Are you heading to Disney World or some other exciting destination soon? YAY! Southwest Plane If you are flying there, I thought I’d share a tip. You see, I used to be a flight attendant for a major airline…and I’ve seen some things, especially when it comes to luggage. So, I thought I’d share my tip for your carry on bags! So you probably know this but sometimes checked luggage gets lost…SHOCKER, right?! But that’s not all that could potentially happen to that checked luggage. For instance, it could also end up getting soaked. Amazon Carry-On Luggage I can’t tell you the number of times that the people who load and unload the luggage had to hustle inside due to lightning and the luggage was left out on the runway. These employees have to leave the runway for safety reasons and sadly end up having to leave your luggage to the elements for a bit. So if you don’t have hard-sided luggage, everything you brought with you will end up wet in this situation. Sanford Airport This is why I recommend bringing a spare pair of clothes, a set of PJs, and undergarments in your carry-on. Then if your luggage is lost or if everything you own looks like it has taken a dip in the pool, you will still have something to get you through the following day. I also personally like to bring my tooth brush and any other items like medication in my carry-on just in case! When in comes to carry-on bags, most airlines have similar guidelines for what sizes they allow onboard. But I personally like to bring a bag that is guaranteed to fit under my seat. When that flight gets full and everyone is stuffing the overhead bins with luggage, jackets, purses, and who knows what else, you might end up being the person that is asked to check your carry-on luggage under the plane. It happens all the time! But if you are hoping to have those spare clothes and things with you for just in caseys, then I suggest bringing a carry-on that can fit under the seat in front of you. Southwest Cabin Then there is no need to check that bag and you should be a-OK to bring it and your necessities onboard even if all the overhead bins are full! This is just a piece of my personal experience and how I handle my carry-on when I travel now. Looking for more travel tips? Check out our links below. I Travel Full Time. Wait times have not been letting up at Disney World this week! Fight of Passage Lightning Lane However, it might not be in the way you’re thinking. This week, the average wait times have remained fairly…consistent. Still long, but a lot of wait times only had changed by a few minutes. Of course, we still have some that jumped up a good amount — like a handful of the major E-ticket attractions. We’re still feeling some impacts of those Spring Break and Easter crowds, so we’re not too surprised. Take a look at this week’s average wait times — going from highest to lowest! Magic Kingdom Wait Times We were hoping to see more decreases in wait times, but the Spring Break and Easter crowds have prevailed! Are you ready for the best Halloween Party to ever grace the West Coast? Well, we’re looking forward to this year’s Oogie Boogie Bash in Disney California Adventure and we are SO ready to get more details. Gotta pay a visit to the boogie man! Now, Disney did recently confirm that Oogie Boogie Bash would return this year (like we knew it would). That’s about all we know about this year’s event, but we’ve been to a few of these parties, so we can probably figure out what this year’s event could hold. 2024 Dates and Tickets This year’s Oogie Boogie Bash will be held from early August 23rd through October 31st. That’s a few weeks earlier than it started last year, but as it’s always so popular, we can imagine that tickets will still sell out for every night pretty quickly (typically, in less than 24 hours). 2023 Oogie Boogie Bash So when will tickets go on sale? In 2023, tickets went on sale in late June, starting with pre-sales for Magic Key Holders. Now, there were some issues with the whole ticket-buying process, but Disney has sort of streamlined that with other events this year. We expect tickets to go on sale this year in late June or early July. As far as ticket prices go, we expect them to be about the same (or maybe a little higher) as last year: from $134 to $189 per person. Disney Confirmed Oogie Boogie Bash Is Returning This Year — Here’s When Tickets Could Go on Sale Returning Entertainment and Activities We also expect specific activities to return this year, including the Interactive Trick or Treat Trails with Villains and Villains Grove. Now, we don’t know what villains we will expect to see this year, and Disney usually adds a few surprises when they announce it, so we’ll be looking forward to that. Villains Grove We also expect to see the return of the Frightfully Fun Parade, filled with that banger of a tune “It’s Halloween-lo-ween” song and even MORE of our favorite Disney villains. We also expect to see Mickey’s Trick and Treat Show return. Plus there will be a lot of unique party PhotoPass photo ops and Magic Shots available! FIRST LOOK at Disney’s Exclusive Oogie Boogie Bash Parade Characters It’s hard to say which characters will appear outside of the trick-or-treat trails this year, but last year we ran into Scarlet Witch, several Avengers characters, Hans, Bruno, and more. Although some of the characters have meet-and-greet spots, you might just find others wandering around California Adventure. Bruno at Disneyland We also expect to see Minnie, Daisy, and Clarabelle returning this year dressed as the Sanderson Sisters. This is one of the most popular meet and greets during the party! VIDEOS: See the TWO New Villains That Came To Disney’s Oogie Boogie Bash Exclusive Snacks and Merchandise The most exciting part of the Oogie Boogie Bash, though, is the few exclusive snacks you can get during the party. We tried a few of those last year — you can read our reviews here. Halloween Scoop You’ll also find party-exclusive merchandise, including special party merchandise for Magic Key Holders. Read our snack reviews from 2023 Of course, we’re still waiting for Disney to reveal more details about this year’s Oogie Boogie Bash, and we