Are you ready for all the BIG changes coming to Disney World? EPCOT Lots of things are changing in the parks from now through next year. EPCOT’s transformation is set to be complete by the end of 2023 and January brings about some important logistical changes. The way you do things in the parks will change significantly on January 9th. But what does that actually mean for you? Three huge changes are coming to Disney World on January 9th. That is the day that park hopping returns to normal, the Dining Plan returns, AND you will no longer need park reservations (for date-based tickets). So what are some things about these changes that Disney hasn’t told you? We’re here to fill you in! You Can Get TONS of Food Disney is officially bringing back their dining plans! For vacations starting on or after January 9th, you can select one of the two dining plans– Disney Quick-Service Dining Plan or Disney Dining Plan. Regardless of which option you pick, one thing is certain– you’ll get a TON of food. Hot Cocoa Beignets The Quick-service Dining Plan is for those on the go all the time and limits you to two quick-service meals and no table-service meals. But with both dining plan options you get one snack credit per day. If you get everything you’re allowed each day (2 quick service meals and a snack credit for the quick-service plan and one quick-service, one table-service, and one snack credit for the regular dining plan), you’ll be eating ALL DAY. Previously Dole Whip counted as a snack credit! But you don’t have to use the allotted credits on specific days. You can stack up your snack credits and use them all in one day of your trip, if you want to! They just need to be used within your trip dates (or lose them). That could mean three Dole Whips or six Spring Rolls in one day! Pepperoni and Cheese Spring Rolls The regular dining plan offers one table-service credit as well, which could be a buffet. You can fill up on all the food you can eat at the Biergarten Restaurant in EPCOT. Biergarten Trust us, the Disney Dining Plans gets you a lot of food, you’ll be hard pressed to eat it all. Check out our video below for more Dining Plan info! You Can Wake Up And Decide Which Park To Visit Day-Of Another thing that changes on January 9th is the park reservation system. Starting that day, date-based ticket holders will no longer need park reservations. That means that you can finally wake up one day and just randomly decide which park you want to visit that day! Disney’s Hollywood Studios While having a plan is a good technique for your Disney World vacation, sometimes, it’s nice to be spontaneous! By not needing reservations any longer, you can finally do that. And because of another change coming January 9th, you don’t have to be too worried about getting to your favorite park. You Can Visit All Four Parks In One Day “Normal” all day park hopping is returning to Disney World on January 9th! We might be the most excited for this 2024 Disney update. This means that you no longer have to wait until 2PM to hop to another park. With this limit being removed, it means more time to visit more parks. Animal Kingdom You can eat breakfast in one park then head over for a mid-morning snack in another, and still have time to ride a ride at a different park all before 2PM! Before the limit of 2PM was put on park hopping it used to be a challenge to visit all four parks in one day. Now, we can conquer every Disney World park in one day, again. There’s a lot of benefit to this new change, and we’re looking forward to Disney going back to our “normal.” 15 Expert Tips for the NEW Park Hopping Rules in Disney World Until then, we’ll keep making park reservations and waiting until 2PM to hop to EPCOT. Holidays in Disney World Believe it or not, a ton of folks enjoy spending the holiday in the parks, and if you’re one of them — you need to be prepared. Park pass reservations aren’t going away for most guests until 2024, which means you might need to secure yours if you want to experience Christmas in Disney World. And, if you’re looking to visit Magic Kingdom, we’ve got an important update for you. If you haven’t snagged a Magic Kingdom park pass for Christmas Day — don’t panic! A BRAND-NEW land has officially opened up in EPCOT! EPCOT’s new park map! When EPCOT first announced its transformation, we learned that the park would be split into four neighborhoods — World Nature, World Showcase, World Discovery, and World Celebration. We’ve been able to fully explore three out of those four lands for a while, but we’ve been waiting for a large portion of World Celebration to reopen for YEARS. And if you’ve been itching to walk through the middle of the park again, we have great news! World Celebration is the area of the park that’s essentially in the middle of EPCOT. Home to Spaceship Earth and many of the areas surrounding it, this neighborhood has been marred by miles (well, maybe that’s an exaggeration) of construction walls for years now. Construction Walls But as of December 5th, 2023 — many of the walls have come down! Come along with us on a tour of the NEW World Celebration gardens in EPCOT. To get to this newly uncovered area, you’ll need to head behind Spaceship Earth. Directly behind the park’s icon is the spot called Dreamers Point. It’s home to a new statue