That’s right… the very same one we spotted in EPCOT recently is now available for online purchase through shopDisney! Check out all the Figment-y details here! As in EPCOT, the Figment Shoulder Plush is $19.99, and you can purchase him by clicking here to visit shopDisney. Click here to buy the Figment Shoulder Plush on shopDisney! Figment joins all sorts of new shoulder pals lately, like Remy, Bruni, and Pascal. (Pascal, by the way, is also available on shopDisney.) Which, of course, begs the question… which Disney character would YOU most like to carry along with you next? Which Disney character would you like to see as the next shoulder plush? Please let us know with a comment! Related posts: It’s Not a Figment of Your Imagination! We Spotted a NEW Figment Shoulder Plush in EPCOT! NEW Epcot Experience Merchandise Arrives in Disney World! 2. A LOT is different in Disney World and it can be hard to keep track of all of the changes. Monorail Now, MOST of the changes make sense. We totally get the mask mandate, temperature checks, and social distancing. But we’ll be honest, there are some things (or lack thereof) that are just downright confusing for us! Let’s take a look at some of the bigger head-scratchers we’ve experienced in a reopened Disney World! There are temperature checks EVERYWHERE — but not when you check in to the resorts? Perhaps our biggest surprise when we first got back to the resorts on their opening day was that there were NO temperature checks when you get to a resort hotel. This definitely strikes us as a little strange considering there are temperature checks EVERYWHERE else — in Disney Springs and in the parks, and even at the table-service restaurants IN the resorts. But there are no temperature checks when you first get to the resorts. Temperature Screening at Disney Springs Does this mean that theoretically, a guest could fail the temperature check at Magic Kingdom and head back to the resort to hang out in common areas? Yep, it kinda does! Still, Disney did add an extra precaution with the introduction of those mandatory temperature checks at resort table service restaurants. Still, not having the checks required to enter a hotel at all when they do everywhere else does have us a little bit confused. Click here to learn more about temperature checks in Disney World! Things seem laser-focused on health and safety, but some high touch points seem neglected. Temperature checks aren’t the only measure that seems to have gray areas. For instance, Disney seems laser-focused on safety and sanitation, but there are some high touch points that seem to be treated just like they’ve always been pre-closure. If you’re nervous about germy surfaces, bring your own hand sanitizer and wipes! Queue We’ve noticed that there is no cleaning between each guest on interactive rides like Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin or Toy Story Midway Mania, and the Skyliner is only being cleaned ONCE A DAY. Plus, water fountains are still in use, which seems especially eye-raising to us since guests aren’t even allowed to use the self-serve soda stations in most dining locations. Want to know more about how Disney World is cleaning their rides and attractions? Click here. We love the Character Cavalcades, but sometimes they’re head-scratchers. This one is kind of silly but has definitely left us confused. We absolutely ADORE the new Character Cavalcades, in fact, we love them way more than we thought we would! But there are some character cavalcades that don’t make a ton of sense. We just want to know the thought process behind some of these choices! Daisy and Donald For one, the Frozen Promenade in EPCOT features Anna and Elsa taking a spin around the World Showcase. Here’s the thing though, Anna is riding along in a glorious horse-drawn carriage while Elsa…walks? HOLDING her train bunched up in her arm…? Were there no extra white horses to stick her on? Elsa on horseback would be CRAZY cool. We’re not sure this is what she had in mind when she did the whole “Into the Unknown” thing. Elsa in EPCOT Then there’s the Fantasyland Friends Cavalcade. On the surface level, it sounds great. All our Fantasyland pals together at once? Awesome! But in practice it really is just random Disney characters all tossed together on a float. Mary Poppins, Alice, Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh, and Aladdin? Not the combo we necessarily would have picked. Magic Kingdom Character Cavalcade And not even all Fantasyland characters! We’re pretty sure Aladdin sets up shop in Adventureland last we checked. Should there be an asterisk next