As Disney Parks worldwide continue their phased reopenings, policies have been updated to reflect current guidance from health experts. Recently, we shared the news that Disney World updated their face mask policy, which now bans face masks with “valves, mesh material, or holes of any kind.” Updated face mask policy at Disney World In an unsurprising move, Disneyland also updated their face mask policy to reflect this change, effective immediately. The updated policy, currently reflected on Disneyland’s website, includes new verbiage regarding masks that contain valves. It states: “At this time, neck gaiters, open-chin triangle bandanas, and face coverings containing valves, mesh material, or holes of any kind are not acceptable face coverings. © Disney Disneyland also requires guests to remain stationary while they eat or drink, another policy that has been implemented at Disney World. More Umbrellas Around Downtown Disney! Currently, Downtown Disney is the only part of the Disneyland Resort that has reopened. At this time, a reopening date for the two theme parks and Disneyland’s hotels has yet to be announced. Click here to read more about Disney World’s updated face mask policy! Occasionally we find some SUPER cool new AR tech that catches our eye. Recently, we’ve found out how we might use the force in an AR environment and we’ve even seen Disney AR in practice with the Play Disney Parks app AR Mickey message! ©Disney Today, we spotted a way that Disney might use augmented reality to bring YOUR doodles to life! Disney filed a fun patent for “deformable-surface tracking based augmented reality image generation;” that’s a really fancy way of saying AR image creation based on an alterable subject! The patent mostly speaks to the use of AR with synced coloring pages. Take, for instance, this colored-in coloring page of an elephant. ©Disney With this new invention, a kid (or grown-up!) could color on the page and then use an application on their phone to scan the page. The image would then come to life in 3D on the page — WITH your personal color and drawing choices! WOAH! If you draw flowers on the 2D elephant’s trunk, the 3D elephant will have them too! ©Disney This is actually super similar to the AR Mickey some guests got earlier this year, except it’s customizable. Disney’s constantly surprising us with technology that seems too futuristic to be real — but here it is! As always, you can keep an eye on DFB to see ALL the coolest new Disney tech. When you go to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, getting a boarding pass for Rise of the Resistance can be a bit of a challenge. But when you DO get one, all that panic refreshing at 10AM or 2PM feels soooo worth it. Rise of the Resistance This massive Star Wars ride, however, is quite technologically advanced, which means that it breaks down and experiences little glitches from time to time. And today, while we visited Batuu to battle the First Order, we experienced a SUPER strange glitch. And we’re not talking about a glitch with boarding passes. The Ship’s Bridge in Rise of the Resistance In the transport ship that takes off from the rebel base, you typically see yourself flying through space and spot the Star Destroyer. However, there was a little mishap with the video in our transport ship. Still on the rebel base While Lieutenant Bek was screaming that the First Order was surrounding us, it looked like we were still firmly in safety on the ground in Batuu. A lil blurry, but you can see the glitch! Eventually, the video synced up and corrected itself, and we were captured by the First Order after all. But of course, the fun had just begun as we got to escape from their grasp! Rise of the Resistance has new boarding group times — click here to find out more! We love Disney fireworks shows — there’s just really nothing quite as magical. Fireworks in Disney World Whenever a NEW nighttime spectacular debuts, we’re always pumped to spot the new ways that Disney uses tech in these shows. We’ve been wondering about the addition of drones to Disney shows for a while now. We saw them used in Disney Springs a few years ago. And Universal used them recently as well. Some of the concept art for EPCOT Forever made us think we might see them, but it’s just really cool kites instead. But don’t fear, Disney IS still working hard on ways to incorporate drones in live shows! We spotted a new Disney patent today that discusses an “aerial show system using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) energy to animate creative show element.” That’s pretty much a fancy way of saying that Disney has come up with a way to use drones and the rushes of air they produce to animate elements of a live show. Take this figure from the patent for instance. Illustrated here is a potential use where the drone is used to suspend a “magical ship” (certainly looks