Since it was first announced, we’ve been SO excited for the chance to have our first meal at Space 220! But as much as we’re looking forward to our chance to dine in space…we’re also getting more and more worried about the restaurant’s timeline. Space 220 Concept Art ©Disney The restaurant will seat guests in a space-themed dining room that offers simulated views into space! For anyone who grew up wanting to be an astronaut, Space 220 is a dream come true! Or so we hope. When details first started coming out about the new Space 220 restaurant coming to Epcot, we couldn’t wait to get that reservation into our My Disney Experience lineup! It sounds like this restaurant will offer a totally unique experience with next-level immersion. But, as time goes on…this poor project keeps taking hard knocks. Just getting off the ground has proven difficult for the restaurant, and now, in the midst of a closure with no end date in sight, we’re starting to wonder exactly when we might be able to actually dine here! The Restaurant Has Already Faced Multiple Delays When Disney announced the new space-themed restaurant in Epcot, it was scheduled to open in late 2019. Space 220 But unfortunately, the restaurant has run into some hurdles that have prevented it from being “clear for launch.” We knew things were getting dicey back in November 2019 when we found out that the previously announced Head Chef had stepped down. This was a shocking update, especially with the restaurant opening date still planned for late 2019! Space 220 VIEW! With the loss of the Head Chef and work on the restaurant still ongoing, the expected opening date for Space 220 was pushed back from the original estimate of Winter 2019 to February 2020. While there wasn’t an official announcement about the February opening, this was the estimated start date listed on job postings for the restaurant. Space 220 Restaurant Construction Even the official Disney World website still lists Space 220 as opening “Winter,” which has now passed. (Unless you mean NEXT Winter, Disney?) Not too long before the parks closed, we spied the opening listed on the Epcot guide maps as a vague “Early 2020!” Space 220 Listing February 2020 came and went without the opening of Space 220 (even though it would have been SO awesome if it had opened in 2/20…eh???) and without any official word from Disney. Disney hasn’t released a new expected opening date for Space 220, but with the news that Disney has stopped all construction during the closure, this will likely mean even further delays for the opening date of Space 220! So When Will It Open? That’s the $100,000 question, isn’t it? The Disney World parks will have to reopen or at least resume construction for the restaurant to be finished. That timeline has yet to be determined by Disney. Space 220 Construction On top of that, any new Cast Members signed on to train to work in the restaurant, including servers and chefs, will be delayed until work can resume in the park. It’s possible some that signed on will find work elsewhere in the meantime, meaning some new staff may need to be hired as well. So not only will they be waiting for the building to be finished out, but they’ll still have plenty of training to get up to speed before the doors can even open. Space 220 Restaraunt Art Print We’ve also noted pertaining to the closures that supply chains have likely been seriously disrupted by the current events. Depending on how far along the restaurant was before the closure, tables, chairs, and other necessary equipment may need to be sourced and brought in, which could take still more time. It may be a while before the food supply is steady again as well. Remember, the entirety of Disney World will have to be restocked with food, which will be a much more involved endeavor that their usual weekly or daily restocking of food spaces. Space 220 Cocktails What this all boils down to is…it may take even MORE time than we originally thought to have a chance to eat in space (and see that rotating wall of produce!). That said, we’re still super excited! We still think this experience will be worth the wait and will be a welcome table service addition to Future World. Hopefully once the parks reopen, momentum for Space 220 will kick into high gear and we’ll be making our way about the Centauri Space Station in no time! C’mon Space 220, we’re rooting for you! Between new attractions, restaurants, the Epcot Transformation, and prep for the 50th anniversary in 2021, Disney World has a ton of construction projects in the works. Cinderella Castle Construction When we first found out that Disney World was closing its gates, we wondered if Disney would use the time to make some serious progress on all of those projects. But we soon learned that wouldn’t be happening. Based on government recommendations, Disney decided to halt all construction projects. With a massive 50th Anniversary just over the horizon and several new projects announced or well underway, this is a particularly busy time for construction in Disney World. Let’s take a look at eleven major construction projects in Disney World that will be impacted by the closure. Magic Kingdom Let’s start with Magic Kingdom. There were a few major construction projects in progress before the park closure. Cinderella Castle Makeover Of course, front-and-center is the refurbishment