Continuing our look at Disneyland park during its construction, today I’m sharing two very rare photos of Main Street Station, the popular starting point of your “grand circle tour” aboard the vintage trains of the Disneyland Railroad. This image was taken as the framing of the building was far enough along to recognize the train station we know today. Just over one month later, the progress is stunning. I can practically hear the bell ringing and the whistle blowing as the train approaches. You’ll notice that the clock tower doesn’t have a clock yet. In our next “construction update” you’ll see why that’s a very good thing. We’ve got a holiday surprise for you today… . I’ll give you a hint — it involves Frozen, dessert, and more Christmas lights than you can possibly imagine! Well, maybe it’s not really a surprise — after all, you already saw the title at the top — but still! Osborne Family Lights On a recent trip to Walt Disney World to check out some of the early holiday decorations and events, I bought a ticket for the Frozen Holiday Premium Package. This package includes reserved viewing in the Premiere Theater for the “For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration”, plus a unique Holiday Lithograph and Frozen Pin. There’s also a Frozen Dessert Party — which includes an all you care to enjoy spread of sweets and beverages. And the party was taking place right underneath the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights in a reserved area!! Can I be honest? I really didn’t care about the Frozen stuff. I don’t have a “Frozen-aged” kid at the moment, and while I saw the movie, I didn’t need to see it a bajillion times. So the big reason why I booked this party — besides wanting to show YOU guys what it was all about, of course — was to get a VIP vantage point for the Osborne lights. Seriously, most of the time when I go to the Lights, I’m shoulder to shoulder with everyone else there. It’s PACKED many nights, so I was thinking it might be worth the money for the dessert party if I’d be able to enjoy the lights without re-living my “on-the-subway-going-to-work-during-rush-hour-in-NYC” days. Unfortunately, the evening that I attended the event, the weather was…well…crap. One of those Orlando days when it just pours…and pours…and pours…with no break at all. Cupcakes AND Lights?!? BUT — the show must go on. And so, with the dessert-eating portion of the event moved to a covered location (Studio Catering Co.), we still had the opportunity to view the Osborne Family Lights. But they were not “dancing” due to the weather and TORNADO WARNINGS (wha???!!!???!?!). And, did I mention it was pouring? So it wasn’t all that hard to find a spot to watch whatever WAS happening out there, since everyone else was smart enough to go back to their hotels during said tornado warnings. Fortunately, our friend, Mealtrip, took some pics on his Frozen party night that show you what the event looks like when the weather behaves itself! Let’s head back to the Streets of America for a close up of the festivities. AtmosphereIf you’ve purchased tickets for the Frozen Holiday Premium Package, you’ll want to head to Guest Services first, where you’ll pick up your credential. Hold onto this. It gets you into the different experiences included in your package. Frozen Dessert Party Credential Consult the back of the badge for a map of the route you should take to get to the area where the party is set up. Back of Credential with Map In addition, you’ll find a rip-off coupon-type thing at the bottom of the credential; you’ll need this to pick up your Special Pin and Lithograph. I waited until the end to pick mine up so I wouldn’t risk setting it down someplace, but I’ll go ahead and show it to you now. Pin and Lithograph So, in order for this to make sense, I’m going to show you what the Frozen Dessert Party should look like — and then what it looked like for me. Normal Frozen Dessert Party SetupWhen it’s not raining, you can expect to attend the Frozen Dessert Party in a special reserved area on the Avenue of the Americas. For those who know DHS well, it’s called the “teardrop.” Here’s a shot of the seating area at dusk before the lights came on. You can already see the crowds building in anticipation of the lights coming on. Seating at Dusk Before the Lights Come On And once they’re on — lookout! This