  2. The Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force, with Disney in attendance, has been in and out of meetings pretty heavily the past few weeks. Cinderella Castle and Main Street USA in Disney World We’ve been keeping an extra close eye on the Reopening Business Group (that has reps from Disney in attendance!) and the Bringing Back Tourism Group. Today, Disney spoke up in a meeting of the former to announce that their reopening plans as of right now are…no plans. A member of the group asked the park representatives in the committee to weigh in on what they’re thinking about the reopening of their companies and the state. Thomas Mazloum, Disney World’s Senior Vice President of Resort & Transportation Operations mentioned, “We do not have an opening date yet…I want to make it clear.” Walt Disney World Mazloum explained that just because Disney world is taking bookings for June, doesn’t mean they’ll be opening in June. As of now, the company does not have any news about Walt Disney World or any of its other parks. Mazloum reiterated a “want to be clear” saying that there are no plans to share about Disney World reopening at this time. A few of the other Orlando park representatives weighed in as well. Rich Costales, Universal Orlando’s Executive Vice President of Resort Operations, added that Universal has announced the decision to remain closed through May 31st, and beyond that, they haven’t made a decision. Slinky Dog in Toy Story Land Costales explained that, like other parks, Universal Orlando is “in limbo” until they understand the recommendations of health professionals. He added, “To speculate past what we’ve announced wouldn’t be appropriate.” Brad Gilmour from SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment responded that he had “nothing to add” to the comments from Disney and Universal. It certainly is interesting to get word FROM Disney on any new plans (or lack of plans, in this case!). We’ll be sure to continue our coverage of the Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force meetings. Click here to take a look at the takeaways from the Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force last week. What do you think of Disney’s statements? Tell us in the comments! 4. Disney World can sure be pricey, but that doesn’t mean you have to shell out all of your hard-earned cash to have a blast! Grand Floridian Resort in Disney World Are you looking to save money on dining next time you go to Disney World? Or do you need some creative, DIY hacks to recreate some special events that would otherwise end up costing your family hundreds of dollars? We have a few tips today on how you can still enjoy the “finer things in life” while on vacation at the Most Magical Place on Earth! You can take advantage of Deluxe Resorts without actually staying there! A misconception that we sometimes hear is that you MUST be a guest with a reservation in order to gain access to Disney World resorts. This is simply NOT the case! Guests are more than welcome to visit every single resort in Disney World, no matter where you are staying. Keep in mind that you cannot take advantage of the various pools, as those are special amenities reserved for guests staying at those resorts. But all of the restaurants, shops, and most activities are available to everyone, even if you’re not staying on Disney World property. Luna Park Pool at Disney’s Boardwalk If dining at the finest restaurants is a priority for you and your family, but you’re looking to save some pennies on your vacation, consider booking a Value Resort and visiting the Deluxe Resorts for a few meals. A great pick would be Disney’s Pop Century Resort, which would grant you direct access to both Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot via the new Disney Skyliner. You could hop on the Skyliner for a quick trip to Disney’s Riviera Resort to have a wonderful character breakfast at Topolino’s Terrace. Topolino’s Terrace Breakfast a la Art Entrees We actually highly recommend including a hotel hopping day in your plans next time you go to Disney World! Some of the resorts have a lot of fun activities for the entire family that, again, are available to EVERYONE — not just the folks staying there! For example, you don’t even need a park ticket to Animal Kingdom to see some of the African animals Disney has to offer! Head over to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and check out their very own savanna. Animal Kingdom Lodge Lobby Booking an Advance Dining Reservation at Sanaa is a great way to get views of the savanna while you dine on some spectacular food! Sanaa Bread Service. I Think He Wants to Steal Our Bread! Looking for some fun, lively nighttime activities? We cannot recommend Disney’s BoardWalk Inn enough! This resort is a great spot especially if you’re traveling without kiddos. Grab a drink at the AbracadaBar or a nice dinner at Flying Fish. Or you can swing by Jellyrolls Dueling Piano Bar for some drinks and spectacular entertainment (just be sure to arrive early; it’s often standing room only after 9:00PM!). Jellyrolls We especially love visiting all of the resorts during the holiday season. The Deluxe Resorts tend to go ALL OUT for Christmas. Trees, garland, and holiday music are plentiful throughout the resorts. Our favorite is the gorgeous giant (REAL!) Gingerbread House at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa! Grand Floridian Gingerbread House. Resist the Urge to Eat It! You can easily fill an entire day checking out all the decorations (and snacking on some Christmas cookies OBV!). Click here to see our roundup of ALL the resort Gingerbread Houses at Disney World last year. One thing to note, though, is that Disney resorts have gotten super weird about letting guests park in their parking lots when they’re not staying there. It’s usually fine for resorts that don’t have direct access to parks (like Animal Kingdom Lodge or the All Star resorts), but if getting to the parks is easy via walking, monorail, boat, or skyliner from a resort hotel, you may run into difficulty. You can either take a bus to the resort, park at the theme parks and visit resorts via the parks themselves (e.g. park at Magic Kingdom and pop over to California Grill for dinner via the monorail), or pay for valet (which kind of defeats the purpose of this article, but don’t forget that paying for valet parking allows you to valet park at any Deluxe resort as many times as you want for the rest of the day as well — so it might be worth it if you’re resort hopping for the day). Eat Table Service-quality dishes at lounges for a fraction of the cost One of the priciest line items of many Disney trips is the food and drink bill. Prices can easily add up if you’re eating your three meals a day, ESPECIALLY if many of these meals are at Disney’s wonderful sit-down restaurants. Red Wine Braised Beef Short Ribs at Citricos Lucky for you, there are a few hacks we would like to share! One of the best ways to save while still enjoying some of Disney’s best food and beverage offerings is to visit restaurant lounges! If you’re in Epcot, save a few bucks by visiting Tutto Gusto Wine Cellar. Cozy and welcoming, this lounge serves wines by the glass or bottle and a variety of small plates (as well as many items from the menu at the adjacent Tutto Italia Ristorante!). Bonus — you can usually grab a table with little to no wait! Just order a tasting plate versus a full entree — you get the experience without having to pay the big bucks. Tutto Gusto Spread Have you always wanted to dine at California Grill at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, but maybe you don’t have the budget for it? Check out the California Grill Lounge! You don’t need one of those hard-to-get reservations to eat there (just be aware that it is first-come, first-serve). PLUS you’ll have access to the full menu but can order just an appetizer and a drink instead of feeling guilty you’re not ordering full meal and a bottle of wine. (No Disney server would ever pressure you to order more than you’d like, but we try not to take up a server’s table if we’re not going to order all that much. If we DO, we’re sure to pay the same gratuity we would pay if we’d ordered a full meal.) Sonoma Goat Cheese Ravioli at Disney’s California Grill — the best appetizer in the World! And of course you get to take full advantage of those VIEWS! Our favorite part of dining