Last week, Disney participated in a virtual conference and gave some insight about the future of the Disney resorts, cruise line, Disney+, and more. Walt Disney World Resort entrance Check out what one Disney executive had to say about what Disney Parks projects will be moving forward with construction in the parks. On September 10th, Christine McCarthy — Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of The Walt Disney Company — participated in a question-and-answer session at the Bank of America Virtual 2020 Media, Communications, & Entertainment Conference. ©The Walt Disney Company When discussing the future of Disney’s theme parks, McCarthy noted that Disney is investing in and will continue to invest in its theme parks. Magic Kingdom Before the park closures, Disney had announced and started on quite a few new construction projects for attractions and experiences at many of its theme parks. But, what construction projects will still be moving forward at this time? Space 220 McCarthy spoke a bit about that during the conference. She said that while Disney will continue to invest in the parks, the investments will be prioritized to continue certain projects that were already “in flight.” McCarthy specifically noted that the following projects are among the ones being prioritized: 1 — Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser This immersive Star Wars experience is currently being built in Disney World. As part of this experience, guests will live out their own Star Wars story during a 2-day, 2-night stay aboard the “intergalactic cruise ship” called the Halcyon. Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Concept Art We’ve been keeping an eye on the construction of this area for a while now. Currently, the Disney World website notes that guests will be able to go on this special adventure in 2021. Screenshot from the Disney World Website Reservations were also scheduled to become available later this year. As this is a project that is being prioritized, we expect to continue to see construction moving forward and more news to be released as 2021 approaches. 2 — Avengers Campus During the conference, McCarthy specifically noted that the completion of the Avengers Campus in Disneyland’s Disney California Adventure is one of the projects being prioritized. ©Disney Prior to the park closures, Avengers Campus was slated to open in Disney California Adventure on July 18th, 2020. The website has since been updated to simply state that the new area is “coming soon,” so we aren’t sure when the new opening date will be, but we have seen some progress made in the area. Disneyland website screenshot We’ve seen various casting calls sent out recently for stunt performers, which could mean that this area is one step closer to being ready to open.We also shared recently that the Quinjet has already landed in Avengers Campus. ©Josh D’Amaro So, even though we still don’t have an opening date for Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure, it definitely looks like things have been moving forward with this project. 3 — Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway in Disneyland Finally, McCarthy noted that the construction of the West Coast Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway over in Disneyland’s ToonTown was also among the list of projects being prioritized. Welcome to Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway! The attraction opened in Walt Disney World at Disney’s Hollywood Studios earlier this year, and we’ve been able to experience it lots of times and check out all of the cute merchandise themed to this new ride! MMRR Minnie Ears When the attraction was officially announced at the D23 Expo in 2019, the target opening date for Disneyland’s version of this ride was 2022. ©waltdisneyimagineering Instagram Even though we’ve seen construction progressing, the opening date has been delayed to 2023. Other parks projects, like Space 220, EPCOT’s Play! Pavilion, and the TRON attraction, were not specifically listed by McCarthy as being on the priority list. But, we’ve seen construction progressing by some of these spots. We’ve also seen construction moving forward for other projects like Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, both of which are in EPCOT. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind Construction We’re excited to see all of these projects one they’re finalized, and we’re interested to see what new projects Disney announces in the future. We’ll definitely be on the lookout for more updates and let you know what we find! Click here to read about 4 Disney World construction projects you may have totally forgotten were underway! Disney+ has been a big piece of Disney’s business over the past year, especially with the global health crisis shutting down other divisions. Disney+ Bus With a library full of iconic Disney flicks and original content available now and on the horizon, it’s no wonder that Disney+ has seen significant success since its initial launch last year. With things going so