called Walt the Dreamer. What a perfect addition to celebrate Walt Disney’s birthday! Dreamers Point The statue sits on a bench where visitors can take a photo with him. He looks out over EPCOT. Walt Disney Statue Beyond the statue there are gardens spread throughout four quadrants. They meet in the middle at a new planter that offers a great photo spot with Spaceship Earth in the background. If you look at this with an aerial view, the ground forms the EPCOT logo. The big planter The first quadrant of the gardens is located near Journey of Water — Inspired by Moana. Here, there is a little bit of bench seating. Gardens near Journey of Water The main draw in this area is that we spotted Daisy Duck having a meet-and-greet! There wasn’t too long of a line for her this morning. It’s Miss Daisy! The next quadrant is located near what will become CommuniCore Plaza and CommuniCore Hall, next to the World Nature side of the park. This area is home to a LOT of seating — tables and chairs, benches, hi-tops, and several outdoor outlets for charging your phone. There’s a lot of seating over here This is likely going to be a popular seating area in the future, and there’s a nice bit of shade over here. They even have outlets! Moving across to the quadrant nearest Creations Shop, this area is a little bit more open. We spotted Pluto having a meet-and-greet back here! Hey Pluto! There are some benches in this area as well. Benches And finally, we have the quadrant nearest Connections Cafe, up by Dreamers Point and Spaceship Earth. This spot has Adirondack chairs, tables, and benches. There are more outlets over here. Chairs This is a great spot to come and sit after you’ve picked up your coffee at Starbucks! Nice spot to chill Spread throughout these gardens are lots of planters and some new lighting. The lighting in the area will coordinate with the Beacon of Magic on Spaceship Earth at night, so make sure to check out that effect when you visit! These will light up at night! There’s only so much time in one day at EPCOT to really get the best of everything they have to offer. EPCOT And with so many wonderful restaurants, snacks, festivals, and drinks to choose from, how do you know which are the BEST? Luckily, you’ve come directly to the experts to help you decide which EPCOT drinks are the best bang for your buck! With only so many hours to spend in the park and a budget to stick to, finding the right combination of drinks to feel like you’ve really tasted the best EPCOT has to offer can be quite the challenge, but challenge accepted, friend! EPCOT Assuming you’re only going to buy 3 drinks in ALL of EPCOT (yes, seriously… only 3), we’ve painstakingly narrowed down the good the bad, and the elite to make sure you walk away satisfied based on our experiences with everything we’ve tasted and… let’s face it, we’ve tried them all. So let’s get to it — here are our top 3 drinks you don’t need to sleep on when visiting EPCOT. Orange Slush First up we’re making a stop at Les Vins des Chefs de France in the France pavilion. This beautifully themed beverage cart serves up an array of wines, champagne, and beer but the slushes are what we keep coming back for — specifically, the Orange Slush. Orange Slush This slush drink is made of Grand Marnier, Rum, Grey Goose Orange, and Orange Juice, and is basically an adult version of a Creamsicle in liquid form. You can opt for the traditional size or a GIANT slush aptly called Le Geant Slush if you’re willing to spend a few dollars more. Read our review of the Grand Marnier Orange Slush Ice Cream Martini Keeping in theme, we’re not wandering too far because who doesn’t love a good balance to the mix. Our next choice can be picked up at L’Artisans des Glaces in France. We’re snagging an Ice Cream Martini! Ice Cream Martini with white chocolate ice cream and whipped cream vodka There’s so much creativity that can be built into this one because it’s a drink AND a dessert. You’ll get to choose your favorite flavor of ice cream (bonus points if you’re feeling adventurous and pick multiple flavors) and add in your preferred drink between Grand Marnier, whipped cream vodka, or rum, and top it all off with a sweet drizzle and whipped cream. You’ve practically had a full dessert! Read our review of the Ice Cream Martini La Cava Avocado We’re taking you all the way around the other side of the World (Showcase) for this next drink but we promise, it’s worth the trek. Meet the La Cava Avocado aka the Avocado Margarita from La Cava del Tequila in Mexico. Avocado Margarita This creamy margarita is made with Cava Avocado Tromba Blanco tequila, melon liqueur, fresh avocado, and lime juice served frozen with a hibiscus salt rim. If the ingredients alone weren’t enough to get your mouth watering you’ll just need to trust us because it will surprise you in a good way! Read our review of the Avocado Margarita That rounds out our picks for the most critical three to make sure you don’t miss but if you’re really looking to expand your palette, check out our ranking of the best drink in each country of the World Showcase and be sure to stay tuned with us for the latest in Disney news! EPCOT is having a BIG day! EPCOT December 5th marks a milestone in EPCOT’s transformation process! A lot is happening inside the park and we noticed that