Shanghai Disneyland and Hong Kong Disneyland have already been welcoming guests back into the parks in China. Shanghai Disneyland However, since this unprecedented situation constantly changes, Disney has had to make a few tough decisions outside of the parks in China. Shine News has reported that Disney English will no longer be available in China after operating for 12 years. Disney English opened its learning centers with English-immersion classes that included storytelling, singing, and interactive games as a way to educate people in the country. ©Disney The first Disney English location was debuted in Shanghai in October 2008, before making its way across the country with 26 learning centers (10 of which are based in Shanghai). Over 100,000 children ages 2 through 12 have been able to expand upon their language skills through Disney’s programs. ©WaltDisneyImagineering on Instagram — Shanghai Disneyland reopening However, classes were closed in-person in January due to health concerns, and online classes were offered starting March 19th. The Walt Disney Company Executive Vice President Mahesh Samat has stated that “Over the past few years, we have noticed a shift in consumer preferences toward online learning experiences and this trend has been accelerated by the global pandemic as families are hesitant to resume in-person supplemental learning classes.” Hong Kong Disneyland He went on to comment that “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to not reopen the centers. We are ensuring that each family of a Disney English learner is refunded accordingly, and we are taking care of each and every one of our affected cast members.” Shanghai Disneyland Disney has notified parents that they are able to apply for refunds through July 21st. In order to visit the learning centers in person, parents should make an appointment. Anyone coming inside the Disney English locations will be required to wear masks, show their health QR codes, and bring their ID cards, bank cards, and contracts to receive a refund. The Disney World parks are currently set to reopen in mid-July. Magic Kingdom And, while we are now able to book vacation packages for 2021, guests still can’t purchase tickets or hotel reservations for dates in the remainder of 2020. So, what’s the deal? With all of the moving parts surrounding the reopening of Disney World, it can be tough to decode what’s really going on — and why! Officially, Disney has stated that they will open up ticket sales and hotel reservations for the rest of 2020 “later this summer.” Although, as the situation progresses, this timeframe is subject to change. ©Disney So, why the hold-up on 2020 tickets and hotel reservations? This comes down to the limited park capacity that will be implemented upon reopening. Prior to the closure, Disney was selling park tickets for 2020 dates based on full capacity. Now that they’ve released that park capacity will need to be greatly reduced this year, they want to ensure those who’ve already purchased a ticket for 2020 are able to visit. Animal Kingdom Entrance Essentially, the goal is to determine how many people currently have tickets AND how many are still planning to come to Disney World so that they’re not overselling the limited capacity theme parks. If the number of guests currently holding tickets already meets (or exceeds) the park capacity for the year, opening up ticket sales for 2020 would allow guests to purchase tickets that couldn’t be used. Tower of Terror Once those with 2020 tickets have made their Disney Park Pass reservations, Disney will determine whether they have any additional capacity in 2020 and if so, they’ll open up ticket sales at a later date. Mission: SPACE With all of the new policies and procedures, it can be tough to figure out exactly what’s happening with your Disney World vacation plans. Which is why we’re keeping a close eye on things as they unfold, to help break it down! If (or when) Disney World ticket sales are resumed for 2020, we’ll report back with the details! Learn more about the new Disney Park Pass reservation system! Are YOU looking to get Disney World tickets for 2020? Let us know in the comments! Souvenir popcorn buckets The popcorn bucket frenzy is real, my friends. These come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and once new designs arrive in the parks, they can sell out FAST. Hiya, Pluto! The souvenir popcorn buckets switch out frequently throughout the year, so what’s available one day may be totally different the next day! Expect special buckets to appear around the holidays as well! The parks are the only place where these items are released, however, which makes them ultra-special! Simba Popcorn Bucket Some of our favorites over the past few years have been the Skyliner popcorn bucket, baby Simba, and of course the annual holiday Pluto bucket! Holiday Pluto Popcorn Bucket Disneyland even released a special retro popcorn box earlier this year, similar to the original popcorn boxes from decades ago! Families will bring their kiddos back over time to get silhouettes as they grow, and you can even add your pets to the collection, too! You can find Silhouette artists on Main Street, U.S.A. and Liberty Square in Magic Kingdom, in the France Pavilion in Epcot, and in Disney Springs. In Disneyland, their Silhouette Studio on Main Street has been open since one day after Disneyland’s opening day in 1955! Come along on a food tour of Main Street, U.S.A.! As you can see, park exclusive merchandise isn’t too hard to find! You just need to know where to look. As Disney World’s Resorts have started to re-open, we’ve headed back to explore the pools, say hello to characters, dine at some of our favorite spots, and shop ’till we drop! Bay Lake Tower Although the resorts were relatively empty when we visited, we still noticed a lot of changes put in place around the hotels. Since this is an unprecedented situation, Disney is looking to continue making every experience better and safer for guests visiting Disney World. After our stay at Disney’s Bay Lake Tower, we