  1. If there’s one food item that we here at DFB have raved about for years and will CONTINUE to shout about for years to come, it’s Tonga Toast. Tonga Toast This beauty can be found at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort over at Capt. Cook’s as well as Kona Cafe. It easily tops our list as something you MUST try when you visit the Polynesian — and arguably something everyone should try in all of Disney World! In a nutshell, Tonga Toast is a thiiiiicccc slice of sourdough bread stuffed with bananas, and egg batter-dipped and deep-fried to a golden brown before being rolled in cinnamon sugar. It’s basically a massive piece of tropical deep fried french toast. It’s only found at the Polynesian Village Resort in Disney World and yes, it’s just as amazing as it sounds. Tonga Toast with Strawberry Compote at Kona Cafe Luckily you don’t have to be at the Polynesian to eat this incredible breakfast dish! Follow this simple recipe below and you’ll be instantly transported to one of our favorite Disney World Resort hotels! Thanks to our wonderful friend Heather Sievers over at @diningindisney, we have some visual aids to gaze at along the way. Tonga Toast at home! Seriously just looking at her photos makes us want to run out to the store this instant and gather all of these ingredients! Ingredients: Sugar-Cinnamon 3/4 cup granulated sugar 2 teaspoons cinnamon Batter 4 large eggs 1 1/3 cup whole milk 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1 tablespoon granulated sugar Tonga Toast 1 quart canola oil, for frying 1 loaf sourdough bread (uncut, 12 inches long) 2 large bananas, peeled Tonga Toast at home! Directions: For Sugar-Cinnamon: Mix sugar and cinnamon in a medium bowl (large enough to roll toast) with a fork until thoroughly blended. Set aside. For Batter: Whip eggs in a medium bowl (large enough to dip toast) until well beaten. Add milk, cinnamon, and sugar. Mix well and set aside. For Tonga Toast: Using caution, preheat oil to 350°F in a large pot or a deep fryer. (If using a large pot, use a candy thermometer to make certain the oil does not get any hotter or it will burn.) Slice the bread into four, three-inch-thick slices. Cut each banana in half crosswise, then each piece lengthwise. Place a bread slice flat on the counter and tear out just enough from the middle (do not tear all the way through) to stuff half a banana inside; repeat with each bread slice. Dip stuffed bread into batter, covering all sides, allowing excess batter to drip off bread, and place carefully into hot oil. Cook 4-5 minutes until golden brown. If needed, turn toast over after 2 minutes and cook for another 2 minutes on other side. Remove and drain excess oil. Roll toast in cinnamon-sugar. Repeat for each piece of toast. Tonga Toast at home! And presto! Serve this beauty up with a side of bacon and eggs and you got yourself a quintessential Polynesian breakfast. (If you want to be EXTRA with it, you can blend up a few strawberries with cream and a pinch of sugar to make a strawberry compote to pour over like you get at Kona Cafe!) And with all of us perfecting our culinary skills these days, we can all become Tonga Toast aficionados in no time! See MORE Disney Recipes HERE! Have you ever tried Tonga Toast? Have you made it for yourself at home before? Let us know in the comments! 2. Universal theme parks are dealing with "daunting" operational challenges during the coronavirus pandemic but so far, guest satisfaction is high while the crowds remain low, an executive said. Plummeting faster than a roller coaster, revenue at Universal theme parks fell 94% to $87 million during the second quarter when most of its parks were closed because of the coronavirus pandemic, the parent company of the attractions said Thursday. With Orlando’s and Japan’s theme parks reopening in June in the final weeks of the quarter, executives acknowledged it is a better option financially to operate with drastically reduced crowds than to be closed completely. These were some of the revelations Thursday as Comcast released an earnings report showing the hit of a global pandemic that is presenting historic challenges for the theme park industry. NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell said for theme parks, the pandemic’s “financial impact has been most significant and immediate and the operational challenge the most daunting” for the company. “The road back will be gradual and bumpy, but I’m confident this business will return to its historical levels of financial performance,” Shell said during a Thursday call with investors. Universal theme parks have drastically smaller crowds this summer because of the company’s new safety guidelines but feedback from guests on the experience is positive at record levels, Shell said, without providing specifics on attendance. Thursday’s earnings call did not provide updates on the some of the most closely watched projects for Orlando fans. Shell did not give a timetable when construction will resume on the third theme park in Orlando, saying the company is waiting for the future to become more certain. In April, the company announced it was pausing work at Universal’s Epic Universe, which will be built on 750 acres near Orange County Convention Center. The park’s original 2023 opening will be delayed by a