it has caused a change in Disney’s app. Let’s take a look at what’s been updated! Tuesday, December 5th is a day of celebration in EPCOT –more like a world of celebration as its new “neighborhood,” World Celebration, officially tore down some of its walls! As of today, you can visit the World Celebration Gardens and the “Walt the Dreamer” statue. But how do you know where to look for these new locations? Possibly a park map OR the My Disney Experience app! ©Disney We noticed, today, that the EPCOT map on My Disney Experience had changed. It now includes the World Celebration Gardens! This is a major hint that EPCOT’s transformation is finally nearing completion. The gardens are there! ©Disney They even have a tiny Walt statue showing up! ©Disney World Celebration is where you can find the new gardens which feature a big planter dedicated to the rings of EPCOT’s logo and the new “Walt the Dreamer” statue. Being prepared for anything on your Disney vacation is something we can’t stress enough. Christmas Decor on the Castle Wait times can be long, your favorite ride might be closed for maintenance, and severe weather can impact your trip whether you’d like it or not. Disneyland visitors learned that firsthand on the evening of December 4th when an earthquake was felt in the parks. KABC7 has reported a 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck at 8:09PM PT on Monday, December 4th, 2023 — just two miles north of Disneyland Resort. The epicenter was reported to be one mile east of Fullerton, California. Disney California Adventure People at the epicenter of the earthquake reported feeling a single, strong jolt — but reports also came in from people who were at Disneyland and could feel the impact. In fact, Disney shut down 35 rides due to the strike. ©Disney No damage or injuries have been reported at this time, but we will let you know if that changes as officials are still assessing the situation. It’s a very big day! Walt the Dreamer Statue December 5th marks Walt Disney’s birthday, and in honor of the man who started it all, Disney chose the day to officially open a NEW area of EPCOT. The World Celebration Gardens and Walt the Dreamer Statue are two brand new additions to the park — part of the transformation that has been in progress for the past few years. Now, the area is officially open to guests, and of course — there’s a new park map to feature the new areas. Say hello to EPCOT’s new park map! The front of the map features the Figment character that you’re now able to meet in the Imagination Pavilion. The new park map! When you open the pamphlet, you’ll be greeted with not only a visual map of the entire park, but with a bulleted, color-coded list of each of the rides, attractions, stores, and restaurants you’ll be able to visit — just like always. Here it is! What’s new, though, is that the visual map now features the World Celebration Gardens, which is the circular area that you see right above Spaceship Earth. Look! Before, the area just said “World Celebration” and was green. See it below: Previous EPCOT map Not only is the new area now represented on the map, there are new experiences listed as well. Below, you’ll see a section of the map that’s dedicated ONLY to “New Magic,” and you’ll see the Luminous: The Symphony of Us nighttime spectacular as well as Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana. New events! Wow! Things are feeling officially official! We can’t wait to see what else is in store! There are new things popping up at Disney World seemingly every day. Disney World In order for all this change to happen, though, we sometimes have to say goodbye. Over the years, we’ve bid our farewells to attractions, shops, and even restaurants. Over the past couple years in particular, though, there have been several temporary closures for Disney World restaurants, and even a few permanent closures, or closures that happened a WHILE ago but still haven’t reopened. Let’s talk about it! These five Disney World restaurants were confirmed to be permanently closed, or have been closed for the past few years. Tokyo Dining In early 2023, Tokyo Dining in the Japan Pavilion of EPCOT closed for what many of us thought was a temporary closure for refurbishment. Tokyo Dining However, the eatery didn’t come back at all and was replaced with Shiki-Sai Sushi Izakaya in the fall. Trail’s End (Table Service) Trail’s End Restaurant at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground closed in the spring of 2023 for refurbishment. Trail’s End The restaurant re-opened in July 2023, and the restaurant as we knew it was gone! Instead of a table-service eatery, it is now a quick-service restaurant. 