Advanced Dining Reservations are now available at Jungle Skipper Canteen in the Magic Kingdom, a restaurant which adds a whole new dimension to theme park dining at Walt Disney World Resort. Bold tastes from Asia, South America and Africa are prominent at the 222-seat table-service restaurant. Fun décor takes you to the mess hall, or to the jungle-inspired parlor once used by the company’s founder, Dr. Albert Falls and his family. Behind the once-secret bookcase, another dining room is in a former meeting room of the mysterious Society of Explorers and Adventurers. One of our favorite dishes are these steamed dumplings made with fresh pork, shrimp and the crunch of water chestnuts. The simple dipping sauce is the perfect accompaniment. It takes a little time to grind the meat in your food processor – but you also could ask your butcher to do it for you. And wonton wrappers are available in most grocery store produce aisles. Ditto the sambal oelek, a spicy Southeast Asian chile sauce usually made with hot red chile peppers, salt and sometimes vinegar. These dumplings make a great starter for any meal – or serve them as an entrée with a cool Asian salad. June 3 is National Egg Day, and to celebrate we’re sharing the recipe for a perfect breakfast dish to impress your family and friends. Trattoria al Forno has been dishing up this delicious Frittata with roasted red peppers, prosciutto, onions, potatoes, Pecorino Romano cheese and arugula—amongst other breakfast favorites—since it opened on Disney’s BoardWalk in December 2014. Prosciutto Frittata from Trattoria al Forno at Disney’s BoardWalk Makes 4 servings 3 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil ¾ cup slices prosciutto, cut into ½ inch squares (approximately 3 ounces by weight) 6 tablespoons diced red pepper 9 farm fresh eggs, lightly beaten with a fork 2 tablespoons diced green onion 3 teaspoons grated Pecorino Romano cheese 1. Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees 2. Heat oil in 10-inch nonstick, oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat until oil is hot. 3. Add prosciutto, stir continuously, cook until crisp, about 3-4 minutes. 4. Reduce heat to medium, add red peppers to the skillet, cook until softened, 2-3 minutes. 5. Remove the skillet from the burner momentarily, stir in eggs and green onion. 6. Return to burner, as eggs begin to cook, pull eggs in around the edge to allow uncooked mixture to flow to outer edges of the skillet, cook about 3 minutes until most of the egg is no longer runny. 7. Bake uncovered on the top rack of the oven till center is set, approximately 2- 5 minutes. 8. Remove from oven, sprinkle cheese on top, loosen frittata from side of skillet with spatula, slide onto plate, cut and serve. Cook’s Notes: If desired, thick-cut bacon may be substituted for the prosciutto. Trattoria al Forno is the perfect place to celebrate National Egg Day, with several other egg-cellent dishes—Poached eggs with fennel sausage over soft polenta; breakfast sandwiches three styles of Italian pork and eggs on mini Brioche buns; scrambled eggs with tomato, basil and hand-pulled Mozzarella; breakfast charcuterie with cured Italian meats and hard-boiled egg; Breakfast Pizza topped with a cracked egg, or two eggs served any style. There’s even an egg white, spinach and tomato omelet for kids! Headlining the enhancements are imaginative spaces for children, a jazzy restaurant and an English pub. Here’s a look at what’s to come after the Disney Wonder undergoes dry dock September 9 to October 23, 2016, in Cadiz, Spain… Marvel Super Hero Academy In Disney’s Oceaneer Club, Marvel Super Hero Academy will offer extraordinary adventures in which kids play an integral role. With the mentorship of some of Marvel’s greatest Super Heroes, young trainees will learn the value of teamwork, bravery and problem solving through hands-on play and programs. Spider-Man will appear in person to help children hone their spider senses by perfecting their skills of reflex, speed and sharp minds. Other Marvel Super Heroes will interact with children via a large digital display. In one program, kids can control the movement of a character on screen to practice super skills like repulsor blasting. Tiana’s Place Restaurant Tiana’s Place restaurant – inspired by Princess Tiana in “The Princess and the Frog” – will transport you to an era of southern charm, spirited jazz and street party celebrations. Here you’ll be treated to New Orleans dining and entertainment, with live music creating a French Quarter supper club atmosphere. Chefs will cook up Tiana’s recipes, drawing inspiration from the flavors and ingredients