year, said Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings based on a briefing he got from Universal. The earnings call also did not release an opening date for the unannounced roller coaster at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. The new thrill ride is under construction, causing regularly social posts from Universal fans, as it looks more complete. Despite the major impact on its operations, Comcast still beat Wall Street expectations for its revenues. Overall, Comcast’s second quarter revenue fell 12% to $23.7 billion and reported its earnings per share at $0.65, a 4% decrease from the same time period last year. “I am confident in our ability to continue to successfully navigate the impact of COVID-19, and emerge from the crisis even stronger,” Comcast CEO Brian Roberts in a statement. Universal Orlando opened June 5, more than a month ahead of its competitor, Walt Disney World. Meanwhile, Universal’s California attractions are still closed without a set reopening date, Shell said Thursday. Walt Disney Co., which had opened all four Orlando parks by July 15, is set to release its earnings Tuesday. SeaWorld Entertainment, the Orlando-headquartered company, will formally release its quarterly earnings Aug. 10, although it provided a “preliminary update” Wednesday that showed total revenue was expected to be $18 million versus $406 million from the second quarter of 2019. grusson@orlandosentinel.com View the full article
  3. Is there anything better than a wave from Mickey? We don’t think so! Mickey & Friends Motorcade If you agree with us, then you’re going to want to see the WACKY NEW Mickey Ears we spotted today in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. We’ve spotted a lot of new wars lately — like the Classic Sequined Minnie Ears or the Tower of Terror Minnie Ears — but none are so GLOVE-TASTIC as these! Let’s hear it for the NEW Mickey Glove Ears! Instead of the classic ear shape, this headband features two wave-ready Mickey gloves. Now, Mickey can double-wave at everyone you walk past in the parks! Mickey Glove Ears The backs are plain and simple, but Mickey gloves are so recognizable that you can still tell what they are. We’ve actually seen these babies in the international parks like Tokyo Disneyland before but boy, are we glad they finally made it here! Mickey Glove Ears We spotted these silly ears at Mickey’s of Hollywood in Disney’s Hollywood Studios for $24.99. Give them a round of applause — and go grab ’em! Looking for a more classic pair of ears? Click here! Will you be trying to snag a pair of the Mickey Glove Ears? Tell us in the comments! Related posts: What’s New in Disney’s Hollywood Studios! 4. If you know us, you know that we LOVE the MASSIVE No Way Jose Sundae at Beaches & Cream. No Way Jose Well, just a heads up — next time you’re at Beaches & Cream at Disney’s Beach Club Resort, you may notice something different about your No Way Jose. We’ve now seen several folks end up with smaller versions of the MASSIVE sundaes we know and love. Our friend @yellowbeadsandme on Instagram sent us a picture of the No Way Jose she got last night. That looks pretty different from the BIG one, huh? Not only was it served to her on a small silver dish instead of a goblet, but the serving size also looks smaller. We’re not sure yet whether or not this different dish means less ice cream, but we’re headed that way today to ask. © @yellowbeadsandme We’ve actually seen the No Way Jose in a third dish as well. When we visited Beaches & Cream for the grand reopening, we were asked if we wanted a large or small No Way Jose. When we said small, we were brought this little guy in a regular sundae glass instead of the big goblet. No Way Jose Small Now, we will note that we have recently gotten Beaches & Cream sundaes in the big goblet, so as far as we know it’s still an option. It just looks like there might be a few more choices now as to the size of your ice cream treat and you may need to specify in order to have your sundae served in the goblets that were used to seeing. Our Sundae in June Like we said, we’re headed over to Beaches & Cream today to get answers about what’s going on with the dishes, how much ice cream we will be getting with our No Way Joses and other Beaches & Cream sundaes, and what the sundaes cost now! So, stay tuned to DFB to keep an eye on this developing story! Have you gotten a smaller sized Beaches & Cream Sundae? Tell us in the comments! 5. Most Disney fans know that there are a LOT of secrets and easter eggs tucked around the Disney parks. Haunted Mansion We’ve taken a look at some super cool Disney easter eggs in the past, and there are definitely some that even the BIGGEST Disney fans don’t know. We’ve seen Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge easter eggs and hidden secrets in the ground, but do YOU know ALL of these sneaky Disney World RIDE secrets? Check them out! A Very Busy Grandma If you’ve made the rounds in Magic Kingdom, you might have thought you had deja vu when seeing a particular old lady animatronic. Don’t worry — you’re not crazy. This grandma is used on two different rides. © Disney You’ve probably spotted the grandma in a rocking chair in Carousel of Progress. But hop on Haunted Mansion and you’ll see her again! ©Disney When your Ghost Host