A few months ago, when we were last out at Circle D Ranch for the Norco Labor Day Parade, we had the opportunity to learn about a very special show harness. Handmade at the Disneyland Resort, with inlay leather and Disneyland motifs, this harness also features a distinctly decorative piece, known as the “Scotch Top.” This particular harness is not often seen when Disneyland Resort horses participate in community parades, as it is made for a single horse; typically our horses pull in tandem. However, for the recent Labor Day parade, multiple horses were chosen to represent the Disneyland Resort – so Chief was the lucky horse who got to wear this special harness. In the video below, you can learn more about the “Scotch Top” from Circle D Ranch Guest Service Manager Jen Gable, and you can see Chief proudly wearing it! View the full article

Today, cast members at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa at the Disneyland Resort celebrated the completion of the hotel-wide renovation. Guests can now enjoy completely redesigned guest rooms plus a refreshed lobby, pool area and concierge-level lounge! To commemorate the occasion, an emblematic orange tree was presented to the hotel’s cast. The orange tree motif can be found throughout the hotel’s new design! As part of the most extensive refurbishment since the hotel’s 2001 opening, the renovation brings an even more upscale experience to the hotel, while staying true to its signature Arts & Crafts design style. If you’d like to tour around Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and learn a few fun facts about the hotel, check out the video below! Exactly one year ago, I shared the news that Ray-Ban was introducing a new sunglass design, inspired by the one-and-only Mickey Mouse. To no one’s surprise, the glasses were a huge hit! Back by popular demand, guests can soon discover a fresh take on the popular product which will now feature polarized grey gradient lenses with that classic black and white Mickey Mouse pattern you loved so much. If you’re still looking for the perfect gift for that hard-to-shop-for friend, I think you may have just found it! As Sunglass Hut is the official sunglass retailer of the Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts, these sunglasses will be available in limited quantities, while supplies last, at the following locations, beginning on December 8: Walt Disney World Resort: Sunglass Icon at Disney Springs Island Supply by Sunglass Hut at Magic Kingdom Park Disneyland Resort: Sunglass Icon at Downtown Disney District Disney California Adventure Kiosk With a retail price of $243, you can also expect a special gift with purchase – an exclusive Mickey Mouse cleaning cloth – when you purchase in-store. Discounts do not apply and there is a five-pair purchase limit per customer. Last year, I hoped that Santa would bring me a pair, but no luck! I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they’ll find their way under my tree this holiday season. (Hint, hint to any of my loved ones who may be reading this.) Will you be adding these amazing Ray-Ban sunglasses to your wish list this year, too? View the full article

As you may know, Caribbean Beach Resort is undergoing a refurbishment that is affecting the entire Resort, from dining options to the guest check-in area and far beyond. Caribbean Beach Resort Concept Art ©Disney Disney is now releasing concept art for what the results of this renovation will yield, and we are excited to finally be learning more about the refreshed dining options — and more! — coming to Caribbean Beach Resort! But here’s the weird part…all of this “news” seems verrrrry familiar… . Read on. Shutters You remember Shutters, right? The Table Service restaurant at Caribbean Beach Resort? No? Well, perhaps that’s because it hasn’t provided the most memorable of Resort dining options over the years. However, it sounds like that may change once the Caribbean-inspired Shutters reopens on the waterfront of Old Port Royale. Caribbean Beach Resort Concept Art ©Disney Shutters will transport guests to a beachfront home in the islands, with large open shutters allowing the sunlight to drench the dining room. The spot will celebrate the “natural beauty of the Caribbean” with design elements including floral motifs and handmade items. Centertown Market Look for Centertown Market to once again offer a Quick Service option to guests within an indoor street market setting. The space will be accented with colored light pendants made from glass bottles, and further elements will include shutters, wooden light posts, awnings and, of course, seating. (What’s that? This doesn’t look all that different from what was there before? Agreed… .) Caribbean Beach Resort Concept Art ©Disney So, while you’ll obviously be welcome to stay and dine, a Grab n’ Go market will also be available