We’re coming to you today from Kabuki Cafe! Learn About: Kabuki Cafe Epcot Restaurants Disney World Restaurants This pretty but understated snack stand in Epcot’s beautiful Japan Pavilion is easy to pass by, unless you know about Kakigori — the Japanese Shaved Ice that is Kabuki Cafe’s star treat (it’s also a spot to grab a super quick Sushi snack for your Showcase stroll). Fans of Kakigori know that the Shaved Ice typically comes in your choice of fruit flavors like Strawberry, Melon, Cherry, or Tangerine (or you can try ‘em all with the Rainbow option). You can get it with or without the Sweet Milk Topping, but that’s about the only twist available to this classic icy cold snack. Until now… thanks to the addition of Sake Mists to the menu! Kabuki Cafe Unlike the regular Kakigori, these drinks — as you’ve likely deduced from the name — are for adults only. They pair the Shaved Ice with alcohol, and Blood Orange, Chocolate Cherry, and Coffee are your flavor choices. Kabuki Cafe menu We got the Blood Orange and the Chocolate Cherry, but the process is the same for all three versions of the Mists. The mixture that is poured over the ice is pre-mixed, as opposed to a free poured sake floater added with the syrups. Blood Orange and Chocolate Cherry Sake Mists I loved the Blood Orange Sake Mist, and I’m not even that big into sake, typically! Blood Orange Sake Mist The sweet-and-slightly-tart orange worked really well with the dry taste of the sake. Blood Orange Sake Mist The Chocolate Cherry Sake Mist, on the other hand, was definitely not a hit. It tasted VERY syrupy, and I didn’t think the chocolate translated well into a beverage syrup. Add to that the cherry flavor, which had the effect of making the already not great chocolate taste more like a kid’s cough medicine. Chocolate Cherry Sake Mist I’d say stick with the more typical fruity version offered here, and if you enjoy sake — or Kakigori — you might find this to be an extra fun treat… if you’re 21 or over, that is . At any rate, it’s kind of fun to see them changing things up at Kabuki Cafe. Let’s take a look at some of the amazing innovations guests will find at Shanghai Disney Resort. 1. TRON Lightcycle Power Run has a sleek, innovative vehicle design that combines onboard audio and lighting to give guests the feeling of speeding through the Grid on two-wheeled Lightcycle. 2. Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure is the most advanced version of this classic Disney attraction to date. It employs a new ride system where the boats are controlled magnetically and can spin or turn and even go backward. Soaring Over the Horizon utilizes high-definition, laser-projected footage shot by a groundbreaking, first-of-its-kind camera system that captured the large-format images from vistas around the globe. Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue features newly designed Space Cruiser vehicles and a newly enhanced interactive targeting system which is more reactive and allows guests to better understand when their blaster has come into contact with its intended target. 6. Stitch Encounter showcases Disney’s latest advances in real-time animation. Through digital projection and sophisticated, voice-activated animation, guests have a new way to talk with Stitch, the lovable alien from Disney’s animated film, “Lilo & Stitch.” 7. Voyage to the Crystal Grotto is the only attraction in any Disney park on which guests ride through the park’s castle. In the attraction’s climactic scene, state-of-the-art projection mapping and scenic illusions bring the magic of the crystal to life before guests’ eyes. 8. “Once Upon A Time” Adventure inside Enchanted Storybook Castle brings the story of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” to life through a first-of-its-kind, interactive walkthrough experience, combining computer generated imagery, digital media, special effects, projections, scenic illusions and motion-tracking technology which allow the guests to become active participants in the story alongside Snow White. 9. “Eye of the Storm – Captain Jack’s Stunt Spectacular” at El Teatro Fandango features an exciting climactic moment never before achieved in any indoor theatrical performance. I love collecting books about Disney Parks. You may recall previous Disney Parks Blog articles about two recent favorites – Poster Art of the Disney Parks and the Magic Kingdom Storybook. Today, I’m adding another book to my “favorite” column – a children’s book about the Haunted Mansion attraction. This book is part of a new series from Disney Publishing called “Disney Parks Presents.” I recently spoke with Eric Geron, Associate Editor with Disney Publishing, about this new series that he dreamed up. “Disney Parks Presents is a series of picture books with CDs and original artwork based on beloved Disney Parks rides and attractions,” explained Eric. “The books are a fantastic way for readers to relive classic Disney attractions from the comfort of their own homes or to experience them for the very first time.” The Haunted Mansion is the first Disney Parks attraction featured in the Disney Parks Presents series. On the inside cover, readers will find a CD containing a uniquely created 5-minute and 32-second musical tour through the attraction. The track includes the classic “Grim Grinning Ghosts” song by Buddy Baker and Xavier Atencio that inspired the book. Illustrations for the 32 page book were created by James Gilleard, an artist from London, England. Eric said the art department loved his “retro, cool vibe” that complemented the overall silly and spooky tone of the book. I selected a handful of illustrations I love for the image above. The clock striking 13 is one of my favorite attraction scenes, so I was glad to see it included. I was also delighted to find the Hatbox