We imagine that a lot of you fly when you go to Disney World. Air travel That means you’re probably already familiar with what you need to do if your flight gets delayed or even canceled. You probably also know all about the transportation from Orlando International Airport to Disney World. You might even have a favorite airline (we know LOADS of DFB readers love Southwest Airlines). But do you know about some weird rules that could potentially keep your flight from ever taking off? Well, one regulation recently grounded five planes. Let’s talk about it! If you’ve ever looked up while sitting on a plane, you’ve probably seen those illuminated “No Smoking” lights. Those are a throwback to the days when people were allowed to smoke on airplanes. Well, to this day, there’s a regulation from 1990 that says that aircraft crew must be able to turn those lights on or off. No smoking light According to Gizmodo, United Airlines was forced to ground five of its aircraft earlier this week due to this rule. Smoking has been banned on aircraft for 24 years, but because this old regulation remains in place, the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) required that United Airlines not fly those aircraft because the “No Smoking” light couldn’t be turned off. ©Getty Images For United, four of its five Boeing models of aircraft have “No Smoking” signs that stay illuminated at all times. Those particular aircraft, though, received an exemption from the old law. The five Airbus A321neo aircraft that were recently grounded were not included in the exemption. United has removed those five aircraft from service but is seeking FAA approval to exempt those from the old law, too. For now, the FAA is allowing those aircraft to remain in service while it considers the exemption request, per Gizmodo. ©United The good news is that this didn’t result in any flight cancellations and shouldn’t affect upcoming flights. For now, aircraft will still have to file for an exemption from that old rule if they want to stay in the air. Stay tuned to DFB for more. The hustle and bustle of the Disney World theme parks can be a LOT. That makes Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground a fan-favorite place to stay within the Disney magic while still being surrounded by the peace and quiet of nature. New Fort Wilderness DVC Cabins ©Disney Many folks are STOKED about The Cabins at Fort Wilderness, which are set to open on July 1st, 2024. These 350 (!!!) Disney Vacation Club cabins each sleep up to six folks and will provide a refreshed, modernized cabin experience to replace the former ones. We’d seen glimpses of the Cabins as well as concept art, but we hadn’t yet seen the nitty gritty. Now, though, Disney has changed that for us! Disney just shared an all-new YouTube video that explores the intricate details of the new cabins. They shared five things that they’re most excited for visitors to check out when they arrive to the cabins. Let’s talk about it! 1. Mickey’s Trailer The first detail that Disney showcased was the artwork that is featured on the wall that transforms into a Murphy bed. The artwork shows Mickey and Pluto arriving to a Fort Wilderness Cabin, but that’s not all. There’s actually an Easter egg here! ©Disney This artwork was inspired by Mickey’s Trailer, an animated short that debuted in 1938. The little camper/trailer that Mickey is tugging along behind him was inspired by the short! 2. Canoe Paddles Did you know that you can rent canoes and paddles while staying at Fort Wilderness? Yep! You totally can! Disney wanted to reference this and give it more of a “lodge” feel by putting canoe paddles in the cabins. Take note of thee color, though. ©Disney The canoe paddles are inspired by the colors of beloved Disney characters’ outfits! You’ll see ones inspired by Mickey, Minnie, and the rest of the Fab 5. 3. River Country Some of the art in the cabins features postcards from River Country. ©Disney River Country was the very first water park at Disney World, located along the shores of Bay Lake and near Discovery Island. It was themed to resemble an old-fashioned swimming hole, and had some authentic country theming. The water park closed indefinitely in 2001, and three years later, it was announced that it would be closed for good. The post cards reference the old water park! 4. Storage and Other Nifty Things Disney showcased each of the mindful details that might make your stay a bit easier. For example, there are storage drawers underneath the beds, step stools in the bathrooms for little ones, and there are charging ports built into the lanterns next to the bunk beds. ©Disney Now, the pain of not being able to reach your phone while it’s charging while sleeping in a bunk bed will not be an issue! 