  3. Florida has been in a Phase One of reopening since May 4th, and now it seems they’re taking the next step. Liberty Belle Riverboat at Magic Kingdom In a press conference today, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis explained the intention for the state to move to a “Full Phase One” on Monday. The new order loosens limitations on restaurants, gyms, and sports venues — but what does it mean for Orlando theme parks like Disney World? The first thing to note is that the new order does NOT allow theme parks to open. However, DeSantis did directly address the next steps for theme parks in a call for them to submit detailed plans to the state about safety procedures and what day they are certain they can reopen safely and responsibly. Monorail at Disney World He also noted, since these parks have such a large effect on their surrounding communities, that theme parks should work alongside their local governments on their plans for reopening and that local government officials will need to endorse any potential plans. Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom Disney and Universal have already released a few of their reopening plans. Now, they will submit even more details to the governor. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all Florida policies that could have an effect on Disney World! Click here to learn more about what’s included in Florida’s Full Phase One. 6. Earlier this week we shared the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida was preparing to host a major national sporting event next month. ©InternationalDrive.com 30,000 participants were expected to attend the 47th AAU Junior National Volleyball Championships on June 16th. But as first reported by the Orlando Sentinel, the Amateur Athletic Union has now decided today to reschedule its championships to July 14th. The 12-day junior volleyball championships would have been the first major sporting event held at the convention center since March, bringing athletes and their fans together from all across the country. “Upon further conversation, and taking into consideration the ongoing findings of the Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force, the Orange County Convention Center and the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States Inc. have mutually postponed the 47th AAU Junior National Volleyball Championships to a later date,” a statement released by the volleyball officials read. Disney’s All-Star Resort “Our goal has always been to host the AAU Junior National Volleyball Championships when, and where, it was deemed safe to do so and with all necessary containment and mitigation measures in place,” Roger Goudy, AAU president and CEO added. Volleyball officials have been discussing new safety measures for the event which is now to take place in July. They’re planning on doing temperature checks of the participants before they compete as well as sanitizing volleyballs and courts and spacing courts farther apart. Teams will be limited to 30 members and players will be discouraged from giving each other high-fives or handshakes. So far, 27 shows at the Orange County Convention Center have been canceled. We’ll continue to provide updates on this developing story. Related posts: News! Disney World Purchases MORE Land! Breaking News! 7. While Disney Springs and CityWalk have moved forward in reopening restaurants and stores, there have also been talks about small businesses and the NBA opening back up again too. Disney Springs Since Phase One was expected to last for a few weeks after it began on May 4th, today the Governor has shared that Florida will be starting a new iteration of the reopening process soon. Learn about Florida’s “Full Phase One.” Florida has been in Phase One for a while, but in a press conference Governor Ron DeSantis, the governor, explained that reevaluation has brought some changes and that a “full phase one” is the next step. This phase of reopening will be effective Monday, May 15th. Disney World Monorail During this time, restaurants will move up to 50% indoor capacity. DeSantis encouraged the use of spacing tables and plexiglass as much as possible for this transition. Retail, museums, and libraries will also move to 50% capacity, although local governments have the say on museums and libraries under their purview. Beaches and Cream Newly able to open are the gyms of Florida. The governor reminds folks to be mindful of distancing and lauded Crossfit and outdoor workouts as a safer option. Beyond this, he explained that they want sports back and running saying that any Florida sports venue is pretty much good to go. DeSantis had a message to teams to start training because when the season starts, they’re on. He even mentioned that anyone in states where sports can’t play is welcome to use Florida facilities. ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex During this phase, amusement parks are not cleared to open but they CAN submit reopening plans to the state. The governor asked that these parks identify a certain reopen date ensuring safe operations. Beyond that, parks will require endorsement from local officials. Safety is first, but Florida wants to work towards a “yes” on theme parks. Movie theaters were not mentioned and will likely remain closed into Phase Two. Cinderella Castle At this time Disney World, Universal Orlando, and other theme parks haven’t made a statement about when they’ll be reopening, we’ll keep you updated with more information! Do note, that June Disney World reservations are beginning to be canceled and that Disney World reservations are currently available beginning July 1. 9. These delicious eats are gone, but definitely not forgotten! Vanilla Ice Cream Churro Sandwich It seems like things at Disney World are constantly changing — including the menus! And while we’re always thrilled to see a delicious new snack, sometimes these shakeups mean losing our favorites as well! Here are ten dearly departed Disney World menu triumphs that we want back!! Mickey Celebration Donut Oh, how sad we were when this sweet treat disappeared! The absolutely GIANT Mickey Celebration Donut popped up in Magic Kingdom in honor of Mickey’s 90th birthday. It was introduced as a limited-time offering and moved around to a few different homes over the past year, including The Lunching Pad and Main Street Bakery, before it disappeared in January 2020. Celebration Mickey Donut is Still M.I.A. This huge donut was offered in strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla flavors, and it was the perfect mix of adorable and delicious! Here’s hoping for a surprise return of the Mickey Celebration Donut! Click here to learn more about the Mickey Celebration Donut! Churro Ice Cream Sandwich Here’s another Magic Kingdom treat that we reallllly miss! The Churro Ice Cream Sandwich was served at Sleepy Hollow Refreshments and we still dream about this delicious