area can become extremely crowded. And that can become the opposite of fun very quickly. But the seating area of the dessert party gives you a fair amount of elbow room to enjoy the display. Beverage Table and Gorgeous Lights Tables laden with sweets are positioned with plenty of room surrounding them so they’re easily accessible. Part of the Set Up Once the guests arrive, you can really get a feel for the less crowded vantage point. And, yes, I imagine that if this was what my experience was, it would have been worth the money JUST for the better Osborne access. After the Guests Arrive And with your credential, you can head and join the throngs for a bit to get the full effect, and then return to the comfort of your seating area. And hey, enjoy another Cake Pop while you’re at it. Guests Enjoying the Seating Area So…not bad, right? Well let’s see what happens when it rains. Alternate Frozen Dessert Party Set Up for a Rainy EveningI said it was raining, right? Yes. Like, think monsoon. There was no way that delicate pastries were standing up to the elements. And so, the party was moved to a sheltered location — in this case, Studio Catering Company. I’m not going to lie to you. This was a MAJOR bummer. First of all, Studio Catering Company doesn’t really give off a festive vibe. In fact, it’s kind of…well…ugly. Although the red and yellow color scheme clashed majorly with the decorations, I tried to focus on the festive touches. Okay. There were no festive touches. Seating The Beverage Set Up was far less captivating without that big, golden, twinkly tree. Beverage Set Up at Studio Catering Company But the lights were still there, thankfully. Even though many of them were turned off, and none of them — as I said — were dancing due to those tornado warnings and rain. Osborne Lights And the wet pavement added a little extra sparkle! See? I can look on the bright side. ;-D Osborne Lights — Extra Shiny in the Rain! And rain or shine, we can all achieve a little perspective on things we should be hoping and wishing for, yes? Peace On Earth Be sure when you take your next trip through the Lights to keep an eye out for Hidden Mickeys! Bicycles — and a Little Something Extra But since we were getting a little damp out there, it was time to head back to the eats. EatsThe catering team did manage to make the best of the table decor, so you definitely get the Winter theme where the food is concerned. Dessert Display There were a lot of different drink options, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. I also appreciated that the specially-themed drinks came in both hot and cold varieties. Let’s check out the non-alcoholic specialty drinks first. The Coronation Cider was Apple Cider mixed with a bit of Caramel Syrup. Think LeFou’s Brew, but not slushy in consistency. Coronation Cider Olaf’s Winter Sunset, a mixture of Passionfruit, Orange, and Guava Juices, is pretty much Lilikoi Juice, Jungle Juice, POG juice, what have you. Olaf’s Winter Sunset If you prefer something warm, you can try Wandering Oaken’s Peppermint Hot Chocolate. It’s basically Hot Chocolate with White Chocolate Syrup, with the Peppermint Flavor coming courtesy of little Candy Canes that you can add to your cup. Wandering Oaken’s Peppermint Hot Chocolate And now for the Grown Up Drinks. Kristoff’s Icy Summer features Coconut Rum, Pineapple Juice, and Toasted Marshmallow Syrup. Please don’t get this if you go to the party. It was truly vile. Kristoff’s Icy Summer There’s an adult Cider option as well — Southern Isles Cider features Bourbon, Apple Cider, and Caramel Syrup. Much better. Southern Isles Cider Peppermint Sauna Hot Chocolate adds a little Bailey’s Irish Cream to the mix. Peppermint Sauna Hot Chocolate In addition to the themed drinks, there were a few more traditional beverages as well — Coffee, Hot Tea, and cans of Soft Drinks. There was also plenty of water. Coffee and Tea Canned Soda Available Now that we’ve taken a look at drinks, let’s check out dessert. Most of the spread consists of mini pastries, but there’s at least one larger scale option thrown in. There are Anna and Elsa Cupcakes, in Vanilla and Chocolate, respectively. Anna Chocolate Cupcakes Elsa Vanilla Cupcakes And Olaf has his own dessert too — Cake Pops! Featuring both Chocolate and Carrot Cake. Olaf Carrot and Chocolate Cake Pop I’ve gotta admit…the Little Guy was pretty delicious. Olaf Cake Pop — Inside You’ll also find another nod to Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post with a Double Chocolate S’mores Tart. Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post and Sauna Double Chocolate S’mores Tart Sven apparently enjoys Key Lime Tarts? Well. Okay. Sven Key Lime Tarts with Red and Green Glitter Cream Puffs get a glittery topping. Snow Queen Blue Glitter Cream Puff A Fondue-Infused Brownie seemed like a cross between Warm Pudding and Cake. And I do apologize for the picture, but there was never, ever a moment that this didn’t look disgusting during the party, so I did the best I could. ;-D Chocolate Fondue Infused Brownie Toppings for the Brownie included Whipped Cream and Berries. Whipped Cream for Brownie Berries for Fondue Brownie There were also Gummy Worms. Because…I don’t even know because. I think worms and dirt? Gummy Worms for Fondue Brownie Living Rock Bon Bons were cute little Krispie Treats with colorful Chocolate Topping. Living Rock Bon Bons And guests watching carb or sugar intake could enjoy the Kristoff No Sugar Added Lemon Curd. These were my favorite, because lemon curd. Kristoff No Sugar Added Lemon Curd And that was a wrap! Desserts consumed, I decided to take advantage of the smaller-than-normal crowds and check out the lights up close once more. OverallSo, I was pretty disappointed when the party was moved under shelter. Don’t get me wrong; Disney did the right thing. But I would really have appreciated a little more effort on their part to make the experience at Studio Catering Company a little more…magical. Throw some covers over all of that yellow and red. Jazz up the space a little more. You’re Disney! I know what you’re capable of. And we pretty much knew for days on end that it was going to rain, rain, rain that night. I have to say that for me, this package really didn’t live up to the cost of the ticket. I may have felt differently had the weather been better, or had I had a kiddo who LURVED Frozen. But since inclement weather is always a strong possibility, I’d like to see the events team come up with a much more robust Plan B. Now, if you DO have a Frozen-loving kiddo (or if you can’t get enough Frozen goodness in your life yourself), or if you’re willing to gamble on the weather and grab a ticket to get a great VIP view of the Osborne lights — especially during the super busy holiday weeks — you can pick up tickets for the package here. Today we’re visiting a Fantasyland classic… Pinocchio Village Haus Restaurant! Learn About:Pinocchio Village Haus Magic KingdomDisney World Restaurants We were here not all that long ago, trying out the recent addition of Pesto Knots to the menu at this joint, which simultaneously features Bavarian architecture and Italian fare. And Pinocchio’s is always a great place to check out — especially in the hot summer months — for their character-inspired frozen Slushes (not to be confused with “Frozen” character slushes… just so we’re clear on that ). But it’s been a while since we’ve reviewed a full-on meal here… or three! So, that’s what we’re here to do. Welcome to Pinocchio Village Haus! AtmosphereHave you ever wondered about the German-style architecture of this restaurant for a story that’s set in Italy? Pinocchio’s Village Haus Pinocchio’s creator, Gepetto, is decidedly Italian, but even the Pinocchio atop of the ordering section reminds me a little of a German oompah figurine. Pinocchio To learn a little more about this unique style choice, check out this guest review for some insight! Aside from the architecture, other hallmarks at Pinocchio’s are the gorgeous murals depicting characters and scenes from the film. Geppetto Mural “Give a little whistle” True, there are no roses with magically falling petals or indoor thunderstorms a la Be Our Guest Restaurant, but if you really take a look at the artwork (entire rooms and murals are dedicated to specific characters), I think you’ll agree that they are stunners in their own right. It’s straight-up analog, and it’s pretty great. Blue Fairy Mural I’ve also always enjoyed some of the beautiful stained glass work here. Stained glass Stained glass chandelier and window seating But that’s not all — Pinocchio’s is the only restaurant in Magic Kingdom where some of the tables provide front row views of a beloved attraction: “it’s a small world.” “It’s a Small World” viewing area Speaking of tables, due to the busy-ness of this spot, the process of getting one can be a bit different here. This picture of a Cast Member holding a sign explains some of the process — she is holding a “Reserved” sign. Cast Member holding “Reserved” sign The area was not reserved for a specific party or group or anything. Apparently they do this so that people don’t hold a table while the rest of their party is getting food — only people with trays of food are allowed in the “reserved” sections. This isn’t a well-known fact, though, so what can end up happening is that the whole place can get packed, while the reserved sections are practically empty. (These included the area next to “Small World” on my visit.) All I had to do was ask how to get into the reserved section, and it was easy enough thanks to the nice Cast Members working in the area. So we’ve got our seat and our food… let’s dig in. EatsSince the story of Pinocchio is based in Italy, so is the menu at the Village Haus! The focus is on flatbreads, specifically Pepperoni, Caprese, and a spin on tradition with a Barbecued Beef Flatbread. Pinocchio’s Village Haus menu You can also find a Caesar Salad, Mediterranean Salad, and a Meatball Sub. And there is a relatively recent addition for those less interested in the Italian Fare: a Spicy Chicken Sandwich (good ol’ Chicken Breast Nuggets can be found here, too). Pinocchio’s Village Haus menu Pinocchio Village Haus printed menu Sides include a Caesar Salad, French Fries, Pesto Knots, and Tomato Basil Soup (but keep an eye on the rotating screen menu on your visit — sometimes Italian Wedding Soup is an option as well). Pesto Knots We went with the Pepperoni Flatbread, Meatball Sub, and the Spicy Chicken Sandwich to mix it up a bit. I’d heard mixed reviews on the Meatball Sub, and I’m happy to report that I must have hit it on a really good day. Meatball Sub The mozzarella topping the meatballs spilled over onto the soft bread, and the marinara provided great flavor — even though it can get a little messy (like any good meatball sub), it’s worth it. Inside the Meatball Sub Onto one of the star dishes: Pepperoni Flatbread. Pepperoni Flatbread Unfortunately, this one didn’t hold up quite as well. All the elements were there: plenty of cheese and pepperoni covering the whole of the flatbread, and the bread was nicely golden brown. Unfortunately, the overall effect came together as… just okay. Pretty bland and unmemorable, to be honest. Maybe if the pepperoni was crisped just a bit to impart more of the flavor, that might do the trick. But overall? Meh. The Spicy Chicken Sandwich is a pretty darn huge breaded chicken breast topped with tomatoes and lettuce (fresh and not at all wilted). I like that the tomatoes are diced — it makes for a little less mess overall. Spicy Chicken Sandwich Don’t be too concerned with the word “spicy.” It’s not especially so — just enough to give the chicken an extra burst of flavor. I really like this sandwich, and am glad to know that it has a home again, since it got booted off the menu at Golden Oak Outpost in favor of the Loaded Waffle Fries. Granted, you can also find something similar at Tomorrowland Terrace, but really… when is that ever open? Of course, I needed something to wash everything down, and since a rotating cast of slushes is big on the menu at Pinocchio’s, it was kind of a no-brainer. We’ve tried the Blue Raspberry Slush in honor of the Blue Fairy, and the bright green Jiminy Cricket Slush that appeared for a little while around the holidays last year, so I decided to go with the Lemonade Slush. Lemonade Slush You can find the Lemonade Slush at several locations throughout Magic Kingdom, including Cheshire Cafe and Sunshine Tree Terrace. It’s the same sweet-with-a-great-punch-of-sour situation at Pinocchio’s, with the difference being the addition of a berry flavor and whipped cream on the top to cut a bit of that pucker-up punch. It’s definitely a bummer that the featured menu item didn’t live up to it’s role, but there is enough that is working here to make a stop at Pinocchio’s worth your while. OverallIt’s no secret that lunch at Be Our Guest Restaurant is all the rage these days in regards to Fantasyland Counter Service (or Magic Kingdom Counter Service in general), and understandably