of the Louisiana bayou. Exclusively on the Disney Wonder, Marvel Super Hero Academy will offer extraordinary adventures in which each young guest plays an integral role. Throughout the academy, displays will feature equipment that helps make Marvel Super Heroes the mightiest in the universe. This summer, guests can enjoy a variety of Star Wars experiences at Disney Parks including the upcoming fireworks show, “Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular,” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios starting June 17. To celebrate a summer of Star Wars at Disney Parks, the D-Tech on Demand team is introducing a limited release collection of Star Wars-inspired artwork at the D-Tech on Demand kiosks in Florida and California. On the first and fifteenth day of each month this summer, guests will find a new piece of artwork used for creating customized or personalized mobile phone cases. Guests visiting Walt Disney World Resort will also find new retail MagicBands artwork. The two images of phone cases and retail MagicBands above include artwork being released on June 1. The process for creating a D-Tech on Demand phone case or retail MagicBand takes a few minutes. Guests can select their phone model or MagicBand color, chose a favorite design and add a name. For Star Wars artwork, names can be written in Aurebesh, one of the alphabets used in the Star Wars galaxy. This Disney Parks Blog article shows just how easy it is to create a unique phone case. Beginning June 15, additional artwork, as seen in the above and below images, will be added to the respective D-Tech on Demand kiosks. All artwork will only be available for a limited time (typically 30 days). I was always scared of the dark when I was little. So much so that I didn’t even want to walk down our hall with the lights off. I know, I’m was such a scaredy cat! If only I had had a cool tree in my house that lit up with magical scenes. Or maybe I should have imagined myself on a wild African safari, with the animals aglow in the sunset – that actually might have frightened me even more :). Lucky me! My daydreams are reality! Disney’s Animal Kingdom is awakening with some really amazing new nighttime offerings. Our designer, Jeff Maurer, used images by Disney photographers, David Roark and Todd Anderson, to create two wall papers. What’s your favorite summer night hangout? If you’ve spent some evenings in the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort, that may be an easy answer. The summer celebration gets underway this month with nightly music performances featuring a different theme practically every night. The Downtown Disney Live! Stage will feature popular favorites from some past years, as well as new groups. On Saturdays and Sundays, we fire things up with Dance Party nights featuring a varying lineup of big band, swing and rockabilly bands, including Phat Cat Swinger and Crown City Bombers, plus Top 40 and ‘80s groups. Island Reggae Band turns Mondays into Reggae nights, while Adelaide takes the stage for Latin nights on Tuesdays. Country and Cajun sounds take over Wednesday nights, and Thursday nights feature oldies and classic rock. Fridays mark the return of Polynesian nights, sponsored by Dole, featuring Tupua on the Downtown Disney stage. And the musical fun isn’t all after dark! Last week we gave you a First Look… Learn About: STK Orlando Downtown Disney Disney World Restaurants … and now we’re back with our full review of STK Orlando, the newest dining venue in Disney Springs! STK Orlando is the latest addition to the list of Signature Dining restaurants in Disney Springs, which also includes Morimoto Asia and The Boathouse (with Paddlefish and The Edison still on the way). But STK hasn’t only joined the dining line-up in Disney World — the Orlando location also joins fellow STK restaurants in New York, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, and D.C., with more to come. So let’s see how STK’s big city vibe fits into Disney World’s shopping, dining, and entertainment district with our first visit for dinner at STK Orlando! Atmosphere If you checked out our First Look, you already know that STK Orlando is located in the The Landing of Disney Springs; however, the location is easily viewed from the area’s new Town Center. Here is the view as you approach from the Orange Parking Garage. STK Orlando The exterior, therefore, fits right in while retaining its own unique look, with its resemblance to a refurbished train station from the early 1900s. Back of STK Once you climb the stairs leading you to the front of the restaurant, you’ll see STK among its more familiar