  3. When The LEGO Store reopened on May 27th at Disney Springs, we were curious to see how our shopping experience would be different! The LEGO Store Turns out, a lot had changed! Guests were NOT allowed to approach the shelves or touch ANY products inside the LEGO Store and Pick a Brick was no longer available. But today, it looks like Pick a Brick is back –only it’s being done a little bit differently. We were used to filling our own plastic containers for Pick a Brick along the brick wall, but now the process is even easier. Pick a Brick You simply look at the brick menu, fill out a Pick a Brick form, and a Brick Specialist will scoop your order of bricks for you! Brick Menu Small cups of bricks sell for $8.99, and large cups sell for $15.99 and you can specify whether you want a quarter scoop, half scoop, or full scoop! Pick a Brick And The LEGO Store is also throwing in a free extra scoop of bricks to make up for guests not being able to scoop ’em themselves! They come in bright yellow LEGO bag! Free Bricks! They’re also selling already-made LEGO Figure Packs for $10 which include five LEGO figures instead of the standard three since you can’t fill them yourself! LEGO Figure Packs We’ll be looking forward to scooping our own LEGO bricks someday, but at least there’s a great workaround in place until that day comes! Did you see Disney just re-released this sold-out Minnie Mouse: The Main Attraction item? Click here to learn more! Are you looking forward to building up your LEGO collection? 6. When Disney World temporarily closed in March, it raised A LOT of questions for Annual Passholders! Walt Disney World Annual Passholder Shortly after the theme parks’ temporary closure was updated to “until further notice,” Passholders who had paid in full were told their Disney World Annual Passes would be automatically extended for the number of days the parks remained closed. Well, we’ve been getting concerned that those extensions still haven’t come, and we’re hoping to make Theme Park reservations soon. But there seems to be some Annual Pass movement today. One Annual Passholder reached out to say that their expiration date had in fact been extended by the length of the closure. Here’s a screenshot, taken yesterday, of the original date for the extended Florida Resident Disney Weekday Select Annual Pass… Original Annual Pass Expiration …and here’s the updated date screenshot, taken today! That’s 117 days added to that Annual Pass. Extended Annual Pass Expiration As a reminder, Disney World will have been closed for 117 days when the parks reopen — from March 15th through July 11th. Annual Passes should be extended by the number of active days on your individual pass that were impacted by the closure. At press time, none of the Annual Passholders on our team are seeing any changes to their original Annual Pass expiration dates yet. Learn more about Disney World’s new Annual Passholder policies here! Keep in mind — Disney World will only be extending Annual Passes for members that have already paid in full or haven’t chosen to waive their payments. If you are on a monthly payment plan and have opted out of paying for your membership while the parks have been closed, your Disney World Annual Pass will expire on its original date. MMRR Annual Passholder pin We’ll be keeping a close eye on the situation to see if Annual Pass extensions begin to roll out in full. Drop us a line @DisneyFoodBlog on instagram or twitter if you see movement on your pass expiration date so that we can let our readers know. If you have any questions regarding your Disney World Annual Pass, you should call V.I.PASSHOLDER Support at (407)939-7277. 9. Hong Kong Disneyland is welcoming guests once again on June 18, 2020. And we imagine many guests are looking forward to that iconic view of the Castle that awaits them upon entering the park. Hong Kong Disneyland Disney previously announced a transformation of Sleeping Beauty Castle into the Castle of Magical Dreams, and guests will be treated to an in-person look as the park reopens. In the meantime, though, we can have a look now, as Twitter user @CyberbbLawrence has shared a few photos of the transformation! The Castle will eventually serve as a backdrop for entertainment offerings including a daytime show as well as a nighttime spectacular. And Bibbibi Bobbidi Boutique will be tucked inside, too! Of course, the reopening of Hong Kong Disneyland will be accompanied by many new experiences in the park as part of new protocols in place so guests may enjoy the reopened park safely. These measures include a new theme park reservation system to limit guest capacity, and additional safety measures which you can see in a video provided to prepare guests for their visit to Hong Kong Disneyland. For information about the upcoming reopening of Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort, you can also visit any of the links below. What do you think of the Castle of Magical Dreams? 