dessert! The ingredients were surprisingly simple — hand-scooped vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two cookie-shaped churros! Churro Ice Cream Sandwich In March 2020, the Churro Ice Cream Sandwich vanished, being replaced by just the standard chocolate chip Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich. We think this is a solid option as well, but we loved experiencing such a classic Disney dessert in a new and delicious way! Click here for our review of Sleepy Hollow in Magic Kingdom! Hei Hei Cone We’ve seen a TON of character cones and floats at Disney recently! Some of them have definitely been better than others, and one of our favorite options was the Hei Hei Cone from Aloha Isle in Magic Kingdom! A tribute to the lovable sidekick from the movie Moana, this treat was made with a blue cone filled with both Pineapple Dole Whip and Raspberry Dole Whip, topped with sugar-piece “eyes” and a sour candy “comb.” Hei Hei Cone This was another item that was released as a limited-time offering and the Hei Hei Cone bowed out of the parks in May 2019. This was one of our favorite character cones — it was both tasty AND super Instagramable! We’ve seen newer themed cones come out since then, like the Arendelle Aqua cone at Storybook Treats this past fall and winter, so you never know what might show up next! And luckily, the raspberry Dole Whip flavor stuck around at Aloha Isle! Take a look at more of the limited-time character cones we’ve seen at Disney World! Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup at Refreshment Port Okay, we’re talking about the Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup that was sold SPECIFICALLY at the Refreshment Port location in Epcot — in other words, don’t panic, it’s still on the menu at Le Cellier Steakhouse! A few years ago, this iconic menu item made its way to the quick-service location near the entrance of the World Showcase. AND, it was snack credit eligible for those on the Disney Dining Plan! This was a huuuuge deal, because it gave us the chance to enjoy this delicious cheesy, bacony soup without snagging a hard-to-get reservation at a pricy steakhouse! Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup But sadly, this warm bowl of happiness is no longer available on the Refreshment Port menu. While it does regularly pop up on the Epcot Food and Wine Festival menu at the Canada Booth, we’d love to see it earn a permanent spot again at a quick service location! Here are the menu items we hope to see return at this year’s Epcot Food and Wine Festival! Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup Poutine We’re not headed far at all for our next pick — in fact, we’re just scanning down the menu a bit! Back in the good old days when Refreshment Port served the above-mentioned soup, they also served a Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup Poutine! This salty snack consisted of french fries topped with the cheddar cheese soup AND cheese curds. And it was OUT. OF. THIS. WORLD! Cheddar Cheese Soup and Poutine from Refreshment Port This gave us a new way to experience two of our favorite things — poutine and cheddar cheese soup (oh yeah — and MORE cheese!). But alas, when the soup was removed from the menu, so was this specialty poutine. Refreshment Port does still serve up some poutine options though, so at least there is a silver lining in this story! Looking for more poutine?? Here are six must-try poutines at Disney World! Hot Diggity Dog of the Month For most of 2018-2019 in Magic Kingdom, Casey’s Corner featured a different Hot Diggity Dog of the Month each month of the year! And while some of them were definitely a little odd (we didn’t love the Cheesy Hot Diggity Dog with stale cheese puffs), there were some super fun standouts! Both the Buffalo Chicken Hot Diggity Dog and the Loaded Mashed Potato Hot Diggity Dog were big winners in our book. Loaded Mashed Potato Hot Diggity Dog They haven’t done these in a few months, so we’re hoping they start up again once the parks reopen. Did you know there is a hot dog food truck in Disney Springs?? Click here to check out our review! Clam Chowder in a Bread Bowl If you head to Columbia Harbor House in Magic Kingdom, you can still order yourself a bowl of New England Clam Chowder. BUT, sadly, the bowl won’t be edible (and we don’t suggest you try with the paper version!). This location used to serve up their chowder in a delicious, carby bread bowl that really took the comfort food factor to the next level. New England Clam Chowder We’ve seen clam chowder bread bowls pop up briefly at other locations like Dockside Diner, but none of them seem to stick around for long. C’mon Disney, give us back the Columbia Harbor House Bread Bowl! Dockside Diner Specialty Milk Shakes Formerly known as Min and Bill’s Dockside Diner, this Disney’s Hollywood Studios quick service location has trimmed more than just its name over the years! In the past, they’ve offered some truly incredible specialty milkshakes. From the Cinnamon Sweet Churro Milkshake, to the Black Forest Milkshake, and the Star Wars-inspired Blue Milkshake, the humble Dockside Diner was a pioneer of inventive shakes! Blue Milk Shake The regular menu does feature a Kahlúa and Baileys Milkshake, but as far as the non-alcoholic flavors they’re pretty basic — chocolate and vanilla. We weep for these awesome specialty flavors that deserve a home! Check out these over-the-top milkshakes at Beaches and Cream for your crazy shake fix! BLT Waffle Fries Waffle fries are the ultimate base for loading on the toppings. And Golden Oak Outpost in Magic Kingdom has taken full advantage of that! Their menu still features several topped-waffle fries but one of our favorites has vanished. The BLT Waffle Fries came loaded with bacon, lettuce, tomato (of course!), and ranch dressing. We looooved this crispy, salty creation — and they definitely didn’t skim on the toppings! BLT Waffle Fries Since Golden Oak Outpost does still have other loaded waffle fries (and onion rings!) on the menu, we’re keeping an eye out just in case our beloved BLT waffle fries return! We ranked the lands of the Magic Kingdom based on their snacks! Lightsaber Churros Very tasty, they are! We’ve seen Lightsaber Churros briefly come and quickly go from Disney’s Hollywood Studios several times! They’ve popped up at special events and parties, and they were available to guests in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Disney’s Hollywood Studios back in 2019, as well as during the grand opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Lightsaber Churros Sure, they taste pretty much exactly like the classic Disney churros, but they’re so fun! And we think they would make for a solid alternative when we can’t get a reservation (or don’t want to lay out the cash dollas) to build a lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop! Take a peek inside the 30th-anniversary celebration of Disney’s Hollywood Studios! We loooove eating our way around Disney World! And even though we never have an issue finding something delicious to try, there are some home runs that we wish Disney would bring back for a victory lap (or forever!). These are the menu triumphs that we’re still wishing on a star to return! Click here to watch our video on the must-eat snacks in Disney World this year! In addition to Earl of Sandwich and Chicken Guy! which we’ve previously confirmed would be reopening on May 20th, Planet Hollywood will also resume its operations starting next Wednesday. 