A Purple Martin’s Journey to Disney Every year, across Walt Disney World, a purple iridescence paints the sky and the air is filled with loud, musical chirps that create a beautiful melody and make the perfect ambiance for a sweet spring Disney day. Well, that’s just how we at Disney refer to purple martin nesting season. Purple martins are a tiny bird species, native to the Brazilian Amazon who travel over 3,000 miles in search of warmer weather and land upon Walt Disney World for their yearly nesting season, a destination they’ve frequented since 1998. Every January, our conservation team eagerly awaits the start of purple martin migration season after spending the Fall months ramping up efforts to welcome back the flock. The Perfect Bird House Have you ever been at EPCOT or a resort hotel across Walt Disney World and spotted a white structure that looks like a cartoon tree? Those are known as colony sites and are actually a collection of bird houses, perfectly designed for purple martins to lay eggs and raise their nestlings (which hatch 15 days after eggs are laid). Throughout the season, you can spot male and female purple martins entering their homes to care for their young. While moms are responsible for incubating eggs and brooding, both parents are often seen feeding their hatchlings and even cleaning their bird house, so it remains a space fit for a baby bird. Hundreds of hours go into preparing the perfect nesting compartments so birds visiting have a safe and comfortable place to lay eggs and raise hatchlings. Some might even say their Walt Disney World nesting houses are the swankiest bird houses on the block, which is likely why some purple martins have been spotted back at Disney, year after year. Cast Members Make the Difference During nesting season, Disney conservationists take this as an opportunity to learn more about this bird species to help aid protection and conservation efforts in the wild. With the help of cast members throughout Walt Disney World, Disney is able to study each family of birds and band many of them with unique leg bands that provide valuable information and data. This allows cast members to monitor their bird houses for the arrival of banded birds, identify band numbers to spot returning birds and monitor behavior to determine where banded birds are nesting. This all leads up to a special annual event, the Purple Martin Palooza, where Disney conservationists come together to band the next generation of birds and release them back into the wild so they can successfully make their trip back to the Brazilian Amazon. Migratory bird species around the world are threatened by loss of stopover habitat where they can find food and clean water. This is why it’s critical that Walt Disney World remains a long-term nesting colony for purple martins. The Walt Disney Company is committed to saving wildlife and protecting the magic of nature together as a global community. Since 1995, the Disney Conservation Fund* (DCF) has supported migratory bird conservation efforts by protecting habitats, investing in long-term research and supporting the education of communities that live in and near migratory bird habitats. In addition, support from the DCF is helping nonprofit organizations study and protect purple martins from Brazil to Florida. Since the fund was created 30 years ago, it has supported more than 100 nonprofit organizations working to protect more than 250 species of birds in more than 80 countries, including the purple martin. This project is a great example of Disney Planet Possible – putting possibility into practice by doing our part to conserve natural resources, care for wildlife and their habitats, use and waste less, and create stories that inspire action. We’ve been there many times — you’re leaving the Disney World park after a long day, and suddenly you realize you’re hungry. Chicken Big Mac box Thankfully, there’s a McDonald’s right on Disney World property, located near the All-Star Resorts and Animal Kingdom! Not to mention that for people to travel far to get to Disney World, they often pass plenty of McDonald’s, they may stop at one while driving, or may choose to grab something at one in the airport before their flight. We keep up with all the latest McDonald’s news just for that reason, which is why you NEED to know that two new menu items are on the way! If you’ve ever wondered about getting Chicken Strips instead of Chicken Nuggets at the restaurant, we’ve got great news! McDonald’s has just announced 3-piece and 4-piece McCrispy Strips coming to the menu on May 5th! ©McDonald’s But that’s not all — a new sauce is dropping on the same day as well. The new Creamy Chili McCrispy Strip Dip is described as “Savory, slightly tangy, sweet with a hint of chili pepper heat and a nutty toasted sesame finish.” Despite the name, you’ll be able to get this sauce with other menu items as well, not just with the chicken strips. ©McDonald’s Both of these items will be available at most McDonald’s locations in the United States beginning on May 5th, and yes, that includes the location on Disney World property as well! At this time, these