Ghost on one of the pages. I asked Eric about his favorite scene in the book. “I love the scene from the ballroom where the ghost is blowing out birthday cake candles,” replied Eric. “If you look carefully, you’ll even spot a hidden Mickey on the table that’s similar to one seen in the attraction.” Future “Disney Parks Presents” books will feature attractions such as Pirates of the Caribbean and the world famous Jungle Cruise, each with its own unique art style. Back in March, I shared my favorite warm eats for cool days, and now in June with temperatures on the rise, it’s the perfect time to share my favorite picks for light, refreshing meals and snacks. Here’s a guide to Disneyland Resort dishes that are perfect for summertime. Disneyland park Picnic Salad, Hungry Bear Restaurant – My favorite refreshing summertime salad with turkey breast, strawberries, feta, cranberries, roasted almonds and jicama. Try the Turkey Caesar Wrap if you’re looking for lunch on the go. Corn on the Cob, Edelweiss Snacks – Choose traditional buttered corn on the cob or the zesty chili-lime variety. Either way, you can’t go wrong with grilled corn in the summer. Baked Fish Tacos, Rancho del Zocalo – Topped with cool cabbage slaw and chipotle-ranch, these baked fish tacos are a light summertime staple. Crispy Chicken Mixed Green Salad, The Golden Horseshoe – Kick up your feet in the cool air conditioning and take in a live performance by Laughing Stock Co. If you’re not looking for a full meal, try one of the sundaes or an ice cream float. Vietnamese Twice-Cooked Beef Taco, Carthay Circle Lounge – These delicious tacos are topped with a refreshingly cool pineapple-mint salsa. A few weeks ago, I shared a Disney Parks Blog Unboxed video about new Dooney & Bourke items coming this summer to Disney Parks. Today, I have additional information about the release party that will be held on Saturday, July 23 at Cherry Tree Lane inside the Marketplace Co-Op at Disney Springs. At this event, we are releasing two new collections including handbags inspired by the classic Disney Parks attraction, “it’s a small world.” The four silhouettes in this collection will include a Shopper Tote, a Pouchette, a Wallet and a Wristlet. The second collection, called “Lovebirds,” will include a Shopper Tote and a Letter Carrier. For the first time, we will introduce four limited edition retail MagicBands containing Dooney & Bourke-inspired designs. Each MagicBand will have an edition size of 1,500, and each MagicBand will contain a specially designed slider with the Dooney & Bourke logo. The MagicBands will be packaged in decorative boxes. Finally, guests attending this release party will have an opportunity to meet Ian Ray, Creative Director for Dooney & Bourke. He will be appearing at Cherry Tree Lane from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. that day. The attraction, which opened July 1, 1975, offers one of the best views of Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom Park. The attraction whisks guests on a 10-minute tour from Rockettower Plaza, above the Tomorrowland Speedway, and offers a sneak peak inside Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. Before the Disney Magic begins our Mediterranean season in early August, she will take Disney cruisers to explore the Baltic region with stops in some of Europe’s most celebrated cities including Tallinn, St. Petersburg, Helsinki and Stockholm. Of course, no matter where you travel, we always want to make sure you do it in style, which is why our merchandise teams is making sure that we have you covered from head to toe, literally. Storybook Land Canal Boats officially opened on June 16, 1956, nearly a year after the previous version of the attraction, Canal Boats of the World, debuted on the opening day of Disneyland park. The transformation of the attraction into Storybook Land Canal Boats was completed in only a few months, and in commemoration of its 60th anniversary we’re pleased to share some of the photos taken during construction, including of Walt Disney inspecting the progress of this now-classic Fantasyland favorite. Storybook Land Canal Boats features a guided tour cruising by detailed miniature locations from classic Disney films, set among hills, valleys and caverns filled with enchanted homes and villages. Created on a 1:12 miniature scale and featuring unique horticulture design, it’s one of the most richly detailed attractions at any Disney park. The settings depicted span from the straw, stick and brick houses of the “Three Little Pigs” from Disney’s 1933 Silly Symphony short, to the most recently added Fjord-side village of Arendelle from “Frozen.” Storybook Land Canal Boats is also the only known attraction that begins by traveling through the mouth of the whale from “Pinocchio,” Monstro! There are so many events to enjoy at the 2016 Epcot Food and Wine Festival! We can’t wait to learn more about the Special Events that will be offered this year. We hope food and wine pairings like the French Family Meal Traditions will be back. And we’re excited to see Party for the Senses and the Rockin’ Burger Block Party return as well. But some of our favorite events of the festival are Low-Cost Seminars and Demonstrations, which take place at the Festival Center throughout the day. Our lunch at Le Cellier had run longer than we expected, and so we high-tailed it to the Festival Center. Information Desk at Festival Center When we got there, we found that they had basically sold our spots! Fortunately, the cast members found a few extra seats and place settings, so we were set up and ready to go in short order. Seating and Presentation Area at Festival Center I had chosen this particular seminar because I really enjoy traditional Ice Wine, so I thought it would be interesting to try a different