Four meetings of the various subcommittees for Florida’s Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force took place today, with more scheduled throughout the rest of the week. As Orange County is one of two counties in which Walt Disney World resides (the other being Osceola County), we’ve been staying tuned to the conversations surrounding the reopening of businesses in Orange County. Walt Disney World’s Epcot Committee members discuss a diverse group of issues, concerns, and potential guidelines for a wide range of business operations. Here, we’re sharing a few items from today’s meetings, particularly with regards to the area’s theme parks — including Walt Disney World — which are currently closed to promote safety amidst the global health situation. Earlier today we focused on the ongoing discussions surrounding the reopening of the theme parks (as there are representatives on the Task Force from Disney, Universal Orlando Resort, and SeaWorld), which was one topic discussed among the Reopening Working Group. Spaceship Earth Queue “When will the parks reopen?” is the big question from those of us who are theme park fans. And while there is no specific answer — or even timeline — for that question yet, today’s discussion involved WHO might determine the whens-and-hows of reopening the theme parks. The meeting included a proposal that the theme parks (and other unique venues and associations like Orlando City Soccer and Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center) might best be suited to determine their own reopening timelines and procedures, based largely on their record of putting the safety of their guests and employees as their top priority. Hollywood Boulevard in Disney’s Hollywood Studios Though this is a conversation that will continue and no specific guidelines or decisions are in place yet, you can read about that discussion in further detail here. Another subcommittee meeting that took place today which we took particular interest in was the “Working Group for Bringing Back Tourism.” And a common thread between the two meetings seems to be a shared confidence in the theme parks, both from a business perspective (as shared above), and from a tourism-focused (or guest) perspective. “Discover the Magic” sign at Orlando International Aiport Phil Brown of Orlando International Airport shared that while much of the return of tourism will begin with visitors who drive to Florida, he stressed that what will really bring guests back to Florida is, of course, the reopening of the theme parks. He also noted that the airports should work in cooperation with the theme parks to instill confidence in guests. (You can read more about what your future trip to a Florida airport might look like here.) Magic of Disney in Orlando International Airport President & CEO of Visit Orlando, George Aguel serves as one of two co-chairs for the Task Force, and shared that next year is already looking strong for Orlando tourism, and noted the need to maintain health and safety balanced with business recovery. Part of the path towards that recovery includes reminding visitors of the emotional connection they have to Orlando that they may not have for anywhere else. And, if we may add a little commentary of our own, that’s something a lot of us can likely agree on. Happily Ever After in Magic Kingdom These conversations are shared for the public on Orange TV. And you can read more about how the global situation is currently affecting Disney parks around the world by clicking any of the links below. Are you keeping up with the conversations about the Orlando theme parks and their reopenings? Please let us know with a comment. As the global health crisis continues, a lot of aspects of the tourism industry have been pretty touch and go. Disney Cruise Line Perhaps one of the most affected types of travel has been cruise ships. Disney Cruise Line has been taking it day by day in deciding when to further sailing cancellations. A few days ago, there was an extension for suspensions across the whole cruise line and now the Disney is extending an offer to guests originally scheduled on one of the canceled sailings and who chose to move their sail date previously. Disney’s policy for canceled sailings has thus far been that those affected will receive a 125% cruise credit for use on a future cruise within 15 months of their original sail date or a full refund. Guests who have concerns about their upcoming cruises have also been given the option to move their sail date without change fees. ©Disney Guests who opted to move their cruise before cancellations may be concerned that they will miss out on the 25% cruise credit, but now Disney Cruise Line has adapted their policy to extend the additional future cruise credit of 25% to guests who were ORIGINALLY scheduled to sail on the Disney Dream or Disney Fantasy between May 17th and June 18th or on the Disney Magic from June 7th to July 2nd as those sailings have now been canceled. Disney Cruise According to the updated policy, “Once the modified reservation is paid in full, any remaining future cruise credit will be applied to their shipboard account as a non-refundable onboard credit. If the guests’ circumstances have changed and they would now like to cancel the reservation they modified, they may do so for a full refund of the original voyage fare they paid.” If this offer applies to you, you may book online or reach out to the DCL Reservation team id you need to. To do so, call 1-866-325-2112 or 407-566-3510. Click here to learn more about the most recent round of cruise cancellations. Were you set to cruise this summer? Share your story in the comments! If you followed along with some of yesterday’s conversations by Florida’s Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force, you may recall that discussions addressed the reopening of various businesses around the county, including the area’s theme parks in light of the current closures due to the global situation. (And, if you missed it, you can catch up on some of yesterday’s meetings here.) Florida-themed Orange Bird Mural in Disney Springs Orange County is one of two in which Walt Disney World Resort resides, along with Osceola county. And while the discussions surrounding the reopening of Orange County businesses is still in beginning stages, the ongoing meetings deliver insights into all the various items that need to be considered for reopening safely. As one part of this morning’s meeting, the subcommittee under the heading of “Guidelines for Reopening Working Group” followed up on the conversation surrounding theme parks from yesterday. While a “working draft” of recommended guidelines was presented, it was emphasized and clarified as a “starting point” for potential procedures. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Recognizing that theme parks operate under a very unique business model, it was stated that Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, and SeaWorld are “the experts.” Monorail passing through Disney World’s Epcot And to that end, Unicorp National Development president Chuck Whittall today proposed the following language to Mayor Jerry Demings: “Theme parks and other venues of that magnitude shall each develop their own specific and unique set of guidelines following CDC recommendations and using best practices that will protect the life, health, and safety of their employees and guests. They will be permitted to open at their own discretion with their internally determined level of safe capacities throughout the various spaces.” Magic Kingdom Park Entrance Mayor Jerry Demings seemed to agree, essentially, in spirit with the theme parks reopening under there own discretion, recognizing that the proposed language was good; however, he also added that the “bright minds on the call need to kick it around a bit just to make sure that there aren’t any unintended consequences.” So, as you can see, these discussions are still in progress, and this is still very much a developing story. But those involved have already spoken to their confidence surrounding the theme parks, and the ability of these unique venues to proceed in a way that keeps the safety of the guest as the “top priority.” Hand sanitizer station in Disney World Disney Senior Vice President of Resort & Transportation Operations Thomas Mazloum is a member of the Task Force (representatives from Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld are serving as well). He addressed the group later in the meeting, sharing that all businesses involved “have the same common goal… health and safety for our guests and for our employees; we want to have a confidence back that this is a safe place to be.” “Wild About Safety” Cards This led into a recommendation that “the structured phases should really be based on the public health measures needed to ensure a safe and healthy environment for guests and workers safety rather than perhaps the specific type of business or service.” (Essentially, that reopening should be based on the ability of the business to “innovate” and adapt to health and safety guidelines, as opposed to the type of business). As mentioned, this is a developing story, and we will continue to keep you posted on the discussions on the path to the reopening of Florida. In the meantime, you can learn more about the current status of the area’s theme parks (as well as Disney parks around the globe) by visiting the links provided below. To all who make wishes and to those who make wishes come true — Happy World Wish Day! On April 29, 1980, Make-A-Wish was founded upon the inspirational story of Chris Greicius, a young boy who dreamt of being a police officer. Since that day, Make-A-Wish has grown into a global organization and granted nearly half a million wishes worldwide. These special moments have touched the hearts of so many people over the years, leaving a lifelong impact on both the wish child and the roughly 200 people it takes to make every wish come true. Today also marks the 40th anniversary of Disney’s relationship with Make-A-Wish, as Disneyland Resort was part of the first ‘official’ wish for a boy named Frank “Bopsy” Salazar. Disney and Make-A-Wish have worked together to make over 140,000 wishes come true around the globe. Every one of them is special to us, and a chance to celebrate the hope, courage, and perseverance of the amazing children at the heart of every wish experience. Today, we also celebrate the organization that helps make those wishes come true. So from all of us here at Disney – Happy Anniversary, Make-A-Wish! Here’s to 40 more years of making extraordinary wishes come true together. View the full article

Who out there is guilty of looking around during Zoom calls and spying on what your co-workers got goin’ on in their houses? Just us? Disney Attraction Posters Yes, it’s true! We’re totally guilty of doing this! But if we’ve learned anything new about our team members over the last few weeks, it’s that many of us have some pretty cool Disney stuff in our houses! That’s why we’re rebooting the series and inviting y’all inside with this edition of DFB Cribs! First off, we’ve been admiring the lovely attraction posters in the background of this co-worker’s at-home office for quite a while now! We can’t tell if they’re real or replicas, but we’ll be bringing a jeweler’s loupe for a closer inspection next time she has us over! Disney Attraction Posters But we know this next piece of Disney history is REAL THING — it’s a 1965 Tencennial original map of Disneyland, beautifully framed and presented in AJ’s home! Disneyland Map And it’s lovingly displayed next to two of Disneyland’s original paper popcorn boxes that her dad gave her! Believe it or not, Disneyland has just recently brought this design back into production! Original Disneyland Popcorn Box One of our editors got these super-futuristic mirror-finish Epcot Mugs from the park’s opening from her dad too! Looks like good taste (and Disney) runs in her family! Epcot Mugs Ahhh! There’s just something special about picking up a new souvenir coffee mug each time you visit Disney World! This writer has been going to Disney World a LOT lately by the looks of it! I think many of us can relate to her Disney mug-buying habit! Disney Mugs In fact, Disney drinkware seemed to be a popular preoccupation with our team! Here are some vintage plastic Disney World cups from one of our reporter’s kitchens (another writer remembered having these as a kid!). Vintage Plastic Cups And I’ve been collecting these Pinocchio juice glasses from the 1940s for the last few years! All I’m missing now is Gepetto! Pinocchio Glasses We have a bunch of Disney vinyl collectors on our staff too! Check out this editor’s collection of Disney tunes! Disney Record Collection And of course, our lovely reporter’s collection of 45s was equally impressive too! Disney Record Collection She also has a special place in her heart for Annette Funicello, one of the Mickey Mouse Club’s original Mouseketeers! Annette Collection And how cool are these old Mickey band-aids and this travel sewing kit?! Some of us are old enough to actually remember using this stuff back in the day! (Duffy! Is that YOU?!) Vintage Disney Band-Aids and Sewing Kit We’re a little envious of this writer’s collection of Disney Snowglobes! Each one is so detailed, she can pick one up and magically be transported to the Disney parks in no time! Snowglobes And speaking of globes, I picked up this super-rare Rand McNally tin globe at a toy show a few years ago! Vintage Disneyland Tin Globe It was actually part of an old board game, but the pieces are long gone! They’re even harder to find than the globe itself, which dates back to the 1950s! Vintage Disneyland Tin Globe I was also lucky enough to snag this old Disneyland TV Tray which actually pre-dates Disneyland! As you can see, a lot of the lands aren’t filled in because they didn’t even know what the park was going to look like yet! Disneyland TV Tray Walt Disney was a lover of trains! In fact, he loved trains so much he even had one called the Carolwood Pacific Railroad which ran through his backyard! Check out this awesome railroad spike this team member has from Walt Disney World’s Railroad! Such a cool piece of Disney history to own! WDWRR Spike And here’s another unusual item one of our writers actually thrifted! She said sometimes when Disney World redecorates their hotel rooms, they donate their old decor to resell shops nearby. That’s where she scored a couple of the old lamps from Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge! We’re going shopping with you next time we come down there, girl! Animal Kingdom Lodge Lamp She also has this room number plaque posted outside her bedroom! She thinks it’s from either Disney’s Beach Club or possibly Disney’s Port Orleans Resort before they renovated! Room Number Plaque And check out this rad black and white photograph one writer has in her home! It’s signed by all the members of the Fab Five! Autographed Photo We didn’t know one of our writers was quite this much of a Star Wars or LEGO fan until we saw THIS! You think you know a person and then they lay a MASSIVE Star Wars LEGO collection on ya! Star Wars LEGO Collection But embarrassingly enough, that’s probably about how much I’ve spent on Tsum Tsums over the years! Tsum Tsum Collection Some members of our staff are more into MAKING cool Disney stuff than buying cool Disney stuff! Check out the cool Haunted Mansion “Donald Duck” chair and Stretching Room portrait one of our editors fabricated with her husband (cat not included!). Haunted Mansion Decor In fact, she’s quite the unique neighbor to have next door! For Halloween this year she and her husband made their own life-sized Madame Leota Tombstone and her EYES EVEN MOVE! Madame Leota Tombstone She also made the creepy fountain from Halloweentown in The Nightmare Before Christmas! Not pictured is it lighting up green with water and smoke coming out of it. Is there anything this talented lady can’t DO??? Fountain from Nightmare Before Christmas We could go on and on with more Disney stuff, but by the time we get through all the collections of stuff we’ve amassed, we’ll no longer be isolating! We hope you’ve enjoyed this episode of DFB Cribs! Until next time, friends! What Disney items have you made or collected? Tell us in the comments below! While both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort remain closed until further notice due to the current global health situation, both home states for the Resorts are looking at safe reopenings for their economies. Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle We have been following along with the Re-Open Florida Task Force and Florida’s Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force, especially with regards to discussions that touch on the path to reopening Walt Disney World. In California — where Anaheim, of course, is home to Disneyland Resort — Governor Gavin Newsom is also laying out plans for the state’s businesses. The Orange County Register reports that Governor Newsom — together with California Department of Public Health Director Dr. Sonia Angell — presented a “four-stage road map” for California’s reopening. Disney California Adventure Main Entrance — Closed It is important to note, as mentioned in The Orange County Register, that “Newsom did not explicitly mention theme parks in his four-stage plan.” However, the article discusses each of the four stages of reopening, and where the state’s theme parks potentially fit. Stage 1 reflects the current stage for California as stay-at-home orders remain in place. Stage 2, which is quoted in the article as “weeks” away, would permit “Lower Risk” places of work including retail, offices, and schools to reopen “with adaptions.” World of Disney in Disneyland Resort Stage 3, which may be “months” away, would include the reopening of businesses and gatherings classified as “Higher Risk” where close contact is likely to occur. Examples include gyms, theaters, and salons as well as church services (including events like weddings). Again, the phrase “with adaptions” was shared with regards to these types of businesses. California Food and Wine Festival entertainment stage Stage 4 would see the reopening of events classified as “Highest Risk,” including concerts and live audience sports among the examples. Dr. Angell is noted as sharing that entering Stage 4 would require therapeutics (which do not currently exist). She is also quoted as saying: “This is going to be a while, but there are ways we can modify the way we move around in our environment that will make it more possible (to reopen).” Pixar Pier in Disney California Adventure A quote from the article recognizes that: “Disneyland, Universal Studios Hollywood, Knott’s Berry Farm, Six Flags Magic Mountain, SeaWorld San Diego, Legoland California and other theme parks in the state would appear to fall into Stage 4 — the last phase of the plan.” However, it was also expressed that some of the state’s theme parks “could fall into the earlier Stage 3 if they adopt substantial operational changes that promote social distancing and other health and safety measures.” You can read the entire article on The Orange County Register. With so much uncertainty at this time, it’s important to recognize and celebrate the HELPERS! We’re seeing truly incredible acts of kindness and generosity during this time. Disney has even gone out of their way to recognize those battling on the front-line, from healthcare workers to local police departments. ©Disney In addition to the incredible work done day in and day out by healthcare workers, essential employees, and first responders, there are some seriously amazing Disney Fans who have stepped up in big ways during the health crisis. We want to take a moment to recognize those who have gone above and beyond to truly help their communities during this time! Brooke! We’re kicking off our Disney fan shout-out by shining a light on Brooke Prelovsky! The owner of the online shop “Bibbidi Bobbidi Brooke” typically makes SUPER adorable Minnie Ears and MagicBand & smartwatch buttons, but in recent weeks she has shifted her efforts to sewing face masks. Photo credit: @bbbrooke_ The result has been awe-inspiring: Brooke has made and donated nearly 3,000 masks in the past few weeks alone! Her story was even covered by the local news! Photo credit: @bbbrooke_ She has even inspired our followers from around the world to follow her example. Here is a testimonial we received from @sandy.dot.b: “[bbbrooke] has inspired me to also start sewing masks. I live in Germany and now I coordinate a team of 9 colleagues across the country all sewing masks for health care professionals!” Her message to everyone: “Be kind and lead by example” Carlye! These days, it can be really easy to feel overwhelmed. Between navigating simple tasks like grocery shopping to finding ways to keep things lighthearted at home, having a reliable information resource is key! Theme park journalist Carlye Wisel has taken it upon herself to create an incredible, FREE resource guide known as her “Ultimate Bunker Resource List.” ©Carlye Wisel This doc has just about everything, from meal delivery services to sites where you can purchase non-medical cloth face masks. The guide also has fun ways to keep the Disney magic alive as well as online fitness classes, coloring sheets, and other personal resources! ©Carlye Wisel Putting a document together such as this one is a monumental task, and the fact that Carlye made it available for free is incredible! Read more about Carlye’s resource list here! Even More INCREDIBLE Disney fans! We received so many amazing suggestions from our instagram followers of Disney fans who inspire them, whether they work on the front lines or they are making masks and other supplies to assist those in need. There were simply too many to include all in one post, so we selected just a few to highlight today! First, we received this heartwarming story from @lydzoejordan on Instagram about her husband: “My husband is a paramedic working in our local Emergency Department, he hasn’t moaned once at spending all day with COVID-19 positive patients and still comes home from his shifts to care for me as we are expecting our first baby in October! His face is red, sore, and painful from the mask he has to wear but he still doesn’t complain. He gets so excited to watch new DFB videos when they’re released and we’re already planning on when to take our baby to WDW! He’s a massive fan of AJ and ‘plastic cheese’!!” Below you’ll see, as she put it, “My favourite photo of him from our last trip to WDW. Featuring his afternoon snack which I didn’t even get a looking at!” Photo credit: @lydzoejordan Another story came to us from @grace.meyne, who wanted to nominate her incredible mom: “I would like to nominate my mom Valerie! She has been an ER nurse for 20 years and is working so incredibly hard to keep our community safe here in Houston. After I tested positive for COVID-19 a few weeks ago, she had to take on even more responsibility to keep the rest of my family, including my 76 year-old grandma who lives with us, safe. Because of her meticulous planning and cleaning, everyone stayed healthy even with me in the house! She is the strongest woman I know and the biggest Disney fan out there. When a friend handmade this Mickey surgical cap for her while I was sick, she cried because she hadn’t had a moment of peace and happiness in so long. God bless all the essential workers during this time, and hopefully we can get back to Disney soon!” Photo credit: @grace.meyne We received this sweet message from @lauren02467, who wanted to give a special shout-out to her sister: “My sister Leanne is a nurse in the ER at a hospital here in Boston. She is working nonstop and saving lives, and baking treats on her downtime to give to people (curbside) to make them feel a little better amidst the crisis. She regularly checks in on everyone to see how everyone’s holding up, when she should be the one people reach out to the most at a time like this. She also signed up for the RunDisney virtual 5K challenge with me to support Disney and to also train for the WDW Marathon Weekend 2021…running separately of course!” Cinderella Castle in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom We heard from @dizney71 wishing to send a special message about @hellotifni: “[She] has been sewing up hundreds upon hundreds of masks for healthcare workers and uses the cutest Disney fabrics! She is a true hero and deserves to be recognized!” And here is an awesome story shared with us by @stephpg19 about the generous work done by @poplinebling, who is “donating thousands of 3D printed mask savers for first responders so that their ears don’t go raw from wearing masks all day long. She’s incredible and doing this mostly by herself everyday for free!” Mickey Mouse It doesn’t stop there! @ryanbucojr sent us the following message: “I’d like to nominate my girlfriend Carmela, her IG is @created.by.carmela, she recently raised $900 and will be using the money to cater food for hospitals in NYC this week. At the same time she is creating home made