well for the streaming service, could we see a price increase in the future? Let’s take a look. During the 2020 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference, Bank of America Securities Managing Director Jessica Reif Ehrlich sat down with Walt Disney Company Senior Executive Vice President & CFO Christine McCarthy to talk about the Disney Company’s current situation and plans for the future. Photo by Jesse Grant/Getty Images for Disney On the subject of Disney+, Ehrlich posed the question, “When does it make sense to raise prices?” To this, McCarthy noted that prices will likely go up in the future. “It’s clear that we priced Disney+ at a very accessible price point initially,” she noted. Though unrelated to the overall price of the service, Disney has already implemented a premium access pricing model for the release of Mulan on Disney+ for an additional price point. This is a change, McCarthy explains, that came as a direct adjustment in response to business disruptions from the crisis. ©Disney The price increase will come as the volume of content increases on the service. McCarthy noted that there would be more original content now had the global health crisis not gotten in the way. She noted that several projects were set to be put into production that have now been slowed because of COVID-19. Still, Disney+ will continue to have a focus on original content going forward. McCarthy explained that “When more content is on the service, we’ll have some pricing power.” From there, the company may adjust pricing, although it won’t necessarily be adjusted equally across all of the markets — especially those outside of the US. ©Disney Hmm, how interesting! It certainly seems like a price increase is in the future for Disney+, although it may be some time before we see it. According to McCarthy, it all depends on the content that’s offered. There’s no doubt about it, travel has been difficult over the past few months. Orlando International Airport The global health crisis had a major effect on how safe it is to travel, especially internationally. With limitations on flights, countries imposing travel bans, and more; travel has been a challenge for some time. Now, the US is lifting some international travel restrictions — here’s what it could mean for your Disney trip. According to an announcement from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), international travelers will no longer be required to undergo enhanced health screening and will no longer be routed through designated US airports. Previously, those traveling from or through China, Iran, the European Schengen Zone, the UK, Ireland, and Brazil were subject to these restrictions. These changes are in effect now. Mickey Mouse According to Travel and Leisure, the restrictions are being lifted due to the extremely small number of passengers who have had a health issue. Per the article, “Of the 675,000 passengers screened at the 15 airports, less than 15 were confirmed to have COVID-19.” Orlando International Airport Instead, US Government funding will be routed to “more effective mitigation efforts that focus on the individual passenger” such as health education, robust illness response, voluntary information collection, potential testing, and more. Masks are required in Disney World If you’re traveling from one of the above mentioned, previously restricted areas, you may have an easier time planning a trip to the US Disney parks. Make sure to check with your country’s own restrictions to ensure that the trip home will be uninterrupted too. For local US Disney guests, we may start to see some international travelers return to the parks. This month finally marked the release of the newest Disney live-action remake. ©Disney Mulan made history by skipping U.S. theaters and heading straight to Disney+ in a premium access model amidst the global health crisis. Now, the film has made its way to a theatrical release in China — and has done well despite a few obstacles. According to the Wall Street Journal, this weekend, Disney’s Mulan reached the top of China’s box office, the world’s second-largest movie market. The film grossed $23.2 million, despite health concerns for theaters and some controversy surrounding the film. ©Disney The revenues this weekend are encouraging for the Walt Disney Company considering this is the first major movie from Walt Disney Studios to hit the market in the aftermath of the global health crisis. Plus, the film cost over $200 million, and the goal was to help the company win over Chinese markets. ©Disney The first week of Mulan‘s U.S. release came with some controversy, which made the Chinese box office all the more important. There were calls to boycott the film due to political comments made by Mulan actress Liu Yifei and the involvement of Chinese authorities in the controversial Xinjiang region, where part of the film was shot. @Walt Disney Studios The coming weeks at the box office in China will prove telling for whether Disney achieved its goal of pleasing Chinese moviegoers and