  1. Happy pre-Holidays, everybody! July 25th was officially named “Christmas in July” by Disney, and we totally used it as an excuse to watch some of our favorite Christmas movies early. Gingerbread House Although Halloween is just around the corner, one of the Disney Resorts is making things merry and bright with some desserts that will make you gingerbread and peppermint fans very happy! We’re celebrating Christmas in July the Disney way with a little extra sweetness! While we were at The Artist’s Palette in Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort, we noticed not one but TWO Christmas Cupcakes out for guests to enjoy. Christmas in July Cupcakes And, of course, we couldn’t resist grabbing them both while we were there! The Peppermint Cupcake was a chocolate cake filled with peppermint mousse and topped with peppermint scented whipped cream and a little peppermint bark candy. Peppermint Cupcake If you’re a big fan of peppermint flavor, this Christmas in July Cupcake packed a punch! The peppermint mousse filling was VERY minty (but we loved the contrast to the chocolate flavor). The whipped cream on top was a lot lighter, but still had a hint of that peppermint flavor. Plus, the peppermint bark added a nice crunch along with the chocolate crisps that kind of made us feel like we were snacking on a candy cane. Peppermint Cupcake But, the Gingerbread Cupcake was mixed up with completely different flavors, leaning towards a spiced cake and gingerbread spiced buttercream instead. (And, it was just as good as it sounds!) Gingerbread Cupcake The gingerbread filling on the inside was the same buttercream used in the frosting, so there was plenty of wonderful spiciness all throughout the treat. The cake was nice and light, but was still moist. However, the leaf topper cookie reminded us more of a shortbread cookie with just a bit of gingerbread spice to it. After having the Gingerbread Cupcake, we’re definitely ready for Gingerbread Lattes to be back in season. Gingerbread Cupcake Although we’re still a few months away from gingerbread and hot chocolate during the holidays again, we couldn’t help but feel a little bit of the Christmas spirit with these treats for $5.99 each! A Cast Member told us that they might be around for a few more days at The Artist’s Palette, so be sure to pick these up if you’re staying at Saratoga Springs. Take a look at all the Christmas merchandise coming to the Disney Parks this year! What is your favorite Christmas treat to have in Disney World? Let us know in the comments below! While we’ve already seen the Winking Mickey Loungefly Backpack in Disney World, now you can round out your accessories with a mini version with the wristlet! Winking Mickey Wristlet Although the Loungefly backpack is white, the black wristlet is a teeny backpack that you can stick your lipstick, Annual Passholder card, and extra face mask inside for $40. It’s way too cute to pass up when you’re in Downtown Disney!! Winking Mickey Wristlet Plus, you can pair it with the Winking Mickey Loungefly Wallet. 3. Disney World has new health and safety guidelines to help keep guests and Cast Members safe on property, like temperature checks and distancing measures. Cinderella Castle As the policies around the parks continue changing, Disney World has been informing guests about what guidelines they will need to follow through signs and overhead announcements. Since this is an unprecedented situation, Disney has been updating and changing their policies frequently. According to Scott Gustin, Disney has updated their face mask policy again to state that masks with valves, holes, or mesh material are not allowed during this time. Guests are also not able to wear neck gaiters or open-chin triangle bandanas. People coming to Disney World will need to stop, be stationary, and stay distanced to eat or drink in the parks as Disney continues to change their health and safety guidelines in accordance with the evolving situation. However, Relaxation Stations are available for guests to safely distance themselves from others and take off their mask during a break. Face Covering Signs We’ll keep you updated when Disney World updates their website to reflect this new policy. And, while Disney continues adding to its policies around the parks, we will give you all the information you need to know before your next visit to Disney World! Take a look at Magic Kingdom’s recent health and safety survey here! What has your experience been like back in Disney World? Let us know in the comments below! 4. The Disney World parks have had to make a large number of health and safety changes recently. Cinderella Castle And these changes always seem to be evolving. Since the situation constantly changes, Disney has been updating their mask policies, changing ride procedures, and doing what they can to keep experiences magical. When we first returned to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, we were asked questions about our own experience in the park to help Disney World continue to improve its new guidelines. Churro Although we’ve been back to Magic Kingdom a few times since its reopening on July 11th, we finally received a questionnaire about the safety measures in the parks. The survey really dived into what made us feel safe when we were there, how our experiences changed with the new procedures, and what we thought could have been better during our visit. Magic Kingdom Safety Survey Part of the biggest changes we’ve seen have been the wait times and crowd levels in Magic Kingdom. Since the parks are all operating