in this lounge is it grants you full access to the fireworks viewing area at California Grill, which offers some stellar views of the fireworks in Magic Kingdom. But here’s a HUGE TIP: Even if you’re not there during fireworks time (lounge tables go FAST in the evening, and some people just sort of camp there until the fireworks, unfortunately), you can eat earlier and bring your receipt back to the restaurant to see the fireworks! View from California Grill Enchanted Rose Lounge is one of the newest lounges at Disney World, located in Disney’s Grand Floridan Resort & Spa. Inspired by Beauty and the Beast, this lounge serves up specialty cocktails and small bites for you to enjoy. While it is a bit pricey for a lounge, it does share its kitchen with Citricos, a Signature Restaurant at the resort. Everything on the menu at Enchanted Rose!! So if you want to sample some of Grand Floridian’s signature food but you don’t want to pay for a FULL meal, Enchanted Rose Lounge is a great option with a more laid-back (thought still super fancy) vibe! Read our full review on Enchanted Rose Lounge here! DIY your own fireworks dessert party or After Hours party! This next tip is a TON of fun, but might require a little extra leg work! Disney offers many fireworks dessert parties, including three at Magic Kingdom and one at Epcot. These parties are a great opportunity to snack on some sweet treats with a premium view of the nightly fireworks spectacular. Happily Ever After Dessert Party…Now With Alcohol! This doesn’t come cheap, however, with the Happily Ever After dessert parties ranging in price from $79-99 per adult ($47-59 per child), and the Epcot “Frozen Ever After” dessert party costing $99 per adult ($59 per child). For a family of four, that easily adds up to the cost of an additional night at your resort (or more!!). Frozen Ever After Dessert Party So, why not make your very own fireworks dessert party? If you can scope out a good viewing spot for the fireworks early, have someone in your group run and grab some desserts to munch on while you wait! This is a great way to use up those unused Snack Credits if you’re on the Disney Dining Plan. If you’re waiting for the fireworks at Epcot, grab some School Bread from Kringla Bakeri of Kafe in Norway, or get an ice cream cone from L’Artisan des Glaces in France. School Bread — Inside In Magic Kingdom, Main Street, U.S.A. is a haven for sweet and savory snacks. You can’t go wrong with a bucket of popcorn or a scoop of ice cream from Main Street Plaza Ice Cream Parlor. You can even DIY your very own MASSIVE ice cream sandwich. Or, stop by Casey’s Corner for our personal fave, the Corn Dog Nuggets (with EXTRA cheese, of course). Casey’s Corn Dog Nuggets If you want to go super rogue and avoid spending extra dollars on a park ticket, you can watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks from outside the park! Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort has some great spots on its beach to watch the fireworks, and the music is even played outside for guests to enjoy. (Remember, this is available to all guests; you DON’T have to be staying at the Polynesian to take advantage of this!) Grab a Dole Whip from Pineapple Lanai, or bring your own snacks, and enjoy the fireworks! As a bonus, you can also enjoy the Electrical Water Pageant from the beach each night! Electric Water Pageant Likewise, After Hours events and holiday parties like Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party are pretty hefty investments if you’re traveling with a larger family. Last year’s Christmas Party tickets ranged in price from $99 to $139 per adult ($94 to $134 per child ages 3-9). We came up with a fun little DIY holiday monorail party for you to try if you don’t want to invest ALL that dough. Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmastime Parade If you spend your day at Magic Kingdom, you can still experience much of what the Christmas Party has to offer: the decorations are up all day, the holiday music is playing throughout Main Street U.S.A., and many delicious holiday treats are available for you to enjoy all-day long. When it’s time to depart, hop on the monorail and do a gingerbread tour! There are some spectacular decorations in the lobbies of the Monorail Resorts during the holiday season. We already told you about the gorgeous house in the lobby of the Grand Floridian, but at Disney’s Contemporary Resort you’ll find a massive Cinderella Castle gingerbread display with treats available for purchase as well! Gingerbread Castle at the Contemporary Then, finish your evening at the Polynesian, where, you guessed it, you can watch the special holiday fireworks! Dress up in your best Christmas sweater (or not cause it’s still pretty warm that time of year!), and make your own holiday magic without shelling out hundreds of extra dollars. See what other fun activities you can experience WITHOUT a park ticket here! If you’re creative, you really CAN have it all in Disney World without spending it all! We hope we gave you a few ideas you hadn’t considered for how to stretch those dollars and have the best trip possible for less! You’re WORTH IT! 8. The global health crisis seems to be having a ripple effect in pretty much every industry around the world. Star Wars United Airlines Plane Of course, this ripple is going to inevitably have an effect on the way our next Disney vacation looks — and it might affect it in some surprising ways. Beyond how different things may be IN the parks, getting to Disney World or Disneyland could look a little different as well. We’re taking a look at the recent Federal Aid plan that includes a $25 billion Airline Rescue Package. How could that affect your trip to Disney? Let’s find out. What is the Airline Rescue Package? Let’s start with the basics. Towards the end of March, the U.S. Senate approved a major rescue for the struggling aviation sector. According to Reuters, the package is a mix of grants and loans meant to save airlines from bankruptcy and support over 750,000 employee paychecks during the time that flights are grounded. Essentially, it is a lifeline for airlines. Orlando International Airport The goal is that airlines will be able to resume normal operations as soon as they can without being financially stunted or going out of business. The rescue was passed as a piece of the recent economic stabilization package. According to The New York Times, the strength of the airline industry is a major pillar of the United States economy; stabilizing the airlines means that tourism, business, and trade are more stabilized too. ©Disney Orlando International Airport The package obliges participating airlines to keep staffing levels, wages, salaries, and benefits at a minimum of 90% of what they were last April through September, according to The Daily Beast. This protects workers from furloughs and lay-offs so that a return to the status quo could be as seamless as possible. Click here to learn about what airport protocols might be as Florida reopens. When will I be flying again? Ok, so what does that mean for the airplane PASSENGERS (AKA, just us regular joes)? The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is speculating that a gradual lifting of travel bans is coming as there are some signs of turning points for the travel market in China already. Orlando International Airport With some improvements on the horizon, IATA projects a recovery of 75% of flights in the third quarter of 2020 with 90% returning by the end of the year. Orange County International Airport The government prioritizing the airline rescue package shows that they believe air travel is an essential part of the nation’s economy. It will be a priority for major companies to get back in the air and travel again. So, if you WANT to fly to Disney World, you should be able to do so. Did you know there may be a high-speed train from MCO to Disney World in progress? Click here to learn more! What about international passengers? Things are a little different for international passengers. This lifeline for airlines doesn’t mean that international travel will rocket back to normal. Airlines and airports in other countries may have trouble recovering if their governments do not offer a similar package. In that case, we might see international flights limited. Maria & Enzo’s Ristorante ©Patina Restaurant Group On top of that, it’s unclear at this