or if you want to celebrate Christmas before you sit down for Thanksgiving dinner, you can do that at Disney World! Learn more about Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party here! With a little bit of research and planning, you will be MORE than prepared to take whatever the Most Magical Place on Earth throws at you. Whether it’s the insane weather, bizarre mad dashes for merchandise, or confusing transportation, you can quickly become a Disney Pro — and then YOU can be the one to warn all your friends about the weird stuff! Amphicars Sign While a car usually costs $125 for a 20-minute ride, a Cast Member told us today that the Amphicars are currently being discounted to $75 for the same amount of time! He also told us guests aren’t allowed in the front seat right now. Instead, two or three people can sit (or squeeze) in the back of the car as you take in the sights and sounds of Disney Springs. Amphicar Although he wasn’t sure how long the discount would run through, the Cast Member shared there’s a possibility it would continue as long as the front seat is off-limits. If you’re not ready to take the plunge, or you’re just waiting your turn, don’t forget to pay attention to the distancing markers on the ground around the Amphicar loading dock. 12. In response to recent events, the Walt Disney Company has released a statement addressing their approach and stance on “issues of racial disparity.” Walt Disney Company Logo Today, Walt Disney Company chairman Bob Iger tweeted about the statement, noting it was endorsed by himself, Disney CEO Bob Chapek, and Chief Diversity Officer Latondra Newton. Walt Disney Company Chairman Bob Iger In the statement, the company references recent events in Minneapolis as well as “other instances of lethal attacks and harassment of unarmed black citizens in our nation.” The recent killing of George Floyd as well as other instances of lethal attacks and harassment of unarmed black citizens in our nation continue to drive outrage and calls for action by people of all cultural backgrounds, including many of our employees. Feelings of grief and anger cause us to confront the inscrutable idea that the lives of some are deemed less valuable – and less worthy of dignity, care and protection – than the lives of others. The statement confirms the Walt Disney Company’s dedication to “fostering a culture that acknowledges our people’s feelings and their pain,” and notes that they will continue to “further strengthen our commitment to diversity and inclusion.” In conclusion, the statement calls for honest discussion to activate change and seek solutions. We intend to focus our efforts and resources to compassionately and constructively talk about these matters openly and honestly as we seek solutions. We intend to keep the conversation going, not just today, but for as long as it takes to bring about real change. You can read the entire statement on the Walt Disney Company website here. 15. Epcot will reopen on July 15th with a BUNCH of new health and safety protocols. Epcot While guests can expect dining, shopping, and waiting in line to look different, a reported new union agreement suggests that World Showcase could have a BIG change as well. One of the most unique parts about Epcot’s World Showcase (beyond all the food, of course!) is that each pavilion is staffed by cultural representatives from each country. These Cast Members help to immerse you in each country and can teach guests fun phrases and facts about that location! Takumi-Tei Cast Members in Epcot’s Japan But according to LaughingPlace.com, when Epcot reopens, these cultural representatives may be missing from World Showcase. A reported agreement between the Walt Disney Company and labor unions states that Cast Members who “do not meet the culturally authentic theming at Epcot may be temporarily assigned to work in positions which are otherwise reserved for cultural representatives.” Rose and Crown Outside Bar Disney previously suspended the cultural representatives program in March and furloughed non-essential employees. And with travel restrictions in place around the world, it may be hard for some of these Cast Members to return to Orlando. Mexico Pavilion Of course, we will be sure to check out this situation once Epcot reopens (because situations can always change, especially in Disney World) and we will report back on our findings. What Epcot and the rest of Walt Disney World will look like upon reopening is yet to be seen, but be assured we’ll be there when it happens! Are you planning on going to Walt Disney World when it reopens? Here are 5 things you NEED to know! How do you feel about cultural representatives possibly missing from Epcot? 