Over the holidays, Disney World creates beautiful, life-sized gingerbread displays at several of the resort hotels. 2024 Grand Floridian Gingerbread House Probably the most iconic of these gingerbread displays is the gingerbread house at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, but the carousel at Disney’s Beach Club, the baby animals at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, the castle at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, and the BoardWalk Bakery at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn are all amazing! Each of these gingerbread displays returns year after year, but this year, Disney added a brand-new display NOT at a hotel! This year, there’s a new Spaceship Earth gingerbread display at EPCOT; let’s check it out! Not only does it have lights on the display, but it also plays the Beacon of Light show just like the real Spaceship Earth does each night. The clock on the front of the display counts down until the next showing, which is every 15 minutes (currently, the sign says every 30 minutes, but a Cast Member let us know that it is every 15 minutes and the sign will be getting updated). Don’t miss the show! The iconic music for the show is played while the lights transform the display into a beautiful showcase. It’s seriously INCREDIBLE. Yes, we’ve been celebrating the holiday season since November 1st, but now that Thanksgiving is out of the way, we’re ready to put our hearts and souls into the celebration. It’s that time of year! That means eating even MORE holiday snacks in Disney World (obviously), as well as continuing to enjoy the holiday decorations, gingerbread displays, and more! Then there are TWO holiday parties: Jollywood Nights and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. However, we’ve got big plans to stay at home on December 1st because something EPIC is happening on our TVs on that date: the Wonderful World of Disney: Holiday Spectacular. Disney’s annual holiday spectacular is filmed in Magic Kingdom in November every year and usually features a star-studded list of celebrities with musical and dance performances and more. Disney World and I go way back. Like WAY back (think of days as a kid with your Mickey ears permanently glued to your head kind of way back). Magic Kingdom And if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years about Disney World is that, Disney sure knows how to separate us from our cash, especially when it comes to options to increase the convenience for you (looking at you Lightning Lane). All of that can make it a bit tough to try to plan out a budget that works well for your trip, but that’s what we’re here for. We’ve tried every single Lightning Lane option under the sun at Disney World, and good news! We’ve got some ways for you to avoid paying for any of them! As we were saying, if you’re not careful on your Disney World trip, you can become separated from your cash faster than you realized. So, to that point, we want to remind you of something. Say this with me: “You don’t have to pay for Lightning Lanes to have an amazing Disney day!” Haunted Mansion Lightning Lane I’ll skip the rest of that exercise where I have you repeat it again, and then tell your neighbor (you get the drift). Seriously though, you don’t need to pay for the option to skip the crowds. Take our word for it. We’ve tried every Lightning Lane option there is and we’ve picked up some clever hacks to avoid forking over extra cash while still skipping those endless lines. So, let’s dive right in! Don’t Pay for Lightning Lanes at All Let’s start with the basics: you don’t HAVE to buy Lightning Lanes (sorry to be a broken record, we just want you to get it). Yes, Disney’s been hyping them up like crazy lately, especially with that new Lightning Lane Premier Pass (which costs a small fortune and is only available to deluxe resort guests). Sure, they’re convenient. Lightning Lane But if you’re strategic, you can bypass the crowds without spending a single extra penny. Here’s how: Go When Disney Is Less Crowded If this is going to be your first trip to Disney World, you’re going to learn really quickly that timing is everything when it comes to avoiding lines at Disney. If you can swing it, plan your trip during Disney’s off-season. This means avoiding peak times like: School breaks (spring break, summer vacation, holidays) Weekends Holiday-specific events like Christmas and Halloween parties It is PACKED! Instead, you’ll typically want to aim for late August or September when the kids are back in school. Or you could try mid-January to early February when the post-holiday lull sets in. As an added bonus the prices for tickets and hotels are often lower during these periods, too. Fewer people = shorter lines = less stress. Wake Up for Rope Drop (It’s Worth It, I Promise) If you’ve been around Disney fans for five minutes, you’ve probably heard of “rope drop” which is a fancy term for getting inside the parks right when they open. This is one of the BEST ways to knock out popular rides before the lines explode. Here’s how to do it like a pro: Arrive 30 minutes before opening. Sometimes Disney opens the gates a bit early for guests to start queueing, so you want to be there ASAP. Hit up the biggies first. In Magic Kingdom, this means rides like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. At Hollywood Studios, beeline it to Rise of the Resistance. