It starts with a crispy flatbread crust and is topped with sour cream, macaroni and cheese, three cheese blend, chives, and crumbled bacon bits! Bacon Macaroni and Cheese Flatbread This is a seriously delicious — and seriously filling — flatbread that combines some of my favorite things! The sour cream is an inspired choice of “sauce” that gives the whole thing a tangy, addictive quality (as if the three cheese blend and bacon weren’t irresistible enough!). But even if you’re not a huge Sour Cream fan, the whole thing blends together so well that it won’t stand out to you. Bacon Macaroni and Cheese Flatbread The macaroni and cheese is made with soft elbow noodles that contrast with the crispy crust (baked to golden brown!) and the chewy bacon bits. The Roaring Twenties ushered in the fizz-pop era of champagne toasts and sequin-drenched flapper dresses. To my younger self, it seemed like a magical time filled with glitz and glamour, which explains why my Halloween costume of choice on more than one occasion was a short fringe dress and a black bob wig, complete with red lipstick, of course! You can imagine my delight when I found out that The Edison would be hosting “A Gatsby Evening” over Labor Day Weekend. Already one of my favorite venues at Disney Springs, the party promises a lavish affair including a welcome cocktail, passed hors d’oeuvres, and an incredible lineup of entertainment: live music, “The Pearls,” stilt walkers, a tap dancer, an aerialist, and much, much more! Dust off your dancing shoes and get ready to be dazzled – hopefully I’ll see you there, dolled up in your flapper attire and 1920s-inspired suits. The next time you’re on safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, be on the lookout for Aella (pronounced “eye-la”), a two-month-old Masai giraffe calf who just made her debut on the Kilimanjaro Safaris savanna. Guests and Cast should be able to easily spot her as she is the youngest and smallest giraffe in the herd. Born on June 29, Aella was more than five-feet-tall at birth. Up until now, she has been spending precious moments bonding and nursing with her mom Lily in a backstage habitat. Named after an Amazon warrior, Aella is known to be a brave and bold young giraffe with a curious and independent spirit. She’s adventurous enough to explore on her own, sometimes leaving mom a few paces behind. Aella’s birth marks a first for her parents – mom Lily and dad George. The pair was chosen to breed through the Species Survival Plan (SSP), which is overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and ensures responsible breeding of threatened and endangered species. Breeding this pair is important to the long-term survival of the species because it adds more genetic diversity to the giraffe population, which helps ensure future generations. Aella will nurse for about a year, and then, as a herbivore, she will move to the lush vegetation available throughout the savanna. When full grown, she will use her 18-inch tongue to strip leaves off thorny branches from the tops and sides of trees to consume up to 75 pounds of food a day. That’s a tall order! The Masai giraffe is a vulnerable species found primarily in Kenya and Tanzania. There are believed to be roughly 32,000 Masai giraffes left in the wild, and their population continues to decline because of poaching and habitat loss. The Disney Conservation Fund supports conservation efforts in Africa to protect wildlife habitats, including those of giraffes. Earlier this year, several Disney animal care experts went to Uganda to help relocate a herd of giraffes across the Nile River to establish a newer, safer habitat away from oil-drilling fields. In keeping with the general feel of its home in Adventureland, much of the upcoming new eatery, The Tropical Hideaway, has remained an intriguing mystery. The Tropical Hideaway Concept Art ©Disney So far, we have simply known that this new area in Adventureland — which will be tucked between Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room and the Jungle Cruise attractions — would be “Coming Soon,” according to writing on the construction walls surrounding the spot. Coming Soon… The Tropical Hideaway However, Disney has just confirmed that The Tropical Hideaway will be opening later this year! And this marketplace will feature globally-inspired food and drinks! Market eats will include a variety of warm steamed Bao Buns. The three types will be a Spiced Vegetable Bao, a Kaffir Lime Chicken Bao, and a Bulgogi Beef Bao. Chilled Ramen Salad will also be on the menu along with “a tropical-inspired snack.” Sweet Pineapple Lumpia, which Disney World guests will recognize from Animal Kingdom’s Pandora as a pineapple and cream cheese spring roll, will also be served. Tropical Hideaway Menu Items ©Disney As far as the setting of the Hideaway, an open-air dock will offer views of the Jungle River waterfront while the “musical sounds of the tropics” will fill the air. In the evenings, torch lights will transform the Hideaway into a lovely place to relax once the sun sets. Are you planning a visit to Walt Disney World Resort this fall? Then Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom Park is an absolute must-do event. This in-park party celebrates Halloween with spooky decor, Disney characters in Halloween costumes, complimentary trick-or-treating, and entertainment you have to see to believe! Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, which requires a special ticket to attend, will be held on the following nights: August 28 and 31; September 3, 7, 9, 11, 14, 16, 18, 21, 23, 25, 28 and 30; and October 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19, 21, 23, 25, 26, 28, 30 and 31. Party fun takes place from 7 p.m.