masks out of old clothes and every day materials and donating them as well. We are tremendous Disney fans and go every year. We will be in Magic Kingdom on Halloween day this year if all goes [according] to plan.” And here’s a heartwarming shout out sent by @cassi531_: “My best friend Lindsey Cook! She has volunteered to work directly with COVID-19 patients at her job at a local hospital. She wants this virus to be gone and she felt like it was her duty to do something to help. She has worked many hours and I am very proud of her! Lindsey also loves Disney World so that definitely makes her amazing.” Dale @abbykaintz sent us this message about her generous friend: “Hi! hope you are doing well during this difficult time! I wanted to nominate @faithtrustsawdust because she has donated supplies to make masks for healthcare workers. Her kindness resulted in over 100 masks to help those who need it right now when supplies are so difficult to obtain. She is so humble and sweet!” And here’s a special shout out sent from @kristinaclaus: “My sweet friend Marie is a nurse and not only is she doing her job she is bringing patients meals, sitting with them, and helping their families.” ©Disney @nicole_dubois sent this shout out for her incredible sister: “My sister @alisondubois97 is on the front lines working as a respiratory therapist in the ICU. She’s a hero to so many and has remained positive throughout this whole crisis. Plus this girl owns more Minnie ears than anyone I know.” We received a message about an awesome Disney fan @cloverilly, who is working on the front lines! This was sent from @artinmygarage: “She’s a doctor working on the front lines in NYC! She has been treating coronavirus patients, working non-stop. She’s a true hero!” Happily Ever After @fnrogers sent us this message about an incredible Cast Member stepping up in big ways! “Emily Lartigue is a cast member who started “cast member pantry” she has raised money to allow cast members to shop for groceries for free. She was on the local news channel!” @_abbie_tucker sent a sweet message about @yubnubshop, who “normally makes mickey ears but has switched over to making masks and is donating all money raised by them to Meals on Wheels.” Minnie Mouse @disneyboss23 gave a shout out to their mom: “My mom has been making masks and organizing them it has been very crazy we made over 1,000 masks” And we received this message from @jess91_12, who wanted to highlight the work done by @turnock_trio: “Jess is a theatre practitioner working in the UK NHS as a frontline worker and Tom is a British soldier and both crazy Disney and Disney Food Blog fans!” @laurencmeyer1 sent us the following message about another awesome Disney fan who has brought a smile to her face during this time: “@waltsfashionhouse [is a] single working mama making masks when she can. Rachel is a great great great person! Also makes the most adorable headbands for any day wear and race days! Love her!” Rapunzel! @dianagbaez84 sent us this kind message: “Thank you for this opportunity! I want to nominate @_themaskforce, a group that was started by Zomy my best friend, she took it upon herself to start sewing masks for all who needed them for FREE! Soon she received an overwhelming amount of support and now this group consists of ladies from all over Southern California uniting to make a difference and meet needs, from our frontline heroes to community alike. I’m honored to be part of this team. Together with 11+ seamstresses and coordinators we have donated 5,000 masks and counting! We had the opportunity to be at Disneyland [in] early march before its closure. Can’t wait to be back! Stay safe, Diana” The final message we are sharing today came to us from @meagan.gillean, who wanted to give a shout out to James Bickham from Jonesboro, AR: “We are dealing with quarantine and a tornado hit the city in March. He has been coordinating Operation Full Belly. Every night for 2 weeks he’s had the help of volunteers, donations and restaurants to feed the community over 2,000 free meals!” Special Characters for Party for the Planet We want to thank EACH and EVERY person who reached out to us and shared stories of loved ones who are rising to the occasion to help others during this time. We cannot emphasize enough how much your stories touched our hearts! If you want to help those working on the front lines, click here! We would like to hear about even MORE super-awesome Disney fans who have demonstrated acts of kindness and generosity during this time! Leave a comment below and give a special shout out to a Disney fan in your life who has gone above and beyond these past few weeks! If you’ve been to Disney World in the last seven years, chances are you’ve worn (or at least seen!) a MagicBand. MagicBands It can be hard to believe when you’re in Disney World and EVERYONE has one on, but did you know that the MagicBand is a SUPER advanced piece of technology? Seriously! The capabilities of these cute rubber wristbands are insane. We’re making sure you know EXACTLY what’s going on with that MagicBand on your wrist with these five surprising facts! 1. The MagicBand Was Developed IN Hollywood Studios Did you know that the technology for the MagicBand (and for MyMagic+) was developed in a lab in Disney’s Hollywood Studios? We know, it sounds crazy, but it’s true! From 2008 – 2013, a team of Imagineers set up camp in one of the Studio Backlot Tour buildings, right next to Toy Story Mania! ©D23 According to Wired, this team, sometimes called the Fab Five, was looking to create a “Magic Kingdom without turnstiles.” The idea they came up with was the paperless, cutting edge MyMagic+ system we see in use today. That took some time to develop — especially when it meant convincing Disney big-wigs like Bob Iger and (at the time) John Lasseter to okay the $1 billion project. FastPass Touchpoint So, an out-of-commission theater in the back of Hollywood Studios was transformed into the MyMagic+ lab. The outside of the building looked like any facade in the park and featured benches up against the walls for guests to use. Tens of thousands of people walked by that building without having any idea of what was going on inside — perhaps even YOU walked by! Click here to read about how MyMagic+ has impacted Disney dining! 2. MagicBands DO Track What You’re Doing In The Parks We’ve all made the joke at one time or another: Disney knows our EVERY MOVE when we’re wearing our MagicBands, don’t you think? Well, that’s not entirely true, but Disney is keeping an eye on what we’re doing when we’re in the parks. Magic Kingdom Crowds Don’t worry, MagicBands don’t have any GPS tech built-in, so Disney can’t keep an eye on you when you leave. Instead, MagicBands use two types of RFID chips. You’ve probably seen an RFID chip on your newer credit cards! These allow special RFID scanners to read one of the chips, some from a short distance (like when you tap your MagicBand to a scanner), and some from up to 40 feet away! Touch to Pay at a Counter Service Location In general, Disney uses MagicBands to see where you’re making purchases, what purchases you’re making, what you’re riding, and where you are in the park, and to make sure you receive the right photos. Ever checked My Disney Experience and seen a picture you don’t remember scanning your band to collect on Haunted Mansion or Seven Dwarfs Mine Train? They’ve tracked your MagicBand! All of this is to “enhance your experience” in the words of Disney. It’s kind of similar to how targeted ads work from reviewing your online purchases. Haunted Mansion On-ride Photo ©Disney Collecting this info allows Disney to send you that pop-up messaging in the My Disney Experience app when you’re in the parks, or even let the Cast Members at Be Our Guest Restaurant know where to deliver your food. Plus, knowing your location means that you’ll get access to a pic of YOU on Splash Mountain, and not the guy in the log in front of you. Want to learn more about how Disney is using tech to track us? Click here to watch our video! 