12. Major aspects of the theme parks and attractions in California are beginning to reopen! We recently went on a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood to see what was up at CityWalk, which reopened to the public on June 10! Main Entrance to Universal Studios Hollywood After our first trip to CityWalk in Orlando, we were eager to see how the two shopping and dining districts compared! Much of what we saw was the same, but there were a couple of major differences! Parking and Entering Arriving at Universal Studios Hollywood CityWalk was a breeze! The current operating hours at CityWalk are 12:00PM through 8:00PM daily, and we arrived just after opening. Welcome to Universal Studios Hollywood! There was no line of cars to get into the parking garage, which was our first sign that CityWalk would be totally quiet! Hardly no cars entering the parking garage at CityWalk Folks visiting CityWalk are directed to park in the Jurassic Parking garage. Jurassic Parking Garage Like CityWalk in Orlando, self-parking is staggered, with every other space coned off. In Orlando, those coned off spaces were eventually filled as more cars came in, but it was so quiet the day we visited Hollywood, there was no need to do so! Staggered parking at CityWalk Then it was time to head towards security, where the temperature screenings would take place! But first, we noticed one MAJOR difference from what we saw (or rather, didn’t see) in Orlando. Universal Studios Hollywood is selling face masks BEFORE you go through security. Vending machine selling face masks The vending machine is located just before the temperature check, where you can purchase washable masks for $7.00 each… Face masks for sale! …you could also purchase tubes of hand sanitizer, also $7.00 each. Hand sanitizer for sale! You could also purchase various multi-packs. One pack sold two 3-ply masks, while another pack sold masks and gloves! Again, these were $7.00 each. Multi-pack of face masks and gloves As long as you were stocked up and wearing your face masks, you could proceed to security and the temperature screening! Orlando’s CityWalk only had face masks and hand sanitizer for sale AFTER you passed through security! Learn more here. Temperature Checks The temperature check was a breeze! This was in part due to the fact that hardly no one else was in line with us, but also because the temperature check itself is quick and easy. Before getting your temperature checked, there are a couple of spots to get hand sanitizer, and a board with all the safety information you need to know. Signage and hand sanitizer heading into security There were a couple of security Team Members stationed to take your temperature. Temperature check at CityWalk The process was very similar to what we experienced in Orlando, just with fewer people! Temperature check After our temperature was taken, we briskly entered CityWalk to check the place out! Learn more about our experience with temperature checks at Orlando’s CityWalk here! Walking Around, Signage, and Restrooms Like we’ve seen at both CityWalk and Disney Springs, signage was abundant throughout the area. The first sign we spotted was soon after we parked, well before we reached security. Signage at CityWalk Once we passed security, there was additional signage as soon as we entered CityWalk. Signage at CityWalk The reminders to observe physical distancing were abundant! Signage at Universal Studios Hollywood CityWalk It was extremely easy to observe physical distancing when we visited because it was literally empty! An empty CityWalk at Universal Studios Hollywood! And, in case we needed the reminder, there were signs to tell us that the theme park was still closed. CityWalk In the restrooms, there was some signage to remind us of the sanitary precautions we could take to mitigate the risk of spreading the virus. We noticed that every other sink in the restrooms was “closed.” Restrooms at CityWalk When it’s time to leave CityWalk, several signs were present with QR codes for guests to scan to take a survey on their experience. QR code survey at CityWalk There was definitely plenty of signage to make sure everyone was informed and up-to-date on the health and safety procedures Universal had put in place! Universal Studios Hollywood is looking to reopen its theme park in July! Learn more here. Dining We made a couple of food stops along the way during our visit! Our first stop was Johnny Rockets! Johnny Rockets This is where we saw another MAJOR difference from Orlando. We were given traditional, reusable menus at our table! Something we didn’t think we would see: a REUSABLE menu! Other than the menus, we noticed a lot of the typical measurements taken by table service restaurants. Seating was staggered to every other table (again, it was so empty it was hard to even notice!). Staggered seating at Johnny Rockets And, of course, we had to grab some fries and a shake! When in Rome, you order chili cheese fries and a chocolate milkshake! Yummmmm There were some other minor things we noticed, like a lack of gloves on the staff (they were all, of course, wearing face coverings). While none of the health measures were lined out for us when we visited, the protocol was still visible. Johnny Rockets Our next stop was Voodoo Doughnut! We stopped by the Orlando location so we had to see how Hollywood’s measured up! Voodoo Doughnut In case the crowds do get busy, Voodoo Doughnut had an extended outdoor queue area with physical distancing floor markers ready to go! Physical distancing floor markers in the extended queue outside Voodoo Doughnut Inside, the floor markers continued. An employee was present to make sure parties did not get too close together. Physical distancing floor markers at Voodoo Doughnuts We were given a disposable menu (or a “souvenir menu” as they called it) for us to make the incredibly difficult decision of choosing which doughnuts we wanted. Voodoo Doughnut disposable menu! When it was time to order, the register had a sneeze guard to keep everyone extra safe. Sneeze guard