12. From unpopular Disney opinions to uncontrollable tears, we’re going there! Space Mountain Minnie Ears We have countless wonderful memories of our Disney World vacations — but these are the moments that didn’t make the family photo album! Let’s shine a light on the experiences we’ve all had on a Disney trip but we’re too afraid to talk about! Cried Like a Baby Let’s start off our list with the waterworks! Yup, we’ll admit that we’re guilty of letting the tears flow at Disney World. On the bright side, sometimes our tears stem from an intense positive emotion — getting our first look at Cinderella Castle or the finale of Happily Ever After can definitely bring a Disney fan to tears! In these cases, we encourage you to let those emotions happen. In fact, we’re right there with you (who’s cutting onions near us?)! I’m not crying YOU’RE CRYING Of course, we’ve also had our share of not-so-happy-tears at Disney World. As magical as it is, a Disney vacation can be overwhelming. Sometimes the heat, hunger, dehydration, or exhaustion can sneak up and cause a mini-breakdown. We can say from experience that taking a quick break inside a restaurant or even heading back to the hotel for a nap can work wonders! Disney’s Pop Century Resort If you do find yourself getting a bit emotional at Disney World, you can take comfort in knowing you wouldn’t be the first person to cry in the parks — and you won’t be the last, either! We’re guilty of watering up as we say goodbye to Disney World pretty much every time we go! Oh, and we’ve had some stress- and anger-induced sob sessions as well. It’s OK! We’re all human! Click here to watch the Happily Ever After Fireworks at home (so no one can see you cry!) Had Every Inch of our Body COVERED in Sweat Get ready for a not-so-groundbreaking statement…Florida is hot and it’s humid. And it can be unbearably hot and muggy in the summer. So yeah, we are quite familiar with the uncomfortable feeling of sweating through every piece of clothing we are wearing! An important tip here — remember to pack extra essentials like t-shirts and underwear especially if you’re traveling in the summer. We’ve definitely found ourselves changing our entire outfit multiple times a day! Olaf Another trick we use to feel a liiiittle less nasty — toss some deodorant, a cooling fan, and an extra set of clothes in your park bag before you head out for the day! It’s not the same as a shower (we promise we still hop in as soon as we get back to our rooms!) but it can help you make it through the day without having to run back to the hotel to freshen up. Check out our tips for beating the summer heat at Disney World! Had to Choose Between Peeing our Pants and Losing our Spot in Line While a few attractions do have restrooms in their queues (shoutout to Flight of Passage for hooking us up in that inevitably long line!) most of the time you won’t get so lucky. After learning the hard way, we always head to the restroom (ESPECIALLY when our kids are with us!) before hopping in line for an attraction with a long wait like Slinky Dog Dash or Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Slinky Dog Dash You don’t want to commit to a 2-hour wait and realize an hour in that your kid has to GO NOW and bail out of line. We try our best not to encourage peeing our pants in line at all costs. Did you know about these brand new restrooms in Hollywood Studios?? Been Unimpressed by an Iconic Attraction We all have our own opinions and sometimes they can be a little unpopular! So, what if that ride, snack, or show that your family member has been raving about leaves you feeling meh? Just know that’s perfectly okay! Not everyone loves Dole Whip (gasp!), Pirates of the Caribbean (say it isn’t so!), or Fantasmic (inconceivable!). Pirates of the Caribbean It’s totally okay if something in Disney World is a one-and-done for you. And you can even look up brief descriptions of rides and menu items on My Disney Experience (or here on DFB!) before your trip to get an idea of what might be up your alley. Or, you can take it a step further by looking up ride-through videos of attractions and reviews of dining locations. Just know that if you walk away feeling less-than-blown-away by something at Disney, there’s nothing wrong with you! Here are some unpopular Disney opinions that are probably 100% correct! Immediately Regretted an Impulse Purchase There are tons of “shiny toys” at Disney World and sometimes we just can’t help but indulge! Buuut…sometimes that doesn’t lead to the wisest purchasing decisions. If you’re taking the kiddos on a Disney trip, try picking up a few things on the cheap before your trip, like bubble wands, glow toys, and plushes! Magic Kingdom If you do end up having instant buyers’ remorse over an in-park purchase, don’t panic! Disney has a pretty lenient return policy, and you can return most items at any Disney-owned merchandise location on property. Just keep in mind that a few items can’t be returned (like personalized MagicBands and Ear Hats), so be extra sure you want those before you swipe your card! Check out the fun new Disney Eats collection available on shopDisney! Not Bought Something and Regretted It On the other hand, sometimes our impulse control is TOO good! If you passed up a souvenir that you now realize you just HAVE to have, all hope isn’t lost! Check the Shop Merchandise section in My Disney Experience to see if that must-have merch is available elsewhere. Sometimes things are available to purchase directly in the app, while others are available in-store only. But wait, there’s more! The app will also show you all the merchandise locations on property that carry the item! ©Disney That way, you can swing by the closest location to try to snag that perfect memento! Click here for our ultimate guide to the top rides in Disney World! Slept Through a FastPass Did we mention that Disney is exhausting?? Sometimes as much as our minds are ready to go get in those early morning rides, our bodies just won’t cooperate! If you do happen to snooze past your alarm, pull up your My Disney Experience app and try to modify your FastPass reservation for later in the day! FastPass with option to Change There might not be a later time available, especially if it’s a big-name attraction, but don’t give up! Keep refreshing the app, because same-day