  2. Disney Genie+ and Lightning Lanes are about to change, but how will that affect separately ticketed events? Hollywood Studios at Night Genie+ and Lightning Lanes are about to change at the Disney Parks beginning July 24th, as Genie+ becomes Lightning Lane Multi Pass and individual Lightning Lanes become Lightning Lane Single Pass. These new skip-the-line systems deviate a bitt from the previous installation with advanced reservations and tier systems, but the objective is still the same. With that said, will you be able to use the new Lightning Lane Multi Pass during Disney World’s Extended Evening Hours? Let’s investigate! Disney World’s Extended Evening Hours allow guests staying at select Disney World hotels extra time in the evenings at certain Disney Parks. Right now, folks can visit EPCOT and Magic Kingdom on select nights and Disney’s Hollywood Studios will offer Extended Evening Hours once again beginning September 25th, 2024! Tower of Terror So what does this mean for Lightning Lane Multi Pass? Likely nothing. Right now, Disney does not offer Genie+ or Lightning Lane services during its Extended Evening Hours. After some research, that doesn’t seem to be changing any time soon. That doesn’t mean that Lightning Lane Multi Pass or Single Pass won’t eventually become available, it only suggests that we won’t see this change at least immediately. New Lightning Lane changes are coming It makes sense that Disney World doesn’t want to rock the boat immediately with these changes, but we’ll continue to monitor the situation and report any new updates! In the meantime, you will still be able to use Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass during regular operating hours and can take advantage of those before you take advantage of Extended Evening Hours during a given park day. Hollywood Studios at night As a reminder, the Disney World hotels that qualify for Extended Evening Hours are as follows: Disney’s Contemporary Resort Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa The Villas at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas – Kidani Village Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas – Jambo House Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Copper Creek Villas & Cabins Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Disney’s Beach Club Resort Disney’s Beach Club Villas Disney’s Yacht Club Resort Disney’s BoardWalk Inn Disney’s BoardWalk Villas Disney’s Old Key West Resort Disney’s Riviera Resort Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Walt Disney World Swan Reserve Shades of Green at Walt Disney World Resort Hollywood Studios We’ll be sure to bring you the latest updates about Extended Evening Hours and the new Lightning Lane service, so stay tuned right here at the Disney Food Blog! 3. It’s been 15 years since I started Disney Food Blog! Cinderella Castle Today, I’m reflecting on one of my first loves in Disney World. To this day, the closure of the Writer’s Stop in MGM/Hollywood Studios still feels like a personal attack. It’s the Disney place I miss the most. What do you do when there's a nearly 3-month gap between the EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival and the EPCOT Food & Wine Festival? You throw yourself a big old DFB Mega Fest! We've got loads of giveaways, behind the scenes content, and untold crazy stories from AJ Wolfe and the DFB team. Come celebrate DFB Mega Fest with us! Writer’s Stop is where the Carrot Cake Cookie originated (which then moved to Sweet Spells, and then Trolley Car Cafe). But the backstory is elegant since I’m a writer. Writer’s Stop opened back in 1999 at MGM Studios Not only did it used to be a cute li’l coffee shop — but it also used to be a tiny BOOK store. Writer’s Stop This location opened as an homage to Ellen DeGeneres’ Buy the Book from her first sit-com, “Ellen,” so it was designed to look like a soundstage. It was also used for author and celebrity signings. Inside Writer’s Stop And call me nostalgic and unwilling to relinquish the past, but the Writer’s Stop had the BEST iteration of the Carrot Cake Cookie — and nobody can tell me otherwise. Carrot Cake Cookie in the Display Case (A VERSION of the Carrot Cake Cookie can still be purchased over at Trolley Car Cafe in Hollywood Boulevard — and while I still enjoy it, I’m plagued with the ghosts of carrot cake’s past, KNOWING good and well just how SUPERIOR this treat used to be.) Carrot Cake Cookie at Disney’s Hollywood Studios — It’s good, but it’s different. Writer’s Stop closed on April 2, 2016 when Hollywood Studios shut down the Streets of America area to pave the way for Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge. Then, they replaced Writer’s Stop with Baseline Taphouse in 2017, which is now famous for its craft beers and small bites. BaseLine Tap House The backstory of the new BaseLine Taphouse is that it’s housed in an old printing factory – as an homage to the locations previous incarnation. So at least it kept that “printing” theme throughout. You can spot artifacts from Writer’s Stop on display inside Baseline. I try not to hold a grudge toward BaseLine Taphouse for replacing Writer’s Stop — I really do — but this one’s a HARD pill to swallow, y’all… and I’m still working through those big feelings, so be patient with me. I must say, I do appreciate how BaseLine TapHouse pays tribute to its predecessor through its little Easter Eggs. BaseLine Tap House Next time you’re in BaseLine Taphouse to grab a cold one, take a look at the decor on the wall. At first, it might look like a bunch of clutter. But upon closer inspection, you’ll notice the block letters hidden on the shelves spell out “Writers Stop” — they’re actually the letters from the original sign! Baseline Today, Baseline is a favorite stop for many of our team and our readers. And I can see why — but that doesn’t mean I don’t still miss the Writer’s Stop. Thanks for following us here at DFB! 4. Sometimes you go on vacation, ready to try new foods of all sorts, and when it’s all said and done you’re just searching for the one thing that will feel just like home. Soooo creamy! While Disney World is known for some of its extravagant treats and surprising food trends, a lot of times just the simplest of desserts is what our tummies end up in search of. Luckily for you, opportunity knocked and we were ready to step through the door of a much a place where time slows down for a bit (and the temperature is a few degrees cooler). It’s almost a “blink and you’ll miss it” kinda place but we’re willing to bet that if you’ve strolled right down the middle of Main Street U.S.A., you’ve probably at least glanced in this restaurant’s direction. It’s