Disney4me Posted Thursday at 05:00 PM Report Posted Thursday at 05:00 PM Disneyland Resort recently welcomed 101-year-old Congressional Medal of Honor recipient and retired U.S. Navy Capt. E. Royce Williams to The Happiest Place on Earth, honoring his remarkable courage and service as part of Disney’s enduring respect for U.S. service members, veterans, and their families. Williams is the oldest living Medal of Honor recipient from the Korean War. History Written in the Skies Capt. Williams joined the U.S. Navy as a naval aviator in 1943, serving in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. On Nov. 18, 1952, during the Korean War, he was flying from the USS Oriskany when seven Soviet MiG-15 fighter jets appeared, leading to what became the longest dogfight in U.S. military history—a mission that remained classified for more than 50 years. Over his career, he flew more than 220 combat missions and received the Medal of Honor, Silver Star and Navy Cross for his valor, devotion to duty and extraordinary service in the skies. Honoring a Living Legend at Disneyland Resort Disneyland Resort cast members welcomed Captain Williams, his close friends, and fellow retired military aviators for a day of Disney magic. Together, they visited Sleeping Beauty Castle where he was named an Honorary Citizen of Disneyland—a rare and distinguished honor by Disneyland Ambassador Michele Mary in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland park. Being named an official Citizen of Disneyland was especially meaningful for Captain Williams and he shared that Walt Disney was his hero during World War II for the efforts put forth in his animation and artwork supporting the troops. As the warm late-afternoon light filled Town Square on Main Street, U.S.A., guests gathered around the flagpole for a special Flag Retreat ceremony honoring Royce. A beloved Disneyland tradition since the park’s earliest days, the daily ceremony is a meaningful tribute to service, sacrifice, and patriotism. On this day, that tradition carried even greater significance as Disney cast members, the Disneyland Band, and the Dapper Dans helped recognize Royce’s extraordinary legacy and lifetime of service to our nation. Through music, ceremony, and heartfelt appreciation, Disneyland paid tribute to an American hero whose courage, devotion, and sacrifice continue to inspire generations. “This year has been very special for Royce; he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in February, and today Disney is honoring him during the Flag Retreat Ceremony,” said fellow retired U.S. Navy Capt. Paul Tanaka, a friend of Royce Williams. “Disney has shown their profound respect and commitment towards honoring service members, and I’m grateful they have chosen to honor Royce today. I know this is a special moment he will forever cherish.” After the Flag Retreat, Royce was treated to a flight on Soarin’ Across America at Disney California Adventure park. Since the original attraction debuted in 2001, its queue has paid tribute to California and the Golden State’s rich aviation history. For Royce, the experience offered a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the legacy of American aviation while enjoying a touch of Disney magic. Disney’s Profound Commitment of Honoring U.S. Military Service The Walt Disney Company’s tradition of honoring military service dates back more than a century, beginning with founders Walt and Roy O. Disney’s service to country during World War I. Today, that commitment continues through daily Flag Retreat ceremonies at Disneyland, special ticket offers for service members, and eligible veterans, and more. Throughout 2026, Disneyland Resort has offered specially priced promotional theme park tickets for active and retired U.S. Military members and their spouses. Offers are valid through a U.S. Military base ticket office, and eligible service members/veterans can purchase via GOVX.com with a valid Military ID.