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train And then afterwards, you can “reward yourself” with Disney coffee after you’ve crushed a couple of rides. Priorities, right? Take Advantage of Early Theme Park Entry If you’re staying at a Disney hotel, or one of their good-neighbor hotels, you’re in luck. Early Theme Park Entry gives you access to the parks a full 30 minutes before they officially open. Thirty minutes might not sound like much, but trust me — it’s enough to get a solid jump on the crowds. Here are some of the rides we’ve hit up during Early Entry: Fantasyland rides like Peter Pan’s Flight in Magic Kingdom Toy Story Land rides like Slinky Dog Dash in Hollywood Studios Early Entry On top of that, if you’re staying at a deluxe resort, you get an extra perk: Extended Evening Hours, which let you enjoy select parks for an additional two hours on certain nights. Fewer people and cooler evening temps? Sounds like a win-win to me. Become One With the Night Owls If mornings aren’t your thing (I see you, fellow night owls), this strategy might just be your golden ticket. At Disney, as long as you’re in line before a ride’s posted closing time, you’ll still get to ride even if the park officially closes while you’re waiting. TRON Lightcycle / Run For example, I’ve hopped into the line for Flight of Passage just 15 minutes before Animal Kingdom’s closing time. Even though the line was still long, Disney always makes sure everyone in the queue gets to ride. Avatar Flight of Passage I do want you to know, however, that this strategy is a gamble. If the ride goes down for maintenance or, heaven forbid, a “protein spill” (Disney’s polite way of saying someone got sick), then you’re out of luck. Sacrifice a Nighttime Spectacular Okay, hear me out. Disney’s nighttime shows are incredible—fireworks, projections, music, tears of joy, the works. BUT if you’re willing to skip a nighttime spectacular, you can take advantage of the fact that most guests will be watching it instead of riding rides. Ride this DURING the fireworks — you get a show AND a ride! For example, at EPCOT, I’ll choose to hop in the line for Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure during my Early Theme Park Entry time, and then 20-30 minutes before Luminous begins towards the end of the day, I’ll jump in line for Frozen Ever After! The Frozen Ever After wait is NEVER this low! It’s all about priorities. Sure, I love a good fireworks display, but sometimes knocking out a few extra rides is just worth it. Our Final Thoughts Sure, Disney might be nudging you to spend extra on Lightning Lanes, but that doesn’t mean you HAVE to. With a little strategy and planning, you can dodge long lines, ride your favorites, and still have an amazing Disney World day without spending a dime on extra passes. It’s time for the Festival of the Holidays! It’s time to take your first look at this year’s Festival of the Holidays passport to see what all you have to enjoy this holiday season at EPCOT. We’re getting our first peek at this year’s Festival Map and Passport for EPCOT’s International Festival of the Holidays! The 2024 EPCOT Festival of the Holidays is officially here, and we’re bringing you with us to check it all out! 2024 EPCOT Festival of the Holidays There are plenty of food booths with tasty items, shows and storytellers to watch, souvenirs to grab (of course), and even a cookie stroll to complete. But don’t let it overwhelm you — we’ve got you covered with everything you need to know. Now, it’s time to see exactly what this festival has to offer — so come along with us LIVE! The Festival Passport is a SUPER helpful tool to help make sure you accomplish everything during your day at EPCOT. It’s organized to help you see exactly what’s available and when things are available, so you don’t have to wander the park without a plan. You’ll also find info about the Cookie Stroll! To participate in the Cookie Stroll, you’ll purchase five cookies from festival marketplaces around EPCOT (there’s a list of several different cookies you can choose from in the passport, along with where you’ll find them) and get your passport stamped at each booth when you buy a cookie. Holiday Cookie Stroll Once you have 5 stamps, you can show your passport at Holiday Sweets and Treats for a free treat! Click here to see INSIDE the Festival Passport Crowds Most of the Holiday Kitchens do not officially open until around 11AM, but that doesn’t mean that crowds aren’t already waiting to get their hands on some eats! There was a small crowd building ahead of the official park opening, but we’ll be sure to keep our eyes on the crowd level throughout the day. There were a lot of people at EPCOT this morning! Thanksgiving Week is typically pretty busy in Disney World anyway, so that, combined with it being the first day of this festival, means many were expecting to see some serious crowds on opening day. Entertainment Candlelight Processional One of the most popular events at the EPCOT Festival of the Holidays is the Candlelight Processional. Candlelight Processional You can head to the standby line or book a dining package to reserve your spot at the show. This show tends to attract some LARGE crowds, so be prepared and get there early! Olaf’s Holiday Tradition Scavenger Hunt If you want a fun activity the whole family can enjoy, Olaf’s Holiday Tradition Scavenger Hunt is a super fun way to spot hidden statues of Olaf all over EPCOT. Olaf is hiding with various holiday-themed items around the park, and it’s your job to find him! Olaf Scavenger Hunt Board You can play the game on your own or purchase a gameboard for $9.99, which includes stickers and clues for all the Olaf locations. If you purchase a gameboard, you can return the completed board for a prize! Storytellers One of the best parts of the EPCOT Festival of the Holidays is the Storytellers in each country’s pavilion — we love learning about holiday traditions around the world. Hanukkah Storyteller We can’t wait to see Barn Santa from Norway, a Chinese Lion Dancer for the Lunar New Year, Pere Noel from France, Hanukkah stories, and more. Joyful! A Celebration of the Season Joyful! A Celebration of the Season