so. But there are still treasures to be found outside of Be Our Guest, and I’d argue that Pinocchio Village Haus is one of them. Even if the menu’s focus on flatbreads doesn’t match your preference, it’s worth a stop to grab a snack (we’re longtime fans of the soup here, especially in these cooler months) and do some serious exploring of the artwork, or some serious relaxing while overlooking “it’s a small world” or sitting on the upstairs balcony overlooking Fantasyland. While it may not be a must-stop on every trip to the Magic Kingdom, the old school charm stands the test of time, in my opinion. This week, we shared the exciting news that Disneyland Resort will celebrate the opening of spectacular new “Frozen Fun” at Disney California Adventure park, featuring magical adventures with characters from Disney’s blockbuster hit, “Frozen”. As promised, we featured more seasonal treats this week from Walt Disney World. Splendor at the Beach Club Gingerbread Carousel And what better place to start than the Grand Floridian’s Gingerbread House?! And while the Beach Club’s seasonal carousel was still under construction, we did admire the gorgeous goodies for sale at the Beach Club Marketplace. One of my favorite places at the Disneyland Resort is Buena Vista Street. The newly re-themed entrance to Disney California Adventure park is a walk back in time Los Angeles of the 1920s and ‘30s. This area brings guests even deeper into the nostalgia of this time period during Holidays at the Disneyland Resort. Here are five ways to enjoy the season on Buena Vista Street: 1. Oh! Christmas Tree! Just behind the “Storytellers” statue lies the spectacular 50-foot Christmas tree – the can’t-miss sight of the season on Buena Vista Street. (Really, you can’t miss it. It’s huge.) The tree is covered with charming, vintage-style ornaments that recall Christmas in the 1920s and ‘30s. 2. Here Comes Santa Claus Buena Vista Street is one of the places where you can find Santa Claus himself at the Disneyland Resort during the holiday season, in his classic department store setting at Elias & Co. 3. Carol of the Bells Join in a carol or two with the Buena Vista Street Community Bell Ringers. Throughout the day, they perform renditions of classic Christmas carols, accompanied by handbells. 4. Deck the Halls In addition to the vintage-style ornaments on the Christmas tree, the 1920s and ‘30s theme continues all the way down the street, through garlands, ribbons and special decorations on the light poles, storefronts and even inside the stores. Lunch, Dinner…and now Breakfast? Learn About:Be Our Guest Restaurant -- Dinner Magic KingdomDisney World Restaurants Be Our Guest Restaurant has proven to be extraordinarily popular. It’s incredibly difficult to get a dinner advance dining reservation (ADR) a full two years after its opening. And lunch continues to be such an attraction that Disney seems to be moving toward a FastPass+ System for the quick service meal — something unprecedented. But it’s looking more and more like we’ll all have another shot at dining in Beast’s Castle in the very near future. Be Our Guest Restaurant to Begin Serving Breakfast in February?We’ve been monitoring rumors forever it seems that Be Our Guest would begin serving breakfast. And it looks like that rumor is about to become a reality. Our team has been checking daily to see if Be Our Guest is offering a breakfast ADR option…and as of today, they are! Now, before you run over and excitedly jam up the Disney website , I should mention that, while the breakfast option is showing up, it’s not bookable yet. When we try to book a table, we’re told that we can’t at this time. Be Our Guest Breakfast Option on Disney World Website But here’s what we DO know: hours for breakfast are showing as 8 AM until 10 AM daily, beginning on February 25. And this is the same protocol that we saw prior to both Trattoria al Forno and Spice Road Table opening for ADRs — the option showed up before you could actually book a table. AND — since we’re talking about ADRs here, it’s looking like breakfast will be a sit down, table service option, like dinner. Ballroom Seating For Breakfast? Yes Please! We’re not sure if there will be characters there (Beast? Anna? Elsa?) or not, but we can’t wait to find out! In the meantime, keep your fingers hovering over that “booking” button folks!