are being called permanent items, so we’re hoping that they truly will be around for the foreseeable future. More Recent McDonald's News! Disney World is testing a brand-new baggage perk at Disney World, BUT it’s exclusive to guests staying at certain hotels. All-Star Sports Disney recently surprise-launched a new program that allows guests departing their Disney hotel for Orlando International Airport (MCO) to drop off baggage they wish to check with the hotel’s Luggage Assistance desk. The luggage will then be delivered directly to their flight, allowing guests to bypass baggage lines at the airport. According to Disney, eligible guests who use the service can enact the following steps: “At the beginning of your stay, check-in at your Disney Value Resort hotel and call or visit Luggage Assistance to take advantage of this service. For a smoother experience, leave your inbound Southwest Airlines tags on your bags.” “The day before your departure, check-in for your Southwest Airlines flight online.” “Drop off your bags at Luggage Assistance in the Resort hotel lobby area by the required drop off time. Please be aware that you will need to provide a valid form of photo identification in order to drop off your bags. You can also call Luggage Assistance from your in-room telephone to ask for help with your bags.” “Head to the airport, skip the check-in line, enjoy your flight and pick up your bags at baggage claim when you arrive at your destination.” They further advise that guests departing MCO before 1:00 PM drop their bags off by 1:00 AM the night before their flight, and “at least 4 hours before departure or no later than 1:00 PM – – whichever comes first” when departing at or after 1:00 PM. Luggage Assistance is available to receive luggage any time from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 1:00 AM daily. The luggage assistance desk! According to Disney, this “pilot service is available at Disney Value Resort hotels for Guests with Southwest Airlines flights departing from Orlando International Airport (MCO).” Yes, you read that correctly: Currently, the service is ONLY available to guests of Disney World’s Value-Tier Hotels: Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort Disney’s All-Star Music Resort Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort Disney’s Art of Animation Resort Disney’s Pop Century Resort Furthermore, guests must be CHECKING OUT and DEPARTING for MCO from one of these hotels, meaning that guests who begin their stay at a Value Resort but change to a Moderate or Deluxe for a later portion of their trip are NOT eligible. Pop Century Disney’s latest baggage perk is only available to guests staying at Value tier resorts… for now. Stay tuned to DFB for more on the resort’s latest service offerings. Dining at Disney World can be overwhelming because you’ve got a TON of options. Want something quick and easy? You’ve got it. Something middle of the road and comforting? Yep, that too. And if you’re looking for something upscale and luxurious, you can find that as well. Italy Pavilion in EPCOT We recently stopped by the Italy Pavilion at EPCOT to check out some new menu items available at a few different spots there, and now we’re bringing you our FULL review. Is it worth a stop on your next trip to the Most Magical Place on Earth? Find out here! We’re headed to the Italy Pavilion to sample some new and old favorites from the restaurants located here, including Via Napoli, Tutto Italia, Gelateria Toscana, and the Primavera Kitchen booth at the EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival. Our first stop was Primavery Kitchen — the Flower & Garden booth from this pavilion. We tried the Mezzalune Croccanti e Polpette: Crispy Half-Moon Breaded Mozzarella Ravioli, Beef and Pork Meatballs, Pomodoro Sauce, and Parmesan. It was really delicious. The ravioli itself was nice and soft, and the outside was crispy and a little bit chewy, and then the meatball was rich, meaty, and very well seasoned, with a little bit of garlic to it. So all in all, this was a really good dish. It was a decent portion and something we would actually get again. Mezzalune Croccanti e Polpette From Via Napoli, we had the Prosciutto e Melone pizza that’s been on their menu since the beginning. It’s one of their most popular pizzas, and it has prosciutto, arugula, and cantaloupe on it. The cantaloupe was bright and fruity, and then the prosciutto had that deep meatiness to it and a little bit of salt. And then you have the earthy brightness from that arugula. They all just pair really well together. It’s a little bit hard to eat because the prosciutto and the cantaloupe are in gigantic slices on this pizza. So you really have to bite and kind of like rip each slice of the pizza, which is a little bit annoying if you’re used to very American-style pizza, but the crust was delightful, light, and fluffy. Prosciutto e Melone pizza Then we also had the Mozzarella Caprese salad appetizer, which is tomato slices with fresh mozzarella and olive oil on top, and this was very bright, very fresh. Both the cheese and the tomato were incredibly fresh, and