1900 Park Fare and Garden View Tea Room After the 2020 closures due to the pandemic, there were two spots at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort that never opened back up. 1900 Park Fare and Garden View Tea Room. 1900 Park Fare Disney hasn’t yet said whether or not these two will reopen or if they’re closed for good. Currently, the Tea Room is being used as a game and movie room. When they do reopen, we can probably expect them to be updated! Restaurant Marrakesh Similar to the aforementioned eateries, Restaurant Marrakesh in the Morocco Pavilion of EPCOT closed in 2020 and has yet to open. Restaurant Marrakesh Since its closure, the area has been used as a relaxation station and a lounge, but not a restaurant. There’s also no word on when or if we can expect the restaurant to return. We’ll be sure to let you know if we hear word on the last three restaurants, so make sure to follow along so that you don’t miss anything! Looking for more closures at Disney World? Click here! Disney’s nighttime spectaculars are some of the best entertainment we might ever see. ©Disney The fireworks, lasers, and projections that we often see come together perfectly to tell beautiful stories that only Disney could tell. But have you ever wondered what goes into designing and creating one of these magnificent shows? Well, now you can get a behind-the-scenes look at how Disney put together their newest nighttime show– Luminous The Symphony of Us! Luminous The Symphony of Us will debut tonight, December 5th, in EPCOT. The new show will use lasers, lighting effects, fountains, music, and (of course) fireworks to continue the Disney100 celebration. Disney shared that the show will “reflect the commonality in all of us.” It sounds perfect for World Showcase Lagoon. ©Disney And now, in a new YouTube video, Disney has shared some behind the scenes of how the production team was able to create this new pageant. And yes, they acknowledge the elephant…ah…barges…in the room (or rather, the lake). Luckily, these new barges move! Unlike the barges in Harmonious, that everyone had mixed feelings about, these barges come out just for the show and go away after it’s over. This leaves the lake (and our view) barge free most of the day. The Cast Member in the video mentioned that it’s a “blank slate” before and after the show. We have big DFB food news! Crew’s Cup Lounge We know there’s a lot of restaurants (like…you know…hundreds) to try during your short trip to Disney World. But when I tell you that you should ditch the park for at least a lunch or dinner at the Crew’s Cup Lounge in Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, I mean, mean it. Seriously, this is a place you do. not. want to miss! Especially RIGHT NOW. Crew’s Cup Lounge But first, a little backstory: We had one of the best meals ever at this spot back in 2019. But when it reopened after the COVID shutdown, one of our favorite menu items didn’t come back! Recently, we got some very kind emails from some very kind readers who gave us hope that the prodigal menu item had returned! So we had to go check it out! The Crew’s Club Lounge is exactly where a ship’s crew would like to hang out. It has lots of wood decor and a cozy, darker atmosphere (ship’s crews like cozy, right?). It’s a simple design with tables, booths, and a bar. You can also spot the crew’s jackets on the walls. Crew’s Cup Booths to the Left and Tables to the Right What’s really nice about this almost hidden spot is that there’s hardly ever a wait. You don’t need reservations and can get in fairly quickly. It’s a nice relaxing spot away from the busy bustle of the parks. And they have used the Yachtsman Steakhouse menu, so you can get some phenomenal food without having to go to the steakhouse, itself. Crew’s Cup Lounge When it re-opened after COVID, many of the same menu items were available– except one (and of course it was our favorite item!!). The Prime Rib Sliders were taken off the menu! But after hearing from our readers, we knew it was time! So we headed over to the Yacht Club Resort to find out for ourselves. AND GUESS WHAT WE SAW BACK ON THE MENU!! The sliders are BACK! Yes!! The Prime Rib Sliders are BACK! Everything is right with world again – the sliders are here! When we asked the staff about it they let us know that the full-on Prime Rib has been taken off the menu and replaced by the sliders (thank the prime rib gods!). Prime Rib Sliders According to the Cast Member, the sliders were so popular that they were OVERWHELMING the kitchen! (Gee, I wonder how that happened… .) But now, they have figured out a faster way to prepare them. Heads’ up, though — they USED to be served with truffle fries (for which I always requested a cup of beer cheese). Now, they’re served with the house-made chips. Here’s hoping the truffle fries come back, too! Hand-Cut Fries and Beer Cheese Sauce There are a couple of other new options here as well – the house made chips and the Sleigh Ride Christmas cocktail (a seasonal offering). Crew’s Cup Lounge To say our day is made, is an understatement. We’re so excited that they are back! Now that they are there again, you HAVE to go try them. HUZZAH! New developments have come to light regarding the continuing concerns between Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD) board, and Disney. Today, employees were hit with a 2 million dollar bill for back taxes owed on previous job perks. Reedy Creek Improvement District Here’s some background. Following the Reedy Creek Improvement District’s (or RCID) dissolution earlier this year, employees of the district lost perks like park tickets and covered discounts. After backlash over this change, the newly created Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD), created by Governor Ron DeSantis, approved stipends for employees instead. Today, the Orlando Sentinel reported on an internal memo informing district employees that, although