time if airlines will necessarily be able to fill seats. If people are unwilling or unable to travel internationally, it could make the number of international flights available financially nonviable. According to the New York Times, 68 countries around the world currently have some form of a travel ban in place that would also need to be lifted for travel to resume; many of them have limited or suspended international flights. Star Wars Plane ©United Needless to say, international travelers may have trouble making it to Orlando for some time. Interestingly enough, this could have an effect on crowds in a reopened Disney World (when the parks allow international visitors again). According to the Orlando Sentinel, around 20% of Walt Disney World guests are international. Click here to read more about a potential “gradual” reopening for Disney World. What does this mean for your Disney World trip? So the big question: What does this mean for YOUR Disney trip? The lifeline means that it is a little safer (from a flight availability perspective) to book your flight for your Disney World trip later this year. Of course, you’ll need to be extra wary of cancellation and change fees. Many airlines have opted to waive fees but CHECK THAT FINE PRINT. We definitely recommend travel insurance at this uncertain time if you don’t want to risk it. Disney’s Magical Express Bus Another thing to remember is that airlines may be offering discounted rates as they attempt to return to normal flight patterns. As long as you’re protected from the fine print change and cancellation fees, this could mean it could be an even BETTER time to plan your Disney vacation. And true, a reduction in international travelers means that crowds could be somewhat lighter. However, there are a LOT of variables going into what crowds will look like in the parks this year and the next. Try not to set your expectations too rigidly. The truth is, crowd levels in a reopened Disney World are very much a mystery at this time, as is the reopening itself. Magic Kingdom For more guidance on factors affecting your upcoming Disney trip, remember to keep an eye on the DFB site! We’ll be sure to examine a BUNCH of different angles when it comes to things that could matter to your trip. Until next time, stay safe! 11. “MAY THE 4TH” BE WITH YOU!! We’re celebrating Star Wars Day by taking a look back at some of our favorite Star Wars-themed FOOD items from the days before Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opened in Disneyland and Walt Disney World! Sith Hummus Galaxy’s Edge has given guests on both coasts the chance to immerse themselves in all things Star Wars like never before — and that even applies to the land’s food and drink! We can raise a glass at Oga’s Cantina, sip on Blue or Green Milk, or dine on “Ronto meat.” But today we’re having a little extra fun for “May the 4th” and going through some photos of Star Wars food from the past, and thought you might like to check them out with us. Because “a long time ago,” before Star Wars-themed food in the Disney parks looked like this… Blue and Green Milk at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge … some of it looked like THIS! Chips and Sith from Star Wars Weekends 2015 Though we’re showcasing ten items (or categories of items) today, please note that these are in no particular order as far as the sheer amount of Star Wars joy they have given to Disney food fans over the years. And with that, here we go! Or maybe we should say… “Punch It, Chewie!” Star Wars Character Cupcakes Long before it was Walt Disney’s World’s home to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Hollywood Studios was well known for being home to some incredible cupcakes! Jabba the Hutt Cupcake And Quick Service locations all over the park like Backlot Express and our beloved (though now closed) Starring Rolls have served up several cupcake tributes to Star Wars characters over the years! Characters representing both sides of the Force have been represented, from the Dark Side… Kylo Ren and BB-9E Cupcakes … and the Light! BB-8 Lemon Cupcake With Vanilla Buttercream Chocolate Coconut Kashyyyk German Chocolate Cupcake at Backlot Express Two of the most popular Star Wars cupcakes over the years have included the Darth Vader Peanut Butter Chocolate Cupcake and the chocolate hazelnut Yoda Cupcake. Darth Vader cupcake Yoda cupcake Anyone remember Star Wars Weekends in 2014, when you could pick these guys up at ACKBAR SNACK BAR?? Ackbar Snack Bar during Star Wars Weekends Say it with me… Admiral Ackbar takes a sip “IT’S A TRAP!!” Lightsaber Churros Anyhoo, speaking of sides, guests in both Disneyland and Walt Disney World have been given the chance to choose their side by choosing their CHURRO! CHURRO LIGHTSABERS!!!! Is it a Red or Blue Lightsaber Churro for you? Jedi Mickey Star Wars Dine Okay, this doesn’t fall under the category of “food item,” per se, but how can we not share some of these moments from the limited-time Jedi Mickey Star Wars Dine at Hollywood and Vine, also from Star Wars Weekends 2014?! Jedi Mickey at Star Wars Jedi Mickey Character Dinner Ewok Chip and Dale Selections making up the Hollywood and Vine buffet received a temporary Star Wars makeover. While most of these options were themed in name only, the desserts stole the Star Wars show (taking second place, of course, to our Disney pals dressed in Star Wars costumes)! Star Wars Desserts at Hollywood and Vine Darth Goofy One of the first times we got to try a Blue Milk item, for example, was Aunt Beru’s Blue Milk Ice Cream among the dessert options at Hollywood and Vine for the occasion. Aunt Beru’s Blue Milk Ice Cream Of course, that’s just one example… Blue Milk Shake It’s true! The Milk Stand in Galaxy’s Edge hasn’t been the first place we’ve been able to drink a version of Luke Skywalker’s signature sip. Blue Milk Shake The Blue Milk Shake, for one, was once available at Dockside Diner and the Tune-In Lounge in Hollywood Studios. Bantha Blue Milk French Toast Blue Milk has made its way into other food items, too, like the Bantha Blue Milk French Toast when Disneyland’s Galactic Grill featured a Star Wars-themed menu. Bantha Blue Milk French Toast Now THAT’S quite a way to start the day! The Dark Fried The Dark Fried presented a classic dish — chicken and waffles — with a Star Wars twist! The Dark Fried The chicken came in the form of those classic and tasty Chicken Breast Nuggets you’ll find all over Disney World, complete with some Darth Vader-themed waffles! Darth Vader Waffles with maple syrup This dish made its debut when Backlot Express turned into the Rebel Hangar: A Star Wars Lounge Experience during Star Wars Weekends 2015, and a version was also available at Backlot Express prior to the opening of Galaxy’s Edge. Star Wars Novelty Items True, these next items aren’t technically “food,” but the novelty items over the years have certainly earned their place in Star Wars snacking lore. Millennium Falcon Glow Cube From glow cubes, to Character Steins, to Popcorn Buckets, the Force is STRONG with novelty Star Wars items. Vader Bucket with Popcorn Death Star glow cube Han Solo in Carbonite Popcorn Bucket Stormtrooper Stein And they aren’t all retired! The BB-8 Sipper still has a home in Hollywood Studios, as do more recent finds like the Millennium Falcon Popcorn Bucket, which made its debut in Disneyland! BB-8 Sipper! Millennium Falcon Popcorn Bucket First Order Burger The First Order Burger, which was available at Galactic Grill in Disneyland, was known for its unique black bun. (A Royal Guard Burger with the same bun was also, for a time, available at Backlot Express in Hollywood Studios). First Order Burger from Disneyland’s Galactic Grill And even though it was themed in name only, we also got a kick out of placing an order for a Cheese-3PO at Galactic Grill! Cheese-3PO Burger I wish all cheeseburgers were called Cheese-3POs, now that I think about it. Chips and Sith I don’t know if anything, from a pure presentation perspective, can ever quite top Chips and Sith, which was also a limited-time item at the Rebel Hangar. Sith Hummus What you’re looking at — and what’s LOOKING BACK AT YOU — is a chickpea and lemon hummus topped with a roasted red pepper coulis which provided the base of the face and black sesame dust creating Darth Maul’s signature tattoos. Chips and Sith from Star Wars Weekends 2015 Radish-ringed eyes and Bugle snack horns completed the Sith… I mean, the dish! Genius. (By the way, who’s watching the final episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars on Disney+ today??) Wookie Cookie Though we’ve been taking a look back, we also want to give a nod to a more recent Star Wars-themed snack on the scene that is found outside of Galaxy’s Edge. Wookiee Cookiee at Hollywood Studios And that’s because the Wookie Oatmeal Cookie Sandwich that recently arrived (in line with the film release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) at Backlot Express in Hollywood Studios is awesome! You can read more about it here. We hope you’ve enjoyed this look back at these Star Wars eats and treats! And we hope you are also excited about all the Star Wars food fun we can look forward to when Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is open once again in Hollywood Studios and Disneyland! Ronto Wrap Fuzzy Tauntaun Thermal Detonator drinks and Outpost Mix Remember… “The Force will be with you. Always.” We hope you have a fun Star Wars Day!! Thanks for spending some of it with us! 12. A member of our team experienced something interesting when checking the FastPass+ section of their My Disney Experience account. 