like a flying pirate ship a la Peter Pan to us!). The drone flies the ship around and the air produced from the propellers shoots down to move the decorative rotors on the ship itself. It could also help to make sails billow in the wind! ©Disney Another potential use is something that we might be a little more familiar with. The patent explains that the air from the drones could be used to disperse water or particles in a way that makes a projection screen. Disney certainly does love throwing projections on water — just look at Fantasmic! This would allow those watery projection screens to be mobile. ©Disney A final use, and perhaps the largest scale of the ones in the patent, would be to animate a large scale set piece. This patent illustration seems to depict drones flying over a living mountain (looks a lot like Te Fiti from Moana!). The patent describes the use of the kinetic energy from the drones to move the arms of the set-piece and the air from the drones to make grass, hair, and other details appear to move organically. ©Disney WOW! This is certainly one of the cooler patents we’ve seen in a while. We’d love to see drones used more in Disney entertainment and such a high-tech approach seems like it could make for some seriously amazing effects. In the meantime, we’ll just have to look forward to the nighttime spectaculars of the future and HOPE they use some of this neat technology! There are a few signature dishes at Captain Cooks in Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort that are worth a trip on the monorail to enjoy. In the morning, it’s all about the Tonga Toast, but in the afternoon, the pulled pork nachos are what we’re after! Captain Cook’s On our visit to the Polynesian today, we swung by Captain Cooks and FREAKED when we noticed that we could order the pulled pork nachos once again! The pulled pork nachos sit on a beautiful bed of housemade chips and are topped with pineapple salsa, pico de gallo, and spicy mayo. Pulled Pork Nachos Currently, the pork nachos are NOT available on Mobile Order, so we had to order from the counter. When our food was brought to us, we were told that all orders are being packaged as to-go for the time being. Pulled Pork Nachos Considering the portion size, for just $8.99, you could easily count this one of your three meals for the day. Pulled Pork Nachos Honestly, it’s such a beautiful plate of food, we almost couldn’t bring ourselves to eat it (just kidding, we devoured it as soon as we sat down). Pulled Pork Nachos Kicking back and relaxing in Captain Cook’s while indulging on a delicious plate of pulled pork nachos is one of life’s little joys, ya know? Pulled Pork Nachos We’re definitely going to keep this in mind next time (and every time thereafter) we’re in the Magic Kingdom area! An intergalactic trip to Batuu, otherwise known as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, can be filled with twists and turns. Whether we’re navigating the updated (and then updated once more!) Boarding Group distribution system for Rise of the Resistance or we’re experiencing an eerily empty Oga’s Cantina, Galaxy’s Edge sure knows how to keep us on our toes! Stormtroopers One of the ways Disney provides the fully immersive experience in Galaxy’s Edge is through their merchandise. So you could imagine our surprise when we noticed merchandise in a new spot! Resistance Supply, the outpost located by Rise of the Resistance is currently closed. Resistance Supply – Temporarily Closed So…where does one find their essential Resistance gear!? How else are we supposed to prepare for our battle against the First Order? Resistance merchandise located in the marketplace in Galaxy’s Edge Merchandise typically found at the outpost can currently be found in the marketplace, at Black Spire Outfitters. Black Spire Outfitters The shop that typically houses Jedi robes is the new temporary home for all your Resistance needs! Resistance Supply merchandise being sold at Black Spire Outfitters As we browsed through the shelves, we recognized most of the merchandise you would find at the outpost, including pilot helmets, pins t-shirts, and more! Resistance Supply merchandise being sold at Black Spire Outfitters Even those in the Resistance need to stay properly hydrated! Be sure to pick up a reusable water bottle before you take off on your adventures. Resistance Supply merchandise being sold at Black Spire Outfitters So if the Resistance merchandise is located at Black Spire Outfitters, where can we pick up a Jedi robe? We were told that Dok-Ondar has acquired the stockpile of robes, and they can be purchased for now at his Den of Antiquities. Dok Ondar’s Den of Antiquities There never seems to be a dull moment on Batuu! Be sure to keep an eye out on the whereabouts of those intergalactic treasures next time you visit Galaxy’s Edge! Though the Disney water parks remain