We’ve been waiting YEARS for something to happen at this unassuming site at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and now, the time has finally come!

It’s happening!

“The Little Mermaid — A Musical Adventure” (a reimagined version of the “Voyage of the Little Mermaid” show) officially debuts on May 27th, but we got the chance to check it out a bit early — and we’re telling you everything you need to know!

Planning guide for the ultimate Disney vacation

“The Voyage of the Little Mermaid” has been closed since 2020, and “The Little Mermaid — A Musical Adventure” is the NEW attraction that has officially replaced it. Announced back in 2023, nearly two years later, the show is FINALLY a reality.

This reimagined show is inspired by the original animated classic from Walt Disney Animation Studios — The Little Mermaid(A.K.A., it’ll be based on the original animated film, NOT the more recent live-action retelling).

The Little Mermaid — A Musical Adventure

Musical numbers like “Part of Your World,” “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” and “Kiss the Girl” are part of the updated show, and now that we’ve seen it, we’re letting you know our thoughts! When you enter the theatre from the mental stanchions/waiting area outside, the first room you’ll encounter is essentially a holding room before the pre-show, so it’s nice that you get to wait mostly indoors! The pre-show just had some instrumental music from the film playing, and then we headed into the theatre.

When we walked into the theatre, we noticed that there are ADA compliant rows in the front and back of the theatre, and it’s all themed to look very much like a shipwreck, which is, of course, very relevant to the story.

The theatre!

This essentially follows the exact same story of the original film — you start off in Ariel’s trinket room, then go through her losing her voice, her agreement with Ursula, but what really was interesting is that there are only TWO actors on stage. Ariel and Eric are the only two actors onstage, and the rest of the characters are all puppets! It was also really cool to see that when Ariel is a mermaid, she genuinely never touches the ground — she’s moved around with something that must be similar to a robotic arm.

She doesn’t touch the ground as a mermaid!

Now, we do feel the puppets, especially the way that Sebastian begins as a screen then becomes a puppet, are very well done, however, we weren’t a big fan of Ursula — we don’t feel it was as impressive as it could have been, especially paired with the fact that most of the rest of the the stage is screens. Ursula is more of an animatronic rather than a puppet, but there was something about it that just felt off to us, and if we’re being totally honest, we think the animatronic from the Under the Sea ride in Magic Kingdom is better than this.

Ursula animatronic

There’s also quite a bit of screens in this show. It was almost like seeing a 3D animation of other characters on those screens, but it doesn’t exactly match the original cartoon animation, so it’s a little jarring at times. When we’re seeing a live show, we expect to see puppets or actual actors, not screens, so it just didn’t feel very immersive to us. Not to mention that the lighting on this wasn’t great at times since they had to hide the robotic arm holding Ariel, or adjust to the screens.

So many screens

Overall, we’re happy something is back in this theatre and think it’ll be a good way to sit down and cool off for a little bit on hot days, but it’s certainly not a must-do. We don’t recommend using a Lightning Lane on it, and we think the show is cute overall, but we don’t know that we’ll be going out of our way to see it. We’ll be on the lookout for more news from Hollywood Studios and beyond. In the meantime, stay tuned to the Disney Food Blog for the latest Disney updates!