2020 Annual Passholder Magnet The Disney World parks have been closed since March 16th. Previously, Disney announced that Annual Pass Memberships will be extended for however many days the parks remained closed. A member of our team experienced something interesting in the FastPass+ section of their My Disney Experience account. They were unable to make FastPass+ reservations after May 13th, which is the original expiration date of their Annual Pass before the closures took place. Screenshot from My Disney Experience Based on the policy announced by Disney, the expiration date on their pass will be pushed back to reflect the Disney World closure. BUT, it doesn’t look like that is automatically reflecting in the ability to make FastPass+ selections. Screenshot from My Disney Experience This could be a temporary glitch in the system, and we’ll continue to research this further. But based on what our team has initially experienced, it appears that Annual Passholders are unable to make FastPass+ reservations outside of their initial expiration window. Do you have an Annual Pass that was originally set to expire during the closure? If so, are you experiencing the same thing? Let us know in the comments! 17. Since the parks have closed, we’ve REALLY been missing grabbing snacks around Epcot. Caramel Popcorn at Epcot’s Karamell-Kuche We especially miss one of our favorite stomping grounds, Karamell-Küche, with all its AMAZING caramel treats. Its name literally means “caramel kitchen,” so they know their stuff! If you’ve never wandered over to the sweet shop in the Germany Pavilion, Karamell-Küche is home to fudge, brownies, cookies, apples, and basically ANY other treat you can imagine, covered with lots and lots of Werther’s Original Caramel. And, although we can’t visit Karamell-Küche to get some of their famous treats right now (we miss you, boozy caramels), you can make your own version of one of its most popular snacks right in your kitchen! So, get ready to make movie night even better with this version of the Werther’s Caramel Corn Recipe! Making Caramel Corn We tore through a lot of caramel corn recipes on the internet but none seemed to add up to that delightful treat we know and love. Most used baking soda, which we don’t recall ever seeing in the open kitchen while the caramel corn was prepared, so we came up with our own recipe! We hope you like it! Ingredients ¼ cup of coconut oil ½ cup of popcorn kernels Popcorn Ingredients 1 ½ sticks of butter 2 cups of sugar 1 can of evaporated milk 1 tsp of kosher salt (2 tsp if using unsalted butter) 1 cup of light corn syrup (All our store had in stock was dark — that works too if that’s all you can find!) Caramel Ingredients Recipe Popcorn: Note, we’re making our own popcorn but by all means, grab a bag of your fav microwave popcorn and pop it up instead! 1. Set your stove on medium to high heat. Melt the coconut oil in a deep pot with a lid. Melted Coconut Oil and Kernels 2. Once melted, add 3 kernels of popcorn to the pot. Wait for them to all pop! After they do, scoop them out and dump the rest of your kernels inside the pot. Popcorn Kernels 3. Shake the pot quick to evenly disperse the kernels. Cover the pot and immediately take it off the heat. Popcorn Kernels 4. Wait 30 seconds before putting the pot back on the heat. Once the kernels start popping vigorously, begin shaking the pot until the popping slows or stops. Popcorn Kernels Popping! 5. Immediately dump your popcorn into a bowl so it doesn’t burn! Anybody Else Hungry Now?? Caramel: 6. Wipe out your popcorn pot. Add 1 stick of butter, sugar, evaporated milk, kosher salt, and corn syrup. Now’s a good time to slip a candy thermometer on your pot. Caramel Ingredients Make sure to stir it well until you start getting that GORGEOUS caramel color! Evaporated Milk 7. Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat. Be patient!! This will take some time. It will seem like your thermometer isn’t budging then it will take off after a few minutes! Bubbling Caramel 8. Stir continually until the temperature reaches “hard ball” or 266 degrees F on the candy thermometer. Make sure to watch the thermometer very closely as you wait, stirring the entire time! Accuracy is key when making candy! Note: we don’t recommend doing this without a candy thermometer. The difference in a few degrees could mean you’re left with sticky syrup or rock hard candy, so eyeballing it is NOT recommended! Almost Ready! 9. When it hits 266 degrees, turn off the heat and move the pan off the hot stove. Lookin’ Good! 10. Stir in the extra ½ stick of butter. Stirring in the Butter 11. As soon as it melts, dump the popcorn into the pot… Add Your Popcorn …and stir until it’s coated. You’ll want to work pretty quickly since the caramel will start setting up as it cools. We’re SO Close to Finishing! 12. Pour the popcorn onto a sheet pan… Placing the Popcorn onto a Sheet Tray …and spread it as evenly as you can manage. It will start to set by this point. Doesn’t That Look AMAZING? Let it cool completely before breaking it into smaller bits to eat! Caramel Popcorn! And, there you have it!! You’ve got your own Caramel Corn just like in EPCOT (we’ve haven’t been this excited about popcorn since we tried our Cheesy Chocolate Caramel Popcorn hack!). Your Own Werther’s Caramel Corn While you’re baking up a storm in your kitchen, you can also make Nudel Gratin and giant Soft Pretzels from the Germany Pavilion. Oooor you can even try your hand at a few Flower and Garden Festival recipes! Whatever you pick, we bet your kitchen will smell just as great as Karamell-Küche (ours sure did!) 19. These are the Disney World mysteries we can’t stop thinking about! Cinderella Castle Disney World is the most magical place on earth! But every now and then, we find ourselves wondering about the pixie dust behind the curtain. We managed to dig up answers to some of these puzzling questions, but others remain a magical mystery! Here are six burning questions we have about Disney World! If you can answer any of the mysteries, let us know! Was River Country Closed Due to Brain-Eating Amoeba? You may be familiar with Disney’s Blizzard Beach and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon, but have you heard of the first waterpark at Disney World — River Country? This waterpark was opened in 1976 in the area that Reflections – A Disney Lakeside Lodge is currently being constructed. Reflections Concept Art © Disney River Country stuck around for 25 years. But, after closing for its scheduled annual winter refurbishment in November 2001, River Country never reopened its gates. River Country ©Disney One of the most popular conspiracy theories behind the permanent closure is that the water park was infested with deadly, brain-eating amoebas. Most of the park’s water wasn’t chlorinated, rather it was primarily lake water sourced from the adjacent Bay Lake. Lake water like this can be found to harbor amoebas that, if they make their way into the body, can be deadly. Unfortunately, an 11-year old boy did contract a fatal case of amoebic meningoencephalitis — allegedly from the lake, which likely encouraged the rumor. But, this occurred back in 1980, 21 years before the