3. MagicBands Can Last Two Years (Or More!) Yes, MagicBands do run on batteries and those batteries will eventually run out. Still, it takes a while! Your MagicBand should work for two years, and some people have reported their bands working even longer! Stitch MagicBand So, if you’re headed to Disney World within two years, you don’t need a new MagicBand! Just snag your old one and make sure it’s still linked to your account. It should work just fine to open the door of your hotel room, get you into the parks, access your FastPasses, etc. Remember that if you’d like to make purchases with your MagicBand, you’ll need to have a credit card linked to the account. Fantasia Dooney & Bourke MagicBand PLUS, when the MagicBand battery DOES die, you can still use it, just not for everything. Remember how we said the band has two RFID chips? The short-range one doesn’t need a battery to work. So, no your PhotoPass pics won’t show up and you won’t be able to use your MagicBand to have food delivered to your table; but you can still tap into the parks or your hotel room! Click here to check out why you should be planning your next Disney trip right now! 4. You Can Use Your MagicBand To Get Through Locked External Doors At Your Resort You probably know that MagicBands can be used to access your hotel room. In fact, if you use online check-in, you can even bypass the front desk and go straight to your room when you get to your resort! But, you might not have known that you can use your MagicBand to open guest accessible external doors at your resort, too. Riviera Resort Pool When you’re exploring your Disney resort, you might notice scanners on some exterior doors or pool gates. As long as you have an active reservation at that resort, you can use your MagicBand to scan these doors open. No more walking around to the unlocked front entrance after a night out at Disney Springs for you! Click here to watch our video on the BEST (and worst!) Disney World Resorts! 5. You Can Have More Than One Active MagicBand At A Time And finally, did you know you can have more than one active MagicBand at a time? In fact, there’s no limit on how many active MagicBands you can have tied to your account! Ok, maybe there IS a limit, but we haven’t found it. And we have A. LOT. OF. MAGICBANDS. So, feel free to link as many active bands to your account as you want and use whatever one you’re feeling most each Disney day. BUT — if you lose a MagicBand or would rather a MagicBand can’t be used to access your account, you can deactivate any individual MagicBands you’d like via your My Disney Experience account. If you deactivate a band, it will still be linked to your account (you can’t link a MagicBand to someone else’s account once it’s been linked to yours), but nobody will be able to use it to make purchases, get into hotel rooms, or tap into theme parks. (Believe us, we’ve deactivated MANY a lost toddler MagicBand!) You can reactivate MagicBands at any time. Slap Bracelet MagicBands There are LOTS of cool MagicBand designs to choose from, so why choose? Grab all your favorites and you’ll be able to switch your MagicBand style out as you please. We hope this helped you understand a little bit more about that colorful piece of plastic around your wrist! We take for granted how much tech goes into something so small that we use SO MUCH on our Disney World vacation. It’s actually pretty cool and advanced, don’t ya think? There are a lot of different types of food to choose from at Disney World, but choosing what your tastebuds are in the mood for is only half the battle! We’re ALWAYS in the Mood For Bread Service at Sanaa! That’s because while many foods at Disney World are delicious, they’re not all created equal! You’ll be tempted by many tasty snackortunities throughout the Disney parks, but if you can hold off just a little longer for something better, we think you’ll be much happier with the results (we know we usually are!). Here are upgrades we’ve come up with for some of Disney World’s most common snack culprits! Many are around the same cost, so why not have the VERY BEST version of something you can get on your vacation?! At least that’s our two cents! What to Avoid: Plain Old Ice Cream You’ll find ice cream at SO many locations around Disney World, but there are MANY more options than just boring vanilla and chocolate soft serve to choose from (unless you’re wild about plain soft serve, then YOU do YOU, boo!). Womp Womp If you’re at Magic Kingdom, or any of the other Disney parks, there’s probably a much better option not too far away! What to Try Instead: Dole Whip! We’re talking TONS of specialty soft-serve flavors of Dole Whip, though some can come and go from time to time. We’ve seen Pineapple, Mango, Orange, Lemon, Lime, Raspberry, Strawberry, and even Coconut! Pineapple Dole Whip Look for these more unique soft-serves in Magic Kingdom at Storybook Treats, Aloha Isle, Sunshine Tree Terrace, Auntie Gravity’s Galactic Goodies and at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort’s Pineapple Lanai! (You can also get regular pineapple Dole Whip at several other Disney resorts and at Disney Springs!) And don’t forget to use Mobile Order on the My Disney Experience app to help you breeze past the full line and get your treats FASTER. The lines for these joints tend to run a bit long! Our DFB Readers Just Voted Aloha Isle’s Pineapple Dole Whip Their #1 Snack! Ample Hills Creamery This spot located at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn has one of the best selections of ice cream on property — literally, THE BEST. You can sample everything before you make up your mind and if you STILL can’t decide, go with an Ice Cream Flight! Ice Cream Flight at Ample Hills Ample Hills Creamery is a non-Disney owned and operated chain, but their Disney World location is the only place you’ll find Sally Sells Seashells — an exclusive Disney flavor! And don’t forget the Ice Cream Tacos!! Ice Cream Taco We give it “Two scoops up!” Now, Ample Hills recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, but we’re hoping to see both their BoardWalk location and their NEW, under-construction second location in Disney Springs open back up when Disney World reopens. Click here to learn more about the Disney Springs Ample Hills location! Beaches and Cream Just a stone’s throw away from Ample Hills Creamery, you’ll find Beaches and Cream at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resort! Beaches and Cream This soda fountain-looking joint is known for cranking out a mean Kitchen Sink Sundae (that is ACTUALLY served in a SINK with more ice cream and toppings than you can shake a stick at!) along with another favorite of ours — the chocolate and peanut butter dreamboat known in these parts as the No Way Jose Sundae! No Way Jose Sundae You can’t go wrong with any of Beaches and Cream’s Extreme Milkshakes either — like the new Storm Along Shake that comes topped with its own donut life preserver! Storm Along Shake Beaches and Cream has just been newly remodeled and expanded with additional seating but due to its popularity, Advance Dining Reservations are still highly recommended! Click here to see our review of the newly reopened Beaches and Cream! Other Spots to Look For Better Stuff We have few other options we’d recommend to satisfy your ice cream cravings! First up, L’Artisan des Glaces in Epcot’s France pavilion. This spot serves delicious Ice Cream Macaron Sandwiches, which they change out with the season, along with some SERIOUSLY good house-made ice cream and sorbet! Strawberry Macaron And don’t forget the Brioche Ice Cream Sandwiches! These are house-made brioche filled with ice cream and sauce and pressed into a little panini-like pocket of wonder! Deeeelicious. L’Artisan des Glaces Pressed Brioche Ice Cream Sandwich with Pistachio Ice Cream and Raspberry Sauce We also still love Plaza Ice Cream Parlor in Magic Kingdom, and Hollywood Scoops in Hollywood Studios when we’re looking for a cup or cone of creamy, cold goodness that isn’t your run-of-the-mill soft serve! Click here to see how you can make some yummy Disney Sundaes at HOME! What to Avoid: Mega-Crowded Character Meals Since we’ve been known to recommend iconic character meals such as Chef Mickey’s, Crystal Palace, and Cinderella’s Royal Table to our readers (AND know we’re guilty of going to Chef Mickey’s most times we visit because KIDS!), we don’t want to send you any mixed messages. If characters are your goal, we totally recommend you try these spots at least once — especially if it’s your first time to Disney World — OR you already know your trip wouldn’t be the same without them! Chef Mickey’s That being said, there are some more-relaxed and (dare I say it…) more-enjoyable (and often easier to grab a reservation