is taking you through the iconic ballroom scene, take a look for a rocking chair. As the ghost fades in and out of existence, you might think she looks pretty familiar. That’s because the specter is created with the exact same animatronic. That’s one busy grandma! Click here to meet the creators of Disney’s Haunted Mansion! The Legacy of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Next up, we’re headed to Fantasyland for a relatively new attraction. Under the Sea — Journey of the Little Mermaid opened in New Fantasyland in late 2012. Years ago though, the same spot held the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage attraction. And these two rides share more than just the “Under the Sea” part of their names. Under the Sea – Journey of The Little Mermaid These two attractions also share some of the same water! When 20,000 Leagues closed in 1994, Imagineers bottled up some of the water from the attraction and saved it. At the opening of Under the Sea, they poured the water into the new attraction. What a cool nod to its predecessor! Journey of the Little Mermaid You can spot a few other testaments to the 20,000 Leagues ride elsewhere in the attraction as well. The most prominent perhaps is the distinctive Nautilus submarine shape carved into the rock in the queue line. Love mermaids? Click here to see how we celebrated National Mermaid Day! A Magical Snow White Reveal The wait time for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in Fantasyland is known to get pretty lengthy, so it’s a good thing that the queue (in non-pandemic times) has some fun interactive elements. One of these is a cool effect where guests spin some barrels full of gems and the seven dwarfs appear projected on the ceiling! Now that activity isn’t a secret on its own (you’ve probably played with the barrels as you passed if you’ve waited for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train)! The secret comes if you turn all of the barrels at the same time. Once all seven dwarfs are revealed, Snow White will appear and dance! This secret is so neat because it takes a bunch of different guests working together to make it happen. Love the “mountain” rides? Click here for a challenge to ride them all! The Proprietor of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad LOTS of big secrets in Magic Kingdom! Let’s take a trip over to Frontierland to a different mountain-based attraction. Get ready for a secret on the WILDEST RIDE IN THE WILDERNESS! The easter egg on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a part of the relatively new theming in the queue and the story of the ride. ©Disney Big Thunder got an upgrade with a more interactive queue back in 2013 and that lent itself to an enhanced story. Featured in that story is the proprietor of Big Thunder Mining, Barnabus T. Bullion. You’ll see his portrait, seen above, in the queue, and that face MIGHT look familiar to fans of Disney Imagineering! Barney is actually based on Tony Baxter — the famous Imagineer who helped to design Big Thunder Mountain Railroad! Want to ride Big Thunder from home? Click here! Two Skeletons Playing Chess Alright, our last stop in Magic Kingdom is to Adventureland to set sail on Pirates of the Caribbean! Of course, there’s plenty to see on this attraction. Those scenes are HUGE and taking a look around in any one of them is sure to show you some hidden secrets. This next secret though can actually be found in the queue for the ride. ©Disney One of our favorite secrets in the queue is the two skeletons playing chess. As you navigate the line, you can peer down into an abandoned prison cell holding two now-deceased players. Their chess pieces are actually set in a stalemate to signify that they are stuck in the game for all of eternity. Click here to check out some Cast Member secrets on rides! A Familiar Whistle But Magic Kingdom isn’t the only park with easter eggs on their rides. Next up, we’re headed to the newest attraction in Hollywood Studios with Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway! This new attraction has lots of Disney references inside. Runaway Railway Perhaps our favorite of the ridiculous amount of secrets isn’t one that you’ll see on the ride; it’s one you’ll hear! When you’re riding along on the train, make sure you listen for the whistle. This iconic sound is the exact same one used in the original “Steamboat Willie” short — the first-ever to feature Mickey Mouse! Click here to learn ALL the hidden secrets in Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway! R3X is Retired Over at Star Tours — The Adventures Continue, you’ll find some callbacks to the old version of the ride. Though C-3PO is now your reluctant pilot on your voyage through the galaxy, it wasn’t always that way. Your guide used to be more suited to the job! Dj Rex at Oga’s Cantina In the old version of Star Tours, a R3X droid (we call him Rex!) was your guide. This model of droid is now retired but you can actually still spot them in the queue for Star Tours in their out-of-commission retired state! Off ride, but still a fun fact: you can also spot the R3X droid in his new career as DJ R3X in Oga’s Cantina! Another fun thing lots of guests don’t know: R3X is voiced by Paul Reubens, otherwise know as Pee-Wee Herman to most children of the 