park closed. There were no further cases in the following years, so concern over amoebas was likely not the reason for the closure. Sunrise at Bay Lake In fact, the most likely reason River Country was never reopened comes down to finances. The tourism industry was hit hard after the 9/11 terror attacks in New York City, and with the newly opened Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach Water Parks drawing in more guests, River Country probably just couldn’t generate enough traffic for Disney to keep the park open. And so, River Country faded into the sunset. Check out the Princess and the Frog themed restaurant coming to Reflections! Are The Hall of Presidents…Presidents…Wearing Any Underwear? Located in the Liberty Square area of Magic Kingdom, The Hall of Presidents is a classic Disney attraction. And for good reason! It comes from an idea created by Walt Disney himself — “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln,” which premiered at the New York World’s Fair in 1964. The Hall of Presidents Waiting Area The show stage features incredibly lifelike Audio-Animatronic versions of each of the presidents throughout American history. In fact, the figures are such accurate representations, we’ve often found ourselves wondering, “Are those guys wearing any underwear?” ©Disney We did some digging that turned up some incredible details about just how far Disney went to make sure the representations are true-to-life. In fact, the hairpieces and clothing for each president were custom made, with fabrics sewn and stitched to match popular styles in each of their eras — right down to the seams! ©Disney What’cha Wearin’ Under There, Gents? But, despite all of the info we could find about the attention to detail on the visible clothing worn by each president, we couldn’t find ANY mention of underwear! Is this to respect the privacy of the Audio-Animatronics? Or does that mean they’re going commando? This is one mystery that still remains. We took a walk through Disney history at the Walt Disney Archives Exhibit! Why Can’t We Live in Epcot Like Walt Originally Imagined? EPCOT was one of Walt Disney’s most ambitious concepts. Walt originally envisioned EPCOT (which stood for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow) as a Utopian city, focused on cutting edge technology and solving the common problems of urban living. If you’ve taken a ride on the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover in Magic Kingdom, you may have even seen the model of his Progress City concept! This is, in fact, the actual original model Walt looked over, which has been restored and maintained over the years. ©Disney So, since Walt envisioned EPCOT as a city, why can’t we rent an apartment inside Spaceship Earth? Or maybe get a cute 2 bedroom inside The Seas Pavilion? Epcot Unfortunately, when Walt passed away in 1966, the company shifted focus away from EPCOT completely. Instead, executives concentrated their efforts on getting Walt Disney World up and running — which at the time meant completing construction on Magic Kingdom. Magic Kingdom When Walt Disney World Resort did open, it was a groundbreaking location. Disney became a destination resort, establishing itself as “The Vacation Kingdom of the World.” Walt Disney World So, when Disney executives decided to revisit EPCOT in the mid-1970s, it made more financial sense to focus on theme parks, rather than big-picture cities. Walt was the biggest champion for the city concept, so without his ongoing influence over the project, EPCOT shifted into the theme park we know today. But did you know Disney World is actually…its own city? Disney World had to create an infrastructure to finance production, so it actually has its own government, city council, utilities, fire department, and more. So while Walt’s true EPCOT never happened…he did end up inspiring a true Progress City. Check out this video to learn all about it! Was Disney Trying to Traumatize us with the “Butt-Bug” Effect in It’s Tough to be a Bug?? Those of us who have been to a performance of the 4-D show It’s Tough to be a Bug in Disney’s Animal Kingdom are all too familiar with this effect! It’s Tough To Be A Bug After the final scene, the narrator (Flik!) asks us “honorary bugs” to remain seated while the “lice, bed bugs, maggots, and cockroaches exit first.” At that point, our seats begin to CRAWL underneath us as the other bugs make their way out of the theater! Animal Kingdom The creepy-crawly sensation catches us off guard and can be really scary for both kids and adults! So why did Disney do that do us?? Well, apparently we have Imagineer Kevin Rafferty to thank for this effect! He said this about his reasoning behind the squirmy seats, “It’s always fun to leave our guests happy and laughing and getting a surprise that they totally didn’t expect. Just to bring it all home with a smile.” So, apparently, it’s meant to surprise us and make us…smile. Imagineer Kevin Rafferty Standing Next to Another Attraction He Helped Create — Mickey’s PhilharMagic! ©Disney Rafferty tested out his creation by sitting in with an audience during the show. He said that after the bugs crawled past, a man who appeared to be in his 80s turned to his wife and said, “I don’t know what that was, but I want to do that again!” So, as scary as it may be to some of us…and our screaming kids…apparently the effect is having the intended outcome! Watch this video to learn about 37 hidden gems in Animal Kingdom! How Do We Manage to See so Many Animals on the Safari Every Time? We love spotting all of our favorite animals on Kilimanjaro Safaris! We’ve seen giraffes walk right in front of our safari vehicle, lions snoozing on their own Pride Rock, and baby elephants (clumsily) playing with their family. Elephant on Kilimanjaro Safaris But, since these are actual animals, unlike our animatronic friends on Jungle Cruise, how do we get lucky enough to see soooo many animals every time?? Kilimanjaro Safari sign Well, it turns out the animals of Kilimanjaro Safari grace us with their presence in exchange for some treats! Out on the savannah, Imagineers hang feeders and salt licks to encourage shy animals like giraffes, cattle, and gazelles, to come out and see us! And those gorgeous lions lounging on the rocks? Imagineers created a system which pipes cool air out of these rock formations, which gives the lions a comfortable spot to soak up the sun while still in view for guests! Giraffe So, it isn’t luck after all! It turns out that Imagineers have given the animals a little extra incentive to hang out with us safari-goers! That said, you will likely see a LOT more animals — and more active animals — if you ride Kilimanjaro Safaris in the early morning or the evening when it’s cooler outside in Central Florida. Even food can’t bring some of these guys out into the crazy hot weather!! Check out our Earth Day inspired Disney+ playlist! Does the Creepy Dummy on Tower of Terror Have a Backstory? If you’re looking for a ride with an impressive amount of detail, Tower of Terror is a great place to start! The lobby and pre-show room are chock-full of Easter eggs, and we could spend hours trying to find them all! Tower of Terror But one piece of decor that reallllly catches our eye is the creepy ventriloquist dummy who is waiting for us just after the drop sequence. As spooky as he is, we’ve seen him so often that we started to wonder, “Hey little guy, what’s your name?” Tower of Terror Sign Well, as it turns out, this little dummy does have a backstory that includes a name! Tower of Terror takes its inspiration from the television show The Twilight Zone. And even though the storyline of the ride was NOT taken directly from an episode of the show, there are plenty of details that pay homage to actual storylines from the program! The ventriloquist dummy is inspired by the episode “Caesar and Me,” where a talking dummy named Caesar torments his owner. ©CBS To top it all off, Cast Members confirm the dummy’s name as well! A superstition among “bellhops” requires them to say hello and good night to Caesar every day, or else he’ll cause trouble around the building. As if he wasn’t creepy enough! So next time you’re “checking out” of the Hollywood Tower Hotel, be sure to say bye to Caesar! Check out the recently reimagined Tower of Terror in Disneyland Paris! As huge Disney World fans, we find ourselves pondering a wide variety of questions about the parks. Sometimes we wonder what new and innovative ride technology they’ll use next or when they might open a new resort. And other times we just really want to know if our favorite dummy has a name or what sort of undies our fav presidents are rocking! 