for!) character dining experiences out there — and you might even be surprised by how much more time you’ll get to spend with your favorite Disney character at these other spots! What to Try Instead: To get more face time with Disney characters without giving up food quality, check out one of these alternatives! Garden Grill This revolving restaurant (yes, it SPINS!) located in Epcot offers a great opportunity to meet with characters due to its smaller size! The food is brought right to your table and served family-style (so buffet). Booth — with a hidden Mickey — at Garden Grill This spot offers a great breakfast platter in the morning (with Sticky Buns!) and a platter of assorted meats and veggies for lunch and dinner. We think the food quality is really good here (all of the veggies and fruit are grown IN the Living With the Land attraction you’ll rotate past!), and you can ask for as much of it as you want! Sticky Bun Bake at Garden Grill And you get to hang out with Mickey, Pluto, Chip, and Dale clad in their farmer outfits. Farmer Mickey is the cutest But the best part about this restaurant (IMHO) is that it’s very small, so characters tend to come by your table several times during the meal. You don’t get the same “see-em-once-and-get-out” experience that you’ll find at Cinderella’s Royal Table and Chef Mickey’s. At those restaurants, we almost feel rushed since the tables are obviously seated in “waves,” and everyone has to get out so new folks can be seated for the next time the characters make the rounds. The feeling is much more relaxed and chill at Garden Grill. And that makes a huge difference during a frantic Disney vacation. Click here to see why we LOVE breakfast at Garden Grill! Tusker House You’ll get to meet Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and Daisy in safari-themed outfits at Tusker House in Disney’s Animal Kingdom! This buffet situated in the heart of the Africa section of the park and serves up breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Safari Mickey The buffet features some really unique foods including some African specialties for more-adventurous eaters! Don’t worry– there are still plenty of old standby foods including as many Corn Dog Nuggets and as much mac and cheese as you could possibly want! Click here to see when we ate breakfast AND lunch at Tusker House! Or Check Out These Character Dining Locations: Topolino’s Terrace at Disney’s Riviera Resort offers a character breakfast that costs about the same as Chef Mickey’s but has a much more chilled-out atmosphere — along with a STUNNING rooftop view! You’ll still get to spend time with Mickey, Minnie, Daisy, and Donald who are all wearing outfits inspired by different artistic disciplines! As you can see, Daisy is a ballet dancer! Topolino’s Terrace Breakfast a la Art Characters Check out our full review WITH PHOTOS of Topolino’s Terrace’s character breakfast here! Topolino’s is a plated meal (meaning it’s NOT all-you-can-eat like a buffet, which could sway your decision…so take that into consideration), and we think it looks and tastes better than many of the options at Chef Mickey’s — just don’t tell our pal Mickey that! Breakfast a la Art Entrees Trattoria al Forno’s Bon Voyage Breakfast at Disney’s BoardWalk is also another unique option. The food is served plated and it’s also not all-you-can-eat, but the vibe is generally much less hectic. Tower of Pancakes at Trattoria al Forno Not only will you get to enjoy some really yummy food, but you’ll usually get the chance to see two Disney princesses who rarely meet: Rapunzel, and Ariel (with LEGS!) AND THEIR GUYS! Flynn Rider and Prince Eric are also normally making the rounds with the ladies. Ariel This is the ONLY spot you can currently meet these two gents, so if meeting a prince or two is on your wish list, consider heading to the BoardWalk! Check out our FULL REVIEW of the Bon Voyage Breakfast at Trattoria al Forno here! The character breakfast at ‘Ohana in Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort might also be a good option for you since this one IS all-you-can-eat (and served in a big skillet like at Garden Grill!). ‘Ohana Character Breakfast It costs about the same as Topolino’s Terrace and Trattoria al Forno, but you can really load up on those Mickey Waffles before you hit the parks. Say Aloha to Mickey and Friends at ‘Ohana for Breakfast Thankfully, Magic Kingdom is only a short monorail ride away! You’ll meet Mickey, Pluto, Lilo, and Stitch at this fun breakfast as well! Read our full review of ‘Ohana’s character breakfast here! What to Avoid: Basic Cheeseburger Don’t just get a boring burger like you can get at any fast food restaurant back home — get a GOOD one! What to Try Instead: The Boathouse The Boathouse’s Gibson “Sandwich King” Burger is one of our favorite award-winning burgers at Disney World. It’s one seriously juicy, well-seasoned burger loaded with fried cherry peppers, jalapeño havarti, and spiced mayo! It’s incredible. Gibsons “Sandwich King” Burger Hop Champion You’ll likely need an Advance Dining Reservation to feast at this waterfront restaurant, but if you’re like us, once you get a taste of this thing, you’ll be rebooking this spot over and over again! OH, and don’t forget to grab those spicy firecracker shrimp, too! And the Key Lime Pie… . Click here to see why we loved the burger at The Boathouse! D-Luxe Burger Although Disney Springs’ D-Luxe Burger is a quick-service spot, you can actually order your burger cooked to the temperature you want just like at a fancy sit-down joint! Dubliner Burger D-Luxe Burger also uses a signature meat blend and offers many uniquely themed burgers. There’s usually a seasonal burger that’s changed out every few months! Our favorite is still their Pepperoni Pizza Burger (it’s SO GOOD!). Click here to see one of our favorite D-Luxe burgers, the Pepperoni Pizza Burger! Grand Floridian Cafe The Lobster Thermidor Burger at Grand Floridian Cafe is also a wonderful sammie to enjoy at Disney World! It comes fully-loaded with fresh lobster, a cheese crisp, and a rich, creamy sauce! Lobster Thermidor Burger at Grand Floridian Cafe This thing is the ultimate surf and turf indulgence! You can pop over to the Grand Floridian for lunch really easily from Magic Kingdom. Not only is the food outstanding, but the atmosphere is much more relaxed than the mid-day meal time frenzy at the parks! Click here to see why the Lobster Thermidor Burger is a “catch!” What to Avoid: Plain Old Potato Chips Yikes! We never want you to waste any of your Disney Dining Plan snack credits on ordinary stuff like bottled water, soda, or a bag of potato chips you can buy in any grocery store! In fact, we work hard on our DFB Guides to prevent such a travesty from occurring! What to Try Instead: Disney makes their own homemade potato chips and they’re waaay fresher and tastier than the prepackaged stuff! These are more like thick-cut kettle-style chips, often sprinkled generously with sea salt. Housemade Chips Look for them available as a side to get with your meal, or purchase them separately at many fast-food restaurants throughout Disney World! Many fast food locations, especially at resorts, offer these tasty chips! Here are our top snacks to get at Disney World in 2020 with your Disney Dining Plan snack credits! And if you’re looking for something even fancier than “just chips” at Disney World, there are a lot of kicked-up-a-notch options! Try the Buffalo Chicken Chips at Trilo-Bites in Disney’s Animal Kingdom or the Watchos at Rix Sports Bar in Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort (which are like nachos made with Waffle Fries instead!). Watchos at Rix Sports Bar And even Woody’s Lunch Box in Hollywood Studios’ Toy Story Land is serving up Totchos (basically tots loaded with yummy toppings!). These are similar to the Bacon Mac and Cheese Tots you’ll find at The Friar’s Nook in Magic Kingdom! Creamy Bacon Macaroni and Cheese Tots at The Friar’s Nook If you’re really hankering for a “bag of chips,” stop by Pepe in Disney Springs and get the Patatas Bravas. These beauties are fresh made chips covered in a tomatoey sauce and a garlicy aioli! — YUM! Patatas Bravas at Pepe José Andrés is a James Beard award-winning chef, so expect a higher-caliber than your regular Frito-Lays here! Click here to see our full review of the yum Patatas Bravas at Pepe here! What to Avoid: Regular