The SunRail board approved a $6M study that would help the proposed Sunshine Corridor with Brightline and SunRail, according to the Orlando Business Journal.

This is a two-year project development and environmental study, and is a key step towards a trainline expansion. The study will help with learning the project costs, construction timeline, and answer important questions. It will also help with applying for federal government funding.

Part of the study will be to see how much private, federal, or state funding the project can obtain, so they can estimate how much local government money may be needed.

Chair of the Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission and Seminole County commissioner said, “Every funding partner will have a different view on how they think they can best participate. We all have a different level of resources available to us, so we will need to make sure we allow flexibility for partners to participate in the ways they can.”

Currently, the proposed stops would be at Orlando International Airport (MCO), near the Orange County Convention Center, and on South International Drive. There will even be a route along Interstate 4 to go to Tampa. A stop will eventually be added to Disney Springs, as well!

  • Seminole County
  • Osceola County
  • Orange County

The Florida Department of Transportation will start advertising for a consultant to lead the study, and one will be picked at the end of June. The study will run now until May 2027.
