  3. Florida is currently in Phase One of the state’s reopening. As we have been following the discussions of the Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force (as Orange County is home to many Orlando area attractions), a recent discussion point has revolved around potential differences for safely reopening smaller attractions versus the larger venues such as Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, and SeaWorld (all of which remain closed until further notice). Universal Orlando Resort Smaller venues include locations like Gatorland and Fun Spot America, and they operate on a different scale than the major theme parks. And now, as the state looks towards moving into Phase Two of reopening, some of the smaller attractions are hoping to be permitted to reopen in the next phase. According to News 6 (clickorlando.com), locations including Gatorland, Fun Spot America, and Icon Park submitted letters to Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings requesting to be included in Phase Two of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s reopening plan. CDC guidelines for guests and procedure manuals were included with the requests. Florida-themed Orange Bird Mural in Disney Springs In fact, Gatorland Orlando has already begun setting up safety measures within the park including distancing place holders positioned 6 feet apart on the ground and signs to notify guests of new restrictions. Mike Hileman of Gatorland Orlando stated that over 50 hand wash stations have been added among other measures. He also noted that “the fact that we are open-air I think changes the ball game for us.” Fun Spot America submitted a statement to News 6 which, in part, reads that Fun Spot America “continues to do their part with a legacy of providing Safe, Clean, Fun for over 22 years and now even more with the addition of new staff positions working in Clean Teams to strictly focus on wiping down all railing, surfaces and high touch areas regularly.” Hand sanitizer station in Disney World Vice President of Marketing John Chidester also noted that hand sanitizer stations around the park will “remind guests to do their part,” and that outdoor seating and queue reconfiguration will promote distancing. Though the lower reopening capacity levels have not yet been set, staff temperature checks will be taken prior to shifts. Neither the parameters nor a timeline have yet been revealed for Phase Two of the reopening of Florida, but we’ll continue to keep you posted as this story develops. 7. Can you believe we just celebrated 22 years of Animal Kingdom making magic on April 22nd? DinoLand USA While we took you on a stroll down memory lane to celebrate, there are just so many cool details in Animal Kingdom that really help make the park one of Disney’s most immersive. And, although you might love traveling to Asia or hopping on the back of a Banshee on Flight of Passage, there are A LOT of hidden gems you DIDN’T know about tucked away in Animal Kingdom! We’re going to show you a few hidden details and tell you some AWESOME stories you may not know! Disco Yeti This is one of our favorite parts of Animal Kingdom so get ready for a wild ride! Back when Expedition Everest was built, the Yeti was a one-of-a-kind audio-animatronic that had never been done before. In case you never got the chance to experience it (don’t worry — not many did!), the Yeti actually used to swipe down at guests as they passed underneath him on the ride (ooh, scary!). Although this was CRAZY cool, there were a few major problems in store for the attraction. Expedition Everest When it was built, the Yeti animatronic made up a key structural component of the ride. Sooo, what does that mean?? Well, the more the Yeti tried to swoop at guests, the more Everest’s frame would shake. Eventually, the framework started to break apart because of this, which could have spelled disaster for the whole mountain if the yeti was left operational. ©D23 So, the Yeti was turned off from action mode or “A mode” to a restful state in “B mode.” But here’s where the Disco part comes in! To give the illusion that he is moving, strobe lights were added to the ride, so fans have lovingly dubbed him “Disco Yeti.” Although it’s been YEARS since the Yeti has been in action, it’s not likely we’ll see a fix anytime soon. When asked if the Yeti would be repaired during the Disney World closure, Joe Rohde, one of the creative minds behind the attraction, simply responded, “No.” Expedition Everest It would take some pretty intense construction since Expedition Everest would literally have to be taken apart to rework the framework and change how Disco Yeti operates. While it doesn’t look likely we’ll see Yeti swingin’ anytime soon, it’s possible that one day the repairs could be made. Road Less Traveled The Asia section of the park takes you on a visual journey when you’re walking through the area but you have to look down to see it! You’ll find bike tracks embedded into the concrete where villagers have traveled through the mountains. BUT, the cool part is that you can also spot the transition from bike tracks to footprints once you get closer to Expedition Everest. Asia Sign This is supposed to represent that the terrain got too difficult to take bikes in, so visitors had to walk on foot to be able to see Expedition Everest in all