There’s No Such Thing as a Slow Season in Disney World Anymore, and THIS Might Be WHY

Have you noticed how busy Disney World has been lately?

Crowds

It feels like wait times have consistently been long for our favorite rides and there is hardly an empty space to be found in the parks lately. That’s got us craving those slower seasons at Disney World and putting on our sleuthing hats to figure out where they’ve gone. Well, we think we’ve come across one factor that might be affecting the crowd level, so let’s talk about it!

As we were saying, those days of planning your Disney World trip around the “slow seasons” to avoid those crowds and long lines might be a thing of the past. We’ve seen wait times consistently high, regardless of the time of year. So, what’s changed?

Disney does a lot to try to attract crowds to the park during slower seasons. The best discounts on hotel rooms and perks like free dining are offered during off-peak times. You usually won’t see them in the summer or during holiday weeks. And events — like runDisney race weekends — are timed to be on the calendar during slower periods, as well. But even considering those factors, you used to be able to “count on” crowds being lower in certain parts of the year — like late January, early May in between spring breaks and the end of the school year, and the first couple of weeks of December. Now, even those weeks are a wild card for crowd predictions.

One reason for this shift could be a consequence of the pandemic. Now, wait. Hear this out. (We’re not just blaming everything on the pandemic.) According to a recent article from the New York Times, schools are experiencing a huge rise in chronic school absences from their students across the board.

There are a whole host of reasons and factors that go into why the students are more chronically absent this past year than before the pandemic, and one of those is that families are now more likely to take their children on vacation throughout the year, outside of the traditional summer break.

The crowds are here

This trend could be due to factors like parents experiencing more flexibility with their remote work schedules, a desire to make up for those lost vacation time during the pandemic, or that they’ve found more affordable travel deals during non-peak seasons.

In addition, during the pandemic many students attended school remotely from their homes, and schools relaxed their policies on attendance. As Psychologist Katie Rosanbalm told the Times, “Our relationship with school became optional.”

CROWD alert!

Whatever the exact reasoning may be, it’s translating to shrinking “slow” seasons at Disney World. As we said, those typical on-and-off seasons may be just a thing of the past.

We’re at Disney World every day watching the crowd levels, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated with all the latest Disney news, so keep it right here so you don’t miss a thing!