closed, that hasn’t stopped Disney from working behind the scenes to enhance the experience at a water park! Typhoon Lagoon Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon both have some awesome tube slides, and the lines can get pretty long. Well, Disney’s new water slide BRAKE technology could mean shorter lines in the long run! We love checking out new Disney tech and we recently spotted a patent for a “water slide tube with braking while hydroplaning.” That’s right, this tube can slow itself down, even when it’s skimming across the top of the water at a high speed! These tubes are designed with drag-increasing additions to help slow to a stop. ©Disney Disney notes in the patent that the reason lines get so long for some water slides is that a new guest cannot get on the slide until the guest at the bottom disembarks. This means that the longer it takes for a tube to stop at the bottom of a slide, the longer it takes for the line to move. With brakes, these tubes could help to significantly increase the throughput of tube water slides! ©Disney It’s always SO interesting seeing the tech that Disney comes up with! Who knew that water slides needed breaks? It’ll be interesting to see if we start seeing tubes replaced with these new models in the Disney water parks or elsewhere in Disney World. You know we’ll be sure to report in if we spot them! Click here to find out which Disney World water park we think is BETTER! What do you think of these new water slide brakes? We’re back at Disney’s Hollywood Studios to check out all the updated rides, merchandise, and dining! Disney Junior Play & Dance Party Hollywood Studios has gotten creative with the way they are handling character entertainment since reopening! To keep their distance, characters have been riding around the park in specially themed cars. Today, the Disney Junior Play & Dance Party show at Hollywood Studios reopened, but it looks a little different. The dance floor is marked with big blue dots that divide the area into “party zones.” Groups are asked to groove in their zone away from the other groups. Disney Junior Play & Dance Party The show has been modified a bit too. Usually, the show is longer and there’s a storyline about how the guests are waiting for Mickey to show up to the party. Prior to reopening, the Actors’ Equity Association rejected Disney World’s safety plan for performers. This included the actors from this dance party. Now, the mini-show lasts about 10-minutes and only features a DJ and the characters. Disney Junior Play & Dance Party Mickey, Timon, Vampirina, and Doc McStuffins all make an appearance during the show. The characters join the party one-by-one accompanied with uniquely themed background and music! Disney Junior Play & Dance Party The DJ pumps up the audience in-between the character appearances with classic Disney songs from Moana, A Goofy Movie, and Zootopia. Disney Junior Play & Dance Party All the characters came out together for a quick dance-off at the end of the show! Disney Junior Play & Dance Party Usually, elements like bubbles, snow, and leaves float down from the ceiling. Bubbles are the only floating element that we saw during the show today. Disney Junior Play & Dance Party Overall, the new socially distant dance floor didn’t throw off our groove. The characters were fun, the DJ played some good tunes, and we enjoyed the pumped-up atmosphere! It’s a great place to cool down with the a/c and turn up the heat with our funky fresh dance moves. One of our favorite new additions to the Disney World dining experience in the past few years has been Mobile Order. And during the phased reopening of the theme parks, this contactless way of ordering your food is becoming an essential part of a Disney World vacation. Disney is really pushing guests to order at quick-service dining locations through Mobile Order whenever possible. Mobile Order Sign Many locations like Pecos Bill was requiring guests to stand outside until their order Mobile Order was ready. Recently Pecos Bill debuted a new indoor waiting area for those that used Mobile Order. We ordered our food via My Disney Experience and approached the entrance to Pecos Bill. Pecos Bill If you show your confirmed Mobile Order to a Cast Member at the door, they will let you inside where you are asked to wait on a socially distanced floor dot. Pecos Bill Despite the indoor waiting area available for guests to use, we noticed that most diners were still opting to wait outdoors until their order was ready. Pecos Bill And then our food was ready after a short wait! You approach your designated window and off you go with a yummy lunch! Pecos Bill Mobile Order We were told by a Cast Member that these indoor waiting areas may not be in place all day long, especially during peak dining hours. So, if you want the option to wait inside, your best bet may be to