reservations do open up as other guests modify or cancel their FastPasses. Here are three tips for mastering the FastPass Tiers at Disney World! Tripped Over the Tracks and Curbs on Main Street, U.S.A. Well, there’s not much to say about this one, other than watch your step! That’s easier said than done given the sensory overload that is Main Street, U.S.A. As distracting as the crowds, the castle, and the Disney magic can be, be aware of the trolley tracks that run down the middle of Main Street in the Magic Kingdom! And the curbs outside of the shops can sneak up on us as well! Main Street, U.S.A. Try to really take your time and mind your step as you’re entering Magic Kingdom — ending up with a rolled ankle or scraped knee isn’t a very magical way to start the day (but it has happened to us!). Here are the most surprising things in Magic Kingdom! Had One Too Many Drinks Around the World There are so many amazing beverage options in the World Showcase at Epcot — sometimes it’s hard to control ourselves! How can we say no to a margarita at La Cava del Tequila or an ice-cream martini at L’Artisan des Glaces?! With all of the fun and delicious choices, we admit that we’ve overindulged a time or two (we don’t encourage it, but it happens!). Cheers to Mexico! But, we’ve learned the importance of pacing ourselves with our drinks around the world! And given the Florida heat, it’s essential to stay hydrated — so drink plenty of water between those boozy beverages. Breaking up those drinks with a snack is helpful as well. And with the incredible food options at Epcot, we definitely don’t mind snacking AND sipping! Check out these awesome new margaritas in Epcot! Taken a Power Nap on the Bus We’ve had some loooooong days at Disney. So we’ll take our zzz’s where we can get them! We’ll admit that we’ve enjoyed a few precious minutes of shut-eye on Disney busses, monorail, and even on some attractions (sorry Carousel of Progress, we still love you!). Carousel of Progress Desk Plate As long as you’re in a safe spot and someone in your party is awake to keep an eye on you (and your belongings, and the rest of the fam!) we fully support a little snooze where you can find it. Just remember to wake up when you get to your bus stop! Here are 13 Disney World Hotel rooms that are totally worth the upgrade! Had a Meltdown We’ll come full-circle with another mishap that is often exhaustion-induced — the dreaded meltdown. Whether it’s you or another member of your family, Disney World can be overwhelming enough to trigger some fighting. When we find ourselves here, we find it’s best to cool off, both literally and figuratively. Head back to the hotel and enjoy a much-needed nap, or swing by the pool for a quick reset. Disney’s Riviera Resort Pool With all of the intense emotions swirling at Disney World, sometimes meltdowns can happen. Just know that it doesn’t have to ruin your trip! Taking a little breather can work wonders and help get your vacay back on track! From the sweaty to the sleepy, the boozy to the breakdowns, and the tears to the tumbles, these are the things we’ve alllll done in Disney World — that nobody talks about! So, the next time you find yourself experiencing one of these struggles, know that you’re not alone and there are ways to power through! “Are the Hall of Presidents wearing any underwear?” and other burning questions about Disney World we have to discuss! 14. One of the outcomes of the global health crisis is that as movie theaters shutter, Disney has had to delay the release of some serious blockbusters. ©Walt Disney Studios Perhaps the highest-profile delay was of the live-action Mulan that was set to hit theaters in March. The film was pushed back almost immediately after having its world premiere. Now, it is set to debut July 24 and could potentially debut to low-capacity theaters in order to maintain social distancing. Although this could make it seem like Disney would gross less if the theaters can’t seat as many viewers, Hollywood expects that films can succeed even with fewer seats in the movie theaters — here’s why. According to the Hollywood Reporter, film executives think that films can be successful with theaters at a lower capacity. Paramount president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson is quoted, “Even at reduced capacity because of social distancing, there would be plenty of seats for the summer release schedule the way it is mapped out now.” © Disney As it turns out, it’s not uncommon for theaters to go with 50% or more of their seats unfilled on the weekends and still have the business be profitable. It’s rare that a movie showing is sold out already, so even if demand remained the same, theater owners are confident in being able to seat viewers in a distanced pattern. The suggested seating arrangement has come to be called “checkered seating” and would have guests sitting every other row, with seats between each guest on the occupied rows. This could slash capacity in theaters to 25% to 50% capacity. The Rise of Skywalker at AMC Disney understands that theaters are rarely full under normal circumstances. CEO Bob Chapek mentioned that the Mulan release date is firm and that attendance in theaters generally runs at about 25% capacity on weekdays anyway. Besides, even as seating in each theater is limited, there should be more screens available to show a movie. Distancing and capacity won’t be as much of an issue if five different screens are showing Mulan at one cinema. This could occur thanks to the fact that there will be fewer new films releasing for a few months as the film industry works to get back into a routine. ©Disney President and COO of Ted Mundorff summed up film industry feelings saying, “I’m happy to max out at any capacity we have to abide by. It means people want to come back to the movies. And 50 percent would be a very healthy crowd.” We will have to see if all of these factors play out as anticipated once the film debuts in July! 16. Even the most seasoned Disney World vacationers still make mistakes! Cinderella Castle As magical as they are, Disney vacations definitely take a LOT of planning! So, no matter how many times you’ve been, you’re still bound to make some mistakes. And we’re no exception! Here are the biggest mistakes we’ve made in Disney World! Not Making a Room Location Request Believe it or not, your room location can have a pretty big impact on your experience, and a room request can help! Whether you want to be close to the lobby or elevators, in a certain building or wing of the hotel, or on a certain floor, many of the “unknowns” of your room location can be requested according to your preferences. And it can make a HUGE difference when it comes to your overall vacation experience. Room at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Keep in mind there are certain room requests that come with an upcharge. Staying in a themed room like the Pirate