whether the company’s studios successfully weathered the global health crisis in China. Get ready for a trip to the RAINFOREST! Rainforest Cafe Guests will find TWO Rainforest Cafe locations in Disney World — one in the Marketplace area of Disney Springs, and another right at the entrance to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. We headed out to the Rainforest Cafe in Animal Kingdom to see if the food holds up as well as the theming does! Atmosphere Rainforest Cafe is located at Animal Kingdom, but the main entrance to the restaurant is actually OUTSIDE of the park gates — which is important to note, especially if you’re running late for a reservation! You can enter the restaurant from either outside the park entrance or from another entrance just through the front gates of the park. Rainforest Cafe Entrance When we approached the check-in area, we saw that there are social distancing markers, as is common at restaurants and shops around Disney World property since the reopening. Check-In Area There was also hand sanitizer available at the elephant-shaped check-in desk. Hand Sanitizer at the Check-In Desk It’s good to note that Rainforest Cafe is NOT owned or operated by Disney. In fact, the same company — Landry’s Restaurants — that runs Rainforest also operates a few other locations around Disney World like T-Rex in Disney Springs and Yak and Yeti Restaurant in Animal Kingdom. (If you’re a Landry’s Select Club Member, points and perks apply at Disney World locations.) The name of this restaurant says it all — it’s HEAVILY themed to look like a rainforest, complete with dark lighting, animal animatronics, and plenty of (fake) plants and greenery! The Rainforest Cafe Theming is Intense There’s definitely plenty of interesting decor to look at around the restaurant, which can be great for keeping the kiddos entertained! Check Out ALLLLL That Theming! There’s even a giant aquarium in the dining room! If you can peel your eyes away from the larger-than-life frog on the wall, you’ll also see that some tables have signs indicating they’re unavailable to allow for space between parties. Rainforest Cafe Aquarium There’s also a bar located in the front part of the seating area. And even here, the theming is on point — check out those bar stools! Bar at Rainforest Cafe Note that the atmosphere here can get kind of LOUD when the animals begin their noises and calls. There are also periodic thunderstorms. If you have kiddos who are afraid of storms or loud noises, prepare in advance. Alright, now let’s get to what we’re here for — the FOOD! Eats We received a disposable paper menu with the food listed on one side… Rainforest Cafe Menu …and drinks on the other! Rainforest Cafe Menu A note on those souvenir cups served here — they can creep up on you without even realizing you really ordered one! You CAN get all the drinks served in a standard glass for cheaper, but you have to specifically ask when ordering. Even certain kids’ drinks come served in pricey souvenir cups, so go in with a plan if you want to avoid walking out with a bag full of pricey glasses. We ordered the Green Python to start off! This drink is made with Skyy Infusions Citrus Vodka, Midori Melon Liqueur, Don Q Coconut Rum, 99 Bananas Liqueur, sweet & sour, and pineapple juice. It comes served in a souvenir glass for $15.50 but we asked for ours served in a standard cup and were charged just $9. Green Python The cocktail was a bit too sweet for our taste, BUT it was definitely pretty boozy…and sizable! The sour flavors did help to balance out the sweetness somewhat, but we probably wouldn’t order this again on our next visit. If you’re looking for a sweet cocktail that still packs a punch this drink might be right up your alley! We’re always down for some fried cheese, so we decided to try the Cheese Sticks appetizer for $11.99. Cheese Sticks This was a pretty middle-of-the-road way to start our meal — the Cheese Sticks were okay, but definitely nothing groundbreaking! This is a good intro to what Rainforest Cafe food is often like: pretty basic, obviously frozen-and-reheated items that you’d find in a chain restaurant (because…yeah…this is a chain restaurant). These tasted a bit like the mozzarella sticks that are available in the frozen food section of the grocery store. Given the relatively “basic” flavor, we probably wouldn’t order these again — especially for the price! But if you have a picky eater, this might be something they would enjoy! Here’s a Look Inside One of the Cheese Sticks For our entree, we ordered the Blue Mountain Chicken Sandwich, which comes with lemon grilled chicken, bacon, Swiss cheese, roasted red peppers, lettuce, and zesty Safari sauce. It also comes with a choice of one side — we opted for the fries! Now — record scratch! — there was a lot to love about this sandwich! The bread was excellent, and the lemon flavor was more pronounced than we were expecting, but definitely in a good way — we loved it! Blue Mountain Chicken Sandwich There weren’t a ton of toppings on the sandwich, but that