Fast Food Pizza or Getting a Pizza Delivered to Your Hotel While you can get a standard pre-made pizza all over Disney World, there are much better ‘za options out there! What to Try Instead: If you can help it, avoid getting regular pizzas like you can order at home delivered to your Disney World resort and stay away from pizza joints like PizzeRizzo at Hollywood Studios or Pizzafari at Animal Kingdom. Even though they look impressive on the outside, with a few exceptions, they all serve the same standard “too much dough, not enough toppings” pizzas that are pre-made and honestly, not that great! PizzeRizzo Pizza is Standard Pizza Instead, we suggest you seek out more authentic spots that make their crust from scratch and fire them to order! Via Napoli in Epcot’s World Showcase or Disney Springs’ Pizza Ponte have some of the best, freshest pizzas around. Via Napoli These restaurants are part of the Pantina Group (the same folks who’ll be running Space 220 Restaurant when it blasts off!), and source their flour and water from the most authentic places possible to ensure you’re getting some TOP NOTCH ‘za. Click here to see why we love the pizza at Via Napoli! Blaze Fast Fire’d Pizza in Disney Springs is also a tastier option than Disney World’s mass-produced pizza pies. It’s a build-your-own pizza joint with a HUGE local following that’s turning out some quality pies! Building a Blaze Pizza Even though Blaze Pizza is a chain restaurant, the pizzas are hot, fresh, and not very expensive! If you don’t have a Blaze Pizza back home, give them a try! Click to see our review of Blaze Pizza in Disney Springs! What to Avoid: Grocery Store Beer Put that ol’ familiar bottle down! Disney has SO MUCH to offer in the realm of craft beers beyond just the “standard” grocery store options you’re used to back home! What to Try Instead: Be adventurous and try something local! Disney World features lots of local Central Florida microbreweries that you probably can’t find back home (unless you’re a Florida resident!). City Works in Disney Springs is a great place to get the party started! (Note that while we don’t necessarily recommend City Works for their food, we can def get behind their beer menu.) Just look at how many beers they’ve got on tap: City Works City Works features Florida brewers on a large number of their taps. You may find your new favorite “vacation” beer you’ve never heard of before here! Check out our review of City Works Eatery & Pour House here! In Disney’s Animal Kingdom, you can find a number of beers EXCLUSIVE to Disney World! Kungaloosh Spiced Excursion Ale can be found at Nomad Lounge and Thirsty River Bar and Trek Snacks. Over in Pandora, you’ll find a couple unique beers to this location — Hawke’s Grog and Mo’ara Ale! Leave it to the land of Avatar to serve a signature beer that’s GREEN! Mo’ara High Country Ale Over in Epcot’s World Showcase, you’ll find imported beers from all over the globe in each of the pavilions! And look for even more micro beers and ciders anytime there’s a festival going on! Click here to see one of the many beer flights at Epcot’s Flower and Garden Festival this year! What to Avoid: Be Our Guest Breakfast — If You’re NOT on a Disney Dining Plan! You might think you’re saving some money dining at Be Our Guest Restaurant for breakfast, but many of the basic “eggs and bacon” entrees aren’t worth the $29 price tag per entree! A Fried Croissant Donut costs almost as much as a nice dinner entree somewhere else! For a donut! We think breakfast here is way overpriced and not even that delicious. So skip it unless you can’t get into BOG for lunch AND you’re using the Disney Dining Plan! Breakfast at Be Our Guest We absolutely love dining in the beautiful ballroom or better yet, the spooky West Wing! But while the atmosphere is totally magical, we think there’s a better way to see inside the castle… . Click here to see our breakfast review of Be Our Guest! What to Try Instead: Eat here for LUNCH! Lunch is a much better value at Be Our Guest Restaurant! Photography is all about timing – pressing the shutter at just the right time to capture a moment, shooting at the time of day when the light is just right, etc. Sometimes it takes a lot of planning to make sure all of the timing comes together to make the picture the best it can be. In my nearly two decades as a Disney photographer, almost all the photos I’ve taken were assigned to me – someone needed a particular image, and needed me to get it. Sometimes, though, I get a picture stuck in my head I really want to capture – whether anyone asks or not! That happened with the photo you see here from the entrance of Shanghai Disneyland. In July 2015, Bob Iger revealed the layout of Shanghai Disneyland, using a giant scale model of the park. That was the first time I saw the entrance’s clock tower with the giant Mickey Mouse, and I said to myself, “There is a picture there, with a cast member adjusting Mickey’s hands. I really want to make that picture happen.” Almost a year later, in April 2016, I arrived in Shanghai as part of the team that helped open the park. My role was to create a new image library for the park that would be shared with the world. Once on the ground at the new Disney property, it was very much a giant and ever-changing construction site, but I made a note of the progress of that clock tower. In early May, there was finally enough progress done to try for the photo but there were still a lot of arrangements to be made first. I needed a lift to raise me above the ground and line up with the clock tower and Enchanted Storybook Castle. I also needed a cast member to be on the balcony in front of the clock to adjust the hands. Perhaps most challenging, I needed to keep the area free from all of the construction equipment, even as the park was close to its June 2016 debut. Finally, I needed to make sure all of this occurred early in the morning so the hands of the clock would be within reach of the cast member (the lighting wouldn’t be right in the evening, as I’d discovered on a scouting mission). The morning of the shoot finally arrived, and our team was in place and ready – all told, it took five people on-site to make this happen (including me). Just as I was strapping into the lift, though, my cell phone rang, and that’s when I learned there wasn’t an access point to the clock balcony. I immediately left the lift and headed up the clock tower staircase, hoping we could still make everything work without losing too much time. Once at the top, we noticed that they had installed the windows since our last scout and it looked like we were going to have to find another way to get our cast member out onto the balcony. But then we noticed a single bottom-row window pane hadn’t been installed yet, so our cast member was able to step through the window, onto the balcony and into position. I raced back down the stairs and to the lift to get up in the air before we lost too much time, the light changed, or Mickey’s giant hands were out of reach – or all three! We were able to try a few different shooting locations and lens options, but this was one of the first frames from that morning, before the cranes resumed their work on the castle and the park filled again with craftspeople putting the finishing touches on the park. Getting to that moment took a lot of planning, effort and flexibility on the part of a lot of people, but it was all worth it when I finally saw in full color the image that had been in my head for the past year. It makes me smile every time I look at it, and was definitely a #DisneyMagicMoment. View the full article

