It’s a BIG day for Disney+ and sports fans! ©Disney Disney+ has announced a lot of changes recently. The platform debuted an updated logo, announced it will be part of a new streaming bundle, and teased the addition of a new ESPN tile on the service. But one of the newest changes that I’m MOST excited about is happening tonight at 7:30EST, and if you’ve been following the incredible career of basketball star Caitlin Clark, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Tonight, Disney+ is streaming the WNBA Opening Night doubleheader for the first time EVER. First, the Indiana Fever (and Caitlin Clark) will take on the Connecticut Sun at 7:30EST. Then, the Phoenix Mercury will face the Las Vegas Aces at 10EST. The games will be available on Disney+, ESPN+, and ESPN2. ©Disney This is a historic event for a couple of reasons. One, this is the first time ever that Disney+ has streamed WNBA games. Disney+ doesn’t normally stream sports games live, so this is a pretty rare event (though it might not be so rare in the future, as CEO Bob Iger has emphasized the importance of live sports to the company). According to the Hollywood Reporter, the games will be full, studio productions, not just animated simulations as Disney+ has done in the past with other live sports. Disney+ Another reason that this is historic is because it’s Caitlin Clark. That’s it. That’s the whole reason. I’ve been watching Clark play for a couple of years now, and y’all. If you haven’t seen her play, you need to start watching NOW. I lived in Iowa City while my husband attended the University of Iowa for graduate school (that’s where Clark played college ball), so it’s been super fun to see the rest of the country join the hype and support her incredible success. ©NBC This past season, Clark was the catalyst for record-breaking NCAA women’s basketball viewership. According to NPR, the final game of the season between South Carolina and the University of Iowa averaged 18.7 million viewers and peaked at 24 million. That’s the first time ever that a women’s final had a larger viewership than the men’s. In fact, that was the most-watched basketball game — at any level, men’s or women’s — since 2019. But that wasn’t even the most exciting game of the season (for Iowa fans, at least!). In the Elite Eight, Iowa played LSU, who beat them last year to take the 2023 championship title. Clark faced LSU’s superstar Angel Reese, who’s a legend in her own right. The exciting game ended in an Iowa victory. Reese has also been drafted to the WNBA and plays for the Chicago Sky. ©Getty Images Although Clark has played in a preseason game in the WNBA already, the game tonight will be the first she’ll play of the regular season. Disney CEO Bob Iger talked about the importance of live sports (and mentioned Caitlin Clark by name) in the company’s recent second-quarter earnings call, so we’ll likely see more games streamed on Disney+ in the future! Can you believe we’re just a few months away from the start of the Halloween festivities in Disney World? Halloween in Disney World Some people might think starting Halloween in August is a little too early, but we’re always excited about the special merchandise, snacks, and more to complain! If you’re thinking of celebrating the holiday in Magic Kingdom at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party this year, this is your reminder that tickets go on sale for EVERYONE tomorrow! Tickets went on sale for those staying at Walt Disney World Resort hotels, Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel, and Shades of Green guests on May 8th, but tickets will be available to the general public tomorrow, May 15th. We LOVE Halloween! To purchase, you’ll want to head straight to Disney World’s website. Keep in mind that you do NOT need a regular park ticket unless you want to spend the full day in Magic Kingdom or another Disney World park. Otherwise, you can just purchase an after-hours ticket and enter the park as early as 4PM. The event itself takes place from 7PM to midnight. The party is offered on select nights August 9th through October 31st, 2024. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party These tickets are expected to sell out each night, as it’s rare to see tickets sold at the main gate on the days of the event. We suggest grabbing those tickets ASAP, as soon as you know which night you’d like to go. Ticket prices range from $119 to $199 depending on the night you go, so if you’re looking for cheaper nights, book one closer to the beginning of the party dates. However, the first night is USUALLY one of the most expensive nights since tons of people want to be there for it. It’s no secret that prices have gone up on just about everything lately — but fast food prices are especially high. McDonald’s Folks are feeling the squeeze, and since we’re fans of both Disney food and fast food, we know it too. But, one major fast food player could soon be introducing a new value meal that might ease the pain at the drive-through! McDonald’s is looking to introduce a $5 value meal at US locations to bring “price-sensitive customers” back in, according to Bloomberg. YUM The meal would include four items, and customers could choose between a McChicken or a McDouble, plus a four-count order of McNuggets, fries, and a drink. The promotion