expect there might even be a few surprises in store for this year’s party. It’s official — a major Disney ride problem is finally being fixed. Disneyland’s Autopia Autopia opened with Disneyland on July 17, 1955, and the attraction has been putting kids behind the wheel — and creating some seriously stinky fumes in the process — ever since. That’s all about to change soon, though. And, now that Disneyland is finally fixing this annoying ride problem — can we expect Disney World to do the same? Disney is planning on replacing the pure gasoline engines that have powered Autopia’s cars since its inception with new electric or hybrid power sources. A spokesperson for the company said, “…we have developed a roadmap to electrify this attraction and are evaluating technology that will enable us to convert from gas engines in the next few years.” That is SO exciting — especially because if you’ve ever been anywhere near Autopia, you know just how STINKY the gas-powered cars can be. Autopia But, as of now, Disney hasn’t made any announcements about the potential for a similar change to happen at the Disney World version of the ride — Tomorrowland Speedway. It’s something that fans have been begging Disney to change, especially when we talk to our readers about which rides are in serious need of updating. Tomorrowland Speedway in Magic Kingdom is almost always at the top of the list. Tomorrowland Speedway And, while not quite as bothersome as the smell of the fumes, those cars are pretty darn loud as they putter around the race track (can someone please check the catalytic converters?!) It would only make sense for Disney to transition the Tomorrowland Speedway to some sort of electric or hybrid vehicle. Not only would it greatly improve an entire area of Tomorrowland in Magic Kingdom, but it would be in line with Disney’s recent efforts to be sustainable and environmentally friendly. Tomorrowland Speedway No timetable for the Autopia changeover has been given as of now, and even less is known about whether or not these changes will come to Disney World. As soon as Disney makes any sort of announcements, we’ll let you know! Stay tuned to DFB as we continue to bring you the latest news from Disney World and more! Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in Magic Kingdom — April 2024 The ride in Disney World is set to open this summer. Now, we are starting to see some big signs that we’re getting close. First, several of the walls that have been surrounding the construction have started to come down! No more walls! We have also seen Disney Imagineers test riding the ride! Now, that gets us super excited to see! If they’re riding it, that’s gotta mean it’s almost ready, right? Disney Imagineers riding Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in Disney World Other subtle details have emerged such as the water lily in the new gate. The water little is a nod to the movie the ride is inspired by. Ohh, so fancy! And now that some of the walls have come down, you can see new details like this new sidewalk that has been exposed! New sidewalk We recently learned lots of new information about this ride, including a hint that there will be Splash Mountain Easter Eggs throughout the attraction! Tomorrowland Terrace Tomorrowland Terrace is a quick-service restaurant that’s remained closed since the 2020 pandemic-related closures, but even before that, this spot was only occasionally open. Tomorrowland Terrace Once in a while, you’ll see the dining room open as a rest area (and it’s still being used for the Magic Kingdom Fireworks Dessert Parties), but it’s usually all roped off and empty. Everything We Know About the Bizzare New Attraction Coming to Magic Kingdom EPCOT Restaurant Marrakesh Restaurant Marrakesh is still closed in the Morocco pavilion of EPCOT’s World Showcase, and there’s no word yet on when it might reopen. Restaurant Marrakesh The restaurant is kind of open right now — it’s functioning as a lounge with just a couple of drink options. However, we’re still waiting for the full restaurant to reopen! The restaurant’s website looks normal, so we still don’t know if it is permanently closed or if it could reopen. Something New Landed in World Celebration Gardens EPCOT Disney’s Hollywood Studios Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster closed on January 8th, it won’t reopen until the summer of this year. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Although we don’t have an exact reopening date yet, we know that it’ll be at least a few months before the ride reopens. Last year, when the ride closed around this time (on February 20th, to be exact), it reopened on May 26th. Voyage of the Little Mermaid Well, it’s official — Voyage of the Little Mermaid is permanently closed in Disney World. We had suspected this was the case for some time (as it hasn’t actually been open for a few years now), but now the permanent closure has been confirmed. Voyage of the Little Mermaid Disney is going to introduce a NEW show in this spot, though it will still be themed to the animated movie The Little Mermaid! The new show will be called “The Little Mermaid — A Musical Adventure” and is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Fall 2024. ©Disney It will be a “fully reimagined theatrical production inspired by the Walt Disney Animation Studios classic.” Why You Won’t Want to Go to Disney’s Hollywood Studios on June 5th Blizzard Beach Blizzard Beach had its last open day on March 16th, 2024 before it closed for refurbishment. It’s hard to keep up with Disney World food because new food seems to arrive in restaurants every day. Steakhouse 71 However, we try to keep on top of ALL the new meals and snacks, so we can keep you updated on what you should eat when you’re visiting Disney World. We just finished a round of seasonal spring treats, but we recently spotted a new appetizer we needed to try at a Disney World hotel. Okay, we lied. We don’t need an excuse to visit Steakhouse 71 and the Steakhouse 71 Lounge at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. We’ll go there EVERY chance we get. But we recently decided to have a sit down inside the lounge and discovered