Ever since the parks first closed, we have been trying to imagine the impact the closures will have on a powerhouse like Disney. Cinderella Castle and Main Street USA in Disney World We’ve seen execs taking pay cuts, Cast Members being furloughed, the company taking on new debt, and even purchasing a new parcel of land. To those of us on the outside, it appears as though Disney has been thoughtfully planning their moves not only to protect themselves financially but to ensure a future for the parks we love. Former Disney CEO, Bob Iger, spoke to how the latest events have impacted the company’s vision moving forward in a recent interview with Barron’s. Although Iger stated that the recent events are “obviously the biggest interruption [they’ve] faced,” he also noted that they are a team of both optimists and realists. They are holding on to the hope that this situation will eventually end and Disney will still have something for people to enjoy and appreciate, maybe “more than they ever have.” Let’s take a closer look at Iger’s thoughts on how this is affecting a few key elements of the Walt Disney Company. Disney’s Financial Future When speaking of the company’s financial future, Iger stated they “have access to capital that will keep [them] more than solvent through a prolonged period.” Bob Iger presenting a model of Shanghai Disneyland He referred to the furloughs being necessary to reduce costs for the company, but that they began cutting costs at the senior executive level first to send the message — presumably that the cuts were a company-wide investment in the future. He noted the impact to employees in stating “others obviously will feel the impact as well as we look to preserve the long-term health of the company financially.” © Disney Their latest decisions to proceed with the furloughs may leave lasting effects on their employees. But Iger states they were ultimately made for the company’s long-term preservation. The Future of Disney Parks In light of staying optimistic, Disney is already looking to determine their new normal once the parks reopen. Iger believes that to get back to pre-closure park attendance, “people will have to feel comfortable that they’re safe.” Pluto and Goofy in the Parade in Shanghai Disneyland With the future being unknown, he stated that this security could come in the form of a vaccine. But without one, it would mean “more scrutiny, more restrictions.” Disney has been closely monitoring China’s approach and how additional precautions have almost become an expectation. Stroller Size Check This process is informing Disney’s plans for the future as they “prepare for a world where [their] customers demand that [they] scrutinize everybody.” He predicts that customers may welcome this scrutiny even if it leads to “hardships” like taking longer to get inside the park. Magic Kingdom starts donning its Christmas Attire While Disney has consistently strived for guest safety as a top priority, this voluntary departure from efficiency could have lasting impacts on the future of the parks. Similar to how the attacks on September 11th, 2001 brought about long-standing security changes, Disney is forced to navigate another unprecedented situation that threatens guest safety and peace of mind. Click here to see more ways the Disney Parks could possibly be different The Future of Disney Media We’ve seen movies like Onward and Frozen 2 released on Disney+ long before we expected and, according to Iger, before Disney had originally planned to release them. ©Disney He also stated there’s a chance more Disney films like these could be making their way to Disney+ prematurely, but that their bigger films (which he referred to as “tentpoles”) will most likely be rescheduled to later dates in the theaters (as we recently saw with Mulan). @Walt Disney Studios These media moves could be Disney cutting their losses on films they expected a smaller return on (like Artemis Fowl), while still fighting for larger return on highly promoted movies like Black Widow and Jungle Cruise. Iger shared the current plan for larger movies is to “simply wait for slots” in the calendar, even though pushing all of these films back still leaves a large gap in movie releases and production for Disney’s media sector. ©Disney Disney hasn’t faced worldwide shut-downs like this before, so they are having to experiment with how long they can hold viewers’ anticipation for a film that has seen drastic delays — all while millions of dollars hang in the balance. Click here to see more of the delayed release dates for Disney films How Disney Moves Forward Although Iger remains hopeful that Disney and its parks will still offer magical content and experiences following this crisis, he admitted: ““I don’t think we’re ever going to see a return to business as usual… .” However, he meant this in the sense that it is difficult to walk through a trial like this and forget what happened or avoid being refined in the process. Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland He offered hope for the future by stating: “Disney will take this opportunity to look for ways to run our businesses more efficiently when we come back.” Nothing like a global crisis to find the weak spots in your business model, right? As Iger spoke about the plan for resuming normal operations, he listed two main goals. First, Disney plans to brainstorm what they need to address to make people feel safe. And second, they need to figure out how to run the company “more efficiently, given what [they] believe business conditions will dictate.” Disney will have to think ahead to not only how their business will look after weathering the storm, but what consumer mindsets will be after experiencing these events. According to Iger, Disney will continue to strive to remain optimistic about the future because their employees believe in the business and in the brand. They have had to make difficult financial decisions to protect the future of the company, even though they understand the impact these calls have on their people. But with preservation as the name of the game, Iger and his team have their sights set on creating a park environment where people feel safe, even if that means possible sacrifices. Iger acknowledges a large part of this will be reevaluating the company as a whole and carving out a place among the top priorities to anticipate the effects these events will have on Disney’s future guests. You can read more about the safety measures Iger mentioned we may see in the parks HERE! How do you think the closures will affect Disney’s vision moving forward? Let us know in