at Voodoo Doughnut Don’t worry! All of the doughnuts were just as delicious as we would expect! Voodoo Doughnut Voodoo Doughnut in Hollywood was beyond prepared to welcome back guests, and we saw multiple instances of distancing and added safety procedures! Read more about what dining was like at Orlando’s CityWalk here! Overall, the crowds were much lower than what we saw in Orlando. When we visited Hollywood, there was a limited amount of dining locations and shops available to visit. We would imagine that as more things open, the crowd level may go up. Catch up on our trip to a reopened Universal Orlando here! Have you visited CityWalk in either Orlando or Hollywood? What was your experience like? Let us know in the comments! Ohana Appetizers featuring Honey-Coriander Chicken Wings But before you choose your sauce, here’s the recipe for those WINGS! Ingredients — Coriander Chicken Wings 1 tablespoon coarse salt 2 tablespoons paprika 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon turmeric 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 4 tablespoons canola oil 4 pounds chicken wings or drumettes, patted dry Ingredients — Honey Sauce 1 tablespoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1 tablespoon ground coriander 2 tablespoons lime juice 1/2 cup soy sauce 1 cup honey 3/4 cup water 2 tablespoons cornstarch Instructions — Coriander Chicken Wings Preheat oven to 500°F, with racks in upper and lower thirds. Line two rimmed baking sheets with foil and spray with nonstick cooking spray. Combine all ingredients except chicken in large glass bowl; stir to combine. Add chicken and toss to coat. Divide chicken in single layer between prepared baking sheets and bake until browned and completely cooked through, about 35 minutes, rotating baking sheets on racks and turning chicken halfway through cooking. Instructions — Honey Sauce While wings are baking, combine ingredients in small saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to boil, stirring occasionally, until liquid thickens and reduces to a syrup, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and cool for 10 minutes. Brush or toss baked chicken with wing sauce to coat. 25. This June marks National Safety Month – a month that acknowledges the importance of safety in the workplace, as well as in our communities, through education, leadership and advocacy. At Disney, safety is an important tenet and it starts with our cast members. Our dedicated cast members are at the heart of every great Disney experience, and the secret to the magic. It’s for that reason that Disney’s Four Keys – including Safety, Courtesy, Show and Efficiency – were created to serve as a compass for our cast members to create happiness and serve others. Safety is the first key as a reminder that it is a top priority in the decisions we make – both for our cast members, and for our guests. It’s a foundation that was introduced by Walt Disney himself many decades ago. It takes a variety of highly talented team members in different roles, working together to promote a healthy and safe environment at our Disney Parks and stores. And as we continue with the phased reopening of our parks, resorts and stores around the world, we’re excited to introduce you to a just a few of these professionals who are helping shape, monitor and implement our enhanced health and safety measures. They’re working closely with industry groups, research universities and public health agencies to promote safe practices while we work, stay, and play at Disney parks, resorts and Disney stores. Meet some of our team members Dr. Pamela Hymel – Chief Medical Officer, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Dr. Pamela Hymel has been with Disney for nearly 10 years, serving as the Chief Medical Officer for Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, where she’s responsible for developing global occupational health and wellness strategy, as well as managing domestic occupational medicine clinics and programs, guest first aid services and wellness programs. Dr. Hymel received her MD from Louisiana State University in New Orleans and a master’s in public health from Tulane University. From there, she went on to do her Internal Medicine and Occupational Medicine training at University of California, Irvine and is board certified in both areas. “The programs I work on give me an opportunity to improve the health and wellness of our cast members,” said Dr. Hymel. “An example of an initiative we introduced at Disney is how our health and wellness team developed the Incredible Athlete pilots at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. The program really integrated physical conditioning instruction with education on sleep and nutrition for optimum performance and is designed to help prevent injuries from occurring. It is very rewarding to know we are helping our cast optimize their performance at home and at work.” Katie Kelly – Vice President, Worldwide Safety Services Katie Kelly began her Disney journey nearly 17 years ago as a professional intern. Now, she serves as the Vice President of Worldwide Safety Services for Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, where she’s responsible for developing and implementing safety programs that keep the wellness of cast members and guests top of mind. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and master’s degree in Engineering Management from University of Central Florida, she went on to become a licensed professional engineer in the states of Florida and California. “The best part about working at Disney is that you get to share what you do with your kids,” said Kelly. “Seeing the joy that my kids have from visiting one of our theme parks is what drives my passion for the job. I want every one of our cast members to be able to experience that joy with their own family and that starts with promoting their safety here at work so that they can go home and enjoy time with their families at the end of the day.” Dr. Michael Hankins – Chief Physician, Walt Disney World Dr. Michael Hankins has been with Disney for more than 27 years and serves as the Chief Physician at Walt Disney World Resort. In his role, he provides care for cast members at the Occupational Health Clinic within the park, as well as developing improvements to support the safety of all cast. Dr. Hankins received his MD from University of Florida and a master’s in public health from Medical College of Wisconsin. From there, he went on to develop a background in Family Medicine with a strong emphasis on preventing illness and injury. In 1995, he worked to computerize our medical operation before most other medical clinics. Today, he is proud to provide cast members with the same level of medical care that he would expect his family to receive. “The major focus throughout my career has been to advocate for and work toward improving the health and wellness of all cast members,” said Dr. Hankins. “Seeing the ongoing efforts within Disney aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of our cast members and preventing workplace injuries makes it easy for me to remain committed to support these efforts.” Dr. Gabriel Guo – Chief Physician, Shanghai Disney Resort Dr. Gabriel Guo has been with Disney for five years, currently serving as the Chief Physician of Shanghai Disney Resort, leading the resort’s medical team that consists of doctors, nurses and other healthcare specialists. Having studied Clinical Medicine at Peking University in Beijing, China, his team provides health services to both cast members and guests at the resort. In response to COVID-19 related questions from cast members, a special “Ask Dr. Guo” segment was established, allowing Dr. Guo to answer a variety of health-related topics raised by cast members through a question and answer series. “I believe that what my team and I do makes a difference, since we have the expertise to try to help those who aren’t feeling well,” said Dr. Guo. “We can help our guests and cast members have a healthy and happy experience at our park.” Joseph Yip – Director of Security, Safety, Fire and Health Services, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort Joseph Yip has been with Hong Kong Disneyland Resort for 15 years, currently serving as the Director of Security, Safety, Fire and Health Services. In his role, he is responsible for developing and coordinating Disney’s safety and health efforts at the resort for cast members and guests. Having studied management science at University of Wales, UK, Joseph brings decades of experience to his role at the resort. He was an advocate for the creation of the Safety & Wellness Council and Committee, aimed to help leaders focus on guest safety methods, safety and wellness policies, and programs for cast members. Since 2006, HKDL has received more than 350 safety and wellness awards from different organizations. “Family, happiness and good memories are the three key drivers that keep me always looking for opportunities to enhance the safety and wellness for our guests, cast members and loved ones,” said Joseph. “Safety is not just a core value of our business – but also an important part of our lives.” Dr. Nicolas Duport – Medical Doctor, Disneyland Paris Dr. Nicolas Duport joined the Disneyland Paris team earlier this year, currently serving as a Medical Doctor for the resort. In his role, he is responsible for proposing preventative health measures that aim to benefit the health and wellness of the resort’s cast members. Alongside his colleague, Dr. Cyril Warmberg, they coordinate closely with health, safety and security teams to ensure safety remains the top priority at the resort. Dr. Duport received his master’s in epidemiology and public health at the University of Nancy I, followed by his doctorate in medicine at the University of Paris VII. He also received his diploma of specialized studies in public health and social medicine in 2003. He previously worked for Santé Publique France, the French equivalent of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as a scientific project manager for nearly 15 years. He also received his qualification in occupational medicine at the University of Reims earlier this year before starting his role with the Disneyland Paris team. “There are many things unique to Disneyland Paris that I find really exciting, including a diversity of professions, a complete medical team of eight doctors working together within and to support a commercial business – which is very rare in France – and the chance to use all of my specialties in one place,” Dr. Duport said. These professionals, along with their colleagues and teams will continue to work with their local industry partners, as well as health and government authorities to promote the health and safety of guests and cast members. We’re looking forward to welcoming all of you back to our Disney parks, resorts and stores. Until we are together once again, we wish you and your families’ health, hope, and happiness!