80s! Love Oga’s? Click here to check out more of the latest restaurants! Some Elderly Puffins Popping over to EPCOT, we’re taking a look at another ride that pays tribute to its predecessor with a few easter eggs scattered in the attraction. You’ll want to make your way to Norway for a ride on Frozen Ever After for this next one. There are a few relics from the Maelstrom ride but don’t worry, you won’t need to keep an eye out for trolls. ©Disney First off, take a look at your ride vehicle! Since Frozen is set in Norway, Imagineers opted to use the same boats from the old ride as an homage to the history of the attraction and the Norwegian culture. The other relic? Look for the puffins towards the end of the ride! These little guys used to be featured alongside trolls and polar bears on the Maelstrom ride! You’ll see them to your right, just after the big drop. If you find yourself in the queue to meet Anna and Elsa at the Royal Sommerhus after, be sure to keep an eye on the tapestries on the wall…they feature a few memorable trolls you used to encounter on the attraction! Looking for a way to ride Frozen Ever After AND get a great view of the fireworks? Click here! Fireflies Exit First And last but certainly not least, we are headed to It’s Tough to Be a Bug in the Tree of Life over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. You didn’t think we were going to get through this whole list without stopping by Animal Kingdom, did you? It’s Tough to Be a Bug can be a scary attraction for some. Hey, don’t blame us! Have you SEEN that Hopper animatronic!?! Don’t even get us started on the…surprise in the end! It’s Tough to Be a Bug! If you can make it through the whole show without your eyes being shut, get ready to take a look at the exit signs. Before the audience is dismissed, you’ll hear that the creepy crawlies are allowed to go first. If you’re not screaming or laughing at this point (sorry, no spoilers!) be sure to look at the exit signs! You’ll see fireflies flying past as they exit. How cool is that!? Click here to check out some CUTE A Bug’s Life Loungefly bags! So there you have it! Did YOU know all of these sneaky ride secrets? If not, now you do! 7. We’re watching closely as Hurricane Isais inches closer to the Florida coast. Florida Palm Trees The National Hurricane Center has claimed that Hurricane Isaias has formed over the Caribbean Sea and could possibly head towards the Florida coast. The storm is sustaining 60 mph hour as of 8:00AM and is roughly 100 miles west-southwest of Ponce, Puerto Rico. According to the NHC, the forecast cone shifted east last night and is showing that the hurricane may pass the east side of Florida and toward the Carolinas this weekend. ©WESH Heavy rains from Isaisas have pelted the eastern Caribbean, passing south of Puerto Rico and headed for Hispaniola. The storm is expected to cross the Dominican Republican and Haiti on Thursday. ©WESH It’s unclear whether the hurricane will reach central Florida and affect the Disney World area. The NHC also suggests it could possibly shift course again or weaken significantly and break up. We’ll keep watching for updates to inform you of the storm’s progress. 11. With Tropical Cyclone Nine approaching, the state of Florida is preparing to close its COVID-19 testing sites. Palm Trees According to WESH, there is a 90% chance that the approaching tropical cyclone could reach tropical storm status — if it does, it will be named Tropical Storm Isaias. With the storm taking shape in the Caribbean, Florida is planning to close its testing sites in preparation. According to Spectrum News 13, the sites will close at 5PM on Thursday. Florida’s Division of Emergency Management said in a news release that its testing sites can’t hold up to the threat of a potential tropical cyclone because they include tents and other free-standing structures. ©WESH State officials said the decision was made out of an abundance of caution. According to the release, testing sites will begin reopening as the severe weather threat passes, and all sites are expected to reopen by 8AM Wednesday at the latest. Orange and Hillsborough counties followed suit, saying that all testing sites run by their health departments will also be closed into next week. 18. States across the country are implementing various travel advisories that typically include an advised or mandated self-quarantine upon entering the state if the traveler is coming from a region with high positivity rates. Orlando International Airport Already, we have seen states such as New York add fines associated with breaking those mandated quarantines. Other states, such as Ohio, are currently advising a fourteen-day self-quarantine. Previously, we reported that Ohio Governor Mike DeWine was requesting that all travelers from states with high positivity rates self-quarantine for 14 days upon entering Ohio. This would apply to both out-of-state visitors entering Florida as well as Ohio residents returning to the state. Check health and safety information prior to your visit Today, however, as reported by NBC 4 News, the Governor has taken matters one step further and is advising Ohio residents to NOT travel into states like Florida and any other areas that are reporting high positivity rates. If they do, they are still being advised to