-midnight, although party ticket holders may enter the park as early as 4 p.m. to enjoy regular park offerings. Guests of all ages are welcome to dress in costume on party nights (make sure your costume fits within the park guidelines here!). Earlier this summer, right at the start of our Alaska season, I shared with you a few tips on how to relax and unwind aboard a Disney cruise to Alaska. We recently gave you a sneak peek at all the Holiday Fun coming to Disney World for the 2018 Season! Epcot Christmas Tree During the Christmas in July Media Event, we were also able to participate in a preview of Disney’s Yuletide Fantasy Tour, which will be offered once again this year on select dates in November and December. This 3.5-hour tour brings guests backstage to learn about what goes on behind the scenes to make the Holiday Season completely magical in Disney World! Christmas in July Media Preview The tour begins at Epcot, where a Cast Member Tour Guide greets the participants. Then, it’s off to a festively decorated bus to head over to a backstage warehouse while the Tour Guide shares stories about what Christmases were like for Walt Disney and his family. Walt Disney in a Vintage Photo Guests will also notice headsets in the seats on the bus — these are great for use during the walking tour so you don’t miss any details of what the Guide has to share! Now, something to note: guests are encouraged to leave their bags and belongings on the bus. This is not simply for guest comfort — it’s also due to the fact that pictures and videos are prohibited in the backstage areas, so you needn’t bring your cameras anyway. (Guests are also given bottles of water to bring inside the warehouse… because even though it will probably be less so in the winter months, the tour space can get toasty!) Once inside, guests have a chance to take in the sheer amount of decorations stored in the Holiday Services Warehouse. Though many of these will be in use during the holiday season, you can still get a great idea of the massive undertaking of decorating every corner of Disney World! Fresh Flowers in Crystal Palace During the Christmas in July preview, the department was working on arrangements for weddings and corporate events, and we were able to explore the cooler filled with fresh flowers… and we even received a little surprise (but that’s a secret!). New to the tour this year is a final stop at Amorette’s Patisserie in Disney Springs. Amorette’s Patisserie during the Holidays Tour guests will be decorating a tour-exclusive Disney-themed Gingerbread Man, and will even receive a special gift at the end of the class that will correlate with their Disney Gingerbread! (We don’t know all the details yet, as Amorette’s would like to keep some of the information a SURPRISE for as long as they can!) A new, fan-friendly event is coming to Walt Disney World Resort just in time for Labor Day weekend – the unofficial end of summer. The Labor Day Fan Zone – taking place Sept. 1-2 inside the Visa Athletic Center at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex – is an interactive fan festival featuring high-energy music by a popular DJ, food and beverage options, event merchandise, vendor booths, character greetings and big-screen televisions showing various sporting events. The event runs 7:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m., both days. It’s going to be a busy weekend at the sports complex, so the Labor Day Fan Zone provides a nice way for people to relax and have some fun in between other activities. Access to the Labor Day Fan Zone is included in the admission price to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The sports complex admission price for Adults and kids who are 10+ is $18.50; the admission price for children ages 3 – 9 is $13.50. More than 260 athletes from 43 teams – including five from the U.S. Virgin Islands and five from Puerto Rico – will participate in the Disney Labor Day Baseball Classic, Aug. 31-Sept. 3. Nearly 4,400 boys’ and girls’ soccer players from 270 teams around the country will be competing in the Disney Soccer Showcase Qualifier, Sept. 1-3. This event is the precursor to the prestigious Disney Soccer Showcase events later this year, nationally regarded as the top youth soccer tournament in the country, attracting hundreds of college coaches looking for top recruits. Sixty years ago, the Fire Engine made its first journey down Main Street, U.S.A. Let’s take a ride down memory lane to hear the story behind one of Disneyland Resort’s most beloved classic vehicles. To start, here are five fun facts about the Fire Engine: It made its debut in 1958 as the last addition to Disneyland park’s classic vehicle fleet. The vehicle is not licensed to drive on public streets, so it is exclusive to the Disneyland Resort. Although it cruises up and down Main Street, U.S.A. at 5 miles per hour with guests in tow, the Fire Engine’s top speed is 35 miles per hour. As a true piece of beloved Disney history, the Fire Engine is kept in immaculate condition, and its details always look sparkly and new. The truck was inspired by turn-of-the-early 20th century Fire Engines, such as the 1907 Rambler and vintage LaFrance fire trucks. The Fire Engine has an incredibly rich Disney history. Now, let’s take a closer look at three important people in this vehicle’s story: Bob Gurr: The Fire Engine was designed by Bob Gurr, a legendary Imagineer with more than 100 plans for Disney attractions under his belt. Walt Disney first took notice of Bob’s passion for tools and mechanics after Bob consulted on the creation of attractions vehicles for Autopia, and the two men would go to inspire one another for years. Walt Disney: Walt himself was known to drive the Fire Engine through the park before opening to survey operations and discover opportunities for improvement. In fact, in the fall of 1966, Walt and Mickey posed on the Fire Engine in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle for what would become one of their last photos together. These photos have become iconic images of Walt, a symbol of the magical legacy he left behind. Steve Finley: It’s nearly impossible to talk about the Fire Engine without mentioning longtime attraction host Steven “Steve” Finley. Steve got his start at the Disneyland Resort in 1973 working at Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant, and has served as beloved driver of the Fire Engine for the past 40 years. Nowadays, he can often be found handing out stickers to young riders or sounding the Fire Engine’s immediately recognizable horn.