its glory. Wow, Imagineers really do think of everything, don’t they?? Special Guest on the Tree of Life The Tree of Life features over 300 hand-sculpted animals in the base of the trunk. While you’re trying to spot as many as you can, you might be able to spot a famous little chimpanzee in the tree carvings by the name of David Greybeard. If you’re not familiar, he was one of Primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall’s favorite chimps she studied over the years. Animal Kingdom’s Tree of Life Goodall had some input in the creation of Animal Kingdom, so this was a special nod to her and her work. She has even continued being a part of Animal Kingdom since its park opening by speaking at the 10-year anniversary alongside Joe Rohde! Flaska Reclinata When you first enter Pandora, it might be easy to get pretty blown away by all the amazing details of the Valley of Mo’ara (umm, giant floating rocks, you guys!!). BUT, before you enter the area, you might spot a MASSIVE plant that honestly just looks awesome. Since the Na’vi have a very strong connection with nature in Avatar, the Imagineers thought it was important for guests to be able to fully immerse themselves in the land. Flaska Reclinata ©Disney So, before you walk past this plant or just take a quick photo, you can actually connect with the Flaska Reclinata like the Na’vi! All you have to do is place your hand in the center (pinkish blobby-looking) part of the plant, and it will respond to your touch by glowing from within, spraying water, and making noise! This is an especially fun way to get your kids excited about entering Pandora (even when it’s early in the morning and you’re rushing to get on Flight of Passage ). Flight of Passage Handprints Speaking of Flight of Passage… After you’ve had an AMAZING time soaring around Pandora on a “living, breathing” Banshee, you can spot some homage to the ride’s creators! As you exit the ride on the lowest level corridor, there are three handprints and initials on the walls belonging to James Cameron (Avatar’s director), Joe Rohde (Pandora’s lead designer), and John Lando (Avatar’s executive producer). Flight of Passage Creators’ Handprints We can’t blame them for wanting to leave their mark on the most popular ride in Animal Kingdom!! Shrine to the Yeti On the bridge across from Animal Kingdom, you can get a great view of Expedition Everest and some epic PhotoPass shots of the whole fam. But, what you might not notice is that unique structure sitting there is actually a shrine to the Yeti built by the “villagers” in the shape of the mountain! Temple Shrine You can find different offerings like beads, goblets, and fruit placed all around the shrine. It’s too bad that Disco Yeti doesn’t seem to appreciate the sweet gesture. You Won’t Find a T-Rex in the Dinosaur Ride! Since there is a VERY big franchise right down the road housed at Universal Studios (cue the Jurassic Park theme), Disney wanted to separate themselves from those movies when they built Dinosaur, which was originally called Countdown to Extinction. So, instead of a familiar T-Rex chasing after you, guests have to avoid the Carnotaurus during their search for the Iguanodon. Dinosaur This big baddie might look similar to a T-Rex, but this real-life dino actually has horns on its head that were used to head-butt enemies. It may be smaller than the T-Rex, but it was still a distant relative of the famous dino (we can only imagine how scary those family gatherings are!). Dinosaurs Eat Ketchup?? While you’re about to board Dinosaur and go on a blast to the past, be sure to look up in the loading dock of the ride. You can spot yellow, red, and white pipes with chemical formulas written on them — but, these aren’t any regular ol’ formulas! McDonald’s used to sponsor Dinosaur (weird flex, but okay) so the pipes actually have the formulas for ketchup, mustard, and mayo! ©Photo used with permission; Courtesy of AllEars.net Do you think they’re nice enough to send some of those condiments over to Pizzafari and Restaurantosaurus? Interact with Kali River Rapids While Animal Kingdom’s water ride is a GREAT way to cool off on a hot Florida day, did you know that you can actually interact with the attraction? If you stand on the bridge overlooking the portion of Kali River Rapids surrounded by elephant statues, you’ll find buttons that spray water out of the elephants’ trunk onto the guests on the attraction. Kali River Rapids It’s a fun little surprise for anybody riding (and a last attempt to get everyone soaked!). Beastly Kingdom When Animal Kingdom was being dreamed up, Imagineers planned to create a Beastly Kingdom, which would have been a section dedicated to mythical creatures (we’re talkin’ dragons, unicorns, and anything else you can dream up!). There would have a good side and a bad side to the land with the magical Fantasia Gardens and wicked Dragon’s Tower. ©Disney However, due to budget problems, Beastly Kingdom was put on the back burner. Instead, Camp Minnie-Mickey was placed as a “temporary” spot that ended up making a permanent home in the park until Pandora and the world of Avatar took up residence in the location. Yet, there are still bits and pieces of Beastly Kingdom throughout Animal Kingdom! ©Disney You can find hidden dragon statues and dragons on different signs, benches, and light fixtures, especially