Woo-hoo! We were SO excited to hear that the California Adventure Food and Wine Festival was coming out of hiatus this year. And I’m thrilled to report that it’s AWESOME! Yep — the festival, which runs in Disney California Adventure in Disneyland Resort on weekends through May 1, opened for business yesterday. And DFB was there to explore! Food and Wine Festival Signage Yesterday, we mostly explored the brand new food booths that are debuting at the festival for the first time. Those of you familiar with the Epcot Food and Wine Festival in Walt Disney World will know the set-up. Small booths featuring several tapas-sized menu items and selected beverages are set up around the festival. This is the first time that the California festival has done this, so we were super excited to check it out. Here’s what we sampled and tasted yesterday! If you want to read more about the rest of the festival and see schedules for the Beverage Seminars and Celebrity Kitchen events, head on over to our main Disney California Adventure Food and Wine Festival Page! DCA Food and Wine Festival Food Booth Reviews Yesterday, we visited several of the booths set up around the festival. No worries, though, we’ll be back soon with reviews of e’erything!!! Let’s take a first look… Gold Rush Booth The Gold Rush booth features some of our favorite dishes at the festival so far! Gold Rush Booth Gold Rush Booth Menu First up, we sampled the Artichoke Chips with Spicy Aioli ($5.00). These were yummy, and were a favorite… Artichoke Chips with Spicy Aioli …until we tried this!!!! The Triple Cheese Mac with Smoked Chicken ($6.000) was off. the. ranch. y’all!!!! Spotlighting fontina, cheddar, and gouda, the cheesiness was spectacular. Triple Cheese Mac with Smoked Chicken Next up from this booth? Dessert! And this one is going to sound crazy…’cause it was. Apple Bacon Whoopie Pie with Maple Cream Cheese Icing and Bacon Brittle ($3.74), anyone? Um…yeah. That was happening. Apple bacon Whoopie Pie We also got the specialty beverage option — the N/A Flower-Field Lemonade ($4.25). This one was pretty, but VERY flowery. Too flowery. And served without ice? Wha? We heard good things from our readers, but it was a no-go for us. Flower Field Lemonade By the Bay Booth We headed on over to the By the Bay Booth for some San Francisco eats next! By the Bay Booth By the Bay Booth Menu I couldn’t wait to tackle that teeny-weeny bread bowl filled with White Cheddar Ale & Bacon Soup ($5.50)! Can you even take this cuteness?? You can sort of see the spoon next to it to get a feel for the size of this thing. Our only complaint was that they needed to scoop out the boule more to make more room for soup!!! White Cheddar Ale and Bacon Soup in a Bread Bowl Next up? The Coconut Tapioca layered with Fresh Mango, Lychee Boba, and Mango Coulis ($4.25). This was refreshing and delicious. Coconut Tapioca The Farm Booth From the Bay over to the Farm! The Farm Booth Menu We had to try that Golden Thai Vegetable Curry ($5.75) first. We loved it. Check out that coconut! The serving here was a little small, though. Golden Thai Vegetable Curry And because we can’t ever say no to Meyer Lemon anything, we had to check out the Meyer Lemon Macaron ($3.50). This one included Blueberry Marmalade, Meyer Lemon Cream, and Blueberry Dust! Yummo! Meyer Lemon Macaron Inside Lemon Macaron — blueberry marmalade! LAStyle Booth LA was next! LA Style Booth Menu We didn’t try this booth yet, but a new friend sampled the Chilled Ahi Poke with Avocado Creme, Wakame Salad, and Sesame Tuille. Chilled Ahi Poke Viva Fresca Booth Over at the Viva Fresca Booth we sampled one of the larger festival menu items. Viva Fresca Menu The Anaheim Chile & Roasted Cauliflower Burrito with Jack Cheese and Avocado-Lime Crema ($5.50) didn’t strike a cord with us. We loved the avocado crema, but the overall flavors weren’t something we need to get again. Chile and Cauliflower Burrito Inside Chile and Cauliflower Burrito Wine Country Booth The Wine Country Booth held some promising goodies! We grabbed a shot of the Zinfandel-Braised Wagyu Beef while we were indulging in dessert! Wagyu Beef But it was this Blackberry Tart with Rosemary Vanilla Bean Creme Fraiche that caught our eye. This was gorgeous (and delicious)! Blackberry Tart Inside Blackberry Tart We’ll be back with full coverage in just a few days of this amazing festival!! Stay tuned! In the meantime, there’s one more thing I wanted to share with you about the festival. Passholder Payment Lanyard DCA has introduced a Passholder Lanyard ($45). This is similar to the lanyards used for the VIP Premium packages at the Epcot Food and Wine Festival. Disneyland Annual Passholders can purchase a lanyard and use the six tabs to purchase items at the booths. (Which items you can purchase with tabs is printed on the lanyard.) Passholder Lanyard Passholder Lanyard Back You can use the lanyard anytime throughout the festival, but once the six tabs are gone, the lanyard can no longer be used for purchasing. Is this a good deal? Um…no. If you look at the pricing on the menus, there aren’t enough things that are priced high enough to make this come out as a money savings (alcohol is excluded). So, if you get this, look