we could slice through them with my knife like butter. Very delicious, very simple overall, and if you want some very classic Italian eats, this might be a good choice for you during your visit. Caprese Salad The other drink we tried was the Dolce Vita. This one also had raspberry syrup in it, but it was very strong on the soda water. We could see someone enjoying this on a really hot day. Dolce Vita We sampled two different drinks available at Via Napoli. The Frozen Volcano was a non-alcoholic drink, and it’s essentially like a frozen Piña Colada with a little raspberry syrup in it. If you’ve ever had a Piña CoLAVA at Disney World, it was kind of like that without the booze! It was sweet, but not too sweet, and very fruity. Kids would probably love this because when you stir it and mix it together, it kind of bubbles up like a volcano, which we thought was really neat. Frozen Volcano We also learned about a new and exclusive beer only available at Tutto Gusto and Tutto Italia — the Sorsi d’Oro Italian Pilsner. We didn’t sample this one, but it’s described as a light pilsner. Sorsi d’Oro Italian Pilsner At Tutto Italia, we started with a Shrimp Risotto, which is not part of their summer prix fixe menu (more on that later!). This was just something that they let us sample, and our major complaint was that the shrimp annoyingly had the tail on. This is a peeve of ours, especially when you stick the shrimp in something. We didn’t want to pull the shrimp out of the risotto and peel the tail off of it. But the shrimp was large, very juicy, had a little bit of bite to it when you bit in, like it kind of popped in your mouth. It was just a pretty decent piece of gigantic shrimp with the tail still on. The risotto itself had some cucumber in it and some pesto. It was earthy, it was creamy. It was bright and fresh. It kind of tasted like the color green, and it was delicious. We would eat a bowl of this risotto by itself, very, very good risotto. Shrimp Risotto In some seriously exciting news, Tutto Italia is introducing a prix fixe menu for the summer! It will debut sometime in May or June and will last through August. This is a summer menu that they are doing for lunch only, and it is $29 for three courses, which is a pretty great deal. Now, the platings are slightly smaller than the regular platings at the restaurant, but we were able to see the sizes of all the offerings, and they still look quite substantial! New Prix Fixe menu For our appetizer, we tried the Caesar Salad, and our reporter said that this was one of the best Caesar salads she’d ever had in her life. They give you so much dressing. The Parmesan cheese is in shaved slices on top, which was really good — it was creamy and nutty, and the lettuce was nice and crunchy and crisp and fresh, and then you’ve got little croutons throughout. They were a little bit hard, but we were still able to stab them with our fork, so this was a winner for us. Also available with the prix fixe is a Caprese Salad. This version was a slice of mozzarella, olive oil, and then tiny little tomatoes on top. So it was a bit different. The tomatoes are definitely more kind of in your face because you’re like biting an actual half of a tomato, but the cheese, once again, was soft and cheesy. We would choose the Caesar Salad over this one, though! We also sampled some of the pastas from the prix fixe menu. The Penne Garibaldi was delicious. The Garibaldi sauce is apparently the chef’s favorite sauce because it has several different elements — a tomato base, but it’s also got some onion in there, and it was very rich, very flavorful, with lots of depth to this. It didn’t just feel like you were eating penne with tomato sauce. It was kind of like a level up from that. Then we had the Fettuccine Alfredo, which was so, so creamy, and the noodles were soft. Not al dente, definitely soft noodles on this, but it was not as heavy as other fettuccine alfredos that we’ve had, and we really appreciated that. It wasn’t too much cream or too much cheese. It was just, it was light. It was a nice amount of creaminess that wasn’t too overwhelming. Some of the Prix Fixe items Over at Gelateria Toscana, we tried the Caffe Shakerato, which is an Italian-style shaken coffee — and it’s essentially an espresso martini without the martini. So instead of the alcohol, they put vanilla gelato in it. The gelato does not really tone down the overall coffee flavor of the drink, so it’s very coffee-forward. We would recommend this, maybe more for somebody who is a coffee lover and who wants something iced and chilly for a hot day. Caffe Shakerato We tried the Iced Americano, which they make with espresso, 2% milk, water, and newly on the menu at this location — you can now get your coffee with different flavored syrups, so we tried the hazelnut. It was definitely an iced Americano — strong, in your face with the coffee flavor and slightly sweet from the hazelnut. Iced Americano Make sure you stop by the Italy Pavilion’s dining spots, including Via Napoli, Tutto Italia, Gelateria Toscana, and the Primavera Kitchen booth to see what’s new! Ticket sales for Epic Universe theme