Last summer, you could find Shave Ice at Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Harambe Fruit Market. Now it has made a return… just a little ways around the bend! Shave Ice Stand outside of Harambe Market Just outside of Harambe Market in Animal Kingdom’s Africa (this is a full counter service location not to be confused with — and not to far from — Harambe Fruit Market) is where we found the Shave Ice Machine. Shave Ice Flavor Syrups outside of Harambe Market The printed menus weren’t yet on display, but flavors to choose from include Mango-Passion Fruit, Watermelon, and Pina Colada. These are returning flavors from last summer. Fortunately, that option to spike your Shave Ice has returned too, and choices still include vodka or rum. This is just another way to cool down in Animal Kingdom while the Jungle Juice Slushy is still missing from Mahindi. (Of course, if you’re really missing the taste of Jungle Juice, keep in mind that Dawa Bar still has the Ngumu Jungle Juice — currently spiked with vodka and peach schnapps — available to order.) Because remember… even if the calendar says fall is soon approaching (and it’s already arrived in Magic Kingdom!), the Central Florida temperatures will continue to say otherwise for some time yet . Disneyland’s Donut (Doughnut?) Cart near Sleeping Beauty Castle is a must-do if you like unique donut concoctions. After all, this is where the so-called Dole Whip Donut took up residence a few weeks ago! Dole Whip Donut And it’s where we found the Matterhorn Macaroon Donut, too! This donut featured the iconic Disneyland Matterhorn Macaroon, and it was awesome! Matterhorn Donut at Disneyland Well now the donut cart has reinvented the Matterhorn Macaroon Donut and created the dangerously delicious Avalanche Donut! Avalanche Donut This massive treat is a yeast donut (light and fluffy!) with vanilla glaze and toasted coconut. But you’re really in this one for the chunks of coconut macaroon and the miniature Matterhorn! All told, that’s a lot of stuff on top of a donut, so you might be inclined to share this one! Tonight’s “After Dark” image was snapped of an attraction that’s at the top of my list for my first visit to Hong Kong Disneyland – Mystic Manor. Here, guests board Mystic Magneto-Electric Carriages for a tour of the manor house and private museum of Lord Henry Mystic. When Lord Henry’s faithful monkey Albert appears, he accidentally opens a mysterious music box rumored to make inanimate objects spring to life. The “Mickey’s Most Merriest Celebration” stage show brings in Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy and Pluto, and many others who drop by on Mickey’s party dressed in their Christmas best, ready to ring in the season with holidays with carols, old and new. Another can’t-miss moment is the “Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade.” This enchanting holiday procession features marching toy soldiers, dancing gingerbread men, Disney characters, Santa Claus and more! Back for an impressive seventh year, The Great Irish Hooley marks the nearly halfway point to St. Patrick’s Day. Much like its better-known, mid-March counterpart, this boutique Irish festival celebrates Irish song, dance, food and drink from August 31 – September 3, 2018. With a focus on Irish music, expect traditional, Celt grass, folk, blues, rock and soul styles to steal the Raglan Road stages, both indoors and out. Nine bands will share the spotlight, including a trio of headliners: JigJam — The multi-award-winning Irish quartet will bring their captivating brand of “CeltGrass” (a.k.a. I-Grass) – blending the best of traditional Irish music with Bluegrass and Americana. (Friday through Monday) Lisa Canny – The outrageously talented Lisa Canny, 7-time All-Ireland champion on harp and banjo, is an emerging Irish force blending pop and hip-hop with traditional Irish rhythms. (Saturday through Monday) Billow Wood – Known as Flat Out when they played Raglan Road in 2016, this male/female four-piece band fuses their unique brand of instrumentation with multi-vocals and harmonies for a blend of Irish and folk music. (Monday) Toe-tappin’, foot stompin’ jigs are encouraged, so much so that champion Irish dancer Ciaran Keating, Raglan Road’s show choreographer, will host an entertaining workshop that traces the origins of Irish dance through contemporary times. Of course, the ever-popular Raglan Road Irish Dancers will perform throughout the festival as well. Expect to find fine Irish cuisine, local and national craft beers, new hand-crafted cocktails, Celtic face-painting and more. Animal Kingdom’s Pandora — The World of AVATAR is known for a few of its more unique eats almost as much as it’s well known for the land’s headliner attractions and remarkable atmosphere. Pongu Pongu For instance, the Night Blossom at Pongu Pongu — Pandora’s beverage and snack stop — has been a huge hit. So much so, that this drink has also received a spiked makeover with a recently added Rum Blossom version. Night Blossom The drinks have been such a huge hit that perhaps they’ve overshadowed what was supposed to be Pongu Pongu’s signature snack: the Pongu Lumpia. Because on our visit to Pongu Pongu today, we realized that the Pongu Lumpia is no longer listed on the menu. Pongu Pongu Menu These eggroll-style snacks presented pineapple and cream cheese together in a wonton wrapper. And from the get-go, reviews were quite mixed. The Pongu Lumpia gained a reputation as a love-it-or-hate-it snack, with few opinions in between. Even our DFB team was quite divided on the treat. Pongu Lumpia Still, those who love it tend to REALLY love it, so we imagine this will come as a sad surprise to some stopping at Pongu Pongu. We should note that we checked with a Cast Member and as of the day of this publishing (August 23), they do still have a few Lumpia on hand for a few more orders, but once they’re gone, that’s it. The Cast Member we spoke with shared that they did not believe this to be a temporary change, but did not know with absolute certainty. But if it does come back, we certainly don’t expect to see it anytime soon. So, obviously there are some food changes going on in Pandora, including the recent removal of the Vegetable Curry Pods at Satu’li Canteen. So far, though, neither of these items has any specific replacements, as the Colossal Pretzel that is currently on the menu has been available at Pongu Pongu for some time now. If you’ve been following along, you may already be well aware of Disney’s conservation efforts which were announced in late July. Measures to eliminate plastic waste in Disney destinations worldwide include refillable amenities in Resort rooms and the reduction of plastic shopping bags as well as the reduction of plastic straws used at the resorts and restaurants. It was announced that these efforts were to be in place by mid-2019. Single-Use Plastic Straws to be Eliminated However, implementations have already begun in earnest. We just reported that plastic straws are now available only by request at several restaurants in Walt Disney World. And now, we’ve learned that Disneyland Resort is set to eliminate single-use plastic straws, lids, and shopping bags across property this week. According to Mouse Mail (an official Disneyland publication) plastic straws are to be available only by request. And plastic lids for adult iced beverages will no longer be offered. (Currently in Disney World, kids will continue to get plastic straws in the kids’ cups.) Please note that guests with disabilities who may require a straw or lid for their beverage will be accommodated with alternative options, and the Services for Guests with Disabilities team will be available before and during visits. Plastic shopping bags will only be available by request in merchandise locations as well.