kind of hard to miss the Main Street Plaza Ice Cream Parlor with such big-name restaurants like The Plaza Restaurant and Main Street Bakery neighboring it, but it fares alright in its Victorian-style get-up. Main Street Plaza Ice Cream Parlor You might not notice the longer waits for this place on cooler days but it’s almost certain to pack in the crowd when that Florida temperature starts creeping up! Atmosphere This cozy little ice cream shop is truly something special! With its corner lot real estate facing the adjacent Cinderella Castle just down the way, it’s in a prime spot to be one of the last shops you get to before entering into one of the themed lands or a priority stop as you’re steadying yourself to leave Magic Kingdom for the day. Victorian-style sign Either way, when you stop by the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor you almost can’t help smiling at the realization you’re right where you’re meant to be. The inviting smiles from the Cast Members working behind the counter where your frozen treat will be served and the incredible blast of AC you’ll experience right as you cross the threshold into the tiny quick service restaurant is just what your body (and your sweet tooth) have been craving! Step inside There’s no seating once you’re inside and you’ll make a choice to either veer left or right to place your order in line at one of the registers just ahead of you. Once you’ve placed your order, you’ll walk your receipt over to the counter where a Cast Member will greet you, confirm your order, and serve you as soon as it’s made! Where your treats are made You can even watch a few of these treats being created while you’re waiting! Menu The menu here is tiny but mighty! Since we’re talking about an ice cream parlor you guessed it — most of the creative concoctions whipped up here mainly consist of ice cream! You’ll find everything from hand dipped shakes, to sundaes of almost any flavor, and you’ve even got a full array of toppings totally at your beck and call! Menu If you’re really looking to commemorate your treat, you can also opt for the Mickey Kitchen Sink which serves your ice cream sundae in a whimsical souvenir sink! Eats We don’t know if it was the sweet smells swirling in the air around us or that we were just that hungry but we decided it was high time we do our best to curb our sweet tooth cravings. We ended up deciding to order the Plaza Ice Cream Sundae… Plaza Ice Cream Sundae …Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich… Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich …and Ice Cream Float. Ice Cream Float But we’ll slow things down a bit and tell you all about them individually starting with the Plaza Ice Cream Sundae first. This sweet thing is made of Hot Fudge, Whipped Cream and a Cherry served in a Freshly Made Waffle Bowl with your choice of Two Hand-scoops of Ice Cream and will cost you $8.79. Classic treats We opted to have ours made with a scoop of vanilla and a scoop of chocolate ice cream, but overall is a super solid treat. We think the beauty of this one is that it’s a tried and true classic Sundae. Aside from the scoops of ice cream, you’re combining it with the creamy fluff of the whipped cream, warm gooey hot fudge, and fresh cherry topping. It melts rather quickly in the heat Everything here tastes familiar put together, which could be it’s double edge sword. While it’s effective and a well made treat, there’s nothing super outstanding about it to leave a long-lasting impression and truly WOW you with any over the top creativity. If you’re looking for something more out of this treat, we’d recommend asking to jazz it up with some more interesting ice cream flavors and opting to add additional toppings to really keep your taste buds screaming. Up next we tried out the Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich for $7.49. As you’ve probably gathered this treat is made of two giant chocolate chip cookies with a scoop of ice cream (flavor of your choice) sandwiched in between them. She’s a bit melty too! It’s another fairly basic treat that’s almost certain to please even the pickiest of dessert lovers (especially since you CAN customize it to your tastes. We really enjoyed this treat, but in full transparency, it’s extremely hard to mess this one up. This is a treat that can appeal to so many different tastes solely because of how versatile it can become with a single decision! You can opt for something sweet and clean with a classic vanilla bean or get as adventurous as opting to try out a raspberry sorbet between the cookies. That’s a HUGE scoop of ice cream in there We opted for cookies and cream on this particular visit and while it had a great crumbled cookie mixed into the creamy vanilla, we wondered if the flavor of something like mint chocolate chip might have helped give it even more personality. Half the sandwich Again though… nothing totally exceptional this go around either. That’s not to say we didn’t love our choice, but although satisfying, it wasn’t anything much to write home about either. Initially the chocolate chip cookie was harder to cut or bite into since the ice creams temperature made it a bit tougher but we found it much more agreeable to fall apart in our hands (and mouth) once it warmed up against the sun and began to melt just a bit! Last up on our list to try out today was an Ice Cream Float. This is a treat that goes way back mixing a scoop of ice cream plopped into a fountain soda or root beer beverage of your choice for $6.79. Ice Cream Float with FANTA Orange What can we say — it tasted just as great as it looks! We opted for a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream to be dropped into a FANTA Orange soda beverage and it was delightful! We were so pleased with our decision on this combo and loved the frothy bubbles the float made at the top of our drink. It’s a bit frothy at the top This was another “oldie but goodie” treat that’s been done in dozens of variations before but it’s a trusted treat for a reason. It’s easily a fan favorite because of the seemingly endless combinations you can make with it. Our combo yield a taste result of something resembling a decadent creamsicle flavor and made our taste buds run wild with excitement! Overall We were very critical on some “classic” takes on ice cream treats but they were able to hold their own. While not super thrilling treats in every combination that you can come up with, that’s kind of the point of this restaurant. Like a creamsicle There’s really a common ground for most everyone to find something that will satisfy their cravings here and we’re happy that it’s passed our taste tests with flying