20. Shortly after we saw the Disney parks shut their doors, we started to see stores, restaurants, and experiences across the country, like movie theaters, close down as well. AMC Theater in Disney Springs With distributors unable to theatrically release their content, some have turned to digital at-home releases instead. Is this a temporary trend out of necessity, or could Disney capitalize on this with their future film releases? Theatrical Releases Have Their Flaws We can’t discuss the future of movie releases without first confronting our current reality. As news of the global situation spread, nationwide theater chains like AMC Theaters took action by limiting capacity and attempting to continue operations as close to normal as possible. AMC Theater in Disney Springs But days later, theme parks and restaurants across the country started closing to all guests, and AMC, along with other theater chains across the country, closed to the public. But some on-demand video releases have garnered big bucks in the meantime, which is causing movie-makers to scratch their heads and consider new possibilities. Could the future be on-demand? Theatrical Releases Cost Distributors A LOT More Money When films are traditionally released to theaters, the profits are split 50/50 between the distributor and the exhibitors. This means if a movie like Avengers Endgame, for instance, made $2.8 billion at the box office, chop that number in half to $1.4 billion going back to Disney and $1.4 billion going to all the theaters that showed it worldwide. That’s a massive chunk of change they’re losing out on simply by needing a venue. Opening Night Carpet To make things trickier, marketing a theatrical release costs distributors a SIGNIFICANT amount of money — typically at LEAST 50% of the cost to create the film — and this amount continues to grow. As the cost to create these massive films goes up, studios are willing to shell out more and more cash towards marketing to ensure the films do well at the box office. To give some perspective of just how much marketing these movies can cost a studio, let’s look at Avengers Endgame again. The film cost $356 million to make, yet the marketing budget was a massive $200 million. Avengers Pin — Marketing Budget Money, Baby! Even after recouping the costs of marketing and production with the profits, Avengers was still a massive money-maker for Disney. But if you were to look at a more lukewarm film release, it’s not uncommon for distributors to barely break even or still be in the red once a film finishes its theatrical run and costs are accounted for. This FULL-SIZED VAN Came Right Out of Onward’s Marketing Budget. ©Disney Springs With theaters across the world closed down, studios are hurting for cash. But studios hold the power to either postpone costly theatrical releases — along with the marketing and additional associated costs — or find another avenue to make some cash off their already costly investments. Enter: Video On Demand. Video On Demand Could Be the Solution With studios hurting for cash, making the switch to Video On Demand may pose a solution over both the short and long term. What Is Video On Demand? Video On Demand allows users to rent films digitally for about $20 for 48 hours of access. This format is traditionally the pit stop films take between being released in theaters and making their way to DVD or rental platforms. But could the theater closures and a few risky releases straight to On Demand have uncovered the future of movies? How Video On Demand Is Different When a studio and theater agree to a traditional theatrical release, they split the profits 50/50, like we mentioned. But when a studio releases a film to a Video On Demand retailer, the studio retains 80% of the profits – which means MUCH bigger bucks for the studio if the film does well. By foregoing a costly premiere (which is also taken out of that marketing budget!), outdoor marketing (like billboards and bus wraps), and even reducing other marketing and press costs by releasing straight to On Demand or with a limited theater release, could studios like Disney turn a higher profit in the long run? ©Disney To make On Demand even more enticing, the Academy just changed their rules for which films qualify for the Oscars. Before now, films needed to run in theaters in the Los Angeles area for at least seven days to be considered by the Academy. With the nationwide closures, the Academy is now temporarily allowing films released directly to On Demand platforms to qualify for awards. This could remove a large barrier for studios to start releasing straight to on demand — if they can still be nominated for Oscars even with a digital release, will we could see a lot more titles pushed straight to On Demand? But these are still questions. So were’s the data? On Demand Has Worked Well…So Far NBCUniversal took the risk first by pushing a theater-level film straight to On Demand and, to everyone’s surprise, it worked! Trolls World Tour, the sequel to the first Trolls movie, cost $90 million to make and was only projected to make $17-27 million on opening weekend (before the nation started closing down!). ©Universal Pictures When it released On Demand, it shattered this estimate bringing in $50 million its first weekend and set three On Demand records in the process. Trolls World Tour became the most pre-ordered title ever, the top release during its first three days, and resulted in FandangoNow’s biggest weekend numbers to date. ©Fandango Now Since release, the film has raked in $95 million making it more successful in three weeks than the original Trolls film was in five months in theaters. The CEO of NBCUniversal stated “The results for Trolls World Tour have exceeded our expectations and demonstrated the viability of PVOD (Paid Video On Demand). As soon as theaters reopen, we expect to release movies on both formats.” ©Universal Pictures Following the above statements from NBCUniversal’s CEO that they intend to release content to Video On Demand AND theaters, AMC Theaters clapped back that they would no longer show Universal Studios’ films because “Universal is breaking the business model and dealings between our two companies.” Regal Cinemas also issued a warning to Universal threatening to not show their films in their theaters. If studios choose to split releases between theaters and Video On Demand, that would result in a MUCH lower income for theater chains (remember that hefty 50% of profits they make per film?). The Lion King Poster at AMC But with just how successful Universal’s Trolls World Tour was, it’s possible studios will continue to push forward with digital releases with little concern for theaters. Regardless of how they distribute their films, studios will make money; but theaters are still solely dependent on studios feeding them content to survive. Warner Bros is following NBCUniversal’s lead and releasing their next animated film, Scoob!, straight to Video On Demand May 15th. But time will tell whether Trolls World Tour’s success was a fluke (after all, everyone’s stuck in their houses right now and literally CANNOT go to theaters), or if this format could bring in comparable profits to theater releases. ©Warner Bros Disney is no stranger to Video On Demand during this time as well. They attempted to salvage their limited theater release of Onward with a short stint on On Demand followed by a release to Disney+. The film brought in $50 million on opening weekend (higher than originally projected), but profits tanked shortly after when theaters were forced to close their doors. In an effort to recover lost profits, it spent two weeks On Demand. But with the movie already released in theaters AND Disney+ subscribers already anticipating its scheduled release on Disney+, On Demand profits may have been stunted. Why On Demand Is Appealing to Consumers We love going to the theater as much as anyone else, but we see how this Video On Demand structure offers an attractive alternative, especially considering the current circumstances. Even outside of a global situation like this, going to see a movie isn’t always feasible or cost effective. Opening