with lower capacity, those regular 2-hour+ lines for rides haven’t been around for even the most popular attractions. Plus, Disney World hasn’t been wanting guests to be in the parks first thing in the morning so they can reduce some of the traffic and crowds. Magic Kingdom Safety Survey While some of the bigger changes have happened with actually getting into the parks, guests also have to consider if they are properly “dressed” to go inside with face masks (with no gaiters or bandanas allowed). Although we’ve seen people following the rules pretty well, Disney has also had to update its policies around drinking and eating so people aren’t walking around with their masks off in the parks. Magic Kingdom Safety Survey The survey also wanted to know how guests felt about some of the other health and safety measures put in safe (like temperature checks) and what the key measures were that made people feel safer during their visit. Magic Kingdom Safety Survey But, the survey wasn’t completely about safety since many of the experiences have changed in the parks too! Magic Kingdom Safety Survey Since there are no character meet-and-greets or parades at the moment, the Character Cavalcades and character sightings around the parks have been a new way for guests to see them throughout the day at a safe distance. And, we have honestly LOVED the new cavalcades and motorcades since we’ve been able to spot multiple characters you wouldn’t normally see out and about. Magic Kingdom Safety Survey However, Disney World has also dropped some of its other experiences that do affect guests’ time in the parks. Some of the questions the survey asked also surrounded the inability to use FastPasses, park-hopping, or watch fireworks (and how that impacted people’s days overall). Magic Kingdom Safety Survey The survey also asked about some of the dining procedures now that Mobile Order is primarily being used in quick-service locations and character dining is limited to only a few places around the parks and resorts. Magic Kingdom Safety Survey Although the survey was VERY long, it was also detailed to make sure that Disney was covering all possible ground in response to our visit to the park. Since Disney World has been operating in new ways, it’s important for guests to continue giving their feedback so the parks are able to make changes that are both big and small to make experiences safer (while hanging onto that magic we know and love). Mickey and Friends Character Cavalcade While we keep checking out the new health and safety measures in the parks, we’ll continue to give you updates on what you can expect the next time you visit Disney World! Here’s what our readers thought about bringing their kids to a newly re-opened Disney World! What have your experiences been like back in Disney World? Let us know in the comments below! 8. After the longest closure in Disney World history, the parks have now reopened to guests. Main Street, U.S.A. Upon reopening, the parks implemented a number of new safety measures for the health of both guests and Cast Members. These changes include reduced park capacity, Disney Park Pass reservations required for entry, face masks required for all Cast Members and guests age two and older, social distancing measures, and more. But, despite the precautions Disney has put in place, there have still been concerns raised over the reopening of the parks. These worries have been amplified given the rising case numbers in Florida, which have led the state to roll back some reopenings as we saw with the shuttering of bars back in June. Jock Lindsey’s Given the ever-evolving nature of the situation, we wanted to know how our readers feel about heading to Disney World with their families. So, we asked our Instagram followers, “Would you feel comfortable bringing your kids to Disney World right now?” And our readers were quick to send in their responses! Of the first 708 people who responded, 283 said yes, they would bring their kids to Disney World right now, and 425 said no. Here’s a visual breakdown of the responses! Pie Chart of Our Readers’ Responses When Asked If They Would Bring Their Kids to Disney World Right Now Let’s take a closer look at some of the common reasons our readers gave behind their answers. “Yes, I would take my kids to Disney World right now.” Of our readers who responded, 40% said yes, they would take their kids to Disney World right now. Animal Kingdom Several people mentioned that they have been impressed by the amount of health and safety precautions Disney is taking. “Yes, I trust Disney is doing the right things and I can add extra protection for my child.” Some readers also called out specific safety measures that made them feel more secure, like required masks and social distancing measures. Face Covering Sign Other readers also pointed out that they would feel safer traveling to Disney World than other places — whether on vacation or day-to-day activities. “Yes, I’m sure it’s safer at Disney than a grocery store. They don’t mess around.” Have you seen the recent updates to the mask policy at Disney World? “No, I would not take my kids to Disney World right now.” On the other hand, 60% said no, they wouldn’t take their kids to Disney World right now. Epcot Many people in this group mentioned the increased number of cases in the state, and some also pointed out that while the parks are taking precautions, other places around the area aren’t as diligent. “Not right now with all the cases in Florida. I’d feel safe in the park, but not getting there.” Palm Trees Others also added that the