that there are some brand new wings to try: Honey Chipotle Barbecue Wings for $14. Sweet and spicy, right? Okay, we’re in. Chipotle Honey Barbecue Wings These wings are nice and sticky with sweetness, but we gotta’ warn you, they are VERY spicy, so you get a kind of Nashville hot honey situation with them. That heat also lingers after each bite. Like, the first bite is like “ooh…sweet…” and then suddenly, you’re desperately searching for a glass of milk. Can you say SPICY? However, it was rinse and repeat, because we LOVED these wings, despite that heat. But if you are not a fan of spicy things, you probably won’t appreciate that heat like we do. So there’s your warning. Also, the wings are served with Celery and Carrots, just in case you want to make sure you get your veggies. Plus you get your veggies With DOZENS of places to eat at Disney World, we know it can be tough to plan your meals. That’s why we wrote the DFB Guide to Dining at Walt Disney World. We love Disney’s Animal Kingdom because it’s not like any other theme park we’ve ever been to. Kilimanjaro Safaris You’ve got immersive lands like Pandora from the Avatar movies, a ride up to visit a Yeti on Mount Everest, and a whole land dedicated to dinosaurs (although that’s going to change soon). However, we think Kilimanjaro Safaris is one of our favorite rides in Animal Kingdom because it’s about as close to going on a REAL African safari as you can get. However, there are some rules you need to follow when you ride it including one VERY important rule. Now, there are some rules you should be aware of even before you get on the safaris. For example, strollers are not allowed on the safari vehicles. Once you’re on the vehicle, though, a few other rules apply. First, you need to make sure you’re listening to any instructions given by the Cast Member driving the vehicle. Also, you’ll want to remain seated as you ride through the safari (and whatever you do, do NOT exit the vehicle unless a Cast Member explicitly tells you otherwise). Safari vehicles However, one rule you may not be aware of is that you should NEVER call out to any of the animals. Don’t call out their names, whistle at them, or make any kind of noises to get their attention. Not only could this confuse or stress these animals out, but they’re also trained to interact with and listen to their keepers (if you don’t believe they’re trained, we highly suggest watching Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom on Disney+ — you’d be amazed at how trained they are!). Giraffe during Kilimanjaro Safaris So please keep that in mind and explain it to your children, too, so they know! Stay tuned to DFB for more! We saw more Tiana’s Bayou Adventure animatronics! Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is set to open at Disney World this summer, and we got to visit the large shop where Imagineers are working on all of the animatronics for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Tiana in the Workshop We saw several different Tiana animatronics in the workshop, all from different ride scenes, and each with a slight variation in her outfit. Some have her hat on, some off, some have a jacket, etc. We also noticed that Tiana is wearing a wedding ring in at least one animatronic, which we thought was a lovely touch. So it looks like Tiana will be accompanying us on the entire journey during the ride! Of course there are also multiple animatronic versions of Louis! ©Disney We also saw Eudora, Ralphie, Lottie, Mama Odie, and JuJu! ©Disney We are absolutely over the moon and can’t wait for the ride to open this summer in Magic Kingdom. Click here to see what’s new in Magic Kingdom WE GOT A TOY STORY 5 RELEASE DATE! We had heard rumblings that Toy Story 5 would be happening, and eventually Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that the movie was set for 2026 and beyond, and would feature Tim Allen as the voice of Buzz Lightyear. But, now it’s official and the release date has been confirmed! ©Disney/Pixar It’s official — Toy Story 5 is coming in 2026 just like Bob Iger said, but now we have a release date! Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 will be released on June 19th, 2026. Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort The Wrap confirmed the date alongside the news that Disney has pushed quite a few release dates for 2025 and beyond. As far as the details on the next film in the Toy Story franchise go, well, Disney is keeping those pretty locked up — but we’re excited to see where this story goes, as many of us thought we had seen the last of Andy’s pals already! Click here to see more of what Andy’s pals are up to in Hollywood Studios! Disney’s Proxy Battle ENDED. Disney has been involved in a heated proxy battle with activist investor Nelson Peltz, who was petitioning to get multiple seats on the Company’s Board of Directors. ©Getty Images Trian Partners nominated Peltz and former Disney CFO Jay Rasulo to be elected to the Board, but Disney has made it clear they don’t endorse either candidate. It all came to a head during a vote at Disney’s 2024 Annual Shareholders Meeting, and now, we finally know who has come out as the victor in this long, drawn-out battle. ©Disney During today’s meeting, shareholders voted in support of Disney’s current board and the 12 directors it recommended. You can learn more about those 12 directors HERE. Disney announced that the shareholders voted in support of the Disney board’s slate and against Peltz and the Trian group as well as the Blackwell group. They reported that the current board’s recommendations won “by a substantial margin.” CNBC is reporting that the vote was decisive, with Peltz losing a seat on the board by a two-to-one margin, and former Disney Chief Financial Officer Jay Rasulo, who had joined Peltz’s campaign, lost by a nearly five-to-one margin. I’m a Disney World reporter, and I’ve done some pretty wild things to get content for our readers. Caribbean Beach Resort I’ve carried snacks halfway across the park to get pictures in front of Cinderella Castle, I’ve ridden the same ride four times in a row to get footage, and I’ve stayed in the parks well past midnight