at the entrance to the park! The parking lot also used to have a “Unicorn” section, but it was changed to Butterfly recently to fit better with the current Animal Kingdom theme. Joe Rohde Masks On the backside of the popular character meal, Tusker House, located in the Africa section of the park, you can spot a few masks on the wall that have a lot of cool shapes, colors, and designs. If you look closely, you can spot a small sign underneath them that says “Jorodi Masks and Beads” as a little reference to the Imagineer who helped make Animal Kingdom the amazing park it is today! Tusker House Outdoor Theming Hmm, which mask do you think would look the best on us?? Specialty Beers ONLY Available in Animal Kingdom We’re BIG fans of all the tasty sips you can get throughout the park when you’re visiting (Dawa Bar is where it’s at, folks). But you might not realize Animal Kingdom has a bit of a specialty when it comes to beers since there are brews that you can ONLY get in the park and nowhere else in the world! You can find the exclusive Kungaloosh Spiced Excursion Ale at Thirsty River Bar and Trek Snacks or the Nomad Lounge, and the GREEN Hawkes’ Grog Ale at Satu’li Canteen or Pongu Pongu in Pandora. Hawkes’ Grog GREEN-COLORED Ale Anyone else want to go on a little Happy Hour hop with us to get these when the parks reopen?? We never fail to be blown away by all the incredible details in Animal Kingdom. And, this list doesn’t even scratch the surface!! When you head back to this jungle of a park, let us know how many of these hidden places and awesome items you find while you’re there. Want to learn EVEN MORE? Check out our video below! 8. Much of Florida has been in Phase One of the reopening of the state’s economy as of May 4th. However, when Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that Florida would begin reopening — which includes businesses such as retail stores and restaurants — three counties that have been most impacted by the current health situation were excluded from the reopening. Florida-themed Orange Bird Mural in Disney Springs These three counties were Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties. However, at a press conference today Governor DeSantis has announced that Miami-Dade and Broward can now join the rest of the state in Phase One. Per an executive order, both counties may begin reopening on May 18th. While beaches will remain closed until May 26th at the earliest, other establishments including bars, movie theaters, and more will remain closed. Stores and restaurants may operate in limited capacity. Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill You can read more about Phase One for Florida’s reopening here. 17. Recently, Disneyland and Disney World shared that they would not be accepting new bookings until July. Since then, Disney World’s Senior VP has clarified that reservation availability does not indicate park reopening. Cinderella Castle And while we recently reported guests with Disney World and Disneyland Resort with hotel reservations through the end of May were being notified that their bookings had been canceled, now Disney is reaching out to notify guests that their early June reservations are being canceled as well. Disney is currently sending out messages to guests with arrival dates in early June with instructions to “modify or cancel their Disney Resort hotel reservations or Walt Disney Travel Company packages.” We received notification this morning regarding a Disney World reservation we had booked with an arrival date June 1st. Disney has typically been canceling reservations on a week-to-week basis. ©Disney Disney is waiving all cancellation and re-booking fees for guests affected by the closures. But if guests choose to not take action, Disney will automatically cancel and refund any hotel bookings. Disney’s BoardWalk For assistance with your booking, you can contact Disney’s Customer Support at (407) 934-7639. 19. For many of us, it was love first sight the inaugural time we gazed into eyes of Baby Yoda on Disney+’s The Mandalorian! ©Disney And it seems not even a global pandemic could extinguish the flame that burns brightly in our hearts for this little guy! Baby Yoda merchandise is still coming out of the woodwork everywhere you turn and people are still ALL ABOUT it! While there have been plenty of Baby Yoda toys, apparel, and electronics, some of the items have been a bit more (how should we put this?) interesting. So interesting in fact, we’re really happy some of these Baby Yoda products didn’t see the light of day! (We hope we’re not bursting your bubble here, but these are [hopefully obviously!] NOT real products. Sorry guys! ) Baby Yoda Hand Vac We’re already having a hard time dealing with our obsessive desire to spot clean every surface around us right now. A Baby Yoda Hand Vac (while quite handy and adorable to look at) would definitely feed into our deep need for keeping things in order right now, and we’re not talking about the First Order! The Force is Strong With This Hand Vac I don’t know, maybe a Baby Yoda Hand Vac WOULD be helpful to have handy, especially because we could suck all the dog hair off our shirts before our Zoom meetings and look half-way presentable for once! Baby Yoda Litter Box Why should humans have all the fun? Animals love sweet Baby Yodes, too! That’s