of Cinderella Castle! ©Disney Artist Concept for New Cinderella Castle We stopped by the Magic Kingdom the day before the parks closed to check on the progress. We were already seeing a lot of the new colors come through, with the brighter blue shingles and deeper pink accents starting to emerge. Cinderella Castle Makeover Progress Even though the paint job was moving right along, the castle refurbishment was originally slated to continue through the summer of 2020. Cinderella Castle Drained Moat So, with the delays, the completion of the castle makeover may be pushed back as well. Click here to see what the castle construction looked like the day before Disney World closed! TRON: Lightcycle Run Now, here’s a project we’ve been excited about for a while! Construction on TRON: Lightcycle Run was scheduled to be finished in time for Disney World’s 50th anniversary in 2021. TRON Lightcycle Run ©Disney Again, it’s difficult to say exactly when construction can start back up on the coaster. We do know that the track was nearly done in November of 2019, so hopefully enough progress has already been made that the ride can still be opened by 2021. TRON Construction Click here to see the latest TRON construction! Epcot Epcot is where things start to get really dicey. Remember when both Toy Story Land and Galaxy’s Edge were being built in Hollywood Studios? Well, Epcot makes that construction look like a breeze! Read all about the Epcot Transformation here! Future World Overhaul A huge section of Epcot is currently under construction, with the front entrance and Future World both in the middle of a MASSIVE overhaul. When the changes are finished, Future World will be segmented into three “neighborhoods” — World Celebration, World Discovery, and World Nature. Disney hadn’t announced an expected completion date for this project, even before the park closure. Epcot World Celebration construction Now, we’re sure Disney World wanted the majority of this work done for the 50th Anniversary in 2021. But don’t forget that Epcot’s next big birthday is its 40th — coming up in 2022! Maybe Disney will postpone some of the work to complete with that projected timeline. Take a look at the vision for the Epcot transformation! Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind! On top of the general overhaul, there’s also some major attraction and dining construction going on in Future World. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is slated to open before the 50th anniversary of Disney World in 2021. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind Construction They seemed to be making some good progress on the construction prior to the closure, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed that we’ll still be able to ride this coaster (with a BACKWARDS LAUNCH and tons of other awesome imagineering!) by 2021! Here’s hoping this ride has a kickin’ soundtrack like Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: BREAKOUT! in Disneyland!! Learn more about the FIRST coaster coming to Epcot here! Space 220 Sticking in that same general area and theme, the nearby Space 220 restaurant has already missed its original opening date. At first, it was scheduled to open in Winter 2019, but after several setbacks, including a Head Chef switch-up, the restaurant still isn’t completed. We want to see what a twirling wall of space fruit looks like!!! Disney still hasn’t released a new expected opening date for the restaurant, but we’re hoping to see it open relatively quickly after the parks reopen. Space 220 Concept Art ©Disney That is, assuming their team doesn’t undergo any additional restructuring. Rotating fruit wall and Space Lounge, here we come! Click here to see EVERYTHING you need to know about Space 220 before it opens! Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure Moving over to World Showcase let’s talk Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure! This ride was scheduled to open in the summer of 2020. Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure There’s no official word from Disney on this (or any of the construction timelines), but between the scale of this project and the short amount of time until the projected opening date, we’re pretty sure this ride opening will be delayed somewhat. Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure Construction Granted, prior to closure, most of the work we saw was turning to the exterior, signaling things could possibly be father along on the inside than you might think. Click here to see what you should know before this ride opens! La Crêperie de Paris Remy won’t be the only new resident of the France Pavilion! La Crêperie de Paris, a new dining location that will offer both table-service and quick-service options, is under construction as well. Creperie Concept Art ©Disney Prior to the closure, the restaurant was scheduled to open in summer 2020. Disney hasn’t released a menu yet, but the details they have shared are enough to have us daydreaming about all of the sweet and savory treats we can’t wait to try here! Check out the details we have on Le Crêperie de Paris! Mary Poppins Attraction A “Mary Poppins themed attraction” was announced for the U.K. Pavilion at this year’s D23 event. But…we’ve seen no progress on it. Mary Poppins Attraction ©Disney Questions are still swirling if this attraction