The Disney parks have been closed for over a month now. As experts attempt to predict a peak and path for the global health crisis, we’re starting to wonder what a reopening of the Disney parks might look like. Standby Line For Rise of the Resistance There are two MAJOR concerns when it comes to reopening the parks. The first is the safety of all guests, Cast Members, the surrounding communities, and beyond. On top of that, Disney’s financial situation has suffered considerably, so bringing money back in could be a driving factor surrounding when and how Disney can reopen. That’s a pretty tough balance to strike. The company has to produce a reopening date and procedure that is both a cautious decision and a financial one. But what if reopening isn’t what’s best for the finances of the company? Will the parks even be profitable if they reopen with the necessary health-focused modifications and restrictions? Would it still be worth opening? Sleeping Beauty Castle We’re checking out some of the difficult financial decisions that Disney is facing in regard to reopening their theme parks. Let’s jump in. In order for the parks to open, things have to change. There are a lot of uncertainties surrounding the global health crisis right now. Many health officials and analysts are considering widespread testing or a vaccine to be the goal if we want to return to normalcy, but that could be a while off — some note that a vaccine could take a year or more. So, as the global health crisis begins to ever so slightly decline, a slow reopening of the country will likely begin. For some places, like Florida, it already has. Walt Disney World Until a vaccine is available, safety might remain a major concern. On top of that, there is financial pressure for Disney to reopen the parks. They’re losing money every day, stocks are suffering, and the country is heading into a recession that could have significant ramifications for the company. With such major financial pressures, Disney will be looking to reinstate profits from its major theme park sector. Still, a reopening doesn’t necessarily mean that Disney will immediately be making money again. In truth, there may be no “right time” to reopen the Disney parks. A potential solution to this tricky balance is implementing health measures in the parks so that a reopen can occur sooner rather than later. Though keeping guests and Cast Members safe comes with a price. Such health measures could be expensive and time-consuming too. Click here to learn about what the coming economic downturn might hold for Disney. How Much Would It Cost to Implement New Health Measures In the Parks? We’ve talked about the kind of changes we could see in Disney World such as sanitation practices, capacity limits, ride modifications, and temperature screenings — but how much will those changes cost? Mostly, we’re talking about the possibility of park capacity limits and gradual openings, not to mention the fact that crowds may be lessened in general as people are hesitant or unable to travel. Changes to Park Capacity Last year, Disney made about $20.5 million per day on ticket sales for its theme parks around the world. Not to mention they also netted approximately $16 million per day on merchandise and food and roughly $17 million per day on resorts. That’s a whopping $53.5 million in revenue for the theme parks each day. MagicBand Scanner ©Disney There has been discussion of a “gradual” reopening to the parks that would have Florida Residents allowed to visit in the first phase, then domestic guests, then international guests. We’ve already seen a similarly phased reopening for Shanghai Disney Resort. A slow introduction of guests into the parks would mean a significant limit to capacity and attendance. So, when we start to think about limiting theme park capacity, it looks like there could be a significant financial loss. If all of the Disney theme parks around the world averaged a capacity loss of just 10%, it would mean a $5 million knock to profits per day. And if operating expenses remain similar to before as Disney sees a reduction in capacity, the company could risk operating at a loss in the theme park sector. Magic Kingdom Crowds Operating expenses in 2019 were approximately $38.4 million per day. With the above revenue, that leaves the Disney parks with a tidy profit of $15.1 million every day. That seems like a pretty big margin, but if Disney operates with capacity lowered beyond 28% the parks would be losing money every day. What’s worse than making $0? Operating at even more of a negative. Of course, some of these operating expenses could scale down along with the capacity changes. Fewer people in the parks means that it will take less money to operate them. Hotels may not be as full, therefore having less need for staff. Similarly, food costs to feed Disney at 100% capacity are pretty different from the costs it would take to feed Disney at 50% capacity. Even with these adjustments to operating costs, the lower they opt to set capacity and the fewer people who choose to visit Disney Parks, the more likely it is that theme park profits could end up in the red financially. Epcot Now, that’s not to say that the parks aren’t operating in the negative right now. Essential employees are still getting paid and some departments are still up and running while revenues are almost nonexistent. Still, opening the parks and losing even more money has to be a consideration. Other Health Measures Park capacity isn’t the only thing that has us concerned about the financial aspects of a reopening. Some of the other health measures that may be necessary for the parks could result in significant costs. To keep Cast Members safe, Disney may look to provide them with Personal Protective Equipment, like masks and gloves. Since the start of the global health crisis, PPE has skyrocketed in price, sometimes costing up to 1,000% more than it used to per CNN. Cast Members in Front of Spaceship Earth On top of that, it’s possible that Disney will seek to expand virtual queues in the parks that have some capacity for it already. We’ve seen Virtual Queues used for major attraction openings such as Rise of the Resistance but it’s possible that we may start to see it for other popular rides in order to lessen crowded queue lines. Expansion like that would mean that the costs associated with the new system and technological infrastructure would have to be absorbed as well. Still, Disney may be seeking to expand Virtual Queues anyway, so perhaps these costs have already been accounted for. Cast Member Water Art in Disney World Enhanced sanitation measures in the parks come with costs as well. Prior to the closures, we saw temporary hand-washing stations around the parks. Perhaps Disney will seek to install permanent handwashing stations much like they do on the Disney Cruise Line. It’s possible the heightened demand for sanitation will culminate in a need for more janitorial staff. Every little health measure incurs costs of its own and they can build up quickly. Want to know what some of the changes in Disney could look like? Click here. Implementation and Training of New Procedures Suppose Disney does opt to open the parks with new health measures; there would need to be a period of implementation and training. The tens of thousands of furloughed Cast Members would need to return to the parks and resorts for training that could take a few days or even longer. To get these health measures rolling, Disney would be ramping up operating costs including training, supplies, and labor while revenues remain almost nonexistent. Fantasyland hand-washing station Besides, depending on the depth of training required, getting Cast Members acclimated to the new normal could take some time, further increasing costs. That said, if Disney does determine that opening the parks safely would not constitute a loss, then every day that they remain closed is more money out of Disney’s pockets. Will Disney Open the Parks if Safety Measures Mean They Could Be Operating at a Loss? So, will Disney open the parks if the safety measures implemented require operating at even more of a loss? Potentially. Even though it seems counterintuitive, Disney may have to lose money to make it again. It’s possible that until a vaccine is available, the Disney parks won’t reach a point where they could open and have significant profits for a while. Magic Kingdom Operating at a loss at first might be necessary to build trust with guests and implement new procedures. They’ll need to work through the new protocols, so they may have to operate in the red to determine the new normal and work through any hiccups. A short period of financial loss could be what it takes to restore profit sooner rather than later. Walt and Mickey Partners Statue Disney likely has a hard road of financial loss ahead of them whether they open the parks soon or further down the road. It’s all a numbers game, and Disney is likely determining how they can DEFINITELY bring the parks back to a profitable model SAFELY. Doing so might mean they’re in the red — but it could be worth it to operate at a loss as long as the parks can be a safe place for guests once again.
