  6. Disneyland’s reopening plan isn’t the only news coming out of California this week! Disneyland Main Entrance Orange County, in which Disneyland is located, has revised its policy regarding face masks. On May 22nd, an order was issued that required everyone to wear a face covering in public when they were unable to maintain distance between others. This was released in conjunction with the Stage 2 reopening of additional businesses in Orange County. American Threads Face Masks at Disney Springs However, as of June 11th, the face covering rule has been relaxed from a requirement to a suggested measure. Orange County is also preparing to reopen additional businesses outlined in Stage 3 of the state’s reopening plan, beginning tomorrow. 7. Now that Disneyland has submitted its proposed reopening dates and parts of Universal CityWalk in Hollywood have already begun to reopen, Califonia’s phased reopening plan seems to be chuggin’ along. Hollywood Sign Stage 3 of Governor Newsom’s plan will go into effect this Friday which will means that more locations and businesses will receive the green light to reopen. While Newsom’s plan has four stages, most of the state entered stage two in May. California’s reopening has been more gradual than other parts of the country and Newsom says counties still have the option of moving forward slower than the rest of the state if they choose to do so. Universal Studios Dine-in restaurants, houses of worship, hair salons, and non-essential retail stores were allowed to reopen last month at each counties’ discretion. Once stage 3 begins on Friday, the following locations may resume assuming all health guidelines and necessary safety precautions (limited capacity, social distancing, increased sanitation) are implemented: Schools Day Camps Bars Gyms Campgrounds Professional Sports For schools and day camps, only counties that are below the threshold of cases will be permitted to reopen (which almost every county meets). The state will provide further guidance (including rules) on how hotels, casinos, museums, zoos, and aquariums can safely operate as well as the filming of television and movie productions and recording of music can resume. Universal Studios Hollywood Since California officials have stated Disneyland will be allowed to reopen in stage three, we’re eager to see if the proposed dates are finalized soon. 8. If you’ve been to Tokyo Disney Resort, Shanghai Disney Resort, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort or Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, you might be familiar with Duffy & Friends, an original Walt Disney Imagineering story. So, the story goes, one day in Cape Cod, Mickey Mouse the sailor was leaving on a long sea voyage. Minnie Mouse didn’t want Mickey to be lonely, so she hand-sewed him a cuddly teddy bear to keep him company and gave the bear to Mickey in a duffel bag, which inspired him to name the bear “Duffy.” Together, Duffy and Mickey share adventures – big and small – and make new friends along the way. Check out one of Duffy’s many adventures in this new “Morning Glory” video. Duffy and his friends – ShellieMay, Gelatoni, StellaLou, CookieAnn and ‘Olu Mel – plant, in their little garden, the morning glory seeds Duffy had received from Mickey. They work together and eagerly watch as the plants grow – until a small, unexpected hiccup happens. Find out what happens next and how the friends come together to overcome all with a message of love, teamwork and friendship. If you looked closely in the video you might even notice that Duffy the Disney Bear resembles Mickey with similar markings on his feet and face! There are endless possibilities tied to the loveable and huggable bear and you can be part of the adventures too by using the hashtag #DuffyandFriends on social media to share your adventures with Duffy and his friends. 9. Since Disney World is reopening on July 11th and other theme parks in Florida are also getting back to business, tourist travel may start to increase at places like Orlando International Airport (MCO). ©Orlando International Airport Between the Re-Open Florida Task Force discussing ways to keep people safe and the possible $25 billion airline rescue package, airports are working towards preparing for more passengers to make their way back into planes. According to Spectrum News 13, the Orlando International Airport has released a questionnaire to gauge whether people feel comfortable flying, what types of travel they’re interested in, and how often they expect themselves to travel over the next six to 12 months. Orlando International Airport The questionnaire asks people whether they will be traveling domestically or internationally; for business, leisure, or to visit friends and relatives; and what means of transportation they plan on using for their trips. Orlando International Airport “The leisure market is going to come back first domestically, then what we call ‘VFR’ — visiting friends and relatives — and then the business,” Orlando International Airport’s senior director of marketing and air service development Vicki Jaramillo said. At this time, they’ve noticed that “over 65%” of the 1,000-plus respondents have said they would feel