featuring on-the-go options and specialty coffee. Banana Cabana You know we love Banana Cabana, Caribbean Beach’s pool bar! The refreshed spot will serve food along with drinks, which we can look forward to enjoying in an immersive “island life” setting. Here is a look at the bar’s previous look before it closed for the refurbishment. Former Banana Cabana Seating areas will be flanked by cabana-style drapes while re-purposed steel drums will deliver light to a large central community table formed by a wooden boat. Old Port Royale Old Port Royale will become the “port of entry” for Caribbean Beach Resort guests. Caribbean Beach Resort Concept Art ©Disney This location is within easy access to all of the Resort’s soon-to-be enhanced dining offerings, as well as to the Calypso Trading Post merchandise location. Our Thoughts? So… from what I’m reading, Shutters will basically be the same, but just opened up to the water. Centertown Market seems to be exactly the same. Banana Cabana will basically be the same, but will serve some food. The biggest change on the horizon is that it sounds like Old Port Royale will be the check-in and registration area now? Which would be great, if that’s the case, to have one central lobby area with food offerings in the same building. Look for these “updates” to be made in Summer 2018. I can’t wait to hear what you think! What are your thoughts on the updated Caribbean Beach Resort? Please let us know with a comment! There are not one, but FOUR new dining venues opening soon in Disney Springs: The Edison, which we have been anticipating for some time now, and the more recently announced trio of Maria & Enzo’s Ristorante, Enzo’s Hideaway Tunnel Bar, and Pizza Ponte. The Edison Sneak Peek ©Disney While all four spots are anticipated to open within the next month, Disney has provided a sneak peek of the upcoming destinations! The Edison First announced for Disney Springs in 2015, The Edison is at long last in its final stages of preparation. What is said to have once been the power plant for the town of Disney Springs, the location still contains artifacts and pieces from its original purpose — as evidenced by the Boiler Bar and surrounding boilers, and the still-functioning clock tower — all contributing to the Industrial Gothic setting. The Edison Sneak Peek ©Disney The Edison will be open to families and the kiddos every day starting with lunch hours and going into the early evening. The Edison Sneak Peek ©Disney However, around 10:00 pm every evening, the space will be dedicated to adults-only (21 and over), boasting a unique beverage and dining menu along with entertainment “unlike anything else at Disney Springs,” according to Disney. Entertainment options are rumored to include aerialists, contortionists, palm readers, and DJs. aerialists from The Edison in Los Angeles Pizza Ponte Maria & Enzo are said to have once run a bakery in what was the Disney Springs Air Terminal. In the time since the terminal closed, Maria & Enzo purchased and transformed the location into three restaurants, the first of which was Pizza Ponte. Pizza Ponte made its start by serving Sicilian-style pizza by the slice to the residents of the waterfront town of Disney Springs, along with made-to-order sandwiches, and handmade Italian pastries like Bombolini. It was the success of Pizza Ponte which allowed Maria & Enzo to transform the rest of the terminal to include two other spots including… Maria & Enzo’s Ristorante Maria & Enzo’s Ristorante is the table service option in this trio of Italian eateries. Maria & Enzo’s Ristorante Sneak Peek ©Disney The vaulted ceilings of the former departure lounge remain as part of the main dining room, offering great views of Lake Buena Vista, which guests can enjoy along with Sicilian cuisine. Maria & Enzo’s Ristorante Sneak Peek ©Disney A second, smaller dining room will highlight the space’s history as a first class lounge. Maria & Enzo’s Ristorante Sneak Peek ©Disney Enzo’s Hideaway Tunnel Bar Enzo discovered a secret after purchasing the closed terminal along with Maria. But the secret will be all out once guests are able to explore this network of tunnels, which formerly served as a secret speakeasy for bootleggers during the Prohibition era. Enzo’s Hideaway Tunnel Bar Sneak Peek ©Disney We can’t wait to explore Enzo’s Hideaway Tunnel Bar and the three other locations VERY soon, as they are all slated to open within the month and be fully operational in early January 2018! Earlier this year, we shared that Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort at Walt Disney World would undergo some transformations. Today we are excited to share new colorful details about those enhancements debuting late this summer! Old Port Royale at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort will be reimagined as the port of entry where guests will check