the Disney World annual passes were complimentary to the employees and retirees, the perk required income tax payment that now results in over 2 million dollars worth of back taxes owed. ©Central Florida Tourism Oversight Board | Glen Gilzean Central Florida Tourism Oversight District board administrator Glen Gilzean released an internal memo on the matter to employees of the RCID about their recent notice from the IRS. “[I]t has come to the attention of the district administration that the previous leadership chose not to inform staff about their IRS obligations to pay legally owed taxes on season pass benefits.” Gilzean continued, “This has resulted in our employees owing over $2 million in income back taxes.” ©Central Florida Tourism Oversight Board Disney employees went on to notify leadership that they were not informed of an obligation in tax liability for the benefit according to Matthew Oberly, who is a district spokesman. Gilzean went on to assure employees and retirees concerned about the matter that they are actively working with the IRS to come up with a solution to cover the millions of dollars owed in back income taxes. ©Central Florida Tourism Oversight Board Currently, around 400 people work for the Disney World district, which has been at the epicenter of DeSantis’ ongoing battle with Disney. The governor’s new hand-picked board replaced Disney-friendly members back in February of this year as part of a state takeover. As this new board took effect, one of their first orders of business was to take a deeper look into and modify existing perks programs they felt were “unethical” and exclusively benefited Disney over other businesses. However, this decision to dissolve a beloved perk proved divisive when employees pointed out that the complimentary theme park passes played a key factor in their decision to work for the district. Annual Pass card When the new board opted to end the complimentary Disney World pass benefit for its employees, they proposed a $3,000 yearly stipend in its place which is still in bargaining stages for unionized employees. The responsibility for the tax bill could fall on both the district and its employees, who could face tax implications if the IRS finds taxes were never paid on the Disney World park passes, according to Charlotte A. Erdmann, founding attorney of Orlando Tax Law. ©Central Florida Tourism Oversight Board “The Disney passes were likely a taxable benefit, similar to wages or bonuses,” said Erdmann. “Due to the nature of the benefit, they were unlike cafeteria plans, medical benefits and other pre-tax benefits. They are also of substantial value.” However, Erdmann is not associated with the district nor has reviewed the matter in its entirety. Reedy Creek Improvement District If the resolution that is being worked out with the IRS results in the district paying the tax liability, that means the taxpayers would be footing the bill, according to Erdmann’s initial observations. It should also be noted that Disney and its affiliates pay about 86% of the district’s property taxes currently. We’ll keep you updated on the developing story. There’s just something about visiting the Disney Parks that makes us feel like a kid again. Disney California Adventure Whether it be the elaborate theming filled with nods to our favorite childhood movies and characters, or the brief respite from reality, we love soaking in all the nostalgia and childlike glee that the Disney Parks bring us. Disneyland’s Pixar Place Hotel, a remodel of the former Paradise Pier Hotel (which is set to open on January 30th, 2024), brings all these feelings and more with nods to classic and new Pixar films. Here, you’ll find a rooftop pool bar, Small Bytes. We got a glimpse at the menu; and if we’re interpreting it correctly, we think something perfectly nostalgic will be up for grabs…but at a cost! Since guests are able to stay in the hotel and experience some of the amenities before the construction is complete, we were able to venture onto the roof and take a glimpse at some of the rooftop construction. Pool area is still blocked off While the poolside area was totally blocked off, we did get a glimpse of Small Bytes and THE MENU! We already knew that the food and bevi spot would serve up salads, wraps, cheese plates, and some signature beverages, but it was fun to see the specifics! And one thing in particular caught our eye. We spy the menu… An ADULT SNACKABLE! We’re going to take a guess and assume that this is going to be like a grown-up version of a Lunchable. I wish we knew what was included with this dish! Perhaps a fun cheese plate situation? The menu At $25, this Snackable situation had better be FANCY. Ready for this place to OPEN! Prices for the rest of the items look a little more in line with a typical Disney quick-service location, but they do seem a little high for grab and go eats (::cough:: $16 chicken tenders ::cough::). We’ll have to see if they live up to their pricetags! Small Bytes is located right next to a Finding Nemo-themed pool area, complete with a 186-foot long Crush waterslide. Yes, like, Crush the sea turtle. The whole area opens on January 30th, 2024. ©Disney We’ll continue to keep you updated with more Disney news, so make sure to follow along for more so that you never miss a thing.