received an extremely detailed survey about our experience at the resort. While it may seem long (it took a bit of time to complete!), these surveys help Disney continue to expand upon their existing guidelines and create new ones based on the feedback they are given. Resort Re-Opening Survey The resort re-opening survey took the time to ask questions about the guests’ perception of the cleanliness in the rooms (which now feature plastic around many of the high-touch objects)… Resort Re-Opening Survey …allowing you to provide comments along the way about why you gave certain questions a specific rating. Resort Re-Opening Survey Cleanliness in public areas was also an important point to Walt Disney World… Resort Re-Opening Survey …as well as the health and safety measures that were in place at the resorts. As we explored, the biggest surprise to us was that the hotels aren’t requiring temperature checks at the moment. Resort Re-Opening Survey There were also questions about guests’ views on specific health and safety measures, like distancing, face masks, and hand-washing and hand-sanitizing stations. Resort Re-Opening Survey The survey went on to ask permission to use information obtained from our MagicBand or theme park ticket so they can use answers to our questions that best pertained to our experiences. Resort Re-Opening Survey The survey continued to go into detail about the Pre-Arrival Health Acknowledgement… Resort Re-Opening Survey …our own perception of the health and safety procedures we noticed… Resort Re-Opening Survey …and our awareness of the changing re-opening plans at Disney World that could affect our stay. Resort Re-Opening Survey Since there is now the ability to use Mobile Check-in, Disney wanted to know if we skipped in-person visitation… Resort Re-Opening Survey …and if we had to talk to the Front Desk for assistance (even though our experience with the new virtual chat feature was kind of a mess). Resort Re-Opening Survey We also thought it was interesting that Disney wanted feedback on our virtual experiences after we used multiple online features, like Mobile Dine Check-in. Resort Re-Opening Survey At the end of the survey, we were asked about safety and security at the Disney Resorts. Resort Re-Opening Survey Since the ball is rolling with Disney World’s phased re-opening, we’re curious to see how the resorts incorporate the feedback from these surveys into their everyday operations. As more resorts start to re-open around the property, there could always be changes made and new guidelines put in place to better assist guests and Cast Members. Just last Monday, Disney launched the all-new Disney Park Pass theme park reservations system to help manage capacity in the parks during the reopening. Magic Kingdom The first round of the Disney Park Pass opened to guests with existing resort reservations on June 22nd with the second round opening up for Annual Passholders on June 26th. Now, Disney Park Passes are available for all guests with existing park tickets — even those WITHOUT a resort reservation! Availability just opened up today for all those ticket holders without Annual Passes or resort reservations. These guests are able to make a reservation for each day of entry for the number of days they have tickets. As a reminder, Park hopping is temporarily suspended, so they will be limited to one park per day. Ticket Holder Park Pass Availability If this is the first chance you’ve had to access the system, you might be worried that some days will be completely booked up. Well, don’t worry! Disney set aside park availability so that those with existing park tickets would be able to access their desired park. As of now, you can book reservations through September 26th, 2021. Epcot Entrance in Walt Disney World While some days had originally booked up at certain parks, Disney added more park passes to the formerly “sold-out” dates so that Annual Passholders would have the opportunity to snag them. Passholders quickly snatched up many of the available passes for the initial month of reopening. In fact, while a few readers noted that they got them, we never saw availability to Magic Kingdom on opening day (July 11th) for Passholders, but currently all other categories can still get Park Passes to that park on that day. Here’s the Passholder availability calendar at the time of writing: Passholder Park Pass Availability This means that for most days in July, for example, Passholders without a hotel reservation have limited to no options for a Park Pass, but there’s still plenty available for standard ticket holders and hotel guests. Disney has not said if they plan to give Passholders more options as we get closer to the reopening. Guests with existing hotel reservations (who got the first crack at the system on Monday) still have wide-open availability outside of the initial reopening week, which has seen a few parks “sell out.” Resort Guest Park Pass Availability Due to the separate groups of Park Pass allotments, this means certain guests actually have interesting options when it comes to booking. Do you have a hotel reservation AND standard tickets purchased? Maybe consider unlinking your Hotel Reservation so, in the system, you’ll get the standard ticket holder options (which have more options currently than what hotel guests have). When in doubt, call or chat with Disney directly for help. Disney Park Pass reservations are subject to availability so hurry over if you want to ensure park entry! You’ll need valid admission AND a Disney Park Pass reservation to enter the parks when they reopen. Note that the system seems to be running smoothly at the time of writing this. Earlier this week, hotel guests were met with a crashing website and an overloaded system. This seems to be working much more efficiently now. All eyes are on Disney as they prepare to reopen Disney World’s theme parks! While we have every confidence that Disney is thinking everything through a thousand times over, there are still a few things we hope Disney doesn’t mess up! Disney World After visiting Disney