in before embarking on their island vacation. This centralized location will offer resort guests more convenient access to services, amenities and dining, including an all-new Centertown Market for casual eats, an all-new Shutters restaurant offering waterfront dining adjacent to the new Banana Cabana outdoor bar and lounge, and Calypso Trading Post for shopping. Centertown Market will be expanded and enclosed, creating a quick-service restaurant with an indoor street market vibe. Guests will enter the space under a large palapa-like structure, accented with glowing colored light pendants made from glass bottles. The market will feature open shutters, wooden light posts, awnings, ornamentation and unique seating areas. Guests will also have access to the Grab n’ Go market for a specialty coffee and quick bites. Shutters, a Caribbean-inspired table-service restaurant, will be located on the waterfront of Old Port Royale, transporting guests to a beachfront home in the tropical islands. Large open shutters will allow the sun to cast a warm light into the space adorned with handmade items that appear as they’ve been found on the islands. Leaves and floral design motifs will fill the space, celebrating the natural beauty of the Caribbean. A festive poolside bar, Banana Cabana will be a great place to gather for food and drinks, immersing guests into the fun and relaxation of island life. Cabana-style drapes will flank seating areas and re-purposed steel drums will illuminate a central communal table made from a wooden boat. Forget something? No worries! With its history of being the port’s import and export facility, Calypso Trading Post will offer shoppers Disney merchandise and other vacation essentials. What changes are you most excited about? Stay tuned to the Disney Parks Blog for more details on these enhancements coming to Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort! View the full article

Returning this year to Epcot International Festival of the Holidays is the holiday kitchen of the Feast of the Three Kings! Inspired by food and drinks of the Caribbean, the kitchen pays homage to the Día de los Reyes Magos, a holiday celebrated in the Caribbean, Latin America and Spain, not only with the food but also with history, as you get to learn about the celebration itself. The Feast of the Three Kings features drinks like Coquito (with and without rum) and dishes like a roasted pork with mashed yucca and pickled green bananas, the very traditional Three Kings Bread and a shredded beef tamale with avocado crema. Here’s the recipe for the Three Kings Bread so you and your family and make it and enjoy it at home! Makes 16 DOUGH 4 eggs 1/4 cup water 1/3 cup sugar 4 tablespoons butter, at room temperature 4 tablespoons shortening 1/8 teaspoon salt Zest of 1 orange 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3- 3 1/2 cups bread flour 4 teaspoons instant yeast SUGAR PASTE 1/2 cup shortening 1/3 cup sugar 1/2 cup cake flour 1 egg GLAZE 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar 3-4 tablespoons milk 2 teaspoons vanilla extract FINISHED BREAD 1 egg 16 Maraschino cherries, chopped Red and green sugar FOR DOUGH: 1. Place the eggs and water in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a dough hook. 2. Add the sugar, butter, shortening, salt, orange zest, vanilla, and 3 cups of the bread flour to the mixing bowl. Sprinkle instant yeast on top of the flour. 3. Knead on medium speed for 12 minutes, until soft dough forms. Dough will be slightly sticky. If dough is not soft after 12 minutes, add 1/4 cup of flour at a time and knead for 1 additional minute. 4. Portion the dough into 16 balls on two baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, until doubled in size. FOR SUGAR PASTE: 1. Cream shortening, sugar, and cake flour in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. 2. Add egg and mix, making sure to scrape the sides of the bowl, until well blended. 3. Set aside. FOR GLAZE: 1. Whisk powdered sugar, 3 tablespoons of the milk, and vanilla extract together until smooth. 2. Add additional tablespoon of milk, if needed. 3. Set aside. FOR THREE KINGS BREAD: 1. Preheat oven to 325°F. 2. Beat egg and brush on top of dough. 3. Pipe the sugar paste in an “x” over the top of the balls of dough. 4. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown. 5. Cool for 15 minutes and top with glaze. 6. Sprinkle red and green sugar and chopped maraschino cherries on top of glaze. You can also find delicious food at Las Posadas holiday kitchen near Mexico. They are serving one of my favorite dishes for the holidays: Buñuelo Navideño – a thin round fried pastry, drizzled with honey and dusted with cinnamon and brown sugar. Delicioso! Epcot International Festival of the Holidays takes place until December 30. View the full article