Rooms at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort or selecting a specific view like a Water or Garden View Room will typically run you a bit more than the Standard View Room rate, BUT they come with perks like special theming or prime locations at your resort. Pirate Room But there is a way to request a room location for Standard Rooms without an added cost — just keep in mind that you won’t be guaranteed a specific area! Yacht Club Resort Lobby There are two ways to make a room request before your trip. First, you can enter up to two room requests when you complete your online resort check-in through My Disney Experience. ©Disney Or, you can also contact your hotel directly about five days before your check-in date — that’s typically when rooms are being assigned! Animal Kingdom Lodge You may want to consider requesting a room close to the lobby. The hallways at Disney hotels can be suuuuper long (looking at you, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge — Kidani Village!), and it can be tough to make it all the way back to the room after a long day at the parks! Simply requesting a closer room can shave a significant amount of time walking to and from your room each day! Or, if you have some light sleepers or mid-day nappers in your family and you’re concerned about noise, you might not want to be near the lobby or pool areas! The Rooms Facing the Pool Might Not Be the Quietest! Keep in mind that guests with mobility issues or families with strollers may want to request a first-floor room, especially if their resort doesn’t always have elevator access to upper floors (Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, for instance). If you do find that your room location isn’t working for you when you arrive, you can speak with a Cast Member to request a new room. They’ll do their best to help you out, just keep in mind that they might not be able to relocate you immediately, especially if you’re traveling during a busy time! Check out this recently refurbished room at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge! Forgetting About the Minnie Vans Minnie Vans are a private ride service available for guests to travel around Walt Disney World property and between Disney World and the Orlando International Airport. The vans seat up to six passengers with two convertible car seats available. While the service is run through the Lyft app, the drivers are Disney Cast Members. Minnie Van Now, Minnie Vans are pricey — each ride around Disney property runs $15 plus $2.75 per mile. So, this is definitely more of a splurge, but there are a few times that a Minnie Van ride can really come in handy! If you have a reservation at Hoop Dee Doo Revue or Trail’s End Restaurant at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort, the Minnie Van can drop you off right outside the restaurant! This is a huge help, because guests normally have to navigate the resort’s internal bus system if they’re driving or taking a Disney bus to the resort. Hoop-Dee-Doo Pioneer Hall Players They can also be super helpful if you’re cutting it close for an Advance Dining Reservation or FastPass+ reservation in another park! Disney transportation can be unpredictable at times, so having a reliable backup plan is a good idea. Pandora Again, a Minnie Van ride isn’t cheap, so it might not be the best option for all of your Disney transportation needs. But requesting a Minnie Van when we were running late for reservations or on our way to a location off the beaten path could have saved us a ton of stress on past trips! Here’s everything you need to know about the Minnie Van service at Disney World! Waiting to Buy Must-Have Merchandise Take it from us, if you’re walking down Main Street, U.S.A. and see something in a store window that you just have to have, it’s best to jump on it! There’s a chance it won’t be there if you come back later to make that purchase! Disney fans looooove their merchandise and a lot of popular items sell out super quickly — especially things like new Mickey or Minnie Ear designs and limited-edition merchandise! Ink & Paint Minnie Ears On top of that, not every location sells the same merchandise! So, if you’re park-hopping and see something you like, don’t assume that you’ll be able to find it on your next stop in a gift shop! Even World of Disney doesn’t carry some specialty merchandise. Disney Tails Merchandise Plus, Disney World has a super lenient return policy — you can return most items (with a few exceptions, like personalized items) at any Disney owned merchandise location on property. So, just in case you do end up with some buyers’ remorse, it’s usually not too much of a hassle to make a return! If you’re concerned about having to carry your purchase around with you all day, you can always have the item shipped to your Disney World resort if you’re staying at a Disney-owned hotel. If you’re not on property, you can also have the item shipped home from any Disney World register. Check out this Mickey jewelry collection available on shopDisney! Planning a Trip When Our Favorite Ride Was Closed Has anyone else ever gotten soooo excited about their Disney vacation that they dive in head-first?? Because we definitely have! And while rides will sometimes temporarily be closed due to weather or mechanical issues, there are attractions that have scheduled refurbishments for months at a time. Keep in mind that water rides like Splash Mountain and Kali River Rapids typically go down for maintenance beginning in January every year, so you can plan around a few of these closures somewhat reliably. Splash Mountain refurbishment Other rides will occasionally go down for construction as well. Disney makes a note of any scheduled attraction closings on their interactive park hours calendar. The Walt Disney Railroad So learn from our heartbreak — check the calendar for refurbishments as soon as you start planning! Click here to read about the ongoing transformation of Epcot! Rope Dropping the “Wrong Way” For those of you not in on the Disney lingo, “rope dropping” is getting into a park as SOON as it opens to take advantage of lower crowds and shorter lines. But, in order to really get the most out of rope drop, you’ll need to get to the park at least 30-45 minutes BEFORE the posted opening time. Magic Kingdom Cast Members will usually begin allowing guests into certain sections of the park before the posted opening time. So, even though they can’t actually get on any of the attractions, they can get a head start on lining up before the park even officially opens! And since early mornings can be tough even at Disney World, we’ve definitely been guilty of being a little slow on our rope drop arrival. Slinky Dog in Toy Story Land Another important thing to keep in mind — guests tend to head for the super popular attractions for rope drop. So, the wait for rides like Slinky Dog Dash in Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Flight of Passage in Disney’s Animal Kingdom can easily be an hour or more just a few minutes after the park opens! The line will still be shorter than during the peak of the day, but if you’re looking for a walk-on at rope drop, you probably won’t find it at a headlining attraction unless you were at the front of the pack. Looking for even shorter waits than rope drop? Click here to learn more about the Disney After Hours events! Missing out on a Rise of the Resistance Boarding Group Here’s another early morning task we’ve dropped the ball on before! Rise of the Resistance is the new MEGA POPULAR attraction in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Given the popularity of the ride, the only way to experience it is by getting a boarding pass as soon as the park opens. And we do mean AS SOON as the park opens! Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance The boarding groups are distributed through the My Disney Experience app, but there are a few important tips to follow if you want to secure one! First, be sure to get to Hollywood Studios at least 45 minutes before the scheduled opening time. In order to get a boarding group in the app, you will need to be inside the park — meaning through security AND the front entrance — before the park opens! The boarding groups are usually fully distributed within just a few minutes of the park opening, so if you aren’t there ready and waiting with your phone in hand, you’ll probably miss out! Hollywood Studios Before Park Opening On a related note, we suggest using a rideshare service (or driving yourself to the park if you have a car!) instead of taking Disney transportation. While in theory the buses and Disney Skyliner should be running early enough to get you there on time, they have been known to experience unexpected delays. And you don’t want to miss out on a boarding group while you’re waiting on a bus! Rise of the Resistance Boarding Groups Sign Also, make sure your entire party is connected in My Disney Experience before you head to the park — only one person needs to grab boarding passes for your whole group (but remember, everyone still has to be inside the park to qualify!). And last but not least, take screenshots of the entire boarding group process. That way, if a glitch does pop up, you’ll have proof of the timestamps, which will make it easier for a Cast Member to help you out! Click here to learn more about Rise of the Resistance! Not Budgeting Enough Time to Get to Our Reservations Ah, here’s a mistake we’ve been guilty of making multiple times! It can take a lot of time to get around Disney World property. So, if you have an Advance Dining Reservation or FastPass+ reservation in another park (or even on the other side of the SAME park!), you need to give yourself enough travel time to get there! Crystal Palace Disney transportation can experience unexpected delays, and that goes for the buses, Skyliner, monorail, AND ferry boats! You might be waiting around for your transportation to arrive, and there could be delays en route. Epcot Monorail You might be able to make it to some places in under an hour, especially if you’re traveling between the World Showcase at Epcot and Hollywood Studios using the Skyliner. BUT to be on the safe side, give yourself two hours to make it from one park to another for a dining or FastPass reservation! Tower of Terror Sign Don’t forget how much time it could take to WALK from one side of a park to another as well as other in-park slowdowns you could run into. You don’t want to be running from Spaceship Earth to the Japan Pavilion in Epcot (that’s like a mile of ground you have to cover!) with minutes ’til a dinner reservation at Teppan Edo, or stuck behind the barricade for the Festival of Fantasy parade in Magic Kingdom trying to get to Liberty Tree Tavern for a late lunch reservation, so plan ahead! Don’t Get Stuck Behind This Trying to Get to Your Reservation! If you’re cutting it close, Cast Members will often grant you a few minutes of grace time after your reservation (usually about 15 minutes). But if there’s no way you can make it in time, be sure to pull up your My Disney Experience app to see if there are later time slots available or try to call the location! Check out our three tips for mastering the Disney World FastPass+ Tiers! Yes it’s true, even Disney super-fans still make mistakes! These are some of the faux pas that we’ve fallen victim to in some of our recent trips! Hopefully you’ll learn from our errors and avoid these Disney World pitfalls. But if (or should we say, when!) things don’t go according to plan on your vacation, just remember that we’ve all been there — and making memories with our loved ones is what really counts! 18. The Walt Disney Company holds a relatively impeccable brand image, one that has been known and loved by millions over generations. Disney World Skyliner Still, sometimes even the happiest and most wholesome of brands will take a hit from a surprising accident or miscommunication. From the Skyliner incident last year to the international closure of all Disney parks, check out these 6 times that Disney had to deal with a public relations nightmare! 1. Attempting to Claim #Maythe4th on Twitter Just a couple of weeks ago Disney dealt with some backlash as they were accused of trying to claim #Maythe4th on Twitter. Basically, Disney+ tweeted that use of the hashtag implied consent to Disney’s Terms of Service. Since #Maythe4th has been around for a while, users across Twitter were not happy with Disney attempting to attach their terms to it. Pretty soon, subscribers and lawyers alike flocked to their keyboards and phones to explain that Disney could not attach consent of their terms to the hashtag, according to Insider. It’s Chewbacca! A few hours later, Disney+ tweeted again clarifying that the controversial tweet had a limited application for the purpose of a possible surprise feature on Disney+ on May 4th. The clarifying tweet said, “The above legal language applies ONLY to replies to this tweet using #Maythe4th and mentioning @DisneyPlus. These replies may appear in something special on May the 4th!” Still, twitter audiences condemned the poor handling of the promotion. Click here to check out the official May the 4th video from Disney! 