park and related hotel bookings are “a little ahead of our expectations,” Comcast Corp. President Mike Cavanagh said during the company’s quarterly earnings call this week. The resort is well-positioned, officials said, despite reports of international travel anxiety. Comcast is the parent company of Universal Orlando, which is adding Epic to its lineup. The theme park’s grand opening is set for May 22. “We have seen strong demand since launching Epic ticket sales in the fourth quarter of 2024, and the most recent reaction to early previews has been nothing short of phenomenal,” Cavanagh said. Comcast’s theme park revenue was down 5.2% for the first quarter from a year earlier, and operating expenses were up 7.5%. In the ramp-up to Epic’s opening there were about $100 million in incremental costs, as anticipated, Chief Financial Officer Jason Armstrong said. “Looking past these pre-opening costs, underlying results in the quarter indicated stable trends in Orlando, giving us confidence that we are entering the Epic launch from a position of strength,” Armstrong said. A decline in international travel and airplane bookings hasn’t been mirrored in the company’s data for travel plans to theme parks, Cavanagh said. “What we’re seeing continues to be tracking well,” he said. “Our domestic parks do draw a lot of folks from the U.S. and a lot of folks from markets in the South, in the case of Florida, that are not necessarily hopping on planes to get there,” Cavanagh said. “So there may be a delayed effect between what the airlines are starting to report on and what we see. But like I said, no real sign of that in our business as we sit here now.” Universal Studios Hollywood theme park and the Southern California tourism industry are rebounding from the area’s wildfires, he said. “I think the whole market is continuing to see people staying away a little bit more than I think the leadership in L.A. broadly or us as a park owner in that market would like it to be,” Cavanagh said. The company’s parks in Japan and China remain stable, he said. The bulk of the earnings call dealt with other aspects of Comcast’s business, such as studios, broadband and Peacock streaming service. There were references to other businesses in its Content & Experiences sector, including the kids park under construction in Texas, Universal Horror Unleashed, a year-round horror experience set to open in Las Vegas in August and the decision to build a theme park in England. Overall revenue for the first quarter was $29.9 billion, a decrease of 0.6%. Revenue for Content & Experiences was $10.5 billion, an increase of 0.8%. Email me at dbevil@orlandosentinel.com. Everyone’s been talking so much about Epic Universe, you probably haven’t noticed this new souvenir at Universal Orlando! Universal We stopped by Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure and noticed a NEW refillable mug design available for purchase NOW! That’s right, there’s a brand-new refillable mug available at Universal Orlando Resort! We’ve now spotted this new design all over the place at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. The theme of the mug is Coca-Cola, which just makes sense considering you can refill these cups at Coke-branded Freestyle machines throughout the parks and City Walk. New Universal mug There are a couple of purchase options available when you go to buy the mug! You can buy one mug for $18.99. If you want to buy more cups, the price goes down. Two refillable mugs would bring the price down to $16.99 each. If you want three to six refillable mugs, it’s $14.99 each. There’s also the option to add an extra day for $11.99. Coca-Cola Freestyle machine Fans prefer Universal refillable mugs to Disney for a few reasons. The biggest one after price is that you can refill them inside the parks — which we’ve only seen as a temporary option at one Disney World park. Coca-Cola Freestyle Machines You’ll be able to refill the souvenir cups at any Coca-Cola Freestyle machine in any of Universal’s theme parks. Something people don’t often know about is that you can also get an ICEE frozen beverage with the refillable mug! Who doesn’t love a good slushy on a hot Florida day? One thing to note is that the cups purchased in the parks are NOT valid at Universal Orlando’s hotels. Freestyle Machine at Epic Here’s a little secret — we found a Coke Freestyle Machine at Epic Universe that offered a drink that you won’t find anywhere else. It’s called the “Celestial Spritz” and is available at the Oak and Star Tavern in Celestial Park! So bring your new mug there, and give it a try. Coca Cola Freestyle Machine Who doesn’t love a refillable soda mug? The new design looks clean, and is obviously fitting for the purpose of the mug is for. We’ll have to go back over and grab it! A BRAND-NEW restaurant is coming to Disney World later this year. Swan and Dolphin Hotel In the spring of 2025, Disney confirmed that the Dolphin Resort’s Shula’s Steakhouse – – named for famous Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula – – would be closing in June to make way for a new dining experience: Bourbon Steak. Celebrity