to the name with tiny print at the bottom saying “Fantasyland Friends Cavalcade…oh yeah, and Aladdin. He didn’t have a lot going on today.” To see more of the Character Cavalcades, click here! Why won’t Disney show characters wearing face masks? Speaking of characters, several guests think it’s strange that Disney won’t show their characters wearing face masks. We asked our readers about their thoughts on this, and the results were nearly 50-50 for and against. Some guests think it makes absolutely no sense for face characters to wear masks. It could possibly ruin the story of that character to see them masked up. But for other guests, there is definitely a case to be made for some characters (princesses, for instance) wearing face masks in a way that won’t disrupt their story. Rainy Day Princesses The biggest benefit of doing this would be that it could give parents a way of showing little kids that face masks are a-ok. Right now, this is giving kids an excuse to say, “But MERIDA isn’t wearing one!” Click here for ways to keep your littles wearing a mask all day long! How can some park areas feel so well thought out, safety-wise, and others feel like a free-for-all? Another thing that’s really got us at a loss is the way that some park areas feel perfectly planned out while others? Not so much. Think about lines for attractions and some quick-service venues with carefully-placed social distancing and directional stickers. Now, think about seeing NONE of that in super-popular (and super bottleneck-y) areas like Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Doesn’t make a ton of sense, does it? Galaxy’s Edge Crowds Frankly, Galaxy’s Edge has felt like a bit of a hot mess in general. When that area gets crowded, you won’t typically find us hanging out near the Millennium Falcon for a selfie! We definitely think the space could use more directional markers, better ways to promote spacing, or maybe even some sort of limited capacity. Want to see more of the issues in Hollywood Studios? Click here. Disney has been very hot and cold about resort hopping. Listen, we’re REALLY confused about the deal with resort hopping. Disney’s official line is that to even get INTO a Disney World hotel right now, guests will need a confirmed room reservation, or a confirmed dining reservation if you’re a day guest not staying overnight. But in practice, we’ve found that resort hopping is a little less clear. Chef Mickey’s So far, we’ve had no issue heading into the monorail loop resorts — Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort — as long as we have that dining reservation OR we order something through Mobile Order from a quick-service spot on site. Basically, food has been our golden ticket in. Disney’s Wilderness Lodge But we have been turned away from other resorts for arriving too early for a reservation. At Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, we were asked to sit in our car until it was time to go in and eat, and we were scolded at the Beach Club for arriving early as well. Next time we went back to the same hotel, we were allowed to enter with no issue! It really seems very dependent on the Cast Member you encounter when trying to enter. We’re glad you can still (sort of!) resort hop, but we do wish this policy was a little bit clearer. Click here to learn more about resort hopping in a reopened Disney World! There are gaps in the monorail dividers. This is a little thing but it has us confused. We’ve definitely had our moments of discomfort on the monorail since it reopened. After all, it’s an enclosed space and, at busier times, we’ve been in a cabin with up to three other groups. But what really gets us are the barriers between the open cars with GAPS around the edges. Why the gaps? Monorail Peach Currently, monorail cabins are split into two separate spaces by a barrier in the middle of the car, but that barrier does not seal against the walls or seats. The result of this is pretty significant gaps where air can get through, including RIGHT near your head when you’re seated on the bench. If the gaps are there to make sure the cabin has airflow, doesn’t that defeat the whole point? Click here to learn more about riding the monorail in a reopened Disney World! What’s keeping menus so limited? And finally, what’s keeping some of our favorite items off of the menu? We’ve been pretty devastated whenever we see a favorite is unavailable at a dining spot (We’re looking at you California Grill Sonoma Goat Cheese Ravioli!). Aloha Isle We’ve heard from chefs and Cast Members that some missing items will be returning soon, but why aren’t they back yet? We know a lot of this has to do with supply chain issues, available Cast Members, the ability to safely space Cast Members in prep areas, and costs vs. guest demand, but we DO wish that we knew with a bit more certainty when these missing items will return — or if some are gone for good. Click here to see our experience at a reopened California Grill! So Disney has got us a little bit confused about some aspects of the reopened parks and resorts, but we’re still working to understand! If you’ve got any questions about the new experience at Disney World, ask them in the comments and we’ll do our best to get you an answer! 