November marks 90 years of fun (and “oh boys!”) courtesy of Mickey Mouse — and the Walt Disney Company is celebrating the main mouse with a two-hour prime-time television event on November 4! It is appropriately named Mickey’s 90th Spectacular — and we got a sneak peek when we attended the taping this weekend! Mickey’s 90th Spectacular! Mickey’s 90th Spectacular filmed in southern California recently, and the DFB was invited to attend. You know our Disneyland correspondent Heather (@DiningInDisney!) was all over that. And when we say she was all over it, well, just look: Mickey’s 90th Spectacular! Yup, Heather and her bestie Gail (always up for a costume party) slayed the fashion game from ears to toe! Before attendees were asked to put away their phones, Heather was able to get us a quick peek at the stage and the overall styling of the television special. Mickey’s 90th Spectacular! Of course Mickey Mouse was in attendance and had a seat of honor right on the side of the stage! Mickey’s 90th Spectacular! And just like Heather and Gail, Mickey was dressed to the nines. Mickey’s 90th Spectacular airs on ABC on November 4 during prime time and will feature tributes and entertainment from Kristen Bell, Josh Groban, Sarah Hyland, Bob Iger, NCT 127, and MORE! It was a long wait, but the doors finally opened on the much anticipated Centertown Market, Banana Cabana, and Sebastian’s Bistro at Disney World’s Caribbean Beach Resort this week. We were there on opening day to check out what’s new, get the vibe, and, of course, try the new food and drinks available at these locations! Centertown Market sign Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort has been undergoing a long refurbishment that includes the addition of the new Skyliner system as well as a complete makeover of their dining locations and more. We tried Banana Cabana for drinks and apps, and Sebastian’s for lunch, then we were on to dinner at Centertown Market. Atmosphere Centertown Market is this resort’s quick-service/counter-service location. It is set up to resemble a street market in the Islands. We definitely got the Island feel the moment we walked in and under the thatched roof decorated with colorful glass lamps. Check out our full first look and photos from this location! Caribbean Beach Resort’s Centertown Market We really enjoyed the sea-glass green accents, returning shutters, and light arrangements. It felt eclectic and relaxed — just how we want to feel on an escape to the Caribbean! Caribbean Beach Resort’s Centertown Market If you want to eat outside, head out to the covered deck area. This is where we chose to eat and loved the open air atmosphere. Eats The dinner menu offers a wide range of options. Plus, we are pleased to see quite a few vegan and vegetarian friendly options on the standard menu. Centertown Market Dinner Menu After deciding what to order we went to the central ordering location under the thatch tree. Unlike other resort food court locations, guests place their entire order at this location (not at individual stations) and receive a pager. Dinner is then delivered to the guest by cast members (this is the Be Our Guest style of meal delivery). Note that for breakfast at Centertown, guests pick up their own meals. Caribbean Beach Resort’s Centertown Market We spotted the dinner delivery carts by the windows used for picking up your breakfast in the morning. Centertown Market Dinner Delivery Carts Centertown Market Dinner Delivery Carts After placing their orders, guests collect their condiments and drinks, and then choose a table. Guests place their tracker on the table, and wait for dinner to be delivered. We did notice there were utensils on the delivery carts as well. Centertown Market Dinner Delivery System It wasn’t long before our dinner was being delivered in the cart. Centertown Market Dinner Delivery We selected the Rotisserie Chicken Alfredo, a Make-Your-Own Bowl with Banana Leaf Wrapped-Fish, and the Kids’ Tacos with Beef and Chipotle Seitan. Centertown Market First up was the Make-Your-Own Bowl. Guests can choose each element of the dish — the base, protein, and sauces. We started with a base of Brown Rice and Red Beans, Chimichurri Sauce, and the Banana Leaf Wrapped-Fish. Banana Leaf Wrapped Fish Bowl We really had high hopes for this dish as this is one of the unique specialties of this quick-service location. However, this proved to be slightly disappointing. Banana Leaf Wrapped Fish Bowl We found the fish soggy, unappetizing, and low on flavor. It was really disappointing. Banana Leaf Wrapped Fish Bowl On the other hand, we did enjoy all the other elements of this dish. The chimichurri sauce was the standout; it has a really nice peppery flavor to it. The next time we make our own bowl here we