colors. Nosh or Not? Come on down to this leg of Main Street U.S.A. if… You’re looking for crowd-pleasing treats of all kinds! Who can resist the creamy ice cream flavors here that can be made into so many different treats and flavor combos? If you’re looking for a solid place to please even the pickiest palettes, this is a solid bet! You’re looking for a treat without all the fluff! You can be as low-key as you want with the treats here or let your imagination run wild! Shareable desserts sound attractive. If your stomach (and your budget) isn’t quite sure that getting individual snacks is the keenest idea for you and a friend or family member, this could be a great place to really make that dollar count without leaving your stomach feeling weighed down. March right on down Main Street U.S.A. if… Ice cream just doesn’t do it for you! We get it, while we’re huge fans of the frozen goop that doesn’t mean it’s for everyone. If your taste buds just wouldn’t agree (or your gut), there’s nothing wrong with nodding as you pass by. You’ve GOT to stop somewhere with indoor seating. Yeah… we got nothing for you on this one. It just doesn’t exist here. Your ideal treat is a bit more complex than what can be made here. Trust us when we say we’ve seen all that Disney World has to offer for desserts. If you’re looking for more variety, we’d understand. We’ve eaten EVERYWHERE at Disney World! Now, in celebration of its 8th anniversary, the bakery is offering a special secret menu dessert for a LIMITED TIME. There’s only one way to get this treat, and we have the details you need! On July 19th, Gideon’s founder Steve Lewis took to the store’s Instagram account to share a heartfelt post. He began by discussing the anniversary Gideon’s is celebrating, writing, in part, “Eight years ago today, I showed up at the East End Market for my first Gideon’s Bakehouse pop-up, entirely unprepared for what was about to happen. I had spent seven years selling desserts out of my tiny home kitchen and was so nervous that I wouldn’t survive doing Gideon’s for a living.” Gideon’s Bakehouse in Disney Springs He then went on to introduce a special item that will ONLY be available for one day: Stuart & Bonnie’s Ice Box Pie! According to the post, the dessert is “The perfect marriage of natural Orange and Lemon flavors.” It’s made with layers of Orange Curd under a Lemon Cream Filling, topped with an Orange Whipped Cream. YUM! @GideonsBakehouse Instragm Furthermore, the post explains that the Ice Box Pie can only be “unlocked” with the use of a whispered password phrase: “Happy Anniversary.” The pie will be available at both Gideon’s locations for the day. There will be a limit of two per person while supplies last, and the store warns that customers should, “Eat this one right away, or keep it cool, y’all. It won’t survive long in the heat.” Gideon’s Finally, the post ends with a thank you message to the store’s customers and employees, “Thanks to all of you for the amazing years of conversation and laughter. The Central Florida food scene has been named one of the best in the country, attracting an onslaught of franchises and corporate chains, but so many have kept your support with the homegrown creativity, and we all appreciate it!” Steve Lewis of Gideon’s Bakehouse Don’t forget! This special LIMITED secret menu item is available at Gideon’s Bakehouse, but only if you say the password. Stay tuned to DFB for further Disney Springs news. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure First, you get FREE transportation that takes you to pretty much anywhere on Disney World property from your hotel’s front door. For those staying in Disney World value hotels, you also get Early Theme Park Entry, which allows you access to the theme parks 30 minutes before the general public. For those staying in Disney World deluxe hotels, you also get Extended Evening Hours, meaning you can stay in the parks a few hours after the general public has to leave. However, there’s something you need to know about Extended Evening Hours in Magic Kingdom. Disney’s newest ride, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, will NOT be open during Extended Evening Hours in Magic Kingdom. So, if you were hoping to ride it during that time without having to stand in a long line (after obtaining a spot in the virtual queue) or paying for the Individual Lightning Lane option, you won’t be able to. We confirmed this with a Cast Member, although we were told this could change. TRON Lightcycle / Run Here’s the full list of rides Disney World has listed on its website that will be open during Extended Evening Hours. ©Disney However, we have confirmed that you will get to check out the newly reopened Country Bear Jamboree during Extended Evening Hours. 8. There’s a teeny tiny city in Disney World, and it’s filled with mischief and misdeeds. The Tiny Train Town! The tiny train town in the Germany Pavilion at EPCOT is one of our favorite places to stop and enjoy the ambiance in the park, but a few months back, we began to notice that it’s absolutely RIFE with crime! The residents there get into all kinds of trouble, and we’ve documented it all. Now it’s time for a weekly update from me, the town’s mayor! First of all, we have to touch on a hot topic — the werewolf has returned! Last week, we noticed that the werewolf was gone, and we were worried that the beast had finally taken down brave citizen Dave. However, Dave has returned, strong-willed and ready to defend the city against the werewolf! Let’s all cheer for Dave! (Dave is the guy in the beige jacket, if you didn’t know.) THE WEREWOLF After a recent series of derailings, we now have all the railroad depots under surveillance to watch for suspicious activity. I’ve long suspected the railroad workers of forming a coup, and we’re keeping a close eye on their activities now. Under surveillance But this week’s big notice is that there seems to be some kind of virus sweeping the town. Several of our residents have collapsed in the street, and we can only assume that this sickness is contagious. The first person we spotted with this issue was in the town square — an older gentleman collapsed in the doorway of a local shop. Oh no! The second victim collapsed outside of his home in the hills. Thankfully, his wife was there to call emergency services and get him the care he needed. His vitals are being monitored at a hospital outside the city. The second victim! Now the illness has even spread to our town’s doctor! His unconscious body was found lying outside of his office. Who’s going to save us now?! Not the doctor! To keep from getting sick, we are encouraging our residents to stay inside for a few days. Several