self-quarantine for fourteen days upon returning to Ohio. Orlando International Airport There are currently seven states with a positivity rate above 15% that the Governor is advising AGAINST traveling to: Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Idaho, Kansas, and Arizona. Florida Sunset For the most up-to-date information associated with Ohio’s travel advisories, check out the state’s Department of Health website. We will continue to monitor various states’ travel advisories and will provide updates as we learn more! 19. Have you ever wondered what the world around you would look like if you were suddenly really small? Like something the size of, say … a rat? That’s the premise for Ratatouille: The Adventure, the popular attraction inside Walt Disney Studios Park at Disneyland Paris. Based on Disney and Pixar’s “Ratatouille,” this immersive experience “shrinks” you down to the size of “little chef” Remy and sends you scurrying through the kitchen of Gusteau’s restaurant. In this new “Ride & Learn” video, you can virtually experience this 4D attraction and discover all sorts of fun facts – like the actual size of the giant fish you whiz by, or the names adorning some of the oversized bottles in Gusteau’s kitchen. So enjoy this delicious treat we’ve cooked up for you today, and keep checking back with the Disney Parks Blog for more #DisneyMagicMoments! View the full article
  20. Another hotel has reopened in Disney World! The Swan This morning, we took a tour around a reopened Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort to see all of the changes. Now, we’re headed to the EPCOT resort area for a look at the health and safety measures in the Swan Hotel! Let’s dive in! The first thing we noticed is that the Swan’s partner, the Dolphin Hotel is currently barricaded with several fences and signage noting that no one is allowed to that hotel. This is, of course, due to the fact that the Major League Soccer MLS is Back Tournament players are staying there! The Dolphin Once inside the Swan, health measures were apparent all around the check-in area. The desks have plexiglass shields to protect employees, there are distancing stickers on the ground, and signs that request that only one guest approaches the desk at a time. Check-In Speaking of signage, there was PLENTY. We spotted this one several times that encourages guests to keep their hands clean and keep an eye out for symptoms. Health and Safety Signage The Swan also has these signs with more health and safety reminders. We saw them posted regularly throughout the common areas. Health and Safety Signage Plus, like other Disney resorts, the lobby has some signs on the tables asking guests to remember to social distance when in the lobby area. Health and Safety Signage Most of the dining at The Swan is OPEN! The only spot that was closed was Chill Frozen Drinks, so we’ll be keeping an eye out for its reopening. Chill Sign At Garden Grove, we noticed that there were plexiglass barriers installed at the check-in counter. Garden Grove Kimonos had hand sanitizer stationed at the entrance. There was also signage posted around the resort that encourages guests to download the Swan and Dolphin app to receive resort information, dining information, and menus. Finding the app is made easier with the QR codes on the signs. Kimonos Il Mulino New York Trattoria (a hidden gem!) is open as well. Similarly, this spot had hand sanitizer and a QR code for the app. Il Mulino At the Java Bar, we spotted physical distancing stickers throughout the queue. Coffee Shop So, there you have it! The Swan is back open with many of its old offerings available. We’ll be sure to keep an eye out for changes, so stay tuned for updates! 22. As the Disney World Resort hotels and theme parks continue their phased reopening, Disney’s many transportation systems have reopened generally in-step with the locations they serve. Friendship Boat We originally anticipated the Friendship Boats to reopen today, July 29. But when we checked the boat launches, however, we noticed that they are NOT operating! We saw signage posted at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn that the Friendship Boats are currently not operating. Disney’s BoardWalk Inn The BoardWalk Inn was originally scheduled to reopen on October 1, but that has been delayed indefinitely. We also saw signs posted at Disney’s Swan and Dolphin hotels noting that the boats were not running. Both the Swan and Dolphin hotels reopened today to the general public. Disney Swan and Dolphin Hotels We did not see any boats running today while we visited EPCOT, either! So where could those Friendship Boats be? Before today, Disney World’s website previously indicated that the Friendship Boats would resume the week of July 29. Prior information regarding BoardWalk Villas and the Friendship Boats When we check Disney World’s website now, however, that information is omitted and there is no mention of when the Friendship Boats will resume operation. BoardWalk Villa Information as of July 29 – the Friendship Boats are MISSING! So, it looks like we’ll just have to wait and see when the Friendship Boats will come back! With no official word from Disney at this time, we will keep checking on the boat launches to see if we notice any activity in the coming weeks!