2. Trademarking the Phrase “Hakuna Matata” A few years ago, the company dealt with some uproar over their trademark on the Swahili phrase, “Hakuna Matata.” Despite, being trademarked back in 1994, some activists ignited backlash leading up to the release of the live-action The Lion King in 2019, according to Deadline. Hakuna Matata Shirt The negative response was rooted in the fact that a trademark on a common Swahili phrase felt disrespectful to the culture. Zimbabwean activist Shelton Mpala was quoted saying, “While we respect Disney as an entertainment institution responsible for creating many of our childhood memories, the decision to trademark ‘Hakuna Matata’ is predicated purely on greed and is an insult not only to the spirit of the Swahili people but also, Africa as a whole.” Hakuna Matata Tee Disney responded by mentioning that the phrase is copyrighted only for use on t-shirts and doesn’t prevent individual use of the phrase. They also noted that plenty of popular phrases have been trademarked over the years such as “Merry Christmas” and “Seasons Greetings.” Eventually, backlash died down without any further action from Disney. Want to see how Disney World celebrated the release of 2019’s The Lion King? Click here! 3. Applying to Trademark “Dia de los Muertos” “Hakuna Matata” hasn’t been the only trademark that left Disney in hot water. According to USA Today, during the 2013 production of Disney/Pixar’s Coco, Disney attempted to trademark the phrase “Dia de los Muertos,” the name of the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead. ©Disney Within hours uproar ensued. People accused the company of attempting to trademark a cultural tradition. Lalo Alcaraz, the creator of the comic strip “La Cucaracha,” tweeted: “Disney to trademark Dia de Los Muertos, also your dead relatives.” Yikes. Plaza de la Familia Disney ended up pulling the trademark application on the same day saying, “As we have previously announced, Disney-Pixar is developing an animated feature inspired by the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos. Disney’s trademark filing was intended to protect any potential title for our film and related activities. It has since been determined that the title of the film will change, and therefore we are withdrawing our trademark filing.“ Do you love Coco? Click here to make an iconic dish from the film! 4. Charging an Elementary School for Showing The Lion King We’ve got another time that The Lion King spurred a controversial situation! Earlier this year, Disney fined a Californian elementary school $250 for showing 2019’s The Lion King at a fundraiser, per CNN Business. The Lion King ©Disney According to CNN, many around the country expressed distaste for Disney’s “very corporate” action. Though the school’s Parent-Teacher Association begrudgingly agreed to pay the fine out of the $800 that they made for the fundraiser, the backlash ended up having Disney pull the fine and issue an apology. ©Disney Then-CEO Bob Iger personally apologized tweeting, “Our company @WaltDisneyCo apologizes to the Emerson Elementary School PTA. I will personally donate to their fundraising initiative.” Click here to remember a Lion King animator and Disney icon, Ann Sullivan. 5. The Skyliner Accident and Other Transportation Incidents Sometimes accidents in the park bring serious PR challenges for Disney! Walt Disney World has seen a few large-scale transportation tragedies in recent years. You might remember the devastating monorail crash in 2011 (you can read the Orlando Sentinel’s coverage here). Monorail at Disney World In 2019, just after the opening of the brand-new Disney Skyliner System, the Skyliner had an accident that caused a complete shutdown of the transport with guests stuck onboard for hours. Disney Skyliner Thankfully, there were no injuries. But naturally, many Disney fans were put-off by this incident. Disney had to contend with unhappy guests who were directly affected by the incident, as well as those raising questions about the company’s attention to safety — some even citing the fatal monorail crash. Riviera Resort Skyliner In response, Disney released a statement that expressed apologies to all affected guests and reassured that they were investigating the cause of the incident. The following weeks saw the addition of a dedicated guest relations line for the Gondola System. Want to find out how Disney compensated affected guests? Click here! 6. The Closure of All Disney Parks Internationally As you’re probably aware, Disney parks around the world closed in early 2020 in response to the global health crisis. With such large-scale closures and pressing health concerns, Disney has had a whole new PR landscape to navigate. Disneyland Main Entrance With a lot of what-ifs as the crisis progresses, Disney has been hesitant to make any official statements regarding a reopening. Still, quotes from Disney executives and Bob Iger show that work is going on behind the scenes to prepare Disney for a reopening of the parks that focuses on health and safety for guests and Cast Members. An Empty BoardWalk Resort Disney has taken the first steps out of the worldwide closures by reopening Shanghai Disneyland on May 11th. The park reopened with guests and cast members required to wear face masks, strict sanitation procedures being practiced throughout the park, as well as extensive social distancing protocols being enforced. This reopening signals the very start of Disney’s slow crawl out of the longest and most extensive closures the company has ever faced. To upkeep the brand in the interim, Disney has continued a few merchandise releases as normal and even released a bunch of online content such as live streams, the Disney Magic Moments website, and new features in the Disney parks apps. Click here to experience some Disney magic from home! Unfortunately, Disney parks are not immune to tragedy. Disney has had to respond to many incidents over the years (including several that we’re not mentioning here), but in most, if not all, cases they handled it with as much tact as the situations allowed. While the current closures are certainly the lengthiest and most publicly broadcasted of Disney’s Public Relations woes, at each turn they have been ready to face the press and the public with a thoughtful response. 20. Disneyland Shanghai recently reopened with a sharply limited capacity. Currently the park is limiting capacity to below 30%, and guests must have a reservation (either a dated park ticket, or an actual reservation). ©WaltDisneyImagineering on Instagram That “limited capacity” bit has us (and our readers!) a little worried. Is there a chance that Disney will limit capacity so sharply that there is a risk of guests not getting into the park even WITH a hotel reservation and park ticket? How is Disney World going to implement these capacity limits? Let’s take a look at how Disney has handled this in the past. Disney has had to limit park attendance in the past. This isn’t the first time that Disney has had to place a limit on park attendance. In fact, it’s happened often, using several different methods. Tiered Closure During Holiday Park Capacity Limits Pretty much every year Disney has to turn guests away at the gates of Magic Kingdom during the holiday season! In this instance, the capacity limits follow a priority schedule where the parks close to walk-up guests first and then step up through the tiers — those with hotel reservations, annual passholders, etc. — until they close for everyone when the park hits its safe