will definitely choose a different protein, but would stick with the chimichurri sauce for sure. Banana Leaf Wrapped Fish Bowl Next up was the Rotisserie Chicken Alfredo with Cavatappi. This is served with two “breadsticks” as well. Rotisserie Chicken Alfredo with Cavatappi Breadsticks We enjoyed this dish and found the chicken to have one of the best flavors of all the meats we tried (it’s a close tie between this chicken and the kids’ taco beef).The pasta was fine, the chicken is the winner in this dish though. Rotisserie Chicken Alfredo with Cavatappi Our last dish was the Kids’ Tacos. We chose the Beef and the Chipotle Seitan with Pickled Vegetable Slaw for our taco fillings. These are served with Cilantro-Lime Crema, Cotija Cheese, and Pico de Gallo. Kids’ Tacos We really loved the beef — it could be our favorite dish of the meal. It made for a very flavorful and tasty taco we could see ourselves ordering again. Kids’ Tacos Unlike the Beef, we didn’t like the Chipotle Seitan at all. It has a strange texture to it that we just didn’t enjoy. Head’s up, it also carries a spice to it that some kiddos might not like or find too strong. Kids’ Tacos The Tacos are served with fresh Pico de Gallo and Yucca and Plantain chips. Kids’ Tacos Pico de Gallo These chips are quite tasty! Overall this kids’ dish has a nice portion size and offers a twist on the standard kids’ meal. Kids’ Yucca and Plantain Chips Nosh or Not You’ll want to visit Centertown Market if: You’re looking for a change up in the standard quick-service/counter-service options and food at other resorts and park locations You’re looking for some unique vegan and vegetarian dishes You want to explore and check out all of the updates and changes made to the Caribbean Beach Resort You’ll want to pass by Centertown Market if: You or your kiddos don’t like spiced, seasoned food with a twist — think jerk sauce, Yucca chips, Chipotle spice… You’re looking for a quick burger, hot dog, or chicken sandwich. You can find that here, it will just have a twist to it (see above) Getting to Caribbean Beach Resort is not convenient or easy for you Overall This meal kind of fell flat for us. For sure we would be making some changes to our choices for the Make-Your-Own Bowl and fillings on the Kids’ Tacos. But overall we just felt that the dishes were missing the target a little too often. We’ll return again to try out other options and see how the menu develops over time at this new location. The 2018 Swan and Dolphin Food and Wine Classic will take place on Friday, October 26, and Saturday, October 27, 2018. And this event — which will mark its 9th anniversary this year — is one of my absolute annual favorites! The Causeway at the Swan and Dolphin Classic This two-night fall event coincides with the 2018 Epcot Food and Wine Festival and includes The Causeway (which features more than 90 food and beverage stations with dishes from the resort’s 17 restaurants and lounges as well as more than 30 wineries) and four special food areas — Carnival Corner, Beer Garden, Chinatown, and NEW for 2018, The Pig & Poke — along with Educational Seminars. And this week, we attended a Preview Event to see what’s in store, and let you know what you’ve just GOT to eat on the Causeway this year at the Classic! Causeway Preview First up, from Cib’s Smokehouse is roasted and smoked Iberico pork, fennel puree, honey caramelized apple, and buttered turnip. Cib’s Smokehouse Cib’s Smokehouse This is a terrific, hearty — but still beautiful! — dish! Roasted Smoked Iberico Pork From celebrity chef Todd English’s bluezoo comes a lobster roll — done in his customarily modern way! Todd English’s Bluezoo Station Bluezoo It showcases butter poached Maine lobster, lemon aioli, and frisee on a toasted brioche bun. Super rich. It’s another great play on textures, and the fresh fish and avocado relish were really light and flavorful. Before the renovations, Calypso Trading Post was a bit outdated with bright contrasting colors and patterns. Check out Calypso Trading Post’s sleek new island-inspired look! Calypso Trading Post entrance The decor is simple and rustic but still gives off a laid-back tropical vibe – LOVE the stacked crates and tall shuttered doors! Storytellers Cafe in Disneyland’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa is changing up its menu for lunch and dinner starting this week! Storytellers Cafe Beginning October 10, the a la carte options for lunch and dinner will no longer be available, making room for a buffet brunch and buffet dinner instead. Storytellers Cafe is home to the new Mickey’s Tales of Adventure Breakfast Buffet — and this will still be available for breakfast. Starting October 10, guests at lunch will enjoy Mickey’s Tales of Adventure Brunch Buffet