temporary suspension of some of the entertainment around the parks would make the trip less fun for their children. “Nope and they don’t want to go right now anyway since character meets and fireworks aren’t happening.” Mickey at Topolino’s Terrace Some were concerned for children who had preexisting conditions or were immunocomprimised. “No. My son has severe asthma.” And for some, while the new precautions do make them feel safer, they’re worried that the kiddos could struggle with them. “I feel safe but my son is three and won’t keep his mask on so we rescheduled.” We even had several followers note that they would feel safe going personally, but they wouldn’t be comfortable bringing their kids in the current situation. We’ve spent lots of time wearing face masks in Disney World — here are the most comfortable ones we’ve found! So, while a number of our readers said they would bring their kids to Disney World right now, the majority said they are holding off for the moment. We’ll continue to head out to the parks to see how things are progressing — so be sure to stay tuned for more coverage of the reopened parks so you can make the right decision for your family! 12. It can be tricky to get your kiddo to wear face masks all day long at a theme park, especially the littlest of travelers. With Disney World’s current policy stating that all guests above the age of two must wear face masks at all times, it’s important to master the art of getting the littlest travelers to be comfortable. Disney Cloth Face Masks Some tricks that may work on your little one is to bring masks they will actually WANT to wear, as well as masks that are SUPER comfy. Here are ten types of masks (along with tips!) we’ve spotted so far that we think the kids will be more than happy with wearing all day. Masks That DON’T Tie Around Their Head In our experience, kids tend to be a little fussier when wearing masks that tie around the backs of their heads, especially when the fit isn’t “just right.” Mask that ties around the back of your head © Amazon Adults may find the masks that tie around their head more comfortable as it takes pressure off of the ears (and we found some highly rated ones on Amazon if you’re interested!), but for some kids, you’re better off going for masks with ear loops. And if your kid is fussy over the size of the loops not fitting perfectly, you can stock up on loop fasteners to keep the loops snug to their head. ©Amazon Face masks are something you definitely want to make sure fit comfortably on everyone, especially the young ones! What are THE comfiest face masks to wear all day in Disney World? Click here to find out! Masks with Fun Colors and Patterns Face masks are the new “must-have” accessory that gives us a unique opportunity to show a little bit of our personality, interests, and hobbies. The silver lining in all of this is that when you’re out in public, your face mask can be a new extension of your outfit! DFB Dino Face Mask The same goes for the youngest travelers. Before leaving for vacation, let your kids pick masks that include their favorite colors, patterns, and characters. Having them pick their favorites may make the mask-wearing process in the parks easier! There are TONS of mask options on sites like Etsy, so this could become a new fun activity to do with the family! Check out some of the DFB Face Masks! Used with loop fasteners, these should be good for kiddos, too! Masks Made With the Most Comfortable Material Although your kid may be excited first thing in the morning to wear their favorite new mask, if it’s not comfortable, they may rip it off by lunchtime. Sometimes it’s best to just stick with a basic black mask, like these on Amazon that come with lots of great reviews. They even come with a nose bridge wire which can be super helpful if you wear glasses. © Amazon Comfort is king! You could find the cutest masks in the world, but if it’s scratchy, doesn’t fit right, or is made with uncomfortable material, it could ruin your kiddo’s day. Rainbow Mickey Face Mask If your kid insists on wearing a certain mask that has uncomfortable ear loops, invest in some ear protectors on Amazon (they’re only $7.99 for a pack of five). © Amazon We have heard that masks made with double gauze cotton are EXTRA comfy and feel almost like those soft muslin baby blankets — doesn’t get much comfier than that! Be sure to take a look at the materials used to make the mask and don’t base your decisions solely on the fun design! Learn more about what does and does NOT qualify as a face mask in Disney World here! Masks That Were Actually Purchased AT Disney World Any old mask purchased online or at the local store is one thing, but how COOL would your kids feel if they had masks purchased AT Disney World!? 