would last for one month, but as of now, it’s unclear when the promotion might start. During McDonald’s recent earnings call, chief financial officer Ian Borden said, “I think affordability is clearly an area where consumer expectations are heightened,” he continued, “Obviously, they’re getting hit,” [by inflation.] McDonald’s This would be a stark drop from current McDonald’s prices, as a meal consisting of the same four items — a McChicken, fries, drink, and four-piece nuggets — costs $18.26 in downtown New York City. In San Francisco, the McChicken version is $16.15 while the burger option is $17.75. The new bundle would be priced lower than a Happy Meal in select markets, which starts at $6.39 in downtown Manhattan. Happy Meal So far, McDonald’s hasn’t made any official announcements about a $5 or value meal, or when we could potentially see one roll out. We’ve finally decided it’s time to sit down and have an important talk with the team. Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom While we all love Disney and Disney parks, we have differing opinions when it comes to a lot of things: what are the best rides in each park? What snacks beat out all the others? But there’s one thing we have debated on for YEARS, and we know you have too, so let’s set the record straight: Are sneakers or sandals better for Disney World? Now WAIT before you get mad, wearing the right shoes to Disney World is genuinely a very important question to ponder as you’re preparing for your trip. You’re going to be walking miles and miles each day, likely way more than you normally would be walking at home. This means even someone very active at home will likely be dealing with some pain in their feet if they wear the wrong shoes. Cinderella Castle To be honest, there was a clear winner amongst our team, but we’ll get into that later — for now, let’s look at the pros and cons of each! Sandals The pro-sandals people on our team were very convincing! Breea, our amazing scriptwriter for the DFB YouTube channel, shared that she HATES sweaty socks, and can’t stand changing them out in the middle of the day either, so sandals eliminate that problem altogether. Specifically, she loves her Tevas! ©Amazon Not to mention, it rains A LOT in Orlando, oftentimes when you don’t expect it. This means that if you’re wearing sneakers and you get caught out in the rain — yeah, you’ve got wet, gross shoes and socks. With sandals, you don’t have to worry about that! Both your sandals and your feet will dry quickly and you won’t be uncomfortable for the rest of the day. Grab some online! We also feel it’s important to mention here that we do have reporters who walk around ALL of Disney World in just Old Navy flip-flops and are totally fine, so if your feet are made of iron, flip-flops or sandals may be perfect for you! Sneakers However, our team OVERWHELMINGLY stated that sneakers are their favorite way to go, much to the chagrin of our sandal-loving friends. While they recognized the ease of fast-drying shoes, some of our team mentioned their pre-existing foot issues like plantar fasciitis, which means they NEED the support sneakers like Hoka’s provide. ©Amazon Now, Hokas are top-of-the-market options that aren’t cheap, but really, any sneakers that really support your feet are “the only way to go” when you’re walking miles around the park, according to one of our wonderful writers. Our team also wanted to share though that breathable sneakers are absolutely a necessity because otherwise you will be dealing with hot, constantly sweaty feet, and that’s not ideal. Check them out! Breea even said that if it’s a cold day outside, she will switch over to wearing her Skechers that have memory foam in them, so even our strongest sandal advocate can’t resist the pull of sneakers! ©Amazon We do love these Skechers because while they’re still quality shoes, they’re much more affordable! Grab some online! If you’re struggling to decide what to bring on your trip, we do suggest going with sneakers UNLESS you absolutely can’t stand your feet feeling like they’re enclosed. We strongly recommend walking at LEAST one mile somewhere at home in whatever shoes you’re planning to bring (preferably 2-3 miles) to ensure they’re feeling comfortable. You’re going to walk LOTS! While we have some brands we personally love and recommend, at the end of the day, it’s up to you what feels most comfortable to you. After years of waiting, Disney finally announced an opening date for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in Magic Kingdom! Not only that, but we’ve officially got details on how the virtual queue and Genie+ will work, and just who will get to preview the new ride before it officially opens. Disney announced that Annual Passholders, Cast Members, DVC Members, and D23 Members would all have the opportunity to preview Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and if you’re a passholder trying to snag a spot — we’ve got an update for you! Disney also announced that Annual Passholder previews for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will be taking place on June 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 20! But, things were set up a bit differently than what we’ve seen with AP previews in the past. ©Disney This time around, passholders were required to make a Magic Kingdom park pass reservation on these dates in order to try for the 7AM virtual queue drop — which is only open to Annual Passholders. The 1PM virtual queue required a park pass reservation to any park, not just Magic Kingdom. Passholders were met with quite a long queue when trying to secure reservations on the morning of May 14th. At one point, our wait time was more than an hour! Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in Magic Kingdom Here’s the problem, though — Magic Kingdom park pass reservations are already sold out for Annual Passholders on every preview date offered. This means that if you didn’t already snag your park pass for the passholder preview dates, you won’t be able to try and snag the 7AM virtual queue drop. As of publishing, though, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom still have availability for those preview dates, so you could still make a reservation at any of those parks and try for the 1PM virtual queue drop instead. ©Disney It also looks like Annual Passholders who have hotel reservations on any of these dates can still book Magic Kingdom park pass reservations, so if you’ve got a trip planned on those dates or are thinking about booking one — you might still be in luck! We’ll be keeping an eye on this situation as it’s entirely possible Disney could choose to release more park passes for passholders, but we don’t know for sure just yet. Disney Cast Members can get an EARLY LOOK at Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Tiana’s testing Over the last several days, Disney has released a SLEW of information on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, including the ride’s official opening date, how Annual Passholder previews will work, details on the virtual queue and Lightning Lane process, new merchandise, and even a preview of the attraction photo. Now, Disney has also released information on how Cast Members will be able to preview the new attraction. Cast Member previews of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will take place between June 3rd and the 7th and June 23rd and the 26th. Beginning on May 20th, eligible Cast Members will be able to register for a preview experience, and they can bring two guests with them when they preview the ride. Registration for each preview date will be open until midnight two days prior to the date or when the preview reaches capacity, whichever comes first. Cast Member Preview information Disney also confirmed some of the specifics and rules for the previews, specifying that “#DisneyCastLife previews must take place on your own personal time. This #DisneyCastLife Preview only provides access to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure during the registered preview window. Cast Members must have valid ticket media and make a separate park reservation for the day if they wish to experience Magic Kingdom Park before or after their preview.” Tiana’s Bayou Adventure — Mid-May 2024 Previews are one of the deserved perks that are available to Cast Members, and another sign that we’re “…almost there” when it comes to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. We have fantastic news for those of you who have been on a Disney Cruise before, and are planning to sail on the Disney Treasure! ©Disney After you’ve sailed with Disney Cruise Line one time, you become what’s called a Castaway Club Member. There are 4 tiers to this loyalty program, starting with Silver (1 sailing), followed by Gold (5 sailings), Platinum (10 sailings), and Pearl (25 sailings). And we just found out that Castaway Club members of all levels will get special gifts when sailing on the Disney Treasure! Disney recently sent an email to some Castaway Club members and released a video online teasing some of these new free gifts members will get if they sail during the new ship’s inaugural season. It’s hard to top Mother’s Day at Disney World! Amorette’s We hope you had a FANTASTIC Mother’s Day this past weekend! If you visited Disney World on the special day, we hope you stopped by Disney Springs and Amorette’s Patisserie for a Mother’s Day treat! If you missed out — don’t worry! We have the deets! Amorette’s Patisserie offered the Mother’s Day-exclusive Mother’s Day Éclair and we were quick to try it! Read ahead to see what we thought! Mother’s Day Éclair This dessert cost $7.25 and was described as a lemon and lavender éclair. Aesthetically, this was a beautiful dessert! The “flower” icing decorations and chocolate medallion perfectly fit the Mother’s Day vibe and were quite tasty! We picked up a hint of cream cheese (perhaps used as a base for the decorations) and the decorations balanced sweet and tart with a creamy texture. We only wish it wasn’t so hot outside because our medallion melted QUICKLY. Inside the éclair The éclair decorations had to do a lot of heavy lifting, as we found the bread to be incredibly dry. Fortunately, the filling had strong flavors of lemon and lavender and was creamy enough to leave us happy, when it’s all said and done. These éclairs didn’t last long! We thought this éclair was a nice mix of sweet and tart, but thought it was a potentially messy dessert. Overall, we thought this was a good specialty treat. Despite liking this éclair, we can’t recommend it simply because it’s no longer available! We’ll just