at it as a souvenir instead of a money-saving strategy. Overall So far, so good! The festival is a hit as far as we’re concerned. Stay tuned to DFB to see even more coverage! And if you happen to be in Anaheim next weekend, come on out to the Lifestyle Stage in DCA at 11:30 on April 9th to see Heather and AJ present on their favorite Disneyland eats! We’re still months away from the 2016 Epcot Food and Wine Festival but it’s always fun to look back at favorite dishes from the past years! We loved these Shrimp on the Barbie with Pepper Berry Citrus Glaze way back in 2012 and we’ve had a few reader requests for the recipe too! Now it might be a wee bit cold in your neck of the woods for grilling outside but you can use a grill pan on the stove for this recipe and it’ll be just as delicious! Plus, the pepperberry sauce is delightfully spicy so it’s the perfect dish to whip up on a cold winter day! We love exotic-sounding dishes that are actually really easy cook, and this Shrimp on the Barbie recipe is right up our alley! The shrimp would make a great, quick appetizer for a dinner party or a spicy side dish with pasta or steak. Let’s get cooking and throw a few shrimp on the barbie! Shrimp on the Barbie with Pepper Berry Citrus Glaze Ingredients: Australian Spice Seasoning: 3/4 teaspoon ground native pepperberry* or 1/2 tablespoon ground peppercorn 1 teaspoon coarse salt 1 tablespoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano Citrus-Pepperberry Glaze: 2 cups orange juice 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1/4 cup honey 1/4 cup sweet Thai chili sauce 1/2 teaspoon Australian Spice Seasoning 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 tablespoon water Shrimp: 24 extra large shrimp (26/30 count), peeled and deveined 4 wooden skewers 1 tablespoon coarse salt Instructions: For Australian Spice Seasoning: Mix all ingredients and store in a cool, dry place. For Citrus-Pepperberry Glaze: 1. Simmer orange juice and red pepper flakes in medium saucepan over medium heat for 30 minutes or until reduced by half. 2. Add honey, sweet Thai chili, and Australian Spice Seasoning. 3. Mix together cornstarch and water; stir into glaze for about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool. For Shrimp: 1. Preheat gas grill to medium heat. 2. Skewer 6 shrimp on each of four skewers. 3. Season both sides of shrimp with Australian Spice Seasoning. 4. Place shimp on grill and cook 6 to 7 minutes or until desired doneness, turning to grill both sides. 5. Place on serving plates and drizzle with citrus glaze. Serve remaining glaze for dipping. *Cook’s Notes: Pepperberries from Australia are used as a substitute for regular pepper — hot with a crunchy seed cluster at the center. The berries have a sweet taste at the beginning, followed by short-lasting intense heat. Pepperberries may be purchased online and ground using a pepper grinder. Disneyland Resort Horticulture Manager Luis Gomez helps maintain the landscape of the Disneyland Resort. He also creates new landscape designs in partnership with Walt Disney Imagineering to help tell Disney stories in our theme parks. As you may have seen in Shannon’s latest post, 90 percent of our horticulture team works third-shift, beginning at 2 a.m. I joined Luis and his team one recent morning to learn more about the increase of water-savvy plants at the Disneyland Resort. Guests at Walt Disney World Resort will soon be able to book Disney’s newest experience, Sense of Africa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. This 3.5-hour-long breakfast and tour is designed to immerse guests in the richness, culture and history of this African-inspired resort and give a backstage peek at the care, feeding, well-being and social interactions of the resident animals. A typical tour begins with a unique twist on breakfast at Boma—Flavors of Africa, followed by encounters with animals such as okapi, giraffe, ostriches and red river hogs. Sense of Africa is a feast for all five senses. Taste Start your exploration with a breakfast chockfull of exotic (try the pap, a tangy porridge-like dish from South Africa, or turkey bobotíe) and more familiar fare (Mickey waffles, anyone?). But why not be adventurous? There are so many authentic African dishes, from sweet to savory and beyond. Hearing In addition to the snorts, grunts, squeals and bleats you may hear, the animal keeper guides and trainers offer a plethora of information. Did you know that the okapi wasn’t even discovered until 1901? Or that Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge houses the largest collection of authentic African art outside the African continent? Not to mention the Zen-like peacefulness of the savannas in the early hours. Smell A visit to Boma—Flavors of Africa is a buffet of delicious scents and spices. On the savanna, get a whiff of the hay or browse (leaves, tender shoots and other soft vegetation, which is grown on property) the animals dine on each day. Touch Here’s something you don’t always get a chance to do. Select from vegetables, mealworms and other favorites to create enriching treats for a group of young red river hogs. Then watch them playfully discover – and devour – the delights you just hid for them! Sight Of course, everywhere you look—from the authentic garb of the cast members from Africa, and the color palette and textures of Jambo House, to the magnificent, intricate fur and feather patterns and expressive eyes of the animals – there are sights to behold to last a lifetime. Sense of Africa is a real chance to get a behind-the-scenes peek at the magic. The experience will be offered on Tuesday and Saturday mornings, beginning April 9. Reservations are available starting April 5; call 407-WDW-TOUR (939-8687). The cost is $249, and staying at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is not required. Experiences may vary. View the full article