14. When it comes to conquering Disney World and making the most of your day in the parks, many guests would traditionally take advantage of “rope drop.” Not familiar? Each park previously would handle rope drop a bit differently, but basically it is the process of first opening the parks each day to guests or, for guests, the process of getting there EARLY to be one of the first people in the park. The name is based on a literal rope being draped across the front of land entrances before they opened for the day. Sometimes Cast Members would stretch a rope in front of the park opening crowd and walk them back to the most popular ride, reduing the ability of guests to run to the most popular attraction, which is obviously dangerous for other guests and Cast Members. What Rope Drop at Hollywood Studios looked like pre-closure But now, in a reopened Disney World, is rope drop still even a thing? Is it still worth it to wake up SUPER early and be among the first guests to enter the parks each day? Let’s take a look at what our experience has been like since the parks reopened and share our thoughts! Why did rope drop matter pre-closure? Before the parks closed, most guests would not arrive the moment a park opened each morning. In fact, the average guest would typically arrive a few hours AFTER park opening, whether that is because they had a breakfast reservation or they simply wanted a few extra hours of snoozing. This meant that the early guests got the chance to ride the most popular ride a time or two before the huge crowds arrived! Nothing beats a cup of coffee first thing in the morning at Disney World! Each park handled rope drop a bit differently. Magic Kingdom had a welcome show at the castle and guests could linger on Main Street, U.S.A. for some time before official park open for the day. Other parks would have ropes blocking off entrance to certain lands, or even the whole park. Early Morning on Main Street Those who frequently conquer rope drop know that they can typically score a few hours in the parks with lower crowds, meaning that those popular attractions can be checked off of those “to do” lists earlier. Read more on what exactly “Rope Drop” is (and its history) here! What have our rope drop experiences been like since the parks began reopening? From what we have experienced thus far, we have gotten the feeling that Disney is discouraging guests from congregating at the front of the parks like they used to when experiencing rope drop. Disney’s transportation hours have been limited, and guests have not been allowed to park in parking lots until right before park opening times. Monorail On a morning where Magic Kingdom opened at 9AM, the monorail began operation at 8:30AM, which doesn’t leave you with a whole lot of time to get inside the park early in the first place! And on a morning where Animal Kingdom opened at 8AM, we were not allowed into the parking lot until 7:40AM! Those parking lot hours also create a backlog of cars trying to enter at the same time, as we saw at EPCOT. Parking at EPCOT When you factor in steps like walking from your car to the park, and going through security screenings, odds are high that you may NOT make it into the park in time for rope drop right now. This may be intentional in an effort to reduce crowding and large groups at the gates. So is rope drop still a thing? Well, yeah, they still open the parks. But Disney is definitely discouraging the crowds gathering early — sometimes hours early — for park opening. See what our earliest experience was like getting to the reopened parks for rope drop here! Is rope drop still worth waking up for? In our experience since the parks reopened, being the FIRST guest in the most parks doesn’t have a lot of benefit. With limited capacity in the parks, it’s not difficult to experience every ride in a day; and most rides you’ll be able to ride multiple times in your day. Wait times across the board have been SIGNIFICANTLY lower on many popular attractions due to the limited capacity, including Flight of Passage in Animal Kingdom, which we have regularly seen at a FIVE MINUTE WAIT! Animal Kingdom Wait Times as of 4PM on July 11th With parking lots opening later, and Disney transportation running at limited capacity, rushing to be first in the park could be a much bigger hassle than waiting an hour and arriving a bit later. Plus being at the park first thing could actually be less than ideal since that initial rush of guests getting in first thing in the morning can cause crowding and backups. If you want to avoid crowds as much as possible, we recommend arriving around one hour or later after the parks open. You should still have plenty of time to ride everything you want to ride, even at Magic Kingdom! Magic Kingdom Keep in mind that Disney has suspended any morning shows that typically take place at park opening. Specifically at Magic Kingdom, there are no morning castle shows to welcome guests in the park, making “rope drop” much less of an event than it was prior. Check out what the crowds looked like on Magic Kingdom’s grand reopening day here! What about Hollywood Studios? Does it make sense to skip rope drop every day? We have one BIG exception to this rule. If you are visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios, we STILL recommend you try to make it into the park for rope drop. This is for a couple of reasons. Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway First, in our experience visiting the theme parks, Hollywood Studios felt very different than the other three parks. In fact, Hollywood Studios felt more like it did pre-closure than any of the other theme parks we’ve visited. This may be because of the number of sought-after rides AND various pinch points throughout the park where crowding can occur, but it definitely FELT more crowded. Crowds Entering Galaxy’s Edge With no shows or entertainment available at Hollywood Studios for the time being, that leaves only the rides for guests to check out. With fewer rides and shows to occupy guests, we saw significantly longer wait times at Hollywood Studios, especially for Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, which we’ve seen fill up its queue and have to turn guests away! Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway Queue Then there’s Rise of the Resistance. This is still the most popular attraction at Disney World, with those coveted Boarding Groups back and up for grabs. Rise of the Resistance Queue And they are just as coveted as they were pre-closure. Those Boarding Groups are STILL being snatched up like hotcakes at Hollywood Studios, with each of the distribution times filling up in a matter of minutes (or less!). Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance If you want to increase your chances of riding Rise of the Resistance, then it would behoove you to be at Disney’s Hollywood Studios BEFORE the official park opening time so that once 10AM on the dot hits, you’ll be INSIDE the park and can try for your first of two attempts at the elusive boarding groups (if you don’t get one, you can try again at 2PM!). See what it’s like to ride Rise of the Resistance at a reopened Hollywood Studios here! Overall, Disney World is certainly treating rope drop a little differently than it has in the past. Once a challenging yet fun way to kick off your day, it’s now almost not worth it unless you want to try your luck at a 10AM Boarding Group for Rise of the Resistance. But overall, due to limited capacity in the parks, it is generally VERY easy to ride every ride you want on a given day, so don’t stress if you can’t make it inside the gates at opening! Do you typically take advantage of rope drop when you visit Disney World? Do you think you’ll continue to do so while capacity is limited? Let us know in the comments! Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge And while it’s always a blast to visit Batuu, we’re also thrilled to read an entire world of new Star Wars content that takes us back to the beginning! The Hollywood Reporter has stated that the new Star Wars: The High Republic book will be connected to Marvel’s Star Wars comic books from 2015. ©Star Wars During the Disney-Lucasfilm Publishing panel at Comic-Con at Home, the author Justina Ireland stated that her book in the series set hundreds of years before Star Wars: A New Hope will be connected to Sana Starros. She let fans know that the ruthless scoundrel’s lineage will be dived into since The High Republic is set centuries before her story begins. ©Star Wars Instead, fans will meeting her “great, great, many-times-great ancestor [but] there won’t be a direct relation there because genetics are murky in the Star Wars galaxy.” Avon Starros will be one of the co-leads in the new book The High Republic: A Test of Courage. Stormtroopers Ireland has also revealed to fans that, “Avon is a 12-year-old girl, she has been sent to the edge of the galaxy by her mother who’s a republic senator because she’s just trouble. She is a scientist and the only things she wants to know are the answers to the questions that drive her. So, ‘How does the Force work, from a scientific perspective?’ That might be something a scientist would want to know. ‘What happens if you take a khyber crystal out of a lightsaber, what does that look like?’” Rey and Chewbacca The new book will be released in January 2021 with Amy Ratcliffe’s The Art of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge book following afterwards in the spring that will dive into the artwork, blueprints, and more of the lands. We can’t wait to hear more about the Star Wars universe before Luke, Leia, Han, and all our other favorite characters! Here are all the Star Wars characters you can see out in a re-opened Disney World! Have you read any of The High Republic books yet? Let us know in the comments below! 16. With the Disney+ Original Series “Muppets Now” set to stream its highly anticipated first episode on July 31, I received special permission from our friends at the Muppets Studio to share with you a little clip of Kermit the Frog discussing the show with me on stage last October aboard the Disney Vacation Club Member Cruise. Part of what made this special presentation in the Disney Magic ship’s Walt Disney Theatre so cool was the rare opportunity it presented for the audience to see Muppets and their human performer together on stage. That human was the extraordinarily talented Matt Vogel, who in addition to performing with Kermit during our show, performed with the Electric Mayhem’s Floyd (who spoke of his love for the “it’s a small world” attraction, saying “It’s a prayer for peace, man!”), the boomerang-fish-slinging Lew Zealand (who threw fish into the crowd) and the ghastly Uncle Deadly (who performed lyrics from the Haunted Mansion anthem “Grim-Grinning Ghosts” as spoken-word poetry). Thanks to live tight shots from our camera crew on screens flanking the stage, Members in attendance saw Muppets on Walt Disney Theatre screens just as they’d appear on TV or cinema screens, while simultaneously seeing their human Muppet performer working his magic on stage. It was like being on the set of an actual Muppets Studio production (if said production was in the middle of the ocean). In this fun clip from our show, Kermit gives Disney Vacation Club Members a sneak peek at “Muppets Now,” which was in the earliest stages of production when we sailed. You’ll see that he runs into a little trouble with the studio’s legal department, proving once again that stars are just like us. As Kermit has become a good personal friend since our cruise (a fact that delights my inner child to no end), I asked him to introduce the clip in this video. For another inside look at “Muppets Now” before it starts streaming, here’s the video call during which Kermit shared the good news with the gang that Disney+ had given their series the green light. (Watch out for more meddling by their “legal weasel.”) View the full article