go during those off-hours! Click here to see what Disney should consider doing if they want more people to use Mobile Order! The past few days have brought some ups and downs to Magic Kingdom’s Splash Mountain… and we’re not talking about that big drop at the end. This way to Splash Mountain ICYMI, the attraction was temporarily closed for the later part of the day on Sunday, and we found out it was still closed — and even drained — on Monday (that’s yesterday, at press time). But today? Well, today, Splash Mountain is back in action! Splash Mountain Today We stopped by during our trip around the park to see everything back up and running… or, at least, it was before the rain started coming down a bit later in the afternoon. But that’s not unusual when it comes to inclement weather, so no worries there! Splash Mountain Today Of course, we’re not certain how long this will be the case… last month, Disney announced that Splash Mountain will be closing and the attraction will be rethemed to a Princess and the Frog ride. It was not announced when the transformation will begin or how long it will ultimately take. So if you’re looking to make a splash in Magic Kingdom before the ride goes down for the major refurbishment, now’s a good time to do it! Some of our favorite iconic snacks went missing once Walt Disney World reopened to the public. We were reunited with a classic snack today! Sweet Cream Cheese Pretzel We have a long and tumultuous history with the Sweet Cream Cheese Pretzel from Disney World. We’re super serious when we say that Living with the Land is one of our favorite rides in EPCOT. Living with the Land Can you blame us? It’s GREAT. We love looking at Mickey-shaped fruits and vegetables. Well, today, we noticed a change to how Living with the Land is handling the new health and safety measures — they’ve added some plexiglass dividers. We were hanging out in The Land Pavilion recently when we noticed a boat cruise by with the new plexiglass dividers installed between rows. We rode Living with the Land when EPCOT first opened and none of the boats had these dividers, so they’re a pretty new feature. Boat with Plexiglass On the boats with these dividers installed, guests are being seated with one party in each row, but with no rows between parties. Boat with Plexiglass Interestingly enough, there are some boats that do not have the plexiglass dividers installed. Cast Members are seating guests with a row in between each party in these vehicles. Boat without Plexiglass We’re keeping tabs on all of the health measures around Disney World and reporting in on which make us feel the safest. Stay tuned to DFB for all of the latest updates! Walking down Main Street, U.S.A. is a time-honored tradition for Disney guests. Main Street, U.S.A. The experience is very similar to how it’s been since the Magic Kingdom opened almost 50 years ago! Some things have changed, like the look of Cinderella Castle, while others have not. Today though, we spotted a BIG change to how Cast Members dress on Main Street, U.S.A. — and it’s a pretty surprising shift! When we were strolling down Main Street, U.S.A. today, we spotted some Cast Members walking around in SHORTS! This may not seem too crazy, but diehard Disney-goers know that in the 50 years of Main Street’s existence, Cast Members on Main Street have worn long pants or skirts! Main Street Cast Members This change definitely has an effect on the more old-timey look of Main Street Cast Members, but we’re happy if it makes Cast Members more comfortable in the Florida heat! Main Street Cast Members What an interesting update! It might take us a little getting used to seeing those shorts, but we’re still lovin’ our interactions with the Main Street Cast Members. Keep an eye on DFB for more Magic Kingdom updates! Click here to learn about what we can expect for Disney World’s 50th Anniversary! What do you think of this new policy for Main Street Cast Members? Na’vi River Journey is one of the two attractions (the other being Avatar Flight of Passage) in Animal Kingdom’s Pandora. Na’vi River Journey If you’ve taken a boat journey through the beautiful bioluminescent rainforest that makes up the ride, then you’ve had the chance to encounter the Na’vi Shaman of Songs. The scene featuring the impressive audio-animatronic is truly stunning and provides an unforgettable moment in the attraction. And now…well, I guess you could say that a truly unforgettable souvenir has been created to go along with it. Check out this new and…interesting windbreaker we found at Windtraders, Pandora’s merchandise shop! Pandora Windbreaker We’re starting with the back of the jacket, which features the Shaman of Songs as the main focus of the design, with the artwork covering the entire back. Pandora Windbreaker The front of the windbreaker presents the floating mountains and glowing flora and fauna