neighbors. And the walls you see to the left surround the construction site for The Edison (now slated to open in early 2017). Lower Level Outdoor Seating Once you’re inside, the vibe immediately transitions from charming refurbished train station to urban sleek. Inside STK Orlando From the front desk, there are two dining areas immediately to your right (this is a change from the preview event we attended, when one of the dining areas was cleared of tables). Clean lines, white tables and dark floors define them both. I assume there will be a variety of DJs providing music at STK Orlando, but our evening was filled with super fun 70s and 80s tracks with dance beats behind them. (This won’t be the last time we discuss the music, though, as it plays an important factor in your experience.) DJ Now, we’ll take a trip upstairs to check out the scene (just FYI, elevator access is available as well). Stairwell to Upstairs Dining The upstairs indoor dining room includes a second bar and further seating for full dining. Overall, the feel is more casual and relaxed, while still providing an upscale setting and stellar service. Fortunately, it doesn’t disappoint… Upper Level Patio Dining Upper Level Patio Seating Upper Level Patio Atmosphere We didn’t really get a feel for this space during the preview event since it wasn’t arranged for dining. But we are happy to say that the day-to-day arrangements for this area are pretty great, offering some terrific views (it also helped that the weather was just about perfect on the night of our visit). Upper Level Patio Seating Oh, and if you’re curious about what’s in the building’s rounded turrets, here’s what you’ll find on the second floor — an open air fire pit surrounded by high-top table seating. STK Orlando Turrets Fire Pit I have to admit, I didn’t think there would be a lot to look at from here, but the new Town Center and recent additions to The Landing have really changed things around these parts! Upper Level Patio View Upper Level Patio View And it’s funny, because obviously Disney Springs is not a huge city, but the patio really does offer a nice bit of that urban, night-on-the-town feel. STK sign on Upper Level Patio Aside from the views, the other key difference between downstairs and upstairs is the volume of the music. The DJ’s tunes are piped throughout the building, but the volume is kept at lower levels upstairs, so you can more easily manage a conversation with your traveling companions. When you’re downstairs (which is where our meal took place), the volume of music increases throughout the evening — in fact, you’re even encouraged to get up and dance if you’d like. At 5:00 pm when we arrived I thought the levels were pretty average, but as the evening went on there were moments when my friends and I were yell-talking to each other to be heard. Basically, if you’re looking for a high-energy party atmosphere with a chance to kick your heels a bit, downstairs is your place. If you’re hoping to enjoy conversation with your friends and family, upstairs is your better bet. (If you’d like to sit in a specific spot, our server advised that it’s best to call STK Orlando directly to make your reservation, noting your request. Though seating in your preferred area can’t be guaranteed, the staff will do their best to accommodate requests.) Okay! This is a steakhouse, isn’t it? So let’s dig in… Eats Your meal at STK starts with complimentary bread. A batch of incredibly soft rolls topped with STK’s Blue Butter (melted blue cheese butter) is served with a small dish of pesto for dipping. Complimentary Bread with Blue Butter and pesto Don’t let the blue cheese deter you if you aren’t a fan of the flavor. I’m not, but it’s not prominent here and the bread is delicious. It stands on its own without the pesto. Complimentary Bread with Blue Butter and pesto Before we scoped out the cocktails, we also received water. I know, we don’t typically show you pictures of water here on the DFB , but I have a reason for it… Glass of Water I don’t think my water was ever down more than a sip or two during the entire evening. The staff at STK takes good care of its guests. Service was top-notch throughout our meal, from our fun and attentive server to the rest of the management and assisting staff. That said, we did try some STK Cocktails: the Strawberry Cobbler and the Secret Affair. STK Cocktail Menu Strawberry Cobbler and Secret Affair Strawberry Cobbler is Belvedere Vodka and fresh muddled strawberry served with a graham cracker rim. Strawberry Cobbler Even with its fun name and sweet rim, the flavors are otherwise simple and direct; this beverage