5. Chip ‘n’ Dale Everywhere! The Cabins truly pay tribute to some of our favorite critters: Chip and Dale! ©Disney Throughout the hotel rooms, you’ll be able to spot the duo in artwork, curtains, and sketched on a mural behind the bunk beds. This adds such a playful touch that we think kids will LOVE. Sometimes, it stings when we hear about movies that were written but never made. Imagine a new Darth Vader MOVIE! The idea that we were SO CLOSE to getting something that we, unfortunately, never see can be haunting. At times, we would rather continue on with our lives in peaceful bliss than learn about a canceled project. We just found out about a comedy movie that was written by JOSH GAD (a.k.a. OLAF), but it was never made. Yes, that Josh Gad. Since we heard about it, it’s been at the forefront of our minds — and we decided that we NEED to talk about it… like, right now. That’s right, y’all. Disney legend, actor, comedian, and screenwriter Josh Gad wrote a script for a movie that would never be made. Before you ask — yes, we’re sad about it. Josh Gad Josh Gad took to Instagram to share the prologue for his movie, a sequel to the 1988 movie Twins. The sequel was titled Triplets, and reading the prologue made us wish we would’ve been lucky enough to see this movie. Where did Gad get the inspiration to create a prologue for a new movie? Well, in his Instagram post, he shares that seeing Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger in a State Farm commercial during the Super Bowl made him think of the movie, and he decided he wanted to celebrate their on-screen reunion. These were also the stars of the movie Twins, and would have been two of the stars for the sequel that Gad wrote. ©IMDb Honestly, it gets better. In the movie written by Gad, the plan was to — as the title suggests — introduce a third character to the classic duo. Who was supposed to play the triplet? Eddie Murphy. ©IMDb The idea of a comedy movie where these three play brothers is absolutely iconic. We have to be honest here; we don’t think we have ever needed anything more IN OUR LIVES. What do you think it would take for this movie to be made? Because we’ll do whatever it takes (or, at least, try). Josh Gad at California Adventure ©Josh Gad | Instagram We hope that you got as much joy from reading this prologue as we did — and hopefully, you don’t get as much FOMO. We’re going to be keeping our eyes out for updates (we really hope we get more of this) and any and all Disney news. Keep checking back in with us to see what we find next! The 32(!!) Flying can be stressful, and that stress starts from the moment you book your flight in most cases. Make traveling easier by prepping in advance! After booking your flight, you must then pack, plan, and fret over how soon you should arrive to the airport, whether you should drive or Uber, and whether or not you’ll check your bag. For a lot of folks, it’s the anxiety of finding a place to park that will allow them to make it on time for their flight. At the Orlando International Airport (MCO), a lot of folks chose to park at a shuttle-serviced lot. Now, though, those services are changing. According to Click Orlando, a longtime parking place and shuttle-serviced lot has closed to airport visitors, which leaves MCO with 3,500 fewer parking spots. Orlando International Airport Park Bark and Fly has been one of the biggest and most affordable shuttle lots since 2004, and has become reputable for its shuttle buses that are adorned in dog bones. However, founder and owner Pete Madison said that the prices to purchase shuttles, liability insurance, and general inflation has caused the business to become nearly impossible to operate. Orlando Airport The parking lot will still be available for $11 per day for those needing places to leave their cars, recreational vehicles, and boats. It’s just the shuttle service that has ended. Orlando International Airport’s Terminal C So… what can you do instead if you’re needing to get to MCO? Well, there’s always the option of ride share. You can leave your car at home and simply Uber or Lyft to the airport. Further, MCO offers parking, but it tends to fill up quickly and can be quite expensive. Orlando Airport If you typically park at Park Bark and Fly, just be aware of these changes ahead of your next flight so that you aren’t left in a panic. Big things are happening at the Disneyland Resort! Sleeping Beauty Castle A possible Disneyland expansion, officially known as DisneylandForward, has been in play since March 2021 and we could be moving closer to a decision/progress in the near future. During a recent Anaheim City Council meeting, developers went into more detail about what expansion could feature, including what would be a VERY popular new land! Over the past several years, DisneylandForward has evolved into a multi-year Disneyland and Anaheim Resort expansion and redesign. The proposed plan would put $1.9 billion over the next decade in an effort to expand the area’s lodging, retail, parking, dining options, and theme parks. The plan would eventually be in effect for 40 years and transform the resort into something bigger and better — a unified entertainment center. Part of the expansion talks on Disney’s end was the idea that this plan would allow Disney to bring more innovative and immersive attractions to the parks. During the city council meeting, Disney referenced a few of its other lands overseas, such as Zootopia Land at Shanghai Disney Resort and Rapunzel’s Forest at Tokyo DisneySea. World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland was also mentioned by name, further adding fuel to the speculation that Frozen could be coming to Anaheim in a big way. Concept Art ©Disney So where could Disney put a Frozen Land at the Disneyland Resort? Disney is already about to use some space at Disney California Adventure (DCA) for a mysterious Avatar project and, apparently, the