people have already taken to holing up at home, and we think this is probably a good practice while we call in doctors from the next town over. Stay inside! We’ll continue to keep watch on both the werewolf and this mysterious plague, so stay tuned to DFB for all the updates. We’ve got the latest on the tiny train town! * The anarchy within is mostly created by natural occurrences, like giant squirrels, wind, rain, and relatively godzilla-sized lizards who frequent the town; but we find it fun and entertaining to make up fictional stories about what COULD be happening. We are grateful to the folks who create and maintain this Tiny Train Town for Disney World, as it’s one of our favorite parts of EPCOT and always has been. 11. When you come to Disney World, we want your experience to be as smooth as possible. ‘Walt the Dreamer’ Statue in World Celebration There are more than a couple of things at Disney World that can quickly overwhelm you, especially during the summer months, and we don’t want any of them to weigh you down. To that point, we wanted to go over some of the “mistakes” that even the most seasoned Disney travelers might make at Disney World this coming August so you can avoid them like a champ! Underestimating the Heat First things first: August might be a cooler time of year, depending on where you’re from, but August in Florida is still HOT. If you think you can handle the heat because you’ve “survived” a couple of days at the beach, well, think again. If you’re not careful, the heat can definitely take you out long before your first ride of the day. Magic Kingdom Summer Crowds in August So what are you to do? First, hydrate like it’s your job (it kind of is at Disney World). Bring your favorite refillable water bottle and make lots of stops to keep it topped off. Don’t forget your water bottle! Next, let me introduce you to your new bestie — SPF. Slather it on and keep reapplying throughout the day. I like to carry this in my park bag! There really isn’t a lot of shade at Disney World, and the last thing we want for you is to end up red and burned. Ouch! Not Taking a Midday Break If you didn’t know, Disney World is a marathon, not a sprint, and one of the biggest mistakes you can make is trying to power through the whole day without a break. Hollywood Studios Trust me, by midday, you’ll be wishing for a nap and some air conditioning (1PM is when we feel like tapping out). So, what you can do is plan to head back to your hotel during the hottest part of the day to take a nap, enjoy the pool, or just chill in your room. Take some time to rest at the pool! We promise you that you’ll be refreshed and ready to tackle the parks again when it’s already going to be cooler in the evening hours. Plus, you’ll have all the stamina you need to stick around for those nighttime fireworks. Ignoring the Weather You might not know that August is also smack dab in the middle of hurricane season. We’re not saying that a hurricane will definitely hit during your trip (keep an eye on the hurricane forecast, though), but afternoon storms are pretty much a guarantee in Florida. Rain So, keep an eye on the weather forecast and pack accordingly. You’ll want to bring ponchos, umbrellas, and quick-dry clothing, as they can save you from being a soggy mess. Clear Rain Jacket Also, keep in mind that some attractions close during storms, so try to stay flexible during inclement weather. No safaris today Overloading Your Day Heads up: Disney World is MASSIVE, and trying to do it all in one day is 100% a recipe for burnout. If at all possible, don’t try to cram too much into your schedule. Animal Kingdom Focus on your must-do attractions and actually leave some room in the schedule for spontaneity. Slow down, enjoy the atmosphere, and remember that you’re on vacation at Disney World! Also, it’s okay to not do everything. EPCOT Rope Dropping/Strategically Skipping the Rope Drop We’ve definitely been known to rope drop (being at the park right when it opens) a lot over the past years. Those early morning hours are prime time for shorter lines and cooler temps. Crowds at rope drop in Hollywood Studios However, if you’re planning to stay late for the fireworks, you might want to sleep in and catch the evening cool-down instead. Getting ready for the fireworks Ultimately, you’ll want to adjust your strategy based on your plans for the day. Wearing the Wrong Shoes Let’s talk footwear. Yes, those new sandals look adorable with your Disney-bound outfit, but after a few hours, your feet will be begging for mercy. Trust me, comfy shoes are the way to go. ©Amazon At Disney World, you’ll be walking MILES each day, and blisters are your number one enemy. Make sure your shoes have been broken in long before the trip, and pack extra socks to keep your feet happy. Not Being Ready for the Genie+ Changes In case you haven’t heard, Disney Genie+ (the paid “skip the line” service) is changing! On July 24th, Genie+ will become Lightning Lane Multi Pass, and Individual Lightning Lanes will become Lightning Lane Single Pass. CHANGES are coming JULY 24TH! Additionally, you will be able to buy Lightning Lane Multi Pass and book up to three attractions in advance of your trip — up to 7 days in advance if you’re staying in a Disney World hotel, and up to 3 days in advance if you’re not staying on the property. ©Disney Also, the rides you can book at Disney World will be part of a tiered system. At Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Hollywood Studios, you will only be able to select one of those top-tier rides in advance. Over at Animal Kingdom, the rides you can book are all in one tier. Here’s Everything You Need to Know About Lightning Lane Multi Pass in Disney World Those are some of the “mistakes” you can avoid making on your trip to Disney World in August. 