why we’re giving Mittens a Baby Yoda Litter Box for her next birthday! Baby Yoda is Watching Your Kitty! Of course, cats might naturally object to using a litter box that’s levitating four feet off the ground like Baby Yoda’s floating space egg pod! We may have to ensure ours stays firmly planted on the ground!! Baby Yoda Tweezers Trying out a new eyebrow shape has occurred to us several times now that we haven’t plucked for months! Pluck, Pluck BB Yodes! But a pair Baby Yoda Tweezers might prove to be too distracting! We’d be going for a shape like Rey’s brows and end up with something more like Jabba the Hutt’s! Baby Yoda Weed Wacker When it’s time to trim those Galaxy’s edges (of your driveway), we know the perfect tool to get the job done! We Doubt We’ll See This in Our Home Depot Anytime Soon! A Baby Yoda Weed Wacker would sure improve our feelings about yard work in general, but we’re thinking our love of Baby Yoda really applies more to indoor items. Baby Yoda Hair Dye Actually, we kinda wish we had some Baby Yoda Hair Dye right now to cover up some of these roots! Baby Yoda Knows How to Get Bounce AND Shine in His Locks! Our Dark Side is starting to show, and it doesn’t look PRETTY! Baby Yoda Jock Jams CD What better way to get jazzed about another long day of being trapped at home than with the new As-NEVER-Seen-on TV Baby Yoda Jock Jams CD?! We Feel Transported to the 90s Just Looking at This! Get yourself JUICED with title tracks including Batuusie Roll, Gonna Make You Use The Force, and Whoomp! There the Remote Is! Baby Yoda Troll Doll And finally, in an abomination of Baby Yoda items we’re relieved to see X-ed, we give you, the Baby Yoda Troll Doll. Don’t Rub the Gem on His Belly. Just Don’t. Eessh…that’s a tough pill to swallow! We think we’ll just leave Trolls to Universal instead! You see? Baby Yoda plush and t-shirts seem much more approachable than lawn care products, don’t they?! We’ll keep an eye out for the next wacky “Child” merch to hit the shelves, but until then, we’re gonna go pop on our pretend Baby Yoda edition JockJams in our heads and do some yard work! Do you wish any of these Baby Yoda products actually DID make the cut? Tell us which ones you would’ve bought in the comments below! Related posts: Baby Yoda Plush IS HERE! ACT FAST! 20. Mulan may have been delayed until July 24th, but we’re still just as excited to see our favorite warrior princess do her thing on the big screen! ©Disney The live-action remake of Mulan has brought some seriously cool merch into our lives. We’re particularly fond of this super cool Mulan hat and these gorgeous Mulan shirts. Today, we spotted a new Mulan accessory — and it might be the best one yet. Check out this new Mulan Comb Handbag from Loungefly! This gorgeous handbag is a super understated and classic accessory with clean, structured lines, and simple colors. We love the design of the handle, the removable green strap, and the lucky cricket cage motif! ©Boxlunch Scrawled on the back of the bag in gold handwriting is a powerful message from the film, “A flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful at all.” Ahh, words of wisdom! ©Boxlunch We’re also pretty taken away by the print used on the inside of the bag. You’ll see traditional Chinese motifs like bamboo as well as icons from the film. Can you spot the Mulan comb? ©Boxlunch Click here to make the Mulan Comb Loungefly Handbag yours! 24. Morimoto Asia serves up the cuisine of Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto to guests in Disney Springs. While the location was the first to focus on Pan-Asian cuisine, it was not, of course, Chef Morimoto’s first restaurant venture. Morimoto Asia However, after almost 15 years, Morimoto in New York City has — as Chef Morimoto shared on his Instagram — served its final meal. In his post, Chef Morimoto states that originally they had hoped to host a series of farewell events (this closure was not unexpected, as the lease for the location was set to expire). But in light of the current global situation those events, unfortunately, cannot take place. ©Chef Morimoto @chef_morimoto on Instagram A quote from the Chef’s Instagram post: “When Stephen Starr and I opened Morimoto in 2006, it was one of the most exciting days of my career as I had long dreamed about having a restaurant in New York City. The restaurant was unlike anything in New York at the time, from the unique James Beard-award winning design to the exciting food we were creating daily. It was a very special place and I want to thank all of our staff and each of our guests who brought the restaurant to life, with a special thank you to Stephen and his team, for the partnership.” Morimoto Asia will reopen on May 22nd, joining other locations in Disney Springs when the shopping and dining district begins its phased reopening on May 20th. Peking Duck at Morimoto Asia The original Morimoto in Philadelphia remains in operation, as does the Chef’s “casual concept” eatery in midtown New York, Momosan Ramen & Sake. Chef Morimoto also shares: “We are also planning on further New York openings sometime in the future, so stay tuned!” As we “stay tuned” for more when Morimoto Asia reopens its door in Disney Springs on May 22nd, you may also keep posted on the current status of Disney destinations around the world by visiting any of the links below.