3. Eagerly been waiting to schedule your next trip to Disneyland Resort in California? Disneyland Resort While the Disney theme parks in California remain closed at the moment, the Downtown Disney District has reopened. Now, we’ve got some updates about when you can make a hotel reservation if you’re looking to stay at one of the Disneyland Resort Hotels. Previously, we shared with you that Disneyland was asking its guests with reservations through September 5th to modify or cancel those reservations. Disneyland Hotel Now, we’ve received confirmation that guests can only book new hotel reservations for dates after September 15th. We confirmed this after chatting online with a Disney Cast Member. Screenshot from Chat on Disney Website When we went to look at hotel availability for a proposed stay just for the night of September 15th, we were asked to check the availability of the hotels. Screenshot from Disneyland Resort Hotels Website When we checked each resort’s availability, we were met with messages telling us that the “room type is unavailable for the dates, party size or offer selected”. Screenshot from Disneyland Resort Hotels Website When we searched for a hotel reservation with a September 16th check in date, however, we were able to see there was availability at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel. The Disneyland Hotel, however, still showed the “Check Availability” message. Previously, when Disneyland announced its reopening plans, the Disneyland Hotel was not listed as one of the hotels set to reopen in the initial phase. Instead, according to Disney, the Disneyland Hotel was going to open at a later date. Screenshot from Disneyland Resort Hotels Website When we checked the availability for a proposed September 15th reservation date, the rooms at the Disneyland Hotel did in fact appear to be unavailable. Screenshot from Disneyland Resort Hotels Website We checked for some dates later in September, but still couldn’t find any availability at the Disneyland Hotel. Screenshot from Disneyland Resort Hotels Website It appears, however, that starting October 1, 2020, there is availability at the Disneyland Hotel for reservations. Screenshot from Disneyland Resort Hotels Website As of this time, Disneyland Resort has yet to announce a reopening date. While these hotel reservations appear to be available now, availability may change and guests who book now may ultimately have to cancel or modify due to potential extended closures. We’ll definitely keep an eye out on any new developments regarding hotel reservations and any potential theme park openings in Disneyland! Click here to see what’s new at Downtown Disney! 12. Can you guess the location of this Carolwood Pacific Railroad car? Our latest Disney Vacation Club edition of the “Where Can You See This?” photo challenge takes us to a rustic, restful retreat steeped in Disney history. Here, in one of the coziest spaces you’ll find anywhere at Walt Disney World Resort, Disney Vacation Club Members and guests may peruse artifacts celebrating Walt Disney’s love of railroads, including two actual cars from the one-eighth scale steam railroad that famously traveled the “Fair Weather Route” through the backyard of Walt’s 5-acre home on Los Angeles’ Carolwood Drive. The car pictured above is No. 749. More on that in a moment. In the meantime, here’s a wider shot of the train cars’ display case. Still don’t know? Here’s another hint. While this room is part of a space that functions a bit like a lobby, the resort’s front desk is located in a much larger lobby next door, connected by a covered walkway through the woods. Both lobbies, by the way, feature fireplaces. Final hint: this resort features both traditional hotel rooms and not one but TWO distinct Disney Vacation Club Resorts. Answer: You’ll find these authentic artifacts in the Carolwood Pacific Room within the “lobby” of Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge opened in 2000 as The Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and changed its name to Boulder Ridge Villas in 2017 as a second Disney Vacation Club Resort – Copper Creek Villas & Cabins – debuted at the lakeside lodge. Both Disney Vacation Club Resorts build on the lodge’s thematic connections to America’s transcontinental railroad. Oh, and as for that train car No. 749? Take a closer look at the full-size “Boulder Ridge Railway and Mining Co.” cars in the lodge’s landscape. You’ll see that Imagineers have cleverly matched the numbers emblazoned on those mine cars to those on the miniature train cars in the Carolwood Pacific Room. View the full article