Recently, over 30 new tenants were announced for Town Center, the fourth and final neighborhood set to debut at Disney Springs this summer. While I’m certainly excited about the new venues, I’m just as thrilled that my favorite locations will continue to have a presence on property. Some, like Leather Goods, Portrait Silhouettes and Arribas Brothers have been here for decades. Others don’t have quite as much history but have nonetheless made their mark. Below are a few of my go-to shopping hot spots – what are yours? Arribas Brothers: For something truly unique and special, Arribas Brothers gets my vote. Many of their merchandise is handcrafted by gifted artisans – I love to watch the glass blowers perfecting their wares. As someone who appreciates sparkle, I’m dazzled by the Swarovski crystal creations. Though the replica of Cinderella Castle is a bit out of my budget, there’s plenty that isn’t – one of my most prized work possessions is a crystal filled USB drive from Arribas Brothers that makes me smile every time I use it. Basin: Scent is my favorite sense when I’m pursuing the goods at Basin. Their soaps and bath bombs are always appreciated when I give them as gifts, and I adore their seasonal additions. (Right now, flower soaps are on the shelves, celebrating spring.) I haven’t tried their shampoos or conditioners, but I have friends who swear by them. Curl by Sammy Duvall: If you love the idea of surf, sun and sand, Curl will not disappoint. Brands like Hurley, Roxy, Billabong, Nixon, Oakley, and TOMS are all in stock, alongside my #1 pick: the Disney and Vans Collection of shoes featuring iconic Disney characters and stories like Alice and Wonderland, 101 Dalmatians and Mickey Mouse. Shopping in this store always makes me feel like a true Florida girl. World of Disney: With over 12,000 different items, World of Disney – the largest Disney merchandise store in the world – is a dream-come- true for Disney aficionados. From sparkle Minnie Mouse ears to Stitch plush, Alex and Ani bangles to Star Wars t-shirts, the assortment seems endless. A new layout and enhanced signage makes it easier than ever to navigate the store and find the character items you’re looking for. When Town Center is complete later this summer, we’ll have doubled the number of shopping options for our guests; this mix of old and new ensures that there’s truly something for everyone, making Disney Springs your place to shop! Imagine throwing open your curtains and seeing narrow fjords cutting through tall mountains. Waterfalls cascade down the rocks from icy glaciers perched high above. It’s a magnificent sight to behold, and it’s all yours to savor on the Adventures by Disney Norway vacation. There are more than a thousand fjords in Norway, and with Adventures by Disney you’ll see some of most majestic fjords – sometimes from your own hotel room window! Case in point, this photo taken from my room window in the Geirangerfjord area. It’s truly a view you can’t a-fjord to miss! Making the views even more spectacular is the fact that during the summer months Norway experiences a phenomenon known as the “midnight sun,” meaning that the sun is still visible at midnight (and often well into the wee hours of the morning). With nearly 24 hours worth of stunning fjord views, it’s definitely hard to look away. View the full article

The first-ever Star Wars Half Marathon – The Dark Side will take place at Walt Disney World Resort on April 14-17, 2016. Today, I’m excited to share a first look at some commemorative merchandise created especially for this inaugural event. Participants will find several different programs designed for the various races taking place throughout the weekend. There will be an overall Marathon Weekend logo program that includes a silhouette of Darth Vader and an image of a Stormtrooper running. This logo will be used on apparel, home goods and a commemorative banner. We will also have an assortment for those guests running in the Star Wars Half Marathon. I particularly like the tagline on the back of the jacket. Other items will include pins, car magnets, hats, and apparel for both women and men. There will be an entire assortment similar to the Half Marathon product for those guests participating in the Star Wars Dark Side Challenge, the ultimate test combining the Star Wars 10K and Half Marathon. Guests should also look for smaller assortments created for the Star Wars 10K, Star Wars 5K and the runDisney Kids Races. In addition to shirts for the 5K and 10K races, “I Did It” shirts will be