17. Lamplight Lounge at Disney California Adventure’s Pixar Pier brings the flavors of childhood together with the class and elegance of adulthood (yes, you’re classy). Views of Pixar Pier from Lamplight Lounge And now you can make one of these recipes in your own kitchen! Lamplight Lounge’s Peanut Butter and Jelly Rolls use some of your pantry staples to create a snack that children and adults can both love! So put on your favorite Disney playlist and lets get cooking! PB&J Roll Plate Ingredients 8 slices wheat bread 3/4 cup creamy peanut butter, divided 3/4 cup strawberry or grape jelly Preparation For Peanut Butter Rolls Cut crusts off bread. Flatten bread with rolling pin until bread can bind after being rolled. Spread 1 1/2 tablespoons of peanut butter evenly on each slice of flattened bread, leaving small boarder on all sides – the peanut butter will spread as you roll. Starting with long side of bread, gently roll up each bread slice into spiral. Cut each roll into 4 even pieces. Place 8 pieces of rollups onto each plate, seam-side down. For Jelly Drizzle Place plastic quart-size freezer bag into small cup, folding back first few inches of bag over top of cup. Spoon jelly into bag, gently shaking bag to move jelly to bottom of bag. (Note: If jelly is too thick to drizzle, add small amount of warm water to jelly in small bowl and mix to desired consistency before adding to bag). Once filled, lift bag from cup and squeeze out excess air from bag and seal bag with a few twists to top of bag. Cut bottom corner of bag with scissors. Holding right below the twisted top of bag with one hand and guiding with free hand, gently squeeze to drizzle jelly over each peanut butter roll with zigzag motion. After all, we’d been saying for years PRIOR that Disney really needed its own Star Wars cantina. Read our FIRST REACTION to the new “Star Wars Land” announcement back in 2015 here! Following Construction and Developments Between D23 and opening day, we eagerly followed all of the exciting developments! We discussed the big news when we learned that alcohol would be served at Oga’s Cantina — a first at Disneyland with the exception of Club 33! Oga’s Cantina Concept Art ©Disney We also lost our MINDS when we saw the Millennium Falcon appear during the construction phase! Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Construction in Disneyland ©heliguy As we moved closer and closer to the opening date in 2019, more details emerged on just how Disney was planning on bringing the Star Wars universe to life! We got a first glimpse of those ‘thermal detonator’ Coca Cola bottles, and all of a sudden, soda bottles became THE most exciting news of the day. Exclusive Coca-Cola Packaging ©Disney We also got a glimpse at the “datapads” via the Play Parks App! We were stoked to see how much interactive technology was being brought to Galaxy’s Edge! Look back at more of the exciting developments we were following ahead of Galaxy’s Edge here! That darn reservation system! One of the most puzzling but groundbreaking aspects of Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland was the use of their unique reservation system. Although the land had its grand opening on May 31, 2019, for the first few weeks guests could ONLY access the land through having a hotel reservation (these automatically gave you a 4-hour stint in Galaxy’s Edge) or booking an advance reservation. ©Disney Those reservations launched on May 2, 2019 and were gone within hours. Guests who did not acquire a reservation could still access the land if they had a booked stay at one of the three Disneyland Resort hotels (oh yeah…which also sold out for the night before the land opened!). The reservations gave the guests a total of four hours in the land. ©Disney We shared discussions on how that 4-hour window would be enforced! Remember when we thought we were gonna be escorted out by Stormtroopers!? Storm Troopers Patrolling Galaxy’s Edge Turns out these guys didn’t end up roughing up guests to get out after their allotted time, but it sounded cool when it was first proposed! Read our first thoughts about the unique reservation system here! First Steps into Galaxy’s Edge and A Moving Dedication Ceremony The day finally arrived for us to take our first steps into Galaxy’s Edge! Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland We took flight on Millennium Falcon Smugger’s Run for the first time! Initially, the land’s flagship ride, Rise of the Resistance, wouldn’t be opening in either coast’s lands. This ride opened in January 2020 for Disneyland and December 2019 for Disney World! Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run And after YEARS of wishing and waiting, we finally got to visit an authentic Star Wars cantina inside a Disney Park! Dreams DO come true! Oga’s Cantina We got to try all of the delicious drinks…! Rainbow of Drinks at the Cantina These pre-mixed drinks are all really fun, and some even have some…surprising elements to them! Click here to see our full review of Oga’s Cantina! And of course, we braved the Milk Stand for the very first time to try the infamous Blue Milk and Green Milk! Traditional Green Milk and Blue Milk And who can forget when (of course!) we found a way to hack our milk super quickly! Milk Hack! If you want to try this hack too, order both flavors of milk and ask for an extra cup! Click here to see what we thought of blue and green milk! We ate just about EVERYTHING in Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo, the land’s new quick-service restaurant. Our First Taste of Fried Tip Yip The spot has something for just about everyone, even if the names of foods do seem a bit strange (more on that in a bit!). Click here for our first full look at Docking Bay 7! This spot was also home of the original SPORKS! If you don’t recall, this location originally intended to use metal sporks as reusable cutlery for guests, but due to the COOL look of the sporks, guests quickly began pocketing these as DIY souvenirs. Original Spork at Docking Bay 7 This led Disney to pull the sporks and offer standard (read: BORING!) utensils. Womp womp. (SPOILER ALERT — when Galaxy’s Edge opened in Disney World, they tried again with the sporks and the SAME THING happened!) FYI — now you can BUY your sporks in Disneyland ;-D. Click here to read more about Spork-gate in Galaxy’s Edge! And how could we forget our first sweet, sweet taste of a Ronto Wrap from Ronto Roasters (can you believe it’s only been a year that we’ve had these in our lives?!). Hello, Gorgeous! This wrap filled with pork sausage, roasted pork, slaw, and a creamy peppercorn sauce was one of the shining stars of Galaxy’s Edge! Oh yeah — they have a killer breakfast wrap TOO! Click here to read more about our love, the Ronto Wrap! Rounding out the food offering in Galaxy’s Edge, we have to mention Kat Saka’s Kettle. This little spot serves up the love-it-or-leave-it Outpost Mix. We’ll always remember our first taste of this treat. Outpost Popcorn Mix This popcorn is a mix of spicy (the red pieces) and kind of fruity-sweet (the purple pieces). Who would have thought one of the most divisive things in Galaxy’s Edge would be simple popcorn!? Click here to learn more about Outpost Mix! Oh, and we can’t forget about the unique merchandise we got to check out for the first time! We built a droid at Droid Depot AND a lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop. Droid Depot Both experiences were really fun and unique, especially Savi’s. We loved getting to pick out our own Kyber Crystal and build our VERY OWN saber we could tote around all day! Click here for our experience building a lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop! One of the most memorable events surrounding the opening of Galaxy’s Edge was the dedication ceremony that took place on May 30. Star Wars icons George Lucas, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Billy Dee Williams joined former CEO Bob Iger for the ceremony. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge It was a star-studded kickoff for the land — even Chewbacca showed up in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon!! Read more about our first day inside Galaxy’s Edge here! Opening Day: May 31! At last, we have reached the official opening day of Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge! There was so much to take in and, surprisingly, a lot to LEARN (why are all these people saying “Bright suns” to me?!). Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge Inhabitants of Batuu One of the biggest stories that day was actually about what was happening OUTSIDE the land. Collectors everywhere were relieved to hear that Galaxy’s Edge opening day merchandise would be sold throughout the park, no land reservation required! We had originally heard Galaxy’s Edge related merch would ONLY be sold “on planet,” meaning inside the land, so this was welcome news for many who couldn’t get in opening day! Cleared Landing for Galaxy’s Edge! For those with reservations on opening day, everyone was learning just how fast four hours can fly by, and folks tried to strategize how to best use their time. Galaxy’s Edge Design As for us? Yeah, we were mostly in the Cantina. Sorry, not sorry. Click here to learn more about the overall experience in Galaxy’s Edge! Beyond Opening Day…what has happened since?! A lot can happen in one year, and that has certainly been the case with Galaxy’s Edge! Once the reservation window passed, Disneyland had a virtual standby queue ready to go in case crowds were out of control. (Ah, back in the day when this was all we knew of virtual queues…that’s CHANGED since then, as you’ll see below!) Galaxy’s Edge Info Sign in Disneyland Park Read more about the first day of regular admission to Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland here! As Disneyland became well acquainted with its new land, attention shifted to Florida, as the opening of Disney World’s version of Galaxy’s Edge was set for August 29, 2019. Entrance to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Hollywood Studios Florida had a much quieter opening than California. The pomp and circumstance seen at Disneyland’s opening and dedication was noticeably absent from the Florida version. A couple fireworks, a quick word from Bob Chapek, and the land was open for business! Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Dedication Ceremony Crowds were consistent for most of its first few months of operations, but definitely not the overwhelming sea of guests many had anticipated. It initially seemed like the land wasn’t the smash-hit Disney had intended it to be with a BIG notable exception — we were still waiting for Rise of the Resistance. Would that one ride be enough to tie the whole experience together and make it a hit?? Rise of the Resistance Ride Vehicle Over the past several months, we’ve seen a ton of exciting new FOOD options come to Galaxy’s Edge! Our beloved Ronto Wrap over at Ronto Roasters saw a couple of sister wraps appear on the menu, including a Chicken Ronto Wrap in Florida and a Ronto-less Wrap in California! Chicken Ronto Wrap We saw some new popcorn flavors emerge over at Kat Saka’s Kettle. Some were an instant hit, like the chocolate and red salt popcorn in Disneyland, while other flavors like the Galaxy Green popcorn in Disney World were…interesting, but boring…and didn’t make a splash. Galaxy Green Popcorn We’ve also enjoyed following the saga at Oga’s Cantina as they attempt to come up with a palatable charcuterie board. Once a secret menu item, it’s now available on their regular menu and has always been a puzzling assortment of goodies (umm, PRE-PULLED string cheese, pork rinds, and SPAM, anyone?!). Charcuterie Board at Oga’s Over at Docking Bay 7, the menu items seemed to go through a bit of an identity crisis for a while! It seemed some guests couldn’t wrap their heads around some of the heavily-themed food names that they were pushing when the land first opened. A lot of the Star Wars-themed names were dropped in favor of more conventional, recognizable names. Endorian Fried Chicken Tip Yip But realizing they might have oversteered, Disney reverted back — partially — to the old style names. For instance, instead of “Fried Endorian Tip Yip,” this item was initially changed to just “Fried Chicken,” then landed at “Fried Endorian Chicken Tip Yip.” We also saw some really unique breakfast foods pop up at the Milk Stand in Disney World recently. Now guests can pick up a tomatoey Saka Farm Egg Bite, Wamba Yogurt Cup (made with green milk!), and the otherworldly-colored Green Milk Bread Pudding! Green Milk Bread Pudding We weren’t the biggest fans of the flavor of green milk to begin with, so we were on the fence with these breakfast options. The Egg Bite was delicious though! Click here to see our review of these new breakfast options in Galaxy’s Edge! And lest we forget, the SPORKS CAME BACK! Well, sort of. The sporks we saw come and go from Docking Bay 7 came back as a souvenir available for purchase, but only in Disneyland! Sporks Guests can pick one up when they order at Docking Bay 7. It even comes with a cute carrying case that says “spork” in Aurebesh (the Star Wars language you’ll find all over Galaxy’s Edge and the films!) Click here to learn more about the return of the SPORKS to Galaxy’s Edge! Perhaps the BIGGEST event in the past year was the opening of Rise of the Resistance on both coasts! We were promised something BIG, and Disney did not disappoint! The ride is one of the most technologically advanced, breathtaking rides we’ve EVER seen. Does it live up to the hype? Yeah. Big time. Rise of the Resistance Seriously, if there’s one part of Galaxy’s Edge worth your time, it’s this ride. Want to see our in-depth review of the ride? Click here! The flip side to the awesomeness of Rise of the Resistance? EVERYONE AND THEIR UNCLE WANTS TO RIDE IT! Thus began the infamous virtual queue system, which, like the version we saw when Disneyland’s Galaxy’s Edge opened, meant guests had to be IN the park to be able to secure a spot in line with a boarding group. Rise of the Resistance opening day in Disneyland Since a limited number of boarding group spots were available each day, this meant guests were lining up to get in the parks HOURS before their scheduled opening time. We got REALLY good at waking up at 3AM to get one of these elusive boarding groups!! Crazy? Yes. Worth it? Still yes. Hollywood Studios Before Park Opening Waiting to Get Boarding Groups for Rise of the Resistance Galaxy’s Edge was popular, but NOTHING like once Rise finally opened, completing the lands on both coasts. Disney made a BIG promise when they announced Galaxy’s Edge and, for the most part, we think they delivered. The land is immersive and totally unique from anything we’ve seen before at both Disney World and Disneyland. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance And now, we can only speculate what is to come to Galaxy’s Edge in both Disneyland and Disney World. Will we see a third attraction? Perhaps a table service restaurant? Will we see new shows or character interactions? And the question on everyone’s mind…will those boarding groups EVER go away? While we may not have the answers yet, we do know that if the first year of Galaxy’s Edge is any indication, ANYTHING is possible! Happy birthday, Galaxy’s Edge! 23. Recently, a nationally-recognized panel of medical experts informed members of the music community it could be a long time before large ensembles could rehearse or perform together due to safety concerns from the global health crisis. Lebendig in Germany Pavilion This realization was felt by chorus groups, theater performers, and opera companies who may need to rethink their craft for the next several months or maybe longer. After hearing this story first reported by the Press Herald, the wheels in our heads started turning — something like this could have huge implications on Disney World’s many stage performances. Festival of the Lion King As we now know, the simulated social distance testing Shanghai Disneyland was conducting for its live stage shows wasn’t indicative of musical performances resuming once the parks reopened. Now that Shanghai Disneyland has started its phased reopening, performances and firework displays still haven’t started back up. Shanghai Disneyland At first, it seemed this decision was being made out of an abundance of caution to prevent large groups of guests from gathering at the parks, but now we’re realizing Shanghai Disneyland’s reasoning might have more to do with keeping its performers safe as well. After all, audience members can be physically spaced out by groups to ensure proper distancing. For those performing on stage, however, the solution is not so simple. Frozen Sing-along Celebration in Disney’s Hollywood Studios And here’s another consideration: singing is all about breathing and expelling air from the lungs. Since the virus is spread through the air, this is very problematic for vocalists. Performers in choirs or large groups could accidentally transmit the virus to each other even if they’re following the normal six-feet-apart rule. Medical professionals are stating the virus can travel up to 16 feet when expelled. Standard social distancing practices aren’t going to cut it for singers. Voyage of The Little Mermaid Masks such as N95s could be worn by choir members, but it’s likely to muffle the wearer’s voice and make it difficult for performers to breathe. At this time, we don’t know what alterations Disney World will be making for its musical performances, but there are several productions that are likely to be impacted. Disney World Theater Shows Disney’s Animal Kingdom offers numerous musical performances including The Festival of the Lion King and Finding Nemo. Festival of The Lion King And Disney’s Hollywood Studios features live vocalists in its productions of the Frozen Sing-Along, Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage, Disney Junior – Live on Stage! and Voyage of The Little Mermaid. A Christmas Tradition The holidays are still a long way off and a lot could happen between now and then, but in order for a big Disney World Christmas tradition known as the Candlelight Processional to take place in Epcot each night, some major modifications will likely need to be implemented. Conducting the Candlelight Processional Choir members comprise the annual “Christmas tree-shaped” ensemble, while the nighty performance held at the America Gardens Theatre also includes an orchestral accompaniment and celebrity narrator. Learn more about the Candlelight Processional here! Magic Music Days Disney World regularly invites school and community choirs to perform for guests in the parks. Magic Kingdom These performances typically take place in outdoor areas in Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Disney Springs. Epcot Festivals Several bands and performers are featured at Epcot’s many festivals, both on the main stage in the American pavilion as well as smaller stages throughout the World Showcase. Rock out at the Garden Rocks concerts! While many of Epcot’s 2020 Flower and Garden Festival performers had to cancel their shows when the parks closed in mid-March, the 2020 Food and Wine Festival’s Eat to the Beat concert series might be impacted as well. Disney World’s website states guests should expect some modifications when the parks reopen. After knowing what we know now, it seems likely one of the things we might not see right away are live shows at Disney World. Do you think Disney should allow live vocal performances to resume when the parks reopen? Let us know in the comments.