12. One of the best parts of visiting Disney World is meeting characters! Loveable Pooh We always have so much fun interacting with the characters, whether that be during character dining experiences or at their official meet-and-greet spots in the parks. We’ve even collected character autographs on birthday cards and water bottles (which we think is genius, by the way). Now, though, we spotted a NEW character joining an existing meet and greet and WE ARE SO EXCITED. Could this be a permanent change, or was it a one-day surprise? We’re keeping our fingers crossed this new friend is here to stay! Last year, Winnie the Pooh, a.k.a. the Silly Old Bear, returned to his pre-2020 meet-and-greet spot in Christopher Robin’s bedroom in the U.K. Pavilion. He’s been meeting Disney World visitors there since then. Previously, you could only see Pooh from a distance in EPCOT while he caught butterflies and waved from afar. Winnie the Pooh We were visiting the U.K. Pavilion recently and snuck a quick peek into Christopher Robin’s bedroom, and saw a very familiar pink figure with a striped shirt. Yes! Piglet was meeting folks with Pooh at this spot. Piglet! Note that if you look in the My Disney Experience app, you’ll only see that Pooh is listed at this meet-and-greet location, so Piglet might not be there regularly like Pooh, or this could have been even a one-time occurrence. We occasionally see rare characters pop up around the International Gateway entrance of EPCOT, too. ©Disney You can also meet Alice at the U.K. Pavilion — and even Mary Poppins pops in (see what we did there?) to say hello sometimes. For a full list of characters that meet in EPCOT, go to the My Disney Experience app, click on the location button at the bottom, choose filter at the top and click on “EPCOT” and hit “Apply.” Then you’ll see the full list of character meet and greets on the EPCOT map — you can also choose “Show List” to show the full list of characters. Click on each one to see their meeting times. Alice Stay tuned to DFB for more. REVIEW: Breakfast at Hollywood Studios with RARE Characters? Say No More! Universal Orlando Not only did the new DreamWorks Land just open, but we can’t wait to experience Epic Universe when it finally opens in 2025. It seems like Universal is trying to create some hype among local fans because they just announced an exclusive new ticket deal that is seriously blowing our minds. For reference, this is the same price as a one-day Florida resident multi-park ticket for Universal Orlando, which currently starts at $199. Essentially, you’re paying for one park hopper ticket and getting to come back an unlimited amount of times through December 18th, 2024! Universal Orlando This means you’ll get admission to both Universal Studios AND Islands of Adventure. Universal shared that your visit using the ticket MUST be ON or AFTER the selected start date – the ticket will not be valid for any visits before that date. Separately ticketed events like Halloween Horror Nights are not included. It’s possible that Universal is trying to entice locals to enjoy the parks prior to the opening of Epic Universe in 2025, but either way, we’re pretty excited about this deal! Hogwarts at Universal’s Islands of Adventure Epic Universe will have five new lands, including Celestial Park, Super Nintendo World, Dark Universe, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic, and How to Train Your Dragon: Isle of Berk. 15. A LOT is about to change in Disney World and Disneyland. New Lightning Lane changes are coming Genie+ as we know it is going away forever, to be replaced by a new service called Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass. In Disney World, even more changes are coming to the service that allows you to skip the standby lines for rides. Regardless of which Disney resort you’re visiting, though, you need to do one very important thing before July 24th. Let’s talk about just how much things are going to change in Disney World. In addition to the name change, Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass will allow Disney World visitors to buy both services in advance and choose their Lightning Lane selections BEFORE their trip: seven days in advance for those staying at Disney World hotels and three days for everyone else. Rides have been assigned to one of two specific tiers, so you can choose one ride from the top tier and two rides from the bottom tier…or three rides from the bottom tier when selecting your first three reservations. Here’s a full list of which rides fall into which tiers for each park. ©Disney In addition, you’ll be able to have three Lightning Lane selections at any given time. You’ll also be able to purchase the Lightning Lane Multi Pass and your Lightning Lane Single Pass options with just one transaction. As we said, BIG changes are coming. With those changes, the My Disney Experience app will change, as these updates will be available through the app. Recently, we opened the My Disney Experience app and received a message on our iPhone. It said that in order to take advantage of these changes, you need to update your app. ©Disney However, even if you don’t see this message, the update is available, so you’ll need to visit the Apple App Store and update the app through that. On Android, the update was released on July 10th (as indicated in the update notes). If you don’t have auto-updates set up, you can update through the Google Play Store. ©Disney The Disneyland App is getting an update, too! For now, the skip-the-line service is simply getting a name change on the West Coast. The advance selections that are coming to Disney World are not coming to Disneyland. Therefore, everything will work the same as Genie+ and the Individual Lightning Lane option. However, you’ll still need to update your Disneyland app. These updates are now available for this app. ©Disney So, if you are headed to Disney World or Disneyland on or after July 24th, be sure to make sure you’re using the most recent version of the resort’s app so that you can successfully use Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass. 17. Buckle up! We’re talking about the biggest things happening at Disney World in August…and there’s a lot going on! Hollywood Studios 2024 has been a busy year for the parks with the grand opening of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, the reimagining of Country Bear Jamboree, and some major changes to Genie+. But August is bringing its own fair share of events and that’s what we’re here to chat about now. So what are you waiting for? Let’s go! If you’re heading to Disney World soon, be sure to check out our planning worksheets. You can click the image below to get our list and make sure you don’t forget a thing! Take a peek at what you can look forward to in August at Disney World! Parade Confusion To kick off the month of August, we’ve got some major parade confusion. Why? Because the Disney Adventure Friends Cavalcade AND the Festival of Fantasy Parade are not showing any times. Weird, right? Bruno (SHH!! Don’t talk about him!) Showtimes are listed through August 3rd…but starting on August 4th, it notes “No times available.” We thought this may have been a glitch (and there’s still a chance it is one) but it has been like this for days now. Festival of Fantasy is a parade themed to Fantasyland characters and stories. In the show, you’ll find popular characters like Winnie the Pooh, Ariel, Peter Pan, and Belle. Ariel in the Festival of Fantasy Parade at Magic Kingdom The Disney Adventure Friends Cavalcade (AKA a shorter parade) features a variety of characters from different cultures! You could spot The Three Caballeros, Mirabel and Bruno from Encanto, Pocahontas, Miguel from Coco, and more. What’s Going on With the Magic Kingdom Parade?! Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Calling all witches and wizards! August also marks the beginning of spooky season which means it’s time for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party to begin! The event kicks off on August 9th, 2024, and happens on certain nights through October 31st, 2024 at Magic Kingdom. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Crowds Tickets are on sale now with many dates still available. On the fence about buying a ticket? At the event, you’ll have access to exclusive access to seasonal entertainment, specialty eats, trick-or-treating, rare characters, and low wait times at most attractions (including Tiana’s Bayou Adventure). Plus, you’ll be able to enter Magic Kingdom at 4PM to get a head start on experiencing the park! Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party There are still plenty of dates with tickets available for this year’s event, so see if it makes sense for you and your group and grab them while you can! The 2 BEST Dates To Buy Tickets for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Peter Pan’s Flight Reopens Something every Disney World parkgoer has to deal with is ride closures. Whether they are scheduled or unexpected, it is bound to happen…and there are a couple of updates for August you should know about. This includes the reopening of Peter Pan’s Flight in Magic Kingdom! Peter Pan’s Flight The iconic Magic Kingdom dark ride closed on July 8th for refurbishment, however, that closure is set to end on August 21st, 2024 according to the calendar. Sometimes these dates get shifted around if Disney needs more or less time to complete the project, but for now, we’re marking our calendars with the 21st! It’s Rare That Anything Shocks Me Anymore, but This Magic Kingdom Ride Revelation Was Upsetting Jungle Cruise Closure You know the saying — as one door closes, another opens. And that’s true for refurbishments in Magic Kingdom because Jungle Cruise will temporarily close starting on August 26th, 2024. So if you were hoping to ride the most hilarious ride in the park, be sure to do so before then! Jungle Cruise Luckily this closure shouldn’t be too long. Disney confirmed that the ride “is scheduled to reopen for Guests before the winter holidays begin at Walt Disney World.” That’s when the boat ride becomes the Jingle Cruise and is decked out in holiday decor. The jokes get a holiday twist too, of course! Jingle Cruise There’s currently no reopening date for the attraction, but we’ll let you know as soon as Disney announces one. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party starts on November 8th, so we’re expecting to see it reopen by then. See what Jingle Cruise is like in Magic Kingdom! EPCOT Food & Wine Festival Kicks Off And last but not least, the EPCOT Food & Wine Festival kicks off in August! The 2024 fest runs from August 29th to November 23rd and although it’s shorter than it’s been the past few years, there’s a LOT to be excited about. EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival (2023) First of all, we know that two brand new booths are coming to the festival! Additionally, the Eat to the Beat Concert Series lineup has been announced including both new and returning artists. Learn all about the dining packages that go along with the series here. This is also the first festival in EPCOT since CommuniCore Hall and Plaza opened in June. It was originally said to be a festival space so we’re interested to see how it will be used. Could seminars finally return? We’ll just have to wait and see! CommuniCore Hall We’re also trying to be patient when it comes to the full menu announcements…but it’s hard! 18. It is possible to have a bad day at Disney… Walt Disney World While Walt Disney World vacations are designed to be – – and often are – – incredibly happy occasions, that’s not always the case. We asked our readers to share their WORST Walt Disney World vacation stories, and these are some of the wildest responses we got! Till Disney Do Us Part? Reader Jil shared a somewhat devastating story about her (ex) husband, telling us “I took my (then) husband to Disney for our anniversary, and he demanded a divorce on the first or second night of the trip — definitely not how I wanted the trip to be.” ©Disney Ouch. However, she went on to tell us that a couple of years later she made a much happier Disney World memory. “On the flip side, I learned that I have a half-sister in 2017. We both love Disney. I was planning a solo trip to Disney World in 2018, and she asked if she could join me. Our first face-to-face was in front of our resort as she got off the Magical Express!” Emergency! Several readers responded with stories of medical emergencies that took place on their vacation. One of whom, Cheryl, shared this story of her son, “Day one of our Disney vacation and we were at Hollywood Studios. My 14yo son had been complaining of stomach pain most of the day, unusual for him because he’s not one to complain, so I got him some Pepto thinking it was something he’d eaten. Pain continued to worsen, and my son was now hanging onto my shoulders because standing upright hurt. Suddenly I just knew – appendix! We headed straight to guest relations, they bring us back to the nurse, and 10 minutes later we’re in an ambulance on our way to Celebration Hospital for a CT scan. After some tests, another ambulance took us to Orlando Children’s hospital, and two hours later he was being wheeled into the OR for an emergency appendectomy. That’s a vacation we’ll never forget!” Irreplaceable While not as serious as a medical emergency, reader Sonya shared a story of misplacing an irreplaceable heirloom. He explained, “I lost my engagement ring on the Buzz Lightyear ride 3 years ago. I’m still upset. We’ve been married 40 years now. All I have left is my wedding band.” Engagement Ring Cake Not-So-Magical Luggage Mishap There are many, including us, who miss the ease and convenience of Disney’s Magical Express transporting guests and their luggage to and from Orlando International Airport to their Disney hotel. However, as reader Regina explained, the service wasn’t always magical. “Flew in for a 10 day stay. This was 11 years ago. Luggage was magically brought to your room from the bus so after checking in at the front desk we went straight to the park. Returning to our room at 11:00 pm, there was luggage in our room….just not ours! It took multiple phone calls