“Please Stand Clear of the Doors.” Yes, I Did Program My Car To Play Disney World Sounds — Here’s How It’s Done

We are always looking for ways to bring more Disney into our homes and regular lives when we can’t be in the parks.

Bring Disney to your car!

That’s why we absolutely have a mouse ears display rack sitting in our living rooms to show off our massive ear collection. We also have a park wait time sign sitting on our desk so we can pretend we’re just waiting for a ride in Disney World. And, yes, we’re watching Happily Ever After videos EVERY NIGHT before we go to bed to add a little extra magic to our day. However, we just found a NEW way to put a little more Disney in our lifes…by adding Disney ride dialogue to our cars — and we’re going to tell you how to do it.

So we got this idea after seeing some social media videos of folks who were using Apple CarPlay to make their car play Disney sounds when it starts up. For example, take a look at this video where the car starts up and the driver gets the whole spiel from the beginning of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Seriously…how fun is this?

Well, now you can do that, too (and we’re already planning to use the Doom Buggy dialogue from Haunted Mansion for our own cars because HOW FUN). We’re going to give you a step-by-step guide (thanks to Motor1) on how to set up Apple CarPlay to play Disney sounds when you start your vehicle. Here’s how:

1. Make sure your car has Apple CarPlay compatibility, and be sure to have an iPhone or other iOS device that you use when in your vehicle.
2. Choose your custom start-up sound (the most common file formats for these files are MP4 or Mp3). You can either search for specific sounds or find tools that allow you to download tracks from YouTube or Spotify. You can also use tools to edit sound files.
3. Once you have your sound ready, go to the Photos app on iPhone and trim it down to what you want, if necessary.
4. Find a video-to-audio converter tool and upload that clipped track. Once that file has processed into either an MP3 or MP4, download it to your files app.
5. Go to the Shortcuts application on iPhone. Hit automation > then the + sign on the top right. Hit “CarPlay.” This allows you to play this sound when Apple CarPlay connects. Make sure the “Connects” function is switched to “On.” Also, make sure the “Run Immediately” option is on, as well as the “Notify me when Ran.” If you choose “Run After Confirmation,” your phone will prompt you each time CarPlay starts the sound.
6. Hit “Next,” and choose “New Blank Automation.” Pick the file you saved and want to play when Apple CarPlay starts. Scroll down to the “Files” app and select your audio clip.
7. Once you’ve selected the file, you’ll see its URL under “When CarPlay connects.” Beneath the URL, tap the “Search Actions” bar and type in “Play sound.” This lays your sound whenever your car is started and your phone connects to your car.

Yes, it’s a lot of steps, but if you do it right, you’ll be able to bring a little Disney to every car trip you make, and isn’t that the BEST? You can also set a sound to play when CarPlay disconnects, which could be a fun way to add “Now I will raise the safety bar, and a ghost will follow you home!” right before you get out of your vehicle.