Springs every day since its reopening in addition to Universal Orlando and CityWalk at Universal Studios Hollywood, we’ve learned a thing or two about what mistakes we DON’T want to see Disney make when the parks reopen! Please don’t make us wish you had a virtual queue system! One of the biggest surprises as we await the reopening of Disney World was the news that the theme parks will NOT be using virtual queues upon reopening. We saw virtual queue systems implemented at Universal Orlando, and it seemed like the obvious solution for Disney as well to address the concern of physical distancing within the parks. Rise of the Resistance We know now that no rides or attractions, including Rise of the Resistance, will utilize virtual queues — at least at the beginning. Instead, every ride and attraction will use traditional standby queues. With FastPass+ currently suspended and no Single Rider lines available, Disney will have additional queue space available to accommodate parties at six feet apart. Physical distancing at Universal Orlando We also know that Disney has stated that the capacity in their parks will be reduced, as it has been in Shanghai Disneyland. Disney will also utilize its Park Pass reservation system to further limit crowds. So, it may be that Disney anticipates no need for a virtual queue system to help control crowds. Haunted Mansion We hope that Disney’s decision to eliminate the possibility of virtual queues was the right one! It’s possible some systems may be implemented in the future, similar to how Shanghai Disneyland did not have virtual queues at first but are now rolling out a Standby Pass. Only time will tell! Learn more about Disney’s decision to NOT utilize virtual queues here. Please don’t rely too heavily on paper menus, and instead push digital! As restaurants have begun to reopen around Disney World, QR Code-based menus are the name of the game now! These digitally accessed menus are contactless and easily updated. Restaurants throughout the resort should be prepared for the necessity of paper menus for those without smartphones. That said, we hope that those restaurants have those on reserve for guests who truly need them. Raglan Road paper menu Giving paper menus out to only those who specifically request them will drastically reduce the amount of waste that all those paper menus will surely create! Wine Bar George QR Code for Digital Menus Digital menus are becoming more and more common throughout Disney Springs and the reopened Disney World hotels. Plus, with the huge strides Disney has taken lately to be more “green,” digital menus seem to be the perfect solution for the current global situation AND to further their green initiatives! QR Code for Digital Menu Disney can also continue to push mobile order at their counter service locations, as long as it doesn’t malfunction! We noticed a few technical bugs with the mobile order system at Universal Orlando, but Disney has been heavily pushing their Mobile Order system pre-closure, so they might not see the same troubles. Mobile Order at Universal Orlando The digital experience at dining locations is also being introduced before you even sit down to enjoy your meal! Disney recently announced that they are rolling out Mobile Dine Check-In, which allows you to check-in for your Advance Dining Reservation via My Disney Experience, skipping the host stand entirely. Learn more about the NEW Mobile Dine Check-In here! Please don’t make it too difficult to find masks for purchase! So far it seems as though most major theme parks are not handing out face masks for free. Disney has stated on multiple occasions that face coverings are required for all guests above the age of two for entry and must remain on for the duration of your stay at Disney World and Disneyland when the parks and resorts reopen. American Threads Face Masks at Disney Springs The exceptions to this rule are when you are seated at a dining location, you are eating or drinking on the go (your mask can be lifted temporarily to take a sip or a bite), or in the announced “relaxation zones” that Disney said may be a part of the park experience. These will be similar to the “URest Zones” we saw at Universal Orlando. URest Area Entrance It goes without saying that having access to masks is key! Plus, when you consider the likelihood of folks losing their masks, it needs to be as easy as possible to find new masks for purchase. Vera Bradley Face Masks Universal Orlando as well as Disney Springs and Disney World hotels have several retail locations that sell masks, but we wouldn’t complain if we saw even more locations AND even more varieties. We’ve learned one type of mask doesn’t necessarily work for everyone, so having a few options would be handy. Face masks for sale at Bayview Gifts We enjoyed the system at CityWalk Universal Studios Hollywood. There, we spotted a vending machine before you pass security that sold disposable as well as washable face masks! Vending machine selling face masks Many guests will not think to pack a spare mask or two for everyone in their party…for every single day, and purchasing masks should be as easy as possible! Click here to read everything you need to know about wearing a face mask in Disney World! Please don’t limit the number of places we can at least get a glimpse of the characters! Perhaps the most jarring change guests will experience when visiting a reopened Disney World and Disneyland is the lack of character meet and greets, which have been temporarily suspended. In addition to that, all character dining has been canceled, with the one exception that we know of so far at Topolino’s Terrace. Topolino’s Terrace Breakfast a la Art Characters As much as we understand the need to keep guests and Cast Members safe, there is surely pent up demand for a photo of Mickey Mouse! Now, we do know that Disney World has announced that Character Cavalcades will take place throughout the day in each park. Mickey Mouse Having multiple character experiences throughout the day should lessen the likelihood of large crowds forming. If