on more than one occasion — it’s all part of the job. But recently, I took a visit to Disney World where my editor made me do something pretty ridiculous! We often get asked by our readers what the BEST hotel rooms in Disney World are. And it’s a valid question! If you’re going to be spending the money to stay on-site, then you’ll definitely want to get the best room possible. But to find out which rooms were the best, my editor had me do some very bizarre research that required laser-focused concentration and made quite a feel people give me wary looks. Art of Animation We recently wrote an article detailing the best rooms at a variety of resorts, and that list included the numbers for rooms that are the CLOSEST to the Skyliner stations around Disney World. To find those rooms, I had to visit each of the Skyliner resorts in turn and physically count the steps to the nearest station. Caribbean Beach Skyliner Station Unfortunately, I don’t own a smartwatch that counts my steps, and my phone isn’t always accurate in relaying the number to me. Because of this, I rode the Skyliner to each hotel, found the closest rooms, and then physically counted my steps back to the stations. Out loud. If you want proof of my data, check out the results at the link below! Click Here to See Which Rooms Are Closest to the Skyliner! Disney’s Riviera Resort In the process, I was stopped by cars, interrupted by Cast Members, and many concerned looks were cast my way. But the mania didn’t stop there! Nope, after I finished my Skyliner count, my editor gave me an even more difficult task — to find the hotel room closest to Magic Kingdom. Magic Kingdom Entrance After some map glances and strategic planning, I determined that the closest hotel room to Magic Kingdom would be located at Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort (considering the fact that all the regular Contemporary Resort tower rooms are on the upper floors). So I started my journey at Magic Kingdom and took the walking path from the park to Bay Lake Tower, counting all my steps along the way. Contemporary Walkway While my other counting adventures hadn’t surpassed 300 steps, this one took me a whopping 1,006 steps from start to finish. I think I was really weirding out the families I passed, since I was whispering to myself, but I discovered that the closest hotel rooms to Magic Kingdom are Rooms 7111, 7109, 7132, or 7134 at Bay Lake Tower. Disney’s Bay Lake Tower It was a labor of love, but I completed the challenge! Just another day in the life of a DFB reporter, you guys. We do wild things to answer your questions and bring the best content, but it’s totally worth it to help our readers have the best vacations! Being on your phone is pretty much a necessity in Disney World these days. The My Disney Experience app (also called the Disney World app) is your one-stop shop for anything you might need on your vacation. My Disney Experience app The Disney World app is your park ticket and hotel room key, but it’s also how you can book dining reservations, order food, purchase souvenirs, check wait times, scan into Lightning Lanes, and more. But, all that work puts quite a bit of strain on your phone’s battery, which begs the question — Can Guest Relations charge your phone for you in the parks? The draining phone battery in Disney World is a problem we know all to well as folks who are constantly on our devices in the parks. But, we know it’s a common problem — which is why we’ve set out to find as many solutions for you as we can! Back in the day, Disney World Guest Relations would charge your phone for you if you needed it, but it had been a while since we confirmed. So, we headed to the parks to find out! EPCOT Guest Relations And, unfortunately — it’s not great news. Guest Relations did used to charge phones in dire scenarios, but that is no longer the case. Occasionally, they may have portable chargers like FuelRods for you to use while you’re standing there but they may not have the charging cables, rendering them pretty much useless. It’s still worth asking about if you’re in a pinch, but just know that they may say no. My Disney Experience app So, while Guest Relations won’t actually charge your phone for you — here are some things you can do instead. First, always keep a charger and power block in your park bag! There are actually quite a few places you can find outlets to charge your phone throughout the parks. At EPCOT, Connections Eatery and the nearby World Celebration Gardens are full of outlets — both AC and USB — and some of the tables even feature wireless charging. Outlets Another top tip we love is to pack a portable battery charger in addition to just the cable so that you can charge your phone on the go! Having to stop what you’re doing to sit and charge your phone can take up a big chunk of time, and time is important at Disney World! Being able to charge your phone no matter where you are in the parks can save you a major headache. OtterBox 50th Anniversary Portable Charger Kit And, if you’re really in a pinch — you can find FuelRod Kiosks all over Disney World and they can come in handy. These little portable chargers are sold in kiosks, and when you’ve depleted the battery on yours, you can exchange it for a fully charged one at any of those kiosks! These are super handy to carry around with us in the parks because we’re able to keep charged constantly. We don’t have to worry about losing power because they can always be swapped out for a fully charged one at any of the kiosks installed in the parks and hotels across Disney World. One of Disney’s most legendary attractions is getting an upgrade TOMORROW! ©Disney Star Tours first opened at Disneyland to massive hoopla in 1987, and almost immediately became one of the park’s most popular – and most beloved – attractions. Clones of the revolutionary-for-the-time simulator attractions came to both Walt Disney World’s MGM Studios theme park and Tokyo Disneyland in 1989, and opened with Disneyland Paris in 1992. For decades, Disney and George Lucas teased the idea that new ride films could be added to the attraction, which finally came to pass in the early 2010s when each