complete with characters! Mickey’s Tales of Adventure with… Mickey! In hiking gear! The breakfast and brunch buffet will be served from 7:00 AM until 2:00 PM each day, while the dinner buffet will be served from 4:30 PM until 11:00 PM. We’re coming at you from the brand new Sebastian’s Bistro in Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort! Learn About: Sebastian's Bistro Disney World Restaurants Named and themed after Sebastian from The Little Mermaid, Sebastian’s Bistro has replaced Shutters as the table service restaurant in Disney World’s Caribbean Beach Resort. This new table service restaurant was created with “island hospitality” in mind in keeping with the theme of the refurbished Moderate Resort. You’ll find Sebastian’s Bistro in Old Port Royale at the Resort, where you’ll also find the Banana Cabana bar and Centertown Market quick service plus grab-and-go. But for now, it’s time to turn our attention to Sebastian… because in our favorite crab’s own words, “Life under the sea is better than anything they got up there!” Sebastian’s Bistro sign Atmosphere Yep, we’re talking about “life under the sea” because nautical elements are key to the atmosphere at Sebastian’s Bistro. It starts with the waterfront position of the restaurant facing Barefoot Bay, the lake which the entirety of the Resort surrounds. You’ll find the Bistro right next door to the newly revamped Banana Cabana. Sebastian’s Bistro Blues and greens provide the outer palette. Sebastian’s Bistro A short, cheerful walkway invites you inside. Facing the entrance Upon entering, you’ll find the check-in area enhanced with hand-painted beading placed in the background. Check-in area And stepping in further, that’s when you’ll really get to experience some of those “under the sea” vibes! Hello from Sebastian! “Just look at the world around you” and take in some of the theming, with pops of various shades of blue throughout the well-lit space. Our first visit was for lunch, but Appetizers are similar to what you will find at dinner. (You’ll also find all of these options at Banana Cabana, where we had the Marauders Snack, the Conch Fritters, and the Caribbean Pull-Apart Rolls.) See our review of Banana Cabana’s appetizers and drinks here! Appetizers Lunch offers an array of Sandwiches, including two vegan options. Sandwiches The Island Curry “Eggless” Salad Sandwich, for instance, is a scrambled tofu that’s whipped to give the consistency of eggs. It’s topped with apple slices, squash, and a vegan mayo. You’ll also find Lunch Mains, including the Grilled Skirt Steak “Chimichurri” which is also served during dinner. Lunch Mains Menu We’ll include the Dessert menu a little bit later. But in the meantime, here’s a look at the Specialty Cocktails. Cocktail Menu And some “mocktails” and other non-alcoholic beverages, while we’re at it! Non-alcoholic beverages Other choices include beer, wine, and — what else? — rum! Drink Menu Wine Menu For starters, we chose the Jamaican Meat Pies and the Crab Cake. Crab Cake and Jamaican Meat Pies Appetizers The Crab Cake is plated with a watercress salad and spicy herb mayonnaise. Crab Cake The crab cake is totally packed with crab meat with very little in the way of filler, so it has a very naturally rich flavor. Crab Cake The accompanying spicy herb mayonnaise was a pleasant surprise, too. It has a tasty pickle acidity and carries a decent kick. The Jamaican Meat Pies are served with Guajilo chili sauce for dipping. Jamaican Meat Pies These weren’t as memorable as the crab cake, but they were nicely seasoned and not too greasy. Jamaican Meat Pies The Crab Cake-Topped Burger from the Sandwich options is further topped with lettuce, tomato, and horseradish mayo, with some onion and pickle plated on the side. Crab Cake-Topped Burger and Sweet Potato Fries Red onion and pickle on the side Any sandwich comes with your choice of French Fries, Jicama Slaw, or — our choice — some yummy Sweet Potato Fries. Sweet Potato Fries Let’s start with the good news about the Crab Cake-Topped Burger… Crab Cake-Topped Burger The Crab Cake itself was, once again, great! But the burger itself wasn’t very well-seasoned — pretty much all the flavor came from the crab cake. That said, at least the burger wasn’t cooked to oblivion! Crab Cake-Topped Burger So, I’d say if you really want the Crab Cake here, just go for it as the appetizer. From the Lunch Mains we went with the Jerk Chicken Salad. Jerk Chicken Salad The veggies of the salad were pretty much what you’d expect — your basic mixed greens. Also in the mix were black beans, avocado, and pumpkin seeds for some texture variety. The jerk chicken itself was terrific — not overdone or chewy — and with a good mix of spice. Jerk Chicken The dish is topped with a cilantro-lime