version. Besides, I was intrigued by the notion of using a dessert wine as the basis of cocktail. Our presenters were Margot and Wade Holtzman, winemakers and owners of Still River Winery. The pair were very knowledgeable and shared a lot about the process of making their wine. It was really fun to learn how they sort of “fell into” making apple ice wine! It was basically a hobby based on one of their travel adventures, and it’s blossomed into a business for the couple. Presenters Margot and Wade Holtzman After hearing a bit about their operation and how it’s grown in recent years, we had the opportunity to taste a sample of the wine. It was pleasantly sweet, but with a bright, crisp flavor — a clear indication that this special wine was made from apple juice, rather than the customary grape juice. Place Setting and Sample of Still River Apple Ice Wine But our place setting also included recipes for two different cocktails using the Apple Ice Wine as their basis. I thought this was kind of a cool concept, offering a lighter cocktail in terms of flavor and alcohol content. The first cocktail that we tried was the Sparkling Frozen Apple. To make it, just add two ounces of Apple Ice Wine to a champagne flute, and then top with Prosecco. For a festive touch, garnish with Pomegranate Seeds. This would make a great aperitif to serve to guests as they arrive for a holiday party. Sparkling Frozen Apple Cocktail The second cocktail was a little more potent. The Caramel Apple Martini combined the wine with Lovoka Caramel Vodka Liqueur. While this was a bit sweet for my friend and me, she did think it tasted quite a bit like a caramel apple. So if you love your Mickey Caramel Apples and would like to try them in a grown-up form, then this is the recipe for you! Caramel Apple Martini Overall, I really liked the concept of making wine-based cocktails. This week, I was fortunate enough to meet an inspiring teacher during one of our Disney Youth Education Series programs who values the importance of education and is truly passionate about the young lives she influences. Mona Herbert, gifted resource educator at Metairie Academy for Advanced Studies in Louisiana, returned to Walt Disney World Resort on Tuesday celebrating two decades of participating in Disney Youth Education Series (YES) programs here. Since 1996, Herbert has been a huge YES advocate and has brought over 800 students and 500 accompanying parents to take part in the Disney Youth Education Series at Walt Disney World Resort. What initially drew her to the Youth Education Series was a need for more immersive and engaging science trips that incorporate a setting of ‘multi-stimuli’ that helps ignite a student’s passion for learning. “The students get to see what we’ve done all year in school come to life here at Disney,” Herbert said. “It helps them spark that creativity and imagination.” During this celebratory trip this week, Herbert, along with her fourth-grade students from Metairie, LA, experienced a hands-on, educational trip as they ventured through Magic Kingdom Park and discovered the importance of motion, kinetic energy and physics in an information-rich setting. This past week, the students participated in various interactive programs such as Energy and Waves Physics Lab, Properties of Motion Physics Lab and Discovering the American Spirit. These tailored workshops allow students the opportunity to learn the necessary skill sets of innovation, collaboration, and problem-solving strategies. Jemal Taylor, senior sales manager for Disney Youth Programs, presented Herbert with a limited edition picture of one of her favorite attractions, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, to commemorate 20 years of bringing students from Louisiana to partake in Disney’s in-park educational programs. “We are thrilled to have inspiring teachers such as Herbert participate, and in this case, celebrate, her memorable experiences with Disney Youth Programs,” said Taylor. During one of the programs, students go behind the scenes of Space Mountain where they discover not only the physics behind a roller coaster but also how lighting and acoustics are used to entertain and amaze guests from all over the world. This particular workshop allows students to gain a conceptual understanding of the properties of motion while experiencing the ride with the lights on to learn and appreciate how motion and energy come. Herbert plans to continue bringing students to Disney’s Youth Education Series programs because she believes that every child should have a chance to experience how a facilitated program presented in a rich, immersive environment, can be a powerful stimulus to students of all ages. “I want the gears to kick in, the neurons to grow and the creativity to never stop because our future depends on it,” said Herbert. Great news today for Rick Bayless fans (and fans of great Mexican food in general)! We have an opening date for Frontera Cocina in Disney Springs! Frontera Cocina sign Frontera Cocina by Rick Bayless (host of “Mexico-One Plate at a Time” and recent recipient of the Julia Child Award) just announced via Facebook and Twitter that the Grand Opening of the Disney Springs location will be this coming Monday, June 27th! @Frontera Cocina via Facebook We got to check out the still in-progress space a few days ago, and things seem to be shaping up nicely for the big day! Though the windows of one side were still covered… Frontera Cocina … we could see some of the features such as the show kitchen and the bottles on the “Wall of Fame” (albeit with a bit of sun glare ) in the front room from the other side. During the hot summer months, there’s not much better for young “Frozen” fans than staying cool while enjoying a little friendly competition led by some of their favorite characters!