version closed, only to be reopened as Star Tours: The Adventure Continues, with alternating randomized experiences featuring differed locales and characters from the Star Wars galaxy. Since the new versions opened, they have been continuously updated with additional alternating scenes from new Star Wars projects. The latest additions to Star Tours: The Adventure Continues will be debuting tomorrow, April 5th, at Disneyland, Hollywood Studios, and Disneyland Paris in conjunction with the start of Disneyland’s Season of the Force promotion. ©Disney These new show scenes are based on the Disney+ Star Wars shows Ahsoka, Andor, and The Mandalorian, and will features fan-favorite characters including Ahsoka Tano, Cassian Andor, Din Djarin, and the ADORABLE Baby Yoda himself, Grogu. ©Disney The new scenes will be added into the same randomized sequences that the ride already features, upping the number of possible combinations to well-over 250, and ensuring that ensuring that the no two experiences on Star Tours: The Adventure Continues in Anaheim, Orlando, or Paris are exactly the same. ©Disney As the Star Wars universe continues to expand across multimedia platforms, it seems like a given these additions won’t be the last added to Star Tours: The Adventure Continues. Disney World is in for a BIG weekend! And no, we’re not just talking about the latest ride change! Goofy and the Dreamers in 2023 Disney is no stranger to giving back and this week the company is giving back in the form of its Disney Dreamers Academy! Are you unfamiliar with the 4-day event that starts its celebration at Magic Kingdom? Don’t worry, we’ll explain everything! The Disney Dreamers Academy is a mentorship program that selects youth applicants to participate in a 4-day event at Disney World from April 4th to April 7th, 2024. It was created to “broaden career awareness and create exclusive enrichment opportunities for 100 Black high school students and teens from underrepresented communities,” according to Disney. Disney Dreamers Academy 2023 The event includes a Disney Dreamers Academy Pre-Parade in Magic Kingdom and a follow-up interview with Disney Executive Champion Tracey Powell and Dreambassador. We’re kicking things off by checking out the PARADE! Let’s go! Of course, Drum Major Mickey was here to lead the parade alongside the Dreamers, and we can’t get over his snazzy outfit! Bandleader Mickey! Not only that, but Princess Tiana was also featured alongside Dara Renee, who stars in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series on the Disney Channel. Dreamers The event sees the specially selected Disney Dreamers mentored through career workshops, interviewing skill-building, networking tutorials, and professional dress tips. Participants also receive complimentary airfare, hotel accommodations, and theme park tickets for themselves and a parent/guardian. Minnie and more Disney selected 100 young applicants between the ages of 13 to 19 to become Dreamers by looking for standouts who exemplify certain qualities, including “intellectual curiosity, compassion, courage, a positive outlook, generous spirit, and optimism about the future”. Per Disney, the name “Dreamer” is a reference to The Walt Disney Company’s first Dreamer — Walt Disney. Look at all those dreamers! We’re excited to see what the future holds for these young Dreamers! To keep up with Disney’s philanthropic programs as well as all things Disney, stay posted right here at DFB for all the latest! Disney World is home to so many inside jokes and secrets that people who don’t visit frequently can be left scratching their heads. Magic Kingdom Have you ever just stopped and taken mental notes of what you’re seeing and hearing at Disney World? Out of context, what you register could be considered pretty weird! For example, you paid to meet a rodent and get taken hostage by a militant galactic group known as the First Order, just to name a few oddities. In fact, there are a ton of things we see and hear at the parks that are completely disturbing outside the friendly confines of Disney World! We’ve put together a list of some of the normal phrases we’ve heard at Disney World that would be totally disturbing to hear outside of the parks and seven truly stood out! Let’s take a look! “Be sure to bring your death certificate, if you decide to join us. Make final arrangements now! We’ve been dying… to have you…” Little Leota ©Jeff Krause via Flickr Little Leota’s quote at the end of Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom, “Hurry back! Hurry back! Be sure to bring your death certificate, if you decide to join us. Make final arrangements now! We’ve been dying… to have you…” is incredibly famous and a very fitting way to end your ride. The Haunted Mansion But if someone told you to bring your death certificate with you and that they’ve “been dying to have you” out in the real world, chances are you’d be beyond disturbed — and for good reason! “Watch out for the spitting camel!” Not spitting right now The Magic Carpets of Aladdin at Magic Kingdom is pretty similar to Dumbo the Flying Elephant with one major difference — the camel scenery piece spits water at you! Magic Carpets It may be normal to hear, “Watch out for the spitting camel!” when you pass this attraction, but it would be pretty disturbing to hear this phrase in your daily life, especially if you live somewhere urban. “We pillage, we plunder, we rifle, and loot! Drink up me hearties! Yo ho! We kidnap and ravage and don’t give a hoot! Drink up me hearties! Yo ho!” We LOVE this ride! Who doesn’t love to sing along to Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me) when riding Pirates of the Caribbean at Magic Kingdom?! It’s a jolly good time…until you really start looking at lyrics. Pirates of the Caribbean “We pillage, we plunder, we rifle, and loot! Drink up me hearties! Yo ho! We kidnap and ravage and don’t give a hoot! Drink up me hearties! Yo ho!” is a reference to the many dastardly, vile, and often violent crimes perpetrated by pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy. Outside of Disney World, it would be disturbing to glorify these crimes, but this Disney-fied