guests know there are plenty of chances to see the characters and Disney makes these encounters plentiful, there will be less demand — and less overcrowding — to catch that ONE show or that ONE cavalcade. Will we see more mini-cavalcades when the parks reopen? This was something we saw go EXTREMELY well at Universal Orlando! Characters seemed to be EVERYWHERE, more so than usual, and it lessened the need to crowd around any one character experience. Read more about what character interactions will look like when the parks reopen here! Please don’t skimp on the sanitization! When a guest sees frequent sanitization of surfaces, they are more likely to feel safe and know that Disney has their health in mind first and foremost. This includes frequent cleaning of rides, counters at retail locations, dining locations, and any other touchpoints that a guest may come into contact with. Cast Member cleaning at Disney Springs Physical distancing is one step towards mitigating any risk, but frequently sanitizing surfaces will put everyone’s minds at ease that every precaution is being taken! So it’s super important when the parks reopen for guests to SEE the sanitization happening in front of their very eyes! Cast Member with required face mask Disney will have ample opportunity for guests to wash and sanitize their hands. Disney has always been known for keeping its parks super clean and tidy, and from what we’ve already seen in Disney Springs, we expect sanitizer and handwashing stations to be plentiful. Read more about the possibilities for the sanitizing of transportation here! Please don’t have too few social distancing floor markers! What we’ve observed over the past few weeks is that when places run out of physical distancing floor markers, it creates a “free for all” environment. Physical distancing floor markers at Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey And with the likelihood that crowds will naturally form in some places in the parks (like what we saw at Hogsmeade in Universal), those floor markers will be super important to help encourage distancing! Universal Studios While it’s impossible to mark every square inch of a theme park (could you imagine what that would look like?), having as many floor markers as possible goes a long way in helping folks know where to stand, and more importantly, where NOT to stand! We’ve seen all sorts of physical distancing stickers around Disney Springs! Check out how we decoded them here. We’re learning more every day about what Disney is planning on implementing in their theme parks to keep guests and Cast Members safe. While we can only hope Disney is taking every extra precaution to mitigate risk, we still know that at the end of the day that this is all new, and all locations are learning as they go! So, yes, we can also expect this to be a learning experience for Disney as well as for guests as the theme parks reopen, so expect things to change and be modified even after the parks reopen! Are you planning on visiting Disney World or Disneyland shortly after they reopen? Let us know in the comments! Although Disneyland has postponed its re-opening, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t still pixie dust to be sprinkled over the parks! Sleeping Beauty Castle While Downtown Disney still plans to open again on July 9th, over at Disneyland Resort, construction has resumed on a few projects! The Disney Resorts have started to re-open around the Disney World property, and we’ve been taking you with us to check them all out. Grand Floridian Resort While we’ve already given you a look at dining at the Grand Floridian Cafe, today we noticed some new construction at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort! Our friend @brbgoingtodisney spotted a construction fence going up through the middle of the resort today. Grand Floridian Fence As construction on Cinderella Castle also progresses (in all of its pinkness), construction workers are building the new Grand Floridian Walkway. However, the fence that we saw today is located through the middle of the resort. Grand Floridian Fence With the NBA teams set to arrive next month in Disney World, we know that some of the teams will be staying at the Grand Floridian. If the teams are staying during the same time as other guests, the fence could act as a potential temporary measure to distance the NBA players and officials from other guests until the NBA’s season finishes in Disney World. Although Disney Springs has reopened with comprehensive health and safety regulations, situations in the shopping and dining district are constantly changing and evolving. Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar Closed Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar, Dockside Margaritas, and Rustic Cuff have all suddenly closed this week. And another Disney Springs store has unexpectedly shut its doors to guests this weekend as well. Since guidelines are changing in Florida regularly, restaurants and stores may need to shift their hours of operation, health standards, and other regulations to comply with new policies. For example, multiple bars have had to close around Disney Springs due to Florida’s new alcohol ban. Blood Orange Margarita As of this weekend, UNIQLO has closed temporarily and the retail location has released little information regarding the reason behind the sudden closure. UNIQLO The UNIQLO website does not list store hours for the upcoming days. We were unable to reach UNIQLO by phone for more information at this time. ©UNIQLO We aren’t sure when the store will reopen again, but we will keep an eye on any further developments and pass along more information as it becomes available! The Monorail is Out and About! ©mockonerunning When the Monorail isn’t out for testing, it’s been parked at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. The Monorail Parked at Disney’s Contemporary Resort And that’s where we noticed an interesting addition — social distancing barriers have been added inside the Monorail! Take a look at the middle of the window below!