of Pandora as evening starts to fall over the land. Pandora Windbreaker It’s rare that bright purple-y pink sleeves make up the most subtle part of a clothing item, but here you have it! Pandora Windbreaker The color choice continues in the zipper and tie accents. The windbreaker is $49.99 at Windtraders. And we think it’s safe to say that it would help you remember your time on the Na’vi River Journey, don’t you think? Windtraders, of course, isn’t the only place we visited in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. We grabbed a yummy new bite at Yak & Yeti Local Food Cafes, said “So long” to Primeval Whirl, and found all sorts of goodies in the gift shops! You can check it all out here. For now, though, we say “Eywa ngahu” (that’s goodbye in Na’vi!) from Pandora — The World of AVATAR! Check out EVERYTHING new in Disney’s Animal Kingdom here! If you’re like me, a trip to EPCOT isn’t complete without a visit to The Seas with Nemo and Friends Pavilion to go under the sea and marvel at the natural beauty of vast marine life, including my favorite…SHARKS! Fans of these often-misunderstood champions of the sea can dive deep into the world of sharks at home during National Geographic’s 8th Annual SHARKFEST with more bite than ever by tuning into programming every night airing now on National Geographic and then on Nat Geo WILD starting August 9th. SHARKFEST underscores National Geographic Society’s 132-year legacy in exploring the farthest reaches of Earth and to highlight its commitment to shark and ocean conservation. Knowing that our Disney Parks sharks are also super excited about SHARKFEST, we thought it would be “fin”-tastic to get them involved in the celebration by letting them tell us more about themselves! For more on SHARKFEST including stories, downloads, activities for kids, and more visit NatGeo.com/Sharkfest, and for more #DisneyMagicMoments like this one, be sure to keep checking with us here at the Disney Parks Blog. Well, Tree of Life, you’re looking particularly snazzy today! Tree of Life You guessed it! We’re in Disney’s Animal Kingdom today to take a look at everything new in Disney World’s WILDEST park. After all, we love staying up to date on the AK happenings. Let’s take a look at ALL the updates in food, construction, and merchandise in Animal Kingdom! Animal Kingdom Food Updates As always, we’re starting with the food updates! In Windtraders we spotted this Pandora Expedition Trail Mix marked as new for $5.49. Interestingly enough, we’ve actually seen this mix before with the same ingredients — they’re just listed in a different order now. We’re not sure what’s up with that! Pandora Expedition Trail Mix Yak and Yeti Local Foods Cafe has had a bunch of changes to the menu, most notably the addition of the Korean Fried Chicken Sandwich and the Teriyaki Chicken Salad. Honestly, we were pretty big fans of the sandwich. After all, they loaded us up with sauce, and we LOVE sauce. Korean Fried Chicken Sandwich and Fries The menu has also lost several options including the Teriyaki Beef Bowl, American Kobe Beef Hot Dog, Asian Chicken Wrap, Ginger Chicken Salad, single Pork Egg Roll option, and the smaller Chicken Fried Rice side option. Click here to read our REVIEW of the new Korean Fried Chicken Sandwich! Animal Kingdom Construction Updates We recently heard that Primeval Whirl would be leaving us for good. Now, the first sign of this ride’s demise is here with the removal of the ride vehicles from the track. Primeval Whirl We’re so sad to see it go! Want to see more of the changes at Primeval Whirl? Click here! Nearby, we spotted a new Pin Trading Experience location in the spot where Goofy used to have meet and greets. Pin Trading Experience Animal Kingdom Merchandise Updates That’s all for construction and food, so let’s move on to the merch! Riverside Depot Perhaps our favorite merch find was this Lumiere and Cogsworth Spatula Set for $19.99. Lumiere and Cogsworth Spatula Set We’d be smiling too if we were helping to bake a delicious cake! Love this cute spatula set? See more here! Adding to the Jungle Cruise merchandise party we’ve been seeing around Disney World, we spotted this Jungle Cruise Pin Set for$24.99. Jungle Cruise Pin Set If you’re trying to get a little into pin trading (good on you, they’ll love it!), you can snag this new-to-us Winnie the Pooh Pin Starter Set for $32.99. It includes a lanyard and four Pooh pins! Winnie the Pooh Pin Starter Set And we spotted two cute new tees for $24.99! There’s this adorable Dug Shirt… Dug Shirt …and this COOL Scar Shirt! Scar Shirt We’re also loving these pretty, new-to-us Minnie Bow Socks for $14.99. Minnie Bow Socks Windtraders Over in Pandora, we spotted this WILD Pandora Windbreaker. Look, we guess this is a great option for anyone who LOVES the Na’vi River Shaman. If you want to make a statement, you CAN for $49.99.