version of history isn’t as sinister and we love the ride for it! “Everyone turn around and wave goodbye to the folks back on the dock… They may never see you again.” Jungle Cruise Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Cruise is the epicenter of dad jokes at Disney World, so when we hear phrases like “Everyone turn around and wave goodbye to the folks back on the dock… They may never see you again.” or jokes about sinking, we simply laugh and don’t think much of it. Jungle Cruise Skipper However, if you were aboard a real cruise and your captain alluded to never seeing dry land or anyone else again, the joke would probably be less funny and more disturbing. This is why we love Disney World so much — you can make these kinds of jokes and, at the end of the day, feel completely safe and reassured. “Brace yourselves! This is it! They’re not gonna make it! They’re not gonna make it!” Dinosaur in Animal Kingdom Dr. Seeker’s exclamation, “Brace yourselves! This is it! They’re not gonna make it! They’re not gonna make it!” in Animal Kingdom’s DINOSAUR ride is a fun little exclamation that only adds to the theatrics of the experience. It’s Dr. Seeker! That being said, if a scientist started panicking about your wellbeing outside of Disney World, that could be unsettling, to say the least. While we might enjoy the chaos of a thrilling Disney attraction, we’d prefer to leave that excitement inside the parks! “It’s only a 60-minute wait!” 60-minute wait for Tower of Terror When you visit Disney World, you do so with the expectation of waiting — A LOT OF WAITING. For some E-ticket attractions, that’s acceptable and anything around an hour or under can be considered a moderate wait. We suffer long wait times and winding queues to ride beloved attractions that we feel justify the wait. Long line at the monorail We are not nearly that patient outside of Disney World and would be MORTIFIED to wait as long as we do for some of the attractions at the Disney Parks. Ah, the things we’re willing to put up with for Disney but not for anything else. “I bit off the ear!” Mickey Bar! Some of the most iconic Disney World snacks are shaped like Mickey Mouse — naturally. There isn’t anything disturbing about that. However… mmm…snacks! When you walk by someone and they say “I just bit off the ear!”, you might not think twice at Disney Parks. Outside of them though, your mind may wander to disturbing places. Fortunately, if you hear this phrase at Disney World, there’s a 99.99% chance that someone just took a bite of a delicious snack, such as a Mickey Ice Cream Bar or Mickey-shaped Pretzel! Nothing beats a Mickey waffle! The Walt Disney Company just held its Annual Meeting of Shareholders for 2024 and came out victorious in the battle for seats on the Board of Directors. ©Disney Disney CEO Bob Iger referred to the proxy battle as a “distraction” during a question-and-answer session held after the meeting, where he also gave updates on several different areas of business — including a new trailer for Inside Out 2 and a new look at the Moana sequel. And, Iger yet again commented on Disney’s “woke agenda” in movies. During the April 3rd meeting, shareholders voted in support of Disney’s current board and the 12 directors it recommended. You can learn more about that decision here, but it was CEO Bob Iger’s comments after the vote during a question-and-answer session where things really started to heat up — especially when he was asked whether or not it was possible for Disney to stay out of the “social and political debate.” ©Disney Disney and Iger have been accused of pushing a “woke agenda” with its latest film and television releases, diversity initiatives, and overall commitments to inclusion. During the 2023 Shareholder Meeting, one individual shared how, in their opinion, Disney’s films and entertainment are “increasingly promoting the woke agenda.” They went on to accuse Disney of choosing to “collaborate” with “predators to sing to children.” The individual concluded with another question, “Would it not be beneficial for the Company to ditch the LGBTQIA+ and gender ideology for good?” His advice was to “Turn Disney back to the a-political fun place that it used to be and I bet that you’ll win back both the trust of families and the stock market.” Cinderella Castle Iger’s response back then was to say that Disney prides itself on being “accessible to all people.” He acknowledged that Disney has “recently gotten criticism…for what some perceive to be agenda-driven content.” Iger shared that he is sensitive to that and that Disney’s “primary mission needs to be to entertain.” To drive this home, Iger said, “I’m very serious about that. It should not be agenda-driven. It should be entertainment-driven. That should be the goal in all of our stories.” ©Disney It seems Iger hasn’t changed his thoughts on the matter, because when he was asked a similar question during the 2024 Shareholder Meeting, he said: “Our job is to entertain first and foremost, and by telling great stories, we continue to have a positive impact on the world and inspire future generations, just as we’ve done for over 100 years. Disney has always been and will continue to be a source of hope, joy and optimism for people of all ages. We’re committed to telling stories that reflect the world around us and using those stories to entertain people from all walks of life.” ©Disney He continued, “I’ve always believed that we have a responsibility to do good in the world. But we know our job is not to advance any kind of agenda. So as long as I’m in the job, I’m going to continue to be guided by a sense of decency and respect. And we will always trust our instincts.” Hollywood Studios Ultimately, though, Iger said he doesn’t “get distracted by those things” when asked about Elon Musk’s trolling of the company. “People have been coming after me and the company for years,” he added. And as far as Disney’s “woke agenda” goes, he said, “The term woke is thrown around rather liberally, no pun intended in that regard. I think a lot of people don’t even understand really what it means.” EPCOT “I think the noise is sort of quieted down. I’ve been preaching