vinaigrette, but the cilantro wasn’t at all pronounced. The lime, on the other hand, was definitely the stronger flavor and it went wonderfully with the chicken. Jerk Chicken Salad And for dessert? Dessert Menu We chose Mile Marker Zero! Mile Marker Zero These chocolate-covered iced key lime pops are dusted with sea salt and plated with a tropical fruit sauce. Mile Marker Zero Not only is this dessert fun, it’s also super tasty — like, surprisingly so. Just look inside! Mile Marker Zero Tart, sweet, and rich — it’s a great treat. And while the tropical fruit sauce was good even on its own, I didn’t think the plate really needed it. It was a really nice ending to our first visit to Sebastian’s Bistro. Nosh or Not? You’ll want to visit Sebastian’s Bistro if: You’d love to check out the newly refurbished Caribbean Beach Resort and having an Advance Dining Reservation here gives you a great reason to do exactly that! You’re a guest at Caribbean Beach Resort and want a bit of a cozy, relaxing respite within the Resort’s main area. You’re drawn to the new menu and some its more unique offerings, like the vegan dishes or fun desserts. You’ll want to pass by Sebastian’s Bistro if: You’re spending a lot of time at the newly redesigned Banana Cabana (can’t say we blame you!) and you know you can grab the full Sebastian’s menu there, if you’d like. Caribbean Beach Resort is simply not a convenient destination during your Disney World trip. Overall I really think Sebastian’s Bistro is a nice addition to the impressive renovations that have taken place at Caribbean Beach Resort. The look and feel of the place is much more pleasing that its predecessor, Shutters. However, I can’t say I would go out of my way to dine here if I wasn’t staying at the resort. That said, I still think it’s a great option for the Resort’s guests due to its more unique and thoughtful menu and pleasing atmosphere. Welcome back to the Banana Cabana!! Learn About: Banana Cabana Pool Bar Disney World Restaurants This watering hole in Disney World’s Caribbean Beach Resort has been a well-loved bar for many years. Personable bartenders, cold drinks, and close proximity to the Fuentes del Morro pool always made Banana Cabana a welcome and relaxing oasis. Caribbean Beach Resort, however, began a massive Resort-wide refurbishment (or, in Disney terms, a “reimagineering”!) last year. And Banana Cabana — along with the Resort’s table service and quick service dining options — was closed for a reimagining of its own. Banana Cabana And, as you’ll soon see, it’s received quite the treatment. It’s basically been transformed into an entirely new space! So we couldn’t be more excited to see — and say “Welcome back!” to — the newly reopened Banana Cabana Pool Bar! Atmosphere Banana Cabana, which was previously located directly next to the resort’s main pool, is now tucked next to the new Sebastian’s Bistro in Old Port Royale. Banana Cabana The change is immediately striking. Banana Cabana was previously a setup of a simple bar surrounded by stools with tables and umbrellas surrounding it. And while it was a fun place to sit and chat for a while, it was much more about keeping guests right by the pool. (Check out the old look here.) Banana Cabana The new Banana Cabana has a more all-encompassing feel meant to provide an experience all its own. The three-walled space invites guests in to stay and linger awhile, even within the hubbub of the Resort’s main area. Banana Cabana The wide open entrance allows for plenty of light to flow in throughout the day, while fun lighting accents add to the charm in the evening. Banana Cabana We love the steel drum light fixture hanging from the ceiling. Banana Cabana Banana Cabana The assortment of seating gives this space a cool, homey, welcoming and laid back feeling — perfect for vacation and imagining time in the islands! That hanging couch is my new house by the way. Banana Cabana Banana Cabana Drinks The Banana Cabana Menu includes drinks and food — and we were pleasantly surprised to learn you can order off the Sebastian’s Menu from the bar during lunch and dinner hours! Specialty cocktails include a Frosé, Bourbon Breeze, Poolside Iced Tea, and of course, a Banana Cabana! Banana Cabana Menu There is also a wide variety of island themed featured cocktails making decision making here a very difficult task! Banana Cabana Menu After reading the menu we decided to try the returning Banana Cabana (we couldn’t resist that one — see our previous look at it here) and the Pink Guava Colada. Banana Cabana Pink Guava Colada and Banana Cabana The Pink Guava Colada is made with guava infused rum and Disney’s own new Select Single Barrel Rum, all blended together with guava and then mixed with Cream of Coconut and Pineapple Juice. This