  14. The history of the Walt Disney Company is full of technical and creative feats and a true love for storytelling. From left to right: Donn Tatum, Card Walker, Harrison “Buzz” Price, John Kelsey, Thornton Ladd with Walt Disney © CalArts Of course, with such a major enterprise as Walt Disney Studios and the Disney theme parks, Walt Disney had his secrets. There are MANY things about Disney’s past that we’ll never know — but there are some secrets that Disney hasn’t been able to keep. Here are four secrets Disney tried to keep but couldn’t! 1. Walt Disney’s Smoking Habit It’s a pretty widely-known fact that Walt Disney had a habit of smoking cigarettes. Walt became a heavy smoker after World War I and can be seen in many pictures with a cigarette in hand. And, as many know, Disney passed away from lung cancer. Interestingly, The Walt Disney Company seems to be trying to keep this habit under wraps — to little avail. ©Disney The modern Disney company has implemented a Studio-wide smoking ban in Disney films, according to the New York Times. And this stance sometimes has the effect of erasing an uncomfortable and significant piece of Walt’s history. For instance, per the Independent, Walt was not allowed to be seen smoking in Saving Mr. Banks. (Though he did stub out a cigarette in his office in one scene.) ©Disney Some reports indicate that Disneyland digitally removed cigarettes from pictures of Walt in the park. We’ve investigated and will say that it’s pretty difficult, if not impossible, to find a photo of Walt with a cigarette in the Walt Disney Presents attraction in Hollywood Studios. One Man’s Dream Disney has received criticism for this, noting that it helps to erase the unpleasant fact that cigarettes may have contributed to Walt’s early passing. Whatever the case, Walt’s smoking habit is kept on the down-low in official Disney content — but that doesn’t hide Walt’s very real history with smoking. Click here to learn five mistakes you DON’T want to make in the Disney parks. 2. Use of Shell Companies to Buy Land for Disney World Possibly the biggest cracked secret of the Disney company was actually one that Walt engineered himself. The undertaking of speculating an entirely new resort was a huge one, and Disney World was set to be a property like no other. One thing that Disney needed to make this dream a reality? Land. And Walt didn’t want others to know that he was acquiring it. Magic Kingdom If huge land purchases in Orlando were made in Disney’s name, nearby property values would skyrocket. In turn, Disney would have to pay more for the land he needed, and other companies might buy up the needed land to take advantage of the Disney-adjacent real estate. After seeing this happen around Disneyland, Walt was looking for a solution. As a way to mitigate these possibilities, Walt used shell companies to purchase the land such as Latin-American Development and Management Corp., Tomahawk Properties, and the very Disney-esque M.T. Lott Co. according to the L.A. Times. The false companies weren’t the only measure taken either. Disney’s attorney Bob Foster used a false name when scouting land and even flew through St. Louis instead of straight from California so as to keep Disney out of the guesswork around who the mystery buyer was. ©Disney Cinderella Castle on Opening Day Of course, this all changed when Journalist Emily Bavar uncovered the story. According to the Orlando Sentinel, at a press event celebrating Disneyland’s 10th Anniversary, Bavar asked Disney upfront if he was the one who was buying the land. In her words, “He looked like I had thrown a bucket of water in his face. I have never seen anyone look so stunned. He was too surprised, but then he recovered and said ‘no.'” Cinderella Castle from 1980! While in California, though, Bavar was able to speak to enough sources that she was convinced it was true. Bavar predicted on Oct. 21st, 1965 that Disney was buying the land to build a new