this for a long time at the company before I left and since I came back then our number one goal is to entertain,” he continued. “The bottom line is that infusing messaging as a sort of a number one priority in our films and TV shows is not what we’re up to. They need to be entertaining, and where the Disney company can have a positive impact on the world whether it’s you know, fostering acceptance and understanding of people of all different types, great. “But generally speaking, we need to be an entertainment first company … And understanding that look, we’re trying to reach a very, very diverse audience. And on one hand in order to do that, what you do, the stories you tell, have to really reflect the audience that you’re trying to reach, but that audience because they are so diverse, really, first and foremost, they want to be entertained, and sometimes they can’t be turned off by certain things. And we just have to be more sensitive to the interest of a broad audience. It’s not easy, you know, so that he can’t please everybody all the time, right?” ©Apple What this means for the future of Disney content remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure — we’ll be on the lookout for the latest news and updates from the Walt Disney Company. 10 Controversial Things Bob Iger Has Said About Disney’s Alleged ‘Woke Agenda’ Join the DFB Newsletter to get all the breaking news right in your inbox! If you’ve been to Disney World in the past, you’ve probably tried many of the restaurants in the parks and a few in Disney Springs, but sometimes, the HOTEL restaurants are where it’s at! Port Orleans Resort — Riverside Some of the best food in all of Disney World is located at the resorts, and we’ve got a long list of hidden gems that are often overlooked. During your next trip, you might want to venture outside of your typical dining comfort zone, and if you’re interested in trying something new, then you need to check out this dining review! Atmosphere Welcome to Boatwright’s Dining Hall! This restaurant is located in the main building of Disney’s Port Orleans Resort — Riverside, and I made a recent visit to check out some of the new menu offerings! Boatwright’s Dining Hall You can enter the restaurant either through the lobby by walking down the hallway or around the back by the Sassagoula River. Boatwright’s sign inside When you first walk in, you’ll come to the host’s podium. This is where you can check in for your reservation if you haven’t already done it through the My Disney Experience app. It’s not terribly difficult to get a reservation here — they often have Walk-up Waitlist or last-minute availability. Host’s stand The restaurant has three different dining areas. There’s a main room right as you enter with an upper balcony-like area… Main dining area …one room immediately after you go up the stairs… The first upstairs room …and then a third, quieter room in the back of the restaurant. The back room As fits the name, Boatwright’s has a boat-building theme. You’ll noticed pieces of partially-finished boats, as well as various boat-building tools hanging on the wall throughout the restaurant. A boat in progress! It’s a very rustic and workshop-like vibe in here. If you like warm lighting, wood, and brick accents, you’ll feel cozy and at home. You’ll see all kinds of tools on the wall There are all kinds of circular saws, corkscrews, and various tools mounted to the walls. Your handyman dad would probably find this restaurant fascinating! More tools Now let’s dive in to the menu! Menu Since it’s located at Port Orleans Resort — Riverside, the menu is inspired by both Louisiana and southern favorites. On the appetizer list, you’ll find options like French Onion Soup Au Gratin, Pimento Cheese Fritters, Louisiana BBQ Shrimp, and Jambalaya Farro Salad. Appetizers Menu If you’re a little-bit-of-everything kind of person, you might want to try the Taste of the Bayou platter. For more specific tastes, they have choices like Seafood Boil, Roasted Prime Rib, jambalaya, Cajun chicken, Shrimp and Grits, and fish. Entrees Of course, like many Disney restaurants, they have several specialty cocktails. You could try the Bourbon Peach Tea, the Whiskey Sour, or the Hurricane, to name a few. They also have draft beer, mocktails, and soft drinks. Beverages On the dessert menu, we’ve got four new treats available! These arrived recently and include the Cafe au Lait Pot de Creme, Banana Cream Pie Cheesecake, Praline-Bourbon Bread Pudding, and Pecan Pie Tart. Desserts Boatwright’s also has a selection of dessert cocktails and specialty hot beverages for you to pair with the end of your meal. Dessert beverages Now it’s time to eat! Let’s get some food! Eats To start the meal, they brought Cornbread with Honey Butter to my table! I love a restaurant with a complimentary bread service, and I was very excited to try this one. Cornbread with honey butter The cornbread was nicely sweetened and had a good corn flavor. The butter was smooth, and the honey really complemented the bread. My one complaint is that the cornbread was a tiny bit dry, but the butter helped alleviate some of that. Looks delicious! While I snacked on my cornbread, I ordered my first course, and it arrived shortly after. I got the Pimento Cheese Fritters for my appetizer, and the Shrimp and Grits as the entree. Let’s eat! First up, I had the Pimento Cheese Fritters for $12, which are house-made. They’re essentially fried balls of pimento cheese topped with pepper jelly, and they were DIVINE. Pimento Cheese Fritters They were SO cheesy on the inside, and the pepper jelly added both a sweetness and a spiciness to the overall flavor profile. I only wish I’d gotten more fritters with my order because three was too few and a bit small on the portion size for the price. Inside the fritters Next up was the Shrimp and Grits for $26. It’s made with sustainable shrimp and andouille sausage served with spicy cream sauce over creamy Charleston-style grits. As both a shrimp and grits connoisseur and a South Carolina native, I was incredibly intrigued. Shrimp & Grits And I’ll be honest with you — these were some of the best shrimp and grits I’ve eaten