One of the most rewarding parts of my role is meeting and learning about the inspirational people who are dedicating their lives to making the world a better place. It’s an important reminder that one person can truly make a difference. Each year, the Disney Conservation Fund (DCF) celebrates a select few of these individuals who have worked tirelessly to save wildlife, protect habitats and inspire communities to take part in conservation efforts. This year, Disney Conservation Heroes were honored for their significant strides in protecting wildlife across the globe, ranging from the ploughshare tortoise in Madagascar and pygmy hog in India, to the Tonkin snub-nosed monkeys in Vietnam and many more. Some of these Heroes focused on bettering the communities where these animals live by training locals to earn their livelihoods in new ways that are more sustainable and animal-friendly. Others removed animal snares from savannas and trained rangers to protect wildlife habitats. Others led reforestation efforts and cleaned up illegal waste dumps impacting communities and wildlife. In all cases, these Heroes dedicated countless hours in challenging conditions to make the world a better place for all of us. In addition to recognizing honorees’ dedication to engaging their communities to protect wildlife, each Hero and his or her nominating organization will share a $1,500 award from the fund. To read more and view photos of each of this year’s Conservation Heroes, visit Disney.com/conservation. View the full article

Karamell-Küche has become a destination all its own within Epcot’s Germany Pavilion. Learn About: Karamell-Küche Epcot Restaurants Disney World Restaurants And with good reason! Even among the Pavilion’s diverse offerings within Biergarten (a Table Service buffet complete with festive entertainment), Sommerfest (the Counter Service spot with NUDEL GRATINNNNN), and Bier Carts and Hovels, Karamell-Küche focuses on one thing, and one thing only: CARAMEL! From seriously addictive Caramel Corn to Caramel Bacon Squares to the ah-mazing Caramel Pecan Bar (you gotta try it!), it’s hard to take in all the different iterations of caramel treats tucked within the Caramel Kitchen’s bakery case. And speaking of different iterations… I noticed a change to one of my favorite golden treats on my last visit when I spotted a sign for the Caramel Butter Bar. It was front and center ahead of what looked suspiciously like the old Caramel Covered Shortbread — also previously known as the Chewy Caramel Bar. Caramel Butter Bar I wasn’t super concerned at first because this particular snack has been known by a few different names over the years, but basically remained a dependable combo of thick caramel poured atop and in between layers of buttery shortbread. I figured I was good to go because the “new” Caramel Butter Bar looks… virtually identical to its predecessor. See? Caramel Shortbread It was sporting less of the shortbread topping back then, but otherwise? Twinsies. So, I asked a Cast Member about the update, and she reported that there’s now a layer of caramel fudge in the middle. But if this is true, it was completely indecipherable in my Caramel Butter Bar. Caramel Fudge Center? What IS different about the Caramel Butter Bar, though, is that it’s super duper, duper, duper buttery… to the point that it was greasy. OK, listen. I am THE LAST PERSON ON THE PLANET to say that something has too much butter in it. When I go to the movies, I specifically ask them to only fill the popcorn up halfway so that I can add enough butter, shake it all down, and then add more butter. And more. So I am as astonished as you are that I’m going to say… there was too much butter. The shortbread was crumbly and clumpy, like there was too much butter mixed in and not enough sugary, bready goodness. Caramel Butter Bar The caramel is as lovely as ever, but I could do without the grease slick in my mouth. It’s still caramel and shortbread and you can’t go too terribly wrong with those components. But texturally, it was an abomination. If you give it a try, let us know what you think! After all, with the Epcot Festival of the Holidays in progress, we should all be spending a little extra time in Epcot’s Germany. Why? Because it’s home to the Caramel Kiss, of course!! According to artist Ashley Taylor, “Mickey’s Christmas Carol is one of my favorite holiday films! Pixar Play Parade returns April 13 to the Disneyland Resort – this time, at Disneyland park! Part of the limited-time Pixar Fest celebration, this delightful parade will bring even more of your favorite Pixar stories to life with the addition of three new story elements. The parade will begin as all Pixar films have, with an appearance by the iconic and adorable Pixar Lamp. Rolling ahead of the famous lamp will be the familiar yellow Pixar Ball, making a cameo in Pixar Play Parade, as it has in many Pixar films.