chef Michael Mina launched Bourbon Steak as “a tribute to the classic American steakhouse” nearly 20 years ago. Currently, there are locations in Del Ray Beach, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York, Orange County, Scottsdale, and Washington D.C. The restaurant’s menu includes “prime cuts of beef, fresh seafood, and an extensive selection of wines and spirits, including rare and vintage bourbon selections,” made with locally sourced ingredients. The cut of the steak! From an atmospheric standpoint, the restaurant’s aim is to emerge diners in an “atmosphere of sophistication and warmth” with “elegant yet comfortable decor” that creates the “ideal backdrop for a memorable evening, whether (they’re) celebrating a special occasion or simply indulging in the pleasures of a fine meal.” Recently, we paid a visit to the Orange County, California, location in order to get a feel for Bourbon Steak prior to its Disney World opening, and we saw both the food offerings and the decor firsthand. Bourbon Steak, Orange County Located at the Waldorf Astoria in Dana Point, California, the restaurant had an upscale, oceanfront vibe, featuring decor heavy on open spaces… The bar! … and views of the Pacific Ocean. Bourbon Steak in Orange County While the new Dolphin location likely won’t mimic the decor exactly, we’d imagine it will fall into a similar luxury, elegant design aesthetic. The wine! From a menu standpoint, judging by the menus offered at other locations, including Miami and Del Ray Beach, we’d imagine the Orlando outpost will feature similar offerings – – including the French Fry Flight – – with some Floridan twists. The fries! Bourbon Steak is coming to Walt Disney World’s Dolphin hotel and is replacing Shula’s later this year. Stay tuned to DFB for more on this new restaurant. BIG things are happening in Disney World, which means we’re getting ready for a lot of change. Hollywood Studios We’re already seeing big changes in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, as parts of DinoLand U.S.A. have closed to start making way for Pueblo Esperanza, a Tropical Americas-themed land. Magic Kingdom will soon be closing Tom Sawyer Island and Rivers of America to make way for a new Cars expansion in Frontierland. In Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Muppets Courtyard will be closing soon to make way for a new Monsters, Inc. land. That means that everything IN Muppets Courtyard will also close, including one iconic restaurant. The first thing set to close in Muppets Courtyard is Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano, which we’ve previously said is sorta’ like Hollywood Studios’ version of Olive Garden. The restaurant will be closing on May 11th, meaning your last chance to dine here will be on May 10th. Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano Mama Melrose’s will be the first of closures in Muppets Courtyard. Muppet*Vision 3D and PizzeRizzo will close on June 7th, while all of Muppets Courtyard will be closed off with construction walls on June 8th. Yep, it’s really happening, and we’ll have to say goodbye to the Muppets in Hollywood Studios SOON. Muppet*Vision 3D The new Monsters, Inc. land will bring a NEW ride to Hollywood Studios, which will be based on the door chase sequence in the film. It will also be the first suspended roller coaster in Disney World. ©Disney Disney has not yet revealed an opening date for the new land, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for updates, so stay tuned to DFB for more. It’s the dawn of a new day for theme parks. With technology advancing and parks expanding, it’s no wonder many people are so interested in themed entertainment. ©Disney Universal’s brand-new theme park, Epic Universe, is about to open and is already getting rave reviews, and the company has also announced plans to build new theme parks in the United Kingdom and Frisco, Texas. But, Frisco isn’t the only city in Texas that might be getting a new theme park… According to KTRK, a new study from the University of Houston revealed what sort of entertainment options residents want, and experts say it could entice investors to make it happen. In the past, Houston has had entertainment options like Astroworld, plus professional sports like the WNBA and hockey. Yay sports! But, the new survey shows that Houston residents want those entertainment options to come back. It shows 57% want an NHL team, 60% want a Houston WNBA team, and the most popular response was that people wanted a theme park. “Back when I was younger, we had Astroworld,” Miguel Garcia said. “Now that my kids are growing, I would like to see the same thing.” via Google “A large proportion, more than half, say they would go once a year,” Mark Jones, Rice University Baker Institute Fellow in Political Science, explained. “If you go down to parents with children under the age of 18, 40% said they would go twice a year, if not more.” International Theme Park Services founder Dennis Spiegel says he’s not surprised by these results — and that they may cause investors to look a bit closer at Houston as a theme park destination. He says he