company has even bigger plans for the theme park. With the aid of expansion, DisneylandForward proposes adding Frozen entertainment (similar to what’s available in Hong Kong) to Disney California Adventure. The proposal also suggests even more lands, attractions, and entertainment options coming to DCA with mentions of Zootopia, Toy Story Land, and Tron. The proposal also includes Peter Pan and Tangled expansions at Disneyland Park. World of Frozen If Frozen were to come over to DCA in the form of a brand new land or attractions, we have a reference to speculate what that entertainment could be. Hong Kong Disneyland’s World of Frozen boasts a peaceful and prosperous Arendelle with three shops, three restaurants, a playhouse, Frozen Ever After, and the family coaster Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs. ©Disney If expansion is approved, it is very likely Frozen will come to the Disneyland Resort. Disney is clearly banking on the Frozen intellectual property, as Frozen lands and expansions are already underway for Fantasy Springs at Tokyo DisneySea and Walt Disney Studios Park in France. With the infrastructure already in place for future Frozen expansion, it would make sense for Disney to continue the trend in Anaheim. When you work at Disney World, you go to the parks pretty frequently. You start to get a little bit jaded. Or, maybe, your eyes are just opened to things that you never notice as a theme park guest. Magic Kingdom After working at Disney World, there are things that I never do anymore during my park day, but there are also things that I never BUY anymore. Working for Mickey Mouse really teaches you how to make every penny count, and you quickly learn what isn’t worth the purchase. We’re here to tell you about those things! We’re not here to judge you for what you spend your money on. Nope, we’re just here to let you know that you might find better options elsewhere — and save a few dollars in the process. Anything at Cosmic Ray’s Yes, we’re here to talk about Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe. As one of the most POPULAR dining locations in all of Disney World, a lot of the folks who visit are a bit shocked by how average the food is at this Magic Kingdom quick service spot. 1/3 lb Angus Bacon Cheeseburger at Cosmic Ray’s It’s fine. It’s okay. It’s whatever. It’s just overpriced for the quality of food, and you can totally get better American theme park fare at other places around Disney World. (Or McDonald’s.) I was a Disney World Cast Member. Do NOT Order This at Cosmic Ray’s in Magic Kingdom Balloons The balloons that you can purchase from Cast Members at the Disney Parks (well, you can’t buy them at Animal Kingdom) are super cute until you’re carrying them around all day and it’s smacking you in the face any time the wind blows. Balloons Plus, Cast Members will make you keep the balloons at the ride entrance until you’re off the ride. A lot of the time, folks forget the balloons entirely and Cast Members have to take them to Lost and Found at the end of the night, where they usually end up discarded. Main Street U.S.A. Unless you have a baby and are attaching the balloon to a stroller, or it’s an exclusive balloon that you plan to deflate and frame as a keepsake, we recommend skipping out on these. Click here to check out souvenirs we DO love! Sunscreen and First Aid Okay, if it’s an EMERGENCY, totally buy Disney World’s sunscreen and first aid. We’d just recommend avoiding it if you can! It’s a bit overpriced, and we find it much cheaper and easier to buy it beforehand or elsewhere. It’ll save you a couple of dollars and a trip to the gift shop. Sunscreen in Disney Springs If you need medical attention in a theme park, please talk to a Cast Member! They can point you in the right direction of where to buy certain things as well as help you find the First Aid building in the park. I got food poisoning in Disney World. Here’s what happened! Autograph Books At the Disney World gift shops, you can snag all sorts of different autograph books for characters to sign as you meet them. Mickey and Friends photo autograph book and pen After working at Disney World and seeing all the creative ways folks have collected character autographs that AREN’T the books, we just don’t think we’ll purchase those ever again. (And if we do, we can find much cheaper options on Etsy or Amazon.) Pluto giving his autograph We’ve gotten picture frames signed, and have even seen folks bring in T-shirts and Stanley cups to get signed. The possibilities are endless with a little bit of creativity! I was a Disney World Cast Member, and I’m letting you in on a character secret. Bottles of Water We don’t have much to say about this one. Dasani Would you rather purchase a $4 bottle of Dasani water or have endless free ice water all day to refill your own bottle? You can get water for free! Yep, grab it for free from any quick service location. Well, we hope that you now have a few extra ways to save some money while you’re at Disney World. A LOT is going on in Disney World right now. Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort We’ve watched Splash Mountain slowly transform into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which will open THIS SUMMER. We’ve been checking out the progress of The Cake Bake Shop by Gwendolyn Rogers and Blue Ribbon Corn Dogs at Disney’s Boardwalk Inn, too. Well, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort is also busy with construction in the form of brand-new Disney Vacation Club (DVC) villas, and we’ve got a HUGE update to share with you. The last time we checked in, we noticed a new structure taking shape on the construction site. A Cast Member informed us that the gazebo-shaped structure may be a restaurant, and the space between the buildings would likely be a new pool. While we expect both those things to be added to this area, Disney has not confirmed it yet. The level of digging here, though, does suggest that this could be a pool area. There are also two smaller structures on site now (in the forefront of the photo). A pool? Here’s a closer look at the gazebo structure that may be a new restaurant (or possibly a pool bar?). Things Are Really Coming Along! The main structure pretty much has all its windows in place now, too. We can now see how the rooms will have balconies. Close-up of the main structure Now, we know that Disney uses a modular structure for rooms, which means that the rooms are built separately off-site and then fitted into the building, and it seems like that could be what’s happening here. Rooms? The biggest update, though, is that Disney has started painting the building! We can see that some tannish brown paint has been added to sections of the building. Painted! The new villas are set to open later this year, but it’s been interesting watching the whole project come together. There’s still a lot of work to be done, though. Getting there Note that if you do plan on staying at the Polynesian Village Resort, you may hear sounds of construction during the day, so keep that in mind. We’ll continue to keep an eye on the construction at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, so stay tuned to DFB for more. Many of our experts proudly wear the Disney Adult labor and you’re guaranteed to come across several Disney Adults during your travels to the Disney Parks all across the globe. Disney Adults are generally a happy bunch that have a pure love of all things Disney — but that doesn’t mean that they never get irrationally angry. The Disney Parks and experiences are prone to rule changes, and while most are reasonable adjustments, some draw the ire of Disney Adults to the point of real anger. Let’s take a look at some rule changes that have made Disney Adults irrationally angry! Limited Good To Go Days Annual Pass Many Disney Adults are either Walt Disney World Annual Passholders or Disneyland Magic Key Passholders, and with those passes they expect to get plenty of access to their favorite parks. This year, the park pass reservation system at Disney World mostly ended, but Good-T0-Go Days were installed for non-date-based tickets, such as annual passes. These days don’t require reservations, but they are also limited in number, irritating passholders and Disney Adults alike. Costume Bans Ariel and Prince Eric in EPCOT We get it — some Disney Adults want to go above and beyond by dressing up as their favorite characters at the Disney Parks. But we also get the costume rules, which state that no one 14 years old or older can dress up as characters except for certain specified events. Dressing up can get you banned, as costumes are meant for trained professionals and nonprofessionals could give off the impression that they are Disney-approved characters. If you want to look like your favorite characters, we suggest DisneyBounding, where your outfit features odes to characters, without looking like the characters themselves. Disneyland Pin Trading Regulations Cast Members trading pins Pin trading is MASSIVE among the Disney Adult community, so it came as a bit of a shock when Disneyland introduced a new rule that severely limited pin trading. The new rule was introduced in November 2023 and states that pin trading, outside of the use of a lanyard, will only be permitted in Disneyland Park near Westward Ho Trading Company from opening until 3PM. Traders are also only allowed one trading bag for pin trading at specific dimensions without the use of lights, signage, or displays. If there’s one thing Disney Adults HATE, it’s having their goodies taken away. Fast Pass Becoming Lightning Lane TRON Lighting Lane Ok, so we can’t blame Disney Adults at all for this one. After the pandemic, FastPass, a FREE ticket service that allowed guests to skip long attraction lines at the Disney Parks, turned into Lightning Lanes and Genie+, a non-free service that could set you back hundreds of dollars a day depending on your itinerary and party size. Lightning Lanes and Genie+ generally do the same thing FastPass used to do, only way more expensive and much more complicated. Honestly, there is nothing irrational about being upset about this rule change. No Selfie Sticks Remember these bad boys? Some Disney Adults like to photograph and record EVERYTHING from their Disney days, but they can’t use selfie sticks to do it. Selfie sticks are prohibited at the Disney Parks as they can be used as a weapon. If you try to bring one into the park, it could be confiscated and it’s really not worth the trouble of testing this policy. If professional-style photos are that important to you, we recommend you take advantage of the PhotoPass service