will focus on the classic tale of Mary Poppins and the Banks children, or the newer Mary Poppins Returns. No information has been released detailing the scope, timeline, or vision of this project. We haven’t forgotten about it though! The U.K. Pavilion will likely benefit greatly from it, and we’re all for this coming to fruition. But with the number of other construction projects in Epcot that are much farther along, we wouldn’t be surprised if Disney puts this one on the back burner. Here’s hoping that’s not the case! Click here to see the little we know about this attraction! Hollywood Studios Following Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opening and Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, there’s not a TON going on inside the park, construction-wise. The largest construction project at Hollywood Studios is technically…just outside of the park. Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser The Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel is another location originally scheduled to open in time for the 50th anniversary in 2021. Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Concept Art Again, no word from Disney on updated timelines as of yet. But since this is a super ambitious project involving a ton of technology and attention to detail, we wouldn’t be surprised to see a delayed opening. Here’s a look at the progress as of February 2020. Galactic Starcruiser Construction This incredibly immersive hotel promises to be a memorable experience for anyone who stays there. With so much involved, and an opening date still relatively far out, we’re hoping this makes its opening window still. Click here to see everything we know right now about the Galactic Starcruiser Star Wars Hotel! Rodeo Roundup BBQ As far as INSIDE Hollywood Studios is concerned, we’re also keeping an eye on Roundup Rodeo BBQ, the new table-service restaurant coming to Toy Story Land! Disney has described the aesthetic vision as “a kaleidoscope of toys, games, playsets,” so it sounds like guests will be in for a rootin’ tootin’ time when this location opens! The original opening date for this restaurant was relatively vague to begin with — it’s set to open “sometime in 2020.” Rodeo Roundup BBQ Concept Art ©Disney The construction walls have this one hidden pretty well, so it’s hard to tell what kind of progress has been made so far. Based on the looser opening timeline and relatively straightforward construction, it seems hopeful that this could potentially stay on track for opening this year. Roundup Rodeo Construction Click here to read more about the latest construction on Roundup Rodeo BBQ With the parks and all related construction shut down due to the current worldwide situation, there are a ton of major projects being affected. While we don’t have an official word from Disney yet on when construction will resume, we’ll be sure to keep an eye out for any updates to keep you all in the loop! Since Disneyland closed temporarily, we’ve been missing Mickey Ice Cream Bars and Hyperspace Mountain EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Disneyland Although we aren’t sure when the parks will be reopening to guests, you can still get a peek at the Happiest Place on Earth (even when there is nobody there)! Thanks to The Sun, we’re able to see some pretty eerie aerial views of the Disneyland parks! While Downtown Disney is usually a shopping and dining center hub bustling with people,… ©The Sun …the stores and restaurants have their doors closed without a person in sight. ©Jeff Gritchen This is mainly because Disneyland and Disney California Adventure won’t be opening until further notice. Although the parks originally projected to reopen at the end of the month, the closure has been extended indefinitely (and we are having SERIOUS Disney withdrawal). Disneyland Main Entrance – Closed due to Coronavirus While Disneyland has offered refunds and rescheduling availability to the guests affected by the closures, they can also take advantage of special hotel discounts if they travel from June 1st through December 31st, 2020. And, Annual Passholders will also have their passes extended according to how many days the parks are closed. When the parks were closed but Downtown Disney was open, we got a glimpse at what a guest free park looked like. Disneyland Main Entrance With the parks being closed without any Cast, Crew, or guests visiting, we are feeling a little spooked to see nobody in Disneyland (we’re ready to huuurrryyy baaack). Although the Mickey flower design has a big smile to welcome everyone, we can’t help but feel somewhat sad not knowing when we’ll be able to hop on the Matterhorn Bobsleds or see Sleeping Beauty Castle again. Disneyland Main Entrance – Closed Seriously, you guys, have you ever seen Main Street this empty?? There aren’t any Dapper Dans to harmonize with, characters to greet, or parades to watch. Wow, we never thought we’d see the day where Mickey balloons would be missing from the parks. ©The Sun And, over in Disney California Adventure, the park is just as bare without the Incredicoaster slingshotting guests on a chase after Jack Jack… ©The Sun …or the Pixar Pal-A-Round Ferris Wheel swinging guests over the water in Paradise Gardens Park. ©The Sun Since the hotels are currently closed too, the parking lots are all empty as well. Can you believe that this is the same Disneyland that had to stop selling tickets since it was so busy during the holidays?? ©The Sun After seeing these aerial shots, we miss the Disney Parks even more. With the tough decision to close Disney World and Disneyland until further notice and postpone all Disney Cruise Line sailings until after April 28th, The Walt Disney Company’s ability to generate revenue is taking a big hit right now. Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland And while Disney has promised its Cast Members paychecks until April 18th, the Walt Disney Company’s CEO Bob Chapek and former CEO Bob Iger have announced they’ll be taking a large reduction in salary. In a statement given to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney executive chairman Bob Iger is forgoing his entire salary while current Disney CEO Bob Chapek will be taking a 50% salary reduction. Bob Iger Other Disney executives would be receiving a reduction to their salaries as a direct result of these difficult times. Chapek stated, “effective April 5, all VPs will have their salaries reduced by 20 percent, SVPs by 25 percent, and EVPs and above by 30 percent.” In recent days, we’ve seen other chief executives at other large companies start implementing these pay cuts such as Marriott’s CEO last week. Bob Chapek ©Disney It has been estimated that Iger is among the entertainment and media industry’s best-paid executives with annual earnings ranging from $47.5 and $65.6 million during his time as Disney’s chairman and CEO. Chapek earns a base CEO salary of $2.5 million, with an annual target bonus of $7.5 million, and an annual long-term incentive grant of $15 million. At this time it isn’t clear whether the 50% reduction will apply to compensation package or just his base salary. As many of you already know, our hospitals are facing critical supply shortages, especially in parts of the country that are being hit the hardest. Ponchos and Umbrellas Sign at Disney World One of these places is New York City and recently one of our DFB readers reached out to us on behalf of the medical workers in her community who are risking their lives right now to save others. NYC hospitals really need our help right now, especially Montefiore’s medical staff. These guys are working on the frontlines and are running out of PPE (personal protective equipment). They are in desperate need of equipment they can use to shield themselves while carrying out their jobs. That’s why they’re asking for any and all items from this list below — even if they aren’t medical-grade. You may not have any masks or latex gloves laying around, but we know you have some plastic rain ponchos you might have bought for an upcoming Disney trip hiding in your coat closets! Or maybe you bought some and never used them! While you probably wouldn’t expect these cheap pieces of plastic to save lives, not all heroes wear capes — some wear plastic rain ponchos! Medical workers can use them as a substitute for the disposable protective gowns they normally wear. Poncho Set If you wish to donate ANY of these materials (including plastic rain ponchos!) to Monteifoire’s Medical Care Team, here’s where you can ship them: And if you’re looking for even more ways to help hospital workers in NYC or your community, you make your own face masks at home! According to the New York Post, Jo-ann craft stores are giving away free kits which include all the materials you need to make them. They’re doing curbside pick-up and they’ll even donate the masks to hospitals for you. Join us in the fight to keep our heroes out there safe! These are difficult times for all, but there are still many ways to help from home! Related posts: DFB Video: Latest Disney News!! News! It’s hard to find a bright side to Disney World being temporarily closed. Magic Kingdom But shockingly, it’s actually not totally impossible. Now that everyone and everything is slowing down around us, we thought we’d take a moment to figure out some of the good stuff that might actually come from this whole experience when Disney World reopens! Disney World Will Be Better Prepared…For Anything Disney World has only had to unexpectedly close a handful of times in history since it opened in 1971. Should something like this ever happen again, Disney is going to have a much better plan in place for how to handle it next time. Don’t get us wrong — so far they’ve been doing an excellent job, but let’s be honest — like every one of us, they’ve been flying by the seat of their pants during these unprecedented times. Crystal Palace Disney World already has a hurricane policy in place and has trained their staff well in case of these weather-related emergencies. But it seems obvious to us now that Disney will be using this as a time of learning, hopefully putting forth some new procedures should something outside of their control force the parks to close again. Cleaner Parks Disney World has always been fastidious at taking care of its parks. Seriously they’re the cleanest theme parks in the world. There’s rarely even a frond out of place on their palm trees. From the custodial Cast Members who are always making magic to the workers who touch-up the attractions with fresh coats of paint after the parks close for the night, Disney World is always looking its best. Aloha Isle Refreshments But as we