Night Pin and Ticket If you have little ones at home or you can’t afford to shovel out at least $10-$15 per ticket plus snacks plus babysitting plus anything else it takes to get out for an event like this, you may be ok with skipping that trip to the theater. Theater attendance already fell 4.6% last year without everything going on this year, so a quick $20 rental and popping some popcorn at home can offer families a more accessible alternative to enjoy the movies they otherwise might have skipped. Popping Some (Cheaper) Popcorn at Home and Watching A Movie Doesn’t Sound So Bad! But especially in light of the latest events, On Demand streaming offers an extra sense of comfort if the global situation has lasting effects on people’s behavior and sense of safety. Studios can reap the benefits of cutting marketing costs, avoid higher ratio sharing with theaters, rake in cash without an extra delay, AND possibly draw in more consumers than they would have theatrically. Find out when our readers said they would feel safe going back to Disney World here! What Could This Mean for Disney? So pushing directly to On Demand worked well for Universal; but what could this success mean for Disney? Pro: Disney Has a Lot to Offer On Demand Disney responded to this crisis by pushing films like Frozen 2 to Disney+ before originally slated, but they’re still planning to hold off on their more highly anticipated films. For their bigger “tentpole” films, Disney has opted to shift films like Mulan, Black Widow, and Jungle Cruise down the calendar in hopes of hosting traditional theater releases. The Official Mulan Poster ©Walt Disney Studios But films like Mulan were set to release back in March, followed shortly after by others — so Disney has content ready or close to ready to go! Production delays have complicated their timelines, but the On Demand platform could be a viable way for Disney to release these already prepared films. Disney has been no stranger to financial struggles during the closures, so if the On Demand option does prove successful, this could be a great way for them to earn some quick revenue. Find out the new theatrical release dates for Disney films here! Con: Disney Has No Precedent for a [Would Be] Successful Blockbuster On Demand A shift towards shorter stints in theaters and films racing to On Demand platforms (or forgoing theaters entirely) would take time to prove truly successful. The current events have encouraged studios to risk releasing to On Demand, but there is no precedent for how larger films — or films not aimed at kiddos — like Jungle Cruise would do without a traditional theatrical release or outside the context of a global situation like this. ©Disney In the past, bigger budget films have faired well in the On Demand space, presumably as a result of their successful time in theaters. But it is a risk and studios may lose considerable amounts of money not having a theatrical release viewers have come to expect. Shifting to On Demand would have to be a long term investment in the changing at-home landscape that relies on viewers’ willingness to accept — and be ready for — a new paradigm. With how AMC and Regal Cinemas responded to Universal’s decision to push to On Demand, following in their footsteps could ultimately lead to damaged relationships between Disney and the theaters hosting their films. We can’t forget about that AMC in Disney Springs. If bridges were burned, that would likely complicate things further! Disney may be discouraged to push bigger films to On Demand to maintain good-standing with these brands. AMC’s Red Carpet for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil NBCUniversal risked pushing one of their films straight to Video On Demand and was shockingly successful. Digital releases could save big bucks in marketing expenses, bring in a higher percentage of the profits, and meet consumer needs. But, pushing to On Demand threatens the future of theaters AND could strain long-standing relationships between studios and theaters. With viewers still confined to their homes and eager for entertainment while many are furloughed or out of work, it’s too early to tell. But if consumer habits and demands continue, we may see more and more On Demand releases in the future. Click here to find out more about how the Florida task force is planning to reopen businesses! 23. We’ve been anxiously awaiting our chance to enjoy a meal at Space 220! Space 220 Concept Art ©Disney We’ve been keeping a close eye on the progress of construction on Space 220, the new table-service restaurant and lounge coming to Epcot! The concept art for the new dining location shows off its next level theming. Upon entering, guests will board an elevator that takes them up into the spacecraft hovering above Earth, with “windows” showing the view below! The unique concept has generated a lot of hype, and excited guests are eager for the chance to eat onboard Space 220. Construction has also been taking place for quite a while; the location was originally set to open last Winter. So, when Disney World reopens, will the opening of Space 220 follow close behind? NO: Why Space 220 Might NOT Open Quickly After Disney World As ready as we are to enjoy a meal on a luxury spacecraft (space station?), we have to be realistic about some roadblocks the restaurant will face. Construction on the Restaurant is Paused Disney World has paused construction on all of the projects in the parks during the closure — and that includes construction on Space 220. Space 220 Construction The restaurant had an initial opening date of Winter 2019. So even though the project ran into delays that pushed back the opening, the construction is likely close to being finished, given the original timeline. But still, with all construction currently on hold, we aren’t sure how quickly teams will get back to work when the parks reopen to finish up. Here are 10 new projects in Disney World that are impacted by the closure It Will Take Time to Get Back Up and Running When Disney World is ready to reopen its gates, it won’t be as simple as flipping a switch. Disney will need to do a lot of groundwork just to get back to the basics of operation. For example, they will likely need to replenish the food stock across property, retrain Cast Members on potential health and social distancing protocols, and ensure sanitation measures are being maintained. Hand Sanitizing Station With all of the health and operational concerns that Disney will need to attend to when the parks first reopen, the opening of a new restaurant is not likely to be the top priority. We asked our readers when they would feel safe going back to Disney World and here’s what they said Disney Will Want to Highlight the Opening of Space 220 When other highly anticipated restaurants like Topolino’s Terrace have opened, Disney has made a point to shine the spotlight on them. And we definitely don’t think this restaurant will be an exception, especially considering how much hype Space 220 is getting from excited guests. Disney will want to make a big deal of the grand opening. Space 220 When the parks first reopen, we’re likely to see reduced capacity and increased focus on basic measures like keeping surfaces sanitized. That doesn’t make for a great environment for the grand opening of a restaurant that, prior to all of this, could have been loaded with media figures and important Disney team members for its launch. Here’s what you need to know about Space 220 before it opens! YES: Why Space 220 Actually Might Open Quickly After Disney World Of course, there are two sides to this story. Despite the uncertain timeline and shift in focus, there’s also reason to believe that the opening of Space 220 might follow quickly after the parks reopen. Construction is Further Along Than Other Projects As mentioned above, the construction on Space 220 was paused when the parks closed. But, even though the restaurant may not be finished completely, it has made much more progress than many other projects across Disney property. Some projects like the Mary Poppins attraction (from what we can see with our own eyes) and the refurbishment of Spaceship Earth haven’t even really begun. Epcot It is possible that Disney may choose to prioritize construction on things like Space 220 that can be finished more quickly (and with less additional financial investment) than other projects. Click here for all of the details on the Epcot transformation! Space 220 Will Generate Revenue The Walt Disney Company has been hit hard by the closures. In fact, The Orange County Register estimated that with all of the parks closed, the loss in theme park revenue will cost Disney over $500 million dollars. With the amount of money Disney is losing, we wouldn’t be surprised if they’re quick to find ways to pull in additional revenue when the parks reopen. Space 220 Concept Art ©Disney Disney will bring in money as a direct result of opening Space 220 — guests will purchase meals at the restaurant and head to the lounge for drinks and food as well. In contrast, some of their other projects won’t provide an immediate revenue boost. Space 220 Cocktails New attractions that are currently under construction like Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind might eventually inspire more guests to take a trip to Disney World down the road. But by opening Space 220, Disney will have an immediate source of additional revenue without incurring the kinds of crowds a big new ride would attract. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the cocktails we could see on the Space 220 menu! Table Service Restaurants Can Practice Social Distancing Concerns about guest safety will be at the forefront when the parks reopen. Table service restaurants are uniquely positioned as one of the easier environments to manage. Entry can be managed to conform to capacity limitations via Advance Dining Reservation allotments. And since guests are seated at their tables, it’s easier to maintain social distancing here than at a counter service restaurant or attraction where queues form. Space 220 Poster Also, since the meals will be individually prepared, Space 220 won’t face the same level of sanitary concerns as buffet restaurants where guests serve themselves. Yes…or…No? There are definite arguments for a Space 220 opening following quickly after Epcot opens…and there are arguments that can point to it being delayed even longer. The Walt Disney Company is in the process of making decisions now that will affect guest experience in the parks for the rest of the year and beyond, and we’ll be reporting all the latest updates as soon as we get them here on DFB and via our newsletter — so don’t forget to subscribe. 24. Disney World has been closed for over a month, and with one indefinite closure extension already, we’re starting to wonder when Disney World will open again. Magic Kingdom Entrance At times like these, we turn to the experts to hear what they have to say. We’ve heard predictions about the Disney parks from a bunch of assumedly smart Wall Street analysts. The problem? Their predictions all contradict one another! Analysts are saying that Disney World could reopen soon, this fall, or even next year. So, WHICH IS IT, smart people?! Will we be back in the parks closer to June — or closer to January? Or later? Let’s break it down… . Some analysts are looking to June as a reopening for Disney World. With Disney taking reservations in June and local task forces proposing phases and stages for reopening, some analysts are predicting a potential June opening for Walt Disney World. J.P. Morgan analyst Alexia Quadrani says that her teams are expecting the domestic Disney parks to reopen by June 1st, and they believe Disney could even turn a profit! Why are they saying this? So, how has Quadrani decided that June 1st is the day we’ll be back at Disney? She and her team are expecting health measures to have become less stringent around the country by that point, AND she notes that June 1st is the date that Disney is currently accepting reservations. Cinderella Castle Makeover Was Stopped Due to the Halt in Construction On top of that, things seem to be moving along in Florida one way or another. The state has already moved to begin opening different points of infrastructure. Relative to the rest of the country, Florida is quickly moving into a re-opening phase. The Governor’s office has put together the Re-Open Florida Task Force, made up of business representatives including Disney World President Josh D’Amaro, to discuss the protocols required to re-open different aspects of the economy. Josh D’Amaro Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was also quoted saying that Disney is “ahead of the curve” on reopening safely. That said, the mayor of Orange County, Florida, has noted that Disney World will be on its own timeline regardless of what the various task forces decide regarding reopening state and county businesses. Theme parks will make their own call as to when to reopen and how gradually they will do so. Click here to learn more about Disney World’s potential June opening! Some analysts predict a Disney World opening in the fall. Some analysts are not quite so optimistic. Wells Fargo analyst Steven Cahall has expressed that Disney may not open until the fall and will likely operate with significantly limited capacity well into 2021. Cahall suspects that Disney may be facing “zero park attendance” through the end of the fiscal year in September and that they will operate at only 50% capacity through fiscal 2021. Why are they saying this? The factors that went into Cahall’s analysis depend on the feeling of safety for guests going to Disney World. He expressed that the parks may need to significantly limit capacity and that people may not become truly comfortable until there is a vaccine or more testing. Tree of Life Cahall and his team at Wells Fargo acknowledge that a vaccine may not be widely distributed within the next 12 months. This explains why their attendance forecasts are on the lower side. The fall prediction is corroborated by a few other points as well. In new government guidelines, it isn’t until Phase 2 that gatherings of more than 50 people and travel are addressed. Epcot The above-mentioned Florida Task Force has also been discussing a gradual reopening of the parks. This would have the parks opening first to Florida residents, then to domestic guests, and finally to international guests. In this instance, the parks may open sooner, but Cahall’s predicted slog back to being profitable could be the reality. To read Cahall’s predictions for a fall opening, click here. Some analysts expect Disney World to remain closed through January 2021. Most recently, Disney’s stock slumped due to predictions that an opening won’t be feasible until January 2021. UBS analyst John Hodulik noted that January was a viable prediction for Disney World’s reopening. Like Cahall, he is unconvinced that Disney will be able to rebound quickly, projecting that theme park revenue could plummet a whopping 92% from last year. Why are they saying this? Hodulik noted that “crowds are unlikely to return [to Disney theme parks] in full until there is a vaccine widely available.” Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway The Florida Surgeon General actually made a statement that supports Hodulik’s prediction, pointing out that it may not be safe for large gatherings to occur until the population achieves herd immunity or a vaccine is made widely available — which could take more than a year. He cautioned that Floridians may need to get used to the health precautions, one of which is the closure of the Disney parks. Want to learn more about the January prediction? Click here. So, when can we go to Disney World again? When can guests go back to Disney World? Unfortunately, right now, it’s just not known. The analysts don’t even agree! A lot is still up in the air when it comes to the global health crisis and the decisions being made at the Walt Disney Company. It’s not really possible right now to definitively guess when we’ll be walking right down the middle of Main Street, U.S.A. again. Hello from the Magic Kingdom! What we CAN glean from these conflicting statements is that Disney is reliant on a number of factors when it comes to reopening — including their own financial situation. According to Forbes, theme park guru Dennis Spiegel has been quoted as saying, “The way people visit theme parks will never be the same again,” and it remains to be seen if and how that sentiment will be played out. Disney will work to make decisions in the interest of safety and in the interest of the company. So, whether the parks open in June or stay closed for a while, it will be based on both data that we as the general public can see and data that we can’t.