comfortable flying again soon. Star Wars United Airlines Plane ©United However, there has been a drop by 90% in airport travel at MCO. It was previously the busiest airport in Florida over the past year, but MCO is considering cutting $226 million from the new Terminal C’s construction budget and reducing the number of new gates from 19 to 15. Orange County International Airport The Orlando International Airport has still put measures in place to keep travelers and employees safe, like frequent cleaning of high-touch areas, the use of protective equipment such as eye wear and masks, and new TSA regulations. Other airports like Daytona Beach International Airport have implemented a “Ready to Fly Initiative” with protective barriers, distancing signs, and personal care kits for passengers. ©Orlando International Airport If you want to take part in the Orlando International Airport’s survey, you can fill it out here! While travel may look different for a while, airports are still moving forward to make sure they bring travelers back. We’ll keep you updated with more information about airport changes here! 10. Disney World and Disneyland will be implementing many costly new procedures to help ensure the safety of guests and Cast Members upon the reopening of their theme parks. Disney World All of these potential health measures and capacity cuts mean that Disney could be in a tough position — losing money to be able to make it again. Prior to the reopening announcement, we explored the financial impacts of opening the theme parks versus keeping them closed. With the parks officially reopening, some analysts are noting what Disney will need to do to make money again. Disney hasn’t and won’t be generating anywhere close to the pre-closure levels of revenue in the Parks, Experience, and Products sector for a while. In an earnings call that took place last month, Disney CEO Bob Chapek noted that the company would not reopen any park unless it would ultimately generate profit. It’s Chewbacca! So, with the Disney World parks reopening and Disneyland set to follow soon after, Disney may have determined what levels of capacity the parks need to maintain to keep a profit going. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Bernstein analyst Todd Juengar has estimated that Disney will need to maintain 25 percent of normal [pre-global health crisis] run-rate attendance to turn a profit. Magic Kingdom Sign The 25% attendance assertion is interesting. Disney has not made any indication as to how steeply park capacity will be reduced. If Juengar is correct, we may see it cut down to that 25% figure. Disneyland Shanghai saw a similar capacity decrease with a figure somewhere below 30% pre-closure attendance. When we looked into this topic a month ago, we noted that at current operating cost, Disney would be operating at a loss if they lowered capacity by any more than 28%. Still, we also explored the fact that operating costs will greatly decrease as well with the continued closure of many attractions, resort hotels, dining experiences, and more. Take into account the cuts to operational costs and a less than 30% capacity opening starts to seem likely. Cinderella Castle Again, Disney executives have explained that they do not intend to publicly release reopening capacity figures at this time. It seems that we’ll have to determine if Juengar (and our) predictions are right once the parks reopen and we can see how crowded (or not-crowded) they are. Chapek said that guests would have to be “lucky enough” to access the new theme park reservation system, so we can assume that capacity will be significantly limited — maybe even all the way down to 25%. 22. We are BACK at Ghirardelli Soda Fountain & Chocolate Shop in Disney Springs… because ice cream is always a good idea! Don’t you agree? Ghirardelli Soda Fountain & Chocolate Shop On our recent visit upon Ghirardelli’s reopening, we enjoyed the new version of an old favorite concoction: the Gold Rush Sundae. And today we were happy to find a NEW item — joined by some returning favorites — just added to the menu! When Ghirardelli first reopened its doors at the end of May, it returned with a fairly limited menu. Ghirardelli Menu Do you remember that one?! Find out why we love the Crissy Field Sundae here! Nacho Sundae The Nacho Sundae is served up with three scoops of your choice of ice cream on top of Cinnamon Sugar Pita Chips, all covered with whipped cream and a sprinkling of nuts. Nacho Sundae And what’s any Sundae — even a non-traditional Nacho Sundae — without a cherry on top?! Nacho Sundae We went with Vanilla, Strawberry, and Mint Chocolate Chip for our flavors… and, let me tell you, they did NOT skimp on those scoops! Nacho Sundae The chips, by the way, are super tasty along with providing some nice crunch to the sundae. They totally reminded us of a slightly crunchier version of Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal! Nacho Sundae (Of course, while you can use them to scoop up the ice cream, you’re going to want to grab a spoon for this one!) Nacho Sundae And they’ve done it again! Just when you think Ghirardelli couldn’t possibly come up with any more spectacular specialty sundaes… they DO!