capacity. Heavy Fireworks Crowds With lowered capacities, Disney World could opt to use their usual capacity closure protocol considering it is already an established system. If this were the case, we would likely see the tiered closure introduced at a much smaller number guests — especially if Disney World’s capacity is as limited as Shanghai Disneyland’s. Crowded Magic Kingdom Virtual Queues and Boarding Passes and/or Hotel-Guest-Only Systems Another way that Disney has limited guest numbers in the past has been with virtual queues and boarding groups. These are being used right now with the all-new and mega-popular Rise of the Resistance, but before that, they were actually used to enter Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge as a whole. In Disneyland, there was about a two month time period where only people with Disney hotel reservations could get into Galaxy’s Edge and all reservation holders had a limit of four hours in the land per reservation. If there is an issue of limited capacity, perhaps such queues could be implemented for different high traffic areas of the parks, or even the parks themselves. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge It sounds kind of crazy to think of a potential time limit in the parks, but Disney does have experience utilizing a virtual queue system so that could be what they fall back on. Regardless, we already know that Disney is considering the use of virtual queues to help with distancing in lines! We can also take a look at the opening of Disneyland Shanghai! SO FAR, the sitch in Shanghai is probably closest to what we can expect when Disney World reopens. The park initially opened with a new reservation system where guests — including annual passholders — had to make a reservation to get in the park. This way, Disney knows exactly how many people they are allowing in. Shanghai Disneyland If all goes well in Shanghai, this reservation system presents a potential solution in Disney parks. In that case, you would know for a FACT, in advance, whether or not there’s space for you in the park. That reservation would mean entry, not just your ticket. But currently, Disney has already sold hundreds of thousands of dated tickets for the remainder of the year. If the parks open with limited capacity, does everyone still get in, or do those with tickets still have to win the “lottery” of a reservations system? It remains to be seen. Click here to learn more about the reservation system in Shanghai! In the case of a phased reopening, Florida residents may be the only ones who have to worry about not getting into the park. If you don’t live in Florida, you may not have to worry about getting turned away at the gate at all. Per the proposed phased plan suggested by the Re-Open Florida Task Force, Florida residents could be the first guests allowed into the parks — exclusively. Florida-themed Orange Bird Mural Not only does this mean that non-Florida residents wouldn’t be able to get in, but it also means that capacity will naturally limit itself. As you can imagine, there are a whole lot more potential Disney guests outside of Florida than there are in Florida, but many are not able to travel at this time. If Disney is considering turning ticketed guests away at capacity, the idea of Florida residents being solely allowed in the parks could make sense. If a Florida resident is turned away, they won’t have to travel as far and many of them won’t be spending a good bit of money on the hotel reservations either. Magic Kingdom Still, Disney is allowing ANYONE to book vacation packages after July 1st right now. If a phased reopening with Florida residents first is the case, will they have to go through another round of canceling and rescheduling NON-Florida residents’ vacations? Maybe. After all, they’ve already done several rounds of cancellations. It’s not implausible that more will come. To learn more about the Re-Open Florida Task Force plan, click here! What does all this mean for YOU? Will YOU get turned away at the gate? This is all uncharted territory, so we have to be aware of the possibilities. As long as things go well in Shanghai, the case may be that advance reservations ARE the process. In this case, at least you’ll KNOW whether you’re in or not based on if you get a reservation. Magic Kingdom But remember, just because the parks are open doesn’t mean your reservations are a go. Capacity limits, health measures, and phased reopenings could very well mean that your trip needs to be canceled or moved. Disney wants guests back to enjoying the parks as soon as possible, but there are a lot of caveats to doing so safely and responsibly. It’s unknown at this time WHAT steps Disney World will take upon reopening. But at this time, we have a few possible options we can examine. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we hear any concrete plans from Disney. Thinking about making a reservation soon? Click here! How do you think Disney would go about limiting capacity? 22. In honor of last year’s 50th anniversary of the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland park, the Disneyland Resort Line — a magazine published exclusively for Disneyland Resort cast members — featured a variety of commemorative stories in its Aug. 1, 2019 issue. One such story, written by Editorial Manager Lisa Greathouse, shares how two Haunted Mansion cast members fell in “love at first fright” in 1989. Enjoy this #DisneyCastLife story below! Senior Stage Manager Dave Atkins will never forget the day in late 1989 when, as part of the opening crew on Splash Mountain, he began cross-training on Haunted Mansion and spotted a new hire who was part of a different training group. “It was love at first fright,” Dave says with a laugh. Eve, that “new hire” who caught Dave’s eye 30 years ago, rolls her eyes. “That is such a dad joke,” she says. The couple, who began dating a few months after first meeting, recently celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary and have two sons, ages 16 and 19. “They think it’s pretty cool that their parents met at Haunted Mansion,” says Eve, who left the company in 1994 for a career in Human Resources. Dave, who works in Disney Photo Imaging, says the couple’s circle of friends include many Cast Members (past and present) they met working in New Orleans and Critter Country during the 1990s. He even recalls sitting in a circle in the mansion’s expanding room with fellow Cast on Halloween night after the park closed, telling ghost stories late into the night. “Haunted Mansion is still my favorite attraction — and not just because I met this incredible woman there,” Dave says, glancing at Eve. “It’s an attraction that is better than it needed to be, full of so many little details and incredibly rich storytelling. Anyone who has trained on that attraction has stories that build on the lore. There’s always a little bit of mystery.” View the full article