was smooth and sweet. We really loved this one. If you’re wondering about the sweetness, don’t be, it is sweet, but not too saccharine like some blended drinks can get. The Banana Cabana is made with Mango Rum, Coconut Rum, Creme de Banana, Orange Juice, Pineapple Juice, and Grenadine. If that isn’t the Caribbean in a cup we don’t know what is! This is definitely a pool drink that is strong in flavor (and alcohol). There is an interesting and unique spice that comes through in the aftertaste making this a fun drink that matches the new atmosphere of the Banana Cabana. If you’re stumped on choosing just one drink, you can go with three rums in the rum flight! Banana Cabana Menu Banana Cabana has a lot to choose from for those looking for a non-alcoholic drink as well. Banana Cabana Menu Eats We’re really impressed with the amount of and variety of appetizers. Plus, you can order off the Sebastian’s Bistro menu during lunch and dinner hours if you’re looking for a meal in this relaxed atmosphere during lunch and dinner. Banana Cabana Menu We decided to try the Conch Fritters, Caribbean Pull-Apart Rolls and the Marauders Snack. All of these items are also available at Sebastian’s Bistro on their appetizer menu as well. The Conch Fritters have a great breading on them that really help pronounce the conch flavor in these fritters. We would liken them to grown up hush puppies! The chili-mayonnaise dipping sauce added more tang than heat to the dish. These are a great option. Banana Cabana Conch Fritters The Marauders Snack includes Tostones, Arepas, and House-made Crackers along with three dipping sauces — Black Bean Hummus, Guacamole, and Pico de Gallo. The Black Bean Hummus has a kick to it with some spice and is the standout of the three dips. The Guac is pretty standard, and we found the Pico de Gallo was very fresh. Overall we thought this was small for the price, and we wouldn’t rush to order this again. Banana Cabana Marauders Snack The Caribbean Pull-Apart Bread is a healthy serving of four of pull-apart rolls with Guava Butter, Mango Chutney, and Jamaican Jerk Oil. The Chutney and Jerk Oil were kind of forgettable for us, but that Guava Butter — awesome. It is mildly sweet, and extremely addictive. They should sell this in the gift shop! Banana Cabana Caribbean Pull-Apart Bread Overall We love the vibe, look, and overall feel of this new location. While I adored the old Banana Cabana, this new incarnation is a stand-alone lounge that really benefits the guests of Caribbean Beach Resort. Finally. Even though this is a moderately-priced resort, Banana Cabana would be welcome at any Deluxe resort pool for sure. The menu options are diverse and fun, even if they’re not all home runs. And I love that you can order from the Sebastian’s menu here — that’s well in line with the “pool bar as eatery” vibe we’re getting from places like Geyser Point at Wilderness Lodge and Cabanas at the Swan and Dolphin. I, personally, love it. The drinks are fun, island drinks that we would love to have sitting in the Banana Cabana or poolside. I’m glad we still have a few signature items here as well. It was worth the wait during the refurb to be rewarded with this new location. We can see ourselves kicking back and enjoying a drink and a few apps here frequently. Caribbean Beach Resort’s Centertown Market And it’s been a long time coming. The lengthy refurbishment of Caribbean Beach Resort has spanned the hotel’s property, and has happily resulted in a new table service option, Sebastian’s Bistro, and entirely revamped Banana Cabana (along with refurbishments to the Resort outside of dining). And though temporary dining options were put into place, the absence of a central Counter Service option for the Resort’s guests felt like the biggest missing piece during the refurb. Caribbean Beach Resort’s Centertown Market But that’s all over now that Centertown Market is welcoming guests again! Atmosphere Centertown Market has been expanded with the goal of providing an “indoor street market vibe.” And you can perceive the changes immediately upon stepping inside. Check out this “bringing the outside in” thatched umbrella-esque ceiling set with colorful glass light fixtures. There are Island accents all over, which is one of our favorite things about this resort! But the colors are more muted and the atmosphere is a little more refined, to be sure. They have also incorporated the Resort check-in and concierge into this location, which makes a HUGE difference compared to having check-in and concierge in an entirely separate — not really even accessible by walking — building. The Calypso Market is still here as well, and we’ll have a first look of that location later today! Having everything together just adds to the convenience factor.