theme park in Florida, and she was right. This is perhaps the most on-the-nose example of a secret Disney tried to keep but couldn’t! Want to see some STRANGE facts about Disney World’s opening day attractions? Click here! 3. Walt Disney Acted as an FBI Informant Did you know that Walt Disney served as an FBI informant for over 25 years? Yeah, it’s pretty crazy! Technically, this was kept a very tight secret for a very long time. It wasn’t until the Freedom of Information Act in 1993 that documents confirming Disney’s involvement with the Federal Bureau of Investigation came to light, per The New York Times. ©Disney Disney passed on names to the federal government of those who may be considered subversive in Hollywood, although the released document has a significant amount of information redacted for national security purposes; and just who Walt Disney informed about remains a bit of a mystery. Disney provided so much information to the bureau that he was made a “full Special Agent in Charge Contact” or a very trusted informer. Walt Disney and His Family at the Rose Parade ©Disney The relationship between Disney and J. Edgar Hoover, the director of the Bureau, was an intricate one. For Disney’s work, Hoover let Disney film in the FBI Headquarters and Disney even changed some character portrayals of FBI agents to appease the bureau. It’s surprising to learn of such political and national motivations just under the surface but as the New York Times puts it, “The Disney dossier is a historic reminder of the cold war years when Hollywood’s writers, actors, directors and producers, and their organizations clashed about political beliefs.” Walt Disney and Lillian on their travels Ultimately, this secret was kept for over fifty years until the Disney documents were released. But with the Freedom of Information Act, Disney’s tenure as an informant couldn’t be kept a secret forever. To learn how to go behind the scenes in Disney World, click here! 4. Disney Couldn’t Keep Oswald from Universal This last one is less of a secret that Disney couldn’t keep and more of a CHARACTER that Disney couldn’t keep. We’ll explain. When Walt Disney and partner Ub Iwerks first decided to develop a major animated star, you might think his mind leaped to Mickey Mouse. But Mickey actually had a predecessor — Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit According to the BBC, Oswald could have been Disney’s biggest character had it not been for a bit of trouble with the rights of the rabbit. Walt Disney Studios was initially commissioned by Universal Pictures in 1927 to produce a series of animated shorts starring the brand-new Oswald character. Oswald quickly became popular due to the fact that he was possibly the earliest animated character to have a full-fledged personality. ©Disney As you’ve probably guessed though, everything did not go as Walt Disney had imagined. The contract between Walt and Universal ultimately meant that the rights to Oswald the Rabbit belonged in the hands of Universal Pictures. Due to the success of Oswald, backdoor deals were made between Universal producers and Walt’s own animators to produce Oswald shorts without involvement from Walt. ©Disney Sure enough, Universal got the rights (and many of Walt’s team) away from Disney for some time. It was one of Walt’s larger defeats at this time in his career and he left the negotiations with Universal in low spirits, per the BBC article. It wasn’t all bad though. The story goes that Walt came up with the idea for a certain Mouse on the way home. Oswald greets his fans! Forty years after Walt’s death, the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit were returned to the Disney company in a trade with Universal in 2006 to send sports commentator Al Michaels to NBC, and the company continues to use Oswald in content, on merchandise, and in the parks to this day. Want to see some recent Oswald merch? Click here! Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, a secret just won’t stay under wraps. It certainly is interesting taking a look back at Walt Disney’s life and the past of the Disney Company. If you liked hearing about Disney’s history, let us know! 17. We love a good sale! Americana Collection We found a lot of great sales today in Disney World, but one was just super random! Some people collect ears. Others collect Loungefly bags. Us, we’re partial to the world of notepads inexplicably shaped like t-shirts. Okay, maybe we don’t have a t-shirt notepad collection, but now that you’ve heard of them, they sound cute, right? Well, earlier today we stopped by The Darkroom, a merchandise store located toward the front of Hollywood Studios. We noticed that t-shirt notepads were actually on sale there for $8.00 each when you buy two. It’s random enough that the sale was only for t-shirt notepads (not stationary or notepads in general), but here’s the other weird thing… T-Shirt Notepads Sale …the only t-shirt notepad we saw there was a Tangled one! Were there lots of other t-shirt notepads before that sold out because of this sale? Is Disney just trying to get everyone to feel like they’re having the best day ever? Did we really need this Tangled notepad, with that adorable little Pascal on it, to be shaped like a t-shirt? The world may never know, but it was such a random single-item sale we couldn’t help but share it with you! Tangled Notepad In all seriousness, this notepad is actually really cute and even has a magnet on the back of it, making it super convenient. The notepad is normally priced at $9.99. If you’re a Tangled fan, maybe you can take advantage of this sale and take home all of those notepads for yourself! Back of Tangled Notepad We will definitely be on the lookout for more random deals and let you know what we find! Click here to check out a new Maleficent headband we spotted online! 19. Staying at a Disney World hotel is not without its challenges for folks who take their coffee consumption VERY seriously! French Press Coffee at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort While Disney World’s theme parks have a better selection of specialty drinks to get you caffeinated thanks to Joffrey’s and Starbucks, the same can’t be said for all of the Disney hotels! They pretty much serve just the most basic stuff at their grab ‘n’ go dining locations! If you’re a self-proclaimed coffee snob with an intricate set-up back home (a.k.a. resembling a mad scientist’s laboratory), you like your coffee anything BUT basic! Heck, we’ve been known to pack a suitcase with our favorite burr grinders, French presses, and pour-overs to make a high-quality cup of coffee for ourselves back in our rooms and forgo the in-room coffeemaker (leave the Chemex at home — it’s TOO fragile, people!). Grand Floridian Coffee Maker According to ESPN.com, Miami Heat’s Jimmy Butler had this clever idea too! He’s brought along all of his own barista supplies, but instead of just brewing up delicious cups of joe for himself, he’s slangin’ beans to the other NBA players with a Disney bubble coffee shop he’s running out of his hotel room! It doesn’t appear he’s roasting his own beans (yet...) but a cup of his coffee doesn’t come cheap! Check out the menu he has posted on his door! Working from his French Press, Butler has quite the selection of beverages to choose from including Lattes, Americanos, Mochas, Pour Over, Espresso, Macchiatos, Cappuccinos, Red Eyes, and Cafe Au Lait! No matter which item or size the other NBA players order, he’s charging $20 — cash ONLY! We wonder if that price includes tip, too! With those prices, Butler might be putting Starbucks out of business soon! “You can’t get coffee nowhere here,” Butler said to ESPN. “So I might bump it up to 30 bucks a cup. People here can afford it.” $30 to drink a cup of coffee made by a five-time NBA All-Star? We’d definitely support Butler’s side hustle! Check out the Disney bubble’s NBA barbershop at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort here! What do you think of Butler selling coffee from his room? Share your thoughts in the comments below! Classic Mickey Ears We also love that Mickey’s autograph is embroidered in red on one side of these ears. Even though you can only waive at Mickey from afar for now, at least you can always carry his autograph with you thanks to these ears! Classic Mickey Ears No need to go to World of Disney in Disney Springs anymore to grab them. These ears are now available on shopDisney for $29.99. Click here to add the Mickey Mouse Simulated Leather Ear Headband to your collection! But, by FAR, the most whimsical set of new ears available online is definitely the Mickey Mouse Gloves Ear Headband. In this design, Mickey Mouse’s gloves form the two ears, instead of a typical, rounded ear shape. They’re a bit wacky but also weirdly cute! Mickey Glove Ears The backs of the gloves are plain, but definitely still recognizable as Mickey’s gloved hands. We found these ears a little while ago in Hollywood Studios and are excited to now see them available online! Mickey Glove Ears You could give your friends and family members a high five with your head while wearing these ears and we kinda love it! Snag one of these for $24.99 from shopDisney.