knows of groups eyeing Houston right now. ©Universal | Kids Resort “If you’re going to build one, you want to put it in the market that can facilitate and serve it, and Houston is one of those remaining markets,” Speigel said. Of course, nothing has officially been planned or announced as of yet — but it does bode well for the theme park industry and its growth. We’ve also previously reported that Universal was building a kids-oriented theme park in Frisco, Texas, so it sounds like Texas might be making waves when it comes to new theme park entertainment. ©Universal | UK Theme Park In the meantime, we’ll be on the lookout for more updates about potential new theme parks in Texas and beyond. Magic Kingdom is a park full of whimsy, iconic attractions, and hundreds of souvenirs that are so tempting. But honestly, you might regret buying some of them almost immediately. Let’s go shopping! We’re in the parks almost every single day, and we’ve both seen people buy things they’ve regretted immediately and also bought things ourselves that we wish we had never done. We asked our team for some stories of the times they made an impulse purchase they shook their heads at later, so learn from our mistakes — don’t do this on your trip! DISCLOSURE: This post may contain affiliate links, meaning when you click the links and make a purchase, we receive a commission. First up on the list may surprise you, but we’ve had MANY members of our team regret buying a Poncho from the parks, both when it did end up raining, but especially when it didn’t. Beware the plastic poncho!! Here’s the thing: Disney World ponchos aren’t very great quality. Will they get the job done? Sure, in a way, but they’re also very likely to rip and tear, and then you just spent all this money on something you can’t reuse. Not to mention that many people feel suffocated in them on hot, humid days in the parks (which, let’s be honest, is a large part of the year). Instead, we recommend buying a poncho online or at a store back home before your trip! They’re not the greatest Our favorite poncho to take to the parks are the FROGG TOGG ponchos. They have a little bag that will carry your wet poncho and they are super good quality. On top of that, they are way cheaper than the ones in the parks! Frogg Toggs Poncho Second, we have something that many people love, but when you think about it, they’re just not practical — BALLOONS! Balloons can be found in 3/4 Disney World parks, plus Disney Springs, but you’ll never find them in Animal Kingdom as they can be a danger to the animals’ health. Disney World Balloons These are adorable, especially with all their different designs, but if you’re trying to carry it around all day and you don’t have a stroller to tie it to (and even if you do, sometimes they get VERY annoying to deal with), you’re going to have nowhere to put it on rides, and that’s just a disaster. If you’re going to grab one, we recommend buying it at the end of the day and then keeping it in your hotel room for the duration of your trip. Balloons on Main Street If you do buy a balloon, just know that you can ask for it to be deflated at the Disney Store at MCO so you can take it home with you! Then you can get it inflated again once you are home. Next up, face paint is super cute and can be something fun to do for kids (and kids at heart!) but there’s one time when we really think it’s far from worth it — on a hot day. Rock Your Face Not only will you be sweating a ton, but you should ALSO be reapplying your sunscreen, and that will 100% smudge all that face paint. If you keep your receipt, you can get free touch-ups all day, but let’s be honest — on a hot day, you’re not going to want to return to a face paint stand three times throughout a day that’s full of other activities. Face Paint in EPCOT This one may shock you, but a few of our team members feel strongly that eating lunch or dinner in Magic Kingdom is something they regret every time! Why, you may ask? Well, you’re steps away from the Monorail, which in turn can take you to three resorts that have way better dining experiences. Disney’s Contemporary Resort You’ve got tons of quick service and table service restaurants available at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, AND Disney’s Contemporary Resort, and our whole team is in agreement that essentially any option at any of those three is a better choice than dining somewhere in Magic Kingdom. So if you’re looking for a meal that will really impress you, this is where to go! Grand Floridian Resort Finally, this goes for all Disney World parks, but buying a Bottled Water is something we’ve only done a handful of times and regret it no matter what. Staying hydrated is extremely important, but there are also FREE cups of water you can get at each quick service location, and that’s what we recommend using to keep yourself good throughout the day. Bring a reusable water bottle from home, and boom, you’re golden! Some of this water can taste a bit yucky, so we like to use the water bottle refill stations located around the parks. We have found that the water from those locations tends to taste a