to the front desk and searches to find our luggage. An hour later they said the bellhop would be bringing it right up. Knock on door. Bellhop was there to pick up the wrong luggage but did not have ours. I said “No way you get this luggage until you bring me mine.” I was pretty frazzled by that point. Bellhop left and returned 10 minutes later with our luggage and we gave him the other luggage. I have always wondered why he came to collect the other and not bring ours. Have been several times since but we just drive there and we know where our luggage is. Not that they have any magical way to get either people or luggage from the airport anymore.” Magical Express sign Lookout Below Reader Michael shared a rather gross story about dealing with Walt Disney World wildlife. “Was there with my first wife. Not sure if we were married yet, engaged, or just dating, but we got to the entrance area. I went to use the restroom at the entrance gates, and as I was returning to the entrance gate, three birds bombed me. I tried to jump out of the way of their “missiles”, but I got hit. Back to the restroom to clean up.” Not nearly as magical as these birds… And people wonder why they don’t have real birds in the Tiki Room. Be Wary Staying Off-Property There are definitely some benefits to staying off-property when visiting Walt Disney World. However, it’s important to keep in mind when planning your trip’s itinerary that it adds travel time. As reader John explained, “2019 we stayed at a ‘Virgin recommended’ hotel with free transport to Disney. Not only was the hotel the worst ever in history but the free shuttle didn’t pick us up till 90 mins after the park opened which meant we would have missed our early fast passes. So across the two week we was there we spent over $400 on uber just so we could get to our fast passes.” Anxiety Attack Reader Minta shared a story of an anxiety attack she suffered, which was in-turn compounded by a transportation breakdown. “Long story short I had an anxiety attack that was showing signs it would go into a full panic soon while at EPCOT. my husband and I quickly hopped on the skyliner to get back to our resort (Pop), but it was one of the few times I’ve had the skyliner “break down” on me mid-flight. We were stopped for 20 minutes in the air while I tried every breathing technique I know, all while the other couple we didn’t know in the cabin tried making conversation. When I finally calmed down later I felt so bad because that couple must have thought I was so rude, but I was really incapable of making small talk.” Disney World’s Skyliner Mother Nature Strikes As reader Tasha told us, a storm wreaked havoc with her family’s Disney Cruise. She explained in part, “Had my Disney cruise get canceled cause of Hurricane Dorian. It was like 2 hours of rain. Literally nothing worth canceling. So my family was stranded in Orlando for 5 days until the land portion of my land and sea trip kicked in. And Disney was going to take 3 business days to refund our cruise money. So after talking to a million managers on the phone and raising absolute hell with them all, I finally got our family rooms at Pop Century for base pricing of like $30 a night. They also gave us meal vouchers for the whole family of 2 quick service a day and 2 days of park tickets for everyone.” Magic Kingdom is quiet on Monday in advance of Hurricane Dorian. Food Poisoning So.Much.Food.Poisoning. Conservatively, more than half of the answers from our readers described incidents of food poisoning that destroyed their vacations. 19. EPCOT’s massive transformation has been completed, but there is still more work to be done. We’ve seen the long-awaited construction walls come down from around its new World Celebration gardens and CommuniCore Hall, revealing even more festival food favorites to munch on, live entertainment, and even a dedicated spot to meet Mickey and his pals! But Test Track is currently under construction, and we’re expecting a NEW version of the ride to debut. There’s pretty much always something new to look forward to in EPCOT! Spaceship Earth So, if you’re anything like us and want to experience the behind-the-scenes story of EPCOT’s glow-up, we’ve found the perfect way for you to see it all! A new show debuted on Disney+ that will appeal to all Disney experts and EPCOT fans. EPCOT Becoming: Inside The Transformation is now available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu and features EPCOT’s massive transformation as the core of its content. If this show sounds a bit familiar, that’s because it’s not totally new — it did have its initial debut on TV before coming to the streaming platforms. ©Disney Throughout its runtime, you’ll get an exclusive inside look at how Disney Imagineers designed, demolished, planed, and eventually built out the heartbeat of EPCOT we’ve come to know and appreciate today. Communicore Construction — mid-December 2023 EPCOT’s transformation may have certainly taken longer than we had hoped, especially when the whole world was delayed by a global pandemic, and the plans might have deviated a bit from Disney’s original concepts. It’s interesting to see the perspective of the creative minds fully invested in the project who brought it to life before our eyes. The original Festival Pavilion concept art. We didn’t JUST get new buildings, gardens, and rides out of this new transformation, though! Disney Imagineers also brought back an original EPCOT park icon: the EPCOT entrance pylons. EPCOT Fountains at Night Plus, Disney debuted a completely original nighttime show that focused on what connects us all as humans, telling our collective story through innovative storytelling! The new show that took over after the long-running fan favorite, Illuminations (which had been around for decades as THE EPCOT nighttime show), is named Luminous: The Story Of Us. It debuted after a brief run of HarmonioUS, which performed under a limited engagement to celebrate Disney World’s 50th anniversary. Luminous at EPCOT While the notion that EPCOT would always be in “a state of becoming” rings true, it seems that we can find some sense of pride in knowing that its most recent phase of upgrades to the park has come to a close. We’re constantly browsing for the next Disney+ content to binge! Stay tuned with us at Disney Food Blog for all the latest updates, news, cancellations, and more! 20. Bob Newhart, beloved stand-up comedian and actor, passed away on the morning of July 18th, 2024. via The Hollywood Reporter He died at his Los Angeles home following a series of short illnesses, his longtime publicist, Jerry Digney, announced. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Newhart was 94 at the time of his passing. A legend from Chicago, Bob Newhart won album of the year and best new artist Grammy Awards for his 1960 record, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart. Then, in 1972, the world was introduced to psychologist Bob Hartley on The Bob Newhart Show, which ran until 1978 after 142 episodes. By 1982, he was playing Loudon in Newhart on CBS, which lasted for eight seasons. He was well-known for his pauses and stammering along with his dry observational humor. “I tend to find humor in the macabre. I would say 85 percent of me is what you see on the show. And the other 15 percent is a very sick man with a very deranged mind,” he once said during a 1990 interview with Los Angeles magazine. via NBC News In 1992, he was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame. Born on September 5th, 1929 in Oak Park, Illinois, George Robert Newhart was a Cubs fan and earned a degree in commerce from Loyola University. He spent two years in the Army and later failed out of law school. He and a friend used to amuse themselves by making prank phone calls, which later became his signature stand-up bit — pretending to have a one-sided phone conversation live on stage. He was introduced to a Warner Bros. Records executive in 1950, landed a contract, and that’s where his life in show business began. ©Disney Newhart is connected to Disney as well — he voiced Bernard in the 1977 animated film, The Rescuers. Our thoughts are with Bob Newhart’s family and friends during this difficult time. The post NEWS: Comedian and Actor Bob Newhart Has Passed Away first appeared on the disney food blog. 24. “Let me see your nails!” That’s honestly one of the first things readers say to me when I meet them in the parks! Dole Whip Cupcake Since Disney Food Blog historically has been a “faceless” brand (early on it was always our policy to stay anonymous so that we could report on the true experience that any guest would receive when they went to a Disney restaurant or attraction…like an old school food critic), but in all of my photos I always had a manicure. And then, when we hired Tina (who was our primary reporter in the parks for 5 years), her nails were always immaculate — as well as the rest of her; she’s a style ICON!!! So the Disney Food Blog “manicure” was one of our unforeseen calling cards! We didn’t require our reporters to have manicures or anything. It just happened. And I’m going to be honest with you about WHY. Orange Lemonade with Sweet Cream Foam I’m a nail-biter. A horrible nail-biter. I have been since I was tiny. I bite my nails down to the nubs. Like…until my fingers hurt. My anxiety is so high, that’s always been one of my outlets. Apparently it’s genetic. People who have this gene are more likely to develop Body-Focused Repetitive Behavior disorder (or BFRBs) like nail-biting, hair-pulling, face-picking…stuff like that. Anyway, that’s what I’ve got. So my nails were always gross-looking! And I knew I had to fix that if I was going to be holding food up in front of the castle for pictures LOL! Krampus cookie at Gideon’s Bakehouse So I started to get manicures to help myself stop nail-biting. And it worked! Even today, the only way I can stop myself from biting my nails is to have a heavy-duty manicure where those nails are so thick you’d break your teeth if you tried to bite them! Do I like to get manicures? Nope. It’s just a hassle and a waste of time as far as I’m concerned. But, for me, it’s basically a medication to help myself stop what has proven to be a harmful practice. Butter Pecan Praline Sundae So there you have it! The “DFB Manicure” had nothing at all to do with brand and had everything to do with my weird brain and genetics. We’ve never (and still don’t) require our reporters to have beautiful nails…or even nice nails. We don’t really care about their nails at all. We just want great reporters! But the legacy still remains of the “DFB nails.” So that’s a fun little piece of lore for you! Thanks for following us here at DFB! 25. Are you planning a trip to Disneyland? Disneyland We’re sure you’ve been planning to eat some of that infamous Disneyland food that we always go on about (yes, that food is AMAZING). Maybe you’ve made a list of snacks you want to try from corn dogs to churros (SO many churros) to Mickey beignets. Well, we have some bad news about some food in Disneyland: we’ve seen some price increases across the board for a lot of Disneyland restaurants and snacks. Disneyland Popcorn at Kat Saka’s Kettle in Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has also increased. Both the Crait Butter Popped Grains and Kublag Spiced Savory Popped Grains have increased from $7.29 to $7.59. Kat Saka’s Kettle popcorn Have you been wanting to try that delicious Garlic Cheesy Pretzel Bread from Maurice’s Treats? Well, it’s going to cost you more now. It went up from $7.49 to $7.99. Other food and beverages at Maurice’s have also gone up in price. Cheesy Garlic Pretzel Bread We also saw some price increases at Jolly Holiday Bakery. If you’re a fan of the Jolly Holiday Combo (that amazing Toasted Cheese Sandwich with Tomato Basil Soup), it’s gone up from $13.99 to $14.49. Ultimate comfort food: toasted cheese sandwich and tomato soup! One of our favorite items there, the Matterhorn Macaroon went up from $4.99 to $5.29. You’ll also pay more for several of the other bakery items there. Matterhorn Macaroon Other Disneyland restaurants that saw increases include (and note this is not an exhaustive list): Refreshment Corner, Tiana’s Palace, and Rancho del Zocalo Restaurante. Disney California Adventure That’s right, we’ve seen price increases pretty much across the board, ranging from increases as little as 25 cents up to $2 increases. That includes one of the most popular snacks at Disney California Adventure, Jack Jack Cookie Num Nums, which went from $8 to $8.25. Cookie Num Nums in Disney California Adventure! We also saw price increases at Pym Test Kitchen in Avengers Campus. The Quantum Pretzel (which we LOVE) increased from $12.99 to $13.99, while the Reactor Melt increased from $14.69 to $14.99. Quantum Pretzel Again, almost every restaurant in Disney California Adventure saw some price increases, including Clarabelle’s Hand Scooped Ice Cream, Fillmore’s Taste-In, Hollywood Lounge, Paradise Grill, and Schmoozies. We’ve also seen a few price increases happening at restaurants in Downtown Disney, including Ballast Point. So keep that in mind if you’ll be visiting Disneyland soon. You might need to budget a little extra for food. Don’t forget, though: if you’re an Anaheim resident, you can get Disneyland tickets for just $69. Stay tuned to DFB for more.