all know by now, while something might look clean, that it doesn’t actually mean it IS clean. Once Disney World went on high-alert, they began cleaning their already immaculate-looking parks even more carefully. They began wiping down shared surfaces in between guests and enacted even more rigorous sanitation practices. When the parks reopen someday, we can hope to see many of these new, more thorough cleaning procedures still in place meaning microscopically cleaner rides, restaurants, and maybe even restrooms for all of us. More Ways to Stay Sanitary Before Disney World’s sudden closure, several hand sanitizing locations were added throughout the parks, and portable hand-washing stations were out for guests. A new feature on the My Disney Experience app even located the nearest place for guests to sanitize their hands with turn-by-turn directions. hand-washing stations in parks We would love to see many of these temporary hand-washing stations stay in place and maybe even become permanent. Yes, we can always scrub up in the restrooms placed liberally around the parks, but we don’t always remember to do so regularly. With washing stations placed right in your path, it can be easier to remember to keep your germs to yourself…and banish them altogether. No More Communal Cutlery! And speaking of restaurants, grabbing our flatware from a big communal pile of silverware has always made our stomachs turn a little! We’re certainly not condoning the use of disposable plastic cutlery, but there’s got to be a better way! Communal Spoons at Disney World Some of us have started to carry our own tupperware cutlery around the Epcot Festivals…and hey, we wouldn’t even mind carrying our Spike the Bee spork from Epcot’s Flower and Garden Festival around with us all the time at Disney World — it gets the job of eatin’ stuff done rather nicely! But due to increased health and safety concerns over the practice of communal flatware, we’d be happy to see this longtime Disney habit go. Maybe flatware can be rolled as it is at most table service restaurants? More Self-Awareness It would be great if having this time to reflect would make us all kinder, happier people. While we’re fairly certain the parks will be crowded when they reopen, wouldn’t it be awesome if we could all be a little more self-aware! Fireworks Crowds Instead of stampeding each other after the fireworks show or squeezing into someone’s personal space at the last minute to see the parade, how about we all agree to give each other some breathing room when we all get back together in our happy place again? Better Perspective And since we’ll all be back at Disney World again someday, maybe you’ve acquired a new perspective on things. Cinderella Castle Refurb Matters that seemed really important at the time like “Will those ugly orange cranes ruin my castle pics?” might sound really trivial right now. We actually wouldn’t mind seeing those construction cherry-pickers right now if it meant we got to see Cinderella Castle as well! What do you think, are we being waaaay too optimistic? Maybe. But if you look at things from this every-gray-cloud-has-a-silver-lining perspective, Disney World is going to be even better than it was before. What good things do you think might come out of Disney World’s temporary closure? Share your ideas with us in the comments below! Related posts: BREAKING NEWS! On March 27th, both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort announced extensions to their temporary closures “until further notice” in light of the current global situation. Disneyland Paris And now, according to an update to the Disneyland Paris website, it appears that Disneyland Paris is following suit. Previously, the website stated that Disneyland Paris parks and hotels would be closed until the end of March. The update to the website, dated March 30, 2020, now states that “Disneyland Paris will remain closed until further notice. We look forward to welcoming guests to our resort again once it is advisable to do so.” Disneyland Paris website screenshot The site also includes information for guests whose travel plans have been affected. While we are providing a screenshot below regarding the Resort’s temporary adjustments to booking and cancellation policies, guests may visit the website to access a list of answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Tickets (including Annual Passes), FastPass, the Buffalo Bill Wild West show, and more. Disneyland Paris website screenshot Note that, per the policies above, “If you hold a reservation for a Disneyland Paris holiday for arrivals while our Parks are closed, you are entitled to receive a voucher valid for 18 months for the full amount of payment already made for your booking. New bookings will be subject to conditions available at the time of booking. If you wish to maintain your current booking conditions, you can benefit from our rebooking offer: If you hold a booking with an arrival up to June 30th, 2020, you have the possibility to rebook at the same price until May 15th, 2020 for an arrival before October 1st, 2020.” Disneyland Paris reminds that this decision was made with the safety of the Resort’s guests and cast members as the top priority. Disneyland Paris website We will continue to keep you posted on the closures and future re-openings of Disney Parks around the world.