at the Parks or simply ask a Cast Member to snap a photo of you with your phone — which is TOTALLY FREE! The Duck Rule Rubber Duck This one’s actually quite funny. Aboard the Disney Cruise Line, there’s actually a longstanding tradition where guests, including Disney Adults, hide little rubber ducks all over the ship for other guests to find. Disney doesn’t condone this practice and Cast Members will actively remove any ducks they find. While this feels like a party-pooper policy, it may be a little overdramatic to get upset about. Genie+ Surge Pricing ©Disney We briefly mentioned Genie+ already, but what we didn’t talk about was its surge pricing. When the service was introduced, the purchase price was set at $15.00 per ticket, per day. However, that changed in October 2022 when surge pricing was introduced, raising the price based on the day. Pricing got even more complicated when pricing became park-specific in June 2023, meaning some parks were more expensive than others. Genie+ has only gotten more complicated and more expensive over the years, so, yet again, we think the outrage is justifiable. And there you have it! If you’re a Disney Adult, you’re a major component of the Disney Parks and your passion is one of the many things we LOVE about visiting the Dinsey Parks worldwide. Staying at Disney Resort hotels is always a relaxing getaway from the stresses of everyday life. Coronado Springs From romantic getaways at Disney’s Coronado Springs to family reunions at Art of Animation, there’s something for nearly everyone! But what if the resort you’re staying at is planning to do routine maintenance? One Disney resort is experiencing just that on February 15th, and it may be a minor inconvenience for those staying there! That’s right, tomorrow, February 15th, Disney’s Coronado Springs Gran Destino Tower will be experiencing a power outage! We saw this sign today while at Coronado Springs, and it says that a planned power outage will be occurring on Thursday from 2:00am to 5:30am! Luckily, you may be sleeping and won’t even notice it! The power outage will temporarily affect the power in guest rooms. If you’re staying here during this time you may find that lights and TVs stop working during the scheduled hours of maintenance. This seems like pretty typical maintenance so there is nothing to worry about if you’re staying here! But if you use “Hey, Disney” as your alarm clock, be warned that it may not wake you up in the morning. It does not appear that other areas of the Coronado Springs Resort will be affected by this outage, just Gran Destino Tower. We are keeping an eye out for any more related news, either here at Coronado or at other resorts, to see if they will be experiencing this sort of maintenance too! This one features Donald Duck with bunny ears…inside of an Easter Egg? We’re certainly not complaining. You can find both the popcorn bucket and the sipper in Disneyland and Disney California Adventure while supplies last! ©Disney We’re not sure how long these two adorable collectibles will be around, so make sure you head to Disneyland or Disney California Adventure soon if you want to snag them. In a time when the theme park arms race is heating up, could Disney possibly be helping out a competitor? Disney World Universal Orlando Resort is getting ready to open its latest park, Epic Universe and the whole theme park-going world is going crazy with anticipation (us included). While Disney has plans for its own expansion, is it possible The Walt Disney Company is helping Universal build Epic Universe? Maybe. Late last year, Disney acquired the remaining stake in Hulu from Comcast for a whopping $8.61 billion. While Disney got complete ownership over a streaming platform it has big future plans for, it may have inadvertently helped Universal Destinations & Experiences challenge the Disney Parks for theme park supremacy. ©Comcast Comcast is the parent company of NBCUniversal and the Universal Destinations & Experiences division that operates the Universal theme park resorts. While the Hulu deal doesn’t directly involve either Universal’s or Disney’s theme park divisions, we have to consider the bottom line, especially when nearly $9 billion is being moved around. ©Universal Obviously, insinuating the Hulu deal funded Epic Universe is nonsensical and erroneous, but that doesn’t change the fact that Universal is spending massive capital to compete with Disney, and $8.6 billion certainly helps. ©Universal With all that said, Disney shouldn’t be sweating. According to The Orange County Register, Disney’s recently announced joint venture with Warner Bros. Discovery and Fox Corp. to launch a new app that would combine all of their sports platforms (ESPN, TNT, Fox Sports, etc.) and doesn’t require a cable TV subscription would be devastating to Comcast. “Since Comcast is the nation’s largest cable TV provider, that’s a real threat to Comcast’s business. Remember, Disney’s new sports alliance does not include Comcast’s NBC, so there’s no backend protection for Comcast there.” The Register concluded that the deal ultimately could have a trickle-down effect that affects the intellectual property limitations Universal theme parks might face in the future. So while Universal gets the biggest boon right now, Disney may get the last laugh when it’s all said and done.