really did taste like fresh strawberries. Strawberry Cobbler The Secret Affair was the more complex of the two, made of Purity Vodka, lime and watermelon, with Tajin chili powder lining the rim and a red chili pepper garnishing the drink. Secret Affair As anticipated, there is an intense kick from the rim right from the first sip, but eventually it gives way to the milder fruity tastes of the cocktail. Both beverages struck me as unique, but I’d recommend saving the cocktails for a bar visit instead of a full meal. If you plan to enjoy a drink with your meal I’d suggest pairing your entree with a wine that will enhance the flavors of your entree instead. (There is a full book in addition to this list below.) Wine and Beer Menu We tried a few appetizers next, but I’ll note that at STK you’re asked to order all your food at once, not including dessert. Our server explained that this helped him work together with the kitchen to keep the flow of the meal going (don’t worry — you’ll have plenty of time to explore your choices and ask any questions). Appetizer and Raw Bar Menu We started with an appetizer exclusive to STK Orlando: the Crispy Rock Shrimp with a chili remoulade. Crispy Rock Shrimp The really nice thing about this dish was that the golden, crisp breading and the accompanying remoulade both offered delicious flavors and textures, but ultimately neither overpowered the shrimp. I’m not huge into shrimp, but I found these addictive. Crispy Rock Shrimp We also went with the Lil’ BRGs, a signature STK appetizer. Wagyu beef is topped with a special sauce, caramelized onions, cheese and a tomato on a sesame seed bun. Lil’ BRGs I can’t say one bad thing about the taste of these burgers — the meat was fresh, tender, and wonderfully flavorful, and the caramelized onions added just the right amount of sweetness. Lil’ BRG toppings Lil’ BRG cross-section But here’s what you should know: I think the Lil BRGs look larger in the photograph than they really are. You’ll notice them next to the small side of house made pickles, and they’re actually no wider than that mini condiment dish. You’re paying $20 for two burgers that are… well, really Lil’. Lil’ BRGs Granted, Wagyu beef is probably some of the best you’ll have anywhere and it’s pricey wherever you go, but I did want you to have a heads-up on the size — these are smaller than your usual sliders, for sure. Let’s turn our attention to the Entrees. Entrees and Sides Menu And why don’t we start with the main event: STeaK ! Under the “Large” listings of the Steak choices (made for two to share), we chose the 32 ounce Porterhouse. The dish comes to you already sliced… and it’s a beautiful moment when it arrives. 32 ounce Porterhouse It really was terrific steak — I can’t think of one thing to change. It was prepared exactly to our medium rare request. The char was beautifully done, and the meat was so tender you could easily cut it with a fork. Closeup on the Porterhouse A friend of mine in our group used to work at Charley’s Steak House, which is consistently rated among the best in the country, and he remarked that this steak was on par with cuts there. The price is $92 for the 32 ounce. I mention that because as a price comparison to other Disney spots, the 32 oz Porterhouse at Yachtsman Steakhouse (aged 21 days) is currently $119, but that one does come with a trio of classic steakhouse sides. If you add three sides to the 32 oz. Porterhouse at STK coming in at $10 each, the total would be $122. The Porterhouse comes with your choice of two of STK’s eight sauces. You can choose to add any of the offered sauces to an entree for $2, or you can try them all for fun for $12. We did just that (even though, in all honesty, the meat didn’t require any sauce — it tasted great on its own.) 32 ounce Porterhouse Going clockwise from the left, the lineup is Chimichurri, Béarnaise, Au Poivre, the STK, the same Blue Butter we enjoyed on the bread, Red Wine, Horseradish, and STK Bold. STK Sauces The standouts were the Blue Butter and the Au Poivre with its outstanding peppercorn flavor. I also really enjoyed the Red Wine sauce, even though it was fairly standard. The STK signature sauce has a very definite hot kick — it’s like a honey sriracha. The STK Bold, on the other hand, is a more traditional steakhouse sauce with its expected — but certainly strong — Worcestershire and other usual flavors. STK Sauce Our other entrees included an STK Orlando exclusive: the Florida Grouper served atop Maitake mushrooms, fingerling potatoes, and truffle lobster brown butter. Florida Grouper The Grouper was definitely good and fresh, but I wanted to be much more “wowed” by