bit better! Did someone say free water? We’re always here to help you make sure you have the best trip possible, so stay tuned to DFB for all the latest tips and tricks! Epic Universe, Universal Orlando’s newest theme park, is opening in less than a month (!!!), and we’ve been collecting all the details for you so you can have the most epic day ever (pun intended). Epic Universe Universal just dropped a MAJOR detail we’ve been anxiously awaiting for the first day of opening — and beyond! The park hours for Epic Universe have been released and will operate from 9 AM to 9 PM on May 22nd, opening day. That’s twelve whole hours of incredible fun. Ice Dragon at Isle of Berk For the entire month of May, Epic will be open from 9 AM to 9 PM. The park hasn’t revealed what the hours will look like for the rest of the year, but this gives us a pretty good idea of what Universal is planning. Celestial Park Early Park Admission for those staying at a Universal hotel will get you into the park at 8 AM, but not on opening day, May 22nd. No Early Park Admission will be available that day according to the calendar, but it will be available for the rest of the month. Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry Not every attraction will be available during Early Park Entry, but Epic has some fun rides to kick off your morning, including: Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge Yoshi’s Adventure Mine-Cart Maddness Stardust Racers You’ll want to head straight to Super Nintendo World to make the most of your morning! This is a great way to grab a few extra rides before they’re open to the general public. Super Nintendo World Everyone else will have to wait a little longer, but during annual passholder previews, guests are let into the park after security and ticket checks, to do some shopping at the main stores and queue up in front of your dream portal. This might change when the park is officially open, so make sure to stay up to date with Disney Food Blog, where we’ll be there on opening day to provide you with all the details you need. Dark Universe Portal We know which portal we’ll be heading to soon, but tell us in the comments which one you’ll start your morning with. Here at DFB, we know a thing or two about Disney World. And, I personally happen to know a thing or two about drinking at EPCOT. In fact, it’s one of my favorite things to do. EPCOT Some might consider me the resident expert on imbibing here at DFB (okay, or maybe I’m just the loudest about it), which is why I feel particularly qualified to tell you about the latest problem plaguing EPCOT — barflies. One World Showcase pavilion tends to attract them more than most, and we need to talk about it. Few World Showcase spots are as essential to Drinking Around the World as the Rose & Crown Pub in the United Kingdom Pavilion. While the Rose & Crown Dining Room features seated table service with your typical British fare, the Pub is home to iconic beers, flights, cocktails, whiskies, and a full bar. I mean, who wouldn’t want to stop for a pint at the pub when Drinking Around the World in EPCOT? Rose and Crown Pub The problem is that this place is SO popular that you’ll often see a mob of people crowded out front, waiting to get in for a drink — the barflies. And, if you see me in this group — no, you didn’t. In all seriousness, though, it can get a little chaotic trying to grab a drink from Rose & Crown on particularly crowded days. Rarely, Disney will set up stanchions out front to create an orderly line, but once you step through those doors — BAM! It’s like you’ve stepped into a crowded British pub. Don’t expect a line; expect to have to elbow your way up to the bar like you’re in college again. It gets crowded in here! This can create quite a crowd of folks that get in the way of people trying to pass by the pub and to the rest of the park, causing a bit of a backup. It all just adds to the experience, though! But, if you don’t want to fight your way through the crowd for a drink, you can find a selection of the same items (not all of them, though) at the Rose & Crown Beer Cart located just out front and to the left of the Pub. Beer Cart And, if you’re heading to Disney World anytime soon, keep in mind that the Rose & Crown Pub is currently undergoing a multi-month refurbishment, so you won’t get to experience the typical barfly problem — or the pub itself. Instead, a temporary bar has been set up along the World Showcase Lagoon. A reopening date has not been announced for the pub, but we’ll keep an eye out! Cheers! We’ll be on the lookout for more updates you need to know from Disney World. In the meantime, make sure you stay tuned to the Disney Food Blog for the latest Disney news! We have been to Universal Orlando’s new theme park Epic Universe and we LOVED IT. Okay, so it does live up to the Epic name, but what about the food? Because you KNOW we’re all about the food. Epic Universe We recently stopped by Pizza Moon in Celestial Park to check out the vibes, as well as the food, so come with us while we dine over the (pizza) moon. Atmosphere Pizza Moon is set in an early 1990s Victorian theater that