is also returning to this year’s festival. Joyful: A Celebration of the Season! This is a show featuring gospel and R&B entertainment that celebrates both Christmas and Kwanzaa! We had so much fun listening to the performers! We LOVE taking a break from the parks and spending a day in Disney Springs instead! Disney World fans are a passionate bunch and that’s never put on display more than when huge changes are announced for the parks. Muppets Courtyard in Hollywood Studios The latest update that has fans up in arms is Disney’s announcement that a new Monsters, Inc. land would be taking over the current Muppets Courtyard space in Hollywood Studios. Before the announcement, much speculation had stirred about where exactly the new land would go — and now that we know, fans are convinced Disney just blew a big opportunity. It’s official — the new Monsters, Inc. land will be located on the south side of Grand Avenue at Disney’s Hollywood Studios — also known as Muppets Courtyard. And, with this major change, we’ll have to say goodbye to Muppet*Vision 3D, PizzeRizzo, Mama Melrose, and the bathrooms in this area. ©Disney But, fans seem to be convinced this was a big mistake — and we can see why. You see, back when Disney first announced this new land at the D23 Expo, they hadn’t yet shared just where this new land would go. Fans pretty quickly surmised that it had to be one of two options: Muppets Courtyard, where it is going, or Animation Courtyard, which is currently home to… not a whole lot. Animation Courtyard Right now, Animation Courtyard is where you’ll find the Disney Junior — Live on Stage! show and the former home of the Voyage of the Little Mermaid show (which is currently being reworked and will reopen with a new name), along with Walt Disney Presents and Star Wars Launch Bay. Disney Junior Dance Party Ultimately, none of these attractions are particularly popular these days — and certainly not more popular than Muppet*Vision 3D, so why would Disney choose to retheme that area instead of Animation Courtyard? Of course, Disney obviously has their reasons that we’re not privy to, but we can’t help but still feel like an overhaul of Animation Courtyard is well overdue. Voyage of the Little Mermaid Based on the concept art of the new Monsters, Inc. land, it’s clear that Disney plans to reuse and repurpose many of the buildings that are currently in Muppets Courtyard — albeit with a ton of work to retheme them. Still, it’s possible that this is what sealed the deal. ©Disney Monsters, Inc. land will be home to a new restaurant (which will likely go where Mama Melrose’s currently sits — or at least in that area), a new stage show (which looks like it will take over the Muppet*Vision theater), plus new shopping and more. By taking over the current Muppets space, Disney just has to retheme buildings instead of erecting new ones altogether as they’d most likely have to over in Animation Courtyard. Either way — the next few years are sure to be interesting at Disney World! ©Disney We’ll be on the lookout for even more Muppet and Monsters, Inc. land news from Disney, so stay tuned. Disney Cruise Line vacations are wonderful to many people, but there are also lots of people out there who say that they’re definitely NOT cruise people. Disney Wonder Some say it’s because they’re more go-go-go on vacation and don’t like the idea of sitting around and “doing nothing” while others may get seasick easily and a cruise therefore sounds like their worst nightmare. For others though, it’s because they think of cruises as walking petri dishes, and being stuck on a ship with all those germs and no route of escape sounds terrifying. While some cruise lines certainly score low on their federal inspection scores, Disney Cruise Line is one of the cleanest cruise lines, consistently getting some of the highest scores. But what EXACTLY does that look like? Did you know that you can look up the most recent (and past) Sanitation Program scores for ALL cruise ships on the CDC website? Yes, that includes all the Disney Cruise Line ships, as well as other cruise lines you may be thinking of sailing. Any ship that gets below a score of 85 or lower are considered unsatisfactory and must be fixed as soon as humanly possible. Disney Wish So where does Disney score on that, you may ask? Well, taking a look at the most recent sanitation reports from each Disney Cruise Line ship (minus the ships that have not publicly sailed yet, such as the Disney Treasure), the Disney Wish has the LOWEST score of 95 with its last inspection done on May 27th, 2024 (which is intriguing since this is one of the newer ships, having set sail on July 14th, 2022). The highest score, however, is a perfect 100 made by the Disney Fantasy (which set sail on March 31st, 2012) on their last inspection date, January 24th, 2024. The remaining three ships land between 96 and 99. ©CDC This means that all of Disney’s ships are well above the “unacceptable” 85 or lower score, but there is something to note here that we find interesting. We looked back at data from January 2022 to December 2023 to see what the most recent past scores are, and here, the lowest scores were the Disney Wonder and Disney Wish both with a 96 — all other scores were either 99 or 100! ©CDC Does this mean Disney’s cleaning standards have gone down? It’s hard to say, but it’s clear that the ships are still kept extremely clean and don’t let their scores drop anywhere close to 85. However, this doesn’t mean you WON’T get sick on or after your Disney Cruise — be sure you wash your hands thoroughly before eating, don’t leave your room or visit the infirmary if you’re not feeling well as to not spread your germs, and be sure to bring some medication if you know that changes in climate often cause allergies or sinus issues for you.