this dish than I was. That said, the accompaniments were terrific, specifically the tasty mushrooms. Florida Grouper The Glazed Beef Short Rib is served with a unique green apple confit and horseradish cream. Glazed Beef Short Rib Glazed Beef Short Rib It was fall apart tender with a slightly sweet glaze providing a hint of crisp; simply delicious. Glazed Beef Short Rib Sides at STK are ordered a la carte and served family style. We couldn’t resist trying the Mac and Cheese since it’s another STK signature dish… and since it’s Mac and Cheese . Mac and Cheese The thick, bubbly layer of cheese on top tasted primarily of a sharp cheddar, and we also picked up on asiago. Mac and Cheese It was incredibly rich, and it pained me that I could only handle a few bites because it tasted so good. Mac and Cheese I didn’t think there would be anything particularly remarkable about the Parmesan Truffle Fries, but they were a really nice surprise. Parmesan Truffle Fries I don’t think I’ve ever said this about a potato dish, but these fries are melt-in-your-mouth good. Even when I was convinced I couldn’t take another bite of anything, I made room for a couple more of these. Parmesan Truffle Fries The biggest hit of the sides, though, may have been the Sweet Corn Pudding. I can’t help but associate this dish with Thanksgiving, but this was like Sweet Corn Pudding from the Best Thanksgiving of My Life. Sweet Corn Pudding Now, I LOVE sweet corn, so there’s that. But this comfort dish, with its texture almost like a custard, was nearly more reminiscent of a dessert than a side. Sweet Corn Pudding And speaking of Dessert… Dessert Menu … isn’t there always room for ice cream? ICE STK is a mini cone sampler. ICE STK Each of the ice creams was hard-packed and tasty, with Cookies and Cream, Birthday Cake, and Rocky Road as the flavors. ICE STK A bit of chocolate fudge was the finishing touch in the cones. Bottom of Mini Cones Super fun, but a little hard to share — unless there are three in your group, in which case it’s just the small matter of who gets which cone . Our server also recommended the Caramelito Bar. The menu description doesn’t tell you much — it just mentions cocoa nib marshmallow and chocolate bavarian cream, but there’s more to it than that. Topped off with a piece of chocolate decorated with the STK logo (sans name), three light layers of marshmallow and mousse are piled on top of a dark chocolate layer that is so dense it’s close to a ganache. Caramelito Bar For such light, fluffy layers, it’s very decadent; fortuantely, the generous size is great for sharing. It was a sweet ending to our first meal at STK Orlando. Overall A few logistics before we leave STK Orlando: in its opening days, STK Orlando was only open for dinner. However, the location began serving lunch as well on May 31st. Advance Dining Reservations can be made via the Walt Disney World website and by calling (407) WDW-DINE for dates beginning June 25th. Guests arriving earlier may reserve via the STK Orlando website or call directly at (407) 917-7440 (and remember, this is the best way to make your reservation if you’d like to note a seating preference). At the time of this publishing, STK Orlando does not accept the Tables in Wonderland discount, but it does count as a two Table Service credit as a Signature Dining option on the Disney Dining Plan (though it is not currently listed as such on the Disney World website, we confirmed it with our server and a call to the location as well). Well, the physical AND dining landscape has certainly changed in Disney Springs, hasn’t it? In regards specifically to Signature Dining, STK Orlando joins the more recent offerings of The Boathouse with its high-end yet breezy nautical feel, and Morimoto Asia with its striking contemporary style. Now STK Orlando is offering its own big city vibe right in the heart of Disney Springs, giving guests a taste (ha!) of the new nightlife in the area. Sleek settings, signature service, and tempting dishes could provide all the ingredients for a great evening out for those in the mood for an upscale experience in the new Disney Springs. It’s official! After several weeks of anticipation, the NFL officially announced at a press conference today at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort that the 2017 Pro Bowl is coming to Orlando and will be played at Camping World Stadium near downtown. But here’s the best part: Several of the official Pro Bowl activities will be staged at Walt Disney World Resort as part of the league’s new approach of making Pro Bowl Week a celebration of all levels of football – from youth to high school to