offered for the Half Marathon and Dark Side Challenge races. Two shirts and a limited release pin will celebrate those guests earning the Kessel Run Commemorative Medal. I love the Millennium Falcon-inspired design for these items. Finally, we’re releasing three new Dooney & Bourke handbags for this event. The tote and Crossbody bag will have a leather hang tag that includes the event logo and an image of Darth Vader. Look for these commemorative items and more during runDisney Health & Fitness Expo at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park splashed onto the scene and officially opened at Walt Disney World Resort on April 1, 1995. Covering more than 60 acres, this ski resort-themed water playground has been giving guests the chance to experience big thrills and relaxing ways to chill out for more than 20 years. Today, you’re probably most familiar with the park’s iconic Mount Gushmore, a snow-capped, 90-foot-high peak, on top of which sits the “launch pad” for Summit Plummet. This 120-foot long slide sends thrill-seeking guests sliding down a 12-story drop at up to 60 mph and claimed world records for free-fall speed slides when it opened. One of the other favorite attractions is the colorful chairlift that takes you to up the mountain. Then you just have to choose an exciting way to slide back down! Tell us your favorite ‘snowy’ memory from Blizzard Beach in the comments. View the full article

Join us at the The Diamond Horseshoe. Recently guest author, Lori Fries, enjoyed dinner at this iconic spot in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. An all-you-care-to-eat feast will be offered through May 30, 2016. Learn About: Diamond Horseshoe Magic Kingdom Disney World Restaurants The Diamond Horseshoe recently re-opened for table-service lunch and dinner in Frontierland. We made an advance dining reservation (ADR) for The Diamond Horseshoe the first day we could. We ate dinner at 3:30PM, so I guess it was more of a late lunch/early dinner. We read one bad review from opening night, but as a local experienced Disney foodie I was excited to try something new. Atmosphere The horseshoe-shaped restaurant looks the same as it has for years. The Diamond Horseshoe Diamond Horseshoe Seating and Stage On the stage sat a beautiful old-time player piano. I was saddened that it was not operational. I asked if there are plans for entertainment but no one knew. The Diamond Horseshoe stage The Stage Eats The Saloon Feast they offer for a main course is a choice of: Barbecue pulled turkey served over cornbread, Spit-roasted ham served with country beans, or Stewed beef served with mashed potatoes. All three choices come with seasonal vegetables. Everyone at the table can order their own meal, and guests can get whichever entrée they want and can try another at any time. Menu Cover Menu Upon arrival, we were seated shortly after checking in. When our drinks came, my lemonade had floaters so I was concerned right away. The cornbread inside the basket was delicious, but the salad, on the other hand, needed some help. Their Frontier Salad – Tossed Greens, Tomatoes, Onion, Roasted Corn, and Cornbread Croutons is served with house-made chipotle-ranch dressing. The dressing was not tasty and the iceberg lettuce was just soaking in it. I think it sat too long. But mostly the dressing just was not good. And the lettuce was very watery to begin with. Salad Corn Bread My ticket was stamped with an allergy note, but the chef never came out. The server said everything was fine. I was a bit skeptical; they didn’t have any fish on the menu, so I just ate with caution. With that in mind, I tried the barbecue turkey. It was topped with jalapeño slices. It sat on top of cornbread. That’s right, more cornbread. I would have liked to have seen it on some other kind of bread or roll. I would have also liked it to come with the sauce on the side. And I like things saucy. The cornbread acted more like a sponge then an accompaniment. The barbecue turkey tasted a lot like the typical Disney parks barbecue pork sandwich that you would get from a quick service restaurant. I gave it a few bites and decided to try something else. I was not very hungry so I asked for mashed potatoes and enjoyed them. BBQ Turkey I did not want to try the ham, but my friends enjoyed it. Ham We asked for the stewed beef for the table with the gravy on the side. I would suggest doing the same in case you don’t like the gravy. Roast Beef and Gravy Roast Beef Close Up My favorite part of any meal is dessert and The Diamond Horseshoe offers two on one plate! Dessert was plated nicely but it was just okay. Frontier Desserts of campfire brownie and apple cranberry tart were nothing special. Desserts Dessert Close Up The price is $33 per adult including soft drink. They did give us a discount with our Tables in Wonderland card. Overview I was hoping for a western saloon show and I would only go back if entertainment was included. They don’t offer anything different for children. No chicken nuggets or mac & cheese. I have eaten many times at Disneyland’s Golden Horseshoe, and hope that the menu changes to be more like that one. What do you think about table service meals at Diamond Horseshoe?
