Autopia in Disneyland

Autopia is an opening day Disneyland attraction, so it’s been making guests happy since 1955. Back in April 2024, Disney announced that changes would be coming to the engines on the cars in the attraction, and while that plan in still in motion, it’s recently been revealed that a change to the engines made prior to 2024 violated rules set by the California Air Resources Board, and now, Disney has paid a hefty fine voluntarily.

The Orange County Register has reported that back in August 2024, Disney paid the California Air Resources Board a $56,250 settlement to resolve violations regarding the Autopia cars without admitting liability. The settlement came after Disney disclosed that the Honda engines on Autopia ride vehicles were operating without certified emission controls in September 2023. Disneyland officials have confirmed that the fine was the result of an administrative oversight that was corrected promptly with no impact on the environment.

What is the California Air Resources Board, you ask? Well, they’re responsible for protecting the public from the harmful effects of air pollution. While it was originally planned that the Autopia cars would become electric by fall 2026, that timeline has now been pushed back. However, Disneyland officials have confirmed that they’ve reached an agreement with the California Air Resources Board to retire the current Autopia gas-powered engines in early 2027, which is only a few months after the original plan’s timeline.

Disneyland Resort has made a sustainability commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2030, and this change to electric power is part of that plan. Disneyland officials also stated that they are seriously committed to meeting or exceeding all applicable air quality requirements, hence their volunteering to pay the settlement and making the switch to electric.

Many Disney fans are also hoping a similar change will come to Tomorrowland Speedway in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, but so far, no news about a change has been announced.