the NFL’s best. The Pro Bowl teams’ practices, an NFL Flag football event and other youth football events will take place at our sports complex. It’s the perfect fit when you consider the sports complex annually hosts more than 100 youth sports events, such as the Pop Warner Super Bowl, and regularly attracts NFL players for the Tom Shaw Performance Camp and the Gruden QB Camp. Officials from the NFL, Disney Sports, ESPN and Florida Citrus Sports, plus Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, were part of the announcement Wednesday along with former NFL star Charles Woodson. The press conference followed an informal youth football clinic involving kids from Orlando’s Edgewater High School. The announcement is quite a triumph for Central Florida because of the significant economic impact that comes with it as well as the national exposure from the ESPN telecast of the game. Five years ago this week, we marked the loss of two iconic Disneyland performers – first Wally Boag, who starred as Pecos Bill in the “Golden Horseshoe Revue” and then the very next day, his longtime Disneyland co-star, Betty Taylor. The ‘Clown Prince of Disneyland,’ Wally Boag starred at the Golden Horseshoe for nearly 27 years and in nearly 40,000 performances. He also brought his unique humor and comedic style to the Diamond Horseshoe Review at Walt Disney World Resort when it opened in 1971. Boag even provided the voice of the Audio-Animatronics parrot, Jose, for “Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room.” Betty Taylor played Slue Foot Sue to Wally Boag’s Pecos Bill five days a week for nearly three decades, having joined the “Golden Horseshoe Revue” just one year after it began in 1955. She continued in the role of Slue Foot Sue owner until 1987, for an amazing 45,000 performances. Later in the summer of 2011, Disneyland park hosted a special tribute show in their honor – “The True Legends of the Golden Horseshoe.” Dorothy Fields, Betty Taylor’s sister, and Heather Dinkins, Wally Boag’s daughter, were joined by Miriam Nelson, the original Golden Horseshoe Revue choreographer, along with Disney Legends including Ron Dominguez, Jack Lindquist, Richard Sherman and Mouseketeer Bobby Burgess. The tribute featured some of the most-loved Golden Horseshoe performances and footage of classic performances by Wally and Betty. Candace Payne set internet records last month when she captured the hearts of millions with her genuine, infectious laughter while trying on a Chewbacca mask. With her instantaneous celebrity status, she spent the next week crossing the country being interviewed by talk shows and national morning shows. What was missing from her travels was a visit to the place where Star Wars lives and the Force is strong – in Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort. Expanding the list of Broadway stars sailing the high seas with us this summer, the incredibly talented Mandy Gonzalez delighted Disney Magic cruisers with performances during our transatlantic voyage to Europe. Starring roles for Gonzalez have included Elphaba in the Broadway production of “Wicked,” Nina Rosario in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical “In the Heights” and Princess Amneris in the Elton John and Tim Rice musical “Aida.” When her powerful voice and invigorating presence took over the stage in the Walt Disney Theatre, guests got a glimpse at the electricity Gonzalez is known for on Broadway. Her family-friendly performance was followed by a show just for adults in Fathoms nightclub – an evening of great music and hilarity, all revolving around love and its crazy themes and variations. What’s more, Gonzalez led a special class for teens and tweens, showing them what it takes to create a character and space by teaching a song and staging from “Aida.” The fun didn’t stop there! Gonzalez also wowed Disney cruisers in a surprise duet with fellow Broadway star Susan Egan. Talk about a dynamic duo! Celebrating the birthdays of a tween and a teenager at the same time wasn’t a problem for Mexican actress Dominika Paleta: they festejaron with a trip to Walt Disney World Resort! Dominika, who is also a blogger and model, recently visited our resort with husband Fabian and daughters Maria and Aitana, who celebrated their 14th and 10th birthdays, respectively, while on vacation earlier this month. Both girls were very happy to meet Mickey Mouse, wearing their birthday ears while spending time with their parents. And that’s because kids their age have lots of fun with their families at Walt Disney World Resort, including thrilling attractions and great spots for photos. Selfies anyone?