have to wait and see if it returns for the next Mother’s Day! Between new restaurants, rides, and rethemed classics, Disney is always trying to keep things interesting and exciting for us! Cinderella Castle But, more often than not, that means a bit of renovation is needed in order to make it happen. Keeping up with the latest construction permits Disney files can be a great way to find out just what is going on around the parks and hotels, and we just found a pretty exciting one! We’re always on the hunt for the latest permits filed by Disney to get an idea of what sort of changes might be coming to the parks, and we just found an interesting one! A new permit has been filed for work over at the Carousel of Progress in Magic Kingdom. Carousel of Progress The permit is for “general construction” which could really mean anything — so we’re not totally sure what Disney has planned here. The Carousel of Progress first debuted at the New York World’s Fair in 1964 and was later moved to Disneyland before finding its final home at Disney World. So, this is a rather old attraction! Carousel of Progress We don’t think this will be a major retheme or anything, but the ride could use a little TLC, so maybe a refurbishment is on the horizon. For now, there aren’t any closures listed for Carousel of Progress, but we’ll be keeping an eye out! Fall on Carousel of Progress In other permit news, we spotted that Swirled Showcase — the EPCOT festival booth — had a new permit pulled on it as well. The description lists “Provide labor, material, and/or electrical for construction,” so we’ll be keeping an eye out for any changes here as well. It’s possible we could see something new here in time for the Food & Wine Festival! Swirled Showcase And, despite its recent extended closure, yet another permit has been filed for the Doubloon Lagoon pool at Port Orleans French Quarter — so we’ll let you know if any more closures are on the horizon for this pool soon enough. Summer is nearly here and although summers at Disney World are a blast, there are still some downsides you need to be warned about. Cinderella Castle Between large crowds and hurricane season, Disney World can be tricky to navigate during the summer months. However, one of the most glaring issues is the heat — and Disney World guests will be feeling it in spades this week! According to News 6, the Orlando area will encounter scattered storms and high temperatures in the next few days thanks to a stationary front. Can you beat the heat at Disney World? Tuesday (May 14th, 2024) is supposed to be the hottest day of the week with temperatures reaching 94 degrees Fahrenheit and a heat index of 102. Wednesday remains nearly as hot with temperatures around 91 degrees and a heat index of 99 degrees. Thursday also shows similar trends. ©ClickOrlando.com The heat is expected to feature highs of mid- to low 90s and peak heat indices between 100-105 degrees in the afternoon hours, according to News 6. Lows are expected to remain in the upper 60s to low 70s in the evenings. Rain is possible every day through Sunday, May 19th, with rainfall possibility being as high as 60% on Wednesday. Monday and Tuesday each have a 50% rainfall chance and Friday through Sunday each have a 40% chance. Thursday has the lowest rain chance with 30%. ©ClickOrlando.com If you’re visiting Disney World this week, or any week where this kind of weather might occur — we have a few recommendations. Rule No. 1 is to always stay hydrated and take breaks as needed. The heat will make it nearly impossible to go full speed. Also be sure to pack sunscreen and other protection, such as hats, cooling towels, and misting fans. We also recommend wearing breathable clothes and bringing stormwear with you to the Disney Parks, like ponchos and rain jackets. Remember, these are hot STORMS, and you’ll need to prep for the heat AND the rain. It’s no secret we’re BIG fans of the food in all the parks at Disney World. Hollywood Studios But Disney’s Hollywood Studios has some delicious snacks that we particularly care to enjoy. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has delicious ronto wraps, Toy Story Land has fun “totchos” and pop tarts, plus so much more. But there is one snack cart that we’ve been worried about for a while now, and clearly, we had good reason to be! For the past month or so now, we’ve noticed that the Grand Avenue Snack Cart was closed every time we visited it. This snack cart is located on Grand Avenue (hence its name) near the new Ice Cold Hydraulics stand and the walkway to MuppetVision 3D. Don’t worry, we’ve included a beautiful drawing of its precise location! ©Disney (drawing by us) But sadly, we have seen it all covered up like in the picture below for a while now. It’s been closed for a while now When we were back in the park the other day, we found that the snack stand was completely GONE! Disney removed the snack stand, but the umbrella that is normally with it was still there. It’s GONE! Disney didn’t give any indication of what has befallen this snack stand, and we’re certainly worried about its condition. It could be getting an upgrade or perhaps taken to never return again. We love our snacks, so one less place to grab them is unfortunate. It’s more than likely that it will return, but we’ll be keeping our eyes out for it!