didn’t bother us too much since all of the flavors worked really well together regardless. Blue Mountain Chicken Sandwich So, would we get the sandwich on another trip back to Rainforest Cafe? Yes, we would definitely order it again! It was delicious, filling, and at $19.99, we think it was a fair price — by Disney standards, of course. (Outside of Disney? No way.) Our Spread at Rainforest Cafe So, we were one for three on what we ordered at Rainforest Cafe…and that’s pretty par for the course here, honestly. Nosh or Not? Rainforest Cafe might be right for you if: Your kiddos (or you!) really love the fun rainforest theming. You’re looking for a restaurant with a wide variety of menu options — you’ll find seafood, pasta, beef, pork, chicken, soup, salad, sandwiches…you name it! You have picky eaters in your party and need some more “basic” menu options. You’re making last-minute plans and need to find a restaurant with reservations available — it’s generally fairly easy to snag a reservation at Rainforest Cafe! You may want to skip Rainforest Cafe if: You’re not a fan of over-the-top theming in restaurants — it can get pretty dark and loud inside! You want to try a more unique meal you can’t have anywhere else. This is a chain restaurant after all. You’re looking for a meal that’s super inventive or complex — the Rainforest Cafe menu tends to be pretty “family-friendly!” Overall As always, the theming in Rainforest Cafe was pretty fun and we could definitely see the kiddos going WILD over it! While we’ve dined here a number of times, we’ve never been blown away by the food…though we ARE blown away by the high prices. You can find equal or better food at most chains near your home. And you can find a LOT better food for a lot less money elsewhere in Disney World. While we wouldn’t order the appetizer again, we’ll give credit where credit is due and say that we DID really enjoy the chicken sandwich. And while the drink wasn’t for us, but it could definitely be a good fit for guests who prefer a sweeter cocktail. So, even though Rainforest Cafe generally isn’t our first choice of restaurant in Animal Kingdom, we still had a pretty good experience. And we think some guests could have an AWESOME time here if the theming and menu really speaks to them! Here are the restaurants you should SKIP on your next Disney World vacation — and WHY! With the release of the new Disney Editions book, “The Disney Monorail: Imagineering a Highway in the Sky,” Disneyland Resort Ambassador Justin Rapp recently had the chance to talk with two of the book’s creators, Jeff Kurtti and Paul Wolski. In the interview captured below, they gave Justin an insider’s view of the content and the context of the book, and offered a behind-the-scenes look at how it came about. JUSTIN: I’ll start with the first step of the creative journey— How did you approach this subject as you started this project? JEFF: The challenge, as it typically is with Disney titles, is to create a story with sufficient depth and authority or new ideas or materials to appeal to a Disney fan, but also to not leave a reader who is fresh to Disney intimidated or feeling baffled. In the books I’ve done, that’s the balance for—and a reflection of—the breadth of the Disney audience. I’m not terribly interested in statistics and data as much as I am in telling a story. JUSTIN: That brings up an interesting point, I think. Why is the monorail so associated with Disney? PAUL: In a way, the Monorail symbolizes Walt’s spirit of exploration, discovery and possibility—and Disney fans connect to those feelings. Disney has always treated the Monorail as a transportation and an attraction, and the story is always futuristic, optimistic—that very “Walt” idea of “progress.” A sleek and silent train of the future that you can ride today… JUSTIN: We’ve had a Monorail operating at Disneyland for over 50 years. What was your first knowledge or experience of a Monorail growing up? PAUL: Growing up in Florida, I knew of only “one Monorail,” and was not really aware of the evolution of the tech or of Walt’s deep commitment to it. I also knew superficially that many versions had evolved over the years, but in the book we feature a fun visual spread showing all seven “Mark” series Monorails, and include their years of operation, color schemes and notable physical features. It’s great to view and compare them in one layout. JUSTIN: What was the origin of your story? Was this an idea that you and your co-authors brought to the table, or something else? JEFF: We work a lot with a wonderful editor named Jennifer Eastwood, and she called one day with that “headline concept” for a book: “The Disney Monorail.” Like so many of us who are fans at heart, she remembered her childhood family vacations to Walt Disney World, and was lucky to have stayed at Disney’s Contemporary Resort almost every summer. So in Jen’s fond recollections, the Disney Monorail has a deep resonance and meaning. I think she knew a lot of other Disney fans feel that way too! I couldn’t imagine a book that I knew