Did Disney Drop a HINT About the HUGE Magic Kingdom Expansion Project?

It may feel like it was just yesterday that Disney dropped a TON of updates on new projects planned for the parks and resorts. But time flies — and we’ve already got a potential update on the HUGE Magic Kingdom park expansion.

We’re starting to see some of Disney’s visions come to life through the newest Disney Cruise Line ship to join the fleet, Disney’s latest tropical destination for Disney Cruise Line passengers, the appearance of the Hatbox Ghost in Disney World’s version of the Haunted Mansion ride, and most recently the closing of Country Bear Jamboree to make way for a new version of the classic attraction. But there’s one project that’s been on our minds a LOT lately. Let’s talk aboutit!

If you’ve been waiting with bated breath to hear what could be “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain,” we may have clues bringing us one step closer. Ever since the “blue sky” segment presented by Disney’s Chairman, Josh D’Amaro, during 2023’s Destination D23 event, we’ve been keeping our eyes and ears out for updates on some major projects Disney teased.

However, the recently public 2023 Reedy Creek Improvement District long-term land use plan may be our first hint about what’s to come. Disney’s filing outlines some BIG changes from its last land use plan, which was proposed in 2020.

This new plan added a new designation for land use called “Marginally Unsuitable.” The 2023 plan identifies these areas as land with recognizable constraints for development. A big factor in determining if this land falls under “marginally unsuitable” directly relates to its proximity to wetlands within the 100-year flood elevation. Future development of these areas would be permitted only to the extent allowable under the District’s Long Term Permits and would require compensating storage to be provided. In total, there are 1,731 acres in this category.

From the figures included in the 2023 plan, we see that the large area to the north of Frontierland at Magic Kingdom has changed to the new designation of “Marginally Unsuitable,” outlined in the light green areas.

This designation change means that this land area has been updated from “land considered unavailable for development” to “development is permitted to the extent allowable under the District’s Long Term Permits.” Additionally, the land immediately next to Big Thunder Mountain has also changed its designation to “marginally unsuitable.” This happens to be the same area of land where Disney teased a potential Magic Kingdom expansion.

All of these land category changes could be our first insight into whether those blue sky projects are even going to be possible. This may indicate that what’s “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain” could be possible with quite a bit of work to make the land suitable enough for an expansion.

We’re interested to see what will come of this land and how long it will take Disney to develop it. As you may recall, Disney previously stated that it plans to invest $60 billion into its parks division, but later clarified that those major expansion projects likely won’t happen for another five years. But hey — we’ll be sure to share any updates we see along the way!