in Disney World! The grits were smooth and cheesy, and the shrimp were peeled and deveined (it’s a big pet peeve of mine when they don’t do that with this dish). The sauce was creamy, and there was a decent portion of meat throughout. I would 100% come back to order these again! YUM! Wrapping up the meal, I wanted to try out two of the new desserts! I got both the Praline-Bourbon Bread Pudding and the Banana Cream Pie Cheesecake. Dessert spread The Praline-Bourbon Bread Pudding was the one I was more excited about. It’s $9 and made with pecan praline sauce, bourbon-soaked raisins, and vanilla ice cream. I recently had a similar dessert at House of Blues in Disney Springs, and I was interested to compare the two. Praline-Bourbon Bread Pudding As far as bread puddings go in Disney World, this one is landing VERY near the top of the list! It was soft with just the right amount of chew, very moist, and full of delicious, rich flavor from the praline sauce and the bourbon raisins. The ice cream cooled it down a touch and added a lightness to it all. Phenomenal, and honestly topping the House of Blues version by just a little bit! (That one is very delicious as well!) A scoop of bread pudding The Banana Cream Pie Cheesecake is made with toasted meringue, caramelized bananas, and caramel sauce, and it was a winner as well! You can get it for $11. Banana Cream Pie Cheesecake The cheesecake was incredibly creamy and had a nice, light banana flavor. The caramelized bananas had a fun chewy texture that worked well with the smooth parts of the rest of the dessert, and the meringue on top added some sweetness. This doesn’t quite top the bread pudding for me, but it’s a very close second. A scoop of cheesecake Let’s round out this review — what did I think? Overall If you read through the rest of the review, you won’t be surprised to know that I LOVED this meal. Honestly, I was shocked! I’d dined at Boatwright’s in the past and my party had only been moderately impressed, but this time it blew me away. Everything I ate was phenomenal. Boatwright’s sign My top two dishes of the night were the Shrimp and Grits and the bread pudding, but I would re-order any of it again! And if you’re in the area or have extra time on your vacation, I definitely recommend Boatwright’s. Nosh or Not? Dine under a deconstructed boat if… You’re staying at Port Orleans Resort. This restaurant is a MUST if you’re staying at Port Orleans — either the Riverside or French Quarter sections. There is boat and bus transportation between the two hotel areas, so I would suggest dining here on a resort day or after a park day. You love southern comfort food. There are plenty of places to get southern comfort cuisine and seafood in Disney World, but if you’ve already tried other spots, this is a great choice! I might not pick it over easier-to-get-to spots at Disney Springs, but it’s a great option if you’ve got your own vehicle or want to ride the boat down the Sassagoula. You’re a dessert person. Very rarely do we recommend desserts highly at table service restaurants, but I wouldn’t skip it here at Boatwright’s! Float on past Boatwright’s if… You have a party of picky eaters. This isn’t your classic burgers and chicken tenders kind of place, so you’ll only want to come here if you’ve got people who are open to the more adventurous menu. You’re on a budget. The options here aren’t too expensive for a table service, but since I recommend getting appetizers and dessert here, you might want to wait until you have a bit more saved to dine here. You’re not going to be in the area or don’t have transportation. It can be difficult to get to other Disney World hotels during your vacation if you’re not staying there. Even though you can get to Port Orleans from the Disney Springs area or by taking a bus from one of the parks, this might be a challenge if you’re limited on time during your trip. Spring Break is still in FULL swing in Disney World. Magic Kingdom The parks are still pretty crowded, Genie+ is getting up there in price (and has even sold out recently), and wait times are SUPER high. Well, we’re going to give you an idea of just how busy things are right now: Magic Kingdom is officially at capacity for the day. This doesn’t happen often, but right now if you try to park hop to Magic Kingdom, you won’t be able to. We even got a notification in the My Disney Experience app to inform us of this with a number to call to check on Magic Kingdom’s status: 407-560-5000. ©Disney . However, if you have a park pass reservation (which is only required for some visitors) for Magic Kingdom, you’ll still be able to get in. We’d also like to note that park pass reservations are also gone for today in Magic Kingdom. Magic Kingdom entrance We shouldn’t be too surprised. We were at Magic Kingdom this morning and just trying to get to the parking lot at the Ticket and Transportation Center was a lesson in patience. Traffic was pretty backed up, and we think this might be one of the longest times we’ve ever had to wait to park. LONG wait to park Inside, we saw some pretty long lines. The Lightning Lane — the LIGHTNING LANE — for Haunted Mansion extended beyond Memento Mori. The standby line is currently at 90 minutes…and rising. Ouch. Haunted Mansion Lightning Lane We also noticed really high wait times for other rides, too. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad had a wait time of 110 minutes by midday, “it’s a small world” had a wait of 75 minutes, Jungle Cruise had a wait of 95 minutes, and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train was at 125 minutes (and the Individual Lightning Lane option was sold out). But what shocked us the most was the 60-minute wait for mad Tea Party! WHAT? This is why we tend to tell folks to avoid Disney World if they can this time of year. Otherwise, you’ll just need to pack your patience and be willing to be very flexible with your plans. It’s also a good idea if you have a trip coming up soon, you’ll want to go to Magic Kingdom FIRST thing in the day, just in case it hits capacity. You can always park hop somewhere else later if you have the park hopper ticket option. Stay tuned to DFB for more!