would be so reliant on the collections at Walt Disney Imagineering without Vanessa Hunt as a collaborator, so I pitched that she co-author with me. Vanessa is not just deeply familiar with the Walt Disney Imagineering Art Collection; she has an aficionado’s understanding of the cultural meaning in the works—she’s a big enough fan to know what will be of the most interest. Her personal talents and art and collections experience combine for not just a skill with using the visuals to support and to advance storytelling, it’s given her a deep conscience about protecting the artists and artistic intent, and really protecting the quality of image reproduction. Looking at how the visuals were assembling, I asked Paul to join us, and sort of “bring it all together,” which, of course, elevated the whole thing.PAUL: I’ve known Jeff for thirty years, and we’ve been good friends and colleagues, so our views are very simpatico. I was just so inspired by the story and the artwork of Disney’s monorails, and that notion of an “optimistic future,” I thought it would be so rewarding to bring together all the storytelling into a unified visual statement. Working with the vast number of images that Vanessa “curated” like an exhibit designer was a huge benefit to the overall “look” of things. JUSTIN: No doubt one of the reasons the book is so visually stunning. It seems like every page is a kind of “reveal.” It did make me curious how you work as a trio to balance the storytelling. JEFF: Unlike a lot of books, we all started out together. It wasn’t a procedural process where I wrote, then Vanessa picked art, then Paul did a design. We all worked in parallel to manage the storytelling in all forms, and create something where everything was harmonious. PAUL: It also gave us three viewpoints, too, I think. We have a different experience and viewpoint on the subject. I’m a Florida kid, and Jeff was an Anaheim guy. Vanessa has her own point of view—generational and professional—on the subject. In that way, the book begins to express itself, the work began to show, and tell us what it wanted to be, to best tell a compelling story. I think that the three of us temper and balance one another, and it enables us to create something with broader narrative and appeal. JUSTIN: The art is truly varied and interesting, from early concepts to seemingly common things like signage and graphics. PAUL: Vanessa assembled a gallery of WDI art pieces and photographs—many I had not seen before, and I’m sure have never been published. Several of them have been published, of course—but much of what we have seen before is from lower-quality sources such as photographic transparencies, some of them dating back to the 1980s. Vanessa insisted that all the art be from primary sources. So the art within this book even if we think we’ve seen it before, has rich resolution, focal clarity, and color accuracy that makes it new. JEFF: I also had never really noticed how many early Disneyland design iterations, dozens of visions of various “Tomorrowlands,” feature a monorail as an expectation, as an expression of futurism. It’s there from the earliest notions of the Park. PAUL: There’s something timeless about the Mark I design, as well as earlier depictions of futuristic travel that featured rounded curves and orbs. Now it’s a kind of retro style that has become an aesthetic that represents modern design JUSTIN: That “Tomorrowland” vibe extends to the overall book design. I sensed inspiration from attraction posters, for instance… PAUL: Regarding the attraction posters, the design of those graphics led me to really study the bold and clean graphic styling of the great Disney art director Paul Hartley. It resulted in a book that at once feels vintage and current. Vanessa gave me a ton of reference—the WDI Collection houses scores of Hartley’s works for Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair. Posters, signage, tram cards and print collateral graphics were his forte. He was so prolific. His work in magazine and book design was the key resource for me. I looked through issues of “Mickey Mouse Club Magazine” and its successor, “Walt Disney’s Magazine,” published from 1955-1959, and the books Hartley art directed. JUSTIN: Can you tell me something in the book that you’re particularly excited about? PAUL: An idea that came about at the very last minute had to do with this really glorious huge 76″ x 32″ EPCOT concept rendering, created in 1975 by award- winning production designer John DeCuir, Sr. The dynamic width of the piece made it really hard to present without cropping it. It broke my heart to have to lose it. Then our editor suggested putting it at full-width on the inside of the dust jacket, as an “easter egg” for readers. JUSTIN: That’s terrific. Thank you for sharing some insight on how these great Disney Editions books come about. I’m always fascinated to know how Disney projects are made—that “backstage” view is a big part of Disney culture! “The Disney Monorail: Imagineering a Highway in the Sky” is on sale September 15.
