There are a few rides that we’re pretty excited are coming to Disney World.

TRON: Lightcycle Power Run is Coming to Disney World

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure debuted in EPCOT on October 1st, and we’re looking forward to Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind in EPCOT and TRON Lightcycle Run in Magic Kingdom. The TRON coaster has been pretty high-profile construction in the park — it’s hard to miss when you look at Tomorrowland! So what’s the deal with this highly-anticipated but rarely discussed coaster?

What is TRON Lightcycle Run?

Well, first what is TRON Lightcycle Run? This upcoming rollercoaster is an indoor/outdoor hybrid coaster coming to Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom. It’s based on the TRON movies and has a very futuristic vibe.

Disney has shared that the attraction will allow riders to “experience the energy, lights, and excitement of TRON’s high-tech universe” in a “thrilling race through the digital frontier.” It’s another iteration of a ride that already exists at Shanghai Disney Resort.

The ride vehicles will be a train of two-wheeled Lightcycles that you’ll sit on like a motorcycle — similar to the way the ride vehicles on Flight of Passage work. The coaster will reach speeds of up to 59 miles per hour and the ride experience will change from day to night depending on the lighting (it will light up REALLY cool once it gets dark!).

When will it open?

Here’s the big question: WHEN will TRON Lightcycle Run open? The attraction was originally slated to open in time for the 50th Anniversary of Walt Disney World on October 1st. That came and went and TRON is still very much under construction. Now though, the opening remains unknown.

Construction of TRON: Lightcycle Run

With the closure of the Disney World parks for several months and the construction halt that came as a result of the global health crisis, TRON Lightcycle Run was likely met with delays and may not open in 2021. Disney has yet to announce an updated timeline.

What’s the latest with construction?

We may not know an opening timeline but we CAN check in on the latest with construction! We’ve been keeping a close eye on the progress of this attraction which can be seen from several areas of Magic Kingdom and neighboring hotels — most clearly perhaps from the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover.

Look closely…

Thus far, the outer shell of the ride building has been constructed, though we’re not sure about progress on the inside. The MOST visible project is the outdoor canopy. This MASSIVE lighted canopy surrounds the outdoor portion of the ride track and will create a VERY unique ride lighting effect on the coaster.

We’ve noticed the recent removal of construction supports from the framing of the canopy and the start of blue wrappings being added to the structure.

It doesn’t outwardly appear that there’s TOO too much left to do on TRON, but looks can be deceiving. Now we just await an opening announcement from Disney! We’ll be keeping a VERY close eye on construction and be looking for more news about TRON Lightcycle Run, so be sure to stay tuned to DFB for all the latest updates!