the comments! Disney Chairman Bob Iger recently expressed his expectations for reopened Disney parks, spurring Wall Street to make their own predictions. Disneyland Main Entrance With the Disney parks currently closed, executives and analysts are looking to the potentially very different future of the parks. Even as Iger began to suggest measures that could be taken to make guests feel safe, Wells Fargo analysts are predicting that the Disney parks may not return to their pre-closure attendance levels for two years. According to Variety, Wells Fargo downgraded Disney’s stock as analysts noted that the parks could take 24 months to normalize. Analyst Steven Cahill believes that Disney parks will not fully be able to recover until testing and vaccines for the current health crisis are made easily accessible. Cinderella Castle Cahill predicts “zero park attendance” for the back half of fiscal 2020. Disney’s fiscal year ends around September, which means that analysts are predicting that closures could last until then. Beyond that, the forecast shows that the parks will operate with only 50% capacity (whether due to safety measures or a drop in demand) all the way through fiscal 2021. An Empty BoardWalk Resort Analysts say that the factors that are likely to improve the feelings of safety around going to Disney World include the parks significantly limiting capacity, the proliferation of a vaccine, or more testing so those with immunity and antibodies feel comfortable. We Asked Our Readers When They’d Feel Comfortable Going Back To Disney World. Click Here To See What They Said. Disney California Adventure Main Entrance – Closed due to Coronavirus Cahill acknowledges that the healthcare community is hard at work, but that a vaccine may not be widely-distributed in the next 12 months. “As such,” he says, “our attendance forecasts are a best guess with a precipitous decline followed by a ~12-month recovery.” This period of recovery explains the two-year prediction. Sleeping Beauty Castle It remains to be seen how Disney will handle the reopenings and when reopenings will be possible. For now, the “unique and severe” downturn for the Disney parks financially is the norm, and Disney stock may see consequences. As many of you already know, it isn’t just Disney’s theme parks, hotels, cruise ships and film industries that are taking a big hit with this current situation. Dinsey also has a large presence on Broadway with three musicals including The Lion King, Aladdin, and Frozen, as well as a large number of touring stage show productions. ©Disney’s Hit Broadway Musicals Aladdin, Frozen, and The Lion King And while all Broadway performances gave their final curtain call on March 12th, the temporary closure was only set to remain in effect until April 12th. Now, the reopening of Broadway has just been pushed back. Over the last few weeks, New York has become our country’s biggest hot zone and as a result, Governor Andrew Cuomo has issued a state-wide stay at home order which will be in effect until April 29th. ©Disney Aladdin The Hit Broadway Musical The Broadway League has recently announced that all productions will now stay on hold until June 7th. The announcement is so new that we aren’t seeing this information reflected on all show ticket websites yet, but will most likely be updated soon. Meanwhile, New York’s other venues including The Met, Carnegie Hall, and the New York Philharmonic have also extended their closures. “It would be irresponsible to continue having performances when clearly what is being called for is social distancing,” Peter Gelb, the general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, told the New York Times. ©Disney The Lion King If you wish to help actors through this difficult time, please consider making a donation to Broadway Cares. They’ve set up an Emergency Assistance Program to help actors covering the cost of housing and food while they’re unable to perform. And on April 13th, Broadway Cares will be live-streaming a Disney on Broadway production at 7 PM Eastern to raise money for actors! We will continue to keep you updated on this situation. With the world in a global health crisis, there are a lot of questions about when it will peak in different areas. Cinderella Castle Disney World is closed, so potential travelers are looking for insights into when their vacations can move forward. One of these insights is when the curve will start to flatten in Florida. Case numbers continue to increase, but there’s a slight difference to the original predictions. Case numbers were expected to peak on May 3rd by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IMHE) at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Now, the predicted peak is earlier — April 23rd. According to the Orlando Sentinel, the projections show that peak will see a median of 242 deaths and need for upwards of 2,000 ventilators and 2,500 ICU beds. Currently, Florida’s healthcare system is around 800 beds short to handle the peak numbers; ICU beds could be full by April 14th. ©IMHE The good news from the new data is that the state should have enough hospital beds overall. The total number of fatalities in Florida has also been predicted as 170 fewer than originally calculated. ©IMHE Florida’s peak is set to closely follow the projected peak for the country on April 15th. The IHME has modeled this data on observed death rates and the effectiveness and implementation of preventative measures. Of course, concern about the peak of the crisis is strong for officials in Florida. Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said, “We are just hoping that many of the provisions that are being put in place now will minimize the whip of that peak or surge within our communities.” He also spoke to the bright side of seeing an earlier peak saying, “If the 21st is the date we will peak, perhaps in some ways the sooner we peak, the sooner we can begin to recover.” ©IMHE Now, these models could change. It’s possible that the peak will be a little bit earlier or a little bit later than April 23rd. Other countries around the world have even seen multiple peaks, so a decline in viruses does not mean that we can drop all preventative measures. It will take some time for the crisis to decline enough for us to see a state of normalcy again. Continue following along with DFB to learn how this situation is affecting Disney World. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on the path of the crisis as best we can. In the meantime, stay safe. Click here to learn more about how Disney World could be affected by the global health crisis.