has been turned into an eatery. It’s located in Celestial Park (hence the whole celestial name). Pizza Moon As you can see, the theme on the outside is a little quirky, as is the inside. You’ve got cardboard cutout-like scene decorations like you might find in an old Victorian theater. Cool theming Be sure to take a look around because this really is a unique dining joint. We love it But enough about the restaurant — what’s on the menu here?! Menu As you may have guessed, Pizza Moon is all about PIZZA. And you’ll find all kinds of interesting pizza concoctions here inspired by space. Eats First up, we grabbed the Space Cowboy for $18.99, made with BBQ sauce, rotisserie chicken, pickled red onion, Castelvetrano olives, and BBQ potato chips. Yes, potato chips on a pizza, and WHY DIDN’T WE THINK OF THAT? But the thing here is that this pizza is just trying maybe a little too hard. We appreciate the effort to do something unique, but this is VERY barbecue. We also thought the pickled red onion added an additional flavor, but it didn’t cut through all that sweet barbecue flavor, which was overwhelming at times. Space Cowboy The pizza crust has a nice crust with a char on the bottom of it. The potato chips add a fun crunch, but at this point, it’s just SO much MORE barbecue flavor. So we’re torn on this pizza, but at the same time, we ate the whole thing…and then wondered why. We also had the Brownie Eclipse for $11.99. It’s a warm gooey brownie with Nutella, toasted marshmallows, and crushed OREO. If you have a sweet tooth, this might be the PERFECT snack for you. It’s got that whole half-baked brownie texture with the ooey gooey middle. Brownie Eclipse But y’all, this brownie is RICH, so you might want to share (or not). The flavors work great together, though, and well, it’s a chocolate lovers dream. Nosh or Not Shoot for the Pizza Moon if… You want to try something different. This is pizza, but with a twist, and we appreciate that Pizza Moon is being adventurous with throwing ingredients together. You want a quick meal. This is a quick service dining spot, so you’ll be fed pretty quickly. You have a sweet tooth. Seriously, if you love sweets, the Brownie Eclipse alone is worth stopping by. Stay away from the Pizza Moon if… You have picky eaters. Although this is pizza, it is pizza that’s been reimagined in some unique ways that picky eaters might not appreciate. You want a table service dining experience. This is a quick service dining spot so you’re not going to get the same kind of service you would at a table service restaurant. You don’t like or want pizza. Although the pizza here is unique, it’s still served on a pizza crust. Overall We’re torn about the Space Cowboy pizza we had here, but we think barbecue lovers might just devour it. The dessert, though, was fantastic, and we’d come back again just for that. There are a variety of unique pizzas to choose from, so this is definitely theme park fare taken up a notch, and we appreciate that. In the meantime, we’ll be on the lookout for more restaurant updates from Disney World and beyond. Make sure you stay tuned to the Disney Food Blog for the latest Disney news and more! Disney versus Universal — it’s been a hot debate for years and continues to be a hot debate today, especially with Epic Universe joining the lineup. Universal Studios Despite the projected earnings for Epic Universe in its first year being over one billion dollars, the rest of Universal’s theme park revenue doesn’t seem to be doing so hot. NBCUniversal recently held its first-quarter earnings call, and revenue for the parks was down. Comcast released its report on NBCUniversal’s first-quarter financial results, and according to the numbers, theme park revenue was down 5% to around $1.88 billion. The report attributed this to lower visitor attendance due to the Los Angeles wildfires. Universal Studios Hollywood Both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal CityWalk closed during the January wildfires that devastated California, which most likely had an impact on the overall losses Universal saw in the theme park division during the first quarter. In addition to these losses, Comcast reported higher operating expenses this quarter, which included “around $100 million of pre-opening costs for Epic Universe ahead of the scheduled opening in May 2025.” It’s certainly no secret that Universal spared no expense to bring Epic Universe to life. Universal Studios Hollywood In a press release, Comcast stated, “Theme Parks remain on an incredible growth trajectory… We could not be more excited for the grand opening of Epic Universe in Orlando next month and our plans to bring a new world-class theme park to the UK.” Epic Universe Universal recently announced plans to bring a theme park to Bedford, UK, which is expected to open in 2031. While nothing has been confirmed, rumors have suggested the park could have lands featuring the Lord of the Rings, Paddington, and the James